1. Measuring the impact of financial taxation on capital: evidence from Chilean manufacturing plants

Abstract: Using panel data from Chilean manufacturing plants, we estimate the impact of a stamp tax, levied on loans by financial institutions, on capital stock. Our results show that the tax has a statistically significant negative effect on the stock of capital. Specifically, we find that a rise of one percentage point in the financial tax rate decreases the stock of capital by about $$4\% $$. We also find that the impact on firms is heterogeneous, depending on the intensity of the different types of capital they hold. In particular, the demand for capital from firms with a higher percentage of structural assets, such as land and buildings, is relatively less affected by the tax.

2. Soft Skills Centrality in Graduate Studies Offerings

Abstract: Is it possible to measure how critical soft skills like leadership or teamwork are from the viewpoint of graduate studies offerings? This paper provides a conceptual and methodological framework that introduces the concept of a bipartite network as a practical way to estimate the importance of soft skills as socio-emotional abilities trained in graduate studies. We examined 230 graduate programs offered by 49 higher education institutions in Colombia to estimate the empirical importance of soft skills from the viewpoint of graduate studies offerings. The results show that: (a) graduate programs in Colombia share 31 soft skills in their intended learning outcomes; (b) the centrality of these skills varies as a function of the graduate pro- gram, although this variation was not statistically significant; and (c) while most central soft skills tend to be those related to creativity (i.e. creation or generation of ideas or projects), leadership (to lead or teamwork), and analytical orientation (e.g. evaluating situations and solving problems), less central were those related to empathy (i.e. understanding others and acknowledgment of others), ethical thinking, and critical thinking, posing the question if too much emphasis on most visible skills might imply an unbalance in the opportunities to enhancing other soft skills such as ethical thinking.

3. Collaboration, coordination and communication as facilitators of transitions for patients with advanced cancer: a scoping review linked to the Pal-Cycles project

Abstract: Abstract Background Person-centred care is becoming increasingly recognised as an important element of palliative care. The current review syntheses evidence in relation to transitions in advanced cancer patients with palliative care needs. The review focuses on specific elements which will inform the Pal-Cycles programme, for patients with advanced cancer transitioning from hospital care to community care. Elements of transitional models for cancer patients may include, identification of palliative care needs, compassionate communication with the patient and family members, collaborative effort to establish a multi-dimensional treatment plan, review and evaluation of the treatment plan and identification of the end of life phase. Methods A scoping review of four databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO) was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published from January 2013 to October, 2022. A further hand-search of references to locate additional relevant studies was also undertaken. Inclusion criteria involved cancer patients transitions of care with a minimum of two of components from those listed above. Studies were excluded if they were literature reviews, if transition of care was related to cancer survivors, involved non-cancer patients, had paediatric population, if the transition implied a change of therapy and or a lack of physical transit to a non-hospital place of care. This review was guided by Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and narrative synthesis was used. Results Out of 5695 records found, 14 records were selected. Transition models identified: increases in palliative care consultations, hospice referrals, reduction in readmission rates and the ability to provide end of life care at home. Transition models highlight emotional and spiritual support for patients and families. No uniform model of transition was apparent, this depends on the healthcare system where it is implemented. Conclusions The findings highlight the importance of collaboration, coordination and communication as central mechanisms for transitional model for patients with advanced cancer. This may require careful planning and will need to be tailored to the contexts of each healthcare system.

Abstract: Abstract Background National palliative care plans depend upon stakeholder engagement to succeed. Assessing the capability, interest, and knowledge of stakeholders is a crucial step in the implementation of public health initiatives, as recommended by the World Health Organisation. However, utilising stakeholder analysis is a strategy underused in public palliative care. Objective To conduct a stakeholder analysis characterising a diverse group of stakeholders involved in implementing a national palliative care plan in three rural regions of an upper-middle-income country. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study design, complemented by a quantitative stakeholder analysis approach, was executed through a survey designed to gauge stakeholders’ levels of interest and capability in relation to five fundamental dimensions of public palliative care: provision of services, accessibility of essential medicines, palliative care education, financial support, and palliative care vitality. Stakeholders were categorised as promoters (high-power, high-interest), latent (high-power, low-interest), advocates (low-power, high-interest), and indifferent (low-power and low-interest). Stakeholder self-perceived category and knowledge level were also assessed. Results Among the 65 surveyed stakeholders, 19 were categorised as promoters, 34 as advocates, 9 as latent, and 3 as indifferent. Stakeholders’ self-perception of their category did not align with the results of the quantitative analysis. When evaluated by region and palliative care dimensions the distribution of stakeholders was nonuniform. Palliative care funding was the dimension with the highest number of stakeholders categorised as indifferent, and the lowest percentage of promoters. Stakeholders categorised as promoters consistently reported a low level of knowledge, regardless of the dimension, region, or their level of interest. Conclusions Assessing the capability, interest, and knowledge of stakeholders is a crucial step when implementing public health initiatives in palliative care. It allows for a data-driven decision-making process on how to delegate responsibilities, administer financial resources, and establish governance boards that remain engaged and work efficiently.

Abstract: Summary: Background: Surgical care holds significant importance in healthcare, especially in low and middle-income countries, as at least 50% of the 4.2 million deaths within the initial 30 days following surgery take place in these countries. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery proposed six indicators to enhance surgical care. In Colombia, studies have been made using secondary data. However, strategies to reduce perioperative mortality have not been implemented. This study aims to describe the fourth indicator, perioperative mortality rate (POMR), with primary data in Colombia. Methods: A multicentre prospective cohort study was conducted across 54 centres (hospitals) in Colombia. Each centre selected a 7-day recruitment period between 05/2022 and 01/2023. Inclusion criteria involved patients over 18 years of age undergoing surgical procedures in operating rooms. Data quality was ensured through a verification guideline and statistical analysis using mixed-effects multilevel modelling with a case mix analysis of mortality by procedure-related, patient-related, and hospital-related conditions. Findings: 3807 patients were included with a median age of 48 (IQR 32–64), 80.3% were classified as ASA I or II, and 27% of the procedures had a low-surgical complexity. Leading procedures were Orthopedics (19.2%) and Gynaecology/Obstetrics (17.7%). According to the Clavien–Dindo scale, postoperative complications were distributed in major complications (11.7%, 10.68–12.76) and any complication (31.6%, 30.09–33.07). POMR stood at 1.9% (1.48–2.37), with elective and emergency surgery mortalities at 0.7% (0.40–1.23) and 3% (2.3–3.89) respectively. Interpretation: The POMR was higher than the ratio reported in previous national studies, even when patients had a low–risk profile and low-complexity procedures. The present research represents significant public health progress with valuable insights for national decision-makers to improve the quality of surgical care. Abstract: Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% has been studied. The effect of MWCNTs on thermal, viscoelastic, and electric properties in the TPU matrix was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and by impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the thermal, electrical, and viscoelastic properties, such as the glass transition temperature, shifted towards high temperatures. The melting temperature decreased, and the conductivity and the storage modulus increased by 61.5 % and 58.3 %. The previously observed behavior on the films is due to the increase in the mass percentage of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the TPU matrix. Also, it can be said that the CNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the TPU matrix, preventing the movement of the polymer chains, and generating channels or connections that increase the conductivity and improve the thermal properties of the material.

Abstract: La Cuarta Revolución Industrial ha generado cambios en la ciencia, la tecnología, el conocimiento, el mercado laboral, la educación, entre otros, surgiendo iniciativas pedagógicas acordes a las demandas contemporáneas. En este marco se ha consolidado el enfoque STEAM como una propuesta de innovación educativa. El presente artículo reflexivo, expone los supuestos básicos del movimiento de educación STEAM (por su sigla en inglés: Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) en América Latina, desde la perspectiva crítica de la educación popular. En este sentido, se plantea la Investigación como Estrategia Pedagógica-IEP- como una apuesta alternativa de promoción de ciencia, investigación y tecnología en niños, niñas y jóvenes escolares gestada desde la realidad de América Latina. La IEP ha jugado un papel clave, como una apuesta teórico metodológica de apropiación social de la ciencia, a través de un diálogo entre el contexto, el conocimiento y la realidad de la escuela colombiana, que tiene como centro las preguntas de investigación del estudiantado. Por ello, se reconoce el papel clave que puede jugar la pedagogía crítica y educación popular en construir geo-pedagogías situadas acordes a las condiciones de cada contexto.

9. Clinical and pathological differences between early- and late-onset colorectal cancer and determinants of one-year all-cause mortality among advanced-stage patients: a retrospective cohort study in Medellín, Colombia

Abstract: Objective: To identify the differences between early- (EOCRC) and late-onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC), and to evaluate the determinants of one-year all-cause mortality among advanced-stage patients. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out. CRC patients ≥ 18 years old were included. Chi-Square test was applied to compare both groups. Uni- and multivariate regressions were performed to evaluate the determinants of one-year all-cause mortality in all advanced-stage patients regardless of age of onset. Results: A total of 416 patients were enrolled; 53.1 % were female. Ninety cases (21.6 %) had EOCRC and 326 (78.4 %) had LOCRC. EOCRC cases were predominantly sporadic (88.9 %). Histology of carcinoma other than adenocarcinoma (p = 0.044) and rectum tumors (p = 0.039) were more prevalent in EOCRC. LOCRC patients were more likely to have smoking history (p < 0.001) and right colon tumors (p = 0.039). Alcohol consumption history (odds ratio [OR]: 3.375, 95 %CI: 1.022–11.150) and stage IV (OR: 12.632, 95 %CI: 3.506–45.513) were associated with higher one-year all-cause mortality among advanced-stage patients, the opposite was noted with left colon tumors (OR: 0.045, 95 %CI: 0.003–0.588). Conclusion: EOCRC was predominantly sporadic and had more cases of uncommon histological subtypes and rectal tumors. LOCRC was characterized by a higher prevalence of smoking history. Multivariate regression revealed an association between higher one-year all-cause mortality and alcohol consumption history and stage IV in advanced-stage patients. CRC exhibited differences based on age of onset. The evaluated factors associated with CRC mortality provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals, emphasizing the importance of adequate clinical assessment and early CRC diagnosis.

Abstract: La definición y priorización de actividades de restauración del paisaje en áreas deforestadas es esencial para la salud a largo plazo de los ecosistemas, la biodiversidad y las comunidades humanas que dependen de los servicios ecosistémicos de los bosques. Este estudio se enfocó en la compleja área de Belmira, Antioquia, en los Andes colombianos, donde el objetivo principal de la investigación se centró en la identificación de áreas y actividades de restauración mediante un análisis espacial multicriterio y un análisis multitemporal. Se presentó una metodología innovadora de elicitación que considera las características individuales de cada experto para estimar la importancia de estas actividades. Se diseñó un instrumento de madera con escala numérica para el proceso de elicitación, controlando posibles sesgos cognitivos mediante protocolos estructurados. Además, se introdujo un algoritmo para generar muestras de distribuciones de probabilidad elicitadas a partir de modelos beta con el objetivo de mejorar la robustez de los resultados. Los hallazgos destacaron que las actividades de restauración de cuencas y suelos, así como las cercas vivas, son consideradas de mayor importancia por los expertos en toda el área de estudio. Estos resultados sugieren que los esfuerzos ambientales en la región deben focalizarse en estas actividades para generar impacto positivo.

Abstract: Este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación que buscó explicar la forma en que los líderes éticos pueden influir en el desarrollo y sostenimiento de la cultura organizacional ética. Los resultados mostraron que esta influencia puede ser explicada asociando el comportamiento característico de los líderes éticos con la implementación de los mecanismos primarios de incorporación, con un enfoque ético, siendo este un enfoque poco explorado y con una aplicación limitada en el contexto de la ética organizacional. Dichos resultados se obtuvieron mediante el diseño de un modelo que representa cómo los mecanismos primarios apoyan la existencia de un conjunto de características que posibilitan la existencia de una cultura organizacional ética. Dicho modelo fue contrastado con la realidad mediante un estudio de caso en el Instituto para Niños Ciegos y Sordos del Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Se concluye que existe una variedad de comportamientos, decisiones, intereses, actitudes y formas de pensar y reaccionar, características de un líder ético, a través de las cuales estos pueden transmitir mensajes hacia la cultura organizacional, capaces de influir sobre el comportamiento ético de sus colaboradores.

Abstract: Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Abstract: Background: To achieve universal care and overcome existing barriers, the most effective strategy is to devise an action plan that incorporates palliative care into primary health care (PHC), as recommended by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Astana Declaration. In Colombia, a country with an upper-middle-income status, about 128,000 individuals experience severe health-related suffering (SHS) that necessitates palliative care. Although the country’s healthcare system has made steady strides in the integration and development of palliative care, there is still no national plan in place for palliative care. Objective: Build up Colombia’s palliative care plan through stakeholder consensus. Method: Based on the participatory action research method and the multi-stakeholder platforms model, this study convened 142 stakeholders from different levels of the health system (patient representatives, journalists, health professionals, government entities, insurance companies, universities, and drug regulatory authorities) Results: The national plan aims to achieve its objectives through a series of strategic actions. These include integrating and diversifying palliative care services, improving access to opioids, increasing palliative care education, promoting community-based palliative care programs, securing funding, and implementing a regulatory framework for palliative care by public policymakers. Conclusions: The national palliative care is an alliance that aims to reduce palliative care inequity in Colombia by 2026 by empowering stakeholders nationwide to collaborate around specific goals and objectives.

Abstract: Introducción. El tumor miofibroblástico inflamatorio es una enfermedad proliferativa rara, de etiología incierta, caracterizada por la proliferación de miofibroblastos epitelioides o fusionados mezclados con células inflamatorias, predominantemente mononucleares. En general se considera una lesión benigna, aunque en algunos casos esta neoplasia ha mostrado un comportamiento agresivo en cuanto a recidiva local y metástasis. El tratamiento definitivo es la resección quirúrgica completa. Caso clínico. Paciente de 67 años con dos meses de evolución de fiebre y masa abdominal, en quien se realizó una tomografía computarizada de abdomen que identificó una lesión de aspecto infiltrativo tumoral, comprometiendo la grasa retroperitoneal en la transcavidad de los epiplones. Por vía percutánea se tomó una biopsia que informó un pseudotumor inflamatorio retroperitoneal. Fue llevado a cirugía radical abdominal, con patología quirúrgica final que describió un tumor miofibroblástico inflamatorio de compromiso multifocal, adherido a la serosa del estómago e intestino delgado, sin compromiso muscular. Discusión. El tumor inflamatorio miofibroblástico es una entidad rara, de etiología por esclarecer y difícil diagnóstico. Presentamos el caso clínico de un paciente con tumor inflamatorio miofibroblástico gastrointestinal. Conclusión. Se describe el caso clínico de un paciente con un tumor inflamatorio miofibroblástico gastrointestinal, de presentación rara en nuestro medio. Es importante la comparación con casos similares para poder hacer conclusiones útiles en la práctica clínica.

Abstract: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a popular tool used by psychologists working as managers' coaches in organizational contexts. Despite its popularity, few studies provide empirical evidence on the role of the MBTI as a predictor of managers' leadership-related behaviors. This article is written based on research that answers the question of how good the MBTI is to prove leadership behavior. It does so by comparing goodness-of-fit indexes of two confirmatory factor analysis models and two structural models on the personality-leadership relationship, following standards of reproducible research principles. We sampled 529 participants who were graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in business administration programs from Colombian universities. Results show conclusive evidence of the psychometric measurement of both MBTI and leadership practices, even though the relationship between MBTI and the leadership practices inventory proved to be weak.

Abstract: The degree of quality of thermoplastic injection-molded parts can be established based on their weight, appearance, and defects. However, the conditions of the injection process may induce effects on the mechanical performance of the injected parts, and the residual stresses can cause cracks or early failures when an external load or force is applied. To evaluate these mechanical behaviors, different experimental techniques have been reported in the literature, where digital photoelasticity has stood out both for being a non-contact technique and for achieving quantitative results through sophisticated computational algorithms. Against this background, our proposal consists of analyzing the overall residual stress distribution of parts injected under different molding conditions by using digital photoelasticity. In this case, the specimens are subjected to bending strength tests to identify possible effects of the injection process conditions. The findings show that, at mold temperatures of 80 °C, flow-induced residual stresses increase with packing pressure. However, these internal stress levels do not affect the external load applied by the mechanical bending test, while the mass injected at higher levels of packing pressure helps to increase the bending strength of the injected part. At lower mold temperatures (50 °C), the mechanical strength of the injected part is slightly reduced, possibly due to a lower effect of the packing pressure.

Abstract: Expectancy is a core mechanism for constructing affective and cognitive experiences of music. However, research on musical expectations has been largely founded upon the perception of tonal music. Therefore, it is still to be determined how this mechanism explains the cognition of sound-based acoustic and electroacoustic music, such as complex sound music (CSM). Additionally, the dominant methodologies have consisted of well-controlled experimental designs with low ecological validity that have overlooked the listening experience as described by the listeners. This paper presents results concerning musical expectancy from a qualitative research project that investigated the listening experiences of 15 participants accustomed to CSM listening. Corbin and Strauss’ (2015) grounded theory was used to triangulate data from interviews along with musical analyses of the pieces chosen by the participants to describe their listening experiences. Cross-modal musical expectancy (CMME) emerged from the data as a subcategory that explained prediction through the interaction of multimodal elements beyond just the acoustic properties of music. The results led to hypothesise that multimodal information coming from sounds, performance gestures, and indexical, iconic, and conceptual associations re-enact cross-modal schemata and episodic memories where real and imagined sounds, objects, actions, and narratives interrelate to give rise to CMME processes. This construct emphasises the effect of CSM’s subversive acoustic features and performance practices on the listening experience. Further, it reveals the multiplicity of factors involved in musical expectancy, such as cultural values, subjective musical and non-musical experiences, music structure, listening situation, and psychological mechanisms. Abstract: Increasing water scarcity is encouraging the use of unconventional water resources. In recent years, the European Union has launched numerous initiatives to promote and facilitate water reuse for agricultural irrigation. Today, the use of reclaimed water for agriculture has become an alternative, reliable and safe source of water supply and an indispensable water planning tool, especially in the area of southern Europe. However, water reuse for irrigation is currently far below its potential. Numerous barriers prevent its development and call for a detailed analysis of the different aspects affecting reclaimed water reuse, through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach.A multidisciplinary research team from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, consisting of agronomists, hydrologists, chemists and agricultural economists, will work on the RECLAMO Project (https://blogs.upm.es/reclamo/), with the aim of providing solutions and recommendations aimed at promoting the full development and use of reclaimed water for irrigation in areas of Spain with marked water stress.For this purpose, project activities will be developed in two selected case studies (the Segura Basin, leader in water reuse in Spain and the Guadiana Basin, with success stories, but low levels of water reuse) and organised according to five axes: 1) development of a comprehensive knowledge-base covering the regulatory, technical, socio-economic and environmental aspects of reclaimed water reuse in agriculture; 2) participatory development of future scenarios exploring possible strategies, barriers and opportunities, in relation to the expansion of the use of reclaimed water for irrigation; 3) impact analysis of the strategies identified at different scales (crop, farm, (sub-)basin), through the development of an integrated modelling platform (hydrologic-agronomic-economic models); 4) Development of a roadmap and policy recommendations to achieve the full development and use of reclaimed water reuse for irrigation; 5) Dissemination of knowledge and promotion of science-policy-society dialogue.To this end, RECLAMO will collaborate closely with experts and stakeholder groups that will play a key role in the project in co-creating the scenarios and modelling tools and validating the results. The project will also seek for synergies and complementarities with other similar projects and explore new ways of collaborating with companies and research groups that allow research to continue and expand beyond the spatial and temporal limits of the project.RECLAMO’s results will promote an integrated approach to the sustainable management of water resources in water-stressed areas, including reclaimed water management. The integrated modelling platform developed in the project will allow policy-makers and water users to benefit from an improved understanding of the interactions between the social, economic and environmental aspects of water systems, in the context of climate and socio-economic change that will lead to better informed decision-making to address future water challenges. In addition, RECLAMO is expected to contribute to raising awareness about the use of reclaimed water reuse in agriculture as a safe and sustainable practice and to improve its social acceptance by producing science-based knowledge that provide evidence on the benefits derived from its use.

Se concluye que este modelo se ha implementado en diversas experiencias e iniciativas y se ha revelado como una herramienta esencial para revolucionar el sistema actual, especialmente en Latinoamérica. Abstract: How employees react to an organization’s ethical/social initiatives has little support in terms of empirical evidence. We examine employee perceptions about organizational social commitment (OSC) and its association with employee well-being (WB). The sample consists of 289 participants of a healthcare organization in Colombia. We use a comprehensive methodology for mining psychological/managerial constructs in R comprising six processes (observe, explore, confirm, explain, predict, and report). We provide information concerning the scales’ plausibility, reliability, convergent/discriminant validity, and equity. We contrast the relationship between OSC and WB by using structural equation modelling with bootstrap approaches. We examine the capability of OSC to predict WB by using machine learning methods. We found a positive relationship between the constructs, which shows that OSC is a valuable strategy for contributing to employee objectives from a ‘being well together’ perspective. The paper stimulates/facilitates future research and teaching-learning initiatives in latent variable analysis using the R language.

Abstract: Cytokines and chemokines are immune response molecules that display diverse functions, such as inflammation and immune regulation. In Plasmodium vivax infections, the uncontrolled production of these molecules is thought to contribute to pathogenesis and has been proposed as a possible predictor for disease complications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytokine profile of P. vivax malaria patients with different clinical outcomes to identify possible immune biomarkers for severe P. vivax malaria. The study included patients with non-severe (n = 56), or severe (n = 50) P. vivax malaria and healthy controls (n = 50). Patient plasma concentrations of IL-4, IL-2, CXCL10, IL-1β, TNF-α, CCL2, IL-17A, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ, IL-12p70, CXCL8 and active TGF-β1 were determined through flow cytometry. The levels of several cytokines and chemokines, CXCL10, IL-10, IL-6, IL-4, CCL2 and IFN-γ were found to be significantly higher in severe, compared to non-severe P. vivax malaria patients. Severe thrombocytopenia was positively correlated with IL-4, CXCL10, IL-6, IL-10 and IFN-γ levels, renal dysfunction was related to an increase in IL-2, IL-1β, IL-17A and IL-8, and hepatic impairment with CXCL10, MCP-1, IL-6 and IFN-γ. A Lasso regression model suggests that IL-4, IL-10, CCL2 and TGF-β might be developed as biomarkers for severity in P. vivax malaria. Severe P. vivax malaria patients present specific cytokine and chemokine profiles that are different from non-severe patients and that could potentially be developed as biomarkers for disease severity.

Abstract: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), also known as autoimmune myositis, are a rare group of autoimmune disorders with a heterogenoeous spectrum of muscular and extramuscular involvement. IIM can be classified into several subgroups: dermatomyositis (DM), including clinically amyopathic DM, antisynthetase syndrome (ASS), immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, inclusion body myositis, polymyositis, and overlap myositis (OM). Skin disease is a defining feature of DM, also present in AAS and OM. Lesions of DM are very varied but many share common histological features that are very useful for an early diagnosis of IIM when cutaneous involvement precedes other symptoms. Although the characteristic signs of DM are heliotrope rash, Gottron’s papules, and Gottron’s sign, there are a multitude of other cutaneous findings that can suggest a diagnosis of DM. Myositis-specific autoantibodies an myositis-associated autoantibodies have been identified in IIM. The former is only present in IIM and the latter can occur not only in IIM but also in other autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren syndrome, or systemic sclerosis. Myositis autoantibodies identify different clinical phenotypes, so they are very valuable in improving diagnosis and classification of IIM patients. This article first discusses the cutaneous findings of DM and then two particular phenotypes, MDA-5 DM, and AAS. Finally, OM according to myositis-associated autoantibodies is reviewed.

Abstract: The impacts on the morphological, electrical and hardness properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) plates using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as reinforcing fillers have been investigated, using MWCNT loadings between 1 and 7 wt%. Plates of the TPU/MWCNT nanocomposites were fabricated by compression molding from extruded pellets. An X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the incorporation of MWCNTs into the TPU polymer matrix increases the ordered range of the soft and hard segments. SEM images revealed that the fabrication route used here helped to obtain TPU/MWCNT nanocomposites with a uniform dispersion of the nanotubes inside the TPU matrix and promoted the creation of a conductive network that favors the electronic conduction of the composite. The potential of the impedance spectroscopy technique has been used to determine that the TPU/MWCNT plates exhibited two conduction mechanisms, percolation and tunneling conduction of electrons, and their conductivity values increase as the MWCNT loading increases. Finally, although the fabrication route induced a hardness reduction with respect to the pure TPU, the addition of MWCNT increased the Shore A hardness behavior of the TPU plates.

Abstract: Introducción: Las lesiones condrales de la rótula son un reto para el cirujano, principalmente en pacientes jóvenes y activos. La mayoría de los defectos condrales de la rótula son lesiones superficiales y pueden ser manejadas con técnicas de preservación articular; sin embargo, las lesiones profundas pueden requerir otro tipo de manejo. El objetivo de este artículo es comunicar el tratamiento de defectos osteocondrales de la rótula en pacientes jóvenes, mediante la técnica de aloinjerto fresco de donante cadavérico. Materiales y Métodos: Se seleccionaron pacientes con dolor anterior de rodilla, lesión condral de la rótula grado IIIIV y que habían recibido o no algún tipo de manejo médico o quirúrgico. En estos pacientes, se usó un aloinjerto fresco de rótula con el fin de solucionar el cuadro y mejorar la función. Resultados: Todos los pacientes recuperaron la función y los arcos de movilidad, y no refirieron dolor. Se comprobó la integración del aloinjerto fresco al área receptora, sin evidencia de rechazos del tejido o infecciones. Conclusiones: El uso de aloinjerto fresco de rótula para tratar defectos osteocondrales amplios es una técnica quirúrgica valiosa, fácil de implementar, que no requiere una curva de aprendizaje extensa y que mejora considerablemente el dolor y la función en pacientes jóvenes.
