1. Anomalous electron-phonon coupling in kagome ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

Abstract

We present results of a Raman scattering study of the Kagome ferromagnet Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, with a focus on electronic and phononic excitations and their interplay. In addition, the electronic band structure is analyzed theoretically, enabling a semi-quantitative explanation of the spectra. A prominent feature in the electronic spectra is a redistribution of spectral weight from low to high energies starting at the Curie temperature Tc. The Raman intensity is suppressed below approximately 1000cm$^{-1}$ and increases above to a peak at 2000 cm$^{-1}$ in all symmetries. Two Raman active phonon modes are identified in A$_{1g}$ and E$_g$ symmetry. The A$_{1g}$ phonon couples strongly to the electronic continuum as indicated by the asymmetric Fano-type line shape. The asymmetry depends non-monotonically on temperature and is maximal close to the magnetic transition. In the limit $T\to 0$ the phonon is nearly symmetric. The evolution of the coupling strength and the electronic continuum as a function of temperature is attributed to a band splitting induced by the ferromagnetic phase transition which substantially reduces the DOS towards $T=0$. The $3d_{z^2}$ electrons of the Co atoms in the crystal field modulated by the A$_{1g}$ phonon are implied to be a critical component contributing to the strong electron-phonon coupling of that phonon. These results allow a comprehensive understanding of the bulk band structure evolution as a function of temperature in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, offering key insights for further studies of the driving force behind the long-range magnetic order and novel topological states in this compound., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We conducted a comparative study of the rare-earth infinite-layer nickelates films, RNiO2 (R = La, Pr, and Nd) using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). We found that the gross features of the orbital configurations are essentially the same, with minor variations in the detailed hybridization. For low-energy excitations, we unambiguously confirm the presence of damped magnetic excitations in all three compounds. By fitting to a linear spin-wave theory, comparable spin exchange coupling strengths and damping coefficients are extracted, indicating a universal magnetic structure in the infinite-layer nickelates. Interestingly, while signatures of a charge order are observed in LaNiO2 in the quasi-elastic region of the RIXS spectrum, it is absent in NdNiO2 and PrNiO2. This prompts further investigation into the universality and the origins of charge order within the infinite-layer inickelates., Comment: 8 figures. Accepted by Physical Review B

Abstract

BackgroundOrgan shortage is a major public health issue, and patients who die after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) could be a valuable source of organs. Here, our objective was to identify factors associated with organ donation after brain death complicating OHCA, in unselected patients entered into a comprehensive real-life registry covering a well-defined geographic area.MethodsWe prospectively analyzed consecutive adults with OHCA who were successfully resuscitated, but died in intensive care units in the Paris region in 2011-2018. The primary outcome was organ donation after brain death. Independent risk factors were identified using logistic regression analysis. One-year graft survival was assessed using Cox and log-rank tests.ResultsOf the 3061 included patients, 136 (4.4%) became organ donors after brain death, i.e., 28% of the patients with brain death. An interaction between admission pH and post-resuscitation shock was identified. Abstract

Theoretical analysis typically involves imaginary-time correlation functions. Inferring real-time dynamical response functions from this information is notoriously difficult. However, as we articulate here, it is straightforward to compute imaginary-time correlators from the measured frequency dependence of (real-time) response functions. In addition to facilitating comparison between theory and experiment, the proposed approach can be useful in extracting certain aspects of the (long-time relaxational) dynamics from a complex data set. We illustrate this with an analysis of the nematic response inferred from Raman scattering spectroscopy on the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, which includes a new method for identifying a putative quantum critical contribution to that response.

Abstract

We report results of Raman scattering experiments on twin-free BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with the main focus placed on understanding the influence of electronic and spin degrees of freedom on the lattice dynamics. In particular, we scrutinize the $E_g$ modes and the As $A_{1g}$ mode. Each of the two $E_g$ phonons in the tetragonal phase is observed to split into a $B_{2g}$ and a $B_{3g}$ mode upon entering the orthorhombic stripe-magnetic phase. The splitting amounts to approximately 10\,cm$^{-1}$ and less than 5\,cm$^{-1}$ for the low- and the high-energy $E_g$ mode, respectively. The detailed study of the fully symmetric As mode using parallel incident and outgoing photon polarizations along either the antiferromagnetic or the ferromagnetic Fe-Fe direction reveals an anisotropic variation of the spectral weight with the energy of the exciting laser indicating a polarization-dependent resonance effect. Along with the experiments we present results from density functional theory calculations of the phonon eigenvectors, the dielectric function, and the Raman tensor elements. The comparison of theory and experiment indicates that (i) orbital-selective electronic correlations are crucial to understand the lattice dynamics and (ii) all phonon anomalies originate predominantly from the magnetic ordering and the corresponding reconstruction of the electronic bands at all energies.

Abstract

We report the development of a detection optics for the integration of Raman scattering and scanning probe microscopy at low temperature based on a parabolic mirror. In our set-up half of the paraboloid mirror covers a solid angle of $\pi$ corresponding to a numerical aperture of N.A.\,$\approx 0.85$. The optical system can be used for far- and near-field spectroscopy. In the far field the polarizations can be maintained to within 80-90\%. In combination with a scanning microscope (AFM/STM), tunneling or near-field experiments are possible with less than 10\% loss of aperture. Our set-up provides ideal conditions for the future development of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) at low temperature., Comment: 4 pages 5 figures

Abstract

We study the interplay of fluctuations and superconductivity in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (Ba-122) compounds with Ba and Fe substituted by K ($p$ doping) and Co ($n$ doping), respectively. To this end we measured electronic Raman spectra as a function of polarisation and temperature. We observe gap excitations and fluctuations for all doping levels studied. The response from fluctuations is much stronger for Co substitution and, according to the selection rules and the temperature dependence, originates from the exchange of two critical spin fluctuations with characteristic wave vectors $(\pm\pi, 0)$ and $(0,\pm\pi)$. At 22\% K doping ($p=0.22$), we find the same selection rules and spectral shape for the fluctuations but the intensity is smaller by a factor of 5. Since there exists no nematic region above the orthorhombic spin-density-wave (SDW) phase the identification of the fluctuations via the temperature dependence is not possible. The gap excitations in the superconducting state indicate strongly anisotropic near-nodal gaps for Co substitution which make the observation of collective modes difficult. The variation with doping of the spectral weights of the $A_{1g}$ and $B_{1g}$ gap features does not support the influence of fluctuations on Cooper pairing. Therefore, the observation of Bardasis-Schrieffer modes inside the nearly clean gaps on the K-doped side remains the only experimental evidence for the relevance of fluctuations for pairing., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Nematic fluctuations and order play a prominent role in material classes such as the cuprates, some ruthenates or the iron-based compounds and may be interrelated with superconductivity. In iron-based compounds signatures of nematicity have been observed in a variety of experiments. However, the fundamental question as to the relevance of the related spin, charge or orbital fluctuations remains open. Here, we use inelastic light (Raman) scattering and study Ba(Fe 1-x Co x ) 2 As 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.085) for getting direct access to nematicity and the underlying critical fluctuations with finite characteristic wavelengths. We show that the response from fluctuations appears only in B 1g (x 2 - y 2) symmetry (1 Fe unit cell). The scattering amplitude increases towards the structural transition at T s but vanishes only below the magnetic ordering transition at T SDW < T s, suggesting a magnetic origin of the fluctuations. The theoretical analysis explains the selection rules and the temperature dependence of the fluctuation response. These results make magnetism the favourite candidate for driving the series of transitions.

16. Ground-state energy and Wigner crystallization in thick 2D-electron systems

Abstract

The ground state energy of the 2-D Wigner crystal is determined as a function of the thickness of the electron layer and the crystal structure. The method of evaluating the exchange-correlation energy is tested using known results for the infinitely-thin 2D system. Two methods, one based on the local-density approximation(LDA), and another based on the constant-density approximation (CDA) are established by comparing with quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results. The LDA and CDA estimates for the Wigner transition of the perfect 2D fluid are at $r_s=38$ and 32 respectively, compared with $r_s=35\pm5$ from QMC. For thick-2D layers as found in Hetero-junction-insulated-gate field-effect transistors, the LDA and CDA predictions of the Wigner transition are at $r_s=20.5$ and 15.5 respectively. 20. Evolution of military evacuation activity in French Guiana over 10 years: a retrospective observational study

Abstract

BackgroundThree permanent military operations are established in French Guiana. The Cayenne medical unit is a French military search and rescue unit and provides MEDEVAC and CASEVAC for ill and injured soldiers. The main objective of this study was to describe the temporal trends of its evacuation missions over 10 years. The secondary purpose was to document the means used for these missions.MethodsThis retrospective observational study included patients who were evacuated for a medical reason or an injury during military operations in French Guiana. We collected the data from the computerised registers the medical department had stored.ResultsFrom 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2019, 1070 patients were included, representing a median annual incidence of 115 (IQR 91–122) evacuations. Of these, 602 (59%) were evacuated by helicopter, 214 (21%) by airplane, 182 (18%) by ambulance and 19 (2%) by pirogue.Reasons for evacuation were diseases in 664 (62%) patients, non-battle injuries in 389 (36%) patients and battle injuries in 17 (2%) patients. Finally, 286 (29%) evacuations were MEDEVAC and 712 (71%) were CASEVAC.Over the years, the increasing number of evacuations reached a maximum of 183 in 2018. Helicopter evacuations, once the primary mode of evacuation, have declined proportionately in favour of other means of evacuation.ConclusionEvacuation missions by the Cayenne medical unit increased over the 10-year study period, while helicopter use decreased. This evolution is a response to the constraints of adapting military operations to fight against illegal gold mining in the Amazonian Forest. Improvement of the means and procedures allows provision of the best care to patients while ensuring the ongoing conduct of military operations.

Abstract

Für den Qualitätsindikator „Präoperative Verweildauer“ wird im Rahmen der externen stationären Qualitätssicherung bei der operativen Versorgung hüftgelenknaher Femurfrakturen über 48 h nach stationärer Aufnahme ein Toleranzbereich von ≤15 % angegeben. Anhand des Strukturierten Dialogs Rheinland-Pfalz (2014) wurden die Ursachen einer verzögerten Frakturversorgung über 48 h hinaus untersucht. Es wurden insgesamt 331 Einzelanfragen analysiert. In 60,7 % wurden patientenbezogene, in 13,3 % logistische Gründe angegeben. In 9,1 % wurde die Begründung als nicht plausibel gewertet. Bei 7,3 % wurden aufgrund softwarebedingt fehlender Spezifikationen falsche präoperative Verweildauern generiert. In 6,6 % lag ein EDV-Problem oder eine fehlerhafte Kodierung vor. Häufigster Verzögerungsgrund war die Antikoagulation (25,7 %). Die Aussagekraft des Qualitätsindikators „Präoperative Verweildauer“ ohne Aufgliederung in patientenbezogene und logistische Gründe ist kritisch zu betrachten. For the “preoperative stay” quality indicator , which is part of the external quality assurance for proximal femoral fractures (module 17/1), a tolerance range for surgery within 48 h after admission of ≤15 % is given. The structured dialog (2014) in Rheinland-Pfalz was analyzed with respect to reasons for delaying surgery for more than 48 h after admission. A total of 331 cases were analyzed. In 60.7 % patient-related reasons and in 13.3 % administrative reasons were found. In 9.1 % the statements were not feasible. Due to a lack of software-related specifications in 7.3 % a wrong preoperative length of stay was generated. Wrong coding or a computer-related problem was found in 6.6 %. The most common reason for delay was the intake of an anticoagulant (25.7 %). The significance of the quality indicator “Preoperative stay” without division into whether this was administrative or patient-related must be considered critically.

Abstract

A defining signature of strongly correlated electronic systems is a rich phase diagram, which consists of multiple broken symmetries, such as magnetism, superconductivity and charge order1,2. In the recently discovered nickelate superconductors3–10, a large antiferromagnetic exchange energy has been reported, which implies the existence of strong electronic correlations11. However, signatures of a broken-symmetry state other than superconductivity have not yet been observed. Here we observe charge ordering in infinite-layer nickelates La1−xSrxNiO2 using resonant X-ray scattering. The parent compound orders along the Ni–O bond direction with an incommensurate wavevector, distinct from the stripe order observed in other nickelates12–14 that propagates along a direction 45° to the Ni–O bond. The resonance profile we measure indicates that ordering originates from the nickelate layers and induces a parasitic charge modulation of lanthanum electrons. Upon doping, the charge order diminishes and its wavevector shifts towards commensurate, hinting that strong electronic correlations are likely to be responsible for the ordered state. Our results suggest that the existence of charge order and its potential interplay with antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity are important themes in nickel-based superconductors.
