2. Effects of combustible cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems on immune cell‐driven inflammation: Evidences from diabetic patients and multiple low dose streptozotocin‐treated diabetic mice.

Abstract

Considering detrimental impacts of combustible cigarettes (CCs) on the exacerbation of diabetes mellitus (DM), a significant number of DM patients have substituted CCs with electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). Herewith, we compared CCs and ENDS‐dependent modulation of immune cell‐driven inflammation in DM patients who used ENDS (DMENDS), CCs (DMCC) or were non‐smokers (DMAIR), paving the way for the better understanding of ENDS‐induced biological effects. Multiple low dose streptozotocin (MLD‐STZ)‐induced mice model of DM was used to support clinical findings. Both CCs and ENDS aggravated MLD‐STZ‐induced DM. Pancreatic injury and inflammation were more severe in CC‐exposed than in ENDS‐exposed diabetic mice. CCs promoted activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, enhanced production of inflammatory cytokines in neutrophils, macrophages and remarkably improved antigen presenting capacity of dendritic cells which resulted in the expansion of TNF‐α, IFN‐γ and IL‐17‐producing Th1 and Th17 lymphocytes, NK and NKT cells. Compared to CCs, ENDS more intensively promoted expansion of FoxP3‐expressing, IL‐10‐producing NK and NKT cells and triggered less intense systemic inflammatory response in diabetic animals. Similar findings were observed in DM patients. The highest numbers of inflammatory, TNF‐α and IL‐1β‐producing neutrophils and monocytes, TNF‐α and IFN‐γ‐producing T lymphocytes, NK and NKT cells were determined in the blood of DMCC patients, while total number of immunosuppressive, TGF‐β‐producing CD3 + CD4 + T cells was the highest in the blood of DMENDS patients. In conclusion, although both CC and ENDS aggravate on‐going inflammation in DM, ENDS have weaker capacity to induce production of inflammatory cytokines in immune cells than CCs. Abstract

The efficiency of a thin layered activated charcoal material used in chemical protective overgarments has been evaluated. The study has been conducted with the aim to obtain protective materials with best characteristics considering resistance to benzene effect under dynamic conditions and to create a new filtration protection device. In order to evaluate dynamic adsorption characteristics of thin layered sorption materials, sophisticated dynamic gas chromatography method is used. The curves of benzene penetration are determined for sandwich materials, and sorption layers used in filtrating protective clothing shows that thin layered carbon sorption materials (type M00) have good protective properties as compared to other similar materials. The findings will help to create conditions for developing a functional model for producing a new protective overgarment in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The prevalence of depression among women with breast cancer (BC) is extremely variable in research studies. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of depressive disorder in women suffering from BC as well as to examine its relationship with clinical–pathological and immunophenotypic characteristics of BC. The study included 194 patients with BC who were diagnosed with the disease between 2009 and 2015 in the Clinical Center Kragujevac, Serbia. Pathohistological and immunohistochemical analyses was used on the material obtained after the surgical removal of breast tumors, determining all significant clinical and morphological parameters. The level of depression among the examinees confirmed that the differences in the level of depression between the histological grades were statistically significant. According to the univariate binary logistic regression, the depression of a patient correlates with the category of molecular tumor subtype/Luminal A (p < 0.0005), PR expression (p = 0.050) and lymphatic invasion (p = 0.025). Multivariate binary logistic regression showed that the onset of depression associated with the present molecular subtype of the tumor of a worse prognostic character (p = 0.019). Depression is a common disorder in women with breast cancer. The level of depression is correlates with some of the clinicоmorphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of BC. Abstract

This detailed review focuses on retroperitoneal undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), a particularly aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma that poses unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to its rarity and complex presentation. By documenting a new case of retroperitoneal UPS and conducting a comprehensive review of all known cases, this article aims to expand the existing body of knowledge on the epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, and treatment strategies associated with this rare disease. The complexity of diagnosing UPS is emphasized given that it rarely occurs in the retroperitoneal space and its histological and molecular complexity often complicates its recognition. This review highlights the need for specialized diagnostic approaches, including advanced imaging techniques and histopathological studies, to accurately diagnose and stage the disease. In terms of treatment, this paper advocates a multidisciplinary approach that combines surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy and tailors it to individual patients to optimize treatment outcomes. This review highlights case studies that illustrate the effectiveness of surgical intervention in the treatment of these tumors and emphasize the importance of achieving clear surgical margins to prevent recurrence. Furthermore, this review discusses the potential of new molecular targets and the need for innovative therapies that could bring new hope to patients affected by this challenging sarcoma.
