Purpose: The objectives were to evaluate the feasibility of early implementation of a canine-assisted intervention (CAI) for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, and to determine the changes in social functioning and in engagement experienced by the participants., Materials and Methods: A CAI consisting of 24 sessions was piloted in an intra-subject quasi-experimental longitudinal design. The outcome measures were the Assessment of Communication and Interaction Skills (ACIS) and Individual Child Engagement Record-Revised (ICER-R)., Results: No adverse events or side-effects were noted. The sample consisted of 44 participants (median age 37 months). A total of 33 children (75%) attended all sessions. Main results showed that after completing the intervention, the overall ACIS score improved significantly (p < 0.001); the effect size was large. There was a significant improvement in the scales of the ICER-R from baseline to the final assessment: overall engagement (p < 0.001), frequency of repetitive behaviours (p < 0.001), frequency of interaction between the child and adults (p < 0.001), and the quality of this interaction (p < 0.001); the effect sizes ranged from medium to large., Conclusions: The early application was feasible. The results in the areas of social functioning and engagement suggest that this CAI may be a useful complementary strategy in early therapeutic intervention with these children. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS?: The results of implementation of a canine-assisted intervention (CAI) at an early therapeutic intervention unit for children with neurodevelopmental disorders are not known. This research supported the feasibility and positive impact of a CAI in a population consisting of children with neurodevelopmental disorders in the earliest stages of their life, with similar proportions of participants with global developmental delay and autism spectrum disorder. The study was pioneering in the development of this form of actions in an early intervention service for children with these health conditions. The intervention appears feasible and the results extend the existing evidence base for this intervention modality. The findings suggest significant improvements of a medium to large size in the domains of communication skills and social relations, engagement levels, frequency and quality of interaction with adults and repetitive behaviours after 12 and 24 weekly CAI sessions., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the inequalities in Papanicolaou test (also referred to as the Pap smear) uptake according to the socio-demographic characteristics of Peruvian women 30 years to 59 years of age using information from the 2015-2017 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES, acronym in Spanish)., Methods: This is an analytical, cross-sectional study based on information acquired from the 2015-2017 ENDES surveys. Socio-demographic characteristics were reported using absolute frequencies and weighted proportions with 95% confidence intervals, considering results with a p-value <0.05 as statistically significant. Concentration curves (CCs) and concentration indices (IndCs) were created based on the interaction of the wealth index and uptake of Pap smears, taking into account the different characteristics of the population studied for the measure of inequalities., Results: All the CCs were distributed below the line of equality. Similarly, all the IndCs were higher than zero, indicating inequality in the uptake of Pap smears, favoring those with a higher wealth index. The highest IndC values were obtained from women aged 50-59 (IndC, 0.293), those who lived in the jungle (IndC, 0.230), and those without health insurance (IndC, 0.173)., Conclusions: We found socio-demographic inequalities in the uptake of Pap smears in Peru, favoring women with a higher wealth index. More funding is needed to promote cervical cancer screening programs and to create systems that ensure equal access to healthcare in Peru.

This paper proposes a methodology for dealing with an issue of crucial practical importance in real engineering systems such as fault detection and recovery of a sensor. The main goal is to define a strategy to identify a malfunctioning sensor and to establish the correct measurement value in those cases. As study case, we use the data collected from a geothermal heat exchanger installed as part of the heat pump installation in a bioclimatic house. The sensor behaviour is modeled by using six different machine learning techniques: Random decision forests, gradient boosting, extremely randomized trees, adaptive boosting, k-nearest neighbors, and shallow neural networks. The achieved results suggest that this methodology is a very satisfactory solution for this kind of systems.

The hotel industry is an important energy consumer that needs efficient energy management methods to guarantee its performance and sustainability. The new role of hotels as prosumers increases the difficulty in the design of these methods. Also, the scenery is more complex as renewable energy systems are present in the hotel energy mix. The performance of energy management systems greatly depends on the use of reliable predictions for energy load. This paper presents a new methodology to predict energy load in a hotel based on intelligent techniques. The model proposed is based on a hybrid intelligent topology implemented with a combination of clustering techniques and intelligent regression methods (Artificial Neural Network and Support Vector Regression). The model includes its own energy demand information, occupancy rate, and temperature as inputs. The validation was done using real hotel data and compared with time-series models. Forecasts obtained were satisfactory, showing a promising potential for its use in energy management systems in hotel resorts.

Purpose: To investigate the role of screening magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the detection of synchronous contralateral breast cancer in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer., Materials and Methods: Between January 1999 and July 2001, 182 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer (after either core or excisional biopsy with positive or close margins of resection) underwent bilateral contrast material-enhanced MR imaging at 1.5 T with a dedicated bilateral breast multicoil array. The contralateral breast was imaged for cancer screening. Family history of breast cancer, index cancer histology, breast density, and age at diagnosis of first breast cancer were assessed as potential risk factors for synchronous contralateral breast cancer., Results: Fifteen patients (8.2%) had a suspicious enhancing lesion depicted in the contralateral breast. Seven patients (3.8%) had malignant results: ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in four, invasive ductal carcinoma with DCIS in two, and invasive ductal carcinoma in one. Eight patients (4.4%) had benign results: fibrocystic changes in four, atypical ductal hyperplasia in two, atypical lobular hyperplasia and focal lobular carcinoma in situ in one, and ductal hyperplasia in one. Six patients with negative MR findings underwent prophylactic mastectomy; no malignancy was found. No significant differences were noted among patients with true-positive (n = 7), false-positive (n = 8), or negative (n = 167) MR findings with regard to family history of breast cancer (P <.27), index cancer histology (P <.19), breast density (P <.34), or age at diagnosis of first breast cancer (P <.10)., Conclusion: The preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of using MR imaging of the breast in a screening role, specifically to evaluate the contralateral breast in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer to detect mammographically and clinically occult synchronous breast cancer.
