The Haitian government began the construction of a canal over the binational Masacre or Dajabón River, on the Dominican-Haitian border with the purpose of using its waters to irrigate agricultural soils. This action was opposed by the Dominican government, which responded with the total closure of the border, the reinforcement of security and the suspension of Dominican visas for Haitians, a situation that negatively affects bilateral trade, the main means of livelihood of the population on both sides, therefore, the objective of this work was to assess the level of incidence of this conflict generated by the construction of that channel in formal and informal commercial exchange, as well as efforts made by the Dominican authorities. and Haitians to resolve the dispute and the prospects for a solution in the short term. Given that it is a developing process, an investigation was carried out based on statistical data and documentary review mainly of journalistic articles, resolutions, statements from merchants, businessmen and Haitian and Dominican authorities, as well as international organizations that have taken part as mediators in this impasse. The results of the study show a reduction in the value of formal commercial exchange by more than 50% and in informal trade by more than 60% at the Dajabón point, which is why a quick solution to the conflict is urgently needed, since its prolongation would deepen the poverty and the migration of the Haitian and Dominican inhabitants of that territory.
