Resumen: Objetivo: Identificar los determinantes estructurales e intermedios que se asocian a las hospitalizaciones evitables (HE) de pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2). Diseño: Revisión de la literatura basada en una síntesis narrativa. Fuentes de datos: Bases de datos: PubMed, Science Direct, y Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS). Selección de estudios: Los documentos fueron seleccionados y analizados bajo una revisión crítica de literatura tomando en cuenta los criterios de inclusión y de exclusión. Extracción de datos: La información extraída de cada artículo seleccionado se sintetizó con base en el nivel de ingreso de los países y el marco de los determinantes sociales de la salud. Resultados: De un total de 4.166 artículos potencialmente relevantes, se identificaron y seleccionaron 36 para su revisión. De ellos, 21 fueron publicaciones realizadas en países con ingresos altos, 14 en países de ingresos medio-altos y una en países de ingresos medio-bajos. En la literatura publicada se ha identificado que la cobertura de servicios de salud —en particular de atención primaria— y el aseguramiento en salud contribuyen a disminuir el riesgo de HE, en tanto que las desigualdades sociales tienden a incrementar el riesgo. Conclusiones: Las HE por DM2 son susceptibles de reducirse a través de políticas que contribuyan a incrementar el acceso efectivo a los servicios de salud (disponibilidad, aseguramiento), ya que expresan la desigualdad social, presentándose en mayor medida en poblaciones socioeconómicamente vulnerables. Esta revisión proporciona evidencia sobre la necesidad de ampliar la investigación sobre este tema en países de ingresos medios y bajos. Abstract: Objective: To identify the structural and intermediate determinants associated with avoidable hospitalizations (AH) of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Design: Literature review based on narrative synthesis. Data sources: Databases: PubMed, Science Direct, and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). Study selection: Documents were selected and analyzed under a critical literature review, considering inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data extraction: Information extracted from each selected article was synthesized based on the countries’ income levels and the social determinants of health framework. Results: A total of 4,166 articles were relevant, 36 were selected for review. From this selection, 21 were publications conducted in high-income countries, 14 in upper-middle-income countries, and one in lower-middle-income countries. The review identified that the coverage of health services —mainly primary health care— and health insurance contribute to reducing the risk of AH for T2DM, while social inequalities tend to increase the risk. Conclusions: The AH due to T2DM are susceptible to reduction through policies that contribute to increasing effective access to health services (availability, insurance), since they express social inequality, occurring to a greater extent in socioeconomically vulnerable populations. This review also provides evidence of the need to expand research on this topic in middle and low-income countries.

Abstract Background The identification of low-frequency haplotypes, never observed in homozygous state in a population, is considered informative on the presence of potentially harmful alleles (candidate alleles), putatively involved in inbreeding depression. Although identification of candidate alleles is challenging, studies analyzing the dynamics of potentially harmful alleles are lacking. A pedigree of the highly endangered Gochu Asturcelta pig breed, including 471 individuals belonging to 51 different families with at least 5 offspring each, was genotyped using the Axiom PigHDv1 Array (658,692 SNPs). Analyses were carried out on four different cohorts defined according to pedigree depth and at the whole population (WP) level. Results The 4,470 Linkage Blocks (LB) identified in the Base Population (10 individuals), gathered a total of 16,981 alleles in the WP. Up to 5,466 (32%) haplotypes were statistically considered candidate alleles, 3,995 of them (73%) having one copy only. The number of alleles and candidate alleles varied across cohorts according to sample size. Up to 4,610 of the alleles identified in the WP (27% of the total) were present in one cohort only. Parentage analysis identified a total of 67,742 parent-offspring incompatibilities. The number of mismatches varied according to family size. Parent-offspring inconsistencies were identified in 98.2% of the candidate alleles and 100% of the LB in which they were located. Segregation analyses informed that most potential candidate alleles appeared de novo in the pedigree. Only 17 candidate alleles were identified in the boar, sow, and paternal and maternal grandparents and were considered segregants. Conclusions Our results suggest that neither mutation nor recombination are the major forces causing the apparition of candidate alleles. Their occurrence is more likely caused by Allele-Drop-In events due to SNP calling errors. New alleles appear when wrongly called SNPs are used to construct haplotypes. The presence of candidate alleles in either parents or grandparents of the carrier individuals does not ensure that they are true alleles. Minimum Allele Frequency thresholds may remove informative alleles. Only fully segregant candidate alleles should be considered potentially harmful alleles. A set of 16 candidate genes, potentially involved in inbreeding depression, is described.

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the trends and disparities in preventable or treatable mortality rates among different age groups, sexes, and states in Mexico from 2000 to 2019. Using national data from 2000 to 2019, we examined potentially avoidable premature mortality (PAPM) rates, disaggregated into preventable and treatable deaths. Trends over time were visualized using the average annual percent change (AAPC) derived from joinpoint analysis. Subnational analysis was conducted to identify state-specific trends for each sex and age group. The national PAPM rate decreased from 297 deaths per 100,000 in 2000 to 281 per 100,000 in 2019. Potentially preventable premature mortality (PPPM) rates were more pronounced than potentially treatable premature mortality (PTPM) rates, with 170 deaths per 100,000 and 111 per 100,000, respectively. Sex-based disparities were observed particularly in the working-age population. Our analysis at the state level revealed significant differences in trends, as certain regions experienced reductions while others rises. These disparities became more evident when examining the different aspects of PAPM, especially in terms of PTPM. Our study highlights the differences in PAPM rates across age groups, sexes, and states in Mexico. Despite a general downward trend, upward trends were observed in the male working-age group. There was also wide variation among states, highlighting the need to use PAPM in conjunction with other health metrics for a holistic health analysis.

El presente trabajo comienza por describir los principales conceptos asociados a la inmigración internacional presente hoy en Chile para luego profundizar/analizar el modelo de trabajo que un municipio en particular, el de La Pintana (Santiago de Chile), realiza en la materia. El texto aborda la historicidad de las iniciativas locales de la comuna señalada tendientes al acompañamiento de este grupo de la población, para luego explicitar de manera directa las líneas de acción actuales que el municipio contempla y el respectivo análisis de resultados de las mismas. Desde un abordaje epistémico preocupado fundamentalmente de los métodos de trabajo que se llevan adelante y, desde la utilización de un método de investigación mixto para la obtención de resultados; la investigación busca conocer la estrategia que la Municipalidad de La Pintana lleva adelante para la creación de su primera política pública comunal en materia de migraciones internacionales y personas solicitantes de refugio.

Background: Type 2 diabetes elevates the risk of severe outcomes in COVID-19 patients, with multiple studies reporting higher case fatality rates. Metformin is a widely used medication for glycemic management. We hypothesize that improved adherence to metformin may lower COVID-19 post-infection mortality risk in this group. Utilizing data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), we investigate the relationship between metformin adherence and mortality following COVID-19 infection in patients with chronic metformin prescriptions. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study consisting of 61,180 IMSS beneficiaries who received a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or rapid test for SARS-CoV-2 and had at least two consecutive months of metformin prescriptions prior to the positive test. The hypothetical intervention is improved adherence to metformin, measured by proportion of days covered (PDC), with the comparison being the observed metformin adherence values. The primary outcome is all-cause mortality following COVID-19 infection. We defined the causal parameter using shift intervention, an example of modified treatment policies. We used the targeted learning framework for estimation of the target estimand. Findings: Among COVID-19 positive patients with chronic metformin prescriptions, we found that a 5% and 10% absolute increase in metformin adherence is associated with a respective 0.26% (95% CI: −0.28%, 0.79%) and 1.26% (95% CI: 0.72%, 1.80%) absolute decrease in mortality risk. Interpretation: Subject to the limitations of a real-world data study, our results indicate a causal association between improved metformin adherence and reduced COVID-19 post-infection mortality risk.

Healthcare quality in low- and middle-income countries poses a significant challenge, contributing to heightened mortality rates from treatable conditions. The accreditation of health facilities was part of the former health reform in Mexico, proposed as a mechanism to enhance healthcare quality. This study assesses the performance of hospital accreditation in Mexico, utilizing indicators of effectiveness, efficiency, and safety. Employing a longitudinal approach with controlled interrupted time series analysis (C-ITSA) and fixed effects panel analysis, administrative data from general hospitals in Mexico is scrutinized. Results reveal that hospital accreditation in Mexico fails to enhance healthcare quality and, disconcertingly, indicates deteriorating performance associated with increased hospital mortality. Amidst underfunded health services, the implemented accreditation model proves inadequately designed to uplift care quality. A fundamental redesign of the public hospital accreditation model is imperative, emphasizing incentives for structural enhancement and standardized processes. Addressing the critical challenge of improving care quality is urgent for Mexico’s healthcare system, necessitating swift action to achieve effective access as a benchmark for universal healthcare coverage.

Given the risk and impact of infectious-contagious X diseases, which are expected to increase in frequency and unpredictability due to climate change and anthropogenic penetration of the wilderness, it is crucial to advance descriptions and explanations that improve the understanding and applicability of current theories. An inferential approach is to find analogies with better-studied contexts from which new questions and hypotheses can be raised through their concepts, propositions, and methods. Kinematics emerges as a promising analog field in physics by interpreting states’ changes in a contagion process as a movement. Consequently, this work explores, for a contagion process, the representations and conceptual equivalents for position, displacement, velocity, momentum, and acceleration, introducing some metrics. It also discusses some epistemological aspects and proposes future perspectives.

Abstract Background In spite of the availability of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array data, differentiation between observed homozygosity and that caused by mating between relatives (autozygosity) introduces major difficulties. Homozygosity estimators show large variation due to different causes, namely, Mendelian sampling, population structure, and differences among chromosomes. Therefore, the ascertainment of how inbreeding is reflected in the genome is still an issue. The aim of this research was to study the usefulness of genomic information for the assessment of genetic diversity in the highly endangered Gochu Asturcelta pig breed. Pedigree depth varied from 0 (founders) to 4 equivalent discrete generations (t). Four homozygosity parameters (runs of homozygosity, F ROH ; heterozygosity-rich regions, F HRR ; Li and Horvitz’s, F LH ; and Yang and colleague’s F YAN ) were computed for each individual, adjusted for the variability in the base population (BP; six individuals) and further jackknifed over autosomes. Individual increases in homozygosity (depending on t) and increases in pairwise homozygosity (i.e., increase in the parents’ mean) were computed for each individual in the pedigree, and effective population size (N e ) was computed for five subpopulations (cohorts). Genealogical parameters (individual inbreeding, individual increase in inbreeding, and N e ) were used for comparisons. Results The mean F was 0.120 ± 0.074 and the mean BP-adjusted homozygosity ranged from 0.099 ± 0.081 (F LH ) to 0.152 ± 0.075 (F YAN ). After jackknifing, the mean values were slightly lower. The increase in pairwise homozygosity tended to be twofold higher than the corresponding individual increase in homozygosity values. When compared with genealogical estimates, estimates of N e obtained using F YAN tended to have low root-mean-squared errors. However, N e estimates based on increases in pairwise homozygosity using both F ROH and F HRR estimates of genomic inbreeding had lower root-mean-squared errors. Conclusions Parameters characterizing homozygosity may not accurately depict losses of variability in small populations in which breeding policy prohibits matings between close relatives. After BP adjustment, the performance of F ROH and F HRR was highly consistent. Assuming that an increase in homozygosity depends only on pedigree depth can lead to underestimating it in populations with shallow pedigrees. An increase in pairwise homozygosity computed from either F ROH or F HRR is a promising approach for characterizing autozygosity.

Objetivo. Documentar las tendencias de la inequidad en las tasas de homicidio en México para el periodo 2000-2021, a nivel estatal y nacional. Métodos. Se realizó un estudio ecológico observacional y longitudinal en el cual se estimaron las tasas estandarizadas de mortalidad de homicidios por municipio y sexo. Clasificando a los municipios de acuerdo con el Índice de Rezago Social en cinco grupos. Se obtuvo la brecha absoluta de desigualdad, así como la diferencia entre los grupos de muy alto y muy bajo rezago social para cada año del periodo estudiado. Resultados. En las 32 entidades se observa un incremento en la tasa de mortalidad por homicidios, con tasas mayores entre hombres, pero un incremento relativo mayor entre mujeres (porcentaje de cambio: 127,86 vs 110,03). La brecha absoluta entre municipios de muy alto y muy bajo rezago social se ha cerrado en el periodo por el incremento en la tasa de mortalidad por homicidios en los municipios de bajo rezago social y por una cierta reducción en los de muy alto rezago social. Conclusiones. En México, entre 2000 y 2021 se redujo la brecha absoluta en las defunciones por homicidios entre municipios de muy alto y muy bajo rezago social debido al incremento en la tasa de homicidios en los municipios de menor rezago social. Es necesario reforzar políticas y acciones encaminadas a atender los determinantes sociales de la violencia interpersonal.

Abstract Breeding programs have an essential role in the recovery of threatened populations through optimal genetic management and mating strategies. The dama gazelle (Nanger dama) is a North African ungulate listed as critically endangered. The mhorr subspecies is extinct in the wild and currently survives thanks to the creation in 1971 of an ex situ breeding program. The aim of the present study was to assess the evolution of genetic variability in this mhorr gazelle captive population, as well as the mating strategy used in two reference populations studied (Almeria and Europe). The entire pedigree, with 2739 animals, was analyzed to measure demographic characters, pedigree completeness level, probability of gene origin, level of relatedness and genetic structure of the population. The population size has been progressively increasing, with up to 264 individuals alive in Europe at the time of the study. The average number of equivalent complete generations was 5.55. The effective number of founders and ancestors was both 3, and the founder genome equivalent was 1.99. The genetic contributions of the four main ancestors were unbalanced. The average values of inbreeding and average relatedness for the whole pedigree were, respectively, 28.34% and 50.14%. The effective population size was 8.7 by individual increase in inbreeding and 9.8 by individual increase in coancestry. F‐statistics evidenced a very small level of population subdivision (FST = 0.033370). The mating strategy used, based on the minimum coancestry of the individuals, has minimized the losses of genetic variability and helped to balance the genetic contributions between ancestors. The strategy also avoided large subdivisions within the population and the appearance of new bottlenecks. This study shows how pedigree analysis can both be used to determine the genetic variability of the population and to assess the influence of the mating strategy used in the breeding program on such variability.

In this paper, we examine the epidemiological model B-SIR, focusing on the dynamic law that governs the transmission rate B. We define this dynamic law by the differential equation B′/B=F⊕−F⊖, where F⊖ represents a reaction factor reflecting the stress proportional to the active group’s percentage variation. Conversely, F⊕ is a factor proportional to the deviation of B from its intrinsic value. We introduce the notion of contagion impulse f and explore its role within the model. Specifically, for the case where F⊕=0, we derive an autonomous differential system linking the effective reproductive number with f and subsequently analyze its dynamics. This analysis provides new insights into the model’s behavior and its implications for understanding disease transmission.

This study aimed to compare different inbreeding measures estimated from pedigree and molecular data from two divergent mouse lines selected for environmental birth weight during 26 generations. Furthermore, the performance of different approaches and both molecular and pedigree data sources for estimating Ne were tested in this population. A total of 1,699 individuals were genotyped using a high-density genotyping array. Genomic relationship matrices were used to calculate molecular inbreeding: Nejati-Javaremi (FNEJ), Li and Horvitz (FL&H), Van Raden method 1 (FVR1) and method 2 (FVR2), and Yang (FYAN). Inbreeding based on runs of homozygosity (FROH) and pedigree inbreeding (FPED) were also computed. FROH, FNEJ, and FL&H were also adjusted for their average values in the first generation of selection and named FROH0, FNEJ0, and FL&H0. ∆F was calculated from pedigrees as the individual inbreeding rate between the individual and his parents (∆FPEDt) and individual increases in inbreeding (∆FPEDi). Moreover, individual ∆F was calculated from the different molecular inbreeding coefficients (∆FNEJ0, ∆FL&H, ∆FL&H0, ∆FVR1, ∆FVR2, ∆FYAN, and ∆FROH0). The Ne was obtained from different ∆F, such as NePEDt, NePEDi, NeNEJ0, NeL&H, NeL&H0, NeVR1, NeVR2, NeYAN, and NeROH0. Comparing with FPED, FROH, FNEJ and FVR2 overestimated inbreeding while FNEJ0, FL&H, FL&H0, FVR1 and FYAN underestimated inbreeding. Correlations between inbreeding coefficients and ∆F were calculated. FROH had the highest correlation with FPED (0.89); FYAN had correlations >0.95 with all the other molecular inbreeding coefficients. NePEDi was more reliable than NePEDt and presented similar behaviour to NeL&H0 and NeNEJ0. Stable trends in Ne were not observed until the 10th generation. In the 10th generation NePEDi was 42.20, NeL&H0 was 45.04 and NeNEJ0 was 45.05 and in the last generation these Ne were 35.65, 35.94 and 35.93, respectively FROH presented the highest correlation with FPED, which addresses the identity by descent probability (IBD). The evolution of NeL&H0 and NeNEJ0 was the most similar to that of NePEDi. Data from several generations was necessary to reach a stable trend for Ne, both with pedigree and molecular data. This population was useful to test different approaches to computing inbreeding coefficients and Ne using molecular and pedigree data.

Una preocupación en las personas, consiste en cómo conocer su inmediato estado de salud. Un indicador clave para ello, lo reportan los parámetros de signos vitales: temperatura, frecuencia cardíaca y oxigenación; Los dispositivos wearables, permiten ese monitoreo mediante conexión con un móvil; sin embargo, muchos usuarios desconocen o no logran la interpretación adecuada de tales reportes. Por esta razón, además de monitorear automáticamente los signos vitales (en periodos determinados de tiempo), el objetivo del sistema propuesto, consiste en emitir alertas que se envían automáticamente, no solo al usuario del dispositivo, sino también a un acompañante mediante mensaje de texto, cada vez que alguno de estos parámetros se encuentra fuera del rango normal permitido. Esto se logra con un modelo de categorización de usuarios soportado por un sistema de reglas que describe los rangos normales, estableciendo criterios para emitir las alertas. El beneficio principal del sistema propuesto, es tener información específica y en tiempo real, de un parámetro corporal permitiendo advertir un estado alterado de salud, insumo importante, para tomar decisiones médicas.

Abstract Up to 478 Gochu Asturcelta pig parents-offspring trios (61 different families) were genotyped using the Axiom_PigHDv1 Array to identify the causes of Mendelian errors (ME). Up to 545,364 SNPs were retained. Up to 40,540 SNPs gathering 292,297 allelic mismatches were identified and were overlapped with SINEs and LINEs (Sscrofa genome 11.1). Copy number variations (CNV) were called using PennCNV. ME were classified into eight different classes according to the trio member (“Trio” meaning no assignment) and the allele on which ME was identified: TrioA/B, FatherA/B, MotherA/B, OffspringA/B. Most ME occurred due to systematic causes: (a) those assigned to the Father, Mother or Offspring occurred by null or partial null alleles characterized by heterozygote deficiency, varied with family size, involved a low number of loci (6506), and gathered most mismatches (228,145); (b) TrioB errors varied with family size, covaried with SINEs, LINEs and CNV, and involved most ME loci (33,483) and mismatches (65,682); and (c) TrioA errors were non-systematic ME with no sampling bias involving 1.2% of mismatches only and a low number of loci (1939). The influence of TrioB errors on the overall genotyping quality may be low and, since CNV vary among populations, their removal should be considered in each particular dataset. ME assignable to the Father, Mother or Offspring may be consistent within technological platforms and may bias severely linkage or association studies. Most ME caused by null or partial null alleles can be removed using heterozygote deficiency without affecting the size of the datasets.

Context: Masonry bricks are one of the most widely used building materials in the world, which leads to the overexploitation of its raw materials. Its production consumes a large amount of energy and has a large environmental footprint. The clay brick industry can add residues to its raw materials; among those reported are tea processing waste, brick waste, paper industry residues, waste from coffee mills, and coal ashes. Method: Bottom coal ashes were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, electronic microscopy, and particle size analysis. In addition, their density and loss on ignition were determined. The incorporation of ashes in the elaboration of clay bricks was evaluated, with sand replacement percentages of 0, 3, 5, and 7%. Finally, the physical and mechanical properties of the bricks were evaluated. Results: The water absorption and apparent porosity increased, while the compressive strength and bulk density decreased with the incorporation of ash in the brick samples, except for those with a 3% replacement, which showed a better performance in the evaluated properties. Conclusions: Coal bottom ashes have great potential in the manufacturing of clay bricks. The findings of this study indicate that, by incorporating up to 3% ashes, bricks can be obtained which comply with the Colombian regulations.

Abstract Human interactions and perceptions about health risk are essential to understand the evolution over the course of a pandemic. We present a Susceptible-Exposed-Asymptomatic-Infectious-Recovered-Susceptible mathematical model with quarantine and social-distance-dependent transmission rates, to study COVID-19 dynamics. Human activities are split across different location settings: home, work, school, and elsewhere. Individuals move from home to the other locations at rates dependent on their epidemiological conditions and maintain a social distancing behavior, which varies with their location. We perform simulations and analyze how distinct social behaviors and restrictive measures affect the dynamic of the disease within a population. The model proposed in this study revealed that the main focus on the transmission of COVID-19 is attributed to the “home” location setting, which is understood as family gatherings including relatives and close friends. Limiting encounters at work, school and other locations will only be effective if COVID-19 restrictions occur simultaneously at all those locations and/or contact tracing or social distancing measures are effectively and strictly implemented, especially at the home setting.

BackgroundTimely monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants is crucial to effectively managing both prevention and treatment efforts. In this paper, we aim to describe demographic and clinical patterns of individuals with COVID-19-like symptoms during the first three epidemic waves in Mexico to identify changes in those patterns that may reflect differences determined by virus variants.MethodsWe conducted a descriptive analysis of a large database containing records for all individuals who sought care at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) due to COVID-19-like symptoms from March 2020 to October 2021 (4.48 million records). We described the clinical and demographic profile of individuals tested (3.38 million, 32% with PCR and 68% with rapid test) by test result (positives and negatives) and untested, and among those tested, and the changes in those profiles across the first three epidemic waves.ResultsIndividuals with COVID-19-like symptoms were older in the first wave and younger in the third one (the mean age for those positive was 46.6 in the first wave and 36.1 in the third wave; for negatives and not-tested, the mean age was 41 and 38.5 in the first wave and 34.3 and 33.5 in the third wave). As the pandemic progressed, an increasing number of individuals sought care for suspected COVID-19. The positivity rate decreased over time but remained well over the recommended 5%. The pattern of presenting symptoms changed over time, with some of those symptoms decreasing over time (dyspnea 40.6 to 14.0%, cough 80.4 to 76.2%, fever 77.5 to 65.2%, headache 80.3 to 78.5%), and some increasing (odynophagia 48.7 to 58.5%, rhinorrhea 28.6 to 47.5%, anosmia 11.8 to 23.2%, dysgeusia 11.2 to 23.2%).ConclusionDuring epidemic surges, the general consensus was that any individual presenting with respiratory symptoms was a suspected COVID-19 case. However, symptoms and signs are dynamic, with clinical patterns changing not only with the evolution of the virus but also with demographic changes in the affected population. A better understanding of these changing patterns is needed to improve preparedness for future surges and pandemics.

The aim of this study was the identification of candidate genomic regions associated with fiber diameter in alpacas. DNA samples were collected from 1011 female Huacaya alpacas from two geographical Andean regions in Peru (Pasco and Puno), and three alpaca farms within each region. The samples were genotyped using an Affymetrix Custom Alpaca genotyping array containing 76,508 SNPs. After the quality controls, 960 samples and 51,742 SNPs were retained. Three association study methodologies were performed. The GWAS based on a linear model allowed us to identify 11 and 35 SNPs (−log10(p-values) > 4) using information on all alpacas and alpacas with extreme values of fiber diameter, respectively. The haplotype and marker analysis method allowed us to identify nine haplotypes with standardized haplotype heritability higher than six standard deviations. The selection signatures based on cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity (XP-EHH) allowed us to identify 180 SNPs with XP-EHH values greater than |3|. Four candidate regions with adjacent SNPs identified via two association methods of analysis are located on VPA6, VPA9, VPA29 and one chromosomally unassigned scaffold. This study represents the first analysis of alpaca whole genome association with fiber diameter, using a recently assembled alpaca SNP microarray.

A mathematical epidemiological model incorporating the mobility of rodents and human groups among zones of less or major contact between them is presented. The hantavirus infection dynamics is expressed using a model type SEIR (Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Removed), which incorporates the displacement of the rodent and the human, between the urban and rural sector, the latter being subdivided in populated and non-populated. The results show the impact that rodent or human displacement may have on the propagation of hantavirus infection. Human mobility is more significant than rodents in increasing the number of hantavirus infection cases. The results found may be used as a reference by the health authorities to develop more specific campaigns on the territorial dynamics of the rodent, attend to the mobility of humans in these territories, mainly agricultural and forestry workers, and strengthen control-prevention actions in the community, to prevent future outbreaks that are fatal.

Sharka is a disease affecting stone fruit trees. It is caused by the Plum pox virus (PPV), with Myzus persicae being one of the most efficient aphid species in transmitting it within and among Prunus orchards. Other agricultural management strategies are also responsible for the spread of disease among trees, such as grafting and pruning. We present a mathematical model of impulsive differential equations to represent the dynamics of Sharka disease in the tree and vector population. We consider three transmission routes: grafting, pruning, and through aphid vectors. Grafting, pruning, and vector control occur as pulses at specific instants. Within the model, human risk perception towards disease influences these agricultural management strategies. Model results show that grafting with infected biological material has a significant impact on the spread of the disease. In addition, detecting infectious symptomatic and asymptomatic trees in the short term is critical to reduce disease spread. Furthermore, vector control to prevent aphid movement between trees is crucial for disease mitigation, as well as implementing awareness campaigns for Sharka disease in agricultural communities that provide a long-term impact on responsible pruning, grafting, and vector control.

Introduction The Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) mathematical-epidemiological model has been exhaustively used since de beggining of the COVID-19 pandemic. These models intended to predict hospital burden and evaluate health measures to contain its spread. In this sense, flaws have been evidenced in the predictions of the first published models. It is considered necessary to evaluate the differences in the approach and verification of the models. Objectives We carried out a systematic review of the articles published in journals indexed in the Web of Science, of the first quartile and with an impact factor greater than two, that met the selection and inclusion criteria following the PRISMA-ScR standards. We included a total of 32 articles, which were evaluated according to demographic characteristics such as the month of receipt and publication, the country of origin of the information, the subject matter of the journal, and the characteristics of the modeling such as the presence of additional compartments, graphical analysis, conceptual model approach, interpretation of the basic reproductive number, and estimation of parameters. Methods Articles published in medical and health journals were predominant from February to July 2020. These articles most frequently used data from China and mostly focused on SEIR or full quarantine compartment models. The articles published in journals in mathematics were predominant from August to December 2020. Models used data from different world regions, considering a greater diversity of compartments such as asymptomatic patients or partial or complete quarantine. Results The articles analyzed mostly use SEIR-type models expanded with additional compartments. There are discrepancies in the breadth and methodological quality of the articles published according to the journal’s subject matter. Este artículo se deriva de un proyecto de investigación que indaga por las funciones y los efectos perlocutivos de la ironía verbal en el aula, a partir del diálogo directo con 104 profesores de Educación Básica Secundaria y Media Vocacional en colegios oficiales del departamento del Quindío. A partir de un diseño metodológico fundamentalmente cualitativo, de corte histórico-hermenéutico, e iluminado por una perspectiva pragmático-socio-discursiva de la ironía verbal, se analizan las principales funciones de la ironía y los efectos perlocutivos de la ironía en el aula de educación básica y media vocacional. Se proyectan algunas implicaciones pedagógico-didácticas sobre la función y los efectos de la ironía en el aula, en diálogo con una definición de ironía como estrategia retórica, socio-discursiva, carnavalizante y pedagógico-didáctica para el diálogo constructivo con las nuevas generaciones.

Abstract Modeling human behavior within mathematical models of infectious diseases is a key component to understand and control disease spread. We present a mathematical compartmental model of Susceptible–Infectious–Removed to compare the infected curves given by four different functional forms describing the transmission rate. These depend on the distance that individuals keep on average to others in their daily lives. We assume that this distance varies according to the balance between two opposite thrives: the self-protecting reaction of individuals upon the presence of disease to increase social distancing and their necessity to return to a culturally dependent natural social distance that occurs in the absence of disease. We present simulations to compare results for different society types on point prevalence, the peak size of a first epidemic outbreak and the time of occurrence of that peak, for four different transmission rate functional forms and parameters of interest related to distancing behavior, such as: the reaction velocity of a society to change social distance during an epidemic. We observe the vulnerability to disease spread of close contact societies, and also show that certain social distancing behavior may provoke a small peak of a first epidemic outbreak, but at the expense of it occurring early after the epidemic onset, observing differences in this regard between society types. We also discuss the appearance of temporal oscillations of the four different transmission rates, their differences, and how this oscillatory behavior is impacted through social distancing; breaking the unimodality of the actives-curve produced by the classical SIR-model.

Objective. To appraise the presence and magnitude of inter- and intra-country health inequalities related to HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) among young females. Methods. We analyzed household surveys in twenty LAC countries, that included data from female adolescents and young women (ages 15-24) between 2008 and 2018, measuring inequality with the concentration index of 4 indicators: 1) whether individuals have heard of HIV or not, 2) a composite variable of correct knowledge, 3) reported condom use with the last partner, and 4) whether individuals were ever tested for HIV. Results. Participants from households in countries with higher socioeconomic status are more likely to have heard of HIV, have correct knowledge of HIV transmission, and have used condoms during their last sexual intercourse. The inter-country concentration index for those indicators were 0.352, 0.302 and 0.110, respectively. Conclusions. Economically disadvantaged female adolescents and young women in LAC face an increased risk for HIV, as they are less aware of HIV and its actual transmission mechanism and are less likely to use condoms with their sexual partners. There is an urgent need to tailor prevention strategies of sexually transmitted infections and HIV for adolescents and young women that are sensitive to their socioeconomic context.

Copy number variations regions (CNVRs) can be classified either as segregating, when found in both parents, and offspring, or non-segregating. A total of 65 segregating and 31 non-segregating CNVRs identified in at least 10 individuals within a dense pedigree of the Gochu Asturcelta pig breed was subjected to enrichment and functional annotation analyses to ascertain their functional independence and importance. Enrichment analyses allowed us to annotate 1018 and 351 candidate genes within the bounds of the segregating and non-segregating CNVRs, respectively. The information retrieved suggested that the candidate genes spanned by segregating and non-segregating CNVRs were functionally independent. Functional annotation analyses allowed us to identify nine different significantly enriched functional annotation clusters (ACs) in segregating CNVR candidate genes mainly involved in immunity and regulation of the cell cycle. Up to five significantly enriched ACs, mainly involved in reproduction and meat quality, were identified in non-segregating CNVRs. The current analysis fits with previous reports suggesting that segregating CNVRs would explain performance at the population level, whereas non-segregating CNVRs could explain between-individuals differences in performance.

Abstract Background Uniformity of body weight is a trait of great economic importance in the production of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). A necessary condition to improve this trait through selective breeding is the existence of genetic variability for the environmental variance of body weight. Although several studies have reported such variability in other aquaculture species, to our knowledge, no estimates are available for shrimp. Our aim in this study was to estimate the genetic variance for weight uniformity in a farmed population of shrimp to determine the potential of including this trait in the selection program. We also estimated the genetic correlation of weight uniformity between two environments (selection nucleus and commercial population). Methods The database contained phenotypic records for body weight on 51,346 individuals from the selection nucleus and 38,297 individuals from the commercial population. A double hierarchical generalized linear model was used to analyse weight uniformity in the two environments. Fixed effects included sex and year for the nucleus data and sex and year-pond combination for the commercial data. Environmental and additive genetic effects were included as random effects. Results The estimated genetic variance for weight uniformity was greater than 0 (0.06 ± 0.01) in both the nucleus and commercial populations and the genetic coefficient of variation for the residual variance was 0.25 ± 0.01. The genetic correlation between weight and weight uniformity was close to zero in both environments. The estimate of the genetic correlation of weight uniformity between the two environments (selection nucleus and commercial population) was 0.64 ± 0.06. Conclusions The existence of genetic variance for weight uniformity suggests that genetic improvement of this trait is possible. Selection for weight uniformity should not decrease weight, given the near zero genetic correlation between these two traits. The strong genetic correlation of weight uniformity between the two environments indicates that response to selection for uniformity in the nucleus will be at least partially transmitted to the commercial population if this trait is included in the breeding goal.

Se analizó el pedigrí en diez razas de ovinos mediante parámetros genéticos poblacionales. Las poblaciones fueron Blackbelly (BBL; 19,695), Charollais (CHA; 5,033), Dorper (DOR; 42,171), Dorper Blanco (DOB; 4,213), Dorset (DOS; 5,557), Hampshire (HAM; 12,210), Katahdin (KAT; 77,955), Pelibuey (PEL; 42,256), Rambouillet (RAM; 11,951) y Suffolk (SUF; 14,099); nacidos de 1992 a 2018. Los análisis se realizaron con el software Endog. En padres conocidos, los valores oscilaron de 76.4 % (SUF) a 95.3 % (KAT), con promedio general de 86.0%, los animales con padres desconocidos correspondieron a los fundadores. La población consanguínea (como porcentaje de la población total) fluctuó del 12.3 % en DOS al 48.7 % en DOB, con promedio general de 29.7 %; la consanguinidad (F) promedio osciló de 3.9 (KAT) a 14.6 (DOB), con promedio general de 8.0. Objetivo. Medir la desigualdad en el uso de servicios de tamizaje en adultos de 20 a 59 años, a partir de las encuestas nacionales de salud y nutrición 2006 y 2012. Material y métodos. A partir de la selección de cinco indicadores de tamizaje en adultos (detección de diabetes, hipertensión y cánceres de mama, cérvicouterino y de próstata) se estimaron el índice de Kuznets, el índice de desigualdad de la pendiente y el índice de concentración de salud, considerando como indicadores sociales la escolaridad, etnicidad, desempleo, nivel socioeconómico y tipo de protección en salud. Resultados. Las coberturas de las cinco pruebas se incrementaron, sin embargo, la desigualdad observada disminuyó únicamente en las intervenciones en mujeres; en el caso de la detección de cáncer de próstata se incrementó. Conclusión. Si bien es importante monitorear el desempeño de los servicios curativos, persiste el reto de asegurar el acceso efectivo y equitativo a servicios de diagnóstico temprano.

Abstract Background Control of the environmental variability by genetic selection offers possibilities for new selection objectives for productive traits. This methodology aims at reducing heterogeneity in productive traits and has been applied to several traits and species for which animal homogeneity is profitable. In horse breeding programmes, rank in competitions is a common selection objective but has been challenging to model. In this study, the parameters of environmental variability for the rank of a horse were computed to analyse the capability of a horse to maintain the best ranking across competitions that consist of long-distance races in which the adapted physical condition of the horse is essential. The genetic component of the environmental variance for the rank in endurance competitions was evaluated, which resulted in proposing a new transformation of horse scores in competitions. Results Homogeneous and heterogeneous variance models were compared by assaying three random effects that affect both the rank and its variability, using endurance ride data consisting of 2863 records. The pedigree relationship matrix contained 5931 animals. The rank trait was transformed into a normalized variable to prevent false estimates of the genetic correlation by inappropriate artificial skewness. The models included the number of participants in the race, sex, and age as systematic effects. The rider, the rider-horse interaction, or an environmental permanent effect were tested as random effects, in addition to additive genetic and residual effects. The models were analysed using the GSEVM program. Estimates of heritability for rank ranged from 0.12 to 0.15. The heterogeneous variance model that fitted the rider was assessed as the best model based on the deviance information criterion. Estimates of genetic variance for rank variability ranged from 0.12 to 0.13. The genetic correlation between the rank and its environmental variability was low and did not differ from 0. Conclusions These results offer an opportunity to select animals for canalization by reducing the variability of race results and achieving the best positions, which could be a new selection objective by weighting estimated breeding values for rank and its variability in a selection index.

Introduction Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome is an infection caused by rodents of the Bunyanvirales family towards humans. This disease in Chile is considered endemic, which has a high fatality rate. At present, some studies show the contagion between people of the Andes virus, whose locality is concentrated in Argentina and Chile. Objectives Analyze the possibility of hantavirus transmission between humans using an SEIR-type mathematical model. Methods An SEIR (Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious and Recovered) mathematical model to express the dynamics of hantavirus disease is proposed, including the possibility of human-to-human transmission and the perception of risk. Results The peak of human-to-human contagion decreases by about 25% after increasing people’s perception of risk by reducing the rate of resistance to changeand increasing the speed of people’s reaction. Conclusions It is urgent to review risk communication strategies and prevention measures in the face of this possibility of massive human-tohuman infections, in addition to strengthening research and planning the development of a vaccine to protect populations exposed to this disease with a high fatality rate.

Objective. To estimate inequalities in access to health services among Mexican population living in localities of 100 000 or less inhabitants. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional analysis using the National Health and Nutrition Survey 100k 2018 survey data. Access was estimated using health insurance and care for the last health condition. As inequality measure, we estimated the concentration index using an imputation of household per capita income. Results. Among studied population, health insurance was 82.42% and access to care 60.03%. We identified inequalities in both indicators; marginal and pro-poor for insurance and pro-rich for access to care. Conclusion. In Mexico, even within the popuation living in poverty there are inequalities in access to health care. More granular public interventions are needed to address inequalities in an effective way.

The selection objective for animal production is the highest income with the lowest production cost, while ensuring the highest animal welfare. A selection experiment for environmental variability of birth weight in mice showed a correlated response in the mean after 20 generations starting from a crossed panmictic population. The relationship between the birth weight and its environmental variability explained the correlated response. The scale effect represents a potential cause of this correlation. The relationship between the mean and the variability implies: the higher the mean, the higher the variability. The study was to quantify by simulation the genetic correlation between a trait and its environmental variability. This can be attributable to the scale effect in a range of coefficients of variation and heritabilities between 0.05 and 0.50. The resulting genetic correlation ranged from 0.1335 to 0.7021 being the highest for the highest heritability and the lowest CV. The scale effect for a trait with heritability between 0.25 and 0.35 and CV between 0.15 and 0.25 generated a genetic correlation between 0.43 and 0.57. The genetic coefficient of variation (GCV) affecting residual variability was modulated by the strength reducing the impact of the scale effect. GCV ranged from 0.0050 to 1.4984. The strength of the scale effect might be in the range between 0 and 1. The scale effect would explain many reported genetic correlation and the additive genetic variance for the variability. This is relevant when increasing the mean of a trait jointly with the reduction of its variability.

Abstract Background Adequate access to sexual and reproductive health services is associated with better results. Analyzing the differences in access and outcomes of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) by share of poverty at the regional level makes it possible to measure the magnitude of the challenge of inequity. This paper aims to estimate the magnitude of health inequality in SRH in Ecuador for the period 2009–2015. Methods This study analyzed health inequalities in sexual and reproductive health indicators (obstetric and abortion complications, caesarean and home deliveries, adolescent fertility, and maternal mortality) for 2009 and 2015 comparing provinces in Ecuador. The absolute and relative gaps were estimated between provinces grouped by the percentage of individuals in multidimensional poverty; the slope index of inequality and the relative index of inequality were estimated as measures of gradient; and finally, the concentration index was also estimated. Results The analysis identified that obstetric complications, abortion complications, and cesareans have tended to increase from 2009 to 2015, without relevant differences between provinces ordered by poverty. Adolescent fertility decreased in the country as well as the inequality in its distribution among provinces: the CI was − 0.046 in 2015, down from − 0.084 in 2009. Home deliveries as a ratio of total deliveries have a decreasing trend with mixed results in terms of inequality: while there is a decrease in the absolute gap from − 211.06 to 184.4 between 2009 and 2015, the concentration index increased from − 0.331 to − 0.496. Finally, the maternal mortality rate increased in the period, also with greater inequality: from an absolute gap of − 39.30 in 2019, up to − 46.7 in 2015. In the same direction, the CI went from − 0.127 to − 0.174. Conclusions Ecuador faces major challenges in terms of both levels and inequalities in SRH outcomes and access to services. These inequalities related to poverty highlight the persistence of social inequities in the country. These health inequalities affect the wellbeing of Ecuadorian women but they are amendable. There is a need for pro-equity interventions, with stronger efforts in areas (provinces) with larger socioeconomic vulnerabilities.

Abstract Background Selection of mice for decreased environmental variability of birth weight has achieved higher survivability and larger litter size as a correlated response to canalized selection, which suggests higher welfare and robustness, and animals that are more homogeneous. However, in these studies, animals were not exposed to an environmental challenge. To demonstrate the advantages of this mouse line with a low environmental variability of birth weight, animals from two divergent lines (high and low variability of birth weight) were subjected to feed restriction. The objective of this study was to use these divergent lines to compare their response in terms of robustness against an environmental challenge. At weaning, 120 females, i.e. four full-sib females from 10 random litters of three consecutive generations of selection, were chosen from these divergent lines. The total number of females was divided into four groups, which were subjected to a feeding regimen by imposing different levels of feed restriction (i.e. 75, 90 and 85% of full ad libitum feed across three generations, respectively) in different combinations during the growth and reproduction periods. Results Animals from the “low” line were less sensitive to a change in feed level than those from the “high” line. Regarding reproduction, the “low” line performed better in terms of number of females having parturitions, number of parturitions, and litter size. Imposing a feed restriction on female mice during their growth period did not affect the birth weight of their pups. The “low” line was preferred because of its higher reproductive efficiency and survival under an environmental challenge. Conclusions Selection for decreased environmental variability of birth weight produces animals that are less sensitive to environmental conditions, which can be interpreted as having greater robustness.

En alpacas los fenotipos del color de vellón tienen diferentes terminologías que induce a una confusión dentro del color marrón y sus tonalidades, el que requiere de una mejor descripción y cuantificación. En consecuencia los objetivos del estudio fueron cuantificar el color de fibra e identificar los PNSs informativos del gen MC1R (receptor 1 de melanocortina) en alpacas marrones y negras. Un fenotipo vicuña (n=14) y cuatro fenotipos de alpacas (n=79), marrón claro, marrón oscuro, marrón-negro y negro fueron evaluados por colorimetría. El vellón de vicuña mostró mayor luminosidad (47.74) e intensidad de color (24.33) respecto a las alpacas marrones. Los valores obtenidos de CIE L*a*b* (luminosidad e intensidad) sugieren valores bajos en alpacas eumelánicas y altos en alpacas feomelánicas. En vicuña y alpaca la secuencia codificante del gen MC1R tiene un solo exón de 954 pb, las vicuñas no mostraron la deleción (c.224_227del). Sin embargo, esta deleción se ha observado en los tres fenotipos de alpaca (marrón claro, marrón oscuro y negro), al igual que los cinco PNSs no sinónimos que ya fueron descritos en otras poblaciones, c.82A>G, c.259G>A, c.376G>A, c.587T>C, c.901C>T (p.T28A, p.M87V, p.G126S, p.F196S y p.R301C). Para las dos especies, se identificaron un total de ocho haplotipos definidos por los cinco PNSs. No se observaron asociaciones entre los fenotipos de color y los PNSs: c.259G>A, c.376G>A y c.901C>T (p>0.05), probablemente debido a la influencia de otros genes como el ASIP en la expresión del color. Nuestros resultados, así como los estudios previos evidenciaron regiones altamente conservadas en la secuencia codificante del gen MC1R.

Using a mathematical model, we explore the problem of availability versus overdemand of critical hospital processes (e.g., critical beds) in the face of a steady epidemic expansion such as is occurring from the COVID-19 pandemic. In connection with the statistics of new cases per day, and the assumption of maximum quota, the dynamics associated with the variables number of hospitalized persons (critical occupants) and mortality in the system are explored. A parametric threshold condition is obtained, which involves a parameter associated with the minimum daily effort for not collapsing the system. To exemplify, we include some simulations for the case of Chile, based on a parameter of effort to be sustained with the purpose of lowering the daily infection rate.

We present a straightforward projection with data up to 21/03/2020 of the evolution of the number of COVID-19 cases per day in Chile using data from the Ministry of Health. Assuming an arithmetical growth in the second variation of the data, we present a cubic adjustment model in which we estimate over 100 000 cases at 120 days consistent with the data recorded to date. Furthermore, we use an exponential total case model to represent (using a parameter) the daily effort to reduce a high initial daily growth rate. We simulate this model with different numerical scenarios of feasibility and desired future prevalence.

This paper describes the considerations taken into account in order to design and build an electronic control system to be used on an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), in an effective, versatile and economic way, using Commercial Off-The-Shelf elements, with the intention to participate in one of the most important academic contest in the maritime and nautical network – the Hydrocontest. The control architecture design is based on the requirements imposed by the contest, which is the exclusive use of a 48V Sony® battery to provide energy to a 1.4KW Watt & Sea® engine provided by the organization.

Improving textile characteristics is the main objective of alpaca breeding. A recently developed SNP chip for alpacas could potentially be used to implement genomic selection and accelerate genetic progress. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the increase in prediction accuracy of three important fiber traits: fiber diameter (FD), standard deviation of fiber diameter (SD), and percentage of medullation (PM) in Huacaya alpacas. The data contains a total pedigree of 12,431 animals, 24,169 records for FD and SD, and 8386 records for PM and 60,624 SNP markers for each of the 431 genotyped animals of the Pacomarca Genetic Center. Prediction accuracy of breeding values was compared between a classical BLUP and a single-step Genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP). Deregressed phenotypes were predicted. The accuracies of the genetic and genomic values were calculated using the correlation between the predicted breeding values and the deregressed values of 100 randomly selected animals from the genotyped ones. Fifty replicates were carried out. Accuracies with ssGBLUP improved by 2.623%, 6.442%, and 1.471% on average for FD, SD, and PM, respectively, compared to the BLUP method. The increase in accuracy was relevant, suggesting that adding genomic data could benefit alpaca breeding programs.

In this paper, we develop and analyze an SIS-type epidemiological-mathematical model of the interaction between pesticide use and infectious respiratory disease transmission for investigating the impact of pesticide intoxication on the spread of these types of diseases. We further investigate the role of educational treatment for appropriate pesticide use on the transmission dynamics. Two impulsive control events are proposed: pesticide use and educational treatment. From the proposed model, it was obtained that the rate of forgetfulness towards educational treatment is a determining factor for the reduction of intoxicated people, as well as for the reduction of costs associated with educational interventions. To get reduced intoxications, the population's fraction to which is necessary to apply the educational treatment depends on its individual effectiveness level and the educational treatments' forgetfulness rate. In addition, the turnover of agricultural workers plays a fundamental role in the dynamics of agrotoxic use, particularly in the application of educational treatment. For illustration, a flu-like disease with a basic reproductive number below the epidemic threshold of 1.0 is shown can acquire epidemic potential in a population at risk of pesticide exposure. Hence, our findings suggest that educational treatment targeting pesticide exposure is an effective tool to reduce the transmission rate of an infectious respiratory disease in a population exposed to the toxic substance.

Small-sized animal populations can undergo significant loss of genetic variability that can lead to their extinction. Therefore, studies on animal breeding have focused on mating systems for minimizing the disappearance of genetic variability. The main objective of this study was to compare, using computer simulations, the performance of different breeding schemes to limit the loss of genetic diversity in small-sized populations. This objective was achieved by monitoring the evolution of the effective population size obtained by 23 strategies throughout 20 generations in two populations of Gazella cuvieri. The scenarios were designed with different assumptions, in both reference subpopulations, regarding: the use of parents coancestry or offspring coancestry, the use of their increases or the coefficients themselves, and the number of males and females involved. Computations were performed using an experimental module of Endog v4.9 developed for this purpose. The results of the study showed that strategies for minimizing the coancestry of the parents were better in the short term; however, these strategies were worse in the long term. Minimizing the average coancestry of the offspring was a better approach in the long term. Nevertheless, in both populations, the best results were obtained when both the coancestry of the parents and the coancestry of the offspring were weighted at 5% each and neither males nor females were assumed to contribute to the next generation. In any case, not all strategies had the same evolutionary pattern throughout generations in both populations. The current results show that neither traditional nor new strategies have any general use. Therefore, it is important to carefully test these strategies before applying them to different populations with different breeding needs under different conditions, such as different generation intervals, and different natural breeding systems such as monogamy or polygyny.

Objetivo. Analizar la tendencia entre 2000 y 2012 en des­igualdades socioeconómicas para indicadores de diabetes e hipertensión en México, así como el gradiente de desigualdad, por sexo, ámbito de residencia y condición indígena. Ma­terial y métodos. Análisis de las encuestas nacionales de salud de 2000, 2006 y 2012, estimando para los tres momentos la brecha absoluta y relativa entre quintiles, en indicadores de diabetes e hipertensión, así como el índice de desigualdad de la pendiente. Resultados. En México, entre 2000 y 2012 se ha reducido la brecha en la prevalencia de diabetes e hipertensión por diagnóstico previo. Asimismo, se han reducido de forma importante las brechas relacionadas con la atención de diabetes e hipertensión, persistiendo diferencias por gradiente de desigualdad, en particular en lo que se refiere a la presencia de complicaciones de diabetes. Conclusión. Los resultados identifican avances importantes en la disminución de la desigualdad para la atención adecuada de diabetes e hipertensión, si bien persisten diferencias de consideración. Si se toma en cuenta la relevancia de estas condiciones de salud en México es necesario fortalecer la calidad de la atención en los servicios públicos para avanzar hacia el acceso efectivo.

Objetivo. Analizar las desigualdades en indicadores de atención a niños de 0 a 9 años en México, documentando los cambios en las brechas y gradientes. Material y mé­todos. Análisis de encuestas nacionales de salud estimando las brechas absoluta y relativa así como el gradiente de des­igualdad para cuatro indicadores seleccionados (cobertura de vacunación, atención a infecciones respiratorias agudas (IRA), prácticas saludables en enfermedad diarreica aguda (EDA) y atención por accidentes). Resultados. El análisis documenta el logro de la equidad inmunológica en México y la eliminación de la brecha por condiciones socioeconómicas relacionadas con la atención a accidentes, en tanto que per­siste la relacionada con la atención a IRA, misma que también persistente por ámbito de residencia y para la población indígena. Conclusión. En México han disminuido las brechas en los indicadores de salud en niños. Si bien persisten en particular para intervenciones que requieren la participación de los establecimientos de salud, es necesario dirigir acciones específicas para asegurar el acceso homogéneo en todo el país a los servicios e intervenciones.

Objetivo. Analizar la tendencia en desigualdades en pro­tección financiera y acceso a servicios de salud en México entre 2000 y 2012, usando medidas de brecha y de gradiente. Material y métodos. Análisis de las encuestas naciona­les de salud de 2000, 2006 y 2012, estimando las brechas absoluta y relativa en indicadores de protección financiera y de acceso a servicios de salud y el índice de desigualdad de la pendiente, utilizando como indicador socioeconómico el ingreso imputado, así como las diferencias en resultados por sexo, ámbito de residencia y condición étnica. Resultados. Entre 2000 y 2012 se ha eliminado la desigualdad en protec­ción financiera relacionada con condición socioeconómica de forma paralela a la disminución general de la carencia en protección financiera, en tanto que persiste la desigualdad en indicadores de acceso a servicios de salud, tanto por nivel socioeconómico como por otros estratificadores sociales. Conclusiones. La reforma de 2003 se ha traducido en la eliminación de la desigualdad en protección financiera; no obstante, persiste la desigualdad en el acceso a los servicios de salud. Se requiere reenfocar acciones hacia la eliminación de las barreras relacionadas con la calidad de los servicios de salud, que promuevan el acceso efectivo a la salud en México.

Objetivo. Analizar las desigualdades en comportamientos de riesgo en adolescentes de 10 a 19 años en México y documentar los cambios en las brechas y la magnitud de la desigualdad. Material y métodos. Análisis de las encuestas nacionales de salud de 2000 y 2012 estimando para ambas la brecha absoluta y relativa en indicadores de comportamiento de riesgo, así como el índice de desigualdad de la pendiente. Resultados. Para comportamientos sexuales, el uso de métodos anticonceptivos muestra un índice de desigualdad elevado e incrementado entre 2000 y 2012 tanto para hom­bres como para mujeres; esto es, menor probabilidad de uso para menor nivel socioeconómico. Para el consumo de tabaco y alcohol, la probabilidad es mayor entre quienes cuentan con mayores recursos. Conclusiones. El análisis presentado señala retos importantes en términos de la atención de comportamientos que comprometen la salud de los adoles­centes mexicanos y su bienestar futuro. Comprender mejor los elementos asociados a las desigualdades identificadas es necesario para el desarrollo de acciones preventivas eficaces.

The racing time and rank at finish traits are commonly used for endurance horse breeding programs as a measure of their performance. Even so, given the nature of endurance competitions, many horses do not finish the race. However, the exclusion of non placed horses from the dataset could have an influence on the prediction of individual breeding values. The objective of the present paper was to develop a multitrait model including race time (T), rank (R) and placing (P), with different methodologies, to improve the genetic evaluation in endurance competitions in Spain. The database contained 6135 records from 1419 horses, with 35% of the records not placed. Horse pedigree included 10868 animals, with 52% Arab Horses. All models included gender, age and race effect as systematic effects and combined different random effects beside the animal and residual effects: rider, permanent environmental effect, and interaction horse-rider. The kilometers per race was included as a covariate for T. Heritabilities were estimated as moderately low, ranging from 0.06 to 0.14 for T, 0.09 to 0.15 for P, and 0.07 to 0.17 for R, depending on the model. T and R appeared mostly as inverse measures of the same trait due to their high genetic correlation, suggesting that T can be ignored in future genetic evaluations. P was the most independent trait from the genetic correlations. The possibility of simultaneously processing the threshold, Thurstonian and continuous traits has opened new opportunities for genetic evaluation in horse populations, and much more practical genetic evaluations can be done to help a proper genetic selection.

Birth weight (BW) in animal production is an economically important trait in prolific species. The laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) is used as an experimental animal because it is considered a suitable model for prolific species such as rabbits and pigs. Two mouse lines were divergently selected for birth weight variability with a third line of non-selected control population of the same origin as the animals starting the experiment. The objective of this study was, therefore, to compare and evaluate the differential response of each line. The animals were from the 17th generation of both low and high BW variability lines of the divergent selection experiment, including in addition animals from the control line. The dataset contained 389 records from 48 litters of the high line, 734 records from 73 litters of the low line, and 574 records from 71 litters of the control line. The studied traits were as follows: the BW, the BW variance, the BW standard deviation, the BW coefficient of variation within-litter, the weaning weight (WW), the litter size at birth and at weaning, the weight gain, and the preweaning survival. The model included the line effect jointly with the parturition number and its interaction, the linear and quadratic LS as covariates except for the LS trait itself when analyzing litter traits, as well as the pup sex when analyzing individual traits. The low line had a lower BW and WW, but a higher litter size, and greater robustness owing to a higher survival at weaning. As a model of livestock animals, the findings from this experiment led to a proposal of selection for pig production that would combine an increase in litter size with higher survival and welfare. Compared with the control line, a much higher response was observed in the low variability line than in the high line, making it extremely satisfactory given that homogeneity provides advantages in terms of animal welfare and robustness.
