This article provides results from a survey of instructors who have offered the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program (NSTMOP) to youth planning to work in agriculture. Youth younger than age 16 who wish to be employed on non-family farms are required to complete an approved safety training program to operate tractors and other powered machinery. A survey of educators who offered the NSTMOP program was conducted to learn more about their successes, challenges, and feedback related to the instructor training course and program materials. Results provide direction to the instructors' programmatic needs with respect to teaching safety-related topics.

The educators' version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed by 40 of 156 in-house trainers. More than one-third experience emotional exhaustion weekly, and almost half feel a lack of personal accomplishment. Subscales of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment correlated with perceptions of organizations' valuing of the training function. (Contains 37 references.) (SK)

This paper provides an overview of progress and opportunities in Stats NZ's journey towards a register-based statistical system. It sets out to provide a status update of the components of the system at Stats NZ – Statistical Business Register (SBR), Statistical Person Register (SPR), and Statistical Location Register (SLR). The drivers for change and changes to the authorising environment are described, including the prioritisation of a register-based statistical system through Stats NZ's strategic priorities and the updates to the legislative context through the Data and Statistics Act 2022. The current state of each of the base registers is briefly described and detail is provided on the evolution of a SPR and concept development of a property-centric location register. Given recent evidence that a shortage of qualified candidates for PETE positions exists (Boyce & Rikard, 2008; Woods, Goc Karp, & Feltz, 2003), this dual purposed study was designed to examine the nature of and possible factors that may contribute to that shortage. The first purpose was to examine the results of searches from the perspectives of search chairs for PETE positions posted during the 2007-08 academic year. The second purpose was to determine K-12 teachers' perceptions about pursuing advanced degrees and careers in PETE. Search chairs highlighted low numbers of qualified applicants and the need for strategies that improve the recruitment of individuals to choose PETE doctoral studies. The majority of teachers (52%) reported aspirations to continue their careers teaching at the K-12 level instead of pursuing teaching in higher education. Suggestions for policy reexamination in PETE doctoral programs related to hiring and recruitment are provided. (Contains 3 tables.)

Context: Limited literature explores professional preparation of program directors (PD) to lead an athletic training education program (ATEP). Objective: To explore challenges, effectiveness, leadership, and PD role selection. Design: Descriptive and qualitative exploratory email survey. Setting: Educational. Participants: Emails were sent to 345 PDs from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) listing. Main Outcome Measure(s): Measures of central tendency were used to observe years of experience, role selection (applied versus appointed), education level, and gender. Program Director effectiveness, leadership, and challenges were grouped according to common themes. Results: Most PDs (82.5%; n = 99) reported having one to ten years of experience. Mean years of experience was 7.46 (±6.36) years. A majority, 61.7% (n = 74), reported having applied for their position. Educationally, 54.2% (n = 65) held doctoral degrees compared to 45.8% (n = 55) whose highest degree was a masters degree. Six themes emerged for PD effectiveness and challenges. Lastly, seven themes regarding leadership were described. Conclusions: Program Directors should approach their role with savvy, caring, and humanistic attitudes, developed by professional preparation. Firm in their convictions and vision, PDs also are viewed as empathetic advocates for students. Program Directors play a critical role in the advocacy of the profession within institutions of higher education through professional preparation of students. Several themes pertaining to professional preparation of PDs may positively impact the profession. Future PD's should seek educational programs that prepare them for these challenges of the position, such as professional preparation in education and higher administration or curriculum and instruction.

Many components are necessary in order to successfully compile a NASPE/NCATE beginning teacher standards report, including a tremendous amount of hard work, time, and patience. It is also imperative that report compilers have sufficient institutional resources and a well-planned strategy for report-writing success. Typically, the faculty member charged with compiling the program report must also invest personal time, energy, and dedication to the project. Likewise, program reviewers undergo a similar ordeal when they are asked to perform a program review. This article takes a look at the program report process from the reviewers' perspective. It explains the process that a reviewer must go through with each assigned report and how the reviewer determines what score to assign to a report. It will help all program report compilers, especially those compiling reports for the first time, to understand how to make their reports as "reviewer friendly" as possible. (Contains 1 figure.)

Describes a study to determine the burnout levels of coaches in two-year colleges. The sample consisted of coaches of women's volleyball and basketball (n=147). The female coaches in this study reported higher levels of burnout when compared to their male counterparts. Recommendations for recognizing and reducing burnout are included. (IAH)

In this paper, we situate the findings from the studies in this thematic issue within the current policy environment that influences the status, rankings, and funding contexts for doctoral programs in Physical Education Teacher Education within and across institutions. We identify common challenges that these doctoral programs are confronted with including the recruitment of doctoral students, the lack of diversity of faculty and students, the purpose of the doctoral degree, and core content knowledge for the degree. The growth of sport management has led to concerns about the quantity and quality of candidates for faculty positions. In addition to trying to recruit recent doctoral graduates, many programs focus on recruiting established faculty members. This study examines factors affecting the willingness of sport management faculty to accept new positions, and the likelihood of leaving their current positions. While the likelihood of leaving was not high, objective factors such as salary and location were important to those willing to take a new position. Subjective factors such as fit within the program and quality of faculty in the program were also important, whereas several factors were less important (e.g., recruiter description, recruiter approach, and leadership opportunities). Results confirm that attracting faculty in sport management is challenging and universities must consider a combination of strategies to attract them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Weese (2002) recently expressed concerns about the faculty job market in sport management. The purpose of the current article is to examine and discuss both the number of doctoral students being produced and the adequacy of their preparation for faculty positions. The authors surveyed doctoral-program faculty and reviewed advertised open positions to provide the basis for observations regarding current and future issues relative to this job market. Whereas the authors found that approximately 70 jobs are advertised each year in sport management, doctoral programs produce only about 15 graduates annually, suggesting that the numbers produced are clearly insufficient. When examining the adequacy of the students' preparation, the authors found research preparation is considered to be most important. Doctoral programs in sport management, however, also place high emphasis on teaching preparation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A readership survey of Journal of Sport Management (JSM) subscribers was conducted to investigate the journal's readership and usage. A secondary purpose was to examine the usage of other journals for teaching, research, and publication. A total of 178 respondents answered the survey for a return rate of 44.5%. General satisfaction with the journal was reflected in the positive comments ascribed to the journal as well as in the high ratings for readership and value of each section of the journal. The most frequently mentioned suggestions/comments for the journal were as follows: (a) Make it more practically oriented, (b) increase the number of issues, (c) provide some focus for job positions/openings and contacts for graduates seeking employment, (d) maintain or increase the theoretical orientation, and (e) provide more international contributions. Salmonella infections are a major cause of illness in the United States. The antimicrobial agents used to treat severe infections include ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and ampicillin. Antimicrobial drug resistance has been associated with adverse clinical outcomes. To estimate the incidence of resistant culture-confirmed nontyphoidal Salmonella infections, we used Bayesian hierarchical models of 2004-2012 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System and Laboratory-based Enteric Disease Surveillance. We based 3 mutually exclusive resistance categories on susceptibility testing: ceftriaxone and ampicillin resistant, ciprofloxacin nonsusceptible but ceftriaxone susceptible, and ampicillin resistant but ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin susceptible. We estimated the overall incidence of resistant infections as 1.07/100,000 person-years for ampicillin-only resistance, 0.51/100,000 person-years for ceftriaxone and ampicillin resistance, and 0.35/100,000 person-years for ciprofloxacin nonsusceptibility, or ≈6,200 resistant culture-confirmed infections annually.
