Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is considered by WHO as one of the most important threats to public health in the twenty-first century. According to forecasts, by 2025, many first-line antimicrobials will lose their effectiveness and the «post-antibiotic era» will begin. Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter spp. and representatives of the genus Mycobacterium are classified by the American Society of Infectious Diseases as microorganisms that play a predominant role in the development of infections associated with medical care and leading to fatal consequences. The review highlights the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and many variants of microbial resistance to antibiotics. Knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of the formation of resistance of microorganisms allows us to develop strategic directions for overcoming it. The search for new ways to prevent and overcome the formation of resistance of pathogens to antibiotics is an extremely important task of modern medical science. The effectiveness of hybrid antibiotics associated with chemical compounds with various specific effects is presented. The use of the main active factor of the bacterial virus, endolysin, both in its pure form and as part of homodimers, for example, lysoprotein, which is a complex of endolysin with human immunoglobulins, is considered promising. Phage therapy of the future is a personalized phage therapy that requires the creation of a library or bank of phages.

Abstract

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a global medical and socioeconomic problem. Nosocomial infections occupy one of the leading places among the causes of death in the Russian Federation. About 60–70% of all nosocomial infections are associated with the use of medical implants of various profiles. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, various types of streptococci, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, enterococci (Enterococcus faecalis), Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and representatives of the genus Acinetobacter are highly likely to be found in biofilms of medical supplies. A distinctive feature of microbes that cause HAIs is poly- or even pan-resistance of microbes to recommended antimicrobials. The search for methods and means to overcome is a priority task of modern medicine. Phage therapy seems to be one of the logical and promising ways to combat bacteria that are resistant to conventional therapy. The article outlines the advantages and disadvantages of phage therapy, provides an overview of the successful use of mono- and combined preparations of bacteriophages in the experiment and clinic, as well as modern directions for the use of bacteriophages not only for therapeutic, but also for prophylactic purposes, based on the latest achievements of genetic engineering and biotechnology.

6. CdSe With Mixed Zincblende and Wurtzite Phases Grown on Lattice-Matched InAs Substrates Using Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Abstract

The II–VI compound semiconductor CdSe, which has both zincblende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) phases with bandgap energies of 1.67 and 1.74 eV, respectively, is an ideal candidate material for the top cell in a tandem solar cell with a Si bottom cell to achieve higher power conversion efficiency. In this work, molecular beam epitaxy growth of CdSe thin films on lattice-matched InAs(100) substrates reveals a single-phase ZB structure with high crystallinity and a low defect density. In contrast, all CdSe layers grown on InAs(111)B substrates have mixed ZB and WZ phases in coexistence, as confirmed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The PL efficiencies of the CdSe layers grown on (111)B substrates are substantially lower than those grown on (100) substrates. This result is attributed to defects at the boundaries between the two different phases. Postgrowth annealing of CdSe layers grown on InAs(111)B at 250–450 °C converts most of the CdSe ZB material into the WZ phase, as evidenced by improved PL efficiency and TEM images. Density functional theory simulations confirm that the formation energy difference between the ZB and WZ phases for CdSe is very small compared with other conventional compound semiconductors, which is in good agreement with the experimental observations.

14. Nanosized Core-Shell Ni/Au System and its Properties

Abstract

Core-shell Ni/Au nanoparticles are synthesized by successive reduction of aqueous solutions of nickel sulfate and chloroauric acid by sodium tetrahydroborate. Results of analysis of absorption spectra show that the position of the plasmon absorption peak (507 nm) for Au-shell (1 nm) corresponds to the one for individual gold nanoparticles of the same size. Discussion of the published results about the blocking temperature TB in the core-shell systems, synthesized by different methods, and obtained results (TB = 14 ± 0.5 K for nickel core), and HRTEM and elemental analysis results allowed to show that there is linear dependence lgТВ – lgD and ТВ – V. It is estimated the average coefficient of magnetic anisotropy K ≈ 4.5∙103 J/m3). For Ni-core with special small sizes in the ferromagnetic state there is no magnetization saturation in the field up to 20 kOe. This is the typical behavior for them in the superparamagnetic state also.

15. Coverage control of mobile sensor networks with directional sensing

Abstract

Control design of mobile sensors for coverage problem is addressed in this paper. The mobile sensors have non-linear dynamics and directional sensing properties which mean the sensing performance is also affected by the pointing directions of the sensors. Different from the standard optimal coverage problem where sensors are assumed to be omni-directional ones, orientation angles of the directional sensors should also be controlled, other than the position control, to achieve the coverage purpose. Considering also the non-linear dynamics of the mobile sensors, new control methodology is necessarily developed for the coverage problem with directional sensors. In the approach proposed, an innovative gradient based non-smooth motion controller is designed for the mobile sensors with unicycle dynamics. With the proposed controllers, the states of sensors will always stay in an positive invariant set where the gradient of the performance valuation function is well-defined if they are initialized within this set. Moreover, the sensors' states are proved to converge to some critical point where the gradient is zero. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed coverage control strategy.

Abstract

Rechargeable aqueous batteries are considered to be one of the most effective energy storage technologies to balance the cost-efficiency, safety, and energy/power demands. The further progress of aqueous batteries with high energy density is needed to meet the ever-increasing energy-storage demands. This review highlights the strategies proposed so far to pursue the high energy density aqueous batteries, including the aspects of the electrolytes (from concentrated to dilute), the electrode chemistry (from inserted to converted), the cathode materials (from inorganic to organic), the anode materials (from compound to metallic), and the battery configurations (from integrated to decoupled). Critical appraisals of the emerging electrochemistry are presented for addressing the key issues in boosting the energy densities. Finally, the authors render insights into the future development of high-energy aqueous batteries.

Abstract

For improving lodging resistance and increasing grain yield in wheat in the Yellow-Huai River Basin in China, different sowing modes have been investigated. Conventionally, the small-flat-plot sowing mode has been adopted in wheat cultivation. However, this sowing mode leads to heavy lodging and low land use efficiency. In this study, a new sowing mode, high-low-plot sowing mode with two more rows sowed on the high plot, was investigated. Two cultivars, Hengguan 35 and Jimai 44 were used for two seasonal field experiments from 2018 to 2020. The results showed that grain yield improved with the high-low sowing mode by as much as 25% since more spikes per unit area were observed concomitant with reduced stem lodging. The grain yield increase was mainly due to the enhanced spike number per m2, while the lodging resistance was improved through the lowered plant height and the center of gravity height. This research proves that the high-low-plot sowing mode is an improved sowing mode for producing greater grain yield with better lodging resistance in the wheat production area in northern China.

Abstract

Decentralized power systems are commonly used in high-speed trains. However, many parameters in decentralized power systems are uncertain and inevitably have errors. We present a reasoning method based on the interval numbers for decentralized power systems in high-speed trains. Uncertain parameters and their unavoidable errors are quantitatively described by interval numbers. We also define generalized linear equations with interval numbers (LAIs), which can be used to describe the movement of the train. Furthermore, it is proven that the zero sets of LAIs are convex. Therefore, the inside of the fault-tolerance area can be formed by their vertexes and edges and represented by linear inequalities. Consequently, we can judge whether the system is working properly by verifying that the current system state is in the fault-tolerance area. Finally, a fault-tolerance area is obtained, which can be determined by linear equations with an interval number, and we test the correctness of the fault-tolerance area through large-scale random test cases.

Abstract

Genetic alterations in signaling pathways that control cell-cycle progression, apoptosis, and cell growth are common hallmarks of cancer, but the extent, mechanisms, and co-occurrence of alterations in these pathways differ between individual tumors and tumor types. Using mutations, copy-number changes, mRNA expression, gene fusions and DNA methylation in 9,125 tumors profiled by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), we analyzed the mechanisms and patterns of somatic alterations in ten canonical pathways: cell cycle, Hippo, Myc, Notch, Nrf2, PI-3-Kinase/Akt, RTK-RAS, TGFβ signaling, p53 and β-catenin/Wnt. We charted the detailed landscape of pathway alterations in 33 cancer types, stratified into 64 subtypes, and identified patterns of co-occurrence and mutual exclusivity. Eighty-nine percent of tumors had at least one driver alteration in these pathways, and 57% percent of tumors had at least one alteration potentially targetable by currently available drugs. Thirty percent of tumors had multiple targetable alterations, indicating opportunities for combination therapy. An integrated analysis of genetic alterations in 10 signaling pathways in >9,000 tumors profiled by TCGA highlights significant representation of individual and co-occurring actionable alterations in these pathways, suggesting opportunities for targeted and combination therapies. 30. Heat-pulse method for soil water content measurement: influence of the specific heat of the soil solids

Abstract

The heat-pulse method measures soil volumetric water content ([theta]) based on the linear relationship between soil volumetric heat capacity. (C) and [theta]. Previous work suggested that this method was more appropriate for determining change of [theta] rather than its absolute value. In this study, we demonstrate that the heat-pulse method can give accurate [theta] estimation when values for the specific heat of the soil solids [c.sub.s] are determined using the heat-pulse method. Heat-pulse measurements were performed on packed columns of three soils with a wide range of bulk density ([[rho].sub.b]) and [theta]. When the commonly used [c.sub.s] value (0.725 kJ [kg.sup.-3] [K.sup.-1] was used, the heat-pulse method overestimated [theta] by 0.052 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3] on average. However, when [c.sub.s] values determined from heat-pulse measurements on oven-dried soil were used, the heat-pulse method provided accurate [theta] results (-0.006 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3] average error). Using soil-specific, heat-pulse determined [c.sub.s] values also reduced the average root mean square error (RMSE) in [theta] for the three soils from 0.061 to 0.039 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3].

Abstract

1.The role of acetate in lipogenesis of chickens remains largely unknown. This trial investigated the effect of sodium acetate (SA) on chicken fat metabolism via in vivo and in vitro experiments. 2.The results indicated that supplementation of SA (1.0 g/kg feed) showed marginal to moderate stimulation on the area of the abdominal fat cells and triglyceride (TG) content in liver and adipose tissues. It increased the transcription of some genes involved in fat synthesis and deposition, but did not affect free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) expression in either liver or abdominal fat. 3. In cultured hepatocytes treated with 0.01 mM to 5 mM SA, although mRNA levels of ACC1, PPAR, SREBP-1 c, and FFAR2 were upregulated with SA at certain concentrations, TG content and protein expression of lipogenic genes and FFAR2 were not altered at any dosages. In adipogenic differentiation of preadipocytes, high concentrations of SA (5 mM) exhibited significant increments in TG content and accumulated fat droplets, associated with stimulated transcription of FAS, LPL, AD, FABP4, and FFAR2, as well as elevated protein expression of FABP4 and FFAR2. 4. The results showed that adipocytes were more sensitive to acetate than hepatocytes in chickens. While acetate played a minor role in hepatic fat metabolism, it promoted lipogenesis in adipocytes via FFAR2 with the involvement of FAS, LPL, and FABP4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

© 2019 American Chemical Society. Electrode materials that act through the electrochemical conversion mechanism, such as metal selenides, have been considered as promising anode candidates for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), although their fast capacity attenuation and inadequate electrical conductivity are impeding their practical application. In this work, these issues are addressed through the efficient fabrication of MnSe nanoparticles inside porous carbon hierarchical architectures for evaluation as anode materials for LIBs. Density functional theory simulations indicate that there is a completely irreversible phase transformation during the initial cycle, and the high structural reversibility of β-MnSe provides a low energy barrier for the diffusion of lithium ions. Electron localization function calculations demonstrate that the phase transformation leads to high charge transfer kinetics and a favorable lithium ion diffusion coefficient. Benefitting from the phase transformation and unique structural engineering, the MnSe/C chestnut-like structures with boosted conductivity deliver enhanced lithium storage performance (885 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 after 200 cycles), superior cycling stability (a capacity of 880 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 1000 cycles), and outstanding rate performance (416 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1).

This paper proposes a sensing system that automatically extracts and fuses sensory features such as body motion features, facial expressions, and gaze features, further assessing the children behaviours by mapping them to therapist-specified behavioural classes. Experimental results show that the developed system has a capability of interpreting characteristic data of children with ASD, thus has the potential to increase the autonomy of robots under the supervision of a therapist and enhance the quality of the digital description of children with ASD. The research outcomes pave the way to a feasible machine-assisted system for their behaviour assessment.

41. Communication Connectivity in Multi-agent Systems with Multiple Uncooperative Agents

Abstract

We consider a multi-agent system that consists of two group of agents: clients and routers. Clients move according to their own agenda. Routers' control policy needs to be designed to maintain communication connectivity for others. A control policy is designed for the routers to maintain the communication connectivity between clients. The control policy consists of periodically computing desired positions in a distributed manner and then steering the routers to those desired positions. First, desired positions of routers are determined by an optimization problem which minimizes the length of the longest edge connecting a client and a router on a tree corresponding to the communication relationship between agents. Then, the routers are steered to those desired positions by motion control. Simulations are done assuming that all routers are quadrotor drones to illustrate the results.

Abstract

We describe a distributed three dimensional (3-D) iterative reconstruction library for quantitative single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). This library includes 3-D projector-backprojector pairs (PBPs) and distributed 3-D iterative reconstruction algorithms. The 3-D PBPs accurately and efficiently model various combinations of the image degrading factors including attenuation, detector response and scatter response. These PBPs were validated by comparing projection data computed using the projectors with that from direct Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The distributed 3-D iterative algorithms spread the projection-backprojection operations for all the projection angles over a heterogeneous network of single or multi-processor computers to reduce the reconstruction time. Based on a master/slave paradigm, these distributed algorithms provide dynamic load balancing and fault tolerance. The distributed algorithms were verified by comparing images reconstructed using both the distributed and non-distributed algorithms. Computation times for distributed 3-D reconstructions running on up to 4 identical processors were reduced by a factor approximately 80-90% times the number of the processors participating, compared to those for non-distributed 3-D reconstructions running on a single processor. When combined with faster affordable computers, this library provides an efficient means for implementing accurate reconstruction and compensation methods to improve quality and quantitative accuracy in SPECT images.

Abstract

We have previously developed a method, slab derived scatter estimation (SDSE), for quickly and accurately modeling the asymmetric, spatially varying scatter response function in uniformly attenuating objects with convex surfaces. This model has been implemented in a projector-backprojector that, when combined with iterative reconstruction techniques, provides accurate scatter compensation in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). These iterative reconstruction based scatter compensation techniques have the advantage that they use all detected photons, avoiding the noise amplification occurring with subtraction based schemes. In addition, scatter compensation with iterative reconstruction does not involve the use of arbitrary adjustable parameters. In this paper we present a new fast algorithm for implementing SDSE that reduces computation time by a factor of 16 compared to a direct implementation. Projection data computed with the new algorithm compare well with that from Monte Carlo simulations. When combined with faster computers and iterative reconstruction algorithms that converge rapidly, this fast projector-backprojector pair makes iterative reconstruction based scatter compensation feasible.

British Machine Vision Conference 2018 (Newcastle upon Tyne, 3rd - 6th September 2018), Item does not contain fulltext, Eye center localization has been an active research topic for decades due to its important biological properties, which indicates human's visual focus of attention. However, accurate eye center localization still remains challenging due to the high degree appearance variation caused by different kinds of viewing angles, illumination conditions, occlusions and head pose. This paper proposes a hierarchical adaptive convolution method (HAC) to localize the eye center accurately while consuming low computational cost. It mainly utilizes the dramatic illumination changes between the iris and sclera. More specifically, novel hierarchical kernels are designed to convolute the eye images and a differential operation is applied on the adjacent convolution results to generate various response maps. The final eye center is localized by searching the maximum response value among the response maps. Experimental results on several publicly available datasets demonstrate that HAC outperforms the start-of-the-art methods by a large margin. 49. Effect of lncRNA-BLACAT1 on drug resistance of non-small cell lung cancer cells in DDP chemotherapy by regulating cyclin D1 expression.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of long non-coding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA)-bladder cancer associated transcript 1 (BLACAT1) on the drug resistance of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells in cisplatin (DDP) chemotherapy by regulating the expression of Cyclin D1. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analysis of the lncRNA expression profiles in 483 cases of NSCLC tissues and 347 cases of cancer-adjacent tissues in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database revealed that lncRNA-BLACAT1 was differentially expressed in NSCLC and related to prognosis. In order to further study its mechanism of action on DDP-resistant cells, the expression level of lncRNA-BLACAT1 in normal human lung bronchial epithelial cell line BEAS-2B, NSCLC cell line A549, and DDP-resistant cell line A549 (A549/DDP) was detected by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). LncRNA-BLACAT1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) (si-BLACAT1) and lncRNA-BLACAT1 negative control (siNC) were transfected into A549/DPP cells. Then, qPCR was carried out to detect the changes in the expression of lncRNA-BLACAT1 before and after transfection. Thereafter, cell cycle and cell growth rate were detected by flow cytometry and the cell growth curve. Besides, the changes in cell migration, cell apoptosis, and Cyclin D1 were detected via wound healing assay, flow cytometry, and Western blotting (WB). RESULTS: In GEO database, lncRNA-BLACAT1 was significantly overexpressed in NSCLC (p<0.05), and the prognosis of NSCLC in BLACAT1 low-expression group was better than that in the BLACAT1 high-expression group (p<0.0001). Compared with that in BEAS-2B cells, BLACAT messenger RNA (mRNA) was notably highly expressed in A549 cells (p<0.05), and compared with that in A549 cells, BLACAT1 mRNA in A549/DPP was significantly highly expressed in A549/DDP cells (p<0.05). Additionally, in comparison with that in the siNC group, the content of lncRNA-BLACAT1 in si-BLACAT1 group was remarkably decreased (p<0.01). Moreover, flow cytometry detection of cell cycle revealed that compared with those in si-NC group, G0/G1 phase was markedly prolonged and S phase was shortened in si-BLACAT1 group. MTS assay manifested that the absorbance at 450 nm in si-BLACAT1 group was evidently decreased on the 3rd day compared with that in the si-NC group (p<0.05), and the difference between the two groups was the most significant on the 5th day (p<0.001). According to wound healing assay, compared with those in si-NC group, the distance between cells became larger, the cell migration ability was remarkably weakened (p<0.05), and cell apoptosis was prominently reduced in si-BLACAT1 group (p<0.05). WB results showed that compared with si-NC group, si-BLACAT1 group had significantly reduced Cyclin D1 (p<0.05) CONCLUSIONS: LncRNA-BLACAT1 regulates the expression of Cyclin D1, reduces the malignant phenotype of drug-resistant cells, and increases the sensitivity of lung cancer cells to DDP.
