11. Analysis and comparison of lighting design criteria in green building certification systems — Guidelines for application in Serbian building practice

Abstract

Green building assessment is currently being introduced into Serbian building practice. Since there is no Serbian certification system which could support building assessment, and especially lighting design evaluation, this paper analyzes and compares the lighting design criteria of three international certification systems, LEED, BREEAM and CASBEE. Specific requirements for each considered criterion, as well as the grading structure and stringency of these systems, are also analyzed. Based on the conclusions of these analyses, a new set of criteria, some of which are original, are offered in order to be incorporated into the future Serbian certification system. Taking into account that the structure of the future system is unknown, the basic applied principle was simplicity for application and, therefore, a single requirement is defined for each criterion. Finally, a hierarchy within the new set of criteria is established for both indoor and outdoor lighting. Mandatory criteria are selected first, while the remaining criteria are divided into two groups based on their relevance. Although predominantly intended for the improvement of Serbian building practice, the proposed set of assessment criteria is general and can be used throughout the world.

12. POTENTIAL FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CO2 EMISSION REDUCTION BY REFURBISHMENT OF HOUSING BUILDING STOCK BUILT BEFORE 1919 IN SERBIA.

Abstract

Single and multi-family houses built before 1919 account for 3.8% of total Serbian housing stock. However, due to their important cultural and historic values, and continuous tenant occupation, these buildings nowadays require rehabilitation both because of contemporary energy performance demands, as well as for the need of achieving a desired level of living comfort. Since these buildings are often subject to heritage protection regime, issues of their refurbishment are more complex than those of the rest of the housing building stock. Their treatment also differs from refurbishment of other historic buildings, due to the sustained residential function. The National Typology of Residential Buildings in Serbia was developed within the TABULA ("Typology Approach for Building Stock Energy Assessment") project that had common methodology for 15 European participating countries, where Serbia was the only country from the Western Balkans region. This paper presents a detail study of specifics and refurbishment potentials of the selected building period, exploring a different approach towards the topic of energy refurbishment, having in mind all the characteristics that define presented building types. Although identified through national survey, the building types analysed in this paper can be found throughout the region, within the similar context. Furthermore, in urban areas of many European cities, these century-old buildings are often subject of gentrification processes with increasing interest in their thorough rehabilitation, while in rural areas old buildings are often converted to accommodate tourists. Abstract

The article reviews research into vernacular architecture of the Balkan region. There is a large building stock with an increasing potential in the contemporary context of preserving existing resources. The topic focuses on the form of the vernacular house and on the analysis of its aesthetic characteristics. The subjects of study are single-family dwellings. The selection comprised two regional types of vernacular Balkan architecture, emerging in completely different historical contexts, natural and morphological characteristics of the terrain, and climatic conditions: the lowland house (in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina) and the highland lake house (in the Ohrid region). The first section of the research contains the analysis of the selected examples of vernacular architecture: the basic characteristics of architecture and urban design, the history of its development, the climate and the soil, etc. In addition, the studies of theoretical views in the field of aesthetics were used to define the principles upon which it was possible to examine the aesthetic characteristics of the house of vernacular architecture. The final step of the research contains the analysis of the elements of the form (surface and volumetric) for the particular examples of traditional buildings in Vojvodina and Ohrid, and the comparative analysis of their aesthetic characteristics. The research showed that the form of the building of vernacular architecture is the result of a complex evolutionary process. The aesthetic characteristics of vernacular architecture created through the evolutionary process of adaptation to the particular natural and built environmental conditions make up an intricate set of various aesthetic categories, interconnected and intertwined. These aesthetics categories are integrated in order to create the general aesthetics of the architectural object as a compositional whole, and of the whole comprising the building and its environment. The developed methodology can be applied to any structure of vernacular architecture whose aesthetic features need to be examined. Derived methodology is applicable to the investigation of aesthetic characteristics of any vernacular building.
