Search

Of all the myriad environments in our Solar System, the least explored are the distant Ice Giants Uranus and Neptune, and their diverse satellite and ring systems. These ‘intermediate-sized’ worlds are the last remaining class of Solar System planet to be characterised by a dedicated robotic mission, and may shape the paradigm for the most common outcome of planetary formation throughout our galaxy. In response to the 2019 European Space Agency call for scientific themes in the 2030s and 2040s (known as Voyage 2050), we advocated that an international partnership mission to explore an Ice Giant should be a cornerstone of ESA’s science planning in the coming decade, targeting launch opportunities in the early 2030s. This article summarises the inter-disciplinary science opportunities presented in that White Paper [1], and briefly describes developments since 2019.

During the Grand Finale stage of the Cassini mission, organic-rich ring material was discovered to be flowing into Saturn's equatorial upper atmosphere at a surprisingly large rate. Through a series of photochemical models, we have examined the consequences of this ring material on the chemistry of Saturn's neutral and ionized atmosphere. We find that if a substantial fraction of this material enters the atmosphere as vapor or becomes vaporized as the solid ring particles ablate upon atmospheric entry, then the ring-derived vapor would strongly affect the composition of Saturn's ionosphere and neutral stratosphere. Our surveys of Cassini infrared and ultraviolet remote-sensing data from the final few years of the mission, however, reveal none of these predicted chemical consequences. We therefore conclude that either (1) the inferred ring influx represents an anomalous, transient situation that was triggered by some recent dynamical event in the ring system that occurred a few months to a few tens of years before the 2017 end of the Cassini mission, or (2) a large fraction of the incoming material must have been entering the atmosphere as small dust particles less than ~100 nm in radius, rather than as vapor or as large particles that are likely to ablate. Future observations or upper limits for stratospheric neutral species such as HC$_3$N, HCN, and CO$_2$ at infrared wavelengths could shed light on the origin, timing, magnitude, and nature of a possible vapor-rich ring-inflow event., Comment: accepted in Icarus

We present an analysis of all currently available ground-based imaging of Neptune in the mid-infrared. Dating between 2003 and 2020, the images reveal changes in Neptune’s mid-infrared (∼8–25 μm) emission over time in the years surrounding Neptune’s 2005 southern summer solstice. Images sensitive to stratospheric ethane (∼12 μm), methane (∼8 μm), and CH3D (∼9 μm) display significant subseasonal temporal variation on regional and global scales. Comparison with H2 S(1) hydrogen quadrupole (∼17.035 μm) spectra suggests that these changes are primarily related to stratospheric temperature changes. The stratosphere appears to have cooled between 2003 and 2009 across multiple filtered wavelengths, followed by a dramatic warming of the south pole between 2018 and 2020. Conversely, upper-tropospheric temperatures—inferred from ∼17 to 25 μm imaging—appear invariant during this period, except for the south pole, which appeared warmest between 2003 and 2006. We discuss the observed variability in the context of seasonal forcing, tropospheric meteorology, and the solar cycle. Collectively, these data provide the strongest evidence to date that processes produce subseasonal variation on both global and regional scales in Neptune’s stratosphere.

Photochemical hazes are important opacity sources in temperate exoplanet atmospheres, hindering current observations from characterizing exoplanet atmospheric compositions. The haziness of an atmosphere is determined by the balance between haze production and removal. However, the material-dependent removal physics of the haze particles is currently unknown under exoplanetary conditions. Here we provide experimentally-measured surface energies for a grid of temperate exoplanet hazes to characterize haze removal in exoplanetary atmospheres. We found large variations of surface energies for hazes produced under different energy sources, atmospheric compositions, and temperatures. The surface energies of the hazes were found to be the lowest around 400 K for the cold plasma samples, leading to the lowest removal rates. We show a suggestive correlation between haze surface energy and atmospheric haziness with planetary equilibrium temperature. We hypothesize that habitable zone exoplanets could be less hazy, as they would possess high-surface-energy hazes which can be removed efficiently., Comment: 6 figures, 2 tables, 23 pages

1. Overview The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be the premier observatory for infrared planetary science over the coming decade, revolutionising our views of cold, distant targets that have remained out of reach to ground-based facilities. For planetary atmospheres, JWST offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the weather and climate in three dimensions, from the turbulent cloud layers to the chemically-rich stratospheres, via spatially-resolved spectroscopic mapping in the 1-30 µm range. This presentation will summarise the JWST Giant Planet Atmospheres programme during the first year of science operations (Cycle 1, 2022-23), which is set to observe all four giants. These observations have been made possible by a combination of Guaranteed-Time Observing (GTO), Early Release Science (ERS), and General Observing (GO), and their combination permits comparative planetology of the Gas and Ice Giants. This presentation will: (i) summarise the science goals at each planet; (ii) discuss the available toolkits for data reduction, mapping, and spectral interpretation; and (iii) advocate for a ground-based campaign to support the JWST observations. 2. Giant Planet Observations Ice Giants: Uranus and Neptune Comparing the atmospheric dynamics and chemistry of Uranus and Neptune will provide new insights into the processes shaping intermediate-sized and chemically-enriched worlds. Voyager’s infrared observations were largely limited to the far-IR, and despite recent advances in ground-based observations (Fletcher et al., doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2013.11.035, Roman et al., doi:10.3847/1538-3881/ab5dc7) and disc-integrated spectroscopy (Orton et al., doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2014.07.010; Rowe-Gurney et al., doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2021.114506), Ice Giant stratospheres have remained largely inaccessible. JWST MIRI 5-28 µm spectroscopic maps of Uranus (GTO1248) and Neptune (GTO1249) will reveal spatial gradients of temperature and chemicals, to diagnose the circulation and chemistry of Ice Giant stratospheres for the first time (Moses et al., doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2018.02.004), and link it to meteorological activity in the troposphere. Simultaneous NIRSPEC 2-5 µm spectroscopy of Uranus (GTO1248) will reveal aerosol structures in the troposphere, and H3+ emission in the ionosphere. Both Uranus and Neptune will be observed several times over a full rotation to construct global maps. MIRI observations of Neptune will be repeated when the Ice Giant returns to the Field of Regard (FoR), to search for the sources of temporal variability of mid-IR emission (Roman et al., EPSC2021) over timescales of months (GO1604). Expected dates: Uranus window 1 (2022-08-05 to 2022-09-26), Uranus window 2 (2022-12-22 to 2023-02-09), Neptune window 1 (2022-06-11 to 2022-08-02), Neptune window 2 (2022-10-31 to 2022-12-19). Gas Giants: Jupiter and Saturn The Gas Giants provide a crucial test of JWST’s capabilities to explore extended, rotating, moving, and bright targets. Indeed, the angular sizes of Jupiter and Saturn means that mosaics are required to map atmospheric regions of interest, and the high surface brightness means that MIRI observations are expected to saturate beyond 11 µm (Jupiter) or 16 µm (Saturn). On Jupiter, we have selected two scientific targets: the Great Red Spot will be targeted via mosaics with MIRI (5-11 µm, GTO1246) and NIRSpec (1-5 µm, ERS1373), to understand how the circulation of this archetypal anticyclone influences its temperatures, composition (e.g., ammonia as a cloud-forming volatile, phosphine as a tracer of vertical mixing), and aerosols. Secondly, Jupiter’s south pole will be observed with NIRSpec and MIRI (ERS1373) to understand how energy propagates from the aurora (via H3+ emission) to the stratosphere (via methane emission). ERS1373 will also use NIRCAM imaging (1-5 µm) to measure atmospheric motions at multiple levels in Jupiter’s clouds and tropospheric hazes. For Saturn’s atmosphere, MIRI 5-16 µm spectroscopy (GTO1247) offers the opportunity to revisit the seasonally-evolving giant five years after the demise of the Cassini mission. Saturn’s summertime hemisphere will be mapped from the pole to the equator, capturing the demise of the polar stratospheric vortex since summer solstice in 2017 (Fletcher et al., doi:10.1038/s41467-018-06017-3). The atmospheric observations are part of wider programmes to capture MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCAM imaging of Jupiter and Saturn’s satellite and ring systems (GTO1247/ERS1373). Finally, a target-of-opportunity programme (GO1424) will respond within 2 weeks to unforeseen extreme events on either Jupiter or Saturn, providing NIRSpec and MIRI spectroscopic maps of cometary or asteroid impact sites, or the eruptions of significant new storms. In the event of a trigger, this would be repeated twice to capture the evolution of the feature. Expected dates: Jupiter window 1 (2022-06-23 to 2022-08-15), Jupiter window 2 (2022-11-06 to 2022-12-27), Saturn window 1 (2022-05-10 to 2022-07-01), Saturn window 2 (2022-09-27 to 2022-11-16). 3. Data Analysis Toolkit We will present the current status of data analysis tools: Forward-Modelled MIRI spectra: the suite of radiative transfer and spectral analysis tools (NEMESIS, Irwin et al., doi:10.1016/j.jqsrt.2007.11.006) have been adapted to simulate MIRI 5-28 µm spectra in all 12 sub-bands (disperser, detector, and grating combinations), generating idealised synthetic cubes from temperature, composition, and aerosol maps from existing data and/or photochemical models (e.g., Moses et al., doi:10.1016/j.icarus.2018.02.004). MIRI simulations: Synthetic spectra are passed to the MIRISim package to generate MIRI detector images, testing assumptions about exposure times, dither patterns, and background subtraction. Detector images are them passed to the MIRI calibration pipeline, reconstructing MIRI cubes as if they were taken by the observatory. Data processing: MIRI and NIRSpec spectral cubes are then passed through an image navigation pipeline to construct maps, so that multiple dithers/exposures can be coadded. Spectral inversion: NEMESIS will then be used to assess retrievability of the original temperature, composition, and aerosol inputs, preparing the techniques required for the real data in 2022. 4. Ground-Based Support Giant planet atmospheres evolve significantly with time, and spatial, temporal, and spectral context information will be required to fully exploit the JWST observations. For example: observations of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot will rely on precise positioning information in early 2022; spatial variations in thermal emission related to storms/vortices on each world will require visible-light context imaging; and candidates for impact events and significant storm eruptions will need to be rapidly assessed to determine the use of triggered observations. We advocate for a programme of ground-based support, both from professional and amateur observers, in the times preceding the FoR windows specified above. Amateur observers should continue to make use of the PVOL database (http://pvol2.ehu.eus/pvol2/) - see presentation by Hueso et al. (EPSC2021-80) for further details.

Introduction: NASA’s Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) acquired mid-infrared (5 - 37 micron) disc-averaged spectra of Neptune in May 2004, November 2004, November 2005, and May 2006. Meadows et al., (2008, doi: 10.1016/j.icarus.2008.05.023) discovered Neptune's complex hydrocarbons methylacetylene and diacetylene and derived their abundances using the May 2004 data. The rest of the Neptune data has yet to be published. The data have all been reduced using the same methodology as Rowe-Gurney et al., (2021, doi: 10.1016/j.icarus.2021.114506) used for Uranus, so that each year can be reliably compared. We detect the same hydrocarbons seen in Meadows et al., (2008). This includes the strongest bands of methane (CH4), acetylene (C2H2) and ethane (C2H6) as-well-as weaker but still clearly recognisable features of ethylene (C2H4), carbon dioxide, methyl (CH3), methylacetylene (C3H4) and diacetylene (C4H2). At Uranus, there was a considerable longitudinal variation in stratospheric emission detected in the Spitzer data for multiple epochs (Rowe-Gurney et al., 2021). A variation is not present at Neptune in 2005 or late 2004, when all the separate longitudes displayed the same brightness temperature. In May 2004 a stratospheric variation is present, although it is tentative due to the deviation only appearing at a single longitude and because there are larger uncertainties on this early dataset. If the variation is real then it could be caused by stratospheric methane injection associated with convective clouds or perturbations to the location of the south polar warm vortex (Orton et al., 2012, doi: 10.1016/j.pss.2011.06.013). Optimal Estimation Retrievals: The data from 2005 have optimised exposure times, multiple observed longitudes, and therefore the lowest noise. It is this data we are using to derive the vertical structure of the temperature and composition in the stratosphere and upper troposphere (between around 1 nanobar and 2 bars of pressure). We present full optimal estimation inversions (using the NEMESIS retrieval algorithm, Irwin et al., 2008, doi: 10.1016/j.jqsrt.2007.11.006) of the globally averaged November 2005 data with the aim of constraining the temperature profile and the abundances of the stratospheric hydrocarbons. We fit both the low-resolution (R~120) and high-resolution (R~600) module data, testing multiple temperature priors derived from chemical models (Moses et al., 2018, doi: 10.1016/j.icarus.2018.02.004) and observations from AKARI (Fletcher et al., 2010, doi: 10.1051/0004-6361/200913358). Initial findings show that we are sensitive to stratospheric D/H ratio (derived from the relative abundances of CH4 and CH3D) and therefore we will attempt to constrain this value by finding the best fit for our model. Conclusion: Full spectrum mid-infrared data from Neptune in 2005 taken by the Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer is to be analysed using optimal estimation retrievals for the first time. The globally-averaged stratospheric temperature structure and the abundances of stratospheric hydrocarbons will be determined along with the ratio of D/H. The disc-averaged thermal and chemical structure from Spitzer will likely be our best characterisation of Neptune’s thermal structure until JWST/MIRI acquired spatially-resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy in 2022.

With no analogues in the Solar System, the discovery of thousands of exoplanets with masses and radii intermediate between Earth and Neptune was one of the big surprises of exoplanet science. These super-Earths and sub-Neptunes likely represent the most common outcome of planet formation. Mass and radius measurements indicate a diversity in bulk composition much wider than for gas giants; however, direct spectroscopic detections of molecular absorption and constraints on the gas mixing ratios have largely remained limited to planets more massive than Neptune. Here, we analyze a combined Hubble/Spitzer Space Telescope dataset of 12 transits and 20 eclipses of the sub-Neptune GJ 3470 b, whose mass of 12.6 $M_\oplus$ places it near the half-way point between previously studied exo-Neptunes (22-23 $M_\oplus$) and exoplanets known to have rocky densities (7 $M_\oplus$). Obtained over many years, our data set provides a robust detection of water absorption (>5$\sigma$) and a thermal emission detection from the lowest irradiated planet to date. We reveal a low-metallicity, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere similar to a gas giant, but strongly depleted in methane gas. The low, near-solar metallicity (O/H=0.2-18) sets important constraints on the potential planet formation processes at low masses as well as the subsequent accretion of solids. The low methane abundance indicates that methane is destroyed much more efficiently than previously predicted, suggesting that the CH$_4$/CO transition curve has to be revisited for close-in planets. Finally, we also find a sharp drop in the cloud opacity at 2-3 $\mu$m characteristic of Mie scattering, which enables narrow constraints on the cloud particle size and makes GJ 3470b a keystone target for mid-IR characterization with JWST., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy (July 1, 2019)

Atmospheres in our solar system range from oxidizing to reducing, transient to dense, veiled by clouds and hazes to transparent. Observations already suggest that exoplanets exhibit an even more diverse range of atmospheric chemistry and composition. Nevertheless, there are commonalities across the atmospheres of our solar system that provide valuable guidance and lessons for observing and interpreting exoplanetary atmospheres. Lessons gleaned from decades of study of planetary atmospheric chemistry are synthesized and explored to understand their implications for exoplanets.

Recent transit spectra suggest organic aerosol formation in the atmosphere of sub-Neptunes. Sulfur gases are expected to be present in warm exoplanet atmospheres with high metallicity. Many aspects of the sulfur fixation process by photochemistry in planetary atmospheres are not fully understood. In this work, tholins produced in a CO2-rich atmosphere simulation experiment with H2S were analyzed with very high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) that allows for searching specific molecules in addition to providing some insight on the mixture complexity. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental investigation of sulfur-bearing organic aerosol formation from irradiation of H2S at temperatures relevant to warm exoplanets. The analysis of the mass spectra shows that the soluble organic fraction of the solid particles contains over 2500 organosulfur (CHS/CHOS/CHNS/CHNOS) molecular formulas (73% of all assigned signals) within a broad mass range (from 50 to 400 u, atomic mass unit). In particular, 14 sulfuric acid derivatives were detected and 13 unique molecular formulae that could correspond to amino acid derivatives were identified. This high molecular diversity indicates a rich and active sulfur chemistry triggered by irradiation of H2S. The average elemental composition (wt%) of the soluble fraction of the particles is 40%C, 30%O, 21%S, 6%H, and 3%N, making the sulfur abundance a factor of ∼14 larger than in the initial gas composition. Our analysis of experimental simulations shows that organosulfur species are likely an important component of the haze in exoplanet atmospheres.

Gas has been detected in many exoplanetary systems ($>$10 Myr), thought to be released in the destruction of volatile-rich planetesimals orbiting in exo-Kuiper belts. In this letter, we aim to explore whether gas is also expected in the Kuiper belt (KB) in our Solar System. To quantify the gas release in our Solar System, we use models for gas release that have been applied to extrasolar planetary systems, as well as a physical model that accounts for gas released due to the progressive internal warming of large planetesimals. We find that only bodies larger than about 4 km can still contain CO ice after 4.6 Gyr of evolution. This finding may provide a clue as to why Jupiter-family comets, thought to originate in the Kuiper belt, are deficient in CO compared to Oort-clouds comets. We predict that gas is still produced in the KB right now at a rate of $2 \times 10^{-8}$ M$_\oplus$/Myr for CO and orders of magnitude more when the Sun was younger. Once released, the gas is quickly pushed out by the Solar wind. Therefore, we predict a gas wind in our Solar System starting at the KB location and extending far beyond with regards to the heliosphere with a current total CO mass of $\sim 2 \times 10^{-12}$ M$_\oplus$. We also predict the existence of a slightly more massive atomic gas wind made of carbon and oxygen (neutral and ionized) with a mass of $\sim 10^{-11}$ M$_\oplus$. We predict that gas is currently present in our Solar System beyond the Kuiper belt and that although it cannot be detected with current instrumentation, it could be observed in the future with an in situ mission using an instrument similar to Alice on New Horizons with larger detectors. NASA's Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) acquired mid-infrared (5-37 microns) disc-averaged spectra of Uranus very near to its equinox in December 2007. A mean spectrum was constructed from observations of multiple central meridian longitudes, spaced equally around the planet, which has provided the opportunity for the most comprehensive globally-averaged characterisation of Uranus' temperature and composition ever obtained (Orton et al., 2014 a [arXiv:1407.2120], b [arXiv:1407.2118]). In this work we analyse the disc-averaged spectra at four separate central meridian longitudes to reveal significant longitudinal variability in thermal emission occurring in Uranus' stratosphere during the 2007 equinox. We detect a variability of up to 15% at wavelengths sensitive to stratospheric methane, ethane and acetylene at the ~0.1-mbar level. The tropospheric hydrogen-helium continuum and deuterated methane absorption exhibit a negligible variation (less than 2%), constraining the phenomenon to the stratosphere. Building on the forward-modelling analysis of the global average study, we present full optimal estimation inversions (using the NEMESIS retrieval algorithm, Irwin et al., 2008 [10.1016/j.jqsrt.2007.11.006]) of the Uranus-2007 spectra at each longitude to distinguish between thermal and compositional variability. We found that the variations can be explained by a temperature change of less than 3 K in the stratosphere. Near-infrared observations from Keck II NIRC2 in December 2007 (Sromovsky et al., 2009 [arXiv:1503.01957], de Pater et al., 2011 [10.1016/j.icarus.2011.06.022]), and mid-infrared observations from VLT/VISIR in 2009 (Roman et al., 2020 [arXiv:1911.12830]), help to localise the potential sources to either large scale uplift or stratospheric wave phenomena., 26 pages, 21 figures, to be published in Icarus (accepted 2021-04-27)

Using 2D thermal structure models and pseudo-2D chemical kinetics models, we explore how atmospheric temperatures and composition change as a function of altitude and longitude within the equatorial regions of close-in transiting Neptune-class exoplanets at different distances from their host stars. Our models predict that the day-night stratospheric temperature contrasts increase with increasing planetary effective temperatures T_eff; atmospheric composition also changes significantly with T_eff. Horizontal transport-induced quenching is very effective in our simulated exo-Neptune atmospheres, acting to homogenize the vertical profiles of species abundances with longitude at stratospheric pressures where infrared observations are sensitive. Our models have important implications for planetary emission observations as a function of orbital phase with the Ariel mission. Cooler solar-composition exo-Neptunes with T_eff = 500-700 K are predicted to have small variations in infrared emission spectra with orbital phase, making them less robust phase-curve targets for Ariel. Hot solar-composition exo-Neptunes with T_eff > 1300 K exhibit strong variations in infrared emission with orbital phase but are arguably less interesting from an atmospheric chemistry standpoint, with spectral signatures being dominated by a small number of species whose abundances are expected to be constant with longitude and consistent with thermochemical equilibrium. Solar-composition exo-Neptunes with T_eff = 900-1100 K reside in an interesting intermediate regime, with infrared phase curve variations being affected by both temperature and composition variations. This interesting intermediate regime shifts to smaller temperatures as atmospheric metallicity is increased, making cool higher-metallicity Neptune-class planets appropriate targets for Ariel phase-curve observations., submitted to an Ariel special issue in Experimental Astronomy, 29-July-2020. Sub-Neptunes (Rp~1.25-4 REarth) remain the most commonly detected exoplanets to date. However, it remains difficult for observations to tell whether these intermediate-sized exoplanets have surfaces and where their surfaces are located. Here we propose that the abundances of trace species in the visible atmospheres of these sub-Neptunes can be used as proxies for determining the existence of surfaces and approximate surface conditions. As an example, we used a state-of-the-art photochemical model to simulate the atmospheric evolution of K2-18b and investigate its final steady-state composition with surfaces located at different pressures levels (Psurf). We find the surface location has a significant impact on the atmospheric abundances of trace species, making them deviate significantly from their thermochemical equilibrium and "no-surface" conditions. This result arises primarily because the pressure-temperature conditions at the surface determine whether photochemically-produced species can be recycled back to their favored thermochemical-equilibrium forms and transported back to the upper atmosphere. For an assumed H2-rich atmosphere for K2-18b, we identify seven chemical species that are most sensitive to the existence of surfaces: ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), acetylene (C2H2), ethane (C2H6), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2). The ratio between the observed and the no-surface abundances of these species, can help distinguish the existence of a shallow surface (Psurf < 10 bar), an intermediate surface (10 bar < Psurf < 100 bar), and a deep surface (Psurf > 100 bar). Existing observations of Uranus and Neptune’s fundamental physical properties can be fitted with a wide range of interior models. A key parameter in these models is the bulk rock:ice ratio and models broadly fall into ice-dominated (ice giant) and rock-dominated (rock giant) categories. Here we consider how observations of Neptune’s atmospheric temperature and composition (H2, He, D/H, CO, CH4, H2O and CS) can provide further constraints. The tropospheric CO profile in particular is highly diagnostic of interior ice content, but is also controversial, with deep values ranging from zero to 0.5 parts per million. Most existing CO profiles imply extreme O/H enrichments of >250 times solar composition, thus favouring an ice giant. However, such high O/H enrichment is not consistent with D/H observations for a fully mixed and equilibrated Neptune. CO and D/H measurements can be reconciled if there is incomplete interior mixing (ice giant) or if tropospheric CO has a solely external source and only exists in the upper troposphere (rock giant). An interior with more rock than ice is also more compatible with likely outer solar system ice sources. We primarily consider Neptune, but similar arguments apply to Uranus, which has comparable C/H and D/H enrichment, but no observed tropospheric CO. While both ice- and rock-dominated models are viable, we suggest a rock giant provides a more consistent match to available atmospheric observations.This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Future exploration of ice giant systems’.

Context One-dimensional modelling efforts for icy giant atmospheres have been performed in the past, from pioneering works to more recent comprehensive studies [2]. Circulation patterns in the troposphere and stratosphere inferred from visible, infrared, and microwave observations and models have been discussed in [3], but few fully three-dimensional models of Ice Giants have ever been presented. Among the differences between these studies are the estimated radiative time constants and the consequences for the atmospheric circulation on Uranus and Neptune. For instance, comparing 2018 VLT images to Voyager data, Roman et al. [4] pointed out that the Uranian troposphere underwent almost no changes in terms of thermal structure over the intervening decades, pointing out that either the radiative time constants are much longer than estimated by Li et al. [2], or there is a very efficient energy redistribution by global circulation. Deciphering such questions as well as preparing future observations require a supporting model able to adequately simulate atmospheric structure of these planets. Method Here, following what has been previously done for Saturn [5] and Jupiter [6], 1-D radiative-convective equilibrium modelling – corresponding to a GCM column in the absence of dynamics – is performed with a radiative-transfer code based on a correlated-k method and a two-stream solver. We utilise modern estimates of gaseous opacities, with vertical and horizontal distributions provided by photochemical modelling [7]. We explore the response to seasonal solar forcing along with the sensitivity to aerosols - with optical properties generated based upon Mie theory - which are poorly constrained by observations and therefore a source of uncertainties for radiative models. Full 3-D simulations with dynamics are discussed in a companion abstract [8]. Results First, aerosol-free simulations with planetary-averaged gaseous opacities lead to thermal structures that are globally too cold in the modelled stratospheres (e.g. more than 30K in the Uranian case). This ‘energy crisis’ in the middle atmosphere is an outcome that previous models have already been facing, and various processes have been proposed to solve the enigma, such as gravity waves breaking or radiative processes due to aerosols. Thus, in the present work, we investigate if and how this gap could be closed within our radiative model in the absence of dynamics, and provide some quantitative analysis of this ‘energy crisis’. As photochemical models such as those by Moses et al. [7] point out, there exists considerable leeway in the choice of hydrocarbons profiles (e.g. assuming different eddy diffusion coefficients) to constrain our model that are still consistent with the available data. Furthermore, due to both seasonal photochemistry and atmospheric circulation, there are strong evidence for latitudinal variations of methane in both planets and some theoretical evidence for latitudinal variations of hydrocarbons, at least on Neptune. Hence we prescribe seasonal variations of their abundances within our radiative transfer based on KINETICS [7] outputs. On this basis, we present how the thermal structure and its seasonal patterns are affected. In addition, we explore the parameter space of aerosol properties – within the range of observational constraints - with various sets of synthetic tropospheric clouds (CH4,H2S) and stratospheric haze (optical depth, albedo, particle size distribution, etc.). For the different sets of simulations, we discuss the inferred radiative time constants, how they can be compared to previous work and how this will affect the circulation and constrain energy redistribution once dynamics is activated. Finally, compared to previous works, we go one step further to provide a solid ground upon which the full 3-D circulation model for the Ice Giants can grow. Such work will be useful for interpreting future observations of Uranus and Neptune from the James Webb Space Telescope and new missions to these outer worlds. Above the dynamic clouds in Neptune’s atmosphere, the temperatures and photochemical composition within Neptune’s stratosphere are expected to respond to slowly modulating insolation over decades [1]. With Neptune’s seasons stretching over more than forty years, the entire history of reliable infrared observations resolving the planet’s disk comprises a mere fraction of a season. Yet, as we shall show, within this relatively brief window, observations appear to show changes in emission that would imply that sub-seasonal processes are significantly modifying the chemical and/or thermal structure in Neptune's stratosphere. We present an analysis of the mid-infrared images and spectra of Neptune acquired using the VISIR instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) between 2006 and 2018. Images in Q-band (17.65, 18.72, 19.50 µm) are used to infer upper-tropospheric temperatures (~200 mbar), while Neptune’s stratosphere (~1 mbar) is analyzed using a combination of imaging and spectra sensitive to emission from ethane (12.2 µm), methane (7.9 µm), and the S(1) hydrogen quadrupole (17.03 µm). While we find that temperatures in the upper troposphere show no significant changes in time (remaining consistent with temperatures inferred from 1989 Voyager-IRIS measurements [2, 3]), the stratospheric emission appears to have changed unexpectedly over the past decade. Absolute radiances are uncertain, but relative trends in the spatially resolved emission are robust and show an asymmetric change in brightness temperature of up to ~3 K between and 2006 and 2008. The 2008 trend in emission continued throughout 2009 observations before returning to a relatively more symmetric pattern in 2018 (see Figure 1). Combined with the 2006 H2 S(1) quadrupole data, the observations indicate that the distribution of stratospheric emission observed in 2006 can likely be explained by the stratospheric temperature structure. However, no contemporaneous VLT-VISIR observations of the quadrupole emission were made in subsequent years, and so the nature of the observed changes between 2006 and 2008-2009 are ambiguous–they can potentially be explained by changes in the stratospheric temperatures, changes in the ethane abundances, or changes in both temperature and chemistry. The timing of these changes coincides with an extended maximum in Neptune’s photometric brightness following the 2005 southern summer solstice [4] and a decline in the discrete cloud coverage apparent in HST imaging [5]. Altogether, these observations suggest that Neptune’s stratosphere experiences intra-seasonal changes that may be coupled to dynamical forcing or variable mixing from the troposphere on timescales of years or less. Sulfur gases substantially affect the photochemistry of planetary atmospheres in our Solar System, and are expected to be important components in exoplanet atmospheres. However, sulfur photochemistry in the context of exoplanets is poorly understood due to a lack of chemical kinetics information for sulfur species under relevant conditions. Here, we study the photochemical role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in warm CO2-rich exoplanet atmospheres (800 K) by carrying out laboratory simulations. We find that H2S plays a prominent role in photochemistry, even when present in the atmosphere at relatively low concentrations (1.6%). It participates in both gas and solid phase chemistry, leading to the formation of other sulfur gas products (CH3SH/SO, C2H4S/OCS, SO2/S2 and CS2) and to an increase in solid haze particle production and compositional complexity. Our study shows that we may expect thicker haze with small particle sizes (20–140 nm) for warm CO2-rich exoplanet atmospheres that possess H2S. Laboratory experiments show that the inclusion of even small quantities of sulfur in the atmospheres of exoplanets at 800 K significantly increases photochemical complexity, both in the vapour and in the solid phase: many sulfur gas products are created (including potential biosignature gases) and the production of organic haze particles increases threefold.

Uranus and Neptune, and their diverse satellite and ring systems, represent the least explored environments of our Solar System, and yet may provide the archetype for the most common outcome of planetary formation throughout our galaxy. Ice Giants will be the last remaining class of Solar System planet to have a dedicated orbital explorer, and international efforts are under way to realise such an ambitious mission in the coming decades. In 2019, the European Space Agency released a call for scientific themes for its strategic science planning process for the 2030s and 2040s, known as Voyage 2050. We used this opportunity to review our present-day knowledge of the Uranus and Neptune systems, producing a revised and updated set of scientific questions and motivations for their exploration. This review article describes how such a mission could explore their origins, ice-rich interiors, dynamic atmospheres, unique magnetospheres, and myriad icy satellites, to address questions at the heart of modern planetary science. These two worlds are superb examples of how planets with shared origins can exhibit remarkably different evolutionary paths: Neptune as the archetype for Ice Giants, whereas Uranus may be atypical. Exploring Uranus' natural satellites and Neptune's captured moon Triton could reveal how Ocean Worlds form and remain active, redefining the extent of the habitable zone in our Solar System. For these reasons and more, we advocate that an Ice Giant System explorer should become a strategic cornerstone mission within ESA's Voyage 2050 programme, in partnership with international collaborators, and targeting launch opportunities in the early 2030s., Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures, accepted to Planetary and Space Science

Launching in 2028, ESA’s 0.64 m2 Atmospheric Remote-sensing Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) survey of ∼1000 transiting exoplanets will build on the legacies of NASA’s Kepler and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and complement the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) by placing its high-precision exoplanet observations into a large, statistically significant planetary population context. With continuous 0.5–7.8 μm coverage from both FGS (0.5–0.6, 0.6–0.81, and 0.81–1.1 μm photometry; 1.1–1.95 μm spectroscopy) and AIRS (1.95–7.80 μm spectroscopy), ARIEL will determine atmospheric compositions and probe planetary formation histories during its 3.5 yr mission. NASA’s proposed Contribution to ARIEL Spectroscopy of Exoplanets (CASE) would be a subsystem of ARIEL’s Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) instrument consisting of two visible-to-infrared detectors, associated readout electronics, and thermal control hardware. FGS, to be built by the Polish Academy of Sciences Space Research Centre, will provide both fine guiding and visible to near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy, providing powerful diagnostics of atmospheric aerosol contribution and planetary albedo, which play a crucial role in establishing planetary energy balance. The CASE team presents here an independent study of the capabilities of ARIEL to measure exoplanetary metallicities, which probe the conditions of planet formation, and FGS to measure scattering spectral slopes, which indicate if an exoplanet has atmospheric aerosols (clouds and hazes), and geometric albedos, which help establish planetary climate. Our simulations assume that ARIEL’s performance will be 1.3×the photon-noise limit. This value is motivated by current transiting exoplanet observations: Spitzer/IRAC and Hubble/WFC3 have empirically achieved 1.15×the photon-noise limit. One could expect similar performance from ARIEL, JWST, and other proposed future missions such as HabEx, LUVOIR, and Origins. Our design reference mission simulations show that ARIEL could measure the mass– metallicity relationship of its 1000-planet single-visit sample to >7.5σ and that FGS could distinguish between clear, cloudy, and hazy skies and constrain an exoplanet’s atmospheric aerosol composition to ≳5σ for hundreds of targets, providing statistically transformative science for exoplanet atmospheres.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to revolutionize the field of exoplanets. The broad wavelength coverage and the high sensitivity of its instruments will allow characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres with unprecedented precision. Following the Call for the Cycle 1 Early Release Science Program, the Transiting Exoplanet Community was awarded time to observe several targets, including WASP-43b. The atmosphere of this hot Jupiter has been intensively observed but still harbors some mysteries, especially concerning the day-night temperature gradient, the efficiency of the atmospheric circulation, and the presence of nightside clouds. We will constrain these properties by observing a full orbit of the planet and extracting its spectroscopic phase curve in the 5--12 $\mu$m range with JWST/MIRI. To prepare for these observations, we performed an extensive modeling work with various codes: radiative transfer, chemical kinetics, cloud microphysics, global circulation models, JWST simulators, and spectral retrieval. Our JWST simulations show that we should achieve a precision of 210 ppm per 0.1 $\mu$m spectral bin on average, which will allow us to measure the variations of the spectrum in longitude and measure the night-side emission spectrum for the first time. If the atmosphere of WASP-43b is clear, our observations will permit us to determine if its atmosphere has an equilibrium or disequilibrium chemical composition, providing eventually the first conclusive evidence of chemical quenching in a hot Jupiter atmosphere. For solar-system objects, ultraviolet spectroscopy has been critical in identifying sources for stratospheric heating and measuring the abundances of a variety of hydrocarbon and sulfur-bearing species, produced via photochemical mechanisms, as well as oxygen and ozone. To date, less than 20 exoplanets have been probed in this critical wavelength range (0.2-0.4 um). Here we use data from Hubble's newly implemented WFC3 UVIS G280 grism to probe the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b in the ultraviolet through optical in combination with observations at infrared wavelengths. We analyze and interpret HAT-P-41b's 0.2-5.0 um transmission spectrum using a broad range of methodologies including multiple treatments of data systematics as well as comparisons with atmospheric forward, cloud microphysical, and multiple atmospheric retrieval models. Although some analysis and interpretation methods favor the presence of clouds or potentially a combination of Na, VO, AlO, and CrH to explain the ultraviolet through optical portions of HAT-P-41b's transmission spectrum, we find that the presence of a significant H- opacity provides the most robust explanation. We obtain a constraint for the abundance of H-, log(H-) = -8.65 +/- 0.62 in HAT-P-41b's atmosphere, which is several orders of magnitude larger than predictions from equilibrium chemistry for a 1700 - 1950 K hot Jupiter. We show that a combination of photochemical and collisional processes on hot hydrogen-dominated exoplanets can readily supply the necessary amount of H- and suggest that such processes are at work in HAT-P-41b and many other hot Jupiter atmospheres., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures. A time-variable 1D photochemical model is used to study the distribution of stratospheric hydrocarbons as a function of altitude, latitude, and season on Uranus and Neptune. The results for Neptune indicate that in the absence of stratospheric circulation or other meridional transport processes, the hydrocarbon abundances exhibit strong seasonal and meridional variations in the upper stratosphere, but that these variations become increasingly damped with depth due to increasing dynamical and chemical time scales. At high altitudes, hydrocarbon mixing ratios are typically largest where the solar insolation is the greatest, leading to strong hemispheric dichotomies between the summer-to-fall hemisphere and winter-to-spring hemisphere. At mbar pressures and deeper, slower chemistry and diffusion lead to latitude variations that become more symmetric about the equator. On Uranus, the stagnant, poorly mixed stratosphere confines methane and its photochemical products to higher pressures, where chemistry and diffusion time scales remain large. Seasonal variations in hydrocarbons are therefore predicted to be more muted on Uranus, despite the planet’s very large obliquity. Radiative-transfer simulations demonstrate that latitude variations in hydrocarbons on both planets are potentially observable with future JWST mid-infrared spectral imaging. Our seasonal model predictions for Neptune compare well with retrieved C(2)H(2) and C(2)H(6) abundances from spatially resolved ground-based observations (no such observations currently exist for Uranus), suggesting that stratospheric circulation — which was not included in these models — may have little influence on the large-scale meridional hydrocarbon distributions on Neptune, unlike the situation on Jupiter and Saturn.

Numerous Solar System atmospheres possess photochemically generated hazes, including the characteristic organic hazes of Titan and Pluto. Haze particles substantially impact atmospheric temperature structures and may provide organic material to the surface of a world, potentially affecting its habitability. We present retrievals of the vertical temperature profile of Jupiter's high-latitudes from IRTF-TEXES measurements acquired on December 10-11th 2014 and April 30th-May 1st 2016. Over this time range, 1-mbar temperatures in Jupiter's northern and southern auroral regions exhibited independent evolution. The northern auroral hotspot exhibited negligible net change in temperature at 1 mbar and its longitudinal position remained fixed at 180° W (System III) whereas, the southern auroral hotspot exhibited a net increase in temperature of 11.1 ± 5.2 K at 0.98 mbar and its longitudinal orientation moved west by approximately 30° . This southern auroral stratospheric temperature increase might be related to: 1) near-contemporaneous brightening of the southern auroral ultraviolet/near-infrared H3+ emission measured by the Juno spacecraft and 2) an increase in the solar dynamical pressure in the preceding 3 days. We therefore suggest 1-mbar temperatures in the southern auroral region might be modified by higher-energy charged particle precipitation.

We present new 3.6 and 4.5 micron secondary eclipse measurements for five cool (less than approximately 1000 K) transiting gas giant planets: HAT-P-15b, HAT-P-17b, HAT-P-18b, HAT-P-26b, and WASP-69b. We detect eclipses in at least one bandpass for all planets except HAT-P-15b. We confirm and refine the orbital eccentricity of HAT-P-17b, which is also the only planet in our sample with a known outer companion. We compare our measured eclipse depths in these two bands, which are sensitive to the relative abundances of methane versus carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, respectively, to predictions from 1D atmosphere models for each planet. For planets with hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and equilibrium temperatures cooler than approximately 1000 K, this ratio should vary as a function of both atmospheric metallicity and the carbon-to-oxygen ratio. For HAT-P-26b, our observations are in good agreement with the low atmospheric metallicity inferred from transmission spectroscopy. We find that all four of the planets with detected eclipses are best matched by models with relatively efficient circulation of energy to the nightside. We see no evidence for a solar-system-like correlation between planet mass and atmospheric metallicity, but instead identify a potential (1.9 sigma) correlation between the inferred methane/(carbon monoxide + carbon dioxide) ratio and stellar metallicity. Our ability to characterize this potential trend is limited by the relatively large uncertainties in the stellar metallicity values. Our observations provide a first look at the brightness of these planets at wavelengths accessible to the James Webb Space Telescope, which will be able to resolve individual methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide bands and provide much stronger constraints on their atmospheric compositions., 24 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

On Neptune, carbon monoxide and phosphine are disequilibrium species, and their abundance profiles can provide insights into interior processes and the external space environment. Here we use Herschel/SPIRE (Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver) observations from 14.9–51.5 cm-1 to obtain abundances from multiple CO and PH3 spectral features. For CO, we find that nine CO bands can be simultaneously fitted using a step profile with a 0.22 ppm tropospheric abundance, a 1.03 ppm stratospheric abundance, and a step transition pressure of 0.11 bar near the tropopause. This is in broad agreement with previous studies. However, we also find that the CO spectral features could be fitted, to well within measurement errors, with a profile that contains no tropospheric CO for pressure levels deeper than 0.5 bar, which is our preferred interpretation. This differs from previous studies that have assumed CO is well mixed throughout the troposphere, which would require an internal CO source to explain and a high O/H enrichment. Our interpretation removes the requirement for extreme interior O/H enrichment in thermochemical models and can finally reconcile D/H and CO measurements. If true, the lack of lower tropospheric CO would imply a decrease in Neptune's interior water content, favouring a silicate-rich instead of an ice-rich interior. This would be consistent with a protoplanetary ice source with a similar D/H ratio to the current solar system comet population. The upper tropospheric and stratospheric CO at pressures less than 0.5 bar could then be entirely externally sourced from a giant impact as suggested by Lellouch et al.(2005). We also derive a 3-σ upper limit for PH3 of 1.1 ppb at 0.4–0.8 bar. This is the most stringent upper limit to-date and is entirely consistent with predictions from a simple photochemical model.

Since its discovery in the aurorae of Jupiter ~30 years ago, the H$_{3}^{+}$ ion has served as an invaluable probe of giant planet upper atmospheres. However, the vast majority of monitoring of planetary H$_{3}^{+}$ radiation has followed from observations that rely on deriving parameters from column-integrated paths through the emitting layer. Here, we investigate the effects of density and temperature gradients along such paths on the measured H$_{3}^{+}$ spectrum and its resulting interpretation. In a non-isothermal atmosphere, H$_{3}^{+}$ column densities retrieved from such observations are found to represent a lower limit, reduced by 20% or more from the true atmospheric value. Global simulations of Uranus' ionosphere reveal that measured H$_{3}^{+}$ temperature variations are often attributable to well-understood solar zenith angle effects rather than indications of real atmospheric variability. Finally, based on these insights, a preliminary method of deriving vertical temperature structure is demonstrated at Jupiter using model reproductions of electron density and H$_{3}^{+}$ measurements. Photochemistry induced by stellar UV flux should produce haze particles in exoplanet atmospheres. Recent observations indicate that haze and/or cloud layers exist in the atmospheres of exoplanets. However, photochemical processes in exoplanetary atmospheres remain largely unknown. We performed laboratory experiments with the PHAZER chamber to simulate haze formation in a range of exoplanet atmospheres (hydrogen-rich, water-rich, and carbon dioxide-rich at 300, 400, and 600 K), and observed the gas phase compositional change (the destruction of the initial gas and the formation of new gas species) during these experiments with mass spectrometer. The mass spectra reveal that distinct chemical processes happen in the experiments as a function of different initial gas mixture and different energy sources (plasma or UV photons). We find that organic gas products and O2 are photochemically generated in the experiments, demonstrating that photochemical production is one of the abiotic sources for these potential biosignatures. Multiple simulated atmospheres produce organics and O2 simultaneously, which suggests that even the co-presence of organics and O2 could be false positive biosignature. From the gas phase composition changes, we identify potential precursors (C2H2, HCN, CH2NH, HCHO, etc.) for haze formation, among which complex reactions can take place and produce larger molecules. We present an analysis of IRTF-TEXES spectra of Jupiter’s mid-to-high latitudes in order to test the hypothesis that the CH4 homopause altitude is higher in Jupiter’s auroral regions compared to elsewhere on the planet. A family of photochemical models, based on Moses & Poppe (2017), were computed with a range of CH4 homopause altitudes. Adopting each model in turn, the observed TEXES spectra of H2 S(1), CH4, and CH3 emission measured on 2019 April 16 and August 20 were inverted, the vertical temperature profile was allowed to vary, and the quality of the fit to the spectra was used to discriminate between models. At latitudes equatorward of Jupiter’s main auroral ovals (>62°S, 4 homopause altitude of km, whereas outside the main oval at the same latitude, a 1σ upper limit of 370 km was derived. Our interpretation is that a portion of energy from the magnetosphere is deposited as heat within the main oval, which drives vertical winds and/or higher rates of turbulence and transports CH4 and its photochemical by-products to higher altitudes. Inside the northern main auroral oval, a factor of ∼3 increase in CH3 abundance was also required to fit the spectra. This could be due to uncertainties in the photochemical modeling or an additional source of CH3 production in Jupiter’s auroral regions.

H 3 + has been detected at all of the solar system giant planets aside from Neptune. Current observational upper limits imply that there is far less H 3 + emission at Neptune than rudimentary modelling would suggest. Here, we explore via modelling a range of atmospheric conditions in order to find some that could be consistent with observational constraints. In particular, we consider that the upper atmosphere might be much cooler than it was during the 1989 Voyager 2 encounter, and we examine the impact of an enhanced influx of external material that could act to reduce H 3 + density. Resulting ionosphere models that are consistent with existing H 3 + observational constraints have an exospheric temperature of 450 K or less, 300 K lower than the Voyager 2 value. Alternatively, if a topside CO influx of 2 × 10 8 cm −2 s −1 is imposed, the upper atmospheric temperature can be higher, up to 550 K. The potential cooling of Neptune’s atmosphere is relevant for poorly understood giant planet thermospheric energetics, and would also impact aerobreaking manoeuvers for any future spacecraft. Such a large CO influx, if present, could imply Triton is a very active moon with prominent atmospheric escape, and/or that Neptune’s rings significantly modify its upper atmosphere, and the introduction of so much exogenic material would complicate interpretation of the origin of species observed in Neptune’s lower atmosphere. Characterizing the atmospheres of extrasolar planets is the new frontier in exoplanetary science. The last two decades of exoplanet discoveries have revealed that exoplanets are very common and extremely diverse in their orbital and bulk properties. We now enter a new era as we begin to investigate the chemical diversity of exoplanets, their atmospheric and interior processes, and their formation conditions. Recent developments in the field have led to unprecedented advancements in our understanding of atmospheric chemistry of exoplanets and the implications for their formation conditions. We review these developments in the present work. We review in detail the theory of atmospheric chemistry in all classes of exoplanets discovered to date, from highly irradiated gas giants, ice giants, and super-Earths, to directly imaged giant planets at large orbital separations. We then review the observational detections of chemical species in exoplanetary atmospheres of these various types using different methods, including transit spectroscopy, doppler spectroscopy, and direct imaging. In addition to chemical detections, we discuss the advances in determining chemical abundances in these atmospheres and how such abundances are being used to constrain exoplanetary formation conditions and migration mechanisms. Finally, we review recent theoretical work on the atmospheres of habitable exoplanets, followed by a discussion of future outlook of the field., Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews. New observing capabilities coming online over the next few years will provide opportunities for characterization of exoplanet atmospheres. However, clouds/hazes could be present in the atmospheres of many exoplanets, muting the amplitude of spectral features. We use laboratory simulations to explore photochemical haze formation in H2-rich exoplanet atmospheres at 800 K with metallicity either 100 or 1000 times solar. We find that haze particles are produced in both simulated atmospheres with small particle size (20–140 nm) and relatively low production rate (2.4 × 10−5 to 9.7 × 10−5 mg cm−3 hr−1), but the particle size and production rate is dependent on the initial gas mixtures and the energy sources used in the simulation experiments. The gas phase mass spectra show that complex chemical processes happen in these atmospheres and generate new gas products that can further react to form larger molecules and solid haze particles. Two H2-rich atmospheres with similar C/O ratios (∼0.5) yield different haze particle size, haze production rate, and gas products, suggesting that both the elemental abundances and their bonding environments in an atmosphere can significantly affect the photochemistry. There is no methane (CH4) in our initial gas mixtures, although CH4 is often believed to be required to generate organic hazes. However, haze production rates from our experiments with different initial gas mixtures indicate that CH4 is neither required to generate organic hazes nor necessary to promote the organic haze formation. The variety and relative yield of the gas products indicate that CO and N2 enrich chemical reactions in H2-rich atmospheres.

Very little experimental work has been done to explore the properties of photochemical hazes formed in atmospheres with very different compositions or temperatures than that of the outer solar system or of early Earth. With extrasolar planet discoveries now numbering thousands, this untapped phase space merits exploration. This study presents measured chemical properties of haze particles produced in laboratory analogues of exoplanet atmospheres. We used very high resolution mass spectrometry to measure the chemical components of solid particles produced in atmospheric chamber experiments. Many complex molecular species with general chemical formulas C$_w$H$_x$N$_y$O$_z$ were detected. We detect molecular formulas of prebiotic interest in the data, including those for the monosaccharide glyceraldehyde, a variety of amino acids and nucleotide bases, and several sugar derivatives. Additionally, the experimental exoplanetary haze analogues exhibit diverse solubility characteristics, which provide insight into the possibility of further chemical or physical alteration of photochemical hazes in super-Earth and mini-Neptune atmospheres. UV radiation can induce photochemical processes in exoplanet atmospheres and produce haze particles. Recent observations suggest that haze and/or cloud layers could be present in the upper atmospheres of exoplanets. Haze particles play an important role in planetary atmospheres and may provide a source of organic material to the surface which may impact the origin or evolution of life. However, very little information is known about photochemical processes in cool, high-metallicity exoplanetary atmospheres. Previously, we investigated haze formation and particle size distribution in laboratory atmosphere simulation experiments using AC plasma as the energy source. Here, we use UV photons to initiate the chemistry rather than the AC plasma, since photochemistry driven by UV radiation is important for understanding exoplanet atmospheres. We present photochemical haze formation in current UV experiments, we investigated a range of atmospheric metallicities (100x, 1000x, and 10000x solar metallicity) at three temperatures (300 K, 400 K, and 600 K). We find that photochemical hazes are generated in all simulated atmospheres with temperature-dependent production rates: the particles produced in each metallicity group decrease as the temperature increases. The images taken with atomic force microscopy show the particle size (15-190 nm) varies with temperature and metallicity. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) presents the opportunity to transform our understanding of planets and the origins of life by revealing the atmospheric compositions, structures, and dynamics of transiting exoplanets in unprecedented detail. However, the high-precision, time-series observations required for such investigations have unique technical challenges, and prior experience with other facilities indicates that there will be a steep learning curve when JWST becomes operational. In this paper we describe the science objectives and detailed plans of the Transiting Exoplanet Community Early Release Science (ERS) Program, which is a recently approved program for JWST observations early in Cycle 1. The goal of this project, for which the obtained data will have no exclusive access period, is to accelerate the acquisition and diffusion of technical expertise for transiting exoplanet observations with JWST, while also providing a compelling set of representative datasets that will enable immediate scientific breakthroughs. The Transiting Exoplanet Community ERS Program will exercise the time-series modes of all four JWST instruments that have been identified as the consensus highest priorities, observe the full suite of transiting planet characterization geometries (transits, eclipses, and phase curves), and target planets with host stars that span an illustrative range of brightnesses. The observations in this program were defined through an inclusive and transparent process that had participation from JWST instrument experts and international leaders in transiting exoplanet studies. Community engagement in the project will be centered on a two-phase Data Challenge that culminates with the delivery of planetary spectra, time-series instrument performance reports, and open-source data analysis toolkits in time to inform the agenda for Cycle 2 of the JWST mission., Comment: PASP in press

Ablation of interplanetary dust supplies oxygen to the upper atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Using recent dynamical model predictions for the dust influx rates to the giant planets (Poppe, A.R.~et al.~[2016], Icarus 264, 369), we calculate the ablation profiles and investigate the subsequent coupled oxygen-hydrocarbon neutral photochemistry in the stratospheres of these planets. We find that dust grains from the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt, Jupiter-family comets, and Oort-cloud comets supply an effective oxygen influx rate of 1.0$^{+2.2}_{-0.7} \, \times \, 10^7$ O atoms cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ to Jupiter, 7.4$^{+16}_{-5.1} \, \times 10^4$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ to Saturn, 8.9$^{+19}_{-6.1} \, \times \, 10^4$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ to Uranus, and 7.5$^{+16}_{-5.1} \, \times \, 10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ to Neptune. The fate of the ablated oxygen depends in part on the molecular/atomic form of the initially delivered products, and on the altitude at which it was deposited. The dominant stratospheric products are CO, H$_2$O, and CO$_2$, which are relatively stable photochemically. Model-data comparisons suggest that interplanetary dust grains deliver an important component of the external oxygen to Jupiter and Uranus but fall far short of the amount needed to explain the CO abundance currently seen in the middle stratospheres of Saturn and Neptune. Our results are consistent with the theory that all of the giant planets have experienced large cometary impacts within the last few hundred years. Our results also suggest that the low background H$_2$O abundance in Jupiter's stratosphere is indicative of effective conversion of meteoric oxygen to CO during or immediately after the ablation process -- photochemistry alone cannot efficiently convert the H$_2$O into CO on the giant planets., accepted in Icarus
