Myocardial injury (MI), defined by troponin elevation, has been associated with increased mortality and adverse outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but the role of this biomarker as a risk predictor remains unclear. Data from adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were recorded prospectively. A multiple logistic regression model was used to quantify associations of all variables with in-hospital mortality, including the calculation of odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CI). Troponin measurement was performed in 1476 of 4628 included patients, and MI was detected in 353 patients, with a prevalence of 23.9%; [95% CI, 21.8–26.1%]. The total in-hospital mortality rate was 10.9% [95% CI, 9.8–12.0%]. The mortality was much higher among patients with MI than among those without MI, with a prevalence of 22.7% [95% CI, 18.5–27.3%] vs. 5.5% [95% CI, 4.3–7.0%] and increased with each troponin level. After adjustment for age and comorbidities, the model revealed that the mortality risk was greater for patients with MI [OR = 2.99; 95% CI, 2.06–4.36%], and for those who did not undergo troponin measurement [OR = 2.2; 95% CI, 1.62–2.97%], compared to those without MI. Our data support the role of troponin as an important risk predictor for these patients, capable of discriminating between those with a low or increased mortality rate. In addition, our findings suggest that this biomarker has a remarkable negative predictive value in COVID-19.

Introduction: The correct breathing process is through the nasal route, since it provides that the air during aspiration is filtered, humidified and heated, thus conditioning the lungs for gas exchange to occur. Allergic processes or other forms of affections can lead to the obstruction of the passage of air through the nose, leading the body to make an alternative adaptation for the passage of air to occur through the mouth. A person who uses the mouth to breathe is called a mouth breather. Once this adaptive process occurs, as a way to compensate for this alternative airway, the body promotes a series of alterations in several segments of the body, such as changes in the postural, respiratory, behavioral and stomatognathic systems. Several techniques are used to treat the musculoskeletal dysfunctions presented by mouth breathers. Objective: to analyze how physiotherapy can contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of mouth breathing children and to find out which are the most effective treatments. Methods: a search of data in the literature was carried out by consulting the following electronic databases: Scielo, Bireme, Pub Med, Lilacs Google Scholar, as well as specialized books in the field. We excluded articles published before the year 2000. Result: Among the analyzed articles, we perceive that the treatment of mouth breathers occurs in a multidisciplinary way, since it presents changes that encompass several body and systemic segments. Among the professionals involved in the rehabilitation process, we highlight the role of physiotherapists. Conclusion: the physiotherapist is qualified to intervene in this pathology, with expertise in evaluation and establishment of the best treatment program, with physiotherapeutic conduits, allowing an improvement in respiratory patterns. Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic limitation of airflow associated with a variety of pathological pulmonary changes. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs seek to improve several aspects of patients with COPD. Regarding the use of physical conditioning in approaches to COPD, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is defined by high intensity interval sessions with rest sessions. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of HIIT in patients with COPD. Materials and methods: A narrative review of the literature was made through the Virtual Health Library databases (LILACS, MEDLINE) and PEDro, using the descriptors High Intensity Interval Training, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Rehabilitation, in order to obtain a synthesis on the insertion of HIIT in the pulmonary rehabilitation of patients with COPD. Articles that addressed HIIT in individuals with COPD were included and those that did not correspond to the topic were excluded. Conclusion: In spite of the need for further studies on this topic, HIIT can be used in the pulmonary rehabilitation of patients with COPD with moderate to severe airflow limitation. Introduction: Early rehabilitation of patients with strokes is an important component in interdisciplinarity within the hospital environment since, in addition to other interventions. they culminate in early mobilization by removing patients from their beds as soon as possible. Guidelines recommend the start of motor physiotherapy as early as possible, although the results of published studies are still inconclusive as to the relevant benefits of these interventions. Objective: To analyze the importance of the performance of physiotherapists in the acute phase of the stroke in the hospital environment through a narrative review of the literature. Methods: to construct this narrative review, a search of data in the literature was made through consultation of the electronic databases: Scielo, Bireme, Pub Med, Lilacs Google Scholar and specialized books in the field. We excluded any articles that addressed cerebrovascular accidents in the chronic phase and those that were published before the year 2000. Results: The articles analyzed consider that physiotherapy can be considered a great ally in rehabilitation, thus reducing the risks of clinical complications by acting early in the hospital phase of the post-stroke patient. Conclusion: Through early mobilization and the relevance of physiotherapeutic intervention in the prevention of clinical complications, motor gains in the performance of daily life activities (ADLs) and quality of life (QoL) of these patients can be seen. Aortic diseases arising in Marfan syndrome (MFS), such as in aneurysms and dissections of the thoracic aorta, are related to genetic alterations in the FBN1 gene. Databases, such as Universal Mutations-FBN1, ClinVar, and The Human Gene Mutation, contain more than a thousand FBN1 mutations associated with MFS. The FBN1 gene, which encodes fibrillin-1, is responsible for the integral production of different protein domains. Possible genetic changes may lead to a weakening of blood vessels, leading to the development of aortopathies. In this study, we present the association of a novel FBN1 variant with MFS. The proband is a man who presented with ascending aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD) at 42-yr-old, which was surgically treated. Clinical investigations were performed in all family members enrolled in the study. Marfan signs were observed in the proband, daughters, and granddaughter. Direct sequencing of the FBN1 gene in the proband identified a novel truncation variant p.(Glu2019Ter), and a cascade screening was done. The variant was classified as pathogenic and causal for MFS according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) criteria and revised Ghent nosology for MFS diagnosis, respectively. Proband's daughter and granddaughter harbor the variant, however, without aortic alteration. This work reports for the first time a patient with the FBN1-p.(Glu2019Ter) variant and its association with MFS/TAAD.

Biodiesel is considered an excellent alternative to diesel derived from fossil sources, due to its renewable nature, which minimizes environmental impacts. In this research, several parameters were analyzed, such as the oil content of seeds, acidity and saponification indexes for oil extracted from different plant species, and qualitative analysis for the verification of free fatty acids in the biodiesel composition by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Four cultivars were evaluated for each specie: canola, sunflower, corn and soybean. Oil samples were submitted to the transesterification process for the production of biodiesel. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey and F significance tests for evaluation of differences between and within species. A significant difference was observed in the percentage of oil between species, sunflower (40.4% to 46.6%), Análises físico-químicas de óleos vegetais para a produção de biodiesel 131 Colloquium Exactarum, v. 7, n.2, Abr-Jun. 2015, p.130 –141. The acidity and the saponification indexes values showed no differences between and within species, indicating the good quality of the oil. The TLC analysis revealed the presence of oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids in the biodiesel synthesized from each specie.
