1. Lipid membrane remodeling and metabolic response during isobutanol and ethanol exposure in Zymomonas mobilis

Abstract

Abstract Background Recent engineering efforts have targeted the ethanologenic bacterium Zymomonas mobilis for isobutanol production. However, significant hurdles remain due this organism’s vulnerability to isobutanol toxicity, adversely affecting its growth and productivity. The limited understanding of the physiological impacts of isobutanol on Z. mobilis constrains our ability to overcome these production barriers. Results We utilized a systems-level approach comprising LC–MS/MS-based lipidomics, metabolomics, and shotgun proteomics, to investigate how exposure to ethanol and isobutanol impact the lipid membrane composition and overall physiology of Z. mobilis. Our analysis revealed significant and distinct alterations in membrane phospholipid and fatty acid composition resulting from ethanol and isobutanol exposure. Notably, ethanol exposure increased membrane cyclopropane fatty acid content and expression of cyclopropane fatty acid (CFA) synthase. Surprisingly, isobutanol decreased cyclopropane fatty acid content despite robust upregulation of CFA synthase. Overexpression of the native Z. mobilis’ CFA synthase increased cyclopropane fatty acid content in all phospholipid classes and was associated with a significant improvement in growth rates in the presence of added ethanol and isobutanol. Heterologous expression of CFA synthase from Clostridium acetobutylicum resulted in a near complete replacement of unsaturated fatty acids with cyclopropane fatty acids, affecting all lipid classes. However, this did not translate to improved growth rates under isobutanol exposure. Correlating with its greater susceptibility to isobutanol, Z. mobilis exhibited more pronounced alterations in its proteome, metabolome, and overall cell morphology—including cell swelling and formation of intracellular protein aggregates —when exposed to isobutanol compared to ethanol. Isobutanol triggered a broad stress response marked by the upregulation of heat shock proteins, efflux transporters, DNA repair systems, and the downregulation of cell motility proteins. Isobutanol also elicited widespread dysregulation of Z. mobilis’ primary metabolism evidenced by increased levels of nucleotide degradation intermediates and the depletion of biosynthetic and glycolytic intermediates. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive, systems-level evaluation of the impact of ethanol and isobutanol exposure on the lipid membrane composition and overall physiology of Z. mobilis. These findings will guide engineering of Z. mobilis towards the creation of isobutanol-tolerant strains that can serve as robust platforms for the industrial production of isobutanol from lignocellulosic sugars.

Abstract

ABSTRACTReduced genome bacteria are genetically simplified systems that facilitate biological study and industrial use. The free-living alphaproteobacterium Zymomonas mobilis has a naturally reduced genome containing fewer than 2,000 protein-coding genes. Despite its small genome, Z. mobilis thrives in diverse conditions including the presence or absence of atmospheric oxygen. However, insufficient characterization of essential and conditionally essential genes has limited broader adoption of Z. mobilis as a model alphaproteobacterium. Here, we use genome-scale CRISPRi-seq (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats interference sequencing) to systematically identify and characterize Z. mobilis genes that are conditionally essential for aerotolerant or anaerobic growth or are generally essential across both conditions. Comparative genomics revealed that the essentiality of most “generally essential” genes was shared between Z. mobilis and other Alphaproteobacteria, validating Z. mobilis as a reduced genome model. Among conditionally essential genes, we found that the DNA repair gene, recJ, was critical only for aerobic growth but reduced the mutation rate under both conditions. Further, we show that genes encoding the F1FO ATP synthase and Rhodobacter nitrogen fixation (Rnf) respiratory complex are required for the anaerobic growth of Z. mobilis. Combining CRISPRi partial knockdowns with metabolomics and membrane potential measurements, we determined that the ATP synthase generates membrane potential that is consumed by Rnf to power downstream processes. Rnf knockdown strains accumulated isoprenoid biosynthesis intermediates, suggesting a key role for Rnf in powering essential biosynthetic reactions. Our work establishes Z. mobilis as a streamlined model for alphaproteobacterial genetics, has broad implications in bacterial energy coupling, and informs Z. mobilis genome manipulation for optimized production of valuable isoprenoid-based bioproducts.IMPORTANCEThe inherent complexity of biological systems is a major barrier to our understanding of cellular physiology. Bacteria with markedly fewer genes than their close relatives, or reduced genome bacteria, are promising biological models with less complexity. Reduced genome bacteria can also have superior properties for industrial use, provided the reduction does not overly restrict strain robustness. Naturally reduced genome bacteria, such as the alphaproteobacterium Zymomonas mobilis, have fewer genes but remain environmentally robust. In this study, we show that Z. mobilis is a simplified genetic model for Alphaproteobacteria, a class with important impacts on the environment, human health, and industry. We also identify genes that are only required in the absence of atmospheric oxygen, uncovering players that maintain and utilize the cellular energy state. Our findings have broad implications for the genetics of Alphaproteobacteria and industrial use of Z. mobilis to create biofuels and bioproducts.

Abstract

A new species of Microphotina Beier, 1935 (Mantodea: Photinaidae: Microphotinini), Microphotina cristalino sp. nov., is described from Mato Grosso, Brazil based on two male specimens. The new species extended the distribution of Microphotina to the southern limits of the Amazon rainforest, in the Cerrado-Amazônia ecotone. A synthesis of the taxonomy, systematics, natural history, and geographic distribution of Microphotina spp. is provided, along with an updated dichotomous key to species. The hypothesis that Microphotina represents a canopy-dwelling lineage is formulated. The role of praying mantises as flagship species for insect and Amazon conservation is briefly discussed.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Zymomonas mobilis is an industrially relevant aerotolerant anaerobic bacterium that can convert up to 96% of consumed glucose to ethanol. This highly catabolic metabolism could be leveraged to produce isoprenoid-based bioproducts via the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway, but we currently have limited knowledge concerning the metabolic constraints of this pathway in Z. mobilis. Here, we performed an initial investigation of the metabolic bottlenecks within the MEP pathway of Z. mobilis using enzyme overexpression strains and quantitative metabolomics. Our analysis revealed that 1-deoxy-d-xylulose 5-phosphate synthase (DXS) represents the first enzymatic bottleneck in the Z. mobilis MEP pathway. DXS overexpression triggered large increases in the intracellular levels of the first five MEP pathway intermediates, of which the buildup in 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol 2,4-cyclodiphosphate (MEcDP) was the most substantial. The combined overexpression of DXS, 4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl diphosphate (HMBDP) synthase (IspG), and HMBDP reductase (IspH) mitigated the bottleneck at MEcDP and mobilized carbon to downstream MEP pathway intermediates, indicating that IspG and IspH activity become the primary pathway constraints during DXS overexpression. Finally, we overexpressed DXS with other native MEP enzymes and a heterologous isoprene synthase and showed that isoprene can be used as a carbon sink in the Z. mobilis MEP pathway. By revealing key bottlenecks within the MEP pathway of Z. mobilis, this study will aid future engineering efforts aimed at developing this bacterium for industrial isoprenoid production. IMPORTANCE Engineered microorganisms have the potential to convert renewable substrates into biofuels and valuable bioproducts, which offers an environmentally sustainable alternative to fossil-fuel-derived products. Isoprenoids are a diverse class of biologically derived compounds that have commercial applications as various commodity chemicals, including biofuels and biofuel precursor molecules. Thus, isoprenoids represent a desirable target for large-scale microbial generation. However, our ability to engineer microbes for the industrial production of isoprenoid-derived bioproducts is limited by an incomplete understanding of the bottlenecks in the biosynthetic pathway responsible for isoprenoid precursor generation. In this study, we combined genetic engineering with quantitative analyses of metabolism to examine the capabilities and constraints of the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathway in the industrially relevant microbe Zymomonas mobilis. Our integrated and systematic approach identified multiple enzymes whose overexpression in Z. mobilis results in an increased production of isoprenoid precursor molecules and mitigation of metabolic bottlenecks.

Abstract

Abstract Background/Objective: HIV viral load self-testing could enable people living with HIV (PLHIV) to monitor their viral suppression status more easily, potentially facilitating medication adherence and safe behavior decision-making. Smartphone-based viral load testing innovations have the potential to reach resource-limited and vulnerable communities to address inequities in access to HIV care. However, successful development and translation of these tests requires meaningful investigation of end-user contexts and incorporation of those context-specific needs early in the design process. The objective of this study is to engage PLHIV and HIV healthcare providers in human-centered design research to inform key design and implementation considerations for a smartphone-based HIV viral load self-testing device prototype in development. Methods: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with PLHIV (n = 10) and HIV providers (n = 4) in Indiana, a state with suboptimal viral suppression rates and marked disparities in access to HIV care. Interview guides were developed based on contextual investigation and human-centered design frameworks and included a demonstration of the device prototype with feedback-gathering questions. Results: Thematic analysis of interview transcripts revealed important benefits, concerns, and user requirements for smartphone-based HIV VL self-testing within the context of PLHIV lived experience, knowledge, and barriers to care in Indiana. Conclusion: End-user needs and preferences were identified as key design specifications and implementation considerations to facilitate the acceptability and inform ongoing development and ultimately real-world translation of the HIV VL monitoring device prototype.

6. Yaws elimination in Ecuador: Findings of a serological survey of children in Esmeraldas province to evaluate interruption of transmission.

Abstract

BackgroundThe WHO roadmap for neglected tropical diseases includes yaws eradication requiring certification of elimination of transmission in all endemic and formerly endemic countries worldwide. A community-based programme for yaws control was considered to have achieved elimination of the infection in the endemic focus in Ecuador after 1993. We did a serosurvey of children in this focus to provide evidence for interruption of transmission.MethodsSurvey of serum samples collected from children aged 2 to 15 years living in the formerly endemic and in geographically contiguous areas. A convenience sample of sera collected between 2005 were 2017 from non-yaws studies, were analyzed using immunochromatic rapid tests to screen (OnSite Syphilis Ab Combo Rapid Test) for Treponema pallidum-specific antibodies and confirm (DPP Syphilis Screen and Confirm) seroreactivity based on the presence antibodies to treponemal and non-treponemal antigens.ResultsSeroreactivity was confirmed in 6 (0.14%, 95% CI 0.06-0.30) of 4,432 sera analyzed and was similar in formerly endemic (0.11%, (95% CI 0.01-0.75) and non-endemic (0.14%, 95% CI 0.06-0.34) communities. All seroreactors were of Afro-Ecuadorian ethnicity and most were male (4/6) and aged 10 or more years (5/6), the latter possibly indicating venereal syphilis. Only 1 seroreactor lived in a community in the Rio Santiago, that was formerly hyperendemic for yaws.ConclusionWe observed very low levels of treponemal transmission in both formerly endemic and non-endemic communities which might be indicative of congenital or venereal syphilis and, if yaws, would likely be insufficient to maintain transmission of this endemic childhood infection. Additional surveys of children aged 1 to 5 years are planned in Rio Santiago communities to exclude yaws transmission.

Abstract

The need for a comprehensive, high-quality pipeline for the development of undergraduate pre-service teachers, especially those that represent a diverse student body, within STEM disciplines is acute. Here, we studied the NoyceSCIENCE program to determine the most impactful experiences offered to undergraduates through the lens of student development theory. We used qualitative coding to analyze data collected from journals (n = 29) written by students of varying backgrounds, and at varying levels within the program (i.e., the Scholar and Intern level) over a 3-year program running period. We observed that faculty mentorship, the ability of undergraduates to mentor others, volunteer experiences, and learning directly from experts had the greatest influence on student development overall. For Scholars that participate for more than 1 year in the program, access to undergraduate mentoring and volunteering experiences contributed most to student development. We posit that these findings are broadly applicable to other science learning communities and STEM content-focused teacher preparation programs as they are program components that can be integrated in isolation or in their entirety.

Abstract

A new species of praying mantis, Vates phoenix sp. nov. (Mantidae, Vatinae), is described from localities within Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states, Brazil. This is the first record of Vates from the Atlantic Rainforest biome. The new species is unique among its congeners in having, among other features, strongly reduced cuticular projections above the lateral ocelli, structures otherwise well developed and produced in all other species of Vates. Remarks on the natural history and biogeography of Vates, in relation to this new finding, are further discussed.

9. Towards the implementation of a DNA barcode library for the identification of Peruvian species of Anastrepha (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Abstract

The genus Anastrepha is a diverse lineage of fruit-damaging tephritid flies widespread across the Neotropical Region. Accurate taxonomic identification of these flies is therefore of paramount importance in agricultural contexts. DNA barcoding libraries are molecular-based tools based on a short sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene enabling rapid taxonomic identification of biological species. In this study, we evaluate the utility of this method for species identification of Peruvian species of Anastrepha and assemble a preliminary barcode profile for the group. We obtained 73 individual sequences representing the 15 most common species, 13 of which were either assigned to previously recognized or newly established BINs. Intraspecific genetic divergence between sampled species averaged 1.01% (range 0-3.3%), whereas maximum interspecific values averaged 8.67 (range 8.26-17.12%). DNA barcoding was found to be an effective method to discriminate between many Peruvian species of Anastrepha that were tested, except for most species of the fraterculus species group, which were all assigned to the same BIN as they shared similar and, in some cases, identical barcodes. We complemented this newly produced dataset with 86 published sequences to build a DNA barcoding library of 159 sequences representing 56 Peruvian species of Anastrepha (approx. 58% of species reported from that country). We conclude that DNA barcoding is an effective method to distinguish among Peruvian species of Anastrepha outside the fraterculus group, and that complementary methods (e.g., morphometrics, additional genetic markers) would be desirable to assist sensu stricto species identification for phytosanitary surveillance and management practices of this important group of pestiferous flies.

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive review of historical morphological nomenclature used for praying mantis (Mantodea) morphology, which includes citations, original use, and assignment of homology. All referenced structures across historical works correspond to a proposed standard term for use in all subsequent works pertaining to praying mantis morphology and systematics. The new standards are presented with a verbal description in a glossary as well as indicated on illustrations and images. In the vast majority of cases, originally used terms were adopted as the new standard. In addition, historical morphological topographical homology conjectures are considered with discussion on modern interpretations. A new standardized formulation to present foreleg femoral and tibial spines is proposed for clarity based on previous works. In addition, descriptions for methods of collection, curation, genital complex dissection, and labeling are provided to aid in the proper preservation and storage of specimens for longevity and ease of study. Due to the lack of consistent linear morphometric measurement practices in the literature, we have proposed a series of measurements for taxonomic and morphological research. These measurements are presented with figures to provide visual aids with homologous landmarks to ensure compatibility and comparability across the Order. Finally, our proposed method of pinning mantises is presented with a photographical example as well as a video tutorial available at http://mantodearesearch.com.

11. An elusive Neotropical giant, Hondurantemna chespiritoi gen. n. & sp. n. (Antemninae, Mantidae): a new lineage of mantises exhibiting an ontogenetic change in cryptic strategy

Abstract

We present the description of a new genus and new species of praying mantis, Hondurantemna chespiritoi gen. n. & sp. n. This species of cryptic mantis, collected in National parks in Mexico and Honduras, remained unknown despite its considerable body size. Based on a phylogenetic analysis with molecular data and traditional morphological analysis, we place this new genus within Antemninae, a monotypic Mantidae subfamily. We update the subfamily concept for Antemninae and provide a key to the two genera. We describe the external morphology of immatures and adults of the new species as well as the genital complexes of both sexes and the ootheca of Antemna rapax. The observed morphological changes between immature and adult females suggests that the selection for an alternate strategy for crypsis is a response to size increase of the abdomen during development. Immatures exploit a stick/branch habitat based on their morphological appearance while adult females appear as a leaf to disguise the profile of the body.

La educación a distancia puede ser considerada como una herramienta que promueve la formación y actualización de capital humano dentro de las organizaciones, ya que permite a los trabajadores mantener una educación continua para adquirir habilidades sin desatender sus compromisos laborales. La revolución digital ha provocado que la información que antes se manipulaba en papel, hoy tienda a ser creada en forma de documentos electrónico/digitales dentro de las organizaciones. Por ello, es imperante que las organizaciones cuenten con personal capacitado en el manejo de este tipo de documentación digital, y conozcan los procesos tecnológicos involucrados y las legislaciones para cada caso. En este trabajo presentamos la experiencia entre la Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí y el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía sobre el desarrollo de un curso de educación a distancia enfocado al manejo de documentos electrónicos para el personal responsable de la gestión documental. Además, describimos el desarrollo, ejecución y evaluación general del curso a través del modelo PRADDIE (2012); para catalogar los instrumentos empleados en la implementación, utilizamos el modelo de Laurillard (1993) modificado por Curtis (1997); para la evaluación de las herramientas tecnológicas, el modelo ACTIONS de Bates (1995); y para medir el aprendizaje logrado por los alumnos, el modelo de Kirkpatrick (1994).

14. Estudios citogenéticos en niños con Leucemia Linfocitica Aguda-B en Costa Rica

Se realizaron análisis cromosómicos en médulas oseas de 177 pacientes con Leucemia Linfocítica Aguda. Las técnicas citogenéticas convencionales forman parte del panel obligatorio de análisis realizados como diagnóstico a los pacientes con leucemia y representan una gran ventaja por ser factores efectivos e independientes de pronóstico, escenciales para la elección terapeútica. Los resultados citogenéticos fueron alcanzados en 83% de las muestras de médula osea: los cariotipos nomales representaron el 29% y los cariotipos anormales el 71% con la siguiente distribución: t(9;22) 3%; t(1;19) 5%; t(4;11) 3%, hiperdiploidía 39%; otras anormalidades cromosómicas 21%. El análisis citogenético sistemático es escencial para definir los subtipos morfo-inmunológicos de leucemia, y para detectar nuevas translocaciones que conduzcan a la comprensión de la génesis de la leucemiaCytogenetic studies in children with Acute Lymphocitic Leukemia-B in Costa Rica. Chromosome analyses were performed on bone marrow of 177 pediatric patients with Acute Lymphocitic Leukemia at the "Hospital Nacional de Niños". The standard cytogenetic techniques now belongs to the panel of mandatory analyses performed at diagnosis of our acute leukemia patients and represent a major advantage to be effective and independent prognostic factors, essential for therapeutic choices. Cytogenetic results were achieved in 83% of the bone marrow samples: normal karyotypes represented 29% and abnormal karyotypes 71% with the follow distribution: t(9;22) 3%; t(1;19) 5%; t(4;11) 3%, Hyperdiploidy 39%; other chromosomal abnormalities 21%. Systematic cytogenetic analyses are essencial to define morpho-immunologic sub-types of leukemia and to detect new translocations that allows to understand hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis. Rev. 19. Evaluation of 1,2-diacyl-3-acetyl triacylglycerol production in Yarrowia lipolytica

Abstract

In this work, the fabrication and characterization of organic solar cells under the bulk heterojunction approach in a direct architecture, with gold nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) disseminated into the hole transport layer (HTL) based on PEDOT:PSS is carried out. The active layer is a blend of PBDB-T donor with the non-fullerene electron acceptor ITIC. Ag-NPs dispersed in deionized water are synthesized by laser ablation protocols using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Results show an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.84 V, a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 15.5 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 0.49% and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.4% when 5% of Ag-NPs are incorporated into the PEDOT:PSS layer; for pristine PEDOT:PSS film, the photovoltaic parameters are Voc of 0.85 V, Jsc of 15.4 mA/cm2, FF of 0.45% and PCE of 5.9%; these results mean an 8.5% of PCE enhancement with the Ag-NPs incorporation. Ag-NPs are introduced into the pristine layer PEDOT:PSS to increase light absorption into the active layer through the localized surface plasmonic resonance effect.

Abstract

Semiconductor quantum dots such as zinc sulfide have interesting potential applications, due to their size-dependent optical properties. These nanostructures can be used for applications in agriculture, environmental chemistry, and fluorescence microscopy. The great rise in nanotechnology has sparked the scientific community’s interest in nanomaterials for the use of photodegradation in aquatic bodies. Quantum Dots (QDs) such as ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) can absorb electromagnetic radiation and generate subsequently reactive oxygen species (ROS) directly in aqueous phase. The presence of ROS in aquatic environments can be used to destroy organic contaminants by photocatalysis. Previous studies had evidenced that the presence of impurities (i.e. copper, manganese, nickel) in the crystalline structures of QDs can enhance their optical properties and consequently their catalytic capacity. Because of this, the present investigation was focused on generating water stable ZnS nanoparticles with catalytic properties. In this work, we have synthesized pure and doped ZnS nanoparticles using a reflux method. The morphology of these QDs was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We also studied the photocatalytic properties of these nanostructures. A red shift was observed in the photoluminescence peak of pure ZnS nanoparticles when they were doped with heavy metals. Pure ZnS NPs and Mn-doped ZnS NPs showed luminescent peaks at 444 nm and 596 nm, respectively. Photodegradation studies were evaluated in the presence of organic dyes like Tropaeolin O (TO) and different concentrations of quantum dots (250 ppm and 500 ppm). The photodegradation of TO was dependent on the QDs concentration and exposure time. The destruction of organic dyes in the presence of photo-excited ZnS nanoparticles is envisioned as a fast and clean technology. 23. Los insectos comestibles del Perú: Biodiversidad y perspectivas de la entomofagia en el contexto peruano

Abstract

La entomofagia, el consumo de insectos y sus derivados con fines nutricionales y/o terapéuticos, es una práctica cultural difundida en diversas regiones del mundo. El crecimiento poblacional y el impacto que el calentamiento global tendrán en la productividad agropecuaria convencional hacen necesario identificar fuentes complementarias de alimento sostenible. Por su alto contenido de proteínas, ácidos grasos, minerales y otros nutrientes, se estima que los insectos jugarán un rol importante en la seguridad alimentaria humana ante dicho escenario. Perú tiene una larga tradición de consumo de insectos; sin embargo, existe escasa documentación sobre las especies utilizadas, su distribución, forma de consumo y perfil nutricional. La presente revisión busca elaborar el primer listado nacional de insectos comestibles del Perú . Se halló que existen 66 especies reportadas de uso directo e indirecto, y otras 120 también presentes que, aunque su consumo no ha sido reportado en el Perú, este está documentado en países vecinos. En total se reportan 186 especies de facto o potencialmente utilizables: Hymenoptera (4 familias, 89 especies), Coleoptera (10 familias, 46 especies) y Lepidoptera (9 familias, 26 especies) representan el 86 % de esta diversidad, mientras que Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Orthoptera, Blattodea, Hemiptera, Diptera, y Megaloptera, todos con 5 ó menos especies utilizadas, completan la lista. En base a estos hallazgos se discuten el potencial nutricional de los insectos, propuestas para fomentar el impulso de dicha industria en el Perú, y el valor de esta como estrategia adaptativa ante la transformación climática proyectada para el presente siglo.

25. Measuring Quality of Employment: an Application for Ecuador in the period from 2007 to 2017

espanolEste trabajo investiga la evolucion de la calidad del empleo en Ecuador en el periodo de 2007 a 2017. Debido al caracter multidimensional de la calidad del empleo, se construyen tres tipos de indicadores compuestos. Primero, se elabora un indice compuesto con dos tipos de ponderaciones de las dimensiones: uno que pondera de igual forma cada dimension y otro que da mayor peso a la dimension de remuneraciones. Segundo, reconociendo que cada mercado laboral tiene particularidades y que la ponderacion de las dimensiones que representan la calidad del empleo no es el mismo para cada pais, se aplica un analisis de componentes principales (ACP) policorico. Ademas, se calcula el indicador de calidad del empleo para diferentes sectores de actividad economica. Los resultados senalan que existe una mejora en el indicador de calidad del empleo en 2017 en relacion con el nivel observado en 2007, lo que responde principalmente a los mayores niveles de estabilidad laboral y cobertura de seguridad social que experimentaron los trabajadores durante el periodo de estudio. No obstante, el porcentaje de personas con precariedad laboral sigue siendo bastante significativa, de la misma forma que se senalan marcadas diferencias en el nivel de calidad del empleo entre los diferentes sectores de actividad economica considerados. Los sectores de servicios presentan el mejor indicador, mientras que los sectores de agricultura, ganaderia y pesca y construccion registran el peor indicador. EnglishThe document investigates the evolution of the quality of employment in Ecuador in the years 2007-2017. Due to the multidimensional nature of job quality, three types of composite indicators are constructed. First, a composite index is constructed with two types of dimension weights; one that weights each dimension in the same way, and another that gives greater weight to the remuneration dimension. Second, recognizing that each labor market has particularities and that the weighting of the dimensions that represent the quality of employment is not the same for each country, a Polychoric Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied. Additionally, the employment quality indicator is calculated for different sectors of economic activity. The results indicate that there is an improvement in the employment quality indicator in 2017 in relation to the level observed in 2007, what mainly responds to the higher levels of job stability and social security coverage that workers experienced during the study period. However, the percentage of people with job insecurity is still quite significant, in the same way that there are marked differences in the level of quality of employment between the different sectors of economic activity considered in the study. Alem disso, o indicador de qualidade do emprego e calculado para diferentes setores de atividade economica. Os resultados indicam que ha uma melhora no indicador de qualidade do emprego em 2017 em relacao ao patamar observado em 2007, o que responde principalmente aos maiores niveis de estabilidade no emprego e cobertura previdenciaria vivenciados pelos trabalhadores no periodo do estudo. No entanto, a percentagem de pessoas com precariedade do emprego continua a ser bastante significativa, da mesma forma que se notam diferencas marcantes no nivel de qualidade do emprego entre os diferentes setores de atividade economica considerados. Os setores de servicos apresentam o melhor indicador, enquanto os setores de agricultura, pecuaria e pesca e construcao civil apresentam o pior indicador.

26. A New Species of Praying Mantis from Peru Reveals Impaling as a Novel Hunting Strategy in Mantodea (Thespidae: Thespini)

Abstract

A new species of lichen-mimicking praying mantis, Carrikerella simpira n. sp., is described from Tingo María region in Peru. The new species differs from its congeners in having reduced tergal lobes, a relatively sinuous pronotum, and it is found in the highland tropical rainforest of the Central Andes. Behavioral observations conducted on captive individuals revealed that juveniles and adults hunt by impaling prey using modified foretibial structures. Anatomical examinations of the incumbent trophic structures revealed functional adaptations for prey impaling in the foretibiae, primarily consisting of prominent, forwardly oriented, barbed spines. We provide an overall description of this novel hunting behavior in Mantodea and hypothesize on its evolutionary origin and adaptive significance for the Thespidae.

Abstract

Three carbo-mer derivatives based on a C18Ph4 core decorated with two identical electro-active groups X, i.e. two aromatic carbo-benzenes (1 and 2, X = 4-anilinyl) and one pro-aromatic carbo-quinoid (the carbo-TTF 3, X = 1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene) were studied through Scanning Probe Microscopies (SPMs). Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) were fabricated (thickness ~160 pm), for the two centrosymmetric representatives 1 and 3, the organization of which on the HOPG substrate was found to be structure-specific. Electrical/electronic properties of the three carbo-mers were determined by using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and its electrical modes: Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) and conductive Atomic Force Microscopy (c-AFM). Measurements of the work function (∅) through KPFM result in a ∅ = 5.60 eV value for 1, 4.97 eV for 2 and 4.82 eV for 3. Hole mobility (µ) values extracted from local I-V plots by using c-AFM are 15 × 10 − 8 cm 2 V − 1 s − 1 for 1, 3 × 10 − 6 cm 2 V − 1 s − 1 for 2 and 87 × 10 − 8 cm 2 V − 1 s − 1 for 3. A concept test of the possible application of carbo-mers in self-assembled hole transporting monolayer (SA-HTM), with the view to replacing the most common p-type contact used in organic solar cells (OSCs), PEDOT:PSS, is also reported.

Abstract

Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung's disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung's disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middle-income countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Abstract

En el desarrollo de esta investigación se estudió el deterioro cognitivo de los adultos mayores, siendo la principal afectación en el avance evolutivo que muchos de los mismos padecen. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar de qué manera influye el deterioro cognitivo en las actividades básicas de la vida diaria de los adultos mayores, buscando analizar la correlación que propicia dicha problemática en las acciones comportamentales de tales sujetos. La muestra de estudio estuvo conformada por 100 participantes que fluctuaron entre los 65 a 80 años de edad, los mismos que accedieron a participar en el desarrollo de este proyecto. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó el test de Escala Mini Mental State Examination MMSE de Creavin, Wisniewski y Thom, el cual sirvió para detectar el deterioro cognitivo mediante el ejercicio de pregunta-respuesta; el segundo instrumento fue el test de Evaluación de Actividades Básicas de la Vida Diaria con el Índice de Katz Modificado por la Organización Panamericana de Salud el cual se trata de una escala de preguntas, cuyos grados reflejan niveles de conducta en seis funciones. Los datos fueron analizados de forma descriptiva y analítica. Entre las conclusiones con mayor preeminencia, se halla que, a mayor deterioro cognitivo mayor afectación en la funcionalidad de los sujetos de estudio. Abstract In the development of this research, the cognitive deterioration of the elderly was studied, being the main affectation in the evolutionary advance that many of them suffer. The objective of the study was to determine how cognitive impairment influences the basic activities of daily life of older adults, seeking to analyze the correlation that causes this problem in the behavioral actions of such subjects. The study sample consists of 100 participants ranging from 65 to 80 years of age, who agreed to participate in the development of this project. For the data collection, the Mini Mental State Examination Scale MMSE test of Craven, Wisniewski and Thom was used, which served to detect the cognitive deterioration by means of the question-answer exercise; The second instrument was the Evaluation of Basic Activities of Daily Life test with the Katz Index Modified by the Pan American Health Organization, which is a scale of questions, whose grades reflect levels of behavior in six functions. The data was analyzed in a descriptive and analytical manner. Abstract

We present the description of a new genus and new species of praying mantis, Hondurantemna chespiritoi gen. n. & sp. n. This species of cryptic mantis, collected in National parks in Mexico and Honduras, remained unknown despite its considerable body size. Based on a phylogenetic analysis with molecular data and traditional morphological analysis, we place this new genus within Antemninae, a monotypic Mantidae subfamily. We update the subfamily concept for Antemninae and provide a key to the two genera. We describe the external morphology of immatures and adults of the new species as well as the genital complexes of both sexes and the ootheca of Antemna rapax. The observed morphological changes between immature and adult females suggests that the selection for an alternate strategy for crypsis is a response to size increase of the abdomen during development. Abstract

The genus Anastrepha is a diverse lineage of fruit-damaging tephritid flies widespread across the Neotropical Region. Accurate taxonomic identification of these flies is therefore of paramount importance in agricultural contexts. DNA barcoding libraries are molecular-based tools based on a short sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene enabling rapid taxonomic identification of biological species. In this study, we evaluate the utility of this method for species identification of Peruvian species of Anastrepha and assemble a preliminary barcode profile for the group. We obtained 73 individual sequences representing the 15 most common species, 13 of which were either assigned to previously recognized or newly established BINs. Intraspecific genetic divergence between sampled species averaged 1.01% (range 0-3.3%), whereas maximum interspecific values averaged 8.67 (range 8.26-17.12%). DNA barcoding was found to be an effective method to discriminate between many Peruvian species of Anastrepha that were tested, except for most species of the fraterculus species group, which were all assigned to the same BIN as they shared similar and, in some cases, identical barcodes. We complemented this newly produced dataset with 86 published sequences to build a DNA barcoding library of 159 sequences representing 56 Peruvian species of Anastrepha (approx. 58% of species reported from that country). We conclude that DNA barcoding is an effective method to distinguish among Peruvian species of Anastrepha outside the fraterculus group, and that complementary methods (e.g., morphometrics, additional genetic markers) would be desirable to assist sensu stricto species identification for phytosanitary surveillance and management practices of this important group of pestiferous flies.

Abstract

Aortopulmonary (AP) window is a very rare congenital heart disease resulting from a defect in the shared wall between the great arteries during embryogenesis. There are four major types of AP window based on the latest accepted classification by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database Committee. Hemitruncus is a misnomer because there are two semilunar valves in this lesion, and it should be correctly termed as the anomalous origin of the right (more common) or left pulmonary artery from the ascending aorta. AP window and anomalous branch pulmonary artery from ascending aorta lead to a left-to-right shunt. The patients present with symptoms of congestive heart failure and will develop pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary vascular obstructive disease if left untreated. Echocardiography remains the main diagnostic modality in detecting and defining these lesions. Cardiac computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and cardiac catheterization can provide additional information in selected cases. Medical management includes treating the heart failure symptoms using medications. Transcatheter closure is feasible in selected cases. Surgical repair using patch closure is the preferred treatment and should be done early to avoid the development of pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertensive crisis can complicate the immediate postoperative care. Long-term survival as well as late results of surgical correction of AP window without associated anomalies is excellent.

Abstract

The work shows the results of the first phase of a research project, aimed at addressing from a new perspective the problem of plagiarism in the digital era and as part of the processes of academic training, which is pursued through the integration of technological tools . It is an application for plagiarism detection built from two open source applications, a platform for distance education and an adaptive plagiarism detection algorithm. The methodology for the development, integration and implementation of the aforementioned tool is also presented in general terms, as well as the analysis of statistical data from a sample of students at the higher level of the Faculty of Information Sciences (FCI) of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi (UASLP), Mexico. The initial analysis yields data of interest and probabilistic models as a first approach to the problem, which will be analyzed from an academic focus, in such a way as to identify the degree of participation of students in this type of practice as part of their university education.

Abstract

Resumen Introducción. La literatura especializada señala la importancia del terapeuta ocupacional en conflictos violentos al reportar múltiples reflexiones y experiencias; sin embargo, son ausentes los trabajos que en Colombia profundicen en los alcances y posibilidades profesionales según la legislación vigente. Objetivo. Analizar disposiciones del marco legal colombiano relacionadas con conflicto armado para identificar contenidos afines a la terapia ocupacional. Materiales y métodos. Investigación documental acerca de la normatividad colombiana sobre conflicto armado para su respectivo análisis. Resultados. Las disposiciones revisadas no mencionan la terapia ocupacional. Las normas, según áreas de ejercicio, se distribuyen así: bienestar social 21.8%, psicosocial 21.8%, sociolaboral 20.6%, biosocial 20.6% y educación 14%; estas, en su mayoría, cubren a víctimas del conflicto y se interesan en el desplazamiento forzado. Se destacan la mirada diferencial para protección de la población infantil y los procedimientos como atención directa, actividades grupales e intervención con familias. Conclusiones. Se evidencia una necesidad de impulso gremial al reconocimiento social de las posibilidades de la terapia ocupacional en ámbitos distintos al clínico. La falta de claridad por parte de la sociedad y el desconocimiento de legisladores sobre los alcances profesionales de los terapeutas ocupacionales pueden ser causa de la no mención en las disposiciones analizadas. Como retos gremiales queda participar en escenarios de formulación de políticas públicas, divulgar experiencias profesionales en conflictos violentos y fomentar programas dirigidos a actores armados. Abstract Introduction: Specialized literature points the importance of occupational therapists during violent conflicts when reporting thoughts and experiences; however, works that explore the scope and career possibilities of occupational therapists in the light of current legislation are scarce. Objective: To analyze provisions in the Colombian legal framework related to armed conflict to identify content related to occupational therapy. Materials and methods: Documentary research on Colombian law regarding armed conflict. Results: The provisions consulted during this research do not mention occupational therapy. Regulations, according to practice areas, are distributed as follows: social welfare 21.8%, psychosocial welfare 21.8%, social and occupational welfare 20.6%, biosocial welfare 20.6% and education 14%, which mostly cover victims of the conflict and are interested in forced displacement. Differential perspectives regarding children protection and procedures such as direct care, group activities and intervention with families stand out. Conclusions: Occupational therapy should be promoted by professionals in settings different from the clinical context. The lack of clarity in the population and the ignorance of legislators regarding the scope of professional occupational therapists can be one of the causes of the omission of occupational therapy in the analyzed provisions. Challenges include the participation in scenarios involved in public policies, the dissemination of professional experiences in violent conflicts and the promotion of programs aimed at armed groups.

Abstract

Resumen: El Sindrome de Sengers es una en-fermedad mitocondrial autosomica recesiva, produ-cida por mutacion del gen de la Acil-Glicerol Kinasa (AGK), recientemente descubierto. Se caracteriza por cataratas congenitas bilaterales, miocardiopatia hipertrofica y acidosis lactica. Puede tener miopatia esqueletica leve, intolerancia al ejercicio y desarro-llo mental normal. Los pacientes fallecen temprana-mente debido a falla cardiaca.Dada la alta letalidad, lo infrecuente de este sindrome y la presencia de un diagnostico confirmado, se presenta el caso clinico de 2 hermanos chilenos, fallecidos por la enfermedad, que se presentaron con el cuadro caracte-ristico de cataratas congenitas bilaterales, miocardiopa-tia hipertrofica y acidosis lactica. El mayor, se opero las cataratas a los 4 meses de edad y fallecio a la edad de 13 meses debido a falla cardiaca severa refractaria y falla organica multiple, descompensado por una infeccion respiratoria. El menor se diagnostico a los 3 meses de edad y se le confirmo la mutacion del gen de AGK en Alemania. Se decidio no operarlo de las cataratas dado el mal pronostico vital. Presento progresion de la mio-cardiopatia hipertrofica y fallecio subitamente a los 8 meses de edad.

45. An elusive Neotropical giant

Abstract

We present the description of a new genus and new species of praying mantis, Hondurantemna chespiritoi gen. n. & sp. n. This species of cryptic mantis, collected in National parks in Mexico and Honduras, remained unknown despite its considerable body size. Based on a phylogenetic analysis with molecular data and traditional morphological analysis, we place this new genus within Antemninae, a monotypic Mantidae subfamily. We update the subfamily concept for Antemninae and provide a key to the two genera. We describe the external morphology of immatures and adults of the new species as well as the genital complexes of both sexes and the ootheca of Antemna rapax. The observed morphological changes between immature and adult females suggests that the selection for an alternate strategy for crypsis is a response to size increase of the abdomen during development. Immatures exploit a stick/branch habitat based on their morphological appearance while adult females appear as a leaf to disguise the profile of the body.

Abstract

Los medios de comunicación social (MCS) son comprendidos como productores relevantes de imágenes, prejuicios y estereotipos que conforman una identidad y una visión sobre los discursos de la diferencia. El presente artículo forma parte de un proyecto en Ciencias de la Información que investiga la construcción de la realidad intercultural, aplicado, en este caso, a los diarios nacionales Ajá en Perú y La Cuarta en Chile, periódicos de alta lectura en ambos países. Al mismo tiempo, este estudio permite observar la percepción de la otredad, la autoimagen y, en consecuencia, el desarrollo del periodismo intercultural. El objetivo de estos trabajos interculturales en el campo de la comunicación y el periodismo es, en definitiva, tender puentes entre las culturas, siendo su ejercicio una oportunidad de identificar la diversidad, que nos llevaría a un respeto hacia ellas y a un entendimiento intercultural más acabado.

Abstract

The Neotropical lichen mimicking mantid genus Pseudopogonogaster Beier, 1942 is revisited and re-described. The examination of the type species, P. mirabilis Beier, 1942, the first described species of this lineage, allowed us to determine that those species currently included in Pseudopogonogaster and Calopteromantis Terra, 1982 are all congeneric. As a result, the genus Calopteromantis is now considered to be a junior synonym of Pseudopogonogaster. Accordingly, Calopteromantis hebardi Terra, 1982 and Calopteromantis marulandae Salazar, 2002 are transferred to Pseudopogonogaster. The species Calopteromantis otongica Lombardo & Ayala, 1998 from Ecuador was also found to be a synonym of P. mirabilis. In addition, a new species from northwestern Peru, Pseudopogonogaster kanjaris, is described herein, thus constituting a new genus and species record for this country. Analysis of the distribution of the six recognized species of Pseudopogonogaster suggests that this genus is endemic to the mountain forests of Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru and its members are specialized inhabitants of epiphytic vegetation, exhibiting unique morphological and chromatic adaptations to these habitats. The newly available information on Pseudopogonogaster also allowed to determine that Calopteromantis terrai Jantsch, 1994, described from Mato Grosso, Brazil, is actually a member of the genus Eumiopteryx Giglio-Tos, 1915 (espidae: Pseudomiopteriginae) and, thus, is transferred to this genus as E. terrai (Jantsch, 1994) comb.n.

Abstract

Multiple nomenclatural problems persist in mantodean taxonomy. This constitutes an important challenge for praying mantis systematics, its forthcoming development and future consolidation. In this first contribution, we attempt solving a number of issues involving mostly Neotropical praying mantis species described by Brazilian entomologists Paulo S. Terra, Cândido F. de Mello-Leitão, Salvador de Toledo Piza Junior and Lauro J. Jantsch. We provide evidence to justify the following nomenclatural changes. In Acanthopidae, Acontiothespis travassosi Jantsch, 1986 is a new synonym of Raptrix perspicua (F. 1787). Changes in Thespidae are: Emboicy Terra, 1982 is a new synonym of Chloromiopteryx Giglio-Tos, 1915, E. mirim Terra, 1982 is transferred to Chloromiopteryx as C. mirim (Terra, 1982) (new combination); Musoniola plurilobata Mello-Leitão, 1937 is transferred to Chloromiopteryx as C. plurilobata (Mello-Leitão, 1937) (new combination); Metathespis modesta Piza, 1968 is removed from synonymy with Chloromiopteryx thalassina (Burmeister, 1838) and considered valid as C. modesta (Piza, 1968) (new combination and status revalidated); Metathespis precaria Piza, 1968 is removed from synonymy with Chloromiopteryx thalassina (Burmeister, 1838) and considered a new synonym of Miobantia rustica (Fabricius, 1781); Eumiopteryx magna Jantsch, 1991 is transferred to Anamiopteryx as A. magna (Jantsch, 1991) (new combination). Lectotypes are designated for Chloromiopteryx thalassina (Burmeister, 1838) and Orthoderella major (Piza, 1962). Finally, we provide supplementary information about the works of S. de T. Piza and L. J. Jantsch, and a necessary critical assessment of their taxonomic contributions to the Mantodea.
