The proliferation of fake news in electoral processes in other countries, and during the emergency caused by the earthquakes of September 2017 in Mexico, gave rise to a collegial effort to avoid public misinformation during the 2018 presidential election. A group of journalists offered their time, their creativity and their professionalism to create an information validation system that would dilute the impact of rumors or news items produced with questionable professional rigor. The result was a success story of journalistic deontology that managed to refute over 400 fake news items and produce educational materials to foster critical media consumption. The text explains the justification, methodology and results of this initiative and presents a medium-term prognosis of efforts to foster media literacy and defend the right to information.
