The climate-change-induced poleward shift of agriculture could lead to enforced deforestation of subarctic forest. Deforestation alters the microclimate and, thus, soil temperature, which is an important driver of decomposition. The consequences of land-use change on soil temperature and decomposition in temperature-limited ecosystems are not well understood. In this study, we buried tea bags together with soil temperature loggers at two depths (10 and 50 cm) in native subarctic forest soils and adjacent agricultural land in the Yukon Territory, Canada. A total of 37 plots was established on a wide range of different soils and resampled after 2 years to quantify the land-use effect on soil temperature and decomposition of fresh organic matter. Average soil temperature over the whole soil profile was 2.1 ± 1.0 and 2.0 ± 0.8 ∘C higher in cropland and grassland soils compared to forest soils. Cumulative degree days (the annual sum of daily mean temperatures > 0 ∘C) increased significantly by 773 ± 243 (cropland) and 670 ± 285 (grassland). Litter decomposition was enhanced by 2.0 ± 10.4 % and 7.5 ± 8.6 % in cropland topsoil and subsoil compared to forest soils, but no significant difference in decomposition was found between grassland and forest soils. Increased litter decomposition may be attributed not only to increased temperature but also to management effects, such as irrigation of croplands. The results suggest that deforestation-driven temperature changes exceed the soil temperature increase that has already been observed in Canada due to climate change. Deforestation thus amplifies the climate–carbon feedback by increasing soil warming and organic matter decomposition.

Telomere dynamics are linked with both cellular and organismal senescence, and life history, individual quality and health. Telomere dynamics, particularly telomere length, have therefore garnered much research interest in evolutionary biology. To examine the evolution of telomere length, it is important to quantify its heritability, the proportion of total variation explained by additive genetic effects. Many studies have quantified telomere length heritability, but estimates are varied, and no general conclusion has been drawn. Additionally, it is unclear whether biological and methodological factors influence telomere length heritability estimates. We present the first meta-analysis of telomere length heritability, using 104 estimates from 43 studies over 18 vertebrate species. We calculated an overall mean heritability and examined how estimates varied by study, phylogeny, species-specific ecology, environmental setting, age at sampling, laboratory methods, statistical methods, sex and repeated measurements. Overall heritability was moderate (44.9%, 95% CI: 25.2-64.7%), and there was considerable heterogeneity in heritability estimates, in particular among studies and estimates. Laboratory method influenced heritability estimates, with in-gel hybridization TRF yielding higher heritabilities than qPCR and Southern blot TRF. There was also an effect from statistical method, with twin-based and SNP-based estimates lower than correlation-based or pedigree-based estimates. Our results highlight an overall heritable basis of telomere length, and we recommend future research on a wider range of taxa, and the use of variance-partitioning methods with relatedness or SNP data over correlation methods to minimize heritability estimation bias.

Subarctic regions are particularly affected by global warming. As vegetation periods lengthen, boreal forests could gradually be converted into agricultural land. How land use alters the susceptibility of soil organic matter decomposition to rising temperatures or how changes in nutrient availability, such as nitrogen (N) fertilisation, affect carbon (C) cycling is unknown. Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) defines how much of the decomposed soil organic carbon is directed to growth or lost to the atmosphere. Here, we investigated the response of CUE (24 h) and soil organic matter decomposition (50 days) to + 10 °C warming and N addition in three subarctic soils derived from paired plots (forest, grassland, cropland) in the Yukon, Canada. Contrary to our literature-based expectations, boreal forest soils did not demonstrate the most sensitive response to warming and N addition. Temperature sensitivity was not affected by land-use type. In contrast to a generally assumed decline, short-term warming increased CUE by + 30%, which was positively correlated with microbial growth. N addition reduced overall CUE by − 7%, in contrast to the expectation that CUE would rise due to the alleviation of nutrient limitations. The response to N addition was negatively correlated with the ratio of fungi to bacteria, and presumably depended on the prevailing N-fertilisation regime. The temperature sensitivity of microbial metabolism was driven by site-specific parameters rather than by land-use type. Our results indicate that it may not be necessary to consider land use-specific temperature sensitivities when modelling soil organic carbon dynamics under future climate conditions.

The question of why females engage in extra-pair behaviours is long-standing in evolutionary biology. One suggestion is that these behaviours are maintained through pleiotropic effects on male extra-pair behaviors (genes controlling extra-pair reproduction are shared between sexes, but only beneficial to one sex, in this case, males). However, for this to evolve extra-pair reproduction must be both heritable and positively genetically correlated between sexes. Previous studies have suggested low heritability with no evidence for between-sex genetic correlations in extra-pair reproduction. However, these have not considered indirect genetic effects (derived from the behaviour of others, IGEs) from the social partner, the influence of the social partner’s genotype on the phenotype of an individual, despite the potential of IGEs to uncover hidden heritable variation. Using data from a closed house sparrow population with a genetic pedigree spanning two decades, we tested the influence of social partner IGEs on heritable variation and genetic correlation estimates of extra-pair reproduction. We found that the inclusion of IGEs resulted in larger heritable genetic variance for both male and female extra-pair heritability. While IGEs did not change between-sex genetic correlations, we found they reduced uncertainty in those estimates. Future studies should consider the effect of IGEs on the mechanisms of sex specific extra-pair reproduction.

The question of why socially monogamous females engage in extra-pair behaviour is long-standing in evolutionary biology. Recent theoretical work has moved away from the indirect-benefits hypothesis to explain female extra-pair behaviours, instead favouring suggestions that they are the result of pleiotropic effects. That is, a trait under strong positive selection in either or both sexes are genetically linked to another, often unrelated, trait. For example, where genes beneficial to female fecundity (contributing to within-pair solicitation of her social partner) are linked with extra-pair behaviour (soliciting copulations from extra-pair males). Here, we test two predictions from this hypothesis: We test the prediction that female divorce, measured from the number of social mates within a given year, is linked with (1) the number of extra-pair males and (2) the proportion of her offspring that are extra-pair. Our results suggest that females who frequently divorce social partners are more likely to produce extra-pair offspring than those who maintain social monogamy. However, by contrast, those females do not also have a higher proportion of extra-pair offspring. The number of broods initiated was also positively correlated with extra-pair males, probably through increased opportunity for extra-pair males to sire offspring over a longer breeding season. Our results provide an empirical example of a behavioural trait, beneficial to female fecundity, that is linked with extra-pair behaviour. These empirical results support the intrasexual pleiotropy hypothesis as a driver of female extra-pair behaviour.

The efficiency by which soil microbes direct metabolised carbon to their growth, i.e. the microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE), is hypothesised to be driven by soil pH, nutrient stoichiometry and the microbial community composition (e.g. Fungi-to-Bacteria ratio). Despite extensive research it remains difficult to identify general trends in how these drivers affect CUE and results of individual studies often point in different directions. To unravel general trends, we aggregated a unique data set of samples analysed using the 18O-labelling technique - all derived from the same laboratory - to gain deeper insights into the relationship between CUE and pH, CN ratio and the relative abundance of domains (based on 16S and ITS gene copy numbers by qPCR). To date, the growing data set comprises 685 observations of 18O-CUE, including samples from 41 individual sites under three different land use types (forest, managed grassland, cropland) from tropical to subarctic climate. A Random Forest model and a linear mixed-effects model approach were used to analyse the data. Preliminary results on a filtered and aggregated subset (n= 221; aggregated to reduce the heterogeneity of the data set structure) suggest that the CUE is strongly dependent on soil pH, following a U-shaped curve. The relationship between CUE and pH was found negative for pH < 5.5 and positive for pH ≥ 6.5, while overall the CUE was found to be negatively correlated to soil C:N ratio. Additional data on climate (MAT, MAP), soil texture, and soil microbial community will complement the analysis.

Background Sustainable agriculture seeks to optimize the application of nitrogen (N) fertilizers to reduce adverse economic and ecological effects. Crop diversification has been proposed to increase the efficiency of N fertilization. An open question is how the soil microbiome responds to these beneficial practices. Methods In a field study we investigated the effects of mineral N fertilizer with a 0-control, a conventional amount of 150 kg N ha−1 and an excessive application of 250 kg N ha−1 on the soil microbiome within a diversified cropping system with oil radish and undersown ryegrass over a period of 2.5 years and a non-diversified control, both in rotation of potato, winter rye and maize. Results N-fertilizations and crop rotations altered the pH, but differences were less pronounced with the diversified system. Compared to the crop species and season, N fertilization and crop diversification had less influence on the abundance of soil bacteria, archaea and fungi. The crop diversification showed a much stronger effect on archaeal than on bacterial or fungal abundances, while the microbial carbon use efficiency correlated strongly with bacterial abundance. At the end of the growing seasons, crop diversification increased prokaryotic richness and Shannon diversity in response to N addition, with a greater increase in the conventional N. At conventional N supply, prokaryotic co-occurrence networks revealed a much denser and complex structure in the diversified system. Conclusions The diversified cropping system under conventional N application rates showed positive effects on the prokaryotic soil microbiome by increasing their richness, Shannon diversity, and promoting a more elaborated network structure.

Telomeres are a popular biomarker of senescence, as telomere dynamics are linked with survival and lifespan. However, the evolutionary potential of telomere dynamics, and the selection pattern that gives rise to senescence, are not well known. To better understand this, it is necessary to quantify genetic variation in telomere length, and how such variation changes with age. Here, we analysed a longitudinal dataset (2,156 samples from 1,267 individuals across 15 years) from a wild, insular house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population with complete life-history and genetic relatedness data. Using a series of ‘animal’ models, we confirmed that telomere length (TL): (1) changes with age, reflecting senescence in this population. We then showed that (2) TL is repeatable (15.7%, 95% CrI: 10.2–21.0%) and heritable (14.0%, 95% CrI: 8.7–19.5%); and, for the first time in the wild, (3) that TL shows a genotype-by-age interaction, meaning that genotypes differ in their rate of TL change, where additive genetic variance increases at older ages. Our findings provide empirical evidence from a wild population that supports hypotheses explaining the evolution of senescence, and highlights the importance of telomere dynamics as a key biomarker of body physiology for the evolution of senescence.

Agriculture is likely to expand poleward with climate change, encouraging deforestation for agriculture in subarctic regions, which alters soil physical, chemical and biological properties and potentially affects microbial metabolic efficiency. Deciphering how and by which mechanisms land-use change affects microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) will enable the development of mitigation strategies to alleviate C losses. We assessed CUE using 18O-labelled water in a paired-plot approach on soils collected from 19 farms across the subarctic region of Yukon, Canada, comprising 14 pairs of forest-to-grassland conversion and 15 pairs of forest-to-cropland conversion. Microbial CUE significantly increased following conversion to grassland and cropland. Land-use conversion resulted in a lower estimated abundance of fungi, while the archaeal abundance increased. Interestingly, structural equation modelling revealed that increases in CUE were mediated by a rise in soil pH and a decrease in soil C:N ratio rather than by shifts in microbial community composition, i.e. the ratio of fungi, bacteria and archaea. Our findings indicate a direct control of abiotic factors on microbial CUE via improved nutrient availability and facilitated conditions for microbial growth. Overall, this implies that to a certain extent CUE can be managed to achieve a more efficient build-up of stabilised soil organic C (SOC), as reflected in increased mineral-associated organic C under agricultural land use. These insights may also help constrain SOC models that generally struggle to predict the effects of deforestation, something that is likely to take place more frequently in the subarctic.

Pediatric stroke is a condition that often results in life-long motor, cognitive, or sensory deficits for children. The purpose of this focused review is to compile the most recent literature on pediatric stroke neuromotor interventions and summarize evidence for use by rehabilitation providers and researchers. Terms including stroke, pediatric, and neuromotor were searched with appropriate MeSH terms. Information was collected regarding interventions conducted and outcome measures used for each article. Interventions and outcome measures were organized based on ICF components (Body Structure and Function, Activity, Participation, and Environmental Factors). 16 articles were included after full-text screens. From these 16 articles, a large majority of them included some form of neuromodulation as a part of intervention. Results identified a potentially problematic gap between domains addressed by interventions and measured by outcomes, with a need to include more expansive outcome measures in research studies. There are several areas of potential growth in pediatric stroke literature. Research studies should be precise when describing included samples. As interventions for pediatric stroke shift toward neuromodulation and other neurologic treatments, there is a need for well-defined populations, both clinically in the community as well as in research studies. There is also a need for US guidelines for rehabilitation after pediatric stroke. Overall, the trend in the literature seems to suggest that combining some form of neuromodulatory technique with existing recommended rehabilitation technique (ex: CIMT) may promote overall recovery for children after stroke, though further research is needed.

Fitness is at the core of evolutionary theory, but it is difficult to measure accurately. One way to measure long-term fitness is by calculating the individual’s reproductive value, which represents the expected number of allele copies an individual passes on to distant future generations. However, this metric of fitness is scarcely used because the estimation of individual’s reproductive value requires long-term pedigree data, which is rarely available in wild populations where following individuals from birth to death is often impossible. Wild study systems therefore use short-term fitness metrics as proxies, such as the number of offspring produced. This study obtained three frequently used short-term proxies for fitness obtained at different offspring life stages (eggs, hatchlings, fledglings and recruits), and compared their ability to predict reproductive values derived from the genetic pedigree of a wild passerine bird population. We used twenty years of precise field observations and a near-complete genetic pedigree to calculate reproductive success, individual growth rate and de-lifed fitness as lifetime fitness measures, and as annual de-lifed fitness. We compared the power of these metrics to predict reproductive values and lineage survival to the end of the study period. The three short-term fitness proxies predict the reproductive values and lineage survival only when measured at the recruit stage. There were no significant differences between the different fitness proxies at the same offspring stages in predicting the reproductive values and lineage survival. Annual fitness at one year old predicted reproductive values equally well as lifetime de-lifed fitness. However, none of the short-term fitness proxies was strongly associated with the reproductive values. In summary, the commonly short-term fitness proxies capture long-term fitness with intermediate accuracy at best, if measured at recruitment stage. As lifetime fitness measured at recruit stage and annual fitness in the first year of life were the best proxies of long-term fitness, we encourage their future use.

Tropical soils often contain less soil organic C (SOC) and microbial biomass C (MBC) than temperate soils and, thus, exhibit lower soil fertility. The addition of plant residues and N fertilizers can improve soil fertility, which might be reflected by microbial C use efficiency (CUE) and functional diversity. A 42-day incubation study was carried out, adding leaf litter of the C4 plant finger millet (Eleusine coracana Gaertn.) and inorganic 15N fertilizer. The aim was to investigate amendment effects on CUE and functional diversity in a tropical Nitisol and a temperate Luvisol. At day 42, 28% of the millet litter-derived C (C4) added was mineralised to CO2C4 in the temperate Luvisol and only 18% in the tropical Nitisol, averaging all N treatments. In contrast, none of the different fractions used for calculating CUE values, i.e. CO2C4, MBC4, microbial residue C4, and particulate organic matter C4, differed between the soils in the N0 (no N addition) treatment. CUE values considering microbial residues varied around 0.63, regardless of soil type and sampling day, which needs further evaluation. Millet litter increased autochthonous SOC-derived CO2C3 production, but N addition did not. This priming effect was apparently not caused by N mining. The respiratory response to most substrates added by multi-substrate-induced respiration (MSIR) and, thus, functional diversity was higher in the Luvisol than in the Nitisol. Millet litter had positive and N addition negative effects on the functional diversity of Nitisol, indicating that MSIR is a useful tool for evaluating soil fertility.

Many falls in older people occur at home, and home hazards (HOHA) are often involved. Fear of falling (FOF) is a frequent and serious consequence of falls. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of an autonomous reduction of HOHA on FOF.In this single-blinded, prospective cohort study design, the inclusion criteria were female sex, age ≥60 years, no known dementia, community-dwelling, and written informed consent. Using a 54-item room-by-room checklist, the participants identified and autonomously reduced as many HOHA as possible, within 14 days. The FOF was measured using a dichotomous scale (D-FOF) and the Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I). Logistic regression models were used to identify the predictors of a substantial reduction of HOHA (≥50%) and FOF (≥25%).A total of 782 women fulfilled the inclusion criteria, and 431 (60.5%) returned the complete checklist on time. The mean age was 72.5 [SD 7.1] years. 43.8% of participants reduced ≥50% of the HOHA. The D-FOF (odds ratio 22.4 [95% confidence interval 11.0-45.3]), age ≥ 75 years (14.1 [7.5-26.4]), polypharmacy (3.0 [1.4-6.5]), and assumed improvability of housing conditions (2.4 [1.3-4.3]) were identified as predictors for substantially reducing HOHA with an area under the curve of 0.91. The initial FES-I score decreased from 24.5 to 19.5. Prior to the intervention, 53.1% showed a high FOF (22 FES-I scores). Of these, 70.7% participants reduced their high FOF to low FOF. 29.2% of all participants reduced FOF ≥25% postinterventionally, associated with a substantial reduction in HOHA (3.5 [2.2-5.7]) as the strongest independent factor in the multiple logistic regression analysis.The use of a self-administered checklist led to a substantial reduction of HOHA and subsequently to a clinically relevant reduction of FOF in older community-dwelling women. Autonomous competence of older people should be considered when developing fall prevention strategies.

Given the highly variable clinical phenotype of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a deeper analysis of the host genetic contribution to severe COVID-19 is important to improve our understanding of underlying disease mechanisms. Here, we describe an extended GWAS meta-analysis of a well-characterized cohort of 3,260 COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure and 12,483 population controls from Italy, Spain, Norway and Germany/Austria, including stratified analyses based on age, sex and disease severity, as well as targeted analyses of chromosome Y haplotypes, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region and the SARS-CoV-2 peptidome. By inversion imputation, we traced a reported association at 17q21.31 to a highly pleiotropic ∼0.9-Mb inversion polymorphism and characterized the potential effects of the inversion in detail. Like many bird species associated with agricultural habitats in the UK, the Twite Linaria flavirostris has undergone severe declines over recent decades due to habitat degradation, with populations in England, Wales and Ireland now restricted to a few small pockets. However, the demographic drivers of these declines are still largely unresolved. We estimated the survival of Twite from a small population at the southernmost edge of the English range in Derbyshire using capture-mark-recapture data from 2016–2019. Annual apparent survival for juveniles (0.14-0.34) was lower than for adults (0.29-0.56) and less than that of other Cardueline finches. Our results suggest that low juvenile survival may be one demographic driver underpinning the recent decline of the Derbyshire Twite population, although we also cannot rule out the possibility that differences in emigration of juveniles and adults from the population also contribute to the observed age-specific apparent survival rates.

The best documented method to decrease predation of breeding seabirds by gulls are culling regimes; however, studies on the effectiveness of this method show ambiguous results. Here we tested an alternative method, using bamboo canes erected in four breeding sites of Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea as a gull‐deterrent. Although we found fewer predation attempts in the caned areas than in the control areas, canes did not reduce the probability of predation success per attempt. This pilot study documents that the use of canes as a conservation strategy to reduce gull predation is promising, economic and simple, and is thus probably a versatile tool for conservation managers.

Offspring of older parents in many species display decreased longevity, a faster ageing rate and lower fecundity than offspring born to younger parents. Biomarkers, such as telomeres, that tend to shorten as individual age, may provide insight into the mechanisms of parental age effects. Parental age could determine telomere length either through inheritance of shortened telomeres or through indirect effects, such as variation in parental care with parent ages, which in turn might lead to variation in offspring telomere length. There is no current consensus as to the heritability of telomere length, and the direction and extent of parental age effects however. To address this, here we experimentally investigate how parental age is associated with telomere length at two time points in early life in a captive population of house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We experimentally separated parental age from sex effects by allowing the parent birds to only mate with young, or old partners. We found that telomere length of the offspring increased between the age of 0.5 and 3 months at the group and individual level, which has been reported previously predominantly in non-avian taxa. We further show that older fathers produced daughters with a greater early-life increase in telomere length, supporting sex-specific inheritance, and or sex-specific non-genetic effects. Overall, our results highlight the need for more studies testing early-life telomere dynamics and sex-specific heritability of telomere length.

Global warming is accelerating the decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM). When predicting the net SOM dynamics in response to warming, there are considerable uncertainties owing to experimental limitations. Long-term in situ whole-profile soil warming studies are particularly rare. This study used a long-term, naturally occurring geothermal gradient in Yukon, Canada, to investigate the warming effects on SOM in a forest ecosystem. Soils were sampled along this thermosequence which exhibited warming of up to 7.7℃; samples were collected to a depth of 80 cm and analysed for soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) content, and estimates made of SOC stock and fractions. Potential litter decomposition rates as a function of soil temperature and depth were observed for a 1-year period using buried teabags and temperature loggers. The SOC in the topsoil (0-20 cm) and subsoil (20-80 cm) responded similar to warming. A negative relationship was found between soil temperature and whole-profile SOC stocks, with a total loss of 27% between the warmest and reference plots, and a relative loss of 3%℃-1 . SOC losses were restricted to the particulate organic matter (POM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fractions with net whole-profile depletions. Losses in POM-C accounted for the largest share of the total SOC losses. In contrast to SOC, N was not lost from the soil as a result of warming, but was redistributed with a relatively large accumulation in the silt and clay fraction (+40%). This suggests an immobilization of N by microbes building up in mineral-associated organic matter. These results confirm that soil warming accelerates SOC turnover throughout the profile and C is lost in both the topsoil and subsoil. Since N stocks remained constant with warming, SOM stoichiometry changed considerably and this in turn could affect C cycling through changes in microbial metabolism.

Gamete size variationbetweenthe sexes is central to the concept of sex roles, however, to what extent gamete size variationwithinsexes relates to sex role variation remains unclear. Comparative and theoretical studies suggest that, when clutch size is invariable, female polygamy leads to a reduction of egg size, whereas increased female-female competition for mates favors early breeding. To understand whether and how breeding phenology, egg size, and mating behavior are related at the individual level, we studied the reproductive histories of 426 snowy plover females collected over 15 years. Egg size but not mating strategy were highly repeatable for individual females. Consistent with theoretical predictions, we found that polyandrous females were the earliest breeders and that early clutches contained smaller eggs than clutches initiated later, however, the latter effect was only moderate. Neither egg size nor mating behavior showed clear signs of an age-related deterioration, on the contrary, prior experience acquired either through age or local recruitment enabled females to nest early. Taken together, these results suggest that gamete size variation is not linked to female mating behavior at the individual level.Teaser TextComparative avian analyses have linked female polyandry and sex-role reversal to the production of smaller eggs: the notion being that smaller eggs allow polyandrous females to lay multiple sequential clutches quickly. Our research, however, has found that this process is more complex at the individual level. We found that females who started breeding early in the season were more likely to be polyandrous and produce smaller eggs. Experience was also found to give older and local females a competitive advantage over younger and inexperienced females vying for early breeding opportunities. Despite this, we found limited evidence that egg size reduction gives a competitive advantage in the scramble for mates. Instead, seasonal variations in egg size can be attributed to other factors, such as the survival of early-hatching chicks, resource limitations during egg production, and individual differences. We found that senescence had little impact on egg size or mating behavior. Future research should examine how seasonality, age, and mating behavior impact the reproductive fitness of males, who provide more parental care than females in many sex role reversed systems. By studying these effects in concert, we can gain a deeper understanding of sex roles in natural populations.

Do islands harbour less diverse disease communities than mainland? The island biogeography theory predicts more diverse communities on mainland than on islands due to more niches, more diverse habitats and availability of greater range of hosts. We compared bacteria prevalences of Campylobacter, Chlamydia and Salmonella in cloacal samples of a small shorebird, the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) between two island populations of Macaronesia and two mainland locations in the Iberian Peninsula. Bacteria were found in all populations but, contrary to the expectations, prevalences did not differ between islands and mainland. Females had higher prevalences than males for Salmonella and when three bacteria genera were pooled together. Bacteria infection was unrelated to bird’s body condition but females from mainland were heavier than males and birds from mainland were heavier than those from islands. Abiotic variables consistent throughout breeding sites, like high salinity that is known to inhibit bacteria growth, could explain the lack of differences in the bacteria prevalence between areas. The longitudinal study of populations is a core tool for understanding ecological and evolutionary processes. Long-term studies typically collect samples repeatedly over individual lifetimes and across generations. These samples are then analysed in batches (e.g. qPCR-plates) and clusters (i.e. group of batches) over time in the laboratory. However, these analyses are constrained by cross-classified data structures introduced biologically or through experimental design. The separation of biological variation from the confounding among-batch and among-cluster variation is crucial, yet often ignored. The commonly used approaches to structuring samples for analysis, sequential and randomisation, generate bias due to the non-independence between time of collection and the batch and cluster they are analysed in. We propose a new sample structuring strategy, called slicing, designed to separate confounding among-batch and among-cluster variation from biological variation. Through simulations we tested the statistical power and precision to detect within-individual, between-individual, year and cohort effects of this novel approach. Our slicing approach, whereby recently and previously collected samples are sequentially analysed in clusters together, enables the statistical separation of collection time and cluster effects by bridging clusters together, for which we provide a case study. Our simulations show, with reasonable slicing width and angle, similar precision and similar or greater statistical power to detect year, cohort, within- and between-individual effects when samples are sliced across batches, compared with strategies that aggregate longitudinal samples or use randomised allocation. While the best approach to analysing long-term datasets depends on the structure of the data and questions of interest, it is vital to account for confounding among-cluster and batch variation. Our slicing approach is simple to apply and creates the necessary statistical independence of batch and cluster from environmental or biological variables of interest. Crucially, it allows sequential analysis of samples and flexible inclusion of current data in later analyses without completely confounding the analysis. Our approach maximises the scientific value of every sample, as each will optimally contribute to unbiased statistical inference from the data. Slicing thereby maximises the power of growing biobanks to address important ecological, epidemiological and evolutionary questions.

The integration and synthesis of the data in different areas of science is drastically slowed and hindered by a lack of standards and networking programmes. Long-term studies of individually marked animals are not an exception. These studies are especially important as instrumental for understanding evolutionary and eco-logical processes in the wild. Furthermore, their number and global distribution provides a unique opportunity to assess the generality of patterns and to address broad-scale global issues (e.g. climate change)., To solve data integration issues and enable a new scale of ecological and evolution-ary research based on long-term studies of birds, we have created the SPI-Birds Network and Database (www.spibirds.org)—a large-scale initiative that connects data from, and researchers working on, studies of wild populations of individually recognizable (usually ringed) birds. Within year and a half since the establishment, SPI-Birds has recruited over 120 members, and currently hosts data on almost 1.5 million individual birds collected in 80 populations over 2,000 cumulative years, and counting., SPI-Birds acts as a data hub and a catalogue of studied populations. It prevents data loss, secures easy data finding, use and integration and thus facilitates collab-oration and synthesis. We provide community-derived data and meta-data stand-ards and improve data integrity guided by the principles of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR), and aligned with the existing metadata lan-guages (e.g. ecological meta-data language)., The encouraging community involvement stems from SPI-Bird's decentralized ap-proach: research groups retain full control over data use and their way of data management, while SPI-Birds creates tailored pipelines to convert each unique data format into a standard format. We outline the lessons learned, so that other communities (e.g. those working on other taxa) can adapt our successful model. Temporal variation in natural selection is predicted to strongly impact the evolution and demography of natural populations, with consequences for the rate of adaptation, evolution of plasticity, and extinction risk. Most of the theory underlying these predictions assumes a moving optimum phenotype, with predictions expressed in terms of the temporal variance and autocorrelation of this optimum. However, empirical studies seldom estimate patterns of fluctuations of an optimum phenotype, precluding further progress in connecting theory with observations. To bridge this gap, we assess the evidence for temporal variation in selection on breeding date by modeling a fitness function with a fluctuating optimum, across 39 populations of 21 wild animals, one of the largest compilations of long-term datasets with individual measurements of trait and fitness components. We find compelling evidence for fluctuations in the fitness function, causing temporal variation in the magnitude, but not the direction of selection. However, fluctuations of the optimum phenotype need not directly translate into variation in selection gradients, because their impact can be buffered by partial tracking of the optimum by the mean phenotype. Analyzing individuals that reproduce in consecutive years, we find that plastic changes track movements of the optimum phenotype across years, especially in bird species, reducing temporal variation in directional selection. This suggests that phenological plasticity has evolved to cope with fluctuations in the optimum, despite their currently modest contribution to variation in selection. Postprint

Behavioral traits are considered animal personality traits when individuals differ consistently in their expression across time and across context. Here, we test this idea on three metrics derived from social interaction networks (strength, betweenness, closeness). Using experimental data from house sparrows in captive populations, and observational data from house sparrows in a wild population, we show that all three metrics consistently exhibit repeatability across both study populations and two methods of recording interactions. The highest repeatability values were estimated in male-only captive groups, while repeatabilities estimated in single-sex networks subsetted from mixed-sex groups showed no sex-specificity. We also show that changes in social group composition led to a decrease in repeatability for up to six months. This work provides substantial and generalizable support for the notion that social network node-based metrics can be considered animal personalities.
