PurposeThe purpose of this research was to explore managers' perceptions related to the emerging needs, roles, values, responsibilities and commitments of millennials in the multi-generational workplace, and to determine how managers may effectively recognize and use millennial contributions to enhance the organizational culture and infrastructure.Design/methodology/approachThis qualitative, narrative inquiry study utilized semi-structured interviews to capture collective insights of managers who lead millennials within multi-generational teams. All researchers used an interview protocol with each participant to maintain integrity. Data analysis included the creation of a code manual which was developed utilizing the first five interviews. The code manual included definitions, descriptions and exemplar text and was then used to code all remaining interviews.FindingsData are presented through three key areas of exploration: The contributions of millennials in multi-generational workplaces, the evolution of managerial views of millennials and the tactics managers use for millennial management in multi-generational teams.Originality/valueScholarly literature has clearly presented perceived qualities millennials bring to the workplace, including poor communication, advanced technology skills, overconfidence, and a need for work–life balance. This study seeks to provide an understanding of the generation, through the lens of their managers.

Although the associated mortality from acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is declining, stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and disability within the United States. Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is the standard of care for AIS in which patient outcomes remain dependent upon early, rapid, and efficient treatment. Due to the urgent nature of EVT, evidence-based safety measures were not completed by the nurses participating in emergent stroke care, breakdowns in teamwork and communication occurred, and patient safety was compromised. This process improvement project was undertaken to evaluate if communication and teamwork would improve through the implementation of evidence-based role delineation during emergent EVT, which in turn would lead to increased efficiency leading to improved door-to-groin puncture time (DTGP). The project was implemented in an interventional radiology department at a primary stroke center in Arizona. The participating radiology registered nurses (RNs) partook in a pre-intervention 10-point Likert scale survey to measure their perceptions of the current clinical teamwork skills and communication. The RNs then attended a 30-minute educational workshop, introducing the newly defined roles. Five weeks post-implementation of the defined roles the RNs completed the post-intervention survey. In order to evaluate the effect of improved nursing communication, and teamwork on DTGP, retrospective DTGP time data was extracted from the organizations internal stroke data quality improvement base prior to implementation of role delineation and 5 weeks of data post-implementation. The results showed a 20.17% change in responses to the post-intervention survey questions, indicating a positive statistically significant change (p = .002) toward teamwork and communication. The post-intervention DTGP time (M = 16.111 minutes) was 1.8998% less than the pre-intervention DTGP time (M = 16.4231 minutes). The results indicated that with a p-value of .850, there was no statistically significant difference in DTGP time after implementation of RN role delineation indicating that through defining nursing roles treatment remained timely and efficient.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a critical examination of the career trajectories of Black male educators through the discussion of key issues relevant to the professional development and advancement of this population. Design/methodology/approach The authors approach this paper through the examination of literature related to Black male educators. The authors seek to provide insight into the status of Black male educators through a critical focus of scholarship in the three critical areas of Black male educator recruitment, retention and mobility. Findings This examination supports the need to generate sustainable initiatives to diversify our nation’s classrooms and create additional opportunities for Black male representation in school leadership positions. Effectively dismantling the entrenched hurdles many encounter within their teaching careers requires a concerted commitment by advocates, policymakers and school administrators at all levels. Additionally, there is a continued need for stakeholders to keep the diversification of P-12 schools as a key priority in current education reform strategies. Social implications This paper serves as an impetus to highlight the continued need for further exploration and consequential action to increase the numbers of Black males in the teaching profession. Originality/value This paper adds to the literature surrounding Black male educators by providing a holistic view of their career trajectories of Black male educators and shedding light on the need for ongoing efforts to diversify the P-12 teaching workforce.

Most U.S. states have one or more pregnancy-specific alcohol or drug policies. However, research evidence indicates that some of these policies lead to increases in adverse birth outcomes, including low-birthweight and preterm birth. We offer explanations for why these ineffective policies related to pregnant people's use of alcohol and drugs in the U.S. exist, including: abortion politics; racism and the 'War on Drugs'; the design and application of scientific evidence; and lack of a pro-active vision. We propose alternative processes and concepts to guide strategies for developing new policy approaches that will support the health and well-being of pregnant people who use alcohol and drugs and their children. Processes include: involving people most affected by pregnancy-specific alcohol and drug policies in developing alternative policy and practice approaches as well as future research initiatives. Additionally, we propose that research funding support the development of policies and practices that bolster health and well-being rather than primarily documenting the harms of different substances. Concepts include accepting that policies adopted in response to pregnant people's use of alcohol and drugs cause harms and working to do better, as well as connecting to efforts that re-envision the child welfare system in the U.S.

The end of the last and the beginning of this century saw an increasing interest in business improvement (BI). BI tools and techniques have their roots in improving quality and the maintenance of quality systems. In response to the decline of the UK’s competitiveness in world terms the Government spearheaded the adoption of interventions including a raft of quality mechanisms. There is a considerable amount of literature describing the application of each of these models, their advantages and disadvantages. However, there is a paucity of studies that comparatively analyse BI models derived from different philosophical and practice based origins. Focuses specifically on the value‐addedness resulting from the adoption and implementation of Investors in People and the Business Excellence Model (BEM). Before addressing the models discusses the environmental factors driving their development and diffusion; describes and critiques IIP and BEM showing the complementary linkages; and discusses a longitudinal study of the implementation process in a hotel context. Concludes with recommendations for BI adopters.

In analyzing the three-dimensional structure of a protein, the x-ray crystallography endeavor can be improved by incorporating unnatural amino acids into that protein. Most naturally occurring atoms do not have sufficient mass to diffract electrons. Using unnatural amino acids containing a metalloid provides a solution to this problem. Bioincorporation of L-Telluromethionine can provide residues with sufficient mass for electron scattering when incorporated serendipitously. However telluromethionine has cytotoxic effects which reduce cell growth and uptake. A proteomic analysis of telluromethionyl Escherichia coli was carried out using the methionine auxotroph E. collie DL41(DE3) (pCock) expression system. Small businesses in desert Australia are disadvantaged by remoteness from suppliers and markets, workforce problems, and limited opportunities to explore alliances across the desert. This paper outlines an initiative to support and encourage capacity building in remote desert centres and to create networks to overcome the isolation experienced by desert-based small and medium-sized enterprises. Building on existing local initiatives and seizing the opportunities offered by a range of new information and communication technologies (ICT), businesses are linked together to explore the benefits of networking, to identify possible synergies and opportunities for collaboration, to gain practical ICT and networking skills and confidence in the processes, and create real outcomes for their business. The initiative began with a pilot project focused on training and mentoring business owners and managers in business clustering. In addition to education and training outcomes, this pilot produced more outcomes for the participating businesses than had been anticipated. In the final year $7 million of new business was reported. Many businesses embraced this way of working together to improve competitiveness; as a consequence the networks have continued to operate beyond the life of the pilot project. Several case studies are presented to demonstrate how ICT has been used for the transfer of ideas and knowledge, for collaboration, and to open new commercial opportunities for businesses that arose as a direct result of their participation. Proof of concept has been demonstrated in the value to businesses of this approach to long-distance inter-business cooperation and networking. The paper outlines key findings from the pilot project, including the needs for an appropriate pace of development, mix of technologies used, nurturing of business champions, flexibility, local facilitation, and real business outcomes, among others. These findings are being used to inform future developments in long-distance, cross-border business networking internationally and an expanded project involving nine regions of desert Australia.

A 36-year-old woman was admitted for initiation of hemodialysis for chronic renal failure. Two days after catheter placement the patient developed a fever that persisted and resulted in subsequent removal of the catheter. Although blood cultures were negative, cultures of the catheter tip were positive for Staphylococcus epidermidis. An initial vancomycin dose was well tolerated, but the patient later experienced numbness and tingling of her lower back accompanied by pain ten minutes after initiation of the second dose. Symptoms abated when the vancomycin infusion was discontinued, and the drug was subsequently well tolerated when reinstituted at a slower infusion rate. Similar symptoms were observed five minutes into a vancomycin infusion a week later that also resolved after decreasing the infusion rate. Patients on hemodialysis receiving vancomycin should be carefully monitored during drug administration for the development of paresthesia and spasmodic lower back pain.
