The stellar occultation technique is a very powerful tool to obtain the size and shape of Solar System bodies with high accuracy [6]. Size determination allows to obtain geometric albedos and, in the case of binary/multiple objects, even the mass density can be derived [3]. Satellites, atmospheres, and rings can also be detected and characterized [1,2,3]. The observation of stellar occultations produced by Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) and Centaurs with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers a unique possibility to extend our knowledge of these bodies [4] by providing key information on the body's ability to retain volatiles, surface thermal properties, roughness, porosity, etc.We will present our Target of Opportunity (ToO) program [5] accepted within Heidi Hammel's JWST Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO), dedicated to observing stellar occultations by trans-Neptunian objects (TNO) and distant dwarf planets or particularly interesting centaurs (such as the ringed centaurs Chariklo [1] or Chiron [2]). Predictions of such events visible from JWST are challenging due to the chaotic motion of the space telescope around the Lagrange 2 (L2) point. Statistically, we expect there to be approximately a 50% chance of such an occultation of a star brighter than K=19 by a numbered TNO observable from JWST in Cycle 1. We will discuss the possible candidates for Cycle 1 occultations that we have identified so far. As JWST station-keeping maneuvers are executed, the list of possible occultations and their uncertainties will be revised. Very accurate relative astrometry will be performed using the latest releases of the Gaia catalog for particularly promising occultation events through established ground-based programs. Suppose a stellar occultation event is confirmed through such an astrometric revision to have a predicted impact parameter less than 3 times the estimated target radius and to have a 1 sigma uncertainty in prediction less than 2 times the target radius. In that case, the ToO observation will be triggered. JWST station-keeping and trajectory-prediction operations have been studied in the context of stellar occultations by solar system bodies [4]. The accuracy of the trajectory predictions is adequate to support this triggering mechanism up to roughly 30 days before an occultation event: the ToO response time is set to 14 days, the minimum value for a non-disruptive ToO.The observations will be made with NIRCam and the F070W and F277W filters. These filters were chosen to maximize the flux from the star while minimizing the reflected flux from the TNO or Centaur. This filter combination could change based on the properties of the occulted star and the occulting TNO/Centaur. Resistance training (RT) is an important strategy to enhance muscle strength, leading to positive adaptations related to health, fitness and sport performance outcomes. Skateboard is an extreme sport, which proficiency is classified according to the extent of the difficulty of movements and maneuvers performed. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of RT on lower limbs maximal strength and the height of the Ollie Air maneuver (OA). Twelve recreational skateboarders (age: 23.6±2.8 years; height: 1.77±0.1 meters; body mass: 66.2±4.0 kilograms; experience with skateboard: 8.9±3.1 years; relative strength in parallel back squat exercise: 1.0±0.2) with no previous experience in RT were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: RTG (resistance training group) and CG (control group). During 4 consecutive weeks, participants of RTG were submitted to 2 weekly RT sessions. Lower limbs maximal dynamic strength and the height of OA were assessed through one repetition-maximal (1RM) test and My Jump® app, respectively. For OA height, no significant difference was observed for relative pre to-post intervention changes between groups (p=0.523). Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) are small bodies that orbit the Sun with a semi-major axis larger than Neptune's4. They are thought to be remnants of the Solar System primordial disk and can retain information about the early stages of our planetary system's formation. Since the discovery of Albion3 in 1992, thousands of objects were detected in this orbital region, but only the Pluto system13 and (486958) Arrokoth14 has been visited so far by a spacecraft. Detailed topographic studies of Pluto and Charon6,7 presented superficial features of ~6 km while reprocessed Voyager images of Uranus' largest satellite - Oberon, show a mountain11 of ~11 km. Discovered15 in 2002 the big TNO 2002 MS4 is dynamically classified as a hot classical TNO. Thermal measurements made by Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory, resulted an area equivalent diameter16 of 934 +/- 47 km and a geometric albedo at V-band of 0.051-0.022+0.036. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method that has been presenting exciting advances in the knowledge of Centaurs' and TNOs' physical properties2,9,10,12 and rings1,8. We predicted and observed seven stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2021 under the European Research Council (ERC) Lucky Star project framework. The most successful one involved 116 telescopes from Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia on 8 August 2020. Here we will present results about 2002 MS4 size, shape and topographic features. Stellar occultation data show an equivalent diameter of about 800 +/- 24 km. On the projected northern hemisphere, they are evidence of topographic features of about 20 km. Following the procedure described by Johnson and McGetchin in 1973, and assuming that 2002 MS4 is mainly composed of ice with densities between 1.0 - 2.0 g/cm3, this object supports surface features of about 7 km. However, if we consider that ice density increases toward the object's centre, then 2002 MS4 can support more prominent features. Figure 1 presents the projected profile detected on the 8 August 2020 stellar occultation. Figure 1: blue lines are the positive detections with uncertainties in red. Next figure presents the radial dispersion of the observed points from the black ellipse as a position angle function. This angle is measured from the local North and increases toward the East (Figure 1). Shaded rectangles show the evidence of a mountain and a depression of about 20 km between 10 and 55 degrees. This brief communication reports preliminary findings of a study conducted to investigate the relationship between probability discounting and people’s adherence to preventive behaviors recommended during the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 112 adults living in Brazil completed an online survey composed of a Probability Discounting Questionnaire (PDQ) and a 10-item assessment of how often they complied with the health authorities’ recommendations (e.g., wash the hands frequently, practice social distancing, stay at home as much as possible, wear a mask when in public). Data analysis included the participants who showed higher (n = 40) and lower (n = 40) adherence to preventive behaviors. Results revealed that probability discounting measures are related to people’s preventive actions. Participants in the higher adherence group present significantly larger risk aversion indices (i.e., larger h values) than participants in the lower adherence group. Also, participants who showed lower adherence to preventive behaviors were more likely to perform risky choices in the PDQ than participants who demonstrated higher compliance with health authorities’ recommendations. These preliminary results suggest that probability discounting can play an essential role in people’s self-protective decisions during a global health emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Centaur (10199) Chariklo has the first ring system discovered around a small object. It was first observed using stellar occultation in 2013. Stellar occultations allow sizes and shapes to be determined with kilometre accuracy, and provide the characteristics of the occulting object and its vicinity. Aims. Using stellar occultations observed between 2017 and 2020, our aim is to constrain the physical parameters of Chariklo and its rings. We also determine the structure of the rings, and obtain precise astrometrical positions of Chariklo. Methods. We predicted and organised several observational campaigns of stellar occultations by Chariklo. Occultation light curves were measured from the datasets, from which ingress and egress times, and the ring widths and opacity values were obtained. These measurements, combined with results from previous works, allow us to obtain significant constraints on Chariklo's shape and ring structure. Results. We characterise Chariklo's ring system (C1R and C2R), and obtain radii and pole orientations that are consistent with, but more accurate than, results from previous occultations. We confirm the detection of W-shaped structures within C1R and an evident variation in radial width. The observed width ranges between 4.8 and 9.1 km with a mean value of 6.5 km. One dual observation (visible and red) does not reveal any differences in the C1R opacity profiles, indicating a ring particle size larger than a few microns. The C1R ring eccentricity is found to be smaller than 0.022 (3σ), and its width variations may indicate an eccentricity higher than ~0.005. We fit a tri-axial shape to Chariklo's detections over 11 occultations, and determine that Chariklo is consistent with an ellipsoid with semi-axes of 143.8-1.5+1.4, 135.2-2.8+1.4, and 99.1-2.7+5.4 km. Ultimately, we provided seven astrometric positions at a milliarcsecond accuracy level, based on Gaia EDR3, and use it to improve Chariklo's ephemeris. © B. E. Our latest shadow path prediction was favourable to a large region in Europe. Observations were arranged in a broad region inside the nominal shadow path. Series of images were obtained with 29 telescopes throughout Europe and from six of them (five in Spain and one in Greece) we detected the occultation. This is the fourth centaur, besides Chariklo, Chiron, and Bienor, for which a multichord stellar occultation is reported. By means of an elliptical fit to the occultation chords, we obtained the limb of 2002 GZ32 during the occultation, resulting in an ellipse with axes of 305 ± 17 km × 146 ± 8 km. From this limb, thanks to a rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we derived the geometric albedo of 2002 GZ32 (pV = 0.043 ± 0.007) and a 3D ellipsoidal shape with axes 366 km × 306 km × 120 km. This shape is not fully consistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium for the known rotation period of 2002 GZ32. The size (albedo) obtained from the occultation is respectively smaller (greater) than that derived from the radiometric technique but compatible within error bars. Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) and Centaurs are remnants of our planetary system formation, and their physical properties have invaluable information for evolutionary theories. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method for studying these distant small bodies and has presented exciting results. These observations can provide precise profiles of the involved body, allowing an accurate determination of its size and shape. Aims. The goal is to show that even single-chord detections of TNOs allow us to measure their milliarcsecond astrometric positions in the reference frame of the Gaia second data release (DR2). Accurate ephemerides can then be generated, allowing predictions of stellar occultations with much higher reliability. Methods. We analyzed data from various stellar occultation detections to obtain astrometric positions of the involved bodies. The events published before the Gaia era were updated so that the Gaia DR2 stellar catalog is the reference, thus providing accurate positions. Events with detection from one or two different sites (single or double chord) were analyzed to determine the event duration. Previously determined sizes were used to calculate the position of the object center and its corresponding error with respectto the detected chord and the International Celestial Reference System propagated Gaia DR2 star position. Results. We derive 37 precise astrometric positions for 19 TNOs and four Centaurs. Twenty-one of these events are presented here for the first time. Although about 68% of our results are based on single-chord detection, most have intrinsic precision at the submilliarcsecond level. Lower limits on the diameter of bodies such as Sedna, 2002 KX14, and Echeclus, and also shape constraints on 2002 VE95, 2003 FF128, and 2005 TV189 are presented as valuable byproducts. Conclusions. Using the Gaia DR2 catalog, we show that even a single detection of a stellar occultation allows improving the object ephemeris significantly, which in turn enables predicting a future stellar occultation with high accuracy. Transneptunian Objects (TNOs) are the remnants of our planetary system and can retain information about the early stages of the Solar System formation. Stellar occultation is a ground-based method used to study these distant bodies which have been presenting exciting results mainly about their physical properties. The big TNO called 2002 MS4 was discovered by Trujillo, C. A., & Brown, M. E., in 2002 using observations made at the Palomar Observatory (EUA). It is classified as a hot classical TNO, with orbital parameters a = 42 AU, e = 0.139, and i = 17.7º. Using thermal measurements with PACS (Herschel) and MIPS (Spitzer Space Telescope) instruments, Vilenius et al. 2012 obtained a radius of 467 +/- 23.5 km and an albedo of 0.051. Predictions of stellar occultations by this body in 2019 were obtained using the Gaia DR2 catalogue and NIMA ephemeris (Desmars et al. 2015) and made available in the Lucky Star web page (https://lesia.obspm.fr/lucky-star/). Four events were observed in South America and Canada. The first stellar occultation was detected on 09 July 2019, resulting in two positives and four negatives chords, including a close one which proven to be helpful to constrain the body’s size. This detection also allowed us to obtain a precise astrometric position that was used to update its ephemeris and improve the predictions of the following events. Two of them were detected on 26 July 2019, separated by eight hours. The first event was observed from South America and resulted in three positive detections, while the second, observed from Canada, resulted in a single chord. Another double chord event was observed on 19 August 2019 also from Canada. Due to its size, it is expected that 2002 MS4 is in hydrostatic equilibrium. Thirouin, A. 2013 obtained a rotational light curve of 2002 MS4 and determined two possible periods (7.33 h and 10.44 h) with low amplitude variation (0.05 +/- 0.01 mag). Admitting that it has a Maclaurin shape, the projected limb in the sky plane for Earth-based observers should be the same in the 09 July and 26 July events. The multi-chord detection allows determining an interval of parameters for size and shape. Considering that the same figure should have been observed in the 09 July event, we could use the both chords and the negative observations to constrain its physical parameters. With that, we could determine that 2002 MS4 has an equivalent radius of 385 +/- 1 km (Figure 1). Our results indicate that this TNO is about 100 km smaller in diameter than the value obtained by Vilenius et al. 2012, implying an albedo of 0.076 (Hv = 4.0 +/- 0.6) . The astrometric positions derived from these data were also helpful to improve forthcoming stellar occultations, in special the one crossing Europe on 08 August this year. More data from stellar occultations and observations of rotational light curves will help to confirm these results and assumptions. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global challenge, whose impacts on health systems around the world can be characterized as a kind of tragedy of the commons, in which the number of critically ill patients at the same time can quickly overcome the availability of medical equipment and the number of health professionals trained to provide the necessary assistance. This study aimed to discuss the behavioral factors involved in social problems similar to those faced during the current pandemic situation and, from there, explore strategies that can be used to enhance the adoption of actions and interventions aimed at minimizing the effects of COVID-19 on individuals and society as a whole. Behavioral processes involved in self-control and social cooperation were identified and described as related to a greater or lesser likelihood of adhering to the emergency measures necessary to cope with the pandemic, such as social distancing, the strengthening of hygiene habits, and the use of personal protective equipment. Based on the analytical-behavioral literature, we propose nine strategies of self-control and social cooperation that are configured as non-coercive alternatives to curb the progress of the disease, allowing the health systems to adequately serve all the people who need medical care at this time.Keywords: commons dilemma; decision-making; delay discounting; probability discounting; social discounting., A pandemia de COVID-19 se configura como um desafio global sem precedentes, cujos impactos sobre os sistemas de saúde ao redor do mundo podem ser caracterizados como uma espécie de tragédia dos comuns, na qual o número de pessoas adoecidas ao mesmo tempo pode superar rapidamente o número de equipamentos hospitalares e a quantidade de profissionais capacitados para prestar os atendimentos necessários. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo discorrer sobre os fatores comportamentais envolvidos em problemas sociais semelhantes aos enfrentados durante a atual situação de pandemia e, a partir disso, explorar estratégias que podem ser utilizadas para potencializar a adoção de ações e intervenções voltadas para minimizar os efeitos da COVID-19 sobre os indivíduos e sobre a sociedade como um todo. Processos comportamentais envolvidos no autocontrole e na cooperação social foram identificados e descritos como relacionados com uma maior ou menor probabilidade de adesão às medidas protetivas necessárias para o enfrentamento da pandemia, tais como o distanciamento social, o fortalecimento de hábitos de higiene e o uso de equipamentos de proteção individual. Com base na literatura analítico-comportamental, foram propostas nove estratégias de autocontrole e cooperação social que se configuram como alternativas não-coercitivas para se frear o avanço da doença, de modo a permitir que os sistemas de saúde atendam adequadamente todas as pessoas que precisem de cuidados médicos nesse momento.Palavras-chave: dilema dos comuns; tomada de decisão; desvalorização pelo atraso; desvalorização pela probabilidade; desvalorização social.

We present results from the first recorded stellar occultation by the large trans-Neptunian object (174567) Varda that was observed on September 10, 2018. Varda belongs to the high-inclination dynamically excited population, and has a satellite, Ilmarë, which is half the size of Varda. Aims. We determine the size and albedo of Varda and constrain its 3D shape and density. Methods. Thirteen different sites in the USA monitored the event, five of which detected an occultation by the main body. A best-fitting ellipse to the occultation chords provides the instantaneous limb of the body, from which the geometric albedo is computed. The size and shape of Varda are evaluated, and its bulk density is constrained using Varda's mass as is known from previous works. Results. The best-fitting elliptical limb has semi-major (equatorial) axis of (383 ± 3) km and an apparent oblateness of 0.066 ± 0.047, corresponding to an apparent area-equivalent radius R′equiv = (370±7) km and geometric albedo pv = 0.099 ± 0.002 assuming a visual absolute magnitude HV = 3.81 ± 0.01. Using three possible rotational periods for the body (4.76, 5.91, and 7.87 h), we derive corresponding MacLaurin solutions. Furthermore, given the low-amplitude (0.06 ± 0.01) mag of the single-peaked rotational light-curve for the aforementioned periods, we consider the double periods. For the 5.91 h period (the most probable) and its double (11.82 h), we find bulk densities and true oblateness of ρ = (1.78 ± 0.06) g cm-3, ϵ = 0.235 ± 0.050, and ρ = (1.23 ± 0.04) g cm-3, ϵ = 0.080 ± 0.049. In terms of scientific output, the best way to study solar system bodies is sending spacecraft to make in-situ measurements or to observe at close distance. Probably, the second best means to learn about important physical properties of solar system objects is through stellar occultations. By combining occultation observations from several sites, size and shape can be derived with kilometric accuracy. Also, atmospheric properties can be derived if the body has an atmosphere. Furthermore, the technique can detect rings and even satellites (although rarely) around the main body. Except for the very special cases of Pluto and Charon, stellar occultations by Transneptunian Objects (TNOs) had never been observed until October 2009. This was because the ephemeris of the TNOs have much larger uncertainties than their angular diameters (typically of the order of ~10 milliarcsecond) and also because stellar catalogs were not accurate to the milliarcsecond level. Despite the difficulties, at the time of this writing, 43 occultations by 22 different Trans-Neptunian Objects, and 17 occultations by 5 Centaurs have been detected thanks to the efforts of several teams. Due to the complications of accurately predicting and observing these events, most of the successes have been achieved through wide international collaboration, which is a key issue to succeed in observing stellar occultations by TNOs. Multichord occultations are typically detected at a rate of ~3 per year on average, whereas the majority of the observed occultations are single-chord detections, which means that only one site detects the occultation. In these cases, no tight constraints on size and shape can be derived from those observations alone. Deriving physical properties of trans-Neptunian objects is important for the understanding of our Solar System. This requires observational efforts and the development of techniques suitable for these studies. Aims. Our aim is to characterize the large trans-Neptunian object (TNO) 2002 TC302. Methods. Stellar occultations offer unique opportunities to determine key physical properties of TNOs. On 28 January 2018, 2002 TC302 occulted a mv ∼ 15.3 star with designation 593-005847 in the UCAC4 stellar catalog, corresponding to Gaia source 130957813463146112. Twelve positive occultation chords were obtained from Italy, France, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Also, four negative detections were obtained near the north and south limbs. This represents the best observed stellar occultation by a TNO other than Pluto in terms of the number of chords published thus far. From the 12 chords, an accurate elliptical fit to the instantaneous projection of the body can be obtained that is compatible with the near misses. Results. The resulting ellipse has major and minor axes of 543 ± 18 km and 460 ± 11 km, respectively, with a position angle of 3 ± 1 degrees for the minor axis. This information, combined with rotational light curves obtained with the 1.5 m telescope at Sierra Nevada Observatory and the 1.23 m telescope at Calar Alto observatory, allows us to derive possible three-dimensional shapes and density estimations for the body based on hydrostatic equilibrium assumptions. The effective diameter in equivalent area is around 84 km smaller than the radiometrically derived diameter using thermal data from Herschel and Spitzer Space Telescopes. This might indicate the existence of an unresolved satellite of up to ∼300 km in diameter, which is required to account for all the thermal flux, although the occultation and thermal diameters are compatible within their error bars given the considerable uncertainty of the thermal results. The existence of a potential satellite also appears to be consistent with other ground-based data presented here. From the effective occultation diameter combined with absolute magnitude measurements we derive a geometric albedo of 0.147 ± 0.005, which would be somewhat smaller if 2002 TC302 has a satellite. We present the astrometry of the five largest satellites of Uranus from observations spread over almost three decades with photographic plates and CCDs (mainly), taken at the Pico dos Dias Observatory - Brazil. All positions presented here are obtained from the reanalysis of measurements and images used in previous publications. Reference stars are those from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) allowing, in addition to a higher accuracy, a larger number of positions of the largest satellites as compared to our previous works. From 1982 to 1987, positions were obtained from photographic plates. From 1989 to 2011, CCDs were used. On average, we obtained $\Delta\alpha{\rm cos}\delta=-11~(\pm52)$ milli-arcseconds and $\Delta\delta=-14~(\pm43)$ milli-arcseconds for the differences in the sense observation minus ephemerides (DE435$+$ura111). Comparisons with different ephemerides (DE440, INPOP21a, INPOP19a and NOE-7-2013-MAIN) and results from stellar occultations indicate a possible offset in the (Solar System) barycentric position of the Uranian system barycenter. We present new results from the Parallaxes of Southern Extremely Cool dwarfs program to measure parallaxes, proper motions and multi-epoch photometry of L and early T dwarfs. The observations were made on 108 nights over the course of 8 years using the Wide Field Imager on the ESO 2.2m telescope. We present 118 new parallaxes of L \& T dwarfs of which 52 have no published values and 24 of the 66 published values are preliminary estimates from this program. The parallax precision varies from 1.0 to 15.5 mas with a median of 3.8 mas. We find evidence for 2 objects with long term photometric variation and 24 new moving group candidates. We cross-match our sample to published photometric catalogues and find standard magnitudes in up to 16 pass-bands from which we build spectral energy distributions and H-R diagrams. This allows us to confirm the theoretically anticipated minimum in radius between stars and brown dwarfs across the hydrogen burning minimum mass. We find the minimum occurs between L2 and L6 and verify the predicted steep dependence of radius in the hydrogen burning regime and the gentle rise into the degenerate brown dwarf regime. No probes will orbit the system before 2040. New high-precision mutual phenomena measurements will only occur in 2050. Besides, Uranus is slowly passing through a sky region without many stars, which makes it difficult to map field of view (FOV) distortions below 50 mas. In this context, the new astrometric technique of mutual approximations comes in handy. It measures central instants at the closest approach between two moving satellites in the sky plane. Measurements are made on small portions of the FOV, benefiting from the so-called precision premium. Approximations and mutual phenomena share geometric principles and parameters, with similar precision in the central instant as indicated by first applications to the Jovian moons. However, mutual phenomena can only be observed at the planet's equinoxes, while approximations always occur. Central instants do not depend on reference stars and are useful in orbit and ephemeris fittings. Here, we present results for 23 mutual approximations between the five main Uranus satellites observed in Brazil during 2015-2018 with a 1.6 m aperture telescope. Digital coronagraphy mitigated Uranus' scattered light, improving measurements for Miranda, Ariel and Umbriel. We measured the impact parameter and relative velocity in milliarcseconds for the first time by using a variant of the method. Relative position errors, including Miranda, were 45 mas per coordinate, twice as good as in classical CCD astrometry for this satellite, and comparable to mutual phenomena. This shows the potential of mutual approximations for improving the current orbits and ephemerides of Uranus' moons. Arima as a tool to predict water quality using time series recorded with UV-Vis spectrometers in a constructed wetland. Water Technology and Sciences (in Spanish), 8 (5), 127-139. The prediction of water quality plays a crucial role in discussions about urban drainage systems, given that the integrated management of this resource is required in order to meet human needs. The present paper uses Arima (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) to predict influent and effluent water quality in a constructed wetland, as well as its pollutant removal efficiency. The wetland is located on the campus of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. Arima prediction values were based on time series obtained with UV-Vis spectrometry probes. These predictions were found to be adequate for the first 12 hours of the water quality time series for the three data sets analyzed: influent, effluent, and efficiency. Overall, none of the data had prediction errors over 15%. In separate analyses of the relative predictive errors in influent and effluent values, they were found to be less significant for UV wavelengths than for the visible range (Vis). In addition, the variability in this type of error was less for the UV range than for the Vis range, which indicates that Arima is a suitable prediction method for analyzing pollutants that fall in the UV range.

Stellar occultations are a unique technique to access physical characteristics of distant solar system objects from the ground. They allow the measure of the size and the shape at kilometric level, the detection of tenuous atmospheres (few nanobars), and the investigation of close vicinity (satellites, rings) of Transneptunian objects and Centaurs. This technique is made successful thanks to accurate predictions of occultations. Accuracy of the predictions depends on the uncertainty in the position of the occulted star and the object's orbit. The Gaia stellar catalogue (Gaia Collaboration (2017)) now allows to get accurate astrometric stellar positions (to the mas level). The main uncertainty remains on the orbit. In this context, we now take advantage of the NIMA method (Desmars et al.(2015)) for the orbit determination and of the Gaia DR1 catalogue for the astrometry. In this document, we show how the orbit determination is improved by reducing current and some past observations with Gaia DR1. Moreover, we also use more than 45 past positive occultations observed in the 2009-2017 period to derive very accurate astrometric positions only depending on the position of the occulted stars (about few mas with Gaia DR1). We use the case of (10199) Chariklo as an illustration. The main limitation lies in the imprecision of the proper motions which is going to be solved by the Gaia DR2 release.

Progress in astrometry and orbital modelling of planetary moons in the last decade enabled better determinations of their orbits. These studies need accurate positions spread over extended periods. We present the results of the 2014-2015 Brazilian campaign for 40 mutual events from 47 observed light curves by the Galilean satellites plus one eclipse of Amalthea by Ganymede. We also reanalysed and updated results for 25 mutual events observed in the 2009 campaign. All telescopes were equipped with narrow-band filters centred at 889 nm with a width of 15 nm to eliminate the scattered light from Jupiter. The albedos' ratio was determined using images before and after each event. We simulated images of moons, umbra, and penumbra in the sky plane, and integrated their fluxes to compute albedos, simulate light curves and fit them to the observed ones using a chi-square fitting procedure. For that, we used the complete version of the Oren-Nayer reflectance model. The relative satellite positions mean uncertainty was 11.2 mas ($\sim$35 km) and 10.1 mas ($\sim$31 km) for the 2014-2015 and 2009 campaigns respectively. The simulated and observed \textsc{ascii} light curve files are freely available in electronic form at the \textit{Natural Satellites DataBase} (NSDB). The 40/25 mutual events from our 2014-2015/2009 campaigns represent a significant contribution of 17%/15% in comparison with the PHEMU campaigns lead by the IMCCE. Besides that, our result for the eclipse of Amalthea is only the 4$^{th}$ such measurement ever published after the three ones observed by the 2014-2015 international PHEMU campaign. Context. Bright stellar positions are now known with an uncertainty below 1 mas thanks to Gaia DR2. Between 2019-2020, the Galactic plane will be the background of Jupiter. The dense stellar background will lead to an increase in the number of occultations, while the Gaia DR2 catalogue will reduce the prediction uncertainties for the shadow path. Aims. We observed a stellar occultation by the Galilean moon Europa (J2) and propose a campaign for observing stellar occultations for all Galilean moons. Methods. During a predicted period of time, we measured the light flux of the occulted star and the object to determine the time when the flux dropped with respect to one or more reference stars, and the time that it rose again for each observational station. The chords obtained from these observations allowed us to determine apparent sizes, oblatness, and positions with kilometre accuracy. Results. We present results obtained from the first stellar occultation by the Galilean moon Europa observed on 2017 March 31. The apparent fitted ellipse presents an equivalent radius of 1561.2 $\pm$ 3.6 km and oblatenesses 0.0010 $\pm$ 0.0028. A very precise Europa position was determined with an uncertainty of 0.8 mas. We also present prospects for a campaign to observe the future events that will occur between 2019 and 2021 for all Galilean moons. Conclusions. Stellar occultation is a suitable technique for obtaining physical parameters and highly accurate positions of bright satellites close to their primary. A number of successful events can render the 3D shapes of the Galilean moons with high accuracy. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo central discutir a viabilidade da adequação da tutela jurisdicional em favor de pessoas em situação de vulnerabilidade. Para alcance do escopo delineado a pesquisa dividiu-se em três partes. Na primeira etapa promoveu-se uma revisão bibliográfica acerca do instituto tutela jurisdicional abordando sua evolução histórica, teorias conceituais e principais classificações, sem prescindir de apontamentos referentes à importância da categoria para o estudo do processo civil contemporâneo à luz de uma perspectiva humanista. Na segunda etapa aprofundou-se o estudo jurídico da vulnerabilidade, evidenciando sua trajetória histórica, aportes filosóficos, conceito, espécies, classificações e fundamentos jurídicos de proteção. Na terceira etapa, investigou-se a relação entre vulnerabilidade e processo, destacando a importância de se buscar um processo civil inclusivo, participativo e não discriminatório. A seguir foram erigidas algumas balizas científicas para a adequação da tutela jurisdicional, tais como a consideração da condição vulnerável e a aplicação de vetores metodológicos, sendo exploradas hipóteses específicas de adequação, compilação que procurou sistematizar tanto técnicas processuais já previstas nas legislações protetivas, quanto hipóteses concretas de adaptação à luz do Código Processual de 2015. Por fim, cogitou-se da aplicação de um microssistema processual de proteção às vulnerabilidades. The main goal of this study is to discuss the viability of procedural adaptation in favor of people in vulnerable situation. In order to reach the pointed scope, the research was divided in three parts. At the first stage, it promoted a bibliographical review about the judicial protection institute, insight of its historical evolution, conceptual theories and main classifications, without regarding the importance of the category for the contemporary study of civil procedure under its humanistic perspective. On the second stage, it deepened the juridical study of vulnerability, evidencing its historical trajectory, philosophical contributions, concept, species and classifications, as well as the main legal protection basis. Finally, in the third stage, it investigated the relationship between vulnerability and civil procedure, highlighting the importance of an inclusive, participatory and non-discriminatory civil procedure. Therefore, it established some scientific basis, such as the procedural consideration about vulnerable condition and the application of methodological principles. Hereafter, it explored specific hypotheses of procedural adequacy, compilation that meant to systematize both the procedural techniques already provided in the protective legislations and the concrete adaptions under the Procedural Code of 2015. The tenuous nitrogen (N2) atmosphere on Pluto undergoes strong seasonal effects due to high obliquity and orbital eccentricity, and has recently (July 2015) been observed by the New Horizons spacecraft. Aims. The main goals of this study are (i) to construct a well calibrated record of the seasonal evolution of surface pressure on Pluto and (ii) to constrain the structure of the lower atmosphere using a central flash observed in 2015. Methods. Eleven stellar occultations by Pluto observed between 2002 and 2016 are used to retrieve atmospheric profiles (density, pressure, temperature) between altitude levels of ~5 and ~380 km (i.e. pressures from ~ 10 μbar to 10 nbar). Results. (i) Pressure has suffered a monotonic increase from 1988 to 2016, that is compared to a seasonal volatile transport model, from which tight constraints on a combination of albedo and emissivity of N2 ice are derived. Transneptunian objects (TNOs) are a source of invaluable information to access the history and evolution of the outer solar system. However, observing these faint objects is a difficult task. As a consequence, important properties such as size and albedo are known for only a small fraction of them. Now, with the results from deep sky surveys and the Gaia space mission, a new exciting era is within reach as accurate predictions of stellar occultations by numerous distant small solar system bodies become available. From them, diameters with kilometer accuracies can be determined. Albedos, in turn, can be obtained from diameters and absolute magnitudes. We use observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) from November 2012 until February 2016, amounting to 4292847 CCD frames. We searched them for all known small solar system bodies and recovered a total of 202 TNOs and Centaurs, 63 of which have been discovered by the DES collaboration until the date of this writing. Their positions were determined using the Gaia Data Release 2 as reference and their orbits were refined. Stellar occultations were then predicted using these refined orbits plus stellar positions from Gaia. These predictions are maintained, and updated, in a dedicated web service. The techniques developed here are also part of an ambitious preparation to use the data from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), that expects to obtain accurate positions and multifilter photometry for tens of thousands of TNOs., 25 pages, submitted to Astronomical Journal

We report six stellar occultations by (Saturn IX) Phoebe, an irregular satellite of Saturn, obtained between mid-2017 and mid-2019. The 2017 July 06 event is the first stellar occultation by an irregular satellite ever observed. The occultation chords were compared to a 3D shape model of the satellite obtained from Cassini observations. The rotation period available in the literature led to a sub-observer point at the moment of the observed occultations where the chords could not fit the 3D model. A procedure was developed to identify the correct sub-observer longitude. It allowed us to obtain the rotation period with improved precision over currently known value from literature. We show that the difference between the observed and the predicted sub-observer longitude suggests two possible solutions for the rotation period. By comparing these values with recently observed rotational light curves and single-chord stellar occultations, we can identify the best solution for Phoebe's rotational period as $9.27365 \pm 0.00002$ h. From the stellar occultations, we also obtained 6 geocentric astrometric positions in the ICRS as realised by the Gaia-DR2 with uncertainties at the 1-mas level., Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

From 1988 to 2016, several stellar occultations have been observed to characterise Pluto's atmosphere and its evolution. From each stellar occultation, an accurate astrometric position of Pluto at the observation epoch is derived. These positions mainly depend on the position of the occulted star and the precision of the timing. Aims. We present 19 Pluto's astrometric positions derived from occultations from 1988 to 2016. Using Gaia DR2 for the positions of the occulted stars, the accuracy of these positions is estimated at 2-10 mas, depending on the observation circumstances. From these astrometric positions, we derive an updated ephemeris of Pluto's system barycentre using the NIMA code. Methods. The astrometric positions were derived by fitting the light curves of the occultation by a model of Pluto's atmosphere. The fits provide the observed position of the centre for a reference star position. In most cases other publications provided the circumstances of the occultation such as the coordinates of the stations, timing, and impact parameter, i.e. the closest distance between the station and centre of the shadow. From these parameters, we used a procedure based on the Bessel method to derive an astrometric position. Results. We derive accurate Pluto's astrometric positions from 1988 to 2016. These positions are used to refine the orbit of Pluto'system barycentre providing an ephemeris, accurate to the milliarcsecond level, over the period 2000-2020, allowing for better predictions for future stellar occultations.© J. The technique of mutual approximations accurately gives the central instant at the maximum apparent approximation of two moving natural satellites in the sky plane. This can be used in ephemeris fitting to infer the relative positions between satellites with high precision. Only the mutual phenomena -- occultations and eclipses -- may achieve better results. However, mutual phenomena only occur every six years in the case of Jupiter. Mutual approximations do not have this restriction and can be observed at any time along the year as long as the satellites are visible. In this work, we present 104 central instants determined from the observations of 66 mutual approximations between the Galilean moons carried out at different sites in Brazil and France during the period 2016--2018. For 28 events we have at least two independent observations. All telescopes were equipped with a narrow-band filter centred at 889 nm with a width of 15 nm to eliminate the scattered light from Jupiter. The telescope apertures ranged between 25--120 cm. For comparison, the precision of the positions obtained with classical CCD astrometry is about 100 mas, for mutual phenomena it can achieve 10 mas or less and the average internal precision obtained with mutual approximations was 11.3 mas. This new kind of simple, yet accurate observations can significantly improve the orbits and ephemeris of Galilean satellites and thus be very useful for the planning of future space missions aiming at the Jovian system., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We present results from three world-wide campaigns that resulted in the detections of two single-chord and one multi-chord stellar occultations by the plutino object (84922) 2003 VS2. From the single-chord occultations in 2013 and 2014 we obtained accurate astrometric positions for the object, while from the multi-chord occultation on 2014 November 7, we obtained the parameters of the best-fitting ellipse to the limb of the body at the time of occultation. We also obtained short-term photometry data for the body in order to derive its rotational phase during the occultation. The rotational light curve present a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.141 ± 0.009 mag. This allows us to reconstruct the 3D shape of the body, with principal semi-axes of a = 313.8 ± 7.1 km, b = 265.5- + 9.8 8.8 km, and c = 247.3- + 43.6 26.6 km, which is not consistent with a Jacobi triaxial equilibrium figure. The derived spherical volume equivalent diameter of 548.3- + 44.6 29.5 km is about 5% larger than the radiometric diameter of 2003 VS2 derived from Herschel data of 523 ± 35 km, but still compatible with it within error bars. From those results we can also derive the geometric albedo (0.123- + 0.014 0.015) and, under the assumption that the object is a Maclaurin spheroid, the density r = 1400- + 300 1000 for the plutino. The disappearances and reappearances of the star during the occultations do not show any compelling evidence for a global atmosphere considering a pressure upper limit of about 1 microbar for a pure nitrogen atmosphere, nor secondary features (e.g., rings or satellite) around the main body. © 2019. Gomes-J\'unior et al. (2015) published 3613 positions for the 8 largest irregular satellites of Jupiter and 1787 positions for the largest irregular satellite of Saturn, Phoebe. These observations were made between 1995 and 2014 and have an estimated error of about 60 to 80 mas. Based on this set of positions, we derived new orbits for the eight largest irregular satellites of Jupiter: Himalia, Elara, Pasiphae, Carme, Lysithea, Sinope, Ananke and Leda. For Phoebe we updated the ephemeris from Desmars et al. (2013) using 75% more positions than the previous one. Due to their orbital characteristics, it is common belief that the irregular satellites were captured by the giant planets in the early Solar System, but there is no consensus for a single model explaining where they were formed. Size, shape, albedo and composition would help to trace back their true origin, but these physical parameters are yet poorly known for irregular satellites. The observation of stellar occultations would allow for the determination of such parameters. Indeed Jupiter will cross the galactic plane in 2019-2020 and Saturn in 2018, improving a lot the chances of observing such events in the near future. Using the derived ephemerides and the UCAC4 catalogue we managed to identify 5442 candidate stellar occultations between January 2016 and December 2020 for the 9 satellites studied here. This study proposes the use of an experimental analogue of natural resource exploitation to evaluate the effects of the real-time displaying of the amount of available resources and the provision of written feedback messages on the resource extraction behavior of participants sharing a common-pool whereby participants are physically and verbally isolated from each other. The experiment involved the application of a three-member common-pool resources (CPR) game. The members of the groups sharing the CPR were changed periodically and were allowed to talk briefly to each other so that an experienced participant could give instructions to a newcomer. In this way, it was also possible to evaluate how the accuracy of instructions regarding resource preservation and sustainability affects group member resource extraction patterns and CPR maintenance in the long run. Twenty-two college students took part and were distributed into three groups: Control, Display, and Feedback. The amount of resources extracted individually and by the groups in every round of the game was analyzed, as were the verbal responses of the experienced participants when giving instructions to newcomers. Results showed that the manipulated variables were effective for the short-term decrease in the amount of resources extracted by the members of the Display and Feedback groups. The accuracy of the instructions was also important for the sustained maintenance of the pattern of consumption established by the manipulated variables, leading to the recovery and the preservation of the resources in a greater number of the game’s rounds.

Distant objects in the solar system are crucial to better understand the history and evolution of its outskirts. The stellar occultation technique allows the determination of their sizes and shapes with kilometric accuracy, a detailed investigation of their immediate vicinities, as well as the detection of tenuous atmospheres. The prediction of such events is a key point in this study, and yet accurate enough predictions are available to a handful of objects only. In this work, we briefly discuss the dramatic impact that both the astrometry from the Gaia space mission and the deep sky surveys -- the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in particular -- will have on the prediction of stellar occultations and how they may influence the future of the study of distant small solar system bodies through this technique., 10 pages, 3 figures, ACM2017

We use data from five stellar occultations observed between 2013 and 2016 to constrain Chariklo's size and shape, and the ring reflectivity. We consider four possible models for Chariklo (sphere, Maclaurin spheroid, tri-axial ellipsoid and Jacobi ellipsoid) and we use a Bayesian approach to estimate the corresponding parameters. The spherical model has a radius $R=129\pm3$ km. The Maclaurin model has equatorial and polar radii $a=b=143^{+3}_{-6}$ km and $c=96^{+14}_{-4}$ km, respectively, with density $970^{+300}_{-180}$ kg m$^{-3}$. The ellipsoidal model has semiaxes $a=148^{+6}_{-4}$ km, $b=132^{+6}_{-5}$ km and $c=102^{+10}_{-8}$ km. Finally, the Jacobi model has semiaxes $a$=157$\pm$4 km, $b$=139$\pm$ 4 km and $c$=86$\pm$1 km, and density $796^{+2}_{-4}$ kg m$^{-3}$ . Depending on the model, we obtain topographic features of 6-11 km, typical of Saturn icy satellites with similar size and density. We constrain Chariklo's geometric albedo between 3.1\% (sphere) and 4.9\% (ellipsoid), while the ring $I/F$ reflectivity is less constrained between 0.6\% (Jacobi) and 8.9\% (sphere). The ellipsoid model explains both the optical light curve and the long-term photometry variation of the system, giving a plausible value for the geometric albedo of the ring particles of $10-15\%$. The derived Chariklo's mass of 6-8$\times10^{18}$ kg places the rings close to the 3:1 resonance between the ring mean motion and Chariklo's rotation period., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Behavior analysts have investigated sustainable practices since the 1970s. Nonetheless, such researches are limited in coverage of the research/intervention targets, long-term maintenance of pro-environmental behavior, and its dissemination to a broad public. The present research aimed to identify the main intervention/analysis targets and the main contribution of articles published between 2005 and 2016 in the journal Behavior and Social Issues. The articles were identified by the descriptors: sustainability, sustainable, global warming, climate change, pro-environmental behavior, environmental protection, environmental conservation, recycling, and energy use. Of the 13 articles analyzed, nine investigated, theoretically, new units of analysis/intervention, the relation between psychological processes and sustainability, and the effects of immediate and delayed consequences on sustainable choices. Four articles investigated the effects of antecedents, consequents, and rules on recycling, on energy consumption, on the transmission of sustainable practices in a laboratory microsociety, and on the adaptation of a commercial building. The present review provides an overview of the area and has the potential to guide researchers, students, and interested audiences in the search for relevant variables and strategies to promote pro-environmental practices.Keywords: sustainability, pro-environmental behavior, behavior analysis, Analistas do comportamento têm investigado práticas sustentáveis desde a década de 1970. Os artigos foram identificados por meio dos descritores: sustentabilidade, sustentável, aquecimento global, mudança climática, comportamento pró-ambiental, proteção ambiental, conservação ambiental, reciclagem, e uso de energia. Dos 13 artigos analisados, nove investigaram, teoricamente, novas unidades de análise/intervenção, a relação entre processos psicológicos e sustentabilidade, e os efeitos de consequências imediatas e atrasadas em escolhas sustentáveis. Quatro artigos investigaram empiricamente o efeito de variáveis antecedentes, consequentes, e regras no aumento da reciclagem, na redução do consumo de energia, na transmissão de práticas sustentáveis em uma micro sociedade laboratorial, e na adaptação de um estabelecimento comercial. Schindler, K. et. al., Context. A stellar occultation by a trans-Neptunian object (TNO) provides an opportunity to probe the size and shape of these distant solar system bodies. In the past seven years, several occultations by TNOs have been observed, but mostly from a single location. Only very few TNOs have been sampled simultaneously from multiple locations. Sufficient data that enable a robust estimation of shadow size through an ellipse fit could only be obtained for two objects. Aims. We present the first observation of an occultation by the TNO 2007 UK126 on 15 November 2014, measured by three observers, one nearly on and two almost symmetrical to the shadow's centerline. This is the first multi-chord dataset obtained for a so-called detached object, a TNO subgroup with perihelion distances so large that the giant planets have likely not perturbed their orbits. We also revisit Herschel/PACS far-infrared data, applying a new reduction method to improve the accuracy of the measured fluxes. Combining both datasets allows us to comprehensively characterize 2007 UK126. Methods. We use error-in-variable regression to solve the non-linear problem of propagating timing errors into uncertainties of the ellipse parameters. Based on the shadow's size and a previously reported rotation period, we expect a shape of a Maclaurin spheroid and derive a geometrically plausible size range. To refine our size estimate of 2007 UK126, we model its thermal emission using a thermophysical model code. We conduct a parametric study to predict far-infrared fluxes and compare them to the Herschel/PACS measurements. Results. The favorable geometry of our occultation chords, combined with minimal dead-time imaging, and precise GPS time measurements, allow for an accurate estimation of the shadow size (best-fitting ellipse with axes 645.80 +/- 5.68 km x 597.81 +/- 12.74 km) and the visual geometric albedo (p(V) = 15.0 +/- 1.6%). By combining our analyses of the occultation and the far-infrared data, we can constrain the effective diameter of 2007 UK126 to d(eff) = 599-629 km. Ortiz, José Luis et. al., Haumea-one of the four known trans-Neptunian dwarf planets- is a very elongated and rapidly rotating body1-3. In contrast to other dwarf planets4-6, its size, shape, albedo and density are not well constrained. The Centaur Chariklo was the first body other than a giant planet known to have a ring system7, and the Centaur Chiron was later found to possess something similar to Chariklo's rings8,9. Here we report observations from multiple Earth-based observatories of Haumea passing in front of a distant star (a multichord stellar occultation). Secondary events observed around the main body of Haumea are consistent with the presence of a ring with an opacity of 0.5, width of 70 kilometres and radius of about 2,287 kilometres. The ring is coplanar with both Haumea's equator and the orbit of its satellite Hi'iaka. The radius of the ring places it close to the 3:1 mean-motion resonance with Haumea's spin period-that is, Haumea rotates three times on its axis in the time that a ring particle completes one revolution. The occultation by the main body provides an instantaneous elliptical projected shape with axes of about 1,704 kilometres and 1,138 kilometres. Combined with rotational light curves, the occultation constrains the three-dimensional orientation of Haumea and its triaxial shape, which is inconsistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium. Haumea's largest axis is at least 2,322 kilometres, larger than previously thought, implying an upper limit for its density of 1,885 kilograms per cubic metre and a geometric albedo of 0.51, both smaller than previous estimates1,10,11. In addition, this estimate of the density of Haumea is closer to that of Pluto than are previous estimates, in line with expectations. Benedetti-Rossi, G. et. al., We present results derived from the first multi-chord stellar occultation by the trans-Neptunian object (229762) 2007 UK, observed on 2014 November 15. The event was observed by the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network project and International Occultation Timing Association collaborators throughout the United States. Use of two different data analysis methods obtain a satisfactory fit to seven chords, yielding an elliptical fit to the chords with an equatorial radius of R = 338 km and equivalent radius of R = 319 km. A circular fit also gives a radius of R = 324 km. Assuming that the object is a Maclaurin spheroid with indeterminate aspect angle, and using two published absolute magnitudes for the body, we derive possible ranges for geometric albedo between p = 0.159 and p = 0.189 , and for the body oblateness between ∈ = 0.105 and ∈ = 0.118 . We obtained improved optical positions for 300 ICRF2 sources - the Rio survey. We compared the Rio survey with 10 other selected optical astrometric surveys and studied the link between the Hipparcos Catalogue Reference Frame (HCRF) and the International Celestial Reference Frame, Second Realization (ICRF2). We investigated the possible causes for the observed non-coincidence between the optical and ICRF2 positions. The Rio survey positions were referred to the second version of the United States Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC2), currently the best tested HCRF densification. The sources are between -90 degrees < delta < +30 degrees. We used two telescopes with suitable diameters and focal lengths to properly link the observed ICRF2 sources with the UCAC2, using intermediate brightness stars. We certified the astrometry done with many statistical tests. The average 'optical minus ICRF2' offsets and respective standard deviations in (alpha, delta) were -3 mas (41 mas) and +4 (45 mas). The Rio survey represents well the zero-point offset of the other surveys. The standard error of 3.5 mas found for the HCRF/ICRF2 link indicates an error excess that can be originated by a non-coincidence between the observed optical/VLBI positions. We thus discussed the influence of the errors from the UCAC2. Then, we searched for correlations with the source morphology, represented by structure indices defined in the radio and in the optical domain. Finally, we studied how the position offsets could originate from the perturbation of the optical point spread function (PSF) of the source's core, by a second source of flux. We found an analytical relation that describes the resulting centroid shift, as a function of the atmospheric seeing, the brightness ratio and the relative distance between the two contributing flux sources. Two scenarios, modelled by this relation, are discussed: an extinction window in the dust torus nearby the core, and a Galactic star near the line of sight.

Typically we can deliver astrometric positions of natural satellites with errors in the 50-150 mas range. Apparent distances from mutual phenomena, have much smaller errors, less than 10 mas. However, this method can only be applied during the equinox of the planets. We developed a method that can provide accurate astrometric data for natural satellites -- the mutual approximations. The method can be applied when any two satellites pass close by each other in the apparent sky plane. The fundamental parameter is the central instant $t_0$ of the passage when the distances reach a minimum. We applied the method for the Galilean moons. All observations were made with a 0.6 m telescope with a narrow-band filter centred at 889 nm with width of 15 nm which attenuated Jupiter's scattered light. We obtained central instants for 14 mutual approximations observed in 2014-2015. We determined $t_0$ with an average precision of 3.42 mas (10.43 km). For comparison, we also applied the method for 5 occultations in the 2009 mutual phenomena campaign and for 22 occultations in the 2014-2015 campaign. The comparisons of $t_0$ determined by our method with the results from mutual phenomena show an agreement by less than 1-sigma error in $t_0$, typically less than 10 mas. International audience; We present results from a multi-chord Pluto stellar occultation observed on 2015 June 29 from New Zealand and Australia. This occurred only two weeks before the NASA New Horizons flyby of the Pluto system and serves as a useful comparison between ground-based and space results. We find that Pluto's atmosphere is still expanding, with a significant pressure increase of 5 ± 2% since 2013 and a factor of almost three since 1988. This trend rules out, as of today, an atmospheric collapse associated with Pluto's recession from the Sun. A central flash, a rare occurrence, was observed from several sites in New Zealand. The flash shape and amplitude are compatible with a spherical and transparent atmospheric layer of roughly 3 km in thickness whose base lies at about 4 km above Pluto's surface, and where an average thermal gradient of about 5 K km−1 prevails. We discuss the possibility that small departures between the observed and modeled flash are caused by local topographic features (mountains) along Pluto's limb that block the stellar light. Finally, using two possible temperature profiles, and extrapolating our pressure profile from our deepest accessible level down to the surface, we obtain a possible range of 11.9–13.7 μbar for the surface pressure.

The icy dwarf planet Makemake has projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 and 1,502 ± 45 km and a V-band geometric albedo larger than Pluto’s but smaller than Eris’s, with no global Pluto-like atmosphere. Makemake is thought to be the third-largest dwarf planet in our Solar System, a little smaller than Pluto and Eris, but until now knowledge of its size and albedo were only approximate. This paper reports the results of observations of the occultation of a faint star known as NOMAD 1181-0235723 by Makemake on 23 April 2011. The data confirm that Makemake is smaller than Pluto and Eris, with axes of 1,430±9 km and 1,502±45 km. Makemake's mean geometric albedo — the ratio of light reflected to light received — is intermediate between that of Pluto and that of Eris. All three are icy, making them among the most reflective objects in the Solar System. And the occultation light curves rule out the presence of a global Pluto-like atmosphere on Makemake, although the presence of dark terrain might imply the presence of a localized atmosphere. Pluto and Eris are icy dwarf planets with nearly identical sizes, comparable densities and similar surface compositions as revealed by spectroscopic studies1,2. Pluto possesses an atmosphere whereas Eris does not; the difference probably arises from their differing distances from the Sun, and explains their different albedos3. Makemake is another icy dwarf planet with a spectrum similar to Eris and Pluto4, and is currently at a distance to the Sun intermediate between the two. Although Makemake’s size (1,420 ± 60 km) and albedo are roughly known5,6, there has been no constraint on its density and there were expectations that it could have a Pluto-like atmosphere4,7,8. Here we report the results from a stellar occultation by Makemake on 2011 April 23. Our preferred solution that fits the occultation chords corresponds to a body with projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 km (1σ) and 1,502 ± 45 km, implying a V-band geometric albedo pV = 0.77 ± 0.03. This albedo is larger than that of Pluto, but smaller than that of Eris. The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4–12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible. A density of 1.7 ± 0.3 g cm−3 is inferred from the data.

The stellar occultation technique is a powerful tool to study distant small solar system bodies. Currently, around 2 500 trans-neptunian objects (TNOs) and Centaurs are known. With the astrometry from Gaia and large surveys like the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), accurate predictions of occultation events will be available to tens of thousands of TNOs and Centaurs and boost the knowledge of the outer solar system.

We report on the results of a six-month photometric study of the main-belt binary C-type asteroid 121 Hermione, performed during its 2007 opposition. We took advantage of the rare observational opportunity afforded by one of the annual equinoxes of Hermione occurring close to its opposition in June 2007. The equinox provides an edge-on aspect for an Earth-based observer, which is well suited to a thorough study of Hermione's physical characteristics. The catalog of observations carried out with small telescopes is presented in this work, together with new adaptive optics (AO) imaging obtained between 2005 and 2008 with the Yepun 8-m VLT telescope and the 10-m Keck telescope. The most striking result is confirmation that Hermione is a bifurcated and elongated body, as suggested by Marchis et al., (2005). A new effective diameter of 187 +/- 6 km was calculated from the combination of AO, photometric and thermal observations. The new diameter is some 10% smaller than the hitherto accepted radiometric diameter based on IRAS data. The reason for the discrepancy is that IRAS viewed the system almost pole-on. New thermal observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope agree with the diameter derived from AO and lightcurve observations. On the basis of the new AO astrometric observations of the small 32-km diameter satellite we have refined the orbit solution and derived a new value of the bulk density of Hermione of 1.4 +0.5/-0.2 g cm-3. The large number and all-sky distribution of quasars from different surveys, along with their presence in large, deep astrometric catalogs,enables the building of an optical materialization of the ICRS following its defining principles. Namely: that it is kinematically non-rotating with respect to the ensemble of distant extragalactic objects; aligned with the mean equator and dynamical equinox of J2000; and realized by a list of adopted coordinates of extragalatic sources. Starting from the updated and presumably complete LQAC list of QSOs, the initial optical positions of those quasars are found in the USNO B1.0 and GSC2.3 catalogs, and from the SDSS DR5. The initial positions are next placed onto UCAC2-based reference frames, following by an alignment with the ICRF, to which were added the most precise sources from the VLBA calibrator list and the VLA calibrator list - when reliable optical counterparts exist. Finally, the LQRF axes are inspected through spherical harmonics, contemplating to define right ascension, declination and magnitude terms. The LQRF contains J2000 referred equatorial coordinates for 100,165 quasars, well represented across the sky, from -83.5 to +88.5 degrees in declination, and with 10 arcmin being the average distance between adjacent elements. The global alignment with the ICRF is 1.5 mas, and the individual position accuracies are represented by a Poisson distribution that peaks at 139 mas in right ascension and 130 mas in declination. It is complemented by redshift and photometry information from the LQAC. International audience; Every 42 years, the Earth and the Sun pass through the plane of the orbits of the main satellites of Uranus. In these occasions, mutual occultations and eclipses between these bodies can be seen from the Earth. The current Uranus equinox from 2007 to 2009 offers a precious opportunity to observe these events. Here, we present the analysis of five occultations and two eclipses observed from Brazil during 2007. For the reduction of the CCD images, we developed a digital coronagraphic method that removed the planet's scattered light around the satellites. A simple geometric model of the occultation/eclipse was used to fit the observed light curves. Dynamical quantities such as the impact parameter, the relative speed, and the central time of the event were then obtained with precisions of 7.6 km, 0.18 km s-1, and 2.9 s, respectively. These results can be further used to improve the parameters of the dynamical theories of the main Uranus satellites.

Ground-based observations of faint satellites nearby their planets with 1–2 m class telescopes usually do not allow for high quality astrometry and photometry, due to saturation by the primary or to poor S/N ratio on the satellite images, generally embedded on the scattered light of the planet. Earth-based observations of the Uranus satellites’ upcoming mutual events in 2007–2008 are no exception. In most cases, the event will take place at 4 arcs or less from the planet, with “planet minus satellite” brightness differences of 10 magnitudes. So as to make feasible the observations of these important phenomena, we have developed a prototype of a coronagraph of simple design making use of good quality commercial optical systems. Pilot tests made with this coronagraph with a telescope of D = 1.6 m show that it is possible to obtain S/N ratios of 50 or higher for 10 s exposures, for satellites as close as 2 Uranus radii from the planet center. We have also developed numerical algorithms which perform digital coronagraphy in the images, with the elimination of the influence of the planets’ scattered light. This procedure considerably improves the S/N ratio of the satellite images (with or without a coronagraph instrument) and shall be applied in the reduction of the observations of the Uranus events so as to achieve the highest possible photometric and astrometric quality.
