Abstract

Media Access Control (MAC) address randomization causes significant distortion and data loss in Wi-Fi analytics systems, becoming a real challenge for building services based on tracking, location, and presence data. This study aims to mitigate this problem by combining two key points: the construction of a quasi-unique, stable, reliable, and anonymous identifier for non-connected Wi-Fi devices, and the inability of Wi-Fi devices to deliberately change the physical conditions of the connection. We propose a new system that builds identifiers based on the capabilities and information elements announced within the probe request management frames, and consequently applies unsupervised machine learning techniques in the multidimensional Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) space. Experimental tests in a real-world environment were conducted, and the results of this extensive field study demonstrated that the proposed system achieves high accuracy in identifying and tracking non-connected Wi-Fi devices in these challenging scenarios, even in the presence of MAC randomization. Our findings suggest that the proposed system has a significant potential for enhancing building services that rely on Wi-Fi data.

Abstract

In this work, a formulation of alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for addressing power amplifiers (PA) modeling and linearization problems is presented. The proposal consists on leveraging the implicit redundancy of the equations in order to achieve a distributed architecture. A detailed theoretical formulation of the method is provided in order to get a better comprehension of its advantages and the approach to integrating the technique in the standard direct learning architecture scheme for digital predistortion. In addition, a discussion on how the implicit regularization helps to deal with numerical problems is presented. It is proven that the implicit regression for the modeling and linearization of PAs can be carried out in a distributed fashion with similar accuracy, enabling the use of resource-constrained devices for digital predistortion. Furthermore, a computational assessment is presented for measuring in terms of arithmetic operations how simpler the devices that implement the proposed ADMM can be, compared with the classical least squares (LS) data-centralized approach. A proof of concept with three scenarios is included: the first two scenarios feature a commercial PA driven by 5G-NR signals with a bandwidth of 30 MHz, and the third scenario involves a commercial Doherty PA with a 100-MHz signal. In a first scenario, experimental results show that an ADMM implementation of a digital predistorter can achieve the same performance as the classical LS solution. The benefits of the proposed regularization are examined by assessing ADMM in a second scenario characterized by significant numerical instabilities. Finally, the robustness of the technique is illustrated through the linearization of the Doherty PA with a 100-MHz OFDM signal.

3. A Bivariate Volterra Series Model for the Design of Power Amplifier Digital Predistorters

Abstract

The operation of the power amplifier (PA) in wireless transmitters presents a trade-off between linearity and power efficiency, being more efficient when the device exhibits the highest nonlinearity. Its modeling and linearization performance depend on the quality of the underlying Volterra models that are characterized by the presence of relevant terms amongst the enormous amount of regressors that these models generate. The presence of PA mechanisms that generate an internal state variable motivates the adoption of a bivariate Volterra series perspective with the aim of enhancing modeling capabilities through the inclussion of beneficial terms. In this paper, the conventional Volterra-based models are enhanced by the addition of terms, including cross products of the input signal and the new internal variable. The bivariate versions of the general full Volterra (FV) model and one of its pruned versions, referred to as the circuit-knowledge based Volterra (CKV) model, are derived by considering the signal envelope as the internal variable and applying the proposed methodology to the univariate models. A comparative assessment of the bivariate models versus their conventional counterparts is experimentally performed for the modeling of two PAs driven by a 30 MHz 5G New Radio signal: a class AB PA and a class J PA. The results for the digital predistortion of the class AB PA under a direct learning architecture reveal the benefits in linearization performance produced by the bivariate CKV model structure compared to that of the univariate CKV model.

Abstract

This work presents a strategy to upgrade models for power amplifier (PA) behavioral modeling and digital predistortion (DPD). These incomplete structures are the consequence of nonlinear order and memory depth model truncation with the purpose of reducing the demand of the limited computational resources available in standard processors. On the other hand, the alternative use of model structures pruned a priori does not guarantee that every significant term is included. To improve the limited performance of an incomplete model, a general procedure to augment its structure by incorporating significant terms is demonstrated. The sparse nature of the problem allows a successive search incorporating additional terms with higher nonlinear order and memory depth. This approach is investigated in the modeling and linearization of a commercial class AB PA operating at a compression point of about 6 dB, and a class J PA operating near saturation. Results highlight the capabilities of this upgrading procedure in the improvement of linearization capabilities of DPDs.

Abstract

The power amplifier (PA) is the most critical subsystem in terms of linearity and power efficiency. Digital predistortion (DPD) is commonly used to mitigate nonlinearities while the PA operates at levels close to saturation, where the device presents its highest power efficiency. Since the DPD is generally based on Volterra series models, its number of coefficients is high, producing ill-conditioned and over-fitted estimations. Recently, a plethora of techniques have been independently proposed for reducing their dimensionality. This paper is devoted to presenting a fair benchmark of the most relevant order reduction techniques present in the literature categorized by the following: (i) greedy pursuits, including Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP), Doubly Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (DOMP), Subspace Pursuit (SP) and Random Forest (RF); (ii) regularization techniques, including ridge regression and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO); (iii) heuristic local search methods, including hill climbing (HC) and dynamic model sizing (DMS); and (iv) global probabilistic optimization algorithms, including simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithms (GA) and adaptive Lipschitz optimization (adaLIPO). The comparison is carried out with modeling and linearization performance and in terms of runtime. The results show that greedy pursuits, particularly the DOMP, provide the best trade-off between execution time and linearization robustness against dimensionality reduction.

13. Novel bioactive collagen-polyurethane-pectin scaffolds for potential application in bone regenerative medicine

Abstract

Recently, the development of bioactive scaffolds that allow improved bone repair is of interest for hard tissue regenerative medicine strategies. The use of biopolymers with synthetic polymer represents an innovative alternative for this purpose due to its excellent capacity to mimic the bone extracellular matrix. In this work, scaffolds based on bovine tendon collagen and pectin derived from orange (Citrus sinensis) peels were designed. The surfaces were prepared by a polymeric semi-interpenetration process where linear pectin chains were interpenetrated in a polyurethane-crosslinked collagen matrix. The effect of pectin content (10–40 wt.%) on the structural, physicochemical and biological properties of this type of scaffolds was evaluated. The increment in pectin content generates amorphous, granular surfaces with interconnected porosity, improving crosslinking, decreasing swelling and accelerating its rate of degradation in physiological and proteolytic media, also promoting antibacterial capacity showing inhibition of growth of pathogens such as E. coli. Specifically, the scaffold with 20 wt.% pectin (CPc20) shows a mechanical improvement of 342 ± 12% (with respect to crosslinked collagen), allowing the mineralization of 15 ± 1.5% of carbonated apatite on its surface, showing no cytotoxic effects on fibroblasts and allowing their proliferation; in addition, it was determined that immune system cells such as human monocytes can secrete high levels of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and low levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), conditions required in the process of bone formation. These results demonstrate that these bioactive scaffolds could be applied in bone tissue regenerative medicine strategies.

Abstract

Primary agammaglobulinemia result from specific alterations in B cells, which lead to low antibody production. Diagnostic suspicion is established with a history of repeated infections, low immunoglobulins, and absence of CD19+ B lymphocytes. The diagnosis is confirmed by genetic analysis and the detection of a mutation linked to the X or autosomal recessive or dominant chromosome. In Peru, there is no literature on primary agammaglobulinemia and no reports on the genotype of patients with suspected primary agammaglobulinemia. Under this scenario, a study was performed to describe the genotype of patients with suspected primary agammaglobulinemia. Twenty (20) patients were found with mutations in the BTK gene and an autosomal recessive IGHM mutation. Thirteen (13) hereditary mutations and seven de novo mutations were found. It is concluded that the group of primary agammaglobulinemia are mostly mutations in the BTK gene, corresponding to X-linked agammaglobulinemia.

Abstract

Aim of study: To investigate the effect of subclinical mastitis (SCM) before and after first artificial insemination (AI), characterized by a somatic cell count (SCC) higher than 200×103 cell/mL, on reproductive performance including first service conception rate (FSCR) and pregnancy loss (PL) in Holstein dairy cows. Area of study: The central area of Lugo, Galicia, Spain. Material and methods: This retrospective study was conducted on herd database of a population of 80 commercial Holstein dairy cow farms. A total number of 2053 lactations were included in this study. A binary logistic regression was carried out to analyse all data. Main results: The results of this study indicated that cows that registered a SCC lower than 200×103 cell/mL within 30 days after first AI were more likely to conceive pregnancy than cows with a higher SCC (31.2% and 25.1% FSCR, respectively; OR=1.285, 95% CI=1.000-1.653). Additionally, an increased SCC neither 30 days before nor 30 days after first AI had a negative effect on prevalence of PL in dairy cows. Research highlights: These findings revealed that SCM within 30 days after first AI negatively affected FSCR, whilst 30 days before first AI did not affect it. Therefore, it could be suggested that preventing subclinical mastitis after first AI, during a critical period of 30 days, is important to maximize the reproductive performance of dairy cows.

Este trabajo pretende explorar las diferencias en sintomatología psicopatológica que puede haber en la población general adulta con o sin experiencias psicóticas (EP) en función del rango de edad. Se evaluó la presencia de EP, la sintomatología psicopatológica general y diferentes características sociodemográficas y psicosociales en 216 personas sin antecedentes psiquiátricos personales. La muestra se dividió en adultos jóvenes (18-35 años) y maduros (36-60 años). Los jóvenes mostraron una mayor expresión de EP (33,6%). Los adultos maduros con EP presentaban más sintomatología psicopatológica en las dimensiones de hostilidad-ira, somatización, depresión y ansiedad que los adultos maduros sin EP. Los adultos jóvenes con EP mostraron significativamente más síntomas en las mismas dimensiones, así como también en las dimensiones de obsesión-compulsión, ideación paranoide y psicoticismo que los participantes de esta edad sin EP. Las EP son más frecuentes en personas de 18-35 años, sin embargo, pueden estar presentes en distintos rangos de edad y podrían alertar de la presencia de niveles elevados de sintomatología afectiva y de ira-hostilidad.

19. Self-reported psychotic-like experiences: differences by age and associated psychopathology

Abstract

This study aims to explore the differences in psychopathological symptoms that may exist in the general adult population with or without psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), depending on the age range. The presence of PLEs, self-reported general psychopathological symptomatology, and different sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics were assessed in 216 participants without any record of personal psychiatric antecedents. The sample was divided into young adults (18-35 years) and mature adults (36-60 years). The young adults showed a higher expression of PLEs (33.6%). The mature adults with PLEs presented more psychopathological symptoms in the dimensions of hostility-anger, somatization, depression, and anxiety than mature adults without PLEs. Young adults with PLEs showed significantly more symptoms in the same dimensions, and in the obsession-compulsion dimensions, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism, than participants of this age without PLEs. PLEs are more frequent in people between 18-35 years old; however, PLEs can be present in different age ranges and could serve as an alert to high levels of affective and anger-hostility symptoms.

Abstract

Background: We aim to assess whether time of day modified the treatment effect in the RACECAT trial (Direct Transfer to an Endovascular Center Compared to Transfer to the Closest Stroke Center in Acute Stroke Patients With Suspected Large Vessel Occlusion Trial), a cluster-randomized trial that did not demonstrate the benefit of direct transportation to a thrombectomy-capable center versus nearest local stroke center for patients with a suspected large vessel stroke triaged in nonurban Catalonia between March 2017 and June 2020. Methods: We performed a post hoc analysis of RACECAT to evaluate if the association between initial transport routing and functional outcome differed according to trial enrollment time: daytime (8:00 am –8:59 pm ) and nighttime (9:00 pm –7:59 am ). Primary outcome was disability at 90 days, as assessed by the shift analysis on the modified Rankin Scale score, in patients with ischemic stroke. Subgroup analyses according to stroke subtype were evaluated. Results: We included 949 patients with an ischemic stroke, of whom 258 patients(27%) were enrolled during nighttime. Among patients enrolled during nighttime, direct transport to a thrombectomy-capable center was associated with lower degrees of disability at 90 days (adjusted common odds ratio [acOR], 1.620 [95% CI, 1.020–2.551]); no significant difference between trial groups was present during daytime (acOR, 0.890 [95% CI, 0.680–1.163]; P interaction =0.014). Influence of nighttime on the treatment effect was only evident in patients with large vessel occlusion(daytime, acOR 0.766 [95% CI, 0.548–1.072]; nighttime, acOR, 1.785 [95% CI, 1.024–3.112] ; P interaction P interaction >0.1 for all comparisons). We observed longer delays in alteplase administration, interhospital transfers, and mechanical thrombectomy initiation during nighttime in patients allocated to local stroke centers. Conclusions: Among patients evaluated during nighttime for a suspected acute severe stroke in non-urban areas of Catalonia, direct transport to a thrombectomy-capable center was associated with lower degrees of disability at 90 days. This association was only evident in patients with confirmed large vessel occlusion on vascular imaging. Time delays in alteplase administration and interhospital transfers might mediate the observed differences in clinical outcome. Abstract

The use and application of CAD, CAE, CAM systems are increasingly necessary in the industry, (Arriaga Segundo, 1999) To meet the needs of the accelerated industrial transformation that is taking place in industrially developed and developing countries, it is essential that those involved in the Mexican metalworking industry. In the technological area, there is a machining center for 4 axes, of which only 3 are used, due to not having a chuck for the 4th axis, which is necessary to manufacture more complex parts, and to prepare future engineers in the use of this technology. For this reason, an acrylic mandrel prototype was designed and manufactured using CAD, CAM and CAE technology. To demonstrate its application and usefulness in the manufacture of complex parts. First, the components that make it up were designed in CAD software: clamps, "worm" screw and casing, to later carry out the finite analysis in CAE software, computer-aided engineering, ending with the simulation and manufacturing in CAM software. This will validate and demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing the mandrel in steel, with existing resources and with a design that best suits the requirements.

Abstract

El objetivo del estudio fue analizar las características sociolaborales, el estrés percibido, las estrategias de afrontamiento y la sintomatología psicopatológica de profesionales sanitarios y la relación entre ellas, durante la pandemia de Covid-19. Participaron 135 sanitarios (médicos, enfermeros y otros), quienes obtuvieron valores superiores a los datos normativos en las puntuaciones medias de las medidas de estrés percibido, ansiedad fóbica y ansiedad. El grupo de médicos mostró un nivel de ansiedad y somatización más bajo que el grupo formado por otros profesionales sanitarios. Ser profesional médico, tener un menor grado de estrés subjetivo percibido, más afrontamiento activo y menos afrontamiento pasivo eran predictores significativos de la presencia de menos síntomas psicopatológicos. La descripción del perfil del profesional sanitario español con un menor riesgo de mostrar sintomatología psicopatológica puede ser de utilidad para identificar a grupos de sanitarios con mayor vulnerabilidad psicológica. Los hallazgos sugieren factores psicológicos específicos de interés a considerar en las intervenciones destinadas al abordaje de las necesidades de salud mental de esta población en el contexto sanitario generado por la Covid-19.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the socio-occupational features, perceived stress, coping strategies and self-reported psychopathological symptoms of different groups of health professionals and the relationship among these variables during the Covid-19 pandemic. One hundred and thirty-five healthcare workers participated (medical staff, nursing staff and other health professionals), who obtained higher values than the normative data in the mean scores of perceived stress, phobic anxiety, and anxiety measures. The medical staff group showed a lower level of anxiety and somatization than the other group of healthcare professionals. Being a medical professional, having a lower level of perceived subjective stress, a greater proportion of active coping and lesser passive coping were significant predictors of fewer psychopathological symptoms. The description of a health professional profile with a lower risk of showing psychopathological symptoms can help identify healthcare groups with greater psychological vulnerability. The findings suggest specific psychological factors of interest to consider in interventions aimed at addressing the mental health needs of this population in the health context generated by Covid-19.

Abstract

Background: We aim to compare the outcome of patients from urban areas, where the referral center is able to perform thrombectomy, with patients from nonurban areas enrolled in the RACECAT trial (Direct Transfer to an Endovascular Center Compared to Transfer to the Closest Stroke Center in Acute Stroke Patients With Suspected Large Vessel Occlusion). Methods: Patients with suspected large vessel occlusion stroke, as evaluated by a Rapid Arterial Occlusion Evaluation score of ≥5, from urban catchment areas of thrombectomy-capable centers during RACECAT trial enrollment period were included in the Stroke Code Registry of Catalonia. Primary outcome was disability at 90 days, as assessed by the shift analysis on the modified Rankin Scale score, in patients with an ischemic stroke. Secondary outcomes included mortality at 90 days, rate of thrombolysis and thrombectomy, time from onset to thrombolysis, and thrombectomy initiation. Propensity score matching was used to assemble a cohort of patients with similar characteristics. Results: The analysis included 1369 patients from nonurban areas and 2502 patients from urban areas. We matched 920 patients with an ischemic stroke from urban areas and nonurban areas based on their propensity scores. Patients with ischemic stroke from nonurban areas had higher degrees of disability at 90 days (median [interquartle range] modified Rankin Scale score, 3 [2–5] versus 3 [1–5], common odds ratio, 1.25 [95% CI, 1.06–1.48]); the observed average effect was only significant in patients with large vessel stroke (common odds ratio, 1.36 [95% CI, 1.08–1.65]). Mortality rate was similar between groups(odds ratio, 1.02 [95% CI, 0.81–1.28]). Patients from nonurban areas had higher odds of receiving thrombolysis (odds ratio, 1.36 [95% CI, 1.16–1.67]), lower odds of receiving thrombectomy(odds ratio, 0.61 [95% CI, 0.51–0.75]), and longer time from stroke onset to thrombolysis (mean difference 38 minutes [95% CI, 25–52]) and thrombectomy(mean difference 66 minutes [95% CI, 37–95]). Conclusions: In Catalonia, Spain, patients with large vessel occlusion stroke triaged in nonurban areas had worse neurological outcomes than patients from urban areas, where the referral center was able to perform thrombectomy. Interventions aimed at improving organizational practices and the development of thrombectomy capabilities in centers located in remote areas should be pursued. El COVID-19 ocasiona manifestaciones clínicas diversas, las manifestaciones oftalmológicas se presentan como conjuntivitis virales. Luego del ingreso del virus, se producen complejas rutas de respuesta inmunológica. Se hallan receptores para el virus en células de la superficie ocular, con predisposición a infección local. Es probable que luego del ingreso del virus se presente una respuesta limitada de la inflamación ocular, el cual podría estar mediado por el enfoque de privilegio inmune.

Abstract

La fabricación aditiva (AM), y más específicamente la impresión 3D, ha comenzado una revolución de la industria de la manufactura al proporcionar capacidades de producción para piezas que eran imposibles de fabricar hace algunos años. Una tecnología bastante reciente, desarrollada por Markforged, ha elevado estas capacidades a un nuevo nivel al permitir la impresión de compuestos de matriz polimérica con refuerzo continuo de fibra. Sin embargo, por ser este un método nuevo de fabricación, no existe un modelo consolidado para predecir las características mecánicas ni los modos de falla que presentan al estar sometidas a cargas. El presente trabajo recoge los estudios sobre el daño y falla progresiva en materiales compuestos de fibras largas producidos por manufactura aditiva.

Aim of study: To evaluate tubal patency in repeat breeder Holstein cows with the purpose of estimating the frequency of oviduct obstruction as a cause of the repeat breeding syndrome. Area of study: Lugo (NW Spain) Material and methods: In 50 repeat breeding cows, a solution of the dye phenol-sulphon-phthalein (PSP) was instilled into one uterine horn with the aid of a balloon catheter. Urine was collected 15, 25 and 45 min post-PSP infusion. Urine of a reddish color was used as indicator of tubal patency, as the PSP had passed across the oviduct into the abdominal cavity and was eliminated in urine. The other oviduct was evaluated on a different day. Main results: Of the 50 cows tested, 44% had some degree of oviduct obstruction: 4% had bilateral oviduct occlusion, 20% unilateral oviduct occlusion, 16% bilateral oviduct stenosis and 4% unilateral oviduct stenosis. No significant relationship could be established between tubal impermeability and postpartum reproductive or metabolic diseases. Research highlights: Tubal stenosis or occlusions were frequent and they are likely to contribute to the repeat breeding syndrome in dairy cows; thus, tubal patency should be routinely evaluated in repeat breeders. The PSP test is easy to perform, well tolerated by animals, and allows evaluating both oviducts separately.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to verify the importance of postpartum serum levels of certain metabolic markers as risk factors for subclinical endometritis (SE). Ninety-four Holstein cows were included in the study, and examinations were carried out between 30–45 days postpartum. Rectal palpation, vaginoscopy, transrectal ultrasound, endometrial cytology, and blood sample collections were performed. The percentage of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (%PMN) on the endometrium was evaluated, as well as serum levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, albumin, hepatic enzymes, urea, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and β-hydroxybutyrate acid (BHBA). Samples with ≥8% PMN were classified as positive to subclinical endometritis. Abstract

The preparation of hydrogels based on biopolymers like collagen and gum arabic gives a chance to provide novel options that can be used in biomedical field. Through a polymeric semi-interpenetration technique, collagen-based polymeric matrices can be associated with gum arabic while controlling its physicochemical and biological properties. To create novel hydrogels with their potential use in the treatment of wounds, the semi-interpenetration process, altering the concentration (0–40% by wt) of gum arabic in a collagen matrix is explored. The ability of gum arabic to create intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the collagen matrix enables the development of semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks (semi-IPN)-based hydrogels with a faster gelation time and higher crosslinking. Amorphous granular surfaces with linked porosity are present in matrices with 30% (by wt) of gum arabic, enhancing the storage modulus and thermal degradation resistance. The hydrogels swell to very high extent in hydrolytic and proteolytic environments, good hemocompatibility, and suppression of growth of pathogens like E. coli, and all it is enhanced by gum arabic included them, in addition to enabling the controlled release of ketorolac. The chemical composition of theses semi-IPN matrices have no deleterious effects on monocytes or fibroblasts, promoting their proliferation, and lowering alpha tumor necrosis factor (α-TNF) secretion in human monocytes. Abstract

The independent practice of clinical psychology has experimented recent changes. Spain has achieved to regulate the current professional situation of the different figures of clinical psychologists mainly in three arms: 1) by authorizing those psychologists who met the required legal criteria to continue with their clinical practice, 2) by creating the Master in General Health Psychology (MGHP) and 3) by maintaining the tasks and public scope for Psychologist Specialized in Clinical Psychology (PSCP) This manuscript aims to summarize the process for the regulation of clinical and health psychology in Spain and to compare it to other European and North American countries. Discussion about the quality, benefits and future ambitions of the MGHP programs have been made.

Abstract

IntroductionOver the years, the most common methods for monitoring reproductive health in cattle have varied from transrectal palpation to B-mode ultrasonography. Nowadays, some portable ultrasound equipment includes the Doppler mode. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of the different methods to assess corpus luteum (CL) functionality.MethodsIn Experiment 1, 53 Holstein lactating cows undergoing a synchronization protocol were examined via transrectal palpation and B-mode scanning. Measurements for the largest diameter (LAD) and subjective size of CL (SCLS) were collected. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis and ROC Curves. In Experiment 2, 30 Holstein non-lactating cows with a CL were administered PGF2α and examined several times after injection, first in B-mode and then with Power Doppler. Measurements for LAD, CL area (CLA) and subjective and objective CL blood flow were collected. Blood samples were taken in both experiments to determine P4 concentration. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis and the GLM repeated measures test.ResultsResults for Experiment 1 showed that LAD was more accurate than SCLS. In Experiment 2, CLA was the best measurement to assess CL function, although both subjective and objective CL blood flow offer accurate information 24 h after PGF2α administration.DiscussionConsequently, ultrasonography provides more accurate information about CL function than transrectal palpation. Although CLA seems to be an earlier indicator of luteal function than blood flow, 24 h after the onset of luteolysis, both parameters are valid.

Abstract

In the last decade, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) has gained popularity for allowing the fabrication of pieces with complex shapes. The final quality of the pieces is strongly linked to the shape, size and surface finish of the strands deposited successively, which themselves depend on the printing parameters and extruded material properties. In this work, we present an experimental characterization of an extruded and deposited single strand of Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA), by means of high-speed visualization of the bead region between the substrate and the nozzle, where the molten polymer is still in liquid phase. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model proposed in literature, and, based on isothermal and viscous flow assumptions, is validated with this data in terms of strand height and meniscus shape. The characteristics of the printed layer are also confronted to the measurements of the solidified strands by microscopy, with a good agreement. The focus on high printing speeds allows extending the conclusions of previous studies. Regarding the surface finish, the roughness patterns detected on the printed strands are correlated to the velocity fluctuations of the printing head. The CFD model does not capture those thickness variations, however, due to not accounting for solidification.

Abstract

Etiology, transmission and protection: Transmission of HIV, the causative agent of AIDS, occurs predominantly through bodily fluids. Factors that significantly alter the risk of HIV transmission include male circumcision, condom use, high viral load, and the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases. Pathology/Symptomatology: HIV infects preferentially CD4+ T lymphocytes, and Monocytes. Because of their central role in regulating the immune response, depletion of CD4+ T cells renders the infected individual incapable of adequately responding to microorganisms otherwise inconsequential. Epidemiology, incidence and prevalence: New HIV infections affect predominantly young heterosexual women and homosexual men. While the mortality rates of AIDS related causes have decreased globally in recent years due to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) treatment, a vaccine remains an elusive goal. Treatment and curability: For those afflicted HIV infection remains a serious illness. Nonetheless, the use of advanced therapeutics have transformed a dire scenario into a chronic condition with near average life spans. When to apply those remedies appears to be as important as the remedies themselves. The high rate of HIV replication and the ability to generate variants are central to the viral survival strategy and major barriers to be overcome. Molecular mechanisms of infection: In this review, we assemble new details on the molecular events from the attachment of the virus, to the assembly and release of the viral progeny. Yet, much remains to be learned as understanding of the molecular mechanisms used in viral replication and the measures engaged in the evasion of immune surveillance will be important to develop effective interventions to address the global HIV pandemic.

Abstract

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by pathogenic variants in NF1. Recently, NF1 testing has been included as a clinical criterion for NF1 diagnosis. Additionally, preconception genetic counselling in patients with NF1 focuses on a 50% risk of transmitting the familial variant as the risk of having a sporadic NF1 is considered the same as the general population.Methods829 individuals, 583 NF1 sporadic cases and 246 patients with NF1 with documented family history, underwent genetic testing for NF1. Genotyping and segregation analysis of NF1 familial variants was determined by microsatellite analysis and NF1 sequencing.ResultsThe mutational analysis of NF1 in 154 families with two or more affected cases studied showed the co-occurrence of two different NF1 germline pathogenic variants in four families. The estimated mutation rate in those families was 3.89×10–3, 20 times higher than the NF1 mutation rate (~2×10−4) (p=0.0008). Furthermore, the co-occurrence of two different NF1 germline pathogenic variants in these families was 1:39, 60 times the frequency of sporadic NF1 (1:2500) (p=0.003). In all cases, the de novo NF1 pathogenic variant was present in a descendant of an affected male. In two cases, variants were detected in the inherited paternal wild-type allele.ConclusionsOur results, together with previous cases reported, suggest that the offspring of male patients with NF1 could have an increased risk of experiencing de novo NF1 pathogenic variants. This observation, if confirmed in additional cohorts, could have relevant implications for NF1 genetic counselling, family planning and NF1 genetic testing.

Abstract

Una de las industrias más destacadas de la economía mexicana es la restaurantera. Su importancia, debido a su número de empresas, creación de empleos y emprendimientos, ha ocasionado que se genere un alto índice de competitividad. Esto provoca que se busquen estrategias para mejorar la calidad del servicio que ofrecen, con el propósito de retener y atraer clientes. El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar los factores que conforman la percepción de la calidad en el servicio en un restaurante mexicano. Para ello, se utilizó el instrumento DINESERV, mediante un enfoque cuantitativo y un análisis factorial confirmatorio. Los resultados mostraron que el instrumento DINESERV es válido para restaurantes mexicanos. Asimismo, se detectaron los factores que integran el servicio al cliente, enfatizando los aspectos de tangibilidad, confiabilidad, respuesta y empatía. Características como personal competente y con experiencia, tener siempre presente los intereses del cliente y la apariencia de la vestimenta y limpieza del personal de servicio son elementos clave para que el restaurante genere mayor satisfacción en sus clientes.

48. Tailoring biocompatibility of composite scaffolds of collagen/guar gum with metal–organic frameworks

Abstract

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are microporous materials with high potential for biomedical applications. They are useful as drug delivery systems, antibacterials, and biosensors. Recently, composite materials comprised of polymer matrixes and MOFs have gained relevance in the biomedical field due to their high potential as materials to accelerate wound healing. In this work, we studied the potential applications of composite hydrogels containing MgMOF74, CaMOF74, and Zn(Atz)(Py). The composite hydrogels are biodegradable, being completely degraded after 15 days by the action of collagenase and papain. The composites showed high biocompatibility reaching cell viabilities up to 165.3 ± 8.6% and 112.3 ± 12.8% for porcine fibroblasts and human monocytes, respectively. Abstract

Natural gums based on polysaccharides such as guar gum, gum arabic and xanthan gum possess structure and properties that have been used for various applications in pharmaceutical, food and biomedicine. Due to their high presence of hydroxyl and/or carboxylate groups in their glycosidic skeletons, they can retain water molecules, forming matrices in the hydrogel state. These hydrogels have high biocompatibility that has been exploited in the biomedical field in strategies as controlled release of therapeutic agents, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and modulation of cell growth. The objective of this review is to detail the chemical characteristics of natural gums and their use for the design of different hydrogel systems for applications in biomedicine.
