The spectral distribution is a fundamental property of non-monochromatic optical radiation. It is commonly used in research and practical applications when studying how light interacts with matter and living organisms, including humans. In the field of lighting, misconceptions about the spectral distribution of light are responsible for unfounded claims, which pervade the scientific and technical communities. Starting from the definition of the spectral distribution, this paper describes the ambiguities and errors associated with a purely graphical analysis of the spectral distribution. It also emphasizes the importance of considering the particle nature of light in research involving both visual and non-visual effects, which implies using the spectral distribution expressed in the photon system of units, a system that has been seldom used in lighting research for historical reasons. The authors encourage lighting engineers and researchers to determine which system is best suited to their work and then proceed with the correct use of spectral distributions and of spectral weighting functions for applications involving optical radiation. © The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers 2024.

Research project “Future photometry based on solid-state lighting products” (EMPIR 15SIB07 PhotoLED) has investigated the fundamental requirements for photometry based on white lightemitting diode (LED) sources. The project has developed new LED illuminants, LED standard lamps for luminous intensity and luminous flux, as well as new photometric measurement methods, addressing many technical challenges of the CIE research strategy. In this paper, we present the outcome of the 3-year scientific research project, whose work has been carried out by NMIs, universities, test laboratories and industrial partners working in the field of photometry and solid-state lighting.

This work presents an investigation on different methods for the calculation of the angle of attack and the underlying induced velocity on wind turbine blades using data obtained from three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Several methods are examined and their advantages, as well as shortcomings, are presented. The investigations are performed for two 10 MW reference wind turbines under axial inflow conditions, namely the turbines designed in the EU AVATAR and INNWIND.EU projects. The results show that the evaluated methods are in good agreement with each other at the mid-span, though some deviations are observed at the root and tip regions of the blades. This indicates that CFD results can be used for the calibration of induction modeling for Blade Element Momentum (BEM) tools. Moreover, using any of the proposed methods, it is possible to obtain airfoil characteristics for lift and drag coefficients as a function of the angle of attack.

The aim of this work is to develop LED-based illuminants that describe typical white LED products based on their Spectral Power Distributions (SPDs). Some of these new illuminants will be recommended in the update of the CIE publication 15 on colorimetry wi th the other typical illuminants, and among them, some could be used to complement the CIE standard illuminant A for calibration use in photometry.

The activating natural killer (NK)-cell receptor KIR3DS1 has been linked to the outcome of various human diseases, including delayed progression of disease caused by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), yet a ligand that would account for its biological effects has remained unknown. We screened 100 HLA class I proteins and found that KIR3DS1 bound to HLA-F, a result we confirmed biochemically and functionally. Primary human KIR3DS1(+) NK cells degranulated and produced antiviral cytokines after encountering HLA-F and inhibited HIV-1 replication in vitro. Activation of CD4(+) T cells triggered the transcription and surface expression of HLA-F mRNA and HLA-F protein, respectively, and induced binding of KIR3DS1. HIV-1 infection further increased the transcription of HLA-F mRNA but decreased the binding of KIR3DS1, indicative of a mechanism for evading recognition by KIR3DS1(+) NK cells. Thus, we have established HLA-F as a ligand of KIR3DS1 and have demonstrated cell-context-dependent expression of HLA-F that might explain the widespread influence of KIR3DS1 in human disease.
