Abstract

We introduce LightOn's Optical Processing Unit (OPU), the first photonic AI accelerator chip available on the market for at-scale Non von Neumann computations, reaching 1500 TeraOPS. It relies on a combination of free-space optics with off-the-shelf components, together with a software API allowing a seamless integration within Python-based processing pipelines. Abstract

This work falls within the general framework of melted polymers flows characterization. It deals with the development of a thermo-rheological Reduced Order Model (ROM) which could be used in future works for on-line estimation of viscosity from temperature measurements in the flow, especially in high shear zones. A steady incompressible flow of a pseudo-plastic fluid in a circular runner is considered. The dynamic viscosity is thus described by a shear rate power law defined by consistency index K and flow behavior index n. An approach is developed for building a ROM able to compute a radial temperature profile at the channel outlet for any (K, n) couple in a predefined range. Assuming the temperature field approximation on a reduced set of m space functions, the general form of the ROM is obtained through a Galerkin projection of the energy equation. The ROM constitutive parameters are then identified through an optimization procedure using temperature data for a set of (K, n) couples in the construction ranges K ϵ [ 5000 ; 20 , 000 ] and n ϵ [ 0.3 ; 0.6 ] . These data are computed by a Finite Elements reference model experimentally validated on an instrumented apparatus. A series of ROMs of order m = 1 to 5 is identified and then tested for a second set of (K, n) couples. The order 5 ROM is able to reproduce the temperature profile computed by the reference model with a r.m.s. error of about 10−2 °C. The temperature profile computed with ROMs is also compared to the profile measured for a real flow.

Abstract

In this work, the thermal behavior of an elastomer flow all along a cylindrical runner placed at the outlet of an extruder is studied. A cylindrical runner thermally regulated and highly instrumented was designed. It is equipped with a new intrusive thermal sensor, developed in the lab and named thermal measurement cell (TMC). This device is used to measure temperature profiles at the inlet and the outlet of the flow. Several experiments are performed with an elastomer by varying the rotation speed of the screw. Experiments first show the influence of viscous dissipation on the thermal behavior of such a highly viscous flow. Then, the results are used to estimate the viscosity by taking into account the temperature profile of the flow. The comparison of the estimated viscosity with the viscosity measured in a capillary rheometer shows the importance to introduce a correction in rheometric characterization and to consider a non-isothermal behavior of the flow. Experimental results are also compared with model predictions. The model is then used to perform a sensitivity analysis. The influence of the correction on the viscosity and the impact of viscous dissipation on the thermal behavior prediction of the elastomer flow are discussed.

Les systèmes qui nous entourent, de notre lave-linge aux transports en commun, partagent des données pour améliorer notre quotidien. Le monde de l'Internet des objets (Internet of Things en anglais ou IoT) est en marche! Mais comment fonctionnent ces objets connectés? Comment partagent-ils des informations? Quels réseaux exploitent-ils? Avec juste quelques connaissances de base en programmation, cet ouvrage très illustré vous initiera au monde de l'IoT à travers la réalisation de plusieurs objets connectés (une lampe, un thermomètre, un robot). Une carte ludique pour apprendre à programmer Deux fois plus petite qu'une carte de crédit et coûtant moins de 20€, la carte micro:bit est un nano-ordinateur lancé en 2016 au Royaume- Uni par la BBC pour initier les collégiens au codage et au pilotage de systèmes numériques. Pouvant être programmée depuis un PC, un smartphone, une tablette ou encore un Raspberry Pi, cette carte est compacte, robuste, simple d'utilisation, facile à connecter, fédérant une communauté très importante et s'accompagnant d'un grand nombre d'extensions. Pour la piloter, plusieurs langages de programmation sont disponibles : Python, JavaScript, MakeCode... Cet ouvrage se concentre sur la programmation de la carte micro:bit avec Python, le langage officiel pour l'enseignement de l'informatique au lycée. Ne nécessitant aucune compétence particulière en codage, il est organisé en trois parties. La première pose les bases du langage Python (variables, boucles, fonctions...), la deuxième regroupe différentes applications concrètes et facilement réalisables avec la carte micro:bit, et la troisième présente des projets plus complexes faisant appel aux extensions de la carte. Abstract

We explore different methods of analyzing large and complex datasets related to building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). We use the data of the European RESSOURCES project obtained from ETNA, an experimental setup consisting of two full-scale replicas of residential homes featuring a double-skin facade. We show that classic data mining methods such as mutual information can be used to gain a better understanding of the physics behind BIPV systems and to highlight discrepancies between different experimental setups. We then use artificial neural networks to model the airflow inside a double-skin facade and quantify its contribution to the cooling and heating of buildings.

Abstract

During the recycling of polypropylene (PP), some pollutants are likely to be present in the polymer. Most of these pollutants are polyethylene (PE) which tends to form a heterogeneous blend with PP due to their incompatible nature. In the present study, PP and PE were extruded with different volume fractions of PE. The pressure drop and the temperature variation within the flow in a cylindrical die were studied. A finite element model was used in order to predict the rheological behaviors of the studied polymer mixture ratios. The results obtained in this work show that the rheological response of the blend is very sensitive to the viscosity of the minor polymer when it is lower than the viscosity of the major polymer.

Abstract

The thermal and kinetic behaviour of an elastomer flow inside an extrusion die is numerically investigated. The aim is to control scorch arisen and reduce the heating time in the mould by using viscous dissipation phenomena in order to improve the rubber compound curing efficiency. A three dimensional model, using the particle tracking technique, is developed in order to get thermal, velocity and kinetic fields through the flow. Three common geometries of an elastomer forming process are modeled: a straight runner, a bend zone and a bifurcation. This simulation is applied on the case of an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) flow. The thermal and rheological properties are experimentally characterized. The influence of viscous dissipation on the reaction progress of the melt is studied on several process conditions. Many criterions relevant for thermal and cure homogeneity are proposed in order to quantify the performance of geometry modifications.

Abstract

This paper reports and discusses the thermal and kinetic behaviour of elastomer flow inside an extrusion die. The reaction progress through the runner was modeled by using a particle tracking technique. The aim is to analyze viscous dissipation phenomena to control scorch arisen, improve the rubber compound curing homogeneity and reduce the heating time in the mould using the progress of the induction time. The heat and momentum equations were solved in three dimensions with Ansys Polyflow. A particle tracking technique was set up to calculate the reaction progress. Several simulations were performed to highlight the influence of process parameters and geometry modifications on the rubber compound thermal and cure homogeneity.
