International audience; The low resolution stable isotope analysis conducted on the EPICA Dome C ice core (sampling length of 55 cm) has revealed distinct behaviours of Antarctic temperature over the past interglacials with differences in duration, intensity and trends (Jouzel et al, Science, 2007). Many questions remain however open regarding not only the mean state but also the millennial and centennial variability during warm periods. Here we present new high resolution deuterium measurements conducted on 11 cm samples and covering Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 (~400ky BP) and 5 (~125ky BP). Thanks to these new measurements (~800 samples for MIS 11 and ~2400 for MIS 5), the temporal resolution has been improved from 220y to 45y for the first one and from 50y to 20y for the second one, making therefore possible a detailed comparison with the current interglacial period, the Holocene. The new resolution for the MIS 11, used to be considered as a good analogue for the present Holocene because of a quite similar orbital configuration, brings really new rich climatic information. First, the power spectra of the two interglacial periods reveal interestingly similar submillennial periodicities. This point suggests that similar processes involved in the centennial scale variability may be operating during these two warm periods. However, both the long term trend and the time evolution of the centennial to millennial variability are quite different between the Holocene and the early MIS 11. We therefore point at strong limitations in the use of MIS 11 as a simple analogue of the present warm period and its future. Measurements are still being conducted on MIS 5 in order to characterize the variability associated with the warmest of EPICA Dome C interglacial periods, occurring with an orbital context quite different from the current interglacial. At the time of preparation of this abstract, 1200 samples have already been measured. MIS 5.5 trend and variability will then be compared to the results obtained and previously described for early MIS 11 and Holocene. Moreover our results regarding not only mean Antarctic climate but also centennial climatic variability are expected to be valuable for the comparison with simulations conducted with climate models, as the phase 3 of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project will include MIS 5.5 amongst the target modelling periods.

Abstract

The recent completion of drilling at Vostok station in East Antarctica has allowed the extension of the ice record of atmospheric composition and climate to the past four glacial-interglacial cycles. The succession of changes through each climate cycle and termination was similar, and atmospheric and climate properties oscillated between stable bounds. Interglacial periods differed in temporal evolution and duration. Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane correlate well with Antarctic air-temperature throughout the record. Present-day atmospheric burdens of these two important greenhouse gases seem to have been unprecedented during the past 420,000 years.

Abstract

Ice cores drilled at Vostok Station, Antarctica, and studied over the past 10 years by Russia, France, and the United States (Figure 1) are providing a wealth of information about past climate and environmental changes over more than a full glacial-interglacial cycle. The ice cores show that East Antarctica was colder and drier during glacial periods than during the Holocene and that large-scale atmospheric circulation was more vigorous during glacial times. They also support evidence from deep-sea sediment studies favoring orbital forcing of Pleistocene climate, reveal direct correlations of carbon dioxide and methane concentrations with temperature, and indicate how the accumulation of trace compounds have changed through time.

Abstract

This review paper is mainly concerned with a geochemical investigation of the deepest part of the Vostok ice core between 3310 m, the depth at which the palaeoenvironmental record present in the ice above is lost, and the bottom of the core about 130 m above subglacial Lake Vostok. Two sections constitute this part of the core. The upper section (3310-3539 m depth) still consists of ice of meteoric origin but subjected to widespread complex deformation. This deformation is analysed in light of a [delta]D--deuterium excess diagram and information on microparticles, crystal sizes and chemical elements distributions in that part of the core. Such ice deformation occurred when the ice was still grounded upstream from Vostok station in a region with subfreezing temperatures. The lower section from 3539 m to the bottom of the core at 3623 m depth is lake ice formed by freezing of subglacial Lake Vostok waters. This is indicated by the isotopic properties ([delta]D, [[delta].sup.18]O and deuterium excess), by electrical conductivity measurements (ECM), crystallography and gas content of the ice. These ice core data together with data on ionic chemistry favour an origin of the lake ice by frazil ice generation in a supercooled (below pressure melting point) water plume existing in the lake followed by accretion and consolidation by subsequent freezing of the host water. The helium profile of this deepest part of the Vostok core is quite unusual and surprising. It has important implications for the interactions between the ice sheet and the lake. Two constrasting scenarios can be satisfactorily constructed so that the lake residence time is not well constrained. Keywords: Vostok ice core; Helium; Deuterium

Abstract

A deuterium-excess history has been obtained from ice cores from Vostok, East Antarctica, covering the glacial-interglacial cycle of the past 150,000 years. A strong anticorrelation with the orbital obliquity of the Earth was found and values are higher during the cold stage 5d, possibly driven by relatively less moisture from high latitudes and more from low latitudes. The deuterium-excess is thus able to give long-term, spatially integrated data on ocean surface conditions.
