Background: Bone anchored earing devices have developed over the years and today more than 250 000 persons in the world benefit from these devices. A review of the development will be given. Recent studies show a greater impact on hearing, learning and in social life than earlier recognized when suffering from single sided ear canal atresia especially during development. Persons with single sided conductive hearing loss have earlier not been habilitated. Objective: Central hearing pathways in humans and in an animal model with single sided conductive hearing loss due to ear canal closure has been studied. Material and Methods: Children and adults with single sided conductive loss due to ear canal atresia have been tested using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Diffusion Weighted Imaging. An experimental model has been established in Sprague Dawley rats where one ear canal was sutured and closed at birth to mirror the human congenital malformation of ear canal atresia. MRI testing were performed at 1,3,6 and 12 months of age. Results: White tissue in the human brain is statistically shown to be thinner on the affected side. Software developed for human data could be transformed and used on images of rats. The developed method handles formatting issues, artefact corrections, diffusion metrics calculations and statistical group comparisons of magnetic resonance diffusion weighted images. Three month old rat brains have been investigated and found to have special patterns and connection between the central hearing nuclei. Conclusion: Investigation with MRI has made it possible to map regions of interest in humans and to find connectivity between different hearing nuclei in the brain in a rat model with single sided ear canal closure. Antibiotics are critical components of modern health care. Protecting their efficacy through managing the rise in antibiotic resistance is therefore a global concern. It is not known to what extent environmental pollution from antibiotics contributes to the development of resistance, but encountered concentrations are frequently above concentrations predicted to select for resistance. Hence, measures are needed to manage risks. Here, we analyse if the indirect health risks from antibiotics in the aquatic environment can be considered in the context of the EU Water Framework Directive and the setting of environmental quality standards (EQS). By scrutinising current legislation, we conclude that it is possible to take the indirect health risks from antimicrobial resistance into account when deriving EQS for substances with antibiotic activity. We base this on the following conclusions: (1) human health concerns can be the main driver when setting an EQS, (2) an EQS can be based on data not specified in the guidance document, and (3) there are no restrictions against establishing EQS using data on antimicrobial resistance properties. In addition, since antimicrobial resistance travel across borders, we see strong reasons to prioritise setting these EQS on the EU level over the national level. Even though there is no agreed-upon method for how to develop EQS protective against resistance selection, there are several suggestions available in the literature and a couple of examples of regulatory initiatives. Also, addressing antimicrobial resistance through the Water Framework Directive can act as a driving force for other applicable legislation where such risks are not considered. Every application of a substance results from the macroscopic property of the substance that is related to the substance's microscopic structure. For example, the forged park gate in your city was produced thanks to the malleability and ductility of metals, which are related to the ability of shifting of layers of metal cations, while fire extinguishing powders use the high boiling point of compounds related to their regular ionic and covalent structures. This also applies to polymers. The purpose of this review is to summarise and present information on selected food-related biopolymers, with special attention on their respective structures, related properties, and resultant applications. Moreover, this paper also highlights how the treatment method used affects the structure, properties, and, hence, applications of some polysaccharides. Despite a strong focus on food-related biopolymers, this review is addressed to a broad community of both material engineers and food researchers.

Objectives: To evaluate the intra- and inter-rater agreement for myometrial lesions using Morphologic Uterus Sonographic Assessment terminology., Methods: Thirteen raters with high (n = 6) or medium experience (n = 7) assessed 30 3-dimensional ultrasound clips with (n = 20) and without (n = 10) benign myometrial lesions. Myometrial lesions were reported as poorly or well defined and then systematically evaluated for the presence of individual features. The clips were blindly assessed twice (at a 2-month interval). Intra- and inter-rater agreements were calculated with κ statistics., Results: The reporting of poorly defined lesions reached moderate intra-rater agreement (κ = 0.49 [high experience] and 0.47 [medium experience]) and poor inter-rater agreement (κ = 0.39 [high experience] and 0.25 [medium experience]). The reporting of well-defined lesions reached good to very good intra-rater agreement (κ = 0.73 [high experience] and 0.82 [medium experience]) and good inter-rater agreement (κ = 0.75 [high experience] and 0.63 [medium experience]). Most individual features associated with ill-defined lesions reached moderate intra- and inter-rater agreement among highly experienced raters (κ = 0.41-0.60). The least reproducible features were myometrial cysts, hyperechoic islands, subendometrial lines and buds, and translesional flow (κ = 0.11-0.34). Most individual features associated with well-defined lesions reached moderate to good intra- and inter-rater agreement among all observers (κ = 0.41-0.80). The least reproducible features were a serosal contour, asymmetry, a hyperechoic rim, and fan-shaped shadows (κ = 0.00-0.35)., Conclusions: The reporting of well-defined lesions showed excellent agreement, whereas the agreement for poorly defined lesions was low, even among highly experienced raters. The agreement on identifying individual features varied, especially for features associated with ill-defined lesions.
