Abstract

Quantifying the strength and efficiency of the Southern Ocean biological carbon pump (BCP) and its response to predicted changes in the Earth's climate is fundamental to our ability to predict long-term changes in the global carbon cycle and, by extension, the impact of continued anthropogenic perturbation of atmospheric CO2. There is little agreement, however, in climate model projections of the sensitivity of the Southern Ocean BCP to climate change, with a lack of consensus in even the direction of predicted change, highlighting a gap in our understanding of a major planetary carbon flux. In this review, we summarize relevant research that highlights the important role of fine-scale dynamics (both temporal and spatial) that link physical forcing mechanisms to biogeochemical responses that impact the characteristics of the seasonal cycle of phytoplankton and by extension the BCP. This approach highlights the potential for integrating autonomous and remote sensing observations of fine scale dynamics to derive regionally optimized biogeochemical parameterizations for Southern Ocean models. Ongoing development in both the observational and modelling fields will generate new insights into Southern Ocean ecosystem function for improved predictions of the sensitivity of the Southern Ocean BCP to climate change. 16. Variability of Sea-Air Carbon Dioxide Flux in Autumn Across the Weddell Gyre and Offshore Dronning Maud Land in the Southern Ocean

Abstract

Sea surface fugacity of carbon dioxide (fCO2ssw) was measured across the Weddell gyre and the eastern sector in the Atlantic Southern Ocean in autumn. During the occupation between February and April 2019, the region of the study transect was a potential ocean CO2 sink. A net CO2 flux (FCO2) of −6.2 (± 8; sink) mmol m–2 d–1 was estimated for the entire study region, with the largest average CO2 sink of −10.0 (± 8) mmol m–2 d–1 in the partly ice-covered Astrid Ridge (AR) region near the coast at 68°S and −6.1 (± 8) mmol m–2d–1 was observed in the Maud Rise (MR) region. A CO2 sink was also observed south of 66°S in the Weddell Sea (WS). To assess the main drivers describing the variability of fCO2ssw, a correlation model using fCO2 and oxygen saturation was considered. Spatial distributions of the fCO2 saturation/O2 saturation correlations, described relative to the surface water properties of the controlling variables (chlorophyll a, apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), sea surface temperature, and sea surface salinity) further constrained the interplay of the processes driving the fCO2ssw distributions. Photosynthetic CO2 drawdown significantly offsets the influence of the upwelling of CO2-rich waters in the central Weddell gyre and enhanced the CO2 sink in the region. FCO2 of −6.9 mmol m–2 d–1 estimated for the Weddell gyre in this study was different from FCO2 of −2.5 mmol m–2 d–1 in autumn estimated in a previous study. Due to low CO2 data coverage during autumn, limited sea-air CO2 flux estimates from direct sea-surface CO2 observations particularly for the Weddell gyre region are available with which to compare the values estimated in this study. This highlights the importance of increasing seasonal CO2 observations especially during autumn/winter to improving the seasonal coverage of flux estimates in the seasonal sea ice-covered regions of the Southern Ocean.

Abstract

The “OASIS for a Predicted Ocean” satellite event to the UN Decade Predicted Ocean Laboratory took place twice to account for different time zones, on Sep 16, 2021 at 1600 CET and on Sep 17, 2021 at 0100 CET. The fun event used the interactive gather.town platform (Figures 1-2), and had poster viewing (Figure 3) and socializing before and after the events. Overall, the event was fun and went smoothly due to the careful planning by the organizers, the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (COL) support team, and the gather.town architect, Sheri Schwartz. Roughly half of the team of organizers, moderators, keynote and invited speakers, and note takers were Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP), representing the stake they have in the future.

Abstract

In order to assess the evolution of aerosol parameters affecting climate change, a long-term trend analysis of aerosol optical properties was performed on time series from 52 stations situated across five continents. The time series of measured scattering, backscattering and absorption coefficients as well as the derived single scattering albedo, backscattering fraction, scattering and absorption Angstrom exponents covered at least 10 years and up to 40 years for some stations. The non-parametric seasonal Mann-Kendall (MK) statistical test associated with several pre-whitening methods and with Sen's slope was used as the main trend analysis method. Comparisons with general least mean square associated with autoregressive bootstrap (GLS/ARB) and with standard least mean square analysis (LMS) enabled confirmation of the detected MK statistically significant trends and the assessment of advantages and limitations of each method. Currently, scattering and backscattering coefficient trends are mostly decreasing in Europe and North America and are not statistically significant in Asia, while polar stations exhibit a mix of increasing and decreasing trends. A few increasing trends are also found at some stations in North America and Australia. Absorption coefficient time series also exhibit primarily decreasing trends. For single scattering albedo, 52 % of the sites exhibit statistically significant positive trends, mostly in Asia, eastern/northern Europe and the Arctic, 22 % of sites exhibit statistically significant negative trends, mostly in central Europe and central North America, while the remaining 26 % of sites have trends which are not statistically significant. Abstract

Antarctic sea ice shows a large degree of regional variability, which is partly driven by severe weather events. Here we bring a new perspective on synoptic sea ice changes by presenting the first in situ observations of an explosive extratropical cyclone crossing the winter Antarctic marginal ice zone (MIZ) in the South Atlantic. This is complemented by the analysis of subsequent cyclones and highlights the rapid variations that ice-landing cyclones cause on sea ice: Midlatitude warm oceanic air is advected onto the ice, and storm waves generated close to the ice edge contribute to the maintenance of an unconsolidated surface through which waves propagate far into the ice. MIZ features may thus extend further poleward in the Southern Ocean than currently estimated. A concentration-based MIZ definition is inadequate, since it fails to describe a sea ice configuration which is deeply rearranged by synoptic weather. Plain Language Summary The extent of Antarctic sea ice is characterized by large regional variations that are in stark contrast with the alarming decreasing trends found in the Arctic. This is partly due to the presence of severe weather events, like extratropical cyclones travelling through the Southern Ocean and reaching the marginal ice zone (MIZ). The MIZ is a region where the ocean, atmosphere, and sea ice processes are closely interlinked. We provide direct evidence of how winter polar cyclones rearrange the MIZ and how their effects extend into the ice-covered region as far as the Antarctic continent. We present the first observations of large ice drift, ice concentration, and temperature changes as an explosively deepening cyclone crosses the MIZ. This case study is complemented by analysis of subsequent but more frequent storms that confirms how storminess in the Southern Ocean maintains a sea ice surface that is less compact, more mobile, and more extended than previously anticipated. Abstract

BackgroundThe optimal treatment strategy for patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) remains undetermined. This study compared outcomes in patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) for EAC. MethodsPatients who underwent nCT or nCRT followed by surgery for EAC were identified from a prospective database (2000-2017) and included. After propensity score matching, the impact of the treatments on postoperative complications, in-hospital mortality, pathological outcomes, and survival rates were compared. ResultsOf the 396 eligible patients, 262 patients were analysed following matching with 131 patients in both groups. There were no significant differences between the nCT and nCRT groups for overall complications (59% vs 57%, P=0.802) or in-hospital mortality (2% vs 0%, P=0.156). Patients who had nCRT had more R0 resections (93% vs 83%, P=0.013), and higher pathological complete response rates (15% vs 5%, P<0.001). No differences in 5-year overall survival rates (nCT vs nCRT; 44% vs 33%, P=0.645) were found. ConclusionIn this study no differences between nCT and nCRT were seen in postoperative complications and in-hospital mortality in patients treated for EAC. Inspite of improved complete resection and pathological response there was no difference in the overall survival between the treatment modalities.

32. Multidecadal trend analysis of aerosol radiative properties at a global scale.

Abstract

In order to assess the global evolution of aerosol parameters affecting climate change, a long-term trend analyses of aerosol optical properties were performed on time series from 52 stations situated across five continents. The time series of measured scattering, backscattering and absorption coefficients as well as the derived single scattering albedo, backscattering fraction, scattering and absorption Ångström exponents covered at least 10 years and up to 40 years for some stations. The non-parametric seasonal Mann-Kendall (MK) statistical test associated with several prewhitening methods and with the Sen's slope were used as main trend analysis methods. Comparisons with General Least Mean Square associated with Autoregressive Bootstrap (GLS/ARB) and with standard Least Mean Square analysis (LMS) enabled confirmation of the detected MK statistically significant trends and the assessment of advantages and limitations of each method. Currently, scattering and backscattering coefficients trends are mostly decreasing in Europe and North America and are not statistically significant in Asia, while polar stations exhibit a mix of increasing and decreasing trends. A few increasing trends are also found at some stations in North America and Australia. Absorption coefficients time series also exhibit primarily decreasing trends. For single scattering albedo, 52 % of the sites exhibit statistically significant positive trends, mostly in Asia, Eastern/Northern Europe and Arctic, 18 % of sites exhibit statistically significant negative trends, mostly in central Europe and central North America, while the remaining 30 % of sites have trends, which are not statistically significant. In addition to evaluating trends for the overall time series, the evolution of the trends in sequential 10 year segments was also analyzed. For scattering and backscattering, statistically significant increasing 10 year trends are primarily found for earlier periods (10 year trends ending in 2010-2015) for polar stations and Mauna Loa. For most of the stations, the present-day statistically significant decreasing 10 year trends of the single scattering albedo were preceded by not statistically significant and statistically significant increasing 10 year trends. The effect of air pollution abatement policies in continental North America is very obvious in the 10 year trends of the scattering coefficient - there is a shift to statistically significant negative trends in 2010-2011 for all stations in the eastern and central US. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with metastatic colorectal cancer whose disease has progressed on oxaliplatin- and irinotecan-containing regimens may benefit from EGFR-inhibiting monoclonal antibodies if they do not contain mutations in the KRAS gene (are "wild type"). It is unknown whether these antibodies, such as cetuximab, are more efficacious in refractory metastatic colorectal cancer as monotherapy, or in combination with irinotecan. Lack of mutation in KRAS, BRAF and PIK3CA predicts response to EFGR-inhibitors. The ICECREAM trial examines the question of monotherapy versus combination with chemotherapy in two groups of patients: those with a "quadruple wild type" tumour genotype (no mutations in KRAS, NRAS, PI3KCA or BRAF genes) and those with the specific KRAS mutation in codon G13D, for whom possibly EGFR-inhibitor efficacy may be equivalent. METHODS AND DESIGN: ICECREAM is a randomised, phase II, open-label, controlled trial comparing the efficacy of cetuximab alone or with irinotecan in patients with "quadruple wild type" or G13D-mutated metastatic colorectal cancer, whose disease has progressed on, or who are intolerant of oxaliplatin- and fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy. The primary endpoint is the 6-month progression-free survival benefit of the treatment regimen. Secondary endpoints are response rate, overall survival, and quality of life. The tertiary endpoint is prediction of outcome with further biological markers. International collaboration has facilitated recruitment in this prospective trial of treatment in these infrequently found molecular subsets of colorectal cancer. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 82-89)., The Central Benguela inner shelf is characterised by hypoxic to anoxic sub-thermocline water conditions on a semi-permanent basis. Historical understanding of the incidence of hypoxia is that the inner shelf area off Namibia is one of the main areas of formation of low oxygen water (LOW) in the Benguela upwelling system. Local biogeochemical remineralization of organic matter mostly related to the primary production in surface waters (Chapman and Shannon, 1985) is thought to drive seasonal variability in sediment oxygen demand. New understanding of the system suggests that shelf hypoxia is driven by a remotely forced equatorial hypoxic boundary condition thought to trigger anaerobic remineralization and increased sediment fluxes of reduced metabolites (Monteiro et al., in press). The study focused on seasonal variability of sediment oxygen demand on the Namibian inner shelf and its relation to particulate organic carbon and reduced metabolite fluxes.

Abstract

Carbon dioxide plays a central role in earth's atmospheric, ocean and terrestrial systems.1,2 About 40% of the total anthropogenic emissions since 1750 have remained in the atmosphere, with the balance being removed by the ocean and vegetation sinks.3 Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations have been well documented,3 as have widespread impacts on human and natural systems, such as warmer surface temperatures, ocean warming and decreasing pH, loss of ice mass over the cryosphere, increasing global mean sea level, and alterations in the global hydrological cycle.3,4 The impact of increased atmospheric concentrations of CO2 on the biosphere includes shifting species extent, seasonal activities, migration patterns and abundances, as well as changes in species interactions. Monitoring of atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) has been identified as a priority by international agencies, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and government departments that are interested in mitigating the effects of climate change. South Africa has made a commitment to a low carbon future as part of its role in global climate policy instruments through a national low carbon development strategy.5,6 At the Conference of the Parties in November 2015 (COP21), high level of agreement by developed and developing countries encouraged stakeholders to urgent action to address climate change. The agreement emphasises the urgent mitigation pledges with respect to GHG emissions by 2020. As South Africa implements its White Paper on Climate Change, to stimulate a shift towards a low carbon economy, it faces a monitoring and evaluation challenge. Currently, the South African GHG emission inventory is based on fossil fuel emissions, as part of the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory System, under the National Air Quality Act, 2004 (Act No. 39 of 2004). Briefly, emissions are rarely measured directly, but rather based on proxy estimates of activity, extrapolated by an emission factor for the specific activity. There is therefore a need to independently assess the effectiveness of emissions reductions within the context of natural CO2 fluxes. Understanding the changing driving forces of climate change and evaluation of the carbon emission reduction activities requires long-term and high-precision measurements of CO2 gas emissions and sinks as well as their evolution. Land can act as both a source and a sink for GHGs.7 Currently the baseline GHG emissions from land and agriculture are thought to amount to 3.03x1010 kg CO2 eq per year in South Africa. The land sector is responsible for an uptake of 2.1x1010 kg CO2 eq per year while agriculture is responsible for a release of 5.06x1010 kg CO2 eq per year.7 The GHG emissions for South African industry amounted to ~5.45x1011 kg CO2 eq in 20108,9, with approximately 79% from the energy sector -- an order of magnitude larger than the emissions from agriculture7. Under the proposed White Paper policy, South Africa's GHG peak, plateau and decline trajectory anticipates emissions to peak at 6.1x1011 kg CO2 eq between 2020 and 2025, plateau at this range for about 10 years and decline to ~4.3x1011 kg CO2 eq by 2050.6 Determining these fluxes accurately will facilitate assessment of the proposed commitments to mitigation and adaptation strategies adopted by South Africa. At present there is infrastructure deployed in South Africa for the measurement of the concentrations and fluxes of CO2, which include observations in the atmosphere, on land and in the ocean.
