Search

We present a novel technique called "photometric IGM tomography" to map the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $z\simeq4.9$ in the COSMOS field. It utilizes deep narrow-band (NB) imaging to photometrically detect faint Ly$\alpha$ forest transmission in background galaxies across the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC)'s $1.8\rm\,sq.\,deg$ field of view and locate Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) in the same cosmic volume. Using ultra-deep HSC images and Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting, we measure the Ly$\alpha$ forest transmission at $z\simeq4.9$ along a large number ($140$) of background galaxies selected from the DEIMOS10k spectroscopic catalogue at $4.98, Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures, accepted by MNRAS, full tables available as online supplementary material

The census of obscured quasar populations is incomplete, and remains a major unsolved problem, especially at higher redshifts, where we expect a greater density of galaxy formation and quasar activity. We present Gemini GNIRS near-infrared spectroscopy of 24 luminous obscured quasar candidates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Stripe 82 region. The targets were photometrically selected using a WISE/W4 selection technique that is optimized to identify IR-bright and heavily-reddened/optically-obscured targets at $z>1$. We detect emission lines of ${\rm H\alpha}$, ${\rm H\beta}$, and/or ${\rm[ O~III]}$ in 23 sources allowing us to measure spectroscopic redshifts in the range $1, Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

Fluctuations in Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest transmission towards high-$z$ quasars are partially sourced from spatial fluctuations in the ultraviolet background (UVB), the level of which are set by the mean free path of ionizing photons ($\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$). The auto-correlation function of Ly$\alpha$ forest flux characterizes the strength and scale of transmission fluctuations and, as we show, is thus sensitive to $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$. Recent measurements at $z \sim 6$ suggest a rapid evolution of $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ at $z>5.0$ which would leave a signature in the evolution of the auto-correlation function. For this forecast, we model mock Ly$\alpha$ forest data with properties similar to the XQR-30 extended data set at $5.4 \leq z \leq 6.0$. At each $z$ we investigate 100 mock data sets and an ideal case where mock data matches model values of the auto-correlation function. For ideal data with $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}=9.0$ cMpc at $z=6.0$, we recover $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}=12^{+6}_{-3}$ cMpc. This precision is comparable to direct measurements of $\lambda_{\text{mfp}}$ from the stacking of quasar spectra beyond the Lyman limit. Hypothetical high-resolution data leads to a $\sim40\%$ reduction in the error bars over all $z$. The distribution of mock values of the auto-correlation function in this work is highly non-Gaussian for high-$z$, which should caution work with other statistics of the high-$z$ Ly$\alpha$ forest against making this assumption. Bright, high-redshift (z > 6) QSOs are powerful probes of the ionization state of the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM). The detection of Ly α damping wing absorption imprinted in the spectrum of high-z QSOs can provide strong constraints on the epoch of reionization (EoR). In this work, we perform an independent Ly α damping wing analysis of two known z > 7 QSOs; DESJ0252−0503 at z= 7.00 (Wang etal.) and J1007+2115 at z= 7.51 (Yang etal.). For this, we utilize our existing Bayesian framework which simultaneously accounts for uncertainties in: (i) the intrinsic Ly α emission profile (reconstructed from a covariance matrix of measured emission lines; extended in this work to include N v) and (ii) the distribution of ionized (H ii) regions within the IGM using a 1.63 Gpc3 reionization simulation. This approach is complementary to that used in the aforementioned works as it focuses solely redward of Ly α (1218 < λ < 1230 Å) making it more robust to modelling uncertainties while also using a different methodology for (i) and (ii). We find, for an EoR morphology driven by galaxies within Mh ≳ 109 M⊙ haloes, x¯HI=0.64+0.19−0.23 (68per cent) at z= 7 and x¯HI=0.27+0.21−0.17 at z= 7.51 consistent within 1σ to the previous works above, though both are slightly lower in amplitude. Following the inclusion of N v into our reconstruction pipeline, we perform a reanalysis of ULASJ1120+0641 at z= 7.09 (Mortlock etal.) and ULASJ1342+0928 at z= 7.54 (Bañados etal.) finding x¯HI=0.44+0.23−0.24 at z= 7.09 and x¯HI=0.31+0.18−0.19 at z= 7.54. Finally, we combine the QSO damping wing constraints for all four z ≳ 7 QSOs to obtain a single, unified constraint of x¯HI=0.49+0.11−0.11 at z= 7.29.

We introduce a probabilistic approach to select 6 ≤ $z$ ≤ 8 quasar candidates for spectroscopic follow-up, which is based on density estimation in the high-dimensional space inhabited by the optical and near-infrared photometry. Densities are modelled as Gaussian mixtures with principled accounting of errors using the extreme deconvolution (XD) technique, generalizing an approach successfully used to select lower redshift ($z$ ≤ 3) quasars. We train the probability density of contaminants on 1902 071 7-d flux measurements from the 1076 deg2 overlapping area from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) ($z$), VIKING (YJHKs), and unWISE (W1W2) imaging surveys, after requiring they dropout of DECaLS g and r, whereas the distribution of high-$z$ quasars are trained on synthetic model photometry. Extensive simulations based on these density distributions and current estimates of the quasar luminosity function indicate that this method achieves a completeness of $\ge 56{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ and an efficiency of $\ge 5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ for selecting quasars at 6 < $z$ < 8 with JAB < 21.5. Among the classified sources are 8 known 6 < $z$ < 7 quasars, of which 2/8 are selected suggesting a completeness $\simeq 25{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, whereas classifying the 6 known (JAB < 21.5) quasars at $z$ > 7 from the entire sky, we select 5/6 or a completeness of $\simeq 80{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. The failure to select the majority of 6 < $z$ < 7 quasars arises because our quasar density model is based on an empirical quasar spectral energy distribution model that underestimates the scatter in the distribution of fluxes. This new approach to quasar selection paves the way for efficient spectroscopic follow-up of Euclid quasar candidates with ground-based telescopes and James Webb Space Telescope.

The presence of excess scatter in the Ly-$\alpha$ forest at $z\sim 5.5$, together with the existence of sporadic extended opaque Gunn-Peterson troughs, has started to provide robust evidence for a late end of hydrogen reionisation. However, low data quality and systematic uncertainties complicate the use of Ly-$\alpha$ transmission as a precision probe of reionisation's end stages. In this paper, we assemble a sample of 67 quasar sightlines at $z>5.5$ with high signal-to-noise ratios of $>10$ per $\leq 15$ km s$^{-1}$ spectral pixel, relying largely on the new XQR-30 quasar sample. XQR-30 is a large program on VLT/X-Shooter which obtained deep (SNR $>20$ per pixel) spectra of 30 quasars at $z>5.7$. We carefully account for systematics in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly-$\alpha$ systems. We present improved measurements of the mean Ly-$\alpha$ transmission over $4.93.5 \sigma$). Our results indicate that reionisation-related fluctuations, whether in the UVB, residual neutral hydrogen fraction, and/or IGM temperature, persist in the intergalactic medium until at least $z=5.3$ ($t=1.1$ Gyr after the Big Bang). We present a new approach to measure the power-law temperature density relationship $T=T_0 (\rho / \bar{\rho})^{\gamma -1}$ and the UV background photoionization rate $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ of the IGM based on the Voigt profile decomposition of the Ly$\alpha$ forest into a set of discrete absorption lines with Doppler parameter $b$ and the neutral hydrogen column density $N_{\rm HI}$. Previous work demonstrated that the shape of the $b$-$N_{\rm HI}$ distribution is sensitive to the IGM thermal parameters $T_0$ and $\gamma$, whereas our new inference algorithm also takes into account the normalization of the distribution, i.e. the line-density d$N$/d$z$, and we demonstrate that precise constraints can also be obtained on $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$. We use density-estimation likelihood-free inference (DELFI) to emulate the dependence of the $b$-$N_{\rm HI}$ distribution on IGM parameters trained on an ensemble of 624 Nyx hydrodynamical simulations at $z = 0.1$, which we combine with a Gaussian process emulator of the normalization. To demonstrate the efficacy of this approach, we generate hundreds of realizations of realistic mock HST/COS datasets, each comprising 34 quasar sightlines, and forward model the noise and resolution to match the real data. We use this large ensemble of mocks to extensively test our inference and empirically demonstrate that our posterior distributions are robust. Our analysis shows that by applying our new approach to existing Ly$\alpha$ forest spectra at $z\simeq 0.1$, one can measure the thermal and ionization state of the IGM with very high precision ($\sigma_{\log T_0} \sim 0.08$ dex, $\sigma_\gamma \sim 0.06$, and $\sigma_{\log \Gamma_{\rm HI}} \sim 0.07$ dex)., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) survey of CO(4--3) line emitting galaxies in 17 quasar fields at $z\sim4$ aimed to perform the first systematic search of dusty galaxies in high$-z$ quasar environments. Our blind search of galaxies around the quasars results in 5 CO emitters with S/N$\geq5.6$ within a projected radius of $R\lesssim1.5\,h^{-1}\,$cMpc and a velocity range of $\rm\Delta\,v=\pm1000\,$km\,s$^{-1}$ around the quasar. In blank fields, we expect to detect only 0.28 CO emitters within the same volume, implying a total overdensity of $17.6^{+11.9}_{-7.6}$ in our fields, and indicating that quasars trace massive structures in the early universe. We quantify this overdensity by measuring the small-scale clustering of CO emitters around quasars, resulting in a cross-correlation length of $r_{\rm 0,QG}=8.37^{+2.42}_{-2.04}\,h^{-1}\,$cMpc, assuming a fixed slope $\gamma=1.8$. This contradicts the reported mild overdensities (x1.4) of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) in the same fields at scales of $R\lesssim7\,h^{-1}\,$cMpc which is well described by a cross-correlation length 3 times lower than that measured for CO emitters. We discuss some possibilities to explain this discrepancy, including low star formation efficiency, and excess of dust in galaxies around quasars. Finally, we constrain, for the first time, the clustering of CO emitters at $z\sim4$, finding an auto-correlation length of $r_{\rm 0,CO}=3.14\pm1.71\,h^{-1}\,$cMpc (with $\gamma=1.8$). Our work together with the previous study of LAEs around quasars traces simultaneously the clustering properties of both optical and dusty galaxy populations in quasars fields, stressing the importance of multi-wavelength studies, and highlighting important questions about galaxy properties in high$-z$ dense environments., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the ApJ

The thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) contains vital information about the epoch of reionization, one of the most transformative yet poorly understood periods in the young universe. This thermal state is encoded in the small-scale structure of Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) absorption in quasar spectra. The 1D flux power spectrum measures the average small-scale structure along quasar sightlines. At high redshifts, where the opacity is large, averaging mixes high signal-to-noise ratio transmission spikes with noisy absorption troughs. Wavelet amplitudes are an alternate statistic that maintains spatial information while quantifying fluctuations at the same spatial frequencies as the power spectrum, giving them the potential to more sensitively measure the small-scale structure. Previous Ly$\alpha$ forest studies using wavelet amplitude probability density functions (PDFs) used limited spatial frequencies and neglected strong correlations between PDF bins and across wavelets scales, resulting in sub-optimal and unreliable parameter inference. Here we present a novel method for performing statistical inference using wavelet amplitude PDFs that spans the full range of spatial frequencies probed by the power spectrum and that fully accounts for these correlations. We applied this procedure to realistic mock data drawn from a simple thermal model parameterized by the temperature at mean density, $T_0$, and find that wavelets deliver 1$\sigma$ constraints on $T_0$ that are on average 7% more sensitive at $z=5$ (12% at $z=6$) than those from the power spectrum. The physical and chemical properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z\gtrsim6$ have been studied successfully through the absorption in the spectra of background Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs). One of the most crucial questions is to investigate the nature and location of the source galaxies that give rise to these early metal absorbers. Theoretical models suggest that momentum-driven outflows from typical star-forming galaxies can eject metals into the CGM and the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z=5-6. Deep, dedicated surveys have searched for Ly$\alpha$ emission associated with strong CIV absorbers at $z\approx 6$, but only a few Ly$\alpha$ emitter candidates have been detected. Interpreting these detections is moreover ambiguous because Ly$\alpha$ is a resonant line, raising the need for complementary techniques for detecting absorbers' host galaxies. Here, using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we report a [C II] 158$\mu$m emitter associated with a strong low-ionization absorber, OI, at $z=5.978$. The projected impact parameter between OI and [C II] emitter is 20.0 kpc. The measured [C II] luminosity is $7.0\times 10^7$ solar luminosities. We present the second data release of the COSMOS Lyα Mapping And Tomography Observations Survey conducted with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the Keck I telescope. This project used Lyα forest absorption in the spectra of faint star-forming galaxies and quasars at z ∼ 2–3 to trace neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. In particular, we use 320 objects over a footprint of ∼0.2 deg2 to reconstruct the absorption field at 2.05 < z < 2.55 at ∼2 h −1 Mpc resolution. We apply a Wiener filtering technique to the observed data to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) maps of the field over a volume of 4.1 × 105 h −3 Mpc3. In addition to the filtered flux maps, for the first time we infer the underlying dark matter field through a forward-modeling framework from a joint likelihood of galaxy and Lyα forest data, finding clear examples of the detailed cosmic web consisting of cosmic voids, sheets, filaments, and nodes. In addition to traditional figures, we present a number of interactive 3D models to allow exploration of the data and qualitative comparisons to known galaxy surveys. We find that our inferred overdensities are consistent with those found from galaxy fields. We will make all our reduced spectra, extracted Lyα forest pixel data, and reconstructed tomographic maps publicly available upon publication.

We present new measurements of the flux power-spectrum P(k) of the z < 0.5 H i Lyman-α Forest spanning scales $k \sim 0.001\!-\!0.1\, \mathrm{s \, km}^{-1}$. These results were derived from 65 far-ultraviolet quasar spectra (resolution $R \sim 18\, 000$) observed with the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The analysis required careful masking of all contaminating, coincident absorption from H i and metal–line transitions of the Galactic interstellar medium and intervening absorbers as well as proper treatment of the complex COS line-spread function. From the P(k) measurements, we estimate the H i photoionization rate ($\Gamma _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$) in the z < 0.5 intergalactic medium. Our results confirm most of the previous $\Gamma _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$ estimates. We conclude that previous concerns of a photon underproduction crisis are now resolved by demonstrating that the measured $\Gamma _{\rm H\,{\small I}}$ can be accounted for by ultraviolet emission from quasars alone. In a companion paper, we will present constraints on the thermal state of the z < 0.5 intergalactic medium from the P(k) measurements presented here.

The duration of quasar accretion episodes is a key quantity for distinguishing between models for the formation and growth of supermassive black holes, the evolution of quasars, and their potential feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, this critical timescale, often referred to as the quasar lifetime, is still uncertain by orders of magnitude ($t_{\rm Q} \simeq 0.01\,{\rm Myr} - 1\,{\rm Gyr}$). Absorption spectra of quasars exhibiting transmission in the He II Ly$\alpha$ forest provide a unique opportunity to make precise measurements of the quasar lifetime. Indeed, the size of a quasar's He II proximity zone, the region near the quasar itself where its own radiation dramatically alters the ionization state of the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM), depends sensitively on its lifetime for $t_{\rm Q}\lesssim 30$ Myr, comparable to the expected $e$-folding time-scale for SMBH growth $t_{\rm S}=45$ Myr. In this study we compare the sizes of He II proximity zones in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra of 6 z~4 quasars to theoretical models generated by post-processing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with $1$D radiative transfer algorithm. We introduce a Bayesian statistical method to infer the lifetimes of individual quasars which allows us to fully marginalize over the unknown ionization state of the surrounding IGM. We measure lifetimes $0.63^{+0.82}_{-0.40}$ Myr and $5.75^{+4.72}_{-2.74}$ Myr for two objects. For the other 4 quasars large redshift uncertainties undermine our sensitivity allowing us to only place upper or lower limits. However a joint analysis of these four systems yields a measurement of their average lifetime of $\langle t_{\rm Q}\rangle = 1.17^{+1.77}_{-0.84}$ Myr. We discuss our short ~1 Myr inferred lifetimes in the context of other quasar lifetime constraints and the growth of SMBHs.

X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using infrared and sub-millimeter observations. Correlation analysis indicates that the X-ray bolometric correction (the factor that converts from X-ray luminosity to bolometric luminosity) decreases with increasing $L_{\rm bol}$, and that the UV/optical-to-X-ray ratio, $\alpha_{\rm ox}$, strongly correlates with $L_{\rm 2500}$, and moderately correlates with $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ and blueshift of CIV emission lines. These correlations are consistent with those found in lower-$z$ quasars, indicating quasar accretion physics does not evolve with redshift. We also find that $L_{\rm IR}$ does not correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ in these luminous distant quasars, suggesting that the ratio of the SMBH growth rate and their host galaxy growth rate in these early luminous quasars are different from those of local galaxies. A joint spectral analysis of the X-ray detected $z>6.5$ quasars yields an average X-ray photon index of $ \Gamma=2.32^{+0.31}_{-0.30}$, steeper than that of low-$z$ quasars. By comparing it with the $\Gamma-\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ relation, we conclude that the steepening of $\Gamma$ for quasars at $z>6.5$ is mainly driven by their higher Eddington ratios., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington accretion since $z=30$. The Eddington ratio distribution peaks at $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\sim0.8$ and has a mean of 1.08, suggesting high accretion rates for these quasars. The CIV - MgII emission line velocity differences in our sample show an increase of CIV blueshift towards higher redshift, but the evolutionary trend observed from this sample is weaker than the previous results from smaller samples at similar redshift. The FeII/MgII flux ratios derived for these quasars up to $z=7.6$, compared with previous measurements at different redshifts, do not show any evidence of strong redshift evolution, suggesting metal-enriched environments in these quasars. Using this quasar sample, we create a quasar composite spectrum for $z>6.5$ quasars and find no significant redshift evolution of quasar broad emission lines and continuum slope, except for a blueshift of the CIV line. Our sample yields a strong broad absorption line quasar fraction of $\sim$24%, higher than the fractions in lower redshift quasar samples, although this could be affected by small sample statistics and selection effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 26 pages, 9 figures

Constraints on the time-scales of quasar activity are key to understanding the formation and growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), quasar triggering mechanisms, and possible feedback effects on their host galaxies. However, observational estimates of this so-called quasar lifetime are highly uncertain (t_Q~10^4-10^9 yr), because most methods are indirect and involve many model-dependent assumptions. Direct evidence of earlier activity is gained from the higher ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the quasar environs, observable as enhanced Ly$\alpha$ transmission in the so-called proximity zone. Due to the ~30 Myr equilibration time-scale of HeII in the z~3 IGM, the size of the HeII proximity zone depends on the time the quasar had been active before our observation t_on30 Myr that does not depend on quasar luminosity, black hole mass, or Eddington ratio. These results point to episodic quasar activity over a long duty cycle, but do not rule out substantial SMBH growth during phases of radiative inefficiency or obscuration., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The systematic targeting of extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around high-redshift quasars resulted in the discovery of rare and bright Enormous Ly$\alpha$ Nebulae (ELANe) associated with multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN). We here initiate "a multiwavelength study of ELAN environments" (AMUSE$^2$) focusing on the ELAN around the $z\sim3$ quasar SDSS J1040+1020, a.k.a. the Fabulous ELAN. We report on VLT/HAWK-I, APEX/LABOCA, JCMT/SCUBA-2, SMA/850$\mu$m, ALMA/CO(5-4) and 2mm observations and compare them to previously published VLT/MUSE data. The continuum and line detections enable a first estimate of the star-formation rates, dust, stellar and molecular gas masses in four objects associated with the ELAN (three AGNs and one Ly$\alpha$ emitter), confirming that the quasar host is the most star-forming (${\rm SFR}\sim500$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) and massive galaxy ($M_{\rm star}\sim10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) in the system, and thus can be assumed as central. All four embedded objects have similar molecular gas reservoirs ($M_{\rm H_2}\sim10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$), resulting in short depletion time scales. This fact together with the estimated total dark-matter halo mass, $M_{\rm DM}=(0.8-2)\times10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, implies that this ELAN will evolve into a giant elliptical galaxy. Consistently, the constraint on the baryonic mass budget for the whole system indicates that the majority of baryons should reside in a massive warm-hot reservoir (up to $10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$), needed to complete the baryons count. Radio sources at the highest redshifts can provide unique information on the first massive galaxies and black holes, the densest primordial environments, and the epoch of reionization. The number of astronomical objects identified at z>6 has increased dramatically over the last few years, but previously only three radio-loud (R2500>10) sources had been reported at z>6, with the most distant being a quasar at z=6.18. Here we present the discovery and characterization of P172+18, a radio-loud quasar at z=6.823. This source has an MgII-based black hole mass of ~3x10^8 Msun and is one of the fastest accreting quasars, consistent with super-Eddington accretion. The ionized region around the quasar is among the largest measured at these redshifts, implying an active phase longer than the average lifetime of the z>6 quasar population. From archival data, there is evidence that its 1.4 GHz emission has decreased by a factor of two over the last two decades. The quasar's radio spectrum between 1.4 and 3.0 GHz is steep (alpha=-1.31) and has a radio-loudness parameter R2500~90. A second steep radio source (alpha=-0.83) of comparable brightness to the quasar is only 23.1" away (~120 kpc at z=6.82; projection probability, submitted to ApJ on Nov 29, 2020; accepted on Jan 31, 2021. The lifetime of quasars can be estimated by means of their proximity zone sizes, which are regions of enhanced flux bluewards of the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission line observed in the rest-frame UV spectra of high-redshift quasars, because the intergalactic gas has a finite response time to the quasars' radiation. We estimate the effective lifetime of the high-redshift quasar population from the composite transmitted flux profile within the proximity zone region of a sample of $15$ quasars at $5.8\leq z\leq 6.6$ with precise systemic redshifts, and similar luminosities, i.e. $-27.6\leq M_{1450}\leq-26.4$, and thus a similar instantaneous ionizing power. We develop a Bayesian method to infer the effective lifetime from the composite spectrum, including robust estimates of various sources of uncertainty on the spectrum. We estimate an effective lifetime of the quasar population as a whole of $\log_{10}(t_{Q}/{yr}) = 5.7^{+0.5 (+0.8)}_{-0.3 (-0.5)}$ given by the median and $68$th ($95$th) percentile of the posterior probability distribution. While our result is consistent with previous quasar lifetime studies, it poses significant challenges on the current model for the growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) located in the center of the quasars' host galaxies, which requires that quasar lifetimes are more than an order of magnitude longer., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

Enormous Lyα nebulae, extending over 300−500 kpc around quasars, represent the pinnacle of galaxy and cluster formation. Here we present IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations of the enormous Lyα nebulae “Slug” (z = 2.282) and “Jackpot” (z = 2.041). Our data reveal bright, synchrotron emission associated with the two radio-loud active galactic nuclei embedded in the targeted nebulae as well as molecular gas, as traced via the CO(3−2) line, in three galaxies (two sources in Slug, and one in Jackpot). All of the CO emission is associated with galaxies detected in their rest-frame UV stellar emission. The total mass in molecular gas of these three galaxies [∼(3 − 5) × 1010 M⊙] is comparable with the total ionized gas mass responsible for the diffuse nebular emission. Our observations place limits on the molecular gas emission in the nebulae: the molecular gas surface density is ΣH2 < 12 − 25 M⊙ pc−2 for the Slug nebula and ΣH2 < 34 − 68 M⊙ pc−2 for the Jackpot nebula. These are consistent with the expected molecular gas surface densities, as predicted via photoionization models of the rest-frame UV line emission in the nebulae, and via Lyα absorption in the Jackpot nebula. Compared to other radio-loud quasars at z > 1 and high-redshift radio-loud galaxies, we do not find any strong trends relating the molecular gas reservoirs, the radio power, and the Lyα luminosities of these systems. The significant step in sensitivity required to achieve a detection of the molecular gas from the nebulae, if present, will require a substantial time investment with JVLA, NOEMA, or ALMA.

Understanding the growth of the supermassive black holes powering luminous quasars, their co-evolution with host galaxies, and impact on the surrounding intergalactic medium depends sensitively on the duration of quasar accretion episodes. Unfortunately, this time-scale, known as the quasar lifetime, $t_{\rm Q}$, is still uncertain by orders of magnitude ($t_{\rm Q}\simeq 0.01~{\rm Myr}-1~{\rm Gyr}$). However, the extent of the He II Ly$\alpha$ proximity zones in the absorption spectra of $z_{\rm qso}\sim3-4$ quasars constitutes a unique probe, providing sensitivity to lifetimes up to $\sim 30$ Myr. Our recent analysis of $22$ archival He II proximity zone spectra reveals a surprisingly broad range of emission timescales, indicating that some quasars turned on $\lesssim 1$ Myr ago, whereas others have been shining for $\gtrsim 30$ Myr. Determining the underlying quasar lifetime distribution (QLD) from proximity zone measurements is a challenging task owing to: 1) the limited sensitivity of individual measurements; 2) random sampling of the quasar light curves; 3) density fluctuations in the quasar environment; and 4) the inhomogeneous ionization state of He II in a reionizing IGM. We combine a semi-numerical He II reionization model, hydrodynamical simulations post-processed with ionizing radiative transfer, and a novel statistical framework to infer the QLD from an ensemble of proximity zone measurements. Assuming a log-normal QLD, we infer a mean $\langle {\rm log}_{10}\left(t_{\rm Q}/{\rm Myr}\right)\rangle=0.22^{+0.22}_{-0.25}$ and standard deviation $\sigma_{{\rm log}_{10}t_{\rm Q}}=0.80^{+0.37}_{-0.27}$. Our results allow us to estimate the probability of detecting young quasars with $t_{\rm Q}\leq0.1$ Myr from their proximity zone sizes yielding $p\left(\leq 0.1~{\rm Myr}\right)=0.19^{+0.11}_{-0.09}$, which is broadly consistent with recent determination at $z\sim 6$., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Due to an error in the analysis of the ALMA data, the [C II] line fluxes Fline in 6 out of the 13 analyzed quasars were underestimated, and thus also based the inferred star formation rate (SFR) on the [C II] emission. We corrected these values and show the updated measurements for the six affected quasars in the corrected Table 2. The dust continuum estimates and their derived quantities were not affected by the error. Additionally, the observed peak frequency of the [C II] emission line nobs and thus the inferred systemic redshifts of the quasars were mildly offset, causing a shift of Dnobs ? 0.02 GHz and - Dzsub mm ? 0.0005. The derived proximity zone sizes were hence affected byDRp ? 0.04 pMpc. All updated values are shown in the corrected Tables 2 and 4. These changes did not affect any of the conclusions of the paper, nor did the figures in the paper change in any noticeable way. Furthermore, since the publication of our paper the offset between the peak of the Mg II emission line and the systemic redshift derived from submillimeter emission lines estimated by Schindler et al. (2020) changed slightly in their published version compared to the preliminary value we had used. Thus we use the now published velocity offset of Dv(Mg II-[C II]) = - - 391+ km s- 455 256 1 to estimate the systemic redshifts of the three quasars in our sample, for which no submillimeter data are available and therefore the redshift estimate is based on the Mg II emission. This resulted in minor changes of Dz ? 0.001, which are updated in Table 4.

Bright, high redshift ($z>6$) QSOs are powerful probes of the ionisation state of the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM). The detection of Ly$\alpha$ damping wing absorption imprinted in the spectrum of high-z QSOs can provide strong constraints on the epoch of reionisation (EoR). In this work, we perform an independent Ly$\alpha$ damping wing analysis of two known $z>7$ QSOs; DESJ0252-0503 at $z=7.00$ (Wang et al.) and J1007+2115 at $z=7.51$ (Yang et al.). For this, we utilise our existing Bayesian framework which simultaneously accounts for uncertainties in: (i) the intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ emission profile (reconstructed from a covariance matrix of measured emission lines; extended in this work to include NV) and (ii) the distribution of ionised (H\,{\scriptsize II}) regions within the IGM using a $1.6^3$ Gpc$^3$ reionisation simulation. This approach is complementary to that used in the aforementioned works as it focuses solely redward of Ly$\alpha$ ($1218 < \lambda < 1230$\AA) making it more robust to modelling uncertainties while also using a different methodology for (i) and (ii). We find, for a fiducial EoR morphology, $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.64\substack{+0.19 \\ -0.23}$ (68 per cent) at $z=7$ and $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.27\substack{+0.21 \\ -0.17}$ at $z=7.51$ consistent within $1\sigma$ to the previous works above, though both are slightly lower in amplitude. Following the inclusion of NV into our reconstruction pipeline, we perform a reanalysis of ULASJ1120+0641 at $z=7.09$ (Mortlock et al.) and ULASJ1342+0928 at $z=7.54$ (Ba\~nados et al.) finding $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.44\substack{+0.23 \\ -0.24}$ at $z=7.09$ and $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.31\substack{+0.18 \\ -0.19}$ at $z=7.54$. Finally, we combine the QSO damping wing constraints for all four $z\gtrsim7$ QSOs to obtain a single, unified constraint of $\bar{x}_{\rm HI} = 0.49\substack{+0.11 \\ -0.11}$ at $z=7.29$., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. The physical and chemical properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at z ≳ 6 have been studied successfully through the absorption in the spectra of background Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) 1–3. One of the most crucial questions is to investigate the nature and location of the source galaxies that give rise to these early metal absorbers4–6. Theoretical models suggest that momentum-driven outflows from typical star-forming galaxies can eject metals into the CGM and the intergalactic medium (IGM), with the projected separation between absorbers and galaxies expected to range from 5 to 50 proper kpc at z=5–6 7–10. Deep, dedicated surveys have searched for Lyα emission associated with strong CIV absorbers at z ≈ 6, but only a few Lyα emitter candidates have been detected. Interpreting these detections is moreover ambiguous because Lyα is a resonant line11–13, raising the need for complementary techniques for detecting absorbers’ host galaxies. Here, using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we report, for the first time, the [C II] 158µm emission and the far-infrared dust continuum associated with a strong low-ionization absorber, O I, at z = 5.978. The [C II] luminosity is 73 million solar luminosities, corresponding to a dark matter halo mass of 100 billion solar masses. This is one to two orders of magnitude more massive than typical values predicted from cosmological simulations9, 16.

We present statistics of HeII Lya transmission spikes and large-scale absorption troughs using archival high-resolution ($R=\lambda /\Delta \lambda \simeq 12,500$-$18,000$) far-UV spectra of eight HeII-transparent quasars obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The sample covers the redshift range 2.5100cMpc at z>3 to L~30cMpc at z~2.7, signaling a significant progression of HeII reionization at these redshifts. Furthermore, unexpectedly long L~65cMpc troughs detected at z~2.9 suggest that the UV background fluctuates at larger scales than predicted by current models. By comparing the measured incidence of transmission spikes to predictions from forward-modeled mock spectra created from the outputs of a (146cMpc)^3 optically thin Nyx hydrodynamical simulation employing different UV background models, we infer the redshift evolution of the HeII photoionization rate $\Gamma_\mathrm{He\,II}(z)$. The photoionization rate decreases with increasing redshift from $\simeq 4.6\times 10^{-15}\mathrm{\,s^{-1}}$ at z~2.6 to $\simeq 1.2 \times 10^{-15}\mathrm{\,s^{-1}}$ at z~3.2, in agreement with previous inferences from the HeII effective optical depth, and following expected trends of current models of a fluctuating HeII-ionizing background., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ following minor revision (added 2 new figures); 16 pages, 14 figures
