Abstract

Abstract Molten silicates at depth are crucial for planetary evolution, yet their local structure and physical properties under extreme conditions remain elusive due to experimental challenges. In this study, we utilize in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) end-station of the Linear Coherent Linac Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to investigate liquid silicates. Using an ultrabright X-ray source and a high-power optical laser, we probed the local atomic arrangement of shock-compressed liquid (Mg,Fe)SiO3 with varying Fe content, at pressures from 81(9) to 385(40) GPa. We compared these findings to ab initio molecular dynamics simulations under similar conditions. Results indicate continuous densification of the O-O and Mg-Si networks beyond Earth’s interior pressure range, potentially altering melt properties at extreme conditions. This could have significant implications for early planetary evolution, leading to notable differences in differentiation processes between smaller rocky planets, such as Earth and Venus, and super-Earths, which are exoplanets with masses nearly three times that of Earth.

Abstract

Abstract Seismic anisotropy is a powerful tool to map deformation processes in the deep Earth. Below 660 km, however, observations are scarce and conflicting. In addition, the underlying crystal scale mechanisms, leading to microstructures and crystal orientations, remain poorly constrained. Here, we use multigrain X‐ray diffraction in the laser‐heated diamond anvil cell to investigate the orientations of hundreds of grains in pyrolite, a model composition of the Earth's mantle, at in situ pressure and temperature. Bridgmanite in pyrolite exhibits three regimes of microstructures, due to transformation and deformation at low and high pressure. These microstructures result in predictions of 1.5%–2% shear wave splitting between 660 and 2,000 km with reversals in fast S‐wave polarization direction at about 1,300 km depth. Anisotropy can develop in pyrolite at lower mantle conditions, but pressure has a significant impact on the plastic behavior of bridgmanite, and hence seismic observations, which may explain conflicting anisotropy observations.

Abstract

High-pressure (>1 GPa) torsion apparatus can be coupled with in situ X-ray tomography (XRT) to study microstructures in materials associated with large shear strains. Here, deformation experiments were carried out on multi-phase aggregates at ∼3–5 GPa and ∼300–500°C, using a rotational tomography Paris–Edinburgh press (RoToPEc) with in situ absorption contrast XRT on the PSICHE beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL. The actual shear strain reached in the samples was quantified with respect to the anvil twisting angles, which is γ ≤ 1 at 90° anvil twist and reaches γ ≃ 5 at 225° anvil twist. 2D and 3D quantifications based on XRT that can be used to study in situ the deformation microfabrics of two-phase aggregates at high shear strain are explored. The current limitations for investigation in real time of deformation microstructures using coupled synchrotron XRT with the RoToPEc are outlined.

Abstract

Abstract Wadsleyite is the dominant mineral of the upper portion of the Earth's mantle transition zone (MTZ). As such, understanding plastic deformation of wadsleyite is relevant for the interpretation of observations of seismic signals from this region in terms of mantle flow. Despite its relevance, however, the deformation mechanisms of wadsleyite and their effects on microstructures and anisotropy are still poorly understood. Here, we present the results of new deformation experiments on polycrystalline wadsleyite at temperatures of 1400–1770 K and pressures between 12.3 and 20.3 GPa in the laser‐heated diamond anvil cell. We rely on multigrain X‐ray crystallography to follow the evolution of individual grain orientations and extract lattice preferred orientations at the sample scale at different steps of the experiments. A comparison of experimental results of our work and the literature with polycrystal plasticity simulations, indicates that 〈111〉{101} is the most active slip system of dislocations in wadsleyite at all investigated conditions. Secondary slip systems such as [001](010), [100](001), and [100]{0kl}, however, play a critical role in the resulting microstructures and their activity depends on both temperature and water content, from which we extract an updated deformation map of wadsleyite at MTZ conditions. Lastly, we propose several seismic anisotropy models of the upper part of the MTZ, depending on temperature, geophysical context, and levels of hydration that will be useful for the interpretation of seismic signals from the MTZ in terms of mantle flow and water content.

Abstract

Abstract The coesite‐stishovite phase transition is considered the most plausible candidate to explain the X‐discontinuity observed at around 300 km depth in a variety of tectonic settings. Here, we investigate the microstructure in SiO2 across the coesite‐stishovite transition in uniaxial compression experiments. We apply the multigrain crystallography technique (MGC) in a laser‐heated diamond‐anvil cell (LH‐DAC) to identify the seismic signature of the transition and the amount of SiO2 in the mantle. While coesite displays weak lattice‐preferred orientations (LPO) before the transition, stishovite develops strong LPO characterized by the alignment of [112] axes parallel to the compression direction. However, LPO has little effect on the impedance contrast across the transition, which is up to 8.8% for S‐waves in a mid‐ocean ridge basalt (MORB) composition at 300 km depth along a normal mantle geotherm, 10 GPa‐1700 K. Therefore, 10–50 vol.% of a MORB component, corresponding to 0.6–3.2 vol.% SiO2, mechanically mixed with the pyrolytic mantle would be required to explain the range of impedance (and velocity) contrasts observed for the X‐discontinuity. Based on the reflection coefficients computed for the coesite‐stishovite transition, we show that the incidence angle or epicentral distance is critical for the detection of silica‐containing lithologies in the upper mantle, with highest detection probabilities for small incidence angles. The intermittent visibility of the X‐discontinuity may thus be explained by the seismic detectability of the coesite‐stishovite transition rather than by absence of the transition or chemical heterogeneities in some specific tectonic settings.

Abstract

Dehydration and fluid circulation are integral parts of subduction tectonics that govern the dynamics of the wedge mantle. The knowledge of the elastic behavior of aqueous fluid is crucial to understand the fluid–rock interactions in the mantle through velocity profiles. In this study, we investigated the elastic wave velocities of chlorite at high pressure beyond its dehydrating temperature, simulating the progressive dehydration of hydrous minerals in subduction zones. The dehydration resulted in an 8% increase in compressional (Vp) and a 5% decrease in shear wave (Vs) velocities at 950 K. The increase in Vp can be attributed to the stiffening of the sample due to the formation of secondary mineral phases followed by the dehydration of chlorite. The fluid-bearing samples exhibited Vp/Vs of 2.45 at 950 K. These seismic parameters are notably different from the major mantle minerals or hydrous silicate melts and provide unique seismic criteria for detecting mantle fluids through seismic tomography.

Abstract

Sound velocity and equation of state of liquids provide important constraints on the generation, presence, and transport of silicate and metallic melts in the Earth’s interior. Unlike their solid counterparts, these properties of liquids pose great technical challenges to high-pressure measurements and are poorly constrained. Here we present the technical developments that have been made at the GSECARS beamline 13-ID-D of the Advanced Photon Source for the past several years for determination of sound velocity of liquids using the ultrasonic techniques in a 1000-ton Kawai-type multianvil apparatus. Temperature of the sound velocity measurements has been extended to ~2400 K at 4 GPa and ~2000 K at 8 GPa to enable studies of liquids with very high melting temperatures, such as the silicate liquids.

Earth and planetary science letters 604, 118015 (2023). doi:10.1016/j.epsl.2023.118015, The ‘660’ discontinuity is often associated with a phase transitions in pyrolite at about 24 GPa. There are ubiquitous reports of seismic anisotropy below the ‘660’ which are difficult to explain from a mineralogical point of view. In this study, we implement multigrain crystallography X-ray diffraction in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell in order to track microstructures induced by phase transitions at the pressure and temperature conditions of the discontinuity. Before the onset of transformation, garnet is isotropic with ringwoodite displaying a weak 001 texture. After the transformation, bridgmanite displays strong 001 transformation textures which we attribute to growth under stress. Davemaoite exhibits weak maxima in 101 and 111 orientations with ferropericlase displaying no texture. The results are used to model anisotropy in a subducting slab, with a prediction of no anisotropy above the ‘660’ and up to 1.28% (0.08 km/s) shear wave splitting below the ‘660’. Abstract

International audience; The seismic signature of the 410-km seismic discontinuity is generally attributed to the olivine to wadsleyite polymorphic transformation. However, apparent discrepancies exist between seismic and experimental observations. Among those, the sharpness of the discontinuity as inferred from the reflectivity of seismic waves is difficult to reconcile with the gradual nature of the olivine to wadsleyite transformation predicted by phase equilibria. In this study, we explore the contribution of the phase transition kinetics to the sharpness of the discontinuity by performing X-ray diffraction and sound velocity measurements on (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 with an unprecedented time resolution as a function of the reaction progress. Our data document for the first time a transient velocity softening phenomenon and attenuation which we relate to the formation of a metastable spineloid phase. In the Earth's mantle this transformation mechanism would affect the elastic gradient within the olivine-wadsleyite two-phase loop, potentially creating a low-velocity layer; hence explaining the unique sharpness and reflectivity of the discontinuity.

Abstract

Co-auteur étranger; International audience; Local structure and density of liquid Fe-S alloys at high pressure have been determined in situ by combined angle and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction experiments in a multi-anvil apparatus, covering a large temperature and compositional range. Precise density measurements collected for increasing temperature allowed us to directly derive the thermal expansion coefficients for liquid Fe-S alloys as a function of composition. In turn, thermal expansion has been used to refine thermodynamic models and to address the crystallization regime of telluric planetary cores by comparing the adiabatic temperature gradient and the slope of the liquidus in the Fe-FeS system.For Fe-S cores of asteroids and small planetesimals, top-down solidification is the dominant scenario as the compositional domain for which the slope of the liquidus is greater than the adiabatic gradient is limited to a narrow portion on the Fe-rich side. However, bottom-up growth of the inner core is expected for S-poor cases, with this compositional domain expanding to more S-rich compositions with increasing pressure (size of the planetary body). In particular, bottom-up crystallization cannot be excluded for the Moon and Ganymede.

Abstract

Journal of synchrotron radiation 28(3), 688 - 706 (2021). doi:10.1107/S1600577521002551, The high-precision X-ray diffraction setup for work with diamond anvil cells (DACs) in interaction chamber 2 (IC2) of the High Energy Density instrument of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser is described. This includes beamline optics, sample positioning and detector systems located in the multipurpose vacuum chamber. Concepts for pump–probe X-ray diffraction experiments in the DAC are described and their implementation demonstrated during the First User Community Assisted Commissioning experiment. X-ray heating and diffraction of Bi under pressure, obtained using 20 fs X-ray pulses at 17.8 keV and 2.2 MHz repetition, is illustrated through splitting of diffraction peaks, and interpreted employing finite element modeling of the sample chamber in the DAC., Published by Wiley-Blackwell, [S.l.]

Abstract

The journal of physical chemistry letters 12(12), 3246 - 3252 (2021). doi:10.1021/acs.jpclett.1c00150, The ultrafast synthesis of ε-Fe$_3$N$_{1+x}$ in a diamond-anvil cell (DAC) from Feand N$_2$ under pressure was observed using serial exposures of an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL). When the sample at 5 GPa was irradiated by a pulse train separated by 443 ns, the estimated sample temperature at the delay time was above 1400 K, confirmed by in situ transformation of $α$- to $γ$-iron. Ultimately, the Fe and N$_2$ reacted uniformly throughout the beam path to form Fe$_3$N$_{1.33}$, as deduced from its established equation of state (EOS). We thus demonstrate that the activation energy provided by intense X-ray exposures in an XFEL can be coupled with the source time structure to enable exploration of the time-dependence of reactions under high-pressure conditions., Published by ACS, Washington, DC

Abstract

co-auteur étranger; International audience; Previous modeling of carbonate subduction by high‐pressure experimentation has allowed to propose scenarios for bulk carbon return to the mantle, but the detailed transfer mechanisms have seldom been studied. We monitored carbonate – silicate reactions by combining high‐pressure experiments and synchrotron‐based x‐ray diffraction. Carbonates break down at moderate pressure and high temperature and CO2 is trapped at grain boundaries. Further isothermal compression yields melting, which may control continuous carbon introduction, first in the mantle wedge, and next, away from the wedge. Carbon presence has been discussed in a variety of magmatic contexts, under the oceanic lithosphere (hotspots, petit spots, fossil ridges). We suggest the presence of a global carbon‐rich layer under the oceanic lithosphere that is steadily fed by subduction processes. This layer can be the source of mechanical weakening of the lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary under the oceans. Abstract

Using in situ high pressure Raman spectroscopy, two structural changes were observed in a sample of the composition LiLa5O5(VO4)2. Taking this into account and by combining different conditions, three new compounds were further obtained from high pressure–high temperature synthesis. Their crystal structure description was done using the antiphase approach, which implies the presence of oxygen-centered [OLn4] building units, where Ln is La for (1) β-LiLa5O5(VO4)2 and (2) β-LiLa2O2(VO4) or Nd for (3) LiNd5O5(VO4)2 compounds. (1) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P[1 with combining macron] with unit cell parameters of a = 5.8167(15) Å, b = 12.2954(28) Å, c = 18.7221(69) Å, α = 102.03(2)°, β = 98.76(2)°, and γ = 103.54(2)°; a 3D structure was deduced from the ambient pressure polymorph. (2) also crystallizes in P[1 with combining macron] with a = 5.8144(7) Å, b = 5.8167(7) Å, c = 8.5272(1) Å, α = 98.184(7)°, β = 100.662(7)° and γ = 92.579(7)°. It shows a 2D structure with [La2O2]2+ layers surrounded by [LiO4] and [VO4] tetrahedra sharing corners and edges. (3) exhibits a 3D architecture isotypic with AP-LiLa5O5(VO4)2. The crucial role of high pressure in such types of synthesis and materials is also discussed. 49

Abstract

La mission MESSENGER a révélé que le champ magnétique de Mercure pouvait fonctionner depuis 3,7-3,9 Ga. Alors que le magnétisme intrinsèque suggère une dynamo active dans le noyau de Mercure, le mécanisme qui est responsable de maintenir la dynamo pendant une période de temps prolongée reste inconnu. Ici, nous avons étudié la conductivité électrique des alliages Fe ‐ S à une pression de 8 GPa et des températures jusqu'à 1700 K. Nous montrons que la conductivité électrique des alliages Fe ‐ S à 1500 K est d'environ 103 S / m, 2 ordres de grandeur inférieure à la valeur précédemment supposée pour les calculs de dynamo. La conductivité thermique a été estimée à l'aide de la loi de Wiedemann-Franz. La conductivité thermique totale du FeS est estimée à environ 4 Wm / K aux conditions aux limites du noyau mercurien-manteau. La faible conductivité thermique suggère qu'une dynamo à entraînement thermique fonctionnant au mercure est plus probable que prévu. S'il est couplé à des sources de flottabilité chimiques, il est possible de maintenir une dynamo intrinsèque pendant des échelles de temps compatibles avec les observations MESSENGER. The MESSENGER mission revealed that Mercury's magnetic field might have operated since 3.7–3.9 Ga. While the intrinsic magnetism suggests an active dynamo within Mercury's core, the mechanism that is responsible for sustaining the dynamo for prolonged period of time remains unknown. Here we investigated the electrical conductivity of Fe‐S alloys at pressure of 8 GPa and temperatures up to 1,700 K. We show that the electrical conductivity of Fe‐S alloys at 1,500 K is about 103 S/m, 2 orders of magnitude lower than the previously assumed value for dynamo calculations. The thermal conductivity was estimated using the Wiedemann‐Franz law. The total thermal conductivity of FeS is estimated to be ~4 Wm/K at the Mercurian core‐mantle boundary conditions. The low thermal conductivity suggests that a thermally driven dynamo operating on Mercury is more likely than expected. If coupled with chemical buoyancy sources, it is possible to sustain an intrinsic dynamo during time scales compatible with the MESSENGER observations. 124;9

Abstract

Co-auteur étranger; International audience; Comparison between geophysical observations and laboratory measurements yields contradicting estimations of the meltfraction for the partially molten regions of the Earth, highlighting potential disagreements between laboratory-based electricalconductivity and seismic wave velocity measurement techniques. In this study, we performed simultaneous acoustic wavevelocity and electrical conductivity measurements on a simplified partial melt analogue (olivine + mid oceanic ridge basalt,MORB) at 2.5 GPa and up to 1650 K. We aim to investigate the effect of ongoing textural modification of partially moltenperidotite analog on both electrical conductivity and sound wave velocity. Acoustic wave velocity (Vp and Vs) and EC aremeasured on an identical sample presenting the same melt texture, temperature gradient, stress field and chemical impurities.We observe a sharp decrease of acoustic wave velocities and increase of electrical conductivity in response to melting ofMORB component. At constant temperature of 1650 K, electrical conductivity gradually increases, whereas acoustic velocitiesremain relatively constant. While the total MORB components melt instantaneously above the melting temperature, themelt interconnectivity and the melt distribution should evolve with time, affecting the electrical conduction. Consequently,our experimental observations suggest that acoustic velocities respond spontaneously to the melt volume fraction for meltwith high wetting properties, whereas electrical conduction is significantly affected by subsequent melt texture modifications.We find that acoustic velocity measurements are thus better suited to the determination of the melt fraction of a partiallymolten sample at the laboratory time scale (~ h). Based on our estimations, the reduced Vs velocity in the major part of thelow velocity zone away from spreading ridges can be explained by 0.3–0.8 vol% volatile-bearing melt and the high Vp/Vsratio obtained for these melt fractions (1.82–1.87) are compatible with geophysical observations.

21. Elastic wave velocities in polycrystalline Mg3Al2Si3O12-pyrope garnet to 24 GPa and 1300 K

Abstract

The mantle transition zone, at depths between 410 to 660 km, is characterized by two prominent discontinuities in seismic-wave velocity in addition to a relatively steep velocity gradient. Throughout this region garnet will be an abundant mineral, the composition of which will change depending on both depth and lithology. It is important, therefore, to be able to characterize the effects of these changes on seismic velocities, which means that models must incorporate reliable elasticity data on the dominant mineral end-members that can be accurately employed at mantle conditions. In this study elastic wave velocities of synthetic polycrystalline pyrope garnet (Mg3Al2Si3O12) have been measured using ultrasonic interferometry combined with energy-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a 1000-ton multi-anvil press. Measurements were performed at pressures up to 24 GPa, conditions compatible with the base of the transition zone, and at temperatures up to 1300 K. Least-squares refinement of the ambient-temperature data to a third-order finite strain equation yields values for the bulk and shear moduli and their pressure derivatives of K S0 = 172.0 ±1.6 GPa, G = 89.1 ±0.5 GPa, δ K S / δ P = 4.38 ±0.08, and δ G/ δ P = 1.66 ±0.05. The determined temperature derivatives are δ K S/δ T = −17.8 ±2.0 MPa/K and δ G/ δ T = −7.9 ±1.0 MPa/K. High-temperature data were fitted to extract parameters for a thermodynamic model. As several high-pressure and -temperature studies have been performed on pyrope, fitting all of the available data provides a more robust assessment of the accuracy of velocity measurements and allows the uncertainties that are inherent in the various methodologies to be realized. When this model is used to determine pyrope velocities at transition zone conditions the propagated uncertainties are approximately 1.5 and 2.5% for v p and v s, respectively. To reduce these uncertainties it is important not only to measure velocities as close as possible to mantle temperatures but also to understand what causes the difference in velocities between studies. Pyrope v P and v S at mantle transition zone conditions are found to be approximately 2.4 and 3.7%, respectively, larger than recent determinations of majoritic garnet at the same conditions, implying a significant variation with chemistry that is mainly realized at high temperatures.

Abstract

The transition from the Archaean to the Proterozoic eon ended a period of great instability at the Earth’s surface. The origin of this transition could be a change in the dynamic regime of the Earth’s interior. Here we use laboratory experiments to investigate the solidus of samples representative of the Archaean upper mantle. Our two complementary in situ measurements of the melting curve reveal a solidus that is 200–250 K lower than previously reported at depths higher than about 100 km. Such a lower solidus temperature makes partial melting today easier than previously thought, particularly in the presence of volatiles (H2O and CO2). A lower solidus could also account for the early high production of melts such as komatiites. For an Archaean mantle that was 200–300 K hotter than today, significant melting is expected at depths from 100–150 km to more than 400 km. Thus, a persistent layer of melt may have existed in the Archaean upper mantle. This shell of molten material may have progressively disappeared because of secular cooling of the mantle. Crystallization would have increased the upper mantle viscosity and could have enhanced mechanical coupling between the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. Such a change might explain the transition from surface dynamics dominated by a stagnant lid on the early Earth to modern-like plate tectonics with deep slab subduction. A persistent melt layer may have existed in the Archaean upper mantle, according to experimental analyses. The melt layer could have decoupled the mantle from the overlying lithosphere, hindering plate tectonics.

Abstract

International audience; The eruption of calciocarbonatites at Earth’s surface is at odds with them being equilibrated with the mantle at depth because high-pressure experimental studies predict that significant magnesium contents should be expected. Here we report on new high-pressure experiments that demonstrate extreme calcium enrichment of carbonatites en route to the surface. We have monitored the decompression of partially molten carbonated peridotite using a multianvil apparatus coupled to synchrotron radiation. The experimental charge was molten at high pressure and high temperature, before being decompressed along a path that avoided the so-called “carbonate ledge” (a boundary that prevents carbonatitic melts from reaching the surface). Reaction with clinopyroxene yields calcium enrichment and magnesium depletion. The resulting Ca/(Ca + Mg) of the quenched melt reaches 0.95, which compares well with the composition of erupted calcic carbonatites [Ca/(Ca + Mg) ∼0.96–0.99] and of calcic melts trapped in mantle xenoliths from ocean islands [Ca/(Ca + Mg) ∼0.84–0.97]. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to bring carbonatites very close to the surface, without breakdown, and therefore without catastrophic CO2 release. Such occurrence appears to be favored by hot geotherms, meaning that higher temperatures tend to stabilize carbonatitic melts at shallow mantle pressure. Carbonatitic magmas are usually associated with low temperatures, because of the assumed low melting degree or low eruption temperature of the only active carbonatite volcano (i.e., Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania). Here we show that emplacement of carbonatites at or near the surface necessitates a hot environment.

Abstract

New experimental data are reported on high-pressure polymorphism of CaCO3. The CaCO3-III phase was stabilized using a large-volume press device and high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns were collected from a few mm3 of powder sample. The interpretation of XRPD indicates that CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb structures are present simultaneously and are in similar proportions. The lack of any unindexed peaks demonstrates that these two polymorphs are the only phases in this experiment, indicating that CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb are the structures most likely to occur above 2.5 GPa. Relevant co-axial crystallographic matrix transformations from lower-pressure polymorphs to both CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb are discussed to illustrate a further possible occurrence of co-existing and interspersed stable polymorphs in carbonate systems.

Abstract

Based on sound velocity measurements, upper mantle seismic anomalies could be explained by a melt fraction as low as 0.2%., The low-velocity zone (LVZ) is a persistent seismic feature in a broad range of geological contexts. It coincides in depth with the asthenosphere, a mantle region of lowered viscosity that may be essential to enabling plate motions. The LVZ has been proposed to originate from either partial melting or a change in the rheological properties of solid mantle minerals. The two scenarios imply drastically distinct physical and geochemical states, leading to fundamentally different conclusions on the dynamics of plate tectonics. We report in situ ultrasonic velocity measurements on a series of partially molten samples, composed of mixtures of olivine plus 0.1 to 4.0 volume % of basalt, under conditions relevant to the LVZ. Our measurements provide direct compressional (VP) and shear (VS) wave velocities and constrain attenuation as a function of melt fraction. Mantle partial melting appears to be a viable origin for the LVZ, for melt fractions as low as ~0.2%. In contrast, the presence of volatile elements appears necessary to explaining the extremely high VP/VS values observed in some local areas. The presence of melt in LVZ could play a major role in the dynamics of plate tectonics, favoring the decoupling of the plate relative to the asthenosphere.

Abstract

Subduction zones exhibit faster seismic wave velocities compared to the surrounding mantle due to the recycling of relatively cold oceanic lithosphere. In certain subduction zones, however, a 5–10 km thick low velocity layer (LVL) has been inferred to exist along the top surface of the subducting slab at depths of up to 250 km. Shear-wave velocities, in particular, within these layers have been estimated as up to 10% slower than the surrounding mantle. We have conducted high-pressure ultrasonic interferometric measurements to gain insight into the elastic properties of lawsonite [CaAl 2 (Si 2 O 7 )(OH) 2 ·H 2 O], a hydrous mineral phase stabilized under cold subduction zone conditions. In addition, we have computed the full elastic constant tensor at elevated pressures and temperature, using static electronic structure calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The bulk and shear modulus obtained from theory and experiments are in good agreement. We find that lawsonite has an unusually low shear modulus at high pressure and its formation in subducted oceanic crust can explain some seismic evidence for LVL at depths exceeding 100 km. To approach estimated LVL velocities requires lawsonite to form in the subducting crust as a result of a fluid influx due to the breakdown of other hydrous minerals such as serpentine. The formation of lawsonite additionally lowers seismic velocities because it forms at the expense of garnet, a mineral with relatively fast seismic velocities. LVL observations may therefore be used to place constraints on the amount of H 2 O subducted into the deep mantle.

Abstract

The high-pressure monazite – scheelite structure transition has been observed at P >4.57 GPa in CaSeO4 by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. It is a first-order transition with a 4.5% volume change and is severely hindered kinetically. Scheelite-type CaSeO4 remains to a maximum experimental pressure of 42.2 GPa and no (002) reflection, specifically indicative of a subgroup transition to a fergusonite-type structure, is observed. Scheelite-type CaSeO4 remains at ambient conditions, where the tetragonal unit cell has parameters of a = 5.04801(11) c = 11.6644(5) Å and V = 297.21(3) Å3 with Dcalc = 4.090 g cm–3. The diffraction pattern of the recovered material was refined in space group I41/a to Rp = 0.98%, wRp = 1.91%, GoF = 0.59, RFobs = 5.04%, wRFobs = 4.27%. The oxygen is located on the general 16f site at (0.2578(8) 0.3699(14) 0.5755(4)) and shares four identical bonds with Se (4a: ½ ½ ½) at 1.644(5) Å. The Ca (4b: 0, 0, ½) is eight-coordinated via O at 4 × 2.440(6) Å and 4 × 2.504(5) Å. This is further evidence of the dissimilarity of sulfate and selenate at high pressure and temperature conditions and the closer resemblance of the selenates to the orthophosphates, arsenates and vanadates, where this type of transition sequence has been described.

Abstract

We investigated the response of the crystal structure, lattice parameters, and unit-cell volume of hydrous layered silicate phlogopite at conditions relevant to subduction zone settings. We have used first principles simulation based on density functional theory to calculate the equation of state and full elastic constant tensor. Based on the generalized gradient approximation, the full single crystal elastic constant tensor with monoclinic symmetry shows significant anisotropy with the compressional elastic constants: c 11 = 181 GPa, c 22 = 185 GPa, c 33 = 62 GPa, the shear elastic constants c 44 = 14 GPa, c 55 = 20 GPa, c 66 = 68 Ga, and c 46 = −6 GPa; the off diagonal elastic constants c 12 = 48 GPa, c 13 = 12 GPa, c 23 = 12 GPa, c 15 = −16 GPa, c 25 = −5 GPa and c 35 = −1 GPa at zero pressure. The elastic anisotropy of phlogopite is larger than most of the layered hydrous phases relevant in the subduction zone conditions. The shear anisotropy, AV S for phlogopite is ∼77% at zero pressure condition and although it decreases upon compression it remains relatively high compared to other hydrous phases relevant in the subduction zone settings. We also note that the shear elastic constants for phlogopite are relatively low. Phlogopite also has a high isotropic bulk V P / V S ratio ∼2.0. However, the V P / V S ratio also exhibits significant anisotropy with values as low as 1.49. Thus, phlogopite bearing metasomatized mantle could readily explain unusual V P / V S ratio as observed from seismological studies from the mantle wedge regions of the subduction zone.

[1] Ultrasonic interferometry measurements in conjunction with in situ X-ray techniques have been used to measure compressional and shear wave velocities and densities of MgSiO3perovskite (Mg-Pv) and Mg0.95Fe0.042+Fe0.013+SiO3perovskite ((Mg, Fe)-Pv) in the multianvil at pressures up to 25 GPa and temperatures to 1200 K. Data for Mg-Pv are consistent with previous studies and the (Mg, Fe)-Pv sample has almost identical shear properties to Mg-Pv. The adiabatic bulk modulus,Ks, for (Mg, Fe)-Pv, however, is found to be substantially lower than Mg-Pv, with a refined value of 236 GPa and a pressure derivative of 4.7. It is proposed that this lowKSvalue result from a change in the elasticity of Fe-bearing perovskite at low pressures

Abstract

We have measured apatite solubility in calcic carbonatitic liquids and determined apatite/melt partition coefficients for a series of trace elements, including the rare earth elements (REE), high field strength elements (HFSE), Rb, Sr, U–Th–Pb. Experiments were performed between 4 and 6 GPa, from 1200 to 1380 °C, using the multianvil apparatus. Trace element concentrations were determined by laser ablation ICP-MS and electron microprobe. In addition, a specific protocol was designed to measure carbon concentration in the apatites, using the electron microprobe. Two starting apatite samples were used in order to test for the effect of apatite chemistry on partitioning behavior. Apatite solubility is lower in calcitic melts by a factor 3–5 compared to dolomitic melts (3–5.5 vs. 10–18 wt.% P2O5 in melt). We interpret this difference in terms of solubility product in the liquid and propose an empirical model for apatite saturation that takes into account melt calcium content. We conclude that calcitic melts that may form by melting of carbonated eclogites could be saturated with residual apatite, contrary to dolomitic melts formed in carbonated peridotites. Compatibility behavior of the REE depends on apatite silica content: REE are compatible in apatites containing 3.5–5 wt.% SiO2, with D REE apatite/carbonatite values between 1.5 and 4, whereas REE are incompatible in apatites containing 0.2 wt.% SiO2. HFSE, U, Th, and Y are compatible in silica-rich apatite, with D Th apatite/carbonatite ⩾ 5 while D Y apatite/carbonatite ⩾ 2 . Strontium is always retained in the melt, with D Sr apatite / carbonatite of the order of 0.5. Lead appears to be incompatible in apatite, although this finding is weakened by almost complete Pb loss to sample container. High silica concentration favors REE incorporation in apatite by allowing for charged balanced coupled substitution. Sulfur and carbonate may also favor REE incorporation in apatite. Our results allow to reconcile previously published experimental determinations of REE partitioning. We use our experimentally determined partition coefficients to investigate the impact of residual apatite during partial melting of recycled carbonated material (eclogite + sediments) and discuss how the chemical characteristics of the produced liquids can be affected by residual apatite.

Abstract

International audience; Rheology and deformation of serpentinized peridotite play and important role in the flow and dynamicsof thesubducting slab. Antigorite, the high-temperature variety mineral of serpentinegroup, coexists with olivine in serpentinized peridotite at conditions of subduction zones.It is generally accepted that antigorite mechanical strength is lower than olivine at geological strain rates. Therefore,in a bimineralic rock comprising olivine and antigorite, deformation localization is expected to occur in the weaker antigoriterather than in olivine. Based on polymineralic rocks mechanical and microstructural behaviours (e.g., Handy, 1990), two mainend-member configurations arepossible: the strong olivine crystals form a loadbearing framework(LBF) that contains spaces filled with antigorite; or the antigorite governsthe bulk rheology of the aggregate by forming an interconnected weak layer(IWL), while the olivine crystals behave as clasts.The aim of this study is to observe at which conditions an IWL stage may be achieved under simple shear deformation in serpentinized peridotite at subduction zones conditions.Wecarried out torsion experiments at high pressures (HP, > 2 GPa) and high temperatures (HT, 400-600°C) on antigorite + olivine aggregates asaproxy for partially serpentinized peridotite. The experiments are coupled with in-situX-ray tomography on the PSICHE beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron. Weretrieve and quantify 2-D and 3-D information on fabricsand/or microstructureevolutionsunder HP-HT, extent of interconnection(or connectivity), preferred microstructural directions and morphologyof the weak antigorite phase. We also perform post-mortemelectron microscopy analysis onrecovered samplesof interestto link our X-ray tomography observations to the plastic propertiesand/or deformation mechanism of the phases.Our results suggest that the total connectivity of the weak antigorite increases with thestrain extenttransferred to the samples, with antigorite minerals forming, in some cases, clear interconnected weak layers in agreement with IWL behaviour.The stronger olivinethen shows localized lattice bending/rotation in clasts indicating local deformation accommodated by intracrystalline low-temperature plasticity.
