Abstract

Hydatid disease is a considerable health problem Worldwide. Primary hydatid disease of the pancreas is very rare. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and an epigastric mass. A diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the pancreas was established by ultrasonography before surgery. The treatment consisted of a distal pancreatectomy. The postoperative evolution was uneventful. Hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all cystic masses in the pancreas, especially in the geographical regions where the disease is endemic. Surgical removal remains the main form of definitive treatment.

Abstract

The mechanisms of oxidation of small oligothiophenes and oligopyrroles are investigated using pulse radiolysis in aqueous solutions bearing hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin. The corresponding radical cations are produced from oxidation by the N(sub 3)(super *), Cl(sub 2)(super *-) or Br(sub 2)(super *-) radicals and are found to be similar to those observed in organic solvent. In addition, the homogeneous oxidation takes place following dissociation of the complex but also with the complex itself. Dissociation kinetics rate constants are fast for both the neutral and cation radical.

The oxidation products in acetonitrile of hexapyrrolylbenzene (HPyB) and hexakis (3-octylpyrrolyl) benzene (HOPyB), two star-shaped compounds consisting of 6-fold N-pyrrolyl-substituted benzenes are characterized by MALDI-TOF. These products result from intramolecular coupling of pyrrolyl residues without dimer or polymer products.

Abstract

Introduction Surgery remains the basic treatment of hepatic hydatid cyst (HHC). However, it is associated with significant morbidity. The aim of our study was to evaluate mortality and morbidity of surgery of the HHC and to highlight the risk factors. Methods A retrospective study was conducted from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 2006. 391 patients hospitalized for HHC and operated in the Department of General Surgery “A” of the Rabta Hospital in Tunis, Tunisia. Results The overall mortality rate was 0.7% while the overall morbidity rate was 20.4%. About 16.6% suffered from specific complications, while 3.8% suffered from non-specific complications. Predictors of morbidity in a univariate analysis included cysts larger than 9 cm, dome cysts, cysts with bilious contents, type II, III, IV or V on ultrasound classification, fissured cysts and intrabiliary rupture of hepatic hydatid cyst. The multivariate study consisted of independent predictors of disease at the site of the liver dome, the cysto-biliary fistula and intrabiliary rupture of hepatic hydatid cyst Conclusion The hepatic hydatid cyst of the dome and the existence of preoperative complications in particular intrabiliary rupture of hepatic hydatid cyst are the main factors of morbidity. A better understanding of these factors allows the surgeon to choose the appropiate surgical technique that is associated with less morbidity.Pan African Medical Journal 2012; 13:29

43. Case report: Acute peritonitis from non-traumatic rupture of the bladder

Abstract

Spontaneous bladder rupture (SBR) is rare. This entity occurs outside of any traumatic context. A 70 years-old man was admitted for acute peritonitis, acute urinary retention and hematuria. Laparotomy and exploration showed acute generalized peritonitis related to a centimeter hole in the bladder dome. Peritoneal lavage was done with biopsy of the perforation edges, a cystostomy and suturing of the bladder. The immediate postoperative course was uneventful. The etiological investigation revealed a locally advanced and metastatic prostate cancer. The evolution was rapidly fatal and the patient’s death occurred two months later due to metastatic disease. The causes, diagnosis and treatment of SBR are reviewed by the authors.

Abstract

In this study an easy strategy for conducting polymer based nanocomposite formation is presented through the deposition of cobalt-ferrite (CoFe 2O4) containing poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin layers. The electrochemical polymerization has been performed galvanostatically in an aqueous micellar medium in the presence of the nanoparticlesand the surface active Triton X-100. The nanoparticles have been characterized by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the thin layers has been studied by applying Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the basic electrochemical properties have been also determined. Moreover, electrocatalytic activity of the composite was demonstrated in the electrooxidation reaction of dopamine (DA). The enhanced sensitivity - related to the cobalt-ferritecontent - and the experienced photocatalyitic activity are promising for future application., QC 20171211
