ABSTRACT The use of cold plasma is effective in overcoming seed dormancy. However, its effects, both in the long-term and during storage, is still not fully understood. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the immediate and post-storage effect of atmospheric plasma on the seeds of Pityrocarpa moniliformis in overcoming seed coat dormancy. The seeds were treated with plasma for 0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 minutes. Following application, 50% of the seeds were stored for two years while the remainder were submitted to immediate analysis. The seeds were evaluated for germination and the germination speed index, in addition to seedling length and dry weight. The experimental design was completely randomised, and included regression analysis. The plasma treatment resulted in an increase in the germination rate and vigour of the seeds, both immediately after exposure and after two years of storage. In particular, the seeds treated for five minutes showed around 39% germination, which was outstanding compared to seeds from other exposure times. Plasma is effective in overcoming seed coat dormancy in seeds of P. moniliformis treated for five minutes and tested immediately. The effect of plasma on the seeds of P. moniliformis after storage was less for all the conditions under test.

Abstract: Atmospheric plasma application technology consists of a fast and practical method, which has the potential to modify the surface of seeds with integumentary hardness. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of applying atmospheric cold plasma on Pityrocarpa moniliformis seeds, assessing its implications on the seed coat impermeability, germination and vigor. Cells were subjected to plasma for 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 minutes, using seeds without any treatment as a control. After application, the seed coat wettability, imbibition curve and electrical conductivity of the soaking solution were determined. Seeds were also subjected to the germination test, and its results were used to determine viability, median, uniformity and asymmetry of germination. Seeds subjected to plasma for 5.0 and 4.0 minutes showed the lowest apparent contact angles, 64 and 61°, respectively, characterizing greater wettability of the seed coat among the treatments tested. Higher germination was observed in the treatments with plasma application when compared to the control. Atmospheric plasma application technology has the potential to be used as an accelerator of P. moniliformis seed germination.

Phaseolus lunatus L. is a species of landrace bean widely cultivated in Northeast Brazil. The integration of new technologies in the agricultural sector has highlighted the significance of seed images analysis as a valuable asset in the characterization process. The objective was to assess the morphology of 18 P. lunatus varieties gathered from four states in the Brazilian Northeast. To achieve this, 100 seeds from each variety were utilized, and their images were acquired using a flatbed scanner with a digital resolution of 400 dpi. Subsequently, the images were processed using the ImageJ software package for analyzing seed size, shape and color characteristics. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS software applying stepwise Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). The overall accuracy rate for correct identification was 80.5%. Among the varieties, the lowest classification percentage was attributed to the ‘Coquinho Vermelha’ variety (39%), while the highest rates were observed for ‘Fava Roxa’ and ‘Fava de Moita’ (98%). The morpho-colorimetric classification system successfully discriminated the varieties of P. lunatus produced in the northeastern region of Brazil, highlighting the -+*/high degree of diversity within them. In particular, seeds with uniform coloring or clearly defined secondary color patterns were easier to classify. The varieties showed low correlation, forming distinct groups based on background color, secondary color, or seed size.

ABSTRACT Establishing the appropriate procedures for conducting germination tests in forest species is important for marketing the seeds, especially species that are not yet included in the relevant Normative Instructions. The aim of this study was to determine the ideal conditions of temperature and substrate to carry out the germination test on seeds of Senna siamea, as well as: (i) to characterise the morpho-physiology of seedling establishment, (ii) the period for seedling evaluation, and (iii) validate the efficiency of the methodology in 10 batches of seeds. The experimental design was completely randomised in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme (temperatures x substrates), with 12 replications of 50 seeds in each treatment. To evaluate the different batches, the data were submitted to analysis of variance, and the mean values compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The percentage and speed of germination, first count, seedling length, accumulated germination, and seedling morphology were evaluated. The germination potential of S. siamea seeds is greater on paper-roll substrate at temperatures of 25 °C and 30 °C (86% and 87%). The first germination count and final seedling evaluation should be carried out 15 and 21 days after sowing, respectively. The species has epigeal germination and the seedlings are phanerocotyledonous. It was found that the method for carrying out and evaluating the germination test recommended in this study is suitable for evaluating batches of S. siamea seeds.
