Search

Space debris are composed of both natural and human made objects, some in near Earth orbits while others are passing through deep space. Asteroids may represent one form of near Earth and deep space debris. In this article we report on a set of asteroid observations from the southern hemisphere. We indicate that Apollo and Aten class asteroids represent another form of deep space debris of a potentially hazardous nature to orbiting spacecraft and/or Earth based locations. We also show some of the operational challenges, types of facilities and the importance of geographic diversity, that is, necessary for detecting, observing and characterising asteroids, especially PHA’s. For many years, space agencies and institutions have observed and monitored near Earth asteroids and objects (NEO’s) using high gain radio frequency antennas and optical telescopes in the northern hemisphere (GSSR, Arecibo, Catalina, Pan-STARRS, Atlas and Linear) 1) However a regular operational system to monitor the southern skies does not have the same level of maturity and is where a percentage of asteroids and various human made objects are not detected until they pass into northern skies. To fill that gap the Southern Hemisphere Asteroid Radar Program (SHARP) 2) located in Australia uses available antenna time on either a 70 or 34 m beam waveguide antenna located at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) to transmit a Doppler compensated continuous radio wave at 2.114 GHz (14.2 cm) and 7.15945 GHz (4.2 cm) toward the NEO and receive its echoes at the 64 m Parkes or 6 m × 22 m Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) antennas at Narrabri in Australia. This mode of NEO observation is termed a deep space bistatic radar. The southern hemisphere program has also recently been joined by the 12 m University of Tasmania antennas at Hobart (Tasmania) and Katherine (Northern Territory). Combining SHARPS bistatic radar with small optical apertures located at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and University of Western Australia (UWA) allows combined optical/RF NEO detections. Whilst sub-metre class optical instruments have contributed independently to asteroid detection over decades, the use of coordinated small 0.3–0.5 m instruments synchronized to large asteroid radars offers an observational flexibility and adaptability when larger optical systems 3) are dedicated to other forms of professional optical astronomy. Since 2015, SHARP has illuminated and tracked over 30 NEO’s ranging in diameter from 7 to 5000 m at ranges of 0.1–18 lunar distances (LD) from Australia.

NASA has five robotic space probes on escape trajectories from the solar system (Pioneer 11, Pioneer 12, Voyager 1, Voyager 2, and New Horizons), and the Interstellar Probe is a concept likely to be submitted for consideration in the forthcoming Solar & Space Physics Decadal Survey. While none of these robotic probes will be operational on the time scale that it would take to reach another star, it is natural to ask whether another civilization might also be sending out interstellar probes. Serious consideration of such interstellar probes dates at least to R. Bracewell in the early 1960s, and the discovery of 1I/2017 ‘Oumuamua has rekindled some of that interest. I consider what limits exist on signatures of extraterrestrial technology might be present in the Solar System, considering both objects on various orbits (“probes”) and surface artifacts, using data available from planetary exploration and astronomical sky surveys. Perhaps not surprisingly, the completeness to which the Solar System has been searched varies as a function of distance from the Sun. However, with notable exceptions, only extremely crude limits can be placed on the existence of interstellar probes. I also highlight areas that might be profitable for improving these limits considerably.

This poster reports the results from a student-led Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) targeting the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy as a part of the Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) collaboration between the Lewis Center for Educational Research (LCER) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). GAVRT’s frequency of observation (8.4 GHz) is not covered by most other SETI programs. Students associated with LCER write analytic reports of spectral data targeting specific regions of the Milky Way identifying interference, noise, and candidate signals potentially originating from intelligent sources. GAVRT-SETI’s search is guided by the assumption that a narrow-band radio signal from a fixed location in the sky, occurring across multiple observation periods, is unlikely to be caused by a natural source. Thus, we searched the report data for similar signals occurring either on adjacent scan lines within the telescope resolution (doublets, triplets) or during different observation periods within the same region of sky (potential candidates) using general data science pre-processing and analysis approaches. Our analysis revealed patterns in the distribution of interference and candidate signal frequencies. The non-randomness of these patterns suggests that these radio sources are non-trivial and may be able to be identified upon further examination.

Neutral hydrogen pervades the infant Universe, and its redshifted 21-cm signal allows one to chart the Universe. This signal allows one to probe astrophysical processes such as the formation of the first stars, galaxies, (super)massive black holes and enrichment of the pristine gas from z~6 to z~30, as well as fundamental physics related to gravity, dark matter, dark energy and particle physics at redshifts beyond that. As one enters the Dark Ages (z>30), the Universe becomes pristine. Ground-based low-frequency radio telescopes aim to detect the spatial fluctuations of the 21-cm signal. Complementary, global 21-cm experiments aim to measure the sky-averaged 21-cm signal. Escaping RFI and the ionosphere has motivated space-based missions, such as the Dutch-Chinese NCLE instrument (currently in lunar L2), the proposed US-driven lunar or space-based instruments DAPPER and FARSIDE, the lunar-orbit interferometer DSL (China), and PRATUSH (India). To push beyond the current z~25 frontier, though, and measure both the global and spatial fluctuations (power-spectra/tomography) of the 21-cm signal, low-frequency (1-100MHz; BW~50MHz; z>13) space-based interferometers with vast scalable collecting areas (1-10-100 km2), large filling factors (~1) and large fields-of-view (4pi sr.) are needed over a mission lifetime of >5 years. In this ESA White Paper, we argue for the development of new technologies enabling interferometers to be deployed, in space (e.g. Earth-Sun L2) or in the lunar vicinity (e.g. surface, orbit or Earth-Moon L2), to target this 21-cm signal. This places them in a stable environment beyond the reach of most RFI from Earth and its ionospheric corruptions, enabling them to probe the Dark Ages as well as the Cosmic Dawn, and allowing one to investigate new (astro)physics that is inaccessible in any other way in the coming decades. The Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) facility is the largest fully steerable ground-based radar in the world for nonclassified high-resolution ranging and imaging of planetary and small-body targets. Over the years, the use of the GSSR to detect and characterize near-Earth objects (NEOs) has become critical to keep track of potential Earth-impacting hazardous NEO. This article relates the specific modifications made to the GSSR hardware and procedures in the last few years, as well as the new capabilities derived from those upgrades: reduced complexity in remote operations, increased experimental design versatility, and increased performance on bistatic radar experiments from GSSR to other complexes. In addition, we dedicate a section to provide an update on the current GSSR power capabilities as the new klystrons are installed. The work detailed in this article is intended to reach the broader science community in order to communicate how those modifications and the derived new capabilities can make science experiments more successful.

The Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE) will provide an entirely new view on particle acceleration and transport in the inner heliosphere by creating the first low radio frequency interferometer in space to localize heliospheric radio emissions. By imaging and determining the location of decametric-hectometric (DH) radio bursts from 0.1 MHz-20 MHz, SunRISE will provide key information on particle acceleration mechanisms associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and the magnetic field topology from active regions into interplanetary space. Six small spacecraft, of a 6U form factor, will fly in a supersynchronous geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) orbit within about 10 km of each other, in a passive formation, and image the Sun in a portion of the spectrum that is blocked by the ionosphere and cannot be observed from Earth. Key aspects that enable this mission are that only position knowledge of the spacecraft is required, not active control, and that the architecture involves a modest amount of on-board processing coupled with significant ground-based processing for navigation, position determination, and science operations. Mission-enabling advances in software-defined radios, GPS navigation and timing, and small spacecraft technologies, developed and flown on the DARPA High Frequency Research (DHFR), the Community Initiative for Continuing Earth Radio Occultation (CICERO), and the Mars Cube One (MarCO) missions, have made this mission affordable and low-risk. The SunRISE mission will involve utilizing commercial access to space, in which the SunRISE spacecraft will be carried to their target orbit as a secondary payload in conjunction with a larger host spacecraft intended for GEO.

Galaxy mergers occur frequently in the early universe and bring multiple supermassive black holes (SMBHs) into the nucleus, where they may eventually coalesce. Identifying post-merger-scale (i.e., 2, but critical to constraining the progenitors of SMBH mergers. The redshift z~2 also marks the epoch of peak activity of luminous quasars, hence probing this spatial regime at high redshift is of particular significance in understanding the evolution of quasars. However, given stringent resolution requirements, there is currently no confirmed 2. Here we report two sub-arcsec double quasars at z>2 discovered from a targeted search with a novel astrometric technique, demonstrating a high success rate (~50%) in this systematic approach. These high-redshift double quasars could be the long-sought kpc-scale dual SMBHs, or sub-arcsec gravitationally-lensed quasar images. One of these double quasars (at z=2.95) was spatially resolved with optical spectroscopy, and slightly favors the scenario of a physical quasar pair with a projected separation of 3.5 kpc (0.46"). Follow-up observations of double quasars discovered by this targeted approach will be able to provide the first observational constraints on kpc-scale dual SMBHs at z>2., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy (April 2021)

Scientific studies using spacecraft radio links, which are shared with communications and navigation functions, have been carried out on almost every solar system exploration mission in the past five decades. They have led to numerous scientific discoveries as well as technological advances. These radio science experiments have investigated the interior structure of every planet in the solar system and several of their satellites, the Moon, and several comets and asteroids and sounded the atmospheres of every planet in the solar system except Mercury, and the atmospheres of Pluto and several large satellites, the Io Plasma Torus, Saturn's and Uranus' rings, and the solar corona. Future experiments at Mercury, the Jovian system, asteroid Psyche, and other targets are currently in various planning and development phases. Over the next 30 years, significant advances in radio and laser link science technologies, including one order of magnitude improvement achievable in range rate and range accuracy and advanced calibration techniques, could enable many additional scientific breakthroughs. Future exploration concepts focus on applications of small spacecraft and entry probes and can include constellations for studies of atmospheric dynamics, interior structures, and surface properties. Selected science-enabling technologies specific to small spacecraft instrumentation on future missions are under study. Examples include field tests of radio scattering to determine surface properties, constellations for high-resolution spatial and temporal atmospheric sounding, small science-quality software-defined transponders, miniature ultrastable oscillators, and advanced radio-metric calibrations at the Deep Space Network.

Ground-based interferometry at mm-cm wavelengths provides a powerful tool for characterizing satellite surfaces and atmospheres. We present the science enabled by the ALMA (current) and ngVLA (proposed) arrays, including recent results as well as future work in the context of planned and proposed spacecraft missions.

An ultra-long-wavelength radio telescope on the far side of the Moon has significant advantages compared to Earth-based and Earth-orbiting telescopes, including: 1. Enabling observations of the Universe at wavelengths longer than 10 meters (i.e., frequencies below 30 MHz), wavelengths at which critical cosmological or extrasolar planetary signatures are predicted to appear, yet cannot be observed from the ground due to absorption from the Earth's ionosphere; and 2. The Moon acts as a physical shield that isolates a far-side lunar-surface telescope from radio interference from sources on the Earth's surface, the ionosphere, Earth-orbiting satellites, and the Sun's radio emission during the lunar night. In this paper, we present the conceptual design of the Lunar Crater Radio Telescope (LCRT) on the far side of the Moon. We propose to deploy a wire mesh using wall-climbing DuAxel robots in a 3–5 km diameter crater, with a suitable depth-to-diameter ratio, to form a parabolic reflector with a 1 km diameter. LCRT will be the largest filled-aperture radio telescope in the Solar System; larger than the former Arecibo telescope (305 m diameter, 3 cm - 1 m wavelength band, 0.3-10 GHz frequency band) and the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) (500 m diameter, 0.1-4.3 m wavelength band, 60–3000 MHz frequency band). LCRT's science objective is to track the evolution of the neutral intergalactic medium before and during the formation of the first stars in the 10–100 m wavelength band (3–30 MHz frequency band), which is consistent with priorities identified in the Astrophysics decadal survey. We describe LCRT's science objectives and the key technology challenges that need to be overcome to make this concept a reality. We envisage that LCRT will open a new window for humanity's exploration of the Universe.

The Earth’s Ionosphere limits radio measurements on its surface, blocking out any radiation below 10 MHz. Valuable insight into many astrophysical processes could be gained by having a radio interferometer in space to image the low frequency window, which has never been achieved. One application for such a system is observing type II bursts that track solar energetic particle acceleration occurring at Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)-driven shocks. This is one of the primary science targets for SunRISE, a 6 CubeSat interferometer to circle the Earth in a GEO graveyard orbit. SunRISE is a NASA Heliophysics Mission of Opportunity that began Phase B (Formulation) in June 2020, and plans to launch for a 12-month mission in mid-2023. In this work we present an update to the data processing and science analysis pipeline for SunRISE and evaluate its performance in localizing type II bursts around a simulated CME.To create realistic virtual type II input data, we employ a 2-temperature MHD simulation of the May 13th 2005 CME event, and superimpose realistic radio emission models on the CME-driven shock front, and propagate the signal through the simulated array. Data cuts based on different plasma parameter thresholds (e.g. de Hoffman-Teller velocity and angle between shock normal and the upstream magnetic field) are tested to get the best match to the true recorded emission. This model type II emission is then fed to the SunRISE data processing pipeline to ensure that the array can localize the emission. We include realistic thermal noise dominated by the galactic background at these low frequencies, as well as new sources of phase noise from positional uncertainty of each spacecraft. We test simulated trajectories of SunRISE and image what the array recovers, comparing it to the virtual input, finding that SunRISE can resolve the source of type II emission to within its prescribed goal of 1/3 the CME width. This shows that SunRISE will significantly advance the scientific community’s understanding of type II burst generation, and consequently, acceleration of solar energetic particles at CMEs. This unique combination of SunRISE observations and MHD recreations of space weather events will allow an unprecedented look into the plasma parameters important for these processes.

Observing planetary auroral radio emission is the most promising method to detect exoplanetary magnetic fields, the knowledge of which will provide valuable insights into the planet's interior structure, atmospheric escape, and habitability. We present LOFAR-LBA circularly polarized beamformed observations of the exoplanetary systems 55 Cancri, $\upsilon$ Andromedae, and $\tau$ Bo\"{o}tis. We tentatively detect circularly polarized bursty emission from the $\tau$ Bo\"{o}tis system in the range 14-21 MHz with a flux density of $\sim$890 mJy and with a significance of $\sim$3$\sigma$. For this detection, no signal is seen in the OFF-beams, and we do not find any potential causes which might cause false positives. We also tentatively detect slowly variable circularly polarized emission from $\tau$ Bo\"{o}tis in the range 21-30 MHz with a flux density of $\sim$400 mJy and with a statistical significance of $>$8$\sigma$. The slow emission is structured in the time-frequency plane and shows an excess in the ON-beam with respect to the two simultaneous OFF-beams. Close examination casts some doubts on the reality of the slowly varying signal. We discuss in detail all the arguments for and against an actual detection. Furthermore, a $\sim$2$\sigma$ marginal signal is found from the $\upsilon$ Andromedae system and no signal is detected from the 55 Cancri system. Assuming the detected signals are real, we discuss their potential origin. Their source probably is the $\tau$ Bootis planetary system, and a possible explanation is radio emission from the exoplanet $\tau$ Bootis b via the cyclotron maser mechanism. Assuming a planetary origin, we derived limits for the planetary polar surface magnetic field strength, finding values compatible with theoretical predictions. Further low-frequency observations are required to confirm this possible first detection of an exoplanetary radio signal. This paper reports Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the binary system HD 41004 that are among the deepest images ever obtained at 150~MHz and 400 MHz in the search for radio emission from exoplanets. The HD 41004 binary system consists of a K1 V primary star and an M2 V secondary; both stars are host to a massive planet or brown dwarf. Analogous to planets in our solar system that emit at radio wavelengths due to their strong magnetic fields, one or both of the planet or brown dwarf in the HD 41004 binary system are also thought to be sources of radio emission. Various models predict HD~41004Bb to have one of the largest expected flux densities at 150 MHz. The observations at 150 MHz cover almost the entire orbital period of HD 41004Bb, and about $20\%$ of the orbit is covered at 400 MHz. We do not detect radio emission, setting 3$\sigma$ limits of 1.8 mJy at 150 MHz and 0.12 mJy at 400 MHz. We report results of Canberra-ATCA Doppler-only continuous wave (CW) radar observations of near-Earth asteroid (163899) 2003 SD220 at a receiving frequency of 7159 MHz (4.19 cm) on 2018 December 20, 21, and 22 during its close approach within 0.019 au (7.4 lunar distances). Echo power spectra provide evidence that the shape is significantly elongated, asymmetric, and has at least one relatively large concavity. An average spectrum per track yields an OC (opposite sense of circular polarisation) radar cross section of 0.39, 0.27, and 0.25 km$^{2}$, respectively, with an uncertainty of 35 \%. Variations by roughly a factor of two in the limb-to-limb bandwidth over the three days indicate rotation of an elongated object. We obtain a circular polarization ratio of 0.21 $\pm$ 0.07 that is consistent with, but somewhat lower than, the average among other S-class near-Earth asteroids observed by radar., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Icarus

One application for such a system is observing type II bursts that track solar energetic particle acceleration occurring at Coronal Mass Ejection (CME)-driven shocks. In this work we create a data processing pipeline for the pathfinder mission SunRISE, a 6 CubeSat interferometer to circle the Earth in a GEO graveyard orbit, and evaluate its performance in localizing type II bursts with a simulated CME. Traditional radio astronomy software is hard coded to assume an Earth based array. To circumvent this, we manually calculate the antenna separations and insert them along with the simulated visibilities into a CASA MS file for analysis. We model the response of different array configurations over the 25 hour orbit, combining an ephemeris for the Sun with simulated recovered positions of spacecraft using GPS localization to get the array geometry into the correct frame for processing. We include realistic thermal noise dominated by the galactic background at these low frequencies, as well as new sources of phase noise from positional uncertainty of each spacecraft. We test simulated trajectories of SunRISE and image what the array recovers, comparing it to the virtual input, finding that SunRISE can resolve the source of type II emission to within its prescribed goal of 1/3 the CME width more than 99% of the time with 5 or 6 spacecraft, and 97.5% of the time with 4 spacecraft.

We have implemented a single wideband receiver package that could cover the 8 to 48 GHz frequency range of the ngVLA. The current JVLA covers this frequency range employing five distinct receiver packages. We estimate that reducing the number of receiving systems required to cover the full frequency range should reduce operating costs. The receiver package we developed consists of a quad-ridge feed horn, low-noise amplifiers (LNA), and a down-converter to analog intermediate frequencies. Both the feedhorn and the LNA are cryogenically cooled. On the LNA front we pursued two 8–48 GHz MMIC designs, the first using 70-nm gallium arsenide, metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistors (HEMT), and the second using 35-nm indium phosphide HEMTs. In this paper, we report the measured gain and noise temperatures of these LNAs.

Scientific studies using spacecraft radio links have been conducted on almost every Solar System exploration mission in the past five decades and have led to numerous discoveries. Radio Science experiments have elucidated the thermal history of the Moon from high resolution gravitational field measurements, unveiled the interiors of Titan, Enceladus, Mercury, Phobos, Vesta and Ceres providing key evidence for identifying subsurface oceans on icy moons; sounded Titan, Saturn, and Pluto's atmospheres, and refined models for the atmospheres, surfaces, and interior structure of Mars and Venus. A Juno experiment is in progress measuring the gravitational field of Jupiter to reveal its interior structures, as did a similar recent Cassini experiment with Saturn. Experiments at Mercury, the Jovian system, and other targets, are in development or planning phases. Over the next 30 years, significant advances in radio and laser link-science technologies, including nearly one order of magnitude improvement achievable in range-rate and range accuracy, could enable many new scientific breakthroughs. Future exploration concepts in many cases focus on applications of small spacecraft and can include spacecraft constellations for studies of atmospheric dynamics, interior structures, and surface properties. A set of science-enabling radio link technologies specific to small spacecraft instrumentation on future solar system missions are under study and development. Examples include field tests of radio scattering to determine soil properties, smallsat constellations for dense geographic and temporal atmospheric probing, small science-quality software-defined transponders, miniature ultra-stable oscillators, and advanced radio-metric calibrations at the Deep Space Network. This paper describes many of these technologies and their scientific applications.

A radio telescope on the far-side of the Moon has tremendous advantages compared to Earth-based telescopes because it could observe the universe at wavelengths that are hitherto poorly explored by humans so far and the Moon acts as a physical shield that isolates the telescope from the radio interference and noises from Earth. This paper presents a novel concept for building a radio telescope on the far-side of the Moon. The main idea is to shape a suitable existing lunar crater (1–50km in diameter) on the far-side of the Moon into a spherical reflecting dish. The proposed Lunar Crater Radio Telescope (LCRT) would be able to observe the universe in the 5–100m wavelength band (i.e., 3–60MHz radio frequency band). The key innovations of this concept are: (1) LCRT will be the largest filled-aperture radio telescope in the Solar System. (2) LCRT could potentially make tremendous scientific discoveries in fields of cosmology and extrasolar planets by observing the universe in the 5–100m λ band (i.e., 3–60MHz ν band) that has been hitherto poorly explored. (3) It would require only a few robots from Earth and autonomously modify an existing lunar crater to build the LCRT; thereby significantly reducing launch weight and cost compared to all previous lunar-surface telescope mission concepts. (4) Furthermore, the Earth-based robots are not consumed during construction of LCRT. Therefore, they could create a network of LCRTs to (i) observe different regions of the universe, and (ii) enable lunar Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) astronomy. We envisage that this concept would unlock the potential for ground-breaking scientific discoveries in radio astronomy.

From rovers on the surface of Mars to Voyager 1 near the edge of the solar system, spacecraft regularly call home to Earth. For five decades, the Deep Space Network has been at the other end of the line.

We estimate the 21 cm Radio Background from accretion onto the first intermediate-mass Black Holes between $z\approx 30$ and $z\approx 16$. Combining potentially optimistic, but plausible, scenarios for black hole formation and growth with empirical correlations between luminosity and radio-emission observed in low-redshift active galactic nuclei, we find that a model of black holes forming in molecular cooling halos is able to produce a 21 cm background that exceeds the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at $z \approx 17$ though models involving larger halo masses are not entirely excluded. Such a background could explain the surprisingly large amplitude of the 21 cm absorption feature recently reported by the EDGES collaboration. Such black holes would also produce significant X-ray emission and contribute to the $0.5-2$ keV soft X-ray background at the level of $\approx 10^{-13}-10^{-12}$ erg sec$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ deg$^{-2}$, consistent with existing constraints. In order to avoid heating the IGM over the EDGES trough, these black holes would need to be obscured by Hydrogen column depths of $ N_\text{H} \sim 5 \times 10^{23} \text{cm}^{-2}$. Such black holes would avoid violating contraints on the CMB optical depth from Planck if their UV photon escape fractions were below $f_{\text{esc}} \lesssim 0.1$, which would be a natural result of $N_\text{H} \sim 5 \times 10^{23} \text{cm}^{-2}$ imposed by an unheated IGM., 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted to ApJ, replacement to match submitted version

For over a decade, the structure of the inner “hole” in the transition disk around TW Hydrae has been a subject of debate. To probe the innermost regions of the protoplanetary disk, observations at the highest possible spatial resolution are required. We present new interferometric data of TW Hya from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths. We confront existing models of the disk structure with the complete data set and develop a new, detailed radiative-transfer model. This model is characterized by: 1) a spatial separation of the largest grains from the small disk grains; and 2) a smooth inner rim structure, rather than a sharp disk edge.

Spacecraft carrying optical communication lasers can be treated as artificial stars, whose relative astrometry to Gaia reference stars provides spacecraft positions in the plane-of-sky for optical navigation. To be comparable to current Deep Space Network delta-Differential One-way Ranging measurements, thus sufficient for navigation, nanoradian optical astrometry is required. Here we describe our error budget, techniques for achieving nanoradian level ground-base astrometry, and preliminary results from a 1 m telescope. We discuss also how these spacecraft may serve as artificial reference stars for adaptive optics, high precision astrometry to detect exoplanets, and tying reference frames defined by radio and optical measurements.

In the lead-up to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, several next-generation radio telescopes and upgrades are already being built around the world. These include APERTIF (The Netherlands), ASKAP (Australia), eMERLIN (UK), VLA (USA), e-EVN (based in Europe), LOFAR (The Netherlands), Meerkat (South Africa), and the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Each of these new instruments has different strengths, and coordination of surveys between them can help maximise the science from each of them. A radio continuum survey is being planned on each of them with the primary science objective of understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies over cosmic time, and the cosmological parameters and large-scale structures which drive it. In pursuit of this objective, the different teams are developing a variety of new techniques, and refining existing ones. Gravitational forces are expected to excite spiral density waves in protoplanetary disks, disks of gas and dust orbiting young stars. However, previous observations that showed spiral structure were not able to probe disk midplanes, where most of the mass is concentrated and where planet formation takes place. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array we detected a pair of trailing symmetric spiral arms in the protoplanetary disk surrounding the young star Elias 2-27. The arms extend to the disk outer regions and can be traced down to the midplane. These millimeter-wave observations also reveal an emission gap closer to the star than the spiral arms. To characterize the mechanisms of planet formation it is crucial to investigate the properties and evolution of protoplanetary disks around young stars, where the initial conditions for the growth of planets are set. Our goal is to study grain growth in the disk of the young, intermediate mass star HD163296 where dust processing has already been observed, and to look for evidence of growth by ice condensation across the CO snowline, already identified in this disk with ALMA. Under the hypothesis of optically thin emission we compare images at different wavelengths from ALMA and VLA to measure the opacity spectral index across the disk and thus the maximum grain size. We also use a Bayesian tool based on a two-layer disk model to fit the observations and constrain the dust surface density. The measurements of the opacity spectral index indicate the presence of large grains and pebbles ($\geq$1 cm) in the inner regions of the disk (inside $\sim$50 AU) and smaller grains, consistent with ISM sizes, in the outer disk (beyond 150 AU). Re-analysing ALMA Band 7 Science Verification data we find (radially) unresolved excess continuum emission centered near the location of the CO snowline at $\sim$90 AU. Our analysis suggests a grain size distribution consistent with an enhanced production of large grains at the CO snowline and consequent transport to the inner regions. Our results combined with the excess in infrared scattered light found by Garufi et al. (2014) suggests the presence of a structure at 90~AU involving the whole vertical extent of the disk. Theoretical models of grain growth predict dust properties to change as a function of protoplanetary disk radius, mass, age and other physical conditions. We lay down the methodology for a multi-wavelength analysis of (sub-)mm and cm continuum interferometric observations to constrain self-consistently the disk structure and the radial variation of the dust properties. The computational architecture is massively parallel and highly modular. The analysis is based on the simultaneous fit in the uv-plane of observations at several wavelengths with a model for the disk thermal emission and for the dust opacity. The observed flux density at the different wavelengths is fitted by posing constraints on the disk structure and on the radial variation of the grain size distribution. We apply the analysis to observations of three protoplanetary disks (AS 209, FT Tau, DR Tau) for which a combination of spatially resolved observations in the range ~0.88mm to ~10mm is available (from SMA, CARMA, and VLA), finding evidence of a decreasing maximum dust grain size (a_max) with radius. We derive large a_max values up to 1 cm in the inner disk between 15 and 30 AU and smaller grains with a_max~1 mm in the outer disk (R > 80AU). We present new results from the Disks@EVLA program for two young stars: CY Tau and DoAr 25. We trace continuum emission arising from their circusmtellar disks from spatially resolved observations, down to tens of AU scales, at {\lambda} = 0.9, 2.8, 8.0, and 9.8 mm for DoAr25 and at {\lambda} = 1.3, 2.8, and 7.1 mm for CY Tau. Additionally, we constrain the amount of emission whose origin is different from thermal dust emission from 5 cm observations. Directly from interferometric data, we find that observations at 7 mm and 1 cm trace emission from a compact disk while millimeter-wave observations trace an extended disk structure. From a physical disk model, where we characterize the disk structure of CY Tau and DoAr 25 at wavelengths shorter than 5 cm, we find that (1) dust continuum emission is optically thin at the observed wavelengths and over the spatial scales studied, (2) a constant value of the dust opacity is not warranted by our observations, and (3) a high-significance radial gradient of the dust opacity spectral index, {\beta}, is consistent with the observed dust emission in both disks, with low-{\beta} in the inner disk and high-{\beta} in the outer disk. Assuming that changes in dust properties arise solely due to changes in the maximum particle size (amax), we constrain radial variations of amax in both disks, from cm-sized particles in the inner disk (R < 40 AU) to millimeter sizes in the outer disk (R > 80 AU). These observational constraints agree with theoretical predictions of the radial-drift barrier, however, fragmentation of dust grains could explain our amax(R) constraints if these disks have lower turbulence and/or if dust can survive high-velocity collisions., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication at ApJ

This paper summarizes a search for radio-wavelength counterparts to candidate gravitational-wave events. The identification of an electromagnetic counterpart could provide a more complete understanding of a gravitational-wave event, including such characteristics as the location and the nature of the progenitor. We used the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) to search six galaxies which were identified as potential hosts for two candidate gravitational-wave events. We summarize our procedures and discuss preliminary results.

We present a description of the Prototype All-Sky Imager (PASI), a backend correlator and imager of the first station of the Long Wavelength Array (LWA1). PASI cross-correlates a live stream of 260 dual-polarization dipole antennas of the LWA1, creates all-sky images, and uploads them to the LWA-TV website in near real-time. PASI has recorded over 13,000 hours of all-sky images at frequencies between 10 and 88 MHz creating opportunities for new research and discoveries. We also report rate density and pulse energy density limits on transients at 38, 52, and 74 MHz, for pulse widths of 5 s. We limit transients at those frequencies with pulse energy densities of $>2.7\times 10^{-23}$, $>1.1\times 10^{-23}$, and $>2.8\times 10^{-23}$ J m$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$ to have rate densities $, 27 pages, 10 Figures, 1 Table
