Abstract

We present a measurement of the slope parameter α for the η → 3 π 0 decay, with the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory, based on a background free sample of ∼17 million η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. By fitting the event density in the Dalitz plot we determine α = − 0.0301 ± 0.0035 stat − 0.0035 + 0.0022 syst . The result is in agreement with recent measurements from hadro- and photo-production experiments.

Abstract

We have searched for the decay ϕ → K 0 K ¯ 0 γ , by detecting K S pairs plus a photon and with the K S -mesons decaying to π + π − , in a sample of about 1.5 × 10 9 ϕ-decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE. The reaction proceeds through the intermediate states f 0 ( 980 ) γ , a 0 ( 980 ) γ . We find five events with 3.2 events expected from background processes. We obtain the upper limit: BR ( ϕ → K 0 K ¯ 0 γ ) 1.9 × 10 − 8 at 90% CL.

Abstract

We have studied the η → π + π − e + e − ( γ ) decay using about 1.7 fb − 1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ -factory. This corresponds to about 72 millions η mesons produced in ϕ radiative decays. We have measured the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative effects, with 4% accuracy: BR ( η → π + π − e + e − ( γ ) ) = ( 26.8 ± 0.9 Stat . ± 0.7 Syst . ) × 10 − 5 . We have obtained the first measurement of the CP-odd ππ – ee decay planes angular asymmetry, A ϕ = ( − 0.6 ± 2.5 Stat . ± 1.8 Syst . ) × 10 − 2 .

Abstract

We present the result of a direct search for the decay K S → e + e − , obtained with a sample of e + e − → ϕ → K S K L events produced at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−1. The search has been performed using a pure K S beam tagged by the simultaneous detection of a K L interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kinematic and particle identification cuts. We find BR ( K S → e + e − ) 9 × 10 − 9 at 90% CL, which improves by an order of magnitude on the previous best limit.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section σ ( e + e − → π + π − γ ( γ ) ) at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, using events with initial state radiation photons emitted at small angle and inclusive of final state radiation. We present the analysis of a new data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 240 pb−1. We have achieved a reduced systematic uncertainty with respect to previously published KLOE results. From the cross section we obtain the pion form factor and the contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly from two-pion states in the mass range 0.592 M π π 0.975 GeV . For the latter we find Δ π π a μ = ( 387.2 ± 0.5 stat ± 2.4 exp ± 2.3 th ) × 10 −10 .

Abstract

We have studied the e + e − → ω π 0 cross section in the s interval 1000–1030 MeV using the π + π − π 0 π 0 and π 0 π 0 γ final states with a sample of ∼ 600 pb −1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. By fitting the observed interference pattern around M ϕ for both final states, we extract the ratio of the decay widths Γ ( ω → π 0 γ ) / Γ ( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.0897 ± 0.0016 and derive the branching fractions BR ( ω → π + π − π 0 ) = ( 90.24 ± 0.19 ) % , BR ( ω → π 0 γ ) = ( 8.09 ± 0.14 ) % . The parameters describing the e + e − → π + π − π 0 π 0 reaction around M ϕ are also used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating ϕ → ω π 0 decay: BR ( ϕ → ω π 0 ) = ( 4.4 ± 0.6 ) × 10 −5 .

Abstract

Neutral kaons provide one of the systems most sensitive to quantum mechanics and CPT violation. Models predicting quantum mechanics violation, also related to CPT violation, have been tested at the CPLEAR and KLOE experiments. In this report results of CPLEAR obtained by studying the time evolution of single and two entangled kaons are reviewed. New or improved limits on decoherence and CPT violation parameters have been obtained by KLOE studying the quantum interference in the channel ϕ → K S K L → π + π − π + π − . No deviations from the expectations of quantum mechanics and CPT symmetry have been observed.

Abstract

We present the first observation of quantum interference in the process ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π+π−, using the KLOE detector at the Frascati e+e− collider DAΦNE. From about 5×104 neutral kaon pairs both decaying to π+π− pairs we obtain the distribution of Δt, the difference between the two kaon decay times, which allows testing the validity of quantum mechanics and CPT invariance: no violation of either is observed. New or improved limits on coherence loss and CPT violation are presented.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the K–π vector current form-factor parameters for the decay K L → π ± e ∓ ν . We use 328 pb−1 of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to ∼2 million K e 3 events. Measurements of semileptonic form factors provide information about the dynamics of the strong interaction and are necessary for evaluation of the phase-space integral I K e needed to measure the CKM matrix element | V u s | for K L → π ± e ∓ ν decays. Our result is λ + = ( 28.6 ± 0.5 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −3 for a linear fit, and λ + ′ = ( 25.5 ± 1.5 ± 1.0 ) × 10 −3 , λ + ″ = ( 1.4 ± 0.7 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −3 for a quadratic fit.

Abstract

Among some 400 million K S K L pairs produced in e + e − annihilations at DAΦNE, ∼6500 each of K S → π + e − ν ¯ and K S → π − e + ν decays have been observed with the KLOE detector. From these, the ratio Γ ( K S → π e ν ) / Γ ( K S → π + π − ) = ( 10.19 ± 0.13 ) × 10 −4 is obtained, improving the accuracy on BR ( K S → π e ν ) by a factor of four and providing the most precise test of the Δ S = Δ Q rule. From the partial width Γ ( K S → π e ν ) , a value for f + K 0 ( 0 ) × V u s is obtained that is in agreement with unitarity of the quark-mixing matrix. The lepton charge asymmetry A S = ( 1.5 ± 9.6 stat ± 2.9 syst ) × 10 −3 is compatible with the requirements of CPT invariance. The form-factor slope agrees with recent results from semileptonic K L and K + decays. These are the first measurements of the charge asymmetry and form-factor slope for semileptonic K S decays.

Abstract

We measured, with the KLOE detector, the spectrum of π + π − invariant mass in a sample of 6.7 × 10 5 e + e − → π + π − γ events with the photon at large polar angle ( θ γ > 45 ° ) at a centre of mass energy s around the ϕ mass. We observe in this spectrum a clear contribution from the intermediate process ϕ → f 0 ( 980 ) γ . A sizeable effect is also observed in the distribution of the pion forward–backward asymmetry. We use different theoretical models to fit the spectrum and we determine the f0 mass and coupling constants to the ϕ, to π + π − and to K K ¯ .

Abstract

We have searched for the decay K S → 3 π 0 with the KLOE experiment at DA Φ NE using data from e + e − collisions at a center of mass energy W ∼ m ϕ c 2 for an integrated luminosity L = 450 pb −1 . The search has been performed with a pure K S beam obtained by tagging with K L interactions in the calorimeter and detecting six photons. We find an upper limit for the branching ratio of 1.2 × 10 −7 at 90% C.L.

Abstract

We have searched with the KLOE detector for the P and CP violating decay eta --> pi(+)pi(-) in a sample of 1.55 x 10(7) eta's from the decay phi --> etagamma of phi-mesons produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations at DAPhiNE. Abstract

We have measured the absolute branching ratio BR ( K ± → π ± π 0 π 0 ) with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e + e − collider. We collected ∼ 3.3 × 10 7 tagged charged kaons, from the reaction e + e − → ϕ → K + K − . We find BR ( K ± → π ± π 0 π 0 ) = ( 1.763 ± 0.013 stat ± 0.022 syst ) × 10 − 2 .

Abstract

We have measured the ratio R = Γ ( K L → γγ )/ Γ ( K L → π 0 π 0 π 0 ) using the KLOE detector. From a sample of ∼10 9 φ -mesons produced at DAΦNE, the Frascati φ -factory, we select ∼1.6×10 8 K L -mesons tagged by observing K S → π + π − following the reaction e + e − → φ → K L K S . From this sample we select 27,375 K L → γγ events and obtain R =(2.79±0.02 stat ±0.02 syst )×10 −3 . Using the world average value for BR( K L → π 0 π 0 π 0 ), we obtain BR( K L → γγ )=(5.89±0.07±0.08)×10 −4 where the second error is due to the uncertainty on the π 0 π 0 π 0 branching fraction.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching ratio BR(KS --> pi e nu) performed using the KLOE detector. KS mesons are produced in the reaction e+ e- --> phi --> KS KL at the DAFNE collider. In a sample of about 5 million KS-tagged events we find 624 +- 30 semileptonic KS decays. Normalizing to the KS --> pi+ pi- count in the same data sample, we obtain BR(KS --> pi e nu) = (6.91 +- 0.37) 10^-4, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation., Comment: 9 pages, 5 Encapsulated Postscript figures. DAΦNE, the Frascati φ-factory, at present under commissioning, will produce large numbers of K -meson pairs in a pure quantum states. Such kaons are invaluable for the study of CP violation, an outstanding problem in particle physics for the last thirty years. The KLOE detector, soon to be completed, has as its main missions the study of the CP and CPT symmetries plus a whole spectrum of other physics obtainable from the collected data.

Abstract

The KLOE experiment at DA/spl Phi/NE is largely devoted to the study of discrete symmetries in the K/sub S/K/sub L/ system. During 2001-2002, KLOE collected 1.4 /spl times/ 10/sup 9/ /spl phi/ decays, for a total data volume of nearly 200 TB. We describe the KLOE computing environment, outlining our solutions to issues of calibration, reconstruction, data reduction, and data access for analysis. We discuss the performance of the system, with particular emphasis on the data-processing and transfer rates, and also describe the generation of large Monte Carlo samples. The KLOE computing environment has been been demonstrated to be flexible and scalable in the presence of rapidly evolving data-taking conditions.

Abstract

The KLOE detector is presently under construction at DAΦNE, the Frascati φ-factory, with the aim of studying CP violation in the K 0 K 0 system. At the design luminosity L=1033cm−2s−1 about 5 × 1010 φ-decays will be detected per year: this will be a unique possibility to study in detail the radiative δ decays into scalar mesons φ → (f0, a0)γ, thus helping in establishing the nature of these mesons which is still under debate [1].

Abstract

The main aim of the KLOE experiment at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory, is to study CP violation in the K-0-(K-0) over bar system. Requirements on electromagnetic shower detection, in the 20-280 MeV/c range, are very stringent. A hermetic, lead-scintillating fiber sampling calorimeter, characterized by a fiber:lead:glue volume ratio of approximately 48:42:10, has been chosen. Energy resolution of sigma(E)/E similar to 4.7%/root E(GeV) and time resolution of sigma(T) similar to 58 ps/root E(GeV) are the most significant characteristics of this detector.

Abstract

In connection with the design of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the KLOE detector, we have studied the performance of several samples of commercially available plastic scintillating fibers with a particle beam at the CERN PS. Results on light yield, attenuation length and time resolution measurements concerning 2–4.5 m long samples of those fibers are presented.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the inclusive muon and {ital b}-quark production cross sections in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The inclusive muon spectrum extends over the kinematic range {vert_bar}{ital y}{sup {mu}}{vert_bar}{lt}0.8 and 3.5{lt}{ital p}{sub {ital T}}{sup {mu}}{lt}60GeV/{ital c}, and is well described by the expected contributions from various known sources. The {ital b}-quark production cross section for {vert_bar}{ital y}{sup {ital b}}{vert_bar}{lt}1.0 and {ital p}{sup {ital b}}{sub {ital T}}{gt}6GeV/{ital c} is extracted, and agrees with next-to-leading order QCD predictions within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Abstract

We present new results on the search for the top quark in p anti-p collisions at S**(1/2) = 1.8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 13.5 +- 1.6 pb**(-1). We have considered t anti-t production in the Standard Model using electron and muon dilepton decay channels (t anti-t -> e mu + jets, e e + jets, and mu mu + jets) and single-lepton decay channels (t anti-t -> e + jets and mu + jets) with and without tagging of b quark jets. From all channels, we have 9 events with an expected background of 3.8 +- 0.9. If we assume that the excess is due to t anti-t production, and assuming a top mass of 180 GeV/c**2, we obtain a cross section of 8.2 +- 5.1 pb.

Abstract

With the CUSB-II detector at CESR we have studied the processes γ (3S) → γ (1S) π + γ − and γ (3S) → γ (2S) π + π − , where the final state γ (1S or 2S) decays into a pair of leptons. We have found 451 γ (3S) → γ (1S) π + π − events and 138 γ (3S) → γ (2S) π + π − events. The corresponding branching ratios are (4.46 ± 0.34 ± 0.50)% and (4.82 ± 0.65 ± 0.53) % respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the π + π − system have been studied and compared with several models.

Abstract

We describe the results of beam tests of three uranium-liquid argon calorimeter modules constructed for the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. As part of the calibration procedure, these modules were exposed to beams of electrons, pions and muons between 10 and 150 GeV/c before their installation in the end calorimeter of the completed DO detector. We obtain an electromagnetic sampling resolution of 15.7%/√E and constant term of 0.3%. The hadronic sampling resolution is 45%/√E (degraded to 50%/√E by the effects of upstream material) and the constant term is 4%. The calorimeter is linear to 0.5%, and the electromagnetic to hadronic response ratio is between 1.02 and 1.09 over this range of momenta. For an electron efficiency of 95% we obtain a rejection factor against pions of ∼ 900-3000 for particles in the momentum range between 50 and 150 GeV/c. We also compare our results with the predictions of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

Investigation at a $\phi$--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta$^\prime$ mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. Abstract

Using the CUSB-II detector at CESR we have observed electric dipole transitions between the {Upsilon} and {chi}{sub {ital b}} states, both in exclusive and inclusive channels. We have measured their branching ratios and find {ital B}({Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{chi}{sub {ital b}}(2{ital P}{sub 2,1,0}){gamma})=(11.1{plus minus}0.5{plus minus}0.4)%, (11.5{plus minus}0.5{plus minus}0.5)%, (6.0{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.6)%. We have measured the center of gravity of the {chi}{sub {ital b}}(2{ital P}) states to be (10259.5{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}1.0) MeV and their fine-structure mass splittings to be (13.5{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.5) MeV between the {ital J}=2 and {ital J}=1 states and (23.5{plus minus}0.7{plus minus}0.7) MeV between {ital J}=1 and {ital J}=0, leading to a fine-structure ratio of 0.574{plus minus}0.024{plus minus}0.02. The measured fine-structure splitting implies that the spin-orbit interaction dominates over the tensor interaction and that the long-range confining potential is due to an effective scalar exchange. From the measured branching ratios we infer the hadronic widths of the {chi}{sub {ital b}}(2{ital P}) states and find them to be consistent with QCD predictions. We use them to derive values of {alpha}{sub {ital s}}. We have observed the suppressed transition {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{chi}{sub {ital b}}(1{ital P}){gamma} and the {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} transitions from the {Upsilon}(3{ital S}). We find {ital B}({Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{Upsilon}(1{italmore » S}){pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0})=(2.2{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.3)% and {ital B}({Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{Upsilon}(2{ital S}){pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0})=(1.7{plus minus}0.5{plus minus}0.2)%. We also present a measurement of the dipion invariant-mass spectrum from the transition {Upsilon}(3{ital S}){r arrow}{Upsilon}(1{ital S}){pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}.« less

Abstract

We present a complete study of the physical processes contributing to the photon spectrum between 20 and 100 MeV in the reaction e+e− → π+π−γ at the φ peak, which is of relevance to the study of φ→f0γ→π+π−γ. Continuum contributions can be suppressed by suitable angular cuts. We show that, because of the presence of interference terms, we can determine the sign of the φf0γ coupling even for the smallest branching ratio expected for φ→f0γ, and thus obtain a new piece of information on the nature of the f0.

Abstract

The KLOE experiment uses a fine sampling lead-scintillating fibre calorimeter to measure energy, time and position of neutral and charged particles. The overall detector consists of 88 modules organised in a barrel and two end-caps, for a total granularity of 2440 cells, read-out by photo-multipliers at both fibre ends. The chosen design of a high sampling fraction with the usage of thin lead layers and fast scintillating fibres allows to reach good efficiency for photon energies down to few MeV, good energy resolution and excellent time resolution. The design, calibration and performances of the calorimeter on efficiency, time/position/energy resolution and particle identification is reviewed. Abstract

Using the CUSB-II detector at CESR we have measured the B ∗ cross section in the energy range from s = 10.61–10.65 GeV and 10.70 GeV to be 0.16±0.03 nb and 0.33±0.13 nb respectively. The photon energy for B ∗ →Bγ decays is measured to be 45.4±0.8 MeV, in agreement with our earlier determination. The implication of this measurement for future B factories is discussed.

Abstract

Using the CUSB-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made precision measurements of the electric dipole transition rates from Y« to χ' b , which are in excellent agreement with theory. The fine-structure splitting is found to be M(χ' b2 )-M(χ' bl )=13.5±0.4±0.5 MeV and M(χ' bl )-M(χ' bo )=23.2 ± 0.7 ± 0.7 MeV, leading to a ratio R=0.584 ± 0.024 ± 0.02. The fine structure measures the relative contributions of the spin-orbit interaction a=9.5±0.2±0.1MeV and tensor interactionb=2.3±0.1±0.1 MeV

Abstract

{ital B}-meson semileptonic decay spectra have been obtained at the {Upsilon}(4{ital S}) and at the {Upsilon}(5{ital S}) at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring with the Columbia University--Stony Brook detector. The branching ratio for {ital B}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu}{ital X} at the {Upsilon}(4{ital S}) is found to be (10.0{plus minus}0.5)%. The electron spectrum of {ital B}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu}{ital X} at the {Upsilon}(5{ital S}) is observed for the first time and the average branching ratio of {ital B},{ital B}{sub {ital s}}{r arrow}{ital e}{nu}{ital X} is consistent with that for {ital B}'s from {Upsilon}(4{ital S}) decays. The shape of the electron spectrum at the {Upsilon}(5{ital S}) indicates production of {ital B} mesons which are heavier than nonstrange {ital B}'s, presumably strange {ital B}'s.

Abstract

We have studied the decay chain {Upsilon}{prime}{prime}{r arrow}{chi}{sub {ital b}}{sup {prime}}({chi}{sub {ital b}}){gamma} {r arrow}{Upsilon}{prime}({Upsilon}){gamma}{gamma}{r arrow}{mu}{mu}({ital ee}){gamma}{gamma} with the CUSB II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. For a sample of 1.33{times}10{sup 6} {Upsilon}{prime}{prime}'s we find {approx}400 events. We measure branching ratios for {chi}{sub {ital b}{ital J}}{sup {prime}}{r arrow}{Upsilon}{prime}({Upsilon}){gamma} and, using calculated {ital E}1 rates, we derive total and hadronic widths of the {chi}{sub {ital b}}{sup {prime}} states. From these widths we obtain values of {alpha}{sub {ital s}} in the range between 0.13 and 0.21, in agreement with other determinations. We observe the suppressed decay {Upsilon}{prime}{prime}{r arrow}{chi}{sub {ital b}}{gamma}. The measured branching ratio suggests that relativistic effects are important. We also determine the branching ratios for {Upsilon}{prime}{prime}{r arrow}{Upsilon}{prime}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} to be (1.3{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.2)% and {Upsilon}{prime}{prime}{r arrow}{Upsilon}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} to be (1.8{plus minus}0.3{plus minus}0.2)%.

Abstract

Using the Columbia University--Stony Brook (CUSB-II) detector we have studied the inclusive photon spectrum from 2.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{4}$ \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(5S) decays. We observe a strong signal due to ${\mathit{B}}^{\mathrm{*}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B\ensuremath{\gamma} decays. From this we obtain (i) the average ${\mathit{B}}^{\mathrm{*}}$-B mass difference, 46.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4 MeV, (ii) the photon yield per \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(5S) decay, 〈\ensuremath{\gamma}/\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(5S)〉=1.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06, and (iii) the average velocity of the ${\mathit{B}}^{\mathrm{*}}$'s, 〈\ensuremath{\beta}〉=0.156\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010, for a mix of nonstrange (B) and strange (${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}$) ${\mathit{B}}^{\mathrm{*}}$ mesons from \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(5S) decays. From the shape of the photon line, we find that both B and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}$ mesons are produced with nearly equal values for the hyperfine splitting of the B and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{s}}$ meson systems.

Abstract

We have searched for photon signals in {Upsilon}(4{ital S}) decays, indicative of large decay rates involving annihilation of the {ital b{bar b}} pair rather than decays to {ital B{bar B}} meson pairs. We do not observe any evidence for such signals. We also obtain a model-independent upper limit of (4.5--6.0)% for the branching ratio of {Upsilon}(4{ital S}){r arrow}{ital ggX}, for 0{lt}{ital M}({ital X}){lt}1.2 GeV, at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the KL lifetime using the KLOE detector. From a sample of 4 x 10^8 KS KL pairs following the reaction e+ e- -> phi -> KS KL we select 15 x 10^6 KL -> p0 p0 p0 decays tagged by KS -> pi+ pi- events. From a fit of the proper time distribution we find tau_L = (50.92 +- 0.17{stat} +- 0.25{syst})$ ns. This is the most precise measurement of the KL lifetime performed to date., 14 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

The Data Acquisition system for the KLOE experiment, presently running at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati DAΦNE collider, has been designed to sustain an acquisition throughput of 50 Mbyte / s for an event rate of 10 kHz . Its two major components are the front end data readout, based on custom buses, and a complex network of computers and storage devices hosting a set of distributed processes. The end result is a seamless data transport from the readout system to the storage library, accompanied by concurrent on line calibrations and data quality control.
