1. Existence, uniqueness and positivity of solutions to the Guyon-Lekeufack path-dependent volatility model with general kernels

Abstract

We show the existence and uniqueness of a continuous solution to a path-dependent volatility model introduced by Guyon and Lekeufack (2023) to model the price of an equity index and its spot volatility. The considered model for the trend and activity features can be written as a Stochastic Volterra Equation (SVE) with non-convolutional and non-bounded kernels as well as non-Lipschitz coefficients. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the SVE under integrability and regularity assumptions on the two kernels and under a condition on the second kernel weighting the past squared returns which ensures that the activity feature is bounded from below by a positive constant. Then, assuming in addition that the kernel weighting the past returns is of exponential type and that an inequality relating the logarithmic derivatives of the two kernels with respect to their second variables is satisfied, we show the positivity of the volatility process which is obtained as a non-linear function of the SVE's solution. We show numerically that the choice of an exponential kernel for the kernel weighting the past returns has little impact on the quality of model calibration compared to other choices and the inequality involving the logarithmic derivatives is satisfied by the calibrated kernels. These results extend those of Nutz and Valdevenito (2023).

Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic created challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. To allow overwhelmed hospitals to focus on the most fragile and severely ill patients, new types of management had to be set up. During the pandemic, patients with COVID-19 from greater Paris area were monitored at home using a web-based remote system called COVIDOM™, using self-administered questionnaires, which triggered alerts to a regional control center. To ease hospital discharge and to prevent hospital from being overwhelmed, patients still requiring low-flow oxygen therapy discharged home were also included in this telemedicine solution. We aim to evaluate the safety of this original management.Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cohort of patients discharged home from hospital after COVID-19 and still requiring nasal oxygen therapy, who were monitored by questionnaire and trained physicians using COVIDOM. During late follow-up, the status of the patients using a Euro-Qol (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire, and the Medical Research Council (MRC) Dyspnea scale was collected.Results: From March 21st to June 21st 2020, 73 COVID-19 patients still receiving nasal oxygen at hospital discharge were included. Median [Inter-Quartile Range (IQR)] age was 62.0 [52.5–69.0] years, 64.4% were male. Altogether, risk factors were observed in 49/73 (67%) patients, mainly hypertension (35.6%), diabetes mellitus (15.1%) and active neoplasia (11.0%). Among the cohort, 26% of patients were previously managed in ICU. Oxygen therapy was required for a median [IQR] of 20 [16–31] days. No death or urgent unplanned hospitalization were observed during the COVIDOM telemonitoring. During the late follow-up evaluation (6 months after inclusion), the mean EQ-5D-5L questionnaire score was 7.0 ± 1.6, and the mean MRC dyspnea scale was 0.8 ± 1.0, indicating absence of dyspnea. Five patients have died from non-COVID causes.Conclusions: In this preliminary study, early discharge home of patients with severe COVID-19 disease who still required low-oxygen therapy seems to be safe.

Abstract

We are interested in the discretization of stable driven SDEs with additive noise for $\alpha$ $\in$ (1, 2) and Lq -- Lp drift under the Serrin type condition $\alpha$/q + d/p < $\alpha$ -- 1. We show weak existence and uniqueness as well as heat kernel estimates for the SDE and obtain a convergence rate of order (1/$\alpha$)*($\alpha$ -- 1 -- $\alpha$/q - d/p) for the difference of the densities for the Euler scheme approximation involving suitably cutoffed and time randomized drifts.

4. A Spatial-statistical model to analyse historical rutting data

Abstract

Pavement rutting poses a significant challenge in flexible pavements, necessitating costly asphalt resurfacing. To address this issue comprehensively, we propose an advanced Bayesian hierarchical framework of latent Gaussian models with spatial components. Our model provides a thorough diagnostic analysis, pinpointing areas exhibiting unexpectedly high rutting rates. Incorporating spatial and random components, and important explanatory variables like annual average daily traffic (traffic intensity), asphalt type, rut depth and lane width, our proposed models account for and estimate the influence of these variables on rutting. This approach not only quantifies uncertainties and discerns locations at the highest risk of requiring maintenance, but also uncover spatial dependencies in rutting (millimetre/year). We apply our models to a data set spanning eleven years (2010-2020). Our findings emphasise the systematic unexplained spatial rutting effect, where some of the rutting variability is accounted for by spatial components, asphalt type, in conjunction with traffic intensity, is also found to be the primary driver of rutting. Furthermore, the spatial dependencies uncovered reveal road sections experiencing more than 1 millimeter of rutting beyond annual expectations. This leads to a halving of the expected pavement lifespan in these areas. Abstract

We propose a new model for the coherent forecasting of both the implied volatility surfaces and the underlying asset returns.In the spirit of Guyon and Lekeufack (2023) who are interested in the dependence of volatility indices (e.g. the VIX) on the paths of the associated equity indices (e.g. the S&P 500), we first study how implied volatility can be predicted using the past trajectory of the underlying asset price. Our empirical study reveals that a large part of the movements of the at-the-money-forward implied volatility for up to two years maturities can be explained using the past returns and their squares. Moreover, we show that up to four years of the past evolution of the underlying price should be used for the prediction and that this feedback effect gets weaker when the maturity increases. Building on this new stylized fact, we fit to historical data a parsimonious version of the SSVI parameterization (Gatheral and Jacquier, 2014) of the implied volatility surface relying on only four parameters and show that the two parameters ruling the at-the-money-forward implied volatility as a function of the maturity exhibit a path-dependent behavior with respect to the underlying asset price. Finally, we propose a model for the joint dynamics of the implied volatility surface and the underlying asset price. The latter is modelled using a variant of the path-dependent volatility model of Guyon and Lekeufack and the former is obtained by adding a feedback effect of the underlying asset price onto the two parameters ruling the at-the-money-forward implied volatility in the parsimonious SSVI parameterization and by specifying a hidden semi-Markov diffusion model for the residuals of these two parameters and the two other parameters. Thanks to this model, we are able to simulate highly realistic paths of implied volatility surfaces that are arbitrage-free.

9. Convex ordering of solutions to one-dimensional SDEs

Abstract

In this paper, we are interested in the propagation of convexity by the strong solution to a one-dimensional Brownian stochastic differential equation with coefficients Lipschitz in the spatial variable uniformly in the time variable and in the convex ordering between the solutions of two such equations. We prove that while these properties hold without further assumptions for convex functions of the processes at one instant only, an assumption almost amounting to spatial convexity of the diffusion coefficient is needed for the extension to convex functions at two instants. Under this spatial convexity of the diffusion coefficients, the two properties even hold for convex functionals of the whole path. For directionally convex functionals, the spatial convexity of the diffusion coefficient is no longer needed. Our method of proof consists in first establishing the results for time discretization schemes of Euler type and then transferring them to their limiting Brownian diffusions. We thus exhibit approximations which avoid {\em convexity arbitrages} by preserving convexity propagation and comparison and can be computed by Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

Despite several decades of development, microfluidics lacks a sealing material that can be readily fabricated, leak-tight under high liquid water pressure, stable over a long time, and vacuum compatible. In this paper, we report the performances of a micro-scale processable sealing material for nanofluidic/microfluidics chip fabrication, which enables us to achieve all these requirements. We observed that micrometric walls made of SU-8 photoresist, whose thickness can be as low as 35 $\mu$m, exhibit water pressure leak-tightness from 1.5 bar up to 5.5 bar, no water porosity even after 2 months of aging, and are able to sustain under $10^{-5}$ mbar vacuum. This sealing material is therefore reliable and versatile for building microchips, part of which must be isolated from liquid water under pressure or vacuum. Moreover, the fabrication process we propose does not require the use of aggressive chemicals or high-temperature or high-energy plasma treatment. It thus opens a new perspective to seal microchips where delicate surfaces such as nanomaterials are present.

12. Centaurus A: Exploring the Nature of the Hard X-ray/Soft Gamma-ray Emission with INTEGRAL

Abstract

The question of the origin of the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray emission in Centaurus A (Cen A) persists despite decades of observations. Results from X-ray instruments suggest a jet origin since the implied electron temperature (kT_e) would cause pair production runaway in the corona. In contrast, instruments sensitive to soft gamma-rays report electron temperatures indicating a corona origin may be possible. In this context, we analyzed archival INTEGRAL/IBIS-ISGRI and SPI data and observations from a 2022 Cen A monitoring program. Our analysis did not find any spectral variability. Thus we combined all observations for long-term average spectra, which were fit with a NuSTAR observation to study the 3.5 keV - 2.2 MeV spectrum. Spectral fits using a CompTT model found kT_e ~ 550 keV, near pair-production runaway. The spectrum was also well described by a log-parabola to model synchrotron self-Compton emission from the jet. Additionally, a spectral fit with the 12-year catalog Fermi/LAT spectrum using a log-parabola can explain the data up to ~ 3 GeV. Above ~ 3 GeV, a power-law excess is present, which has been previously reported in LAT/H.E.S.S. analysis. However, including a corona spectral component can also describe the data well. 14. Central limit theorem for the stratified resampling mechanism

Abstract

The stratified resampling mechanism is one of the resampling schemes commonly used in the resampling steps of particle filters. In the present paper, we prove a central limit theorem for this mechanism under the assumption that the initial positions are independent and identically distributed and the weights proportional to a positive function of the positions such that the image of their common distribution by this function has a non zero component absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This result relies on the convergence in distribution of the fractional part of partial sums of the normalized weights to some random variable uniformly distributed on $[0,1]$, which is established in the companion paper \cite{CLTfract} by overcoming the difficulty raised by the coupling through the normalization. Under the conjecture that a similar convergence in distribution remains valid at the next steps of a particle filter which alternates selections according to the stratified resampling mechanism and mutations according to Markov kernels, we provide an inductive formula for the asymptotic variance of the resampled population after $n$ steps. We perform numerical experiments which support the validity of this formula.

15. Convergence to the uniform distribution of vectors of partial sums modulo one with a common factor

Abstract

In this work, we prove the joint convergence in distribution of $q$ variables modulo one obtained as partial sums of a sequence of i.i.d. square integrable random variables multiplied by a common factor given by some function of an empirical mean of the same sequence. The limit is uniformy distributed over $[0,1]^q$. To deal with the coupling introduced by the common factor, we assume that the joint distribution of the random variables has a non zero component absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure, so that the convergence in the central limit theorem for this sequence holds in total variation distance. While our result provides a generalization of Benford's law to a data adapted mantissa, our main motivation is the derivation of a central limit theorem for the stratified resampling mechanism, which is performed in the companion paper \cite{echant}.

Abstract

In recent experiments, unprecedentedly large values for the conductivity of electrolytes through carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been measured, possibly owing to flow slip and a high pore surface charge density whose origin is still unknown. By accounting for the coupling between the {quantum} CNT and the {classical} electrolyte-filled pore capacitances, we study the case where a gate voltage is applied to the CNT. The computed surface charge and conductivity dependence on reservoir salt concentration and gate voltage are intimately connected to the CNT electronic density of states. This approach provides key insight into why metallic CNTs have larger conductivities than semi-conducting ones.

Abstract

Abstract The construction of sub‐daily pressure series is described for the cities of London (GB) and Paris (FR). The series extend back 1692 and 1748, respectively, and as such they represent two of the longest sub‐daily series of barometric pressure available. These series are updated from the previously documented London and Paris daily series and offer more homogeneous series, and in the case of the London series a more temporally complete sequence of data. A pairwise homogenization procedure has been applied to the two series alongside the long series of pressure that exists for De Bilt (NL). The De Bilt series has been available for some time in the International Surface Pressure Dataset (ISPD), but further quality control and homogeneity‐checking procedures have been applied to the data in this paper and therefore the three series are released together in this dataset. The series are of immediate interest for understanding changes to storm activity across the English Channel and North Atlantic region over an extended timeframe but may also be assimilated into reanalysis datasets such as the 20th‐century reanalysis.

18. Non-decreasing martingale couplings

Abstract

For many examples of couples $(\mu,\nu)$ of probability measures on the real line in the convex order, we observe numerically that the Hobson and Neuberger martingale coupling, which maximizes for $\rho=1$ the integral of $|y-x|^\rho$ with respect to any martingale coupling between $\mu$ and $\nu$, is still a maximizer for $\rho\in(0,2)$ and a minimizer for $\rho>2$. We investigate the theoretical validity of this numerical observation and give rather restrictive sufficient conditions for the property to hold. We also exhibit couples $(\mu,\nu)$ such that it does not hold. The support of the Hobson and Neuberger coupling is known to satisfy some monotonicity property which we call non-decreasing. We check that the non-decreasing property is preserved for maximizers when $\rho\in(0,1]$. In general, there exist distinct non-decreasing martingale couplings, and we find some decomposition of $\nu$ which is in one-to-one correspondence with martingale couplings non-decreasing in a generalized sense., Comment: 41 pages, 1 figure

19. An extension of martingale transport and stability in robust finance

Abstract

While many questions in robust finance can be posed in the martingale optimal transport framework or its weak extension, others like the subreplication price of VIX futures, the robust pricing of American options or the construction of shadow couplings necessitate additional information to be incorporated into the optimization problem beyond that of the underlying asset. In the present paper, we take into account this extra information by introducing an additional parameter to the weak martingale optimal transport problem. We prove the stability of the resulting problem with respect to the risk neutral marginal distributions of the underlying asset, thus extending the results in \cite{BeJoMaPa21b}. A key step is the generalization of the main result in \cite{BJMP22} to include the extra parameter into the setting. This result establishes that any martingale coupling can be approximated by a sequence of martingale couplings with specified marginals, provided that the marginals of this sequence converge to those of the original coupling. Finally, we deduce stability of the three previously mentioned motivating examples.

Abstract

Aging, often considered a result of random cellular damage, can be accurately estimated using DNA methylation profiles, the foundation of pan-tissue epigenetic clocks. Here, we demonstrate the development of universal pan-mammalian clocks, using 11,754 methylation arrays from our Mammalian Methylation Consortium, which encompass 59 tissue types across 185 mammalian species. These predictive models estimate mammalian tissue age with high accuracy (r > 0.96). Age deviations correlate with human mortality risk, mouse somatotropic axis mutations and caloric restriction. We identified specific cytosines with methylation levels that change with age across numerous species. These sites, highly enriched in polycomb repressive complex 2-binding locations, are near genes implicated in mammalian development, cancer, obesity and longevity. Our findings offer new evidence suggesting that aging is evolutionarily conserved and intertwined with developmental processes across all mammals.

Abstract

Using DNA methylation profiles (n = 15,456) from 348 mammalian species, we constructed phyloepigenetic trees that bear marked similarities to traditional phylogenetic ones. Using unsupervised clustering across all samples, we identified 55 distinct cytosine modules, of which 30 are related to traits such as maximum life span, adult weight, age, sex, and human mortality risk. Maximum life span is associated with methylation levels in HOXL subclass homeobox genes and developmental processes and is potentially regulated by pluripotency transcription factors. The methylation state of some modules responds to perturbations such as caloric restriction, ablation of growth hormone receptors, consumption of high-fat diets, and expression of Yamanaka factors. This study reveals an intertwined evolution of the genome and epigenome that mediates the biological characteristics and traits of different mammalian species.

Abstract

Recent direct measurements of the growth kinetics of individual carbon nanotubes revealed abrupt changes in the growth rate of nanotubes maintaining the same crystal structure. These stochastic switches call into question the possibility of chirality selection based on growth kinetics. Here, we show that a similar average ratio between fast and slow rates of around 1.7 is observed largely independent of the catalyst and growth conditions. A simple model, supported by computer simulations, shows that these switches are caused by tilts of the growing nanotube edge between two main orientations, close-armchair or close-zigzag, inducing different growth mechanisms. The rate ratio of around 1.7 then simply results from an averaging of the number of growth sites and edge configurations in each orientation. Beyond providing new insights on nanotube growth based on classical crystal growth theory, these results point to ways to control the dynamics of nanotube edges, a key requirement for stabilizing growth kinetics and producing arrays of long structurally-selected nanotubes.

28. MAXI J1535-571 2017 outburst Seen by INTEGRAL/SPI and Investigating the Origin of Its Hard Tail

Abstract

On 2 September 2017 MAXI J1535-571 went into outburst and peaked at ~5 Crab in the 2-20 keV energy range. Early in the flare INTEGRAL performed Target of Opportunity pointings and monitored the source as it transitioned from the hard state to the soft state. Using quasi-simultaneous observations from MAXI/GSC and INTEGRAL/SPI, we studied the temporal and spectral evolution of MAXI J1535-571 in the 2-500 keV range. Early spectra show a Comptonized spectrum and a high-energy component dominant above ~150 keV. CompTT fits to the SPI data found electron temperatures (kTe) evolves from ~31 keV to 18 keV with a tied optical depth (tau ~ 0.85) or tau evolving from ~1.2-0.65 with a tied kTe (~24 keV). To investigate the nature of the high-energy component, we performed a spectral decomposition of the 100-400 keV energy band. The CompTT flux varies significantly during the hard state while the high-energy component flux is consistent with a constant flux. This result suggests that the two components originate from different locations, which favors a jet origin interpretation for the high-energy component over a hybrid corona interpretation. Lastly, two short rebrightenings during the hard-to-soft transition are compared to similar events reported in MAXI J1820+070.

Abstract

Abstract Background Nine male and eight female calves born to a Normande artificial insemination bull named “Ly” were referred to the French National Observatory of Bovine Abnormalities for multiple fractures, shortened gestation, and stillbirth or perinatal mortality. Results Using Illumina BovineSNP50 array genotypes from affected calves and 84 half-sib controls, the associated locus was mapped to a 6.5-Mb interval on chromosome 19, assuming autosomal inheritance with germline mosaicism. Subsequent comparison of the whole-genome sequences of one case and 5116 control genomes, followed by genotyping in the affected pedigree, identified a de novo missense substitution within the NC1 domain of the COL1A1 gene (Chr19 g.36,473,965G > A; p.D1412N) as unique candidate variant. Interestingly, the affected residue was completely conserved among 243 vertebrate orthologs, and the same substitution in humans has been reported to cause type II osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a connective tissue disorder that is characterized primarily by bone deformity and fragility. Moreover, three COL1A1 mutations have been described to cause the same syndrome in cattle. Necropsy, computed tomography, radiology, and histology confirmed the diagnosis of type II OI, further supporting the causality of this variant. In addition, a detailed analysis of gestation length and perinatal mortality in 1387 offspring of Ly and more than 160,000 progeny of 63 control bulls allowed us to statistically confirm in a large pedigree the association between type II OI and preterm delivery, which is probably due to premature rupture of fetal membranes and has been reported in several isolated cases of type II OI in humans and cattle. Finally, analysis of perinatal mortality rates and segregation distortion supported a low level of germ cell mosaicism in Ly, with an estimate of 4.5% to 7.7% of mutant sperm and thus 63 to 107 affected calves born. These numbers contrast with the 17 cases reported and raise concerns about the underreporting of congenital defects to heredo-surveillance platforms, even for textbook genetic syndromes. Conclusions In conclusion, we describe a large animal model for a recurrent substitution in COL1A1 that is responsible for type II OI in humans. More generally, this study highlights the utility of such datasets and large half-sib families available in livestock species to characterize sporadic genetic defects.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization supports interprofessional collaboration in primary care. On over the past 20 years, community pharmacists had been taking a growing number of new responsibilities and they are recognized as a core member of collaborative care teams as patient-centered care providers. This systematic review aimed to describe interprofessional collaboration in primary care involving a pharmacist, and its effect on patient related outcomes. Methods A systematic review of randomized controlled trials cited in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycInfo and CINAHL in English and French was conducted from inception to November 2022. Studies were included if they described an intervention piloted by a primary care provider and included a pharmacist and if they evaluated the effects of intervention on a disease or on patient related outcomes. The search generated 3494 articles. After duplicates were removed and titles and abstracts screened for inclusion, 344 articles remained. Results Overall, 19 studies were included in the review and assessed for quality. We found 14 studies describing an exclusive collaboration between physician and pharmacist with for all studies a three-step model of pharmacist intervention: a medication review, an interview with the patient, and recommendations made to physician. Major topics in the articles eligible for inclusion included cardiovascular diseases with blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and risk of cardiovascular diseases. Positive effects concerned principally blood pressure. Conclusions Collaboration involving pharmacists is mainly described in relation to cardiovascular diseases, for which patient-centered indicators are most often positive. It underscores the need for further controlled studies on pharmacist-involved interprofessional collaboration across various medical conditions to improve consensus on core outcomes measures.

32. Convex ordering for stochastic Volterra equations and their Euler schemes

Abstract

In this paper, we are interested in comparing solutions to stochastic Volterra equations for the convex order on the space of continuous $\R^d$-valued paths and for the monotonic convex order when $d=1$. Even if in general these solutions are neither semi-martingales nor Markov processes, we are able to exhibit conditions on their coefficients enabling the comparison. Our approach consists in first comparing their Euler schemes and then taking the limit as the time step vanishes. We consider two types of Euler schemes depending on the way the Volterra kernels are discretized. The conditions ensuring the comparison are slightly weaker for the first scheme than for the second one and this is the other way round for convergence. Moreover, we extend the integrability needed on the starting values in the existence and convergence results in the literature to be able to only assume finite first order moments, which is the natural framework for convex ordering.

Abstract

FREEFORM-ADCP is a MATLAB-based toolbox developed to support the design and operation of mono-static ultrasonic velocity profiling systems of arbitrary geometry. The toolbox enables: (1) Acoustic beam orientation definition and internal transducer parameter tuning as function of a target focal point, (2) Acoustic beam and bin mapping, and (3) Transformation of multi-beam velocities to 3D velocity. This toolbox applies to mono-static ultrasonic profiling systems (which measure velocity via the acoustic Doppler technique) of arbitrary geometry, with parameters such as the number of transducers, transducer location, orientation, and geometrically convergent or divergent configuration. Thanks to its universality, this toolbox applies to the use of standard diverging-beam Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (D-ADCPs), stand-alone or distributed, along with novel systems including converging-beam ADCPs (C-ADCPs), fixed or actuated. This toolbox has been used to advance the design and operation of novel sensor techniques for flow characterisation, and is intended to support further development.

34. Evaluation of a New Telemedicine System for Early Detection of Cardiac Instability in Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: Real-Life Out-of-Hospital Study

BackgroundFor a decade, despite results from many studies, telemedicine systems have suffered from a lack of recommendations for chronic heart failure (CHF) care because of variable study results. Another limitation is the hospital-based architecture of most telemedicine systems. Some systems use an algorithm based on daily weight, transcutaneous oxygen measurement, and heart rate to detect and treat acute heart failure (AHF) in patients with CHF as early on as possible. ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of a telemonitoring system in detecting clinical destabilization in real-life settings (out-of-hospital management) without generating too many false positive alerts. MethodsAll patients self-monitoring at home using the system after a congestive AHF event treated at a cardiology clinic in France between March 2020 and March 2021 with at least 75% compliance on daily measurements were included retrospectively. New-onset AHF was defined by the presence of at least 1 of the following criteria: transcutaneous oxygen saturation loss, defined as a transcutaneous oxygen measurement under 90%; rise of cardiac frequency above 110 beats per minute; weight gain of at least 2 kg; and symptoms of congestive AHF, described over the phone. An AHF alert was generated when the criteria reached our definition of new-onset acute congestive heart failure (HF). ResultsA total of 111 consecutive patients (n=70 men) with a median age of 76.60 (IQR 69.5-83.4) years receiving the telemonitoring system were included. Thirty-nine patients (35.1%) reached the HF warning level, and 28 patients (25%) had confirmed HF destabilization during follow-up. No patient had AHF without being detected by the telemonitoring system. Among incorrect AHF alerts (n=11), 5 patients (45%) had taken inaccurate measurements, 3 patients (27%) had supraventricular arrhythmia, 1 patient (9%) had a pulmonary bacterial infection, and 1 patient (9%) contracted COVID-19. A weight gain of at least 2 kg within 4 days was significantly associated with a correct AHF alert (P=.004), and a heart rate of more than 110 beats per minute was more significantly associated with an incorrect AHF alert (P=.007). ConclusionsThis single-center study highlighted the efficacy of the telemedicine system in detecting and quickly treating cardiac instability complicating the course of CHF by detecting new-onset AHF as well as supraventricular arrhythmia, thus helping cardiologists provide better follow-up to ambulatory patients.

Abstract

New Target-Ion Source Systems combining a target and a catcher material are developed in the radioactive beam community, in particular at GANIL, in order to maximise the yield of very short lived atoms by minimizing the atom-to-ion transformation time. The aim of this study is to characterize the release properties of 81Rb collected on two graphite catchers and two carbon nanotube catchers. The release fractions were measured at various catcher-heating temperatures and then compared to the analytical expressions relevant to each catcher. This comparison led to the extraction of the pre-exponential factor (D0) and the activation energy (Eact) involved in the diffusion coefficient of Rb for three carbon microstructures. All these data allowed to define an ideal catcher which could be made of aligned carbon nanotubes of small diameter and oriented in order to collect all the 81Rb atoms produced by the target but also to release them efficiently.

Abstract

Wasserstein projections in the convex order were first considered in the framework of weak optimal transport, and found application in various problems such as concentration inequalities and martingale optimal transport. In dimension one, it is well-known that the set of probability measures with a given mean is a lattice w.r.t. the convex order. Our main result is that, contrary to the minimum and maximum in the convex order, the Wasserstein projections are Lipschitz continuity w.r.t. the Wasserstein distance in dimension one. Moreover, we provide examples that show sharpness of the obtained bounds for the 1-Wasserstein distance.

Abstract

Motivated by insurance applications, we propose a new approach for the validation of real-world economic scenarios. This approach is based on the statistical test developed by Chevyrev and Oberhauser (2022) and relies on the notions of signature and maximum mean distance. This test allows to check whether two samples of stochastic processes paths come from the same distribution. Our contribution is to apply this test to a variety of stochastic processes exhibiting different pathwise properties (H{\"o}lder regularity, autocorrelation, regime switches) and which are relevant for the modelling of stock prices and stock volatility as well as of inflation in view of actuarial applications.

Abstract

We present measurements of the polarization of X-rays in the $2-8 \thinspace \mathrm{keV}$ band from the nucleus of the radio galaxy Centaurus A (Cen A), using a 100ks observation from the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Nearly simultaneous observations of Cen A were also taken with the Swift, NuSTAR, and INTEGRAL observatories. No statistically significant degree of polarization is detected with IXPE. These observations have a minimum detectable polarization at $99 \%$ percent confidence (MDP$_{99}$) of $6.5 \%$ using a weighted, spectral model-independent calculation in the $2-8 \thinspace \mathrm{keV}$ band. The polarization angle $\psi$ is consequently unconstrained. Spectral fitting across three orders of magnitude in X-ray energy ($0.3-400 \thinspace \mathrm{keV}$) demonstrates that the SED of Cen A is well described by a simple power law with moderate intrinsic absorption ($N_H \sim 10^{23} \thinspace \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$) and a Fe K$\alpha$ emission line, although a second unabsorbed power law is required to account for the observed spectrum at energies below $2 \thinspace \mathrm{keV}$. This spectrum suggests that the reprocessing material responsible for this emission line is optically thin and distant from the central black hole. Our upper limits on the X-ray polarization are consistent with the predictions of Compton scattering, although the specific seed photon population responsible for production of the X-rays cannot be identified. The low polarization degree, variability in the core emission, and the relative lack of variability in the Fe K$\alpha$ emission line support a picture where electrons are accelerated in a region of highly disordered magnetic fields surrounding the innermost jet., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ, 15 pages

Abstract Background Myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are common cardiovascular renal diseases (CVRD) manifestations for type 2 diabetes. The objective was to estimate the incidence of the first occurring CVRD manifestation and cumulative hospitalization costs of each CVRD manifestation for type 2 diabetes without CVRD history. Methods A cohort study of all type 2 diabetes free of CVRD as of January 1st 2014, was identified and followed-up for 5 years within the French SNDS nationwide claims database. The cumulative incidence of the first occurring CVRD manifestation was estimated using the cumulative incidence function, with death as a competing risk. Cumulative hospitalization costs of each CVRD manifestations were estimated from the perspective of all payers. Results From 2,079,089 type 2 diabetes without cancer or transplantation, 76.5% were free of CVRD at baseline with a mean age of 65 years, 52% of women and 7% with microvascular complications history. The cumulative incidence of a first CVRD manifestation was 15.3% after 5 years of follow-up with a constant linear increase over time for all CVRD manifestations: The most frequent was CKD representing 40.6% of first occurred CVRD manifestation, followed by HF (23.0%), then PAD (13.5%), stroke (13.2%) and MI (9.7%). HF and CKD together reached about one patient out of ten after 5 years and represented 63.6% of first CVRD manifestations. The 5-year global cost of all CVRD hospitalizations was 3.9 billion euros (B€), i.e. 2,450€ per patient of the whole cohort, with an exponential increase over time for each specific CVRD manifestation. The costliest was CKD (2.0 B€), followed by HF (1.2 B€), then PAD (0.7 B€), stroke (0.6 B€) and MI (0.3 B€). Conclusions/interpretation While MI, stroke and PAD remain classic major risks of complications for CVRD-free type 2 diabetes, HF and CKD nowadays represent individually a higher risk and cost than each of these classic manifestations, and jointly represents a risk and a cost twice as high as these three classic manifestations all together. This should encourage the development of specific HF and CKD preventive strategies.

Abstract

The central limit theorem is, with the strong law of large numbers, one of the two fundamental limit theorems in probability theory. Benjamin Jourdain and Alvin Tse have extended to non-linear functionals of the empirical measure of independent and identically distributed random vectors the central limit theorem which is well known for linear functionals. The main tool permitting this extension is the linear functional derivative, one of the notions of derivation on the Wasserstein space of probability measures that have recently been developed. The purpose of this work is to generalize what has been done by Jourdain and Tse: provide a Central Limit Theorem for non-linear functionals of independent and non equidistributed random vectors such as the successive values of an ergodic Markov chain.

Abstract

AbstractMaize is the cheapest grain in Ethiopia, which is widely consumed by rural communities and low-income urban residents. As a result, the Ethiopian government has implemented various policy initiatives to increase its productivity. However, these policy initiatives have not contributed enough to improve maize productivity. This study utilized stochastic frontier analysis to investigate and analyze factors contributing to differences in productivity and efficiency among smallholder maize farmers in Ethiopia. The findings showed that the supply of inputs and technology significantly affected maize productivity. We found that women-managed households were more efficient than their male-managed counterparts. We also offered new insights into the non-linear effect of farmers’ education on their efficiency levels. Furthermore, we documented that households would benefit from a 14.40% productivity gain and 13.90% production cost savings if operating at full efficiency level. Land fragmentation and distance from the main market are key factors that have adversely affected the efficiency of smallholder maize farmers. Hence, policies that reduce land fragmentation and enhance rural market infrastructure development will enable Maize farmers to increase their efficiency and productivity.

45. Developmental Markers of Pre-Schoolers' Temporal and Causal Connectivity in Two Discourse Contexts: Data from the French Language

Abstract

The goal of this study is to investigate the acquisition of causal relations with parce que "because" and temporal relations with quand "when" by children between age 3 and 5. We aim at identifying whether different discourse type, conversation and narration, allow children to use quand and parce que with different semantic functions and in different syntactic contexts. For this purpose, we conducted a corpus study on 90 children from the corpus TCOF. We extracted 330 utterances with parce que and 116 with quand produced by children. To compare whether the different syntactic and semantic properties of these utterances were due to a difference in their input, we also analyzed the utterances with quand and parce que produced by the adults. The semantic values were coded following the frameworks of Debaisieux (Revue Sémant Pragmatique 15:51-67, 2004; in: Debaisieux (ed) Analyses linguistiques sur corpus: subordination et insubordination en français, editions Lavoisier, Paris, 2013) and Benzitoun (in: Debaisieux (ed) Analyses linguistiques sur corpus: subordination et insubordination en français, editions Lavoisier, Paris, 2013). We found that (1) children produce quand and parce que in different syntactic contexts and different semantic values depending on the discourse type, (2) there is a correlation between the properties of the child and adult utterances in both contexts and (3) children's repetitions play an important role in the development of quand and parce que, and (4) the number of identical repetitions is higher at age 5 in narrations than in younger age groups. We explain this result by narrative input being too complex for younger children to be able to actively use it for their own speech production. Narrative input is therefore more helpful for the language development of older children.

Abstract

BackgroundThe direct acting antiviral remdesivir (RDV) has shown promising results in randomized clinical trials. This study is a unique report of real clinical practice RDV administration for COVID-19 from alpha through delta variant circulation in New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA). Patients in NOLA have among US worst pre-COVID health outcomes, and the region was an early epicenter for severe COVID.MethodsData were directly extracted from electronic medical records through REACHnet. Of 9,106 adults with COVID, 1,928 were admitted to inpatient care within 7 days of diagnosis. The propensity score is based upon 22 selected covariates, related to both RDV assignment and outcome of interest. RDV and non-RDV patients were matched 1:1 with replacement, by location and calendar period of admission. Primary and secondary endpoints were, death from any cause and inpatient discharge, within 28 and 14 days after inpatient admission.ResultsOf 448 patients treated with RDV, 419 (94%) were successfully matched to a non-RDV patient. 145 (35%) patients received RDV for < 5 days, 235 (56%) for 5 days, and 39 (9%) for > 5 days. 96% of those on RDV received it within 2 days of admission. RDV was more frequently prescribed in patients with pneumonia (standardized difference: 0.75), respiratory failure, hypoxemia, or dependence on supplemental oxygen (0.69), and obesity (0.35) within 5 days prior to RDV initiation or corresponding day in non-RDV patients (index day). RDV patients were numerically more likely to be on steroids within 5 days prior to index day (86 vs. 82%) and within 7 days after inpatient admission (96 vs. 87%). RDV was significantly associated with lower risk of death within 14 days after admission (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.19 to 0.69, p = 0.002) but not within 28 days (HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.36 to 1.07, p = 0.08). Discharge within 14 days of admission was significantly more likely for RDV patients (p < 0.001) and numerically more likely within 28 days after admission (p = 0.06).ConclusionOverall, our findings support recommendation of RDV administration for COVID-19 in a highly comorbid, highly impoverished population representative of both Black and White subjects in the US Gulf South.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Abstract

Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs), similar to their ionic liquid (IL) analogues, present a nanostructure arising from local interactions. The influence of this nanostructure on the macromolecular conformation of polymer chains is investigated for the first time by means of an extensive use of small angle neutron scattering on a series of poly(1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium)s with varying alkyl side-chain length and counter-anion both in bulk and in dilute solutions. Radii of gyration are found to increase with the side-chain length in solution as a consequence of crowding interactions between neighboring monomers. In bulk, however, a non monotonic evolution of the radius of gyration reflects a change in chain flexibility and a potential screening of electrostatic interactions. Additionally at smaller scale, SANS provides an experimental estimation of both the chain diameter and the correlation length between neighboring chains, comparison of which unveils clear evidence of interdigitation of the alkyl side-chains.
