The genus Albatrellus is an important group of stipitate terrestrial fungi in the order Russulales. Some species in the genus form ectomycorrhizae, mostly with trees of Pinaceae; some are well-known edible mushrooms. However, its diversity and biogeography are unclear. Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies on Albatrellus were carried out by morphological examination, which included detailed observations of the fruiting body, spore shape and size, and other key features, together with potential hosts. These observations were then compared and analysed using multi-locus molecular phylogenetic analyses, including the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS), the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (tef1), the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb1), the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (rpb2), the small subunit mitochondrial rRNA gene (mtSSU), and the small subunit of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nucSSU). The results demonstrated that the species of Albatrellus formed eight clades. Nine new species are described and illustrated, and two new combinations are proposed. A total of 38 species are accepted in Albatrellus worldwide. Of those species, 26, 7, and 8 species are distributed in Asia, Europe, and North America, respectively. The divergence time indicated that the maximum crown age of Albatrellus was approximately 70.5 million years ago, and East Asia and North America are the likely ancestral areas. Dispersal and differentiation to other continents occurred during the late Paleocene and Miocene. Three kinds of dispersal routes are proposed: East Asia and Europe, East Asia and North America, and Europe and North America.

Two taxonomically controversial polypore genera with reddish brown to orange basidiomata that stain reddish with KOH solution, Aurantiporus and Hapalopilus, are revised based on additional sampling, morphological examination, and phylogenetic analysis of a combined dataset of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-nLSU sequences. Hapalopilus is a monophyletic genus belonging to Phanerochaetaceae, whereas Aurantiporus is a polyphyletic genus belonging to Meruliaceae. Hapalopilus and Aurantiporus s. str. are circumscribed, and two new species – Aurantiporus orientalis and Hapalopilus tabuliformis – are described and illustrated from temperate China. In addition, four new combinations, viz. Aurantiporus alboaurantius, A. mutans, A. tropicus and Luteoporia albocitrina, are proposed based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis. The relationships between Aurantiporus and Hapalopilus are discussed.

Specimens of poroid Hymenochaetaceae with uniquely strigose pileus surfaces were collected and studied morphologically and phylogenetically (using as markers ITS and nrLSU ribosomal DNA). Detailed morphological examination showed that the specimens belong to two distinct species of Fuscoporia . Fuscoporia sarcites comb. nov., which is proposed and recorded for the first time in Guatemala, Honduras, and Venezuela, and the newly described Fuscoporia dollingeri sp. nov., which was collected several times in Florida (USA). Morphological and ecological data of these species are compared to other similar species, and an identification key of Neotropical Fuscoporia is provided.

Haploporus species have a worldwide distribution and 27 species have been accepted. In this study, two new species, Haploporus crystallinus and H. dextrinoideus, are proposed from South America, based on the molecular fragments (ITS, LSU and mtSSU) and morphological evidence. Molecular clock analysis was performed and the result suggests that the ancestor of Polyporales originated between the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous period, with a mean stem of 159.8 Mya [95% higher posterior density (HPD) of 142.4–184.1 Mya] and the genus Haploporus occurred at a mean stem of 108.3 Mya (95% HPD of 88.5–128.2 Mya). In addition, most species of the genus are diversified between 60.5 Mya and 1.8 Mya, during the Paleogene to Neogene. A key to the accepted species of the genus Haploporus is provided.

Fuscoporia is a cosmopolitan, poroid, wood-decaying genus, belonging to the Hymenochaetales. During a study of wood-inhabiting fungi in the USA, four unknown specimens were collected from Hawaii. Both morphological criteria and molecular genetic analyses based on the ITS+nLSU+EF1-α datasets and the nLSU dataset confirmed that these four specimens represent two new species of Fuscoporia, and they are described as F. hawaiiana and F. minutissima. Fuscoporia hawaiiana is characterized by pileate basidiocarps, the absence of cystidioles, hooked hymenial setae, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores measuring 4−6 × 3.5−4.5 μm. Fuscoporia minutissima is distinguished by small pores (10−13 per mm) and basidiospores (3.4−4 × 2.4−3 μm). The taxonomic status of the two new species is briefly discussed. A key to the North American species of Fuscoporia is provided.

Phylogenetic and morphological analyses on Rigidoporus were carried out. The genus Rigidoporus (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota), typified by R. microporus (Fr.) Overeem. (synonym Polyporus micromegas Mont.), was established by Murrill in 1905. The genus is mainly characterized by annual to perennial, resupinate, effused-reflexed to pileate or stipitate basidiomata with azonate or concentrically zonate and sulcate upper surface, a monomitic to pseudo-dimitic hyphal structure, simple-septate generative hyphae, and ellipsoid to globose basidiospores. Phylogeny on species of the genus is reconstructed with two loci DNA sequences including the internal transcribed spacer regions and the large subunit. Three new species in Rigidoporus are described and illustrated from Asia, and one new combination in the genus is proposed. The main morphological characteristics of the currently accepted species of Rigidoporus are provided.

Two new species of Phylloporia, P. crystallina and P. sumacoensis, are described based on 28S ribosomal RNA phylogeny, morphology, host, and geographic distribution. Phylloporia crystallina is characterized by pileate, perennial basidiomata with a duplex context, small pores 9–10 per mm, a monomitic hyphal system, absence of cystidia and cystidioles, presence of large rhomboid crystals in tube trama, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores measuring 2.8–3 × 2–2.3 μm, and growth on angiosperm stump. Phylloporia sumacoensis is characterized by pileate, perennial basidiomata with a duplex context, very small pores 10–12 per mm, a monomitic hyphal system, hyphae at dissepiment edges bearing fine crystals, presence of cystidioles, broadly ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores measuring 3–3.7 × 2.1–2.8 μm, and growth on living liana.

At present, 25 species are accepted in Haploporus and are distributed in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and Africa. In this study, two new species, Haploporus ecuadorensis from Ecuador and H. monomitica from China, are described and illustrated based on morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses. H. ecuadorensis is characterized by annual, resupinate basidiomata with pinkish buff to honey yellow hymenophore when dry, round to angular pores of 2–4 per mm, a dimitic hyphal structure with generative hyphae bearing clamp connections, hyphae at dissepiment edge usually with one or two simple septa, the presence of dendrohyphidia and cystidioles, and oblong to ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 14.9–17.9 × 6.9–8.8 µm. Haploporus monomitica differs from other Haploporus species in that it has a monomitic hyphal system and strongly dextrinoid basidiospores. The differences between the new species and morphologically similar and phylogenetically related species are discussed. In addition, an updated key to 27 species of Haploporus is provided.

Two new species in Hymenochaetaceae, Fulvifomes acaciae and Pyrrhoderma nigra, are illustrated and described from tropical Asia and America based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses. F. acaciae is characterized by perennial, pileate, and woody hard basidiomata when fresh; ash gray to dark gray, encrusted, concentrically sulcate, and irregularly cracked pileal surface; circular pores of 7–8 per mm with entire dissepiments; a dimitic hyphal system in trama and context; absence of setal element and presence of cystidioles; and broadly ellipsoid, yellowish brown, thick-walled, and smooth basidiospores measuring 5–6 μm × 4–5 μm. P. nigra is characterized by perennial and resupinate basidiomata with dark gray to almost black pore surface when fresh; small and circular pores of 7–9 per mm, a monomitic hyphal system with generative hyphae simple septate, hyphoid setae dominant in subiculum but not in tube trama, and absence of cystidia; and ellipsoid, hyaline, thin-walled basidiospores measuring 4–5 μm × 3–3.6 μm. The differences between the new species and morphologically similar and phylogenetically related species are discussed. Keys to Fulvifomes and Pyrrhoderma have also been provided.

Phylogenetic and morphological analyses on samples of Fistulina from East Asia and North America were carried out, and two new species were described, namely, Fistulina americana and Fistulina orientalis, both previously known as Fistulina hepatica. The former is characterized by lateral stipitate basidiocarps, relatively small pores (7–8 per mm), a monomitic hyphal system with both clamp connections and simple septa, and ellipsoid basidiospores of 4–4.8 × 3–3.3 μm, and the species has been found on Quercus in North-East USA. F. orientalis is characterized by lateral stipitate basidiocarps, very small pores (11–12 per mm) with pruinose dissepiments, a monomitic hyphal system with both clamp connections and simple septa, and ovoid to subglobose basidiospores of 3–4 × 2.7–3 μm, and the species has been found on Castanopsis in East Asia. Phylogenetically, samples of F. americana and F. orientalis form two new lineages nested in the Fistulina clade.

Megasporoporia sensu lato has recently been intensively studied in China and South America, and four independent clades representing four genera have been recognized phylogenetically. In this study, more samples, mostly from subtropical and tropical Asia, Oceania, and East Africa, are analyzed. A phylogeny based on a 4-gene dataset of sequences (ITS + nLSU + mtSSU + tef) has confirmed the presence of four genera in Megasporoporia sensu lato: Jorgewrightia, Mariorajchenbergia, Megasporia, and Megasporoporia sensu stricto. Six new species, Jorgewrightia austroasiana, Jorgewrightia irregularis, Jorgewrightia tenuis, Mariorajchenbergia subleucoplaca, Megasporia olivacea, and Megasporia sinuosa, are described based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis. Three new combinations are proposed, viz. Jorgewrightia kirkii, Mariorajchenbergia epitephra, and Mariorajchenbergia leucoplaca. To date, 36 species of Megasporoporia sensu lato are accepted and an identification key to these species is provided. In addition, the identification of Dichomitus amazonicus, Dichomitus cylindrosporus, and Megasporoporia hexagonoides is discussed.

Taxonomy of Spongipellis sensu stricto is revised based on morphological studies and DNA data. Here, the genus is accepted as a member of Meripilaceae, and it contains five species. Of them, S. spumea, the generic type, occurs in Europe, two species, S. ambiens (= Tyromyces sibiricus) and S. variispora sp. nov., are found in East Asia, and S. profissilis comb. nov., is reported from Central Europe, Siberia and Far East Asia. The North-American species, S. occidentalis, is reinstated as a separate species and redescribed here based on historical material.

Phaeolus schweinitzii (Fr.) Pat. was originally described in Europe and is considered a common forest pathogen on conifers in the Northern Hemisphere. Our molecular phylogeny based on samples from China, Europe, and North America confirms that P. schweinitzii is a species complex, including six taxa. P. schweinitzii sensu stricto has a distribution in Eurasia; the samples from Northeast and Southwest China are distantly related to P. schweinitzii sensu stricto, and two new species are described after morphological, phylogenetic, and geographical analyses. The species growing on Larix, Picea, and Pinus in Northeast China is described as Phaeolus asiae-orientalis. Another species mostly occurring on Pinus yunnanensis in Southwest China is Phaeolus yunnanensis. In addition, three taxa distributed in North America differ from P. schweinitzii sensu stricto. Phaeolus tabulaeformis (Berk.) Pat. is in Southeast North America, “P. schweinitzii-1” in Northeast North America, and “P. schweinitzii-2” in western North America.

Four new species of Bjerkandera, viz. B. ecuadorensis, B. fulgida, B. minispora, and B. resupinata spp. nov., are described from tropical America and Asia. B. ecuadorensis is characterised by dark grey to black pore surface, a monomitic hyphal system, hyaline to yellowish-brown generative hyphae, and ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 3.9–4.5 × 2.7–3 μm. B. fulgida is distinguished from the other species in the genus by clay buff to pale brown and shiny pore surface. B. minispora is characterised by white tomentose pore mouth and small basidiospores measuring 3.1–4.2 × 2–2.8 μm. B. resupinata is characterised by resupinate basidiomata, pinkish buff to pale brownish pore surface, and ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 4.5–6 × 3.2–4.1 µm. All these new species grow on angiosperm trunks or rotten wood, and cause a white rot. The closely related taxa to four new species are discussed. An identification key to the ten accepted species of Bjerkandera is provided, and a phylogeny comprising all known Bjerkandera species is provided.

Four species of Haploporus, H. angustisporus, H. crassus, H. gilbertsonii and H. microsporus are described as new and H. pirongia is proposed as a new combination, based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred from internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU) sequences. Haploporus angustisporus, H. crassus and H. microsporus occur in China, H. gilbertsonii occurs in the USA, and the distribution of H. pirongia is extended from New Zealand to Australia. Haploporus angustisporus is characterized by the distinct narrow oblong basidiospores measuring 10.5–13.5 × 3.9–5 µm. Haploporus crassus is characterized by the presence of ventricose cystidioles occasionally with a simple septum, dissepimental hyphae usually with a simple septum, unique thick-walled basidia and distinctly wide oblong basidiospores measuring 13.5–16.5 × 7.5–9.5 µm. Haploporus gilbertsonii is characterized by its large pores (2–3 per mm), a dimitic hyphal structure with non-dextrinoid skeletal hyphae and wide oblong basidiospores measuring 12–15 × 6–8 µm. Haploporus microsporus is characterized by distinctly small pores (7–9 per mm), the presence of dendrohyphidia, and distinctly small ellipsoid basidiospores measuring 5.3–6.7 × 3–4.1 µm. Haploporus pirongia is proposed as a new combination. Haploporus amarus is shown to be a synonym of H. odorus and Pachykytospora wasseri is considered a synonym of H. subtrameteus.

Fomitiporella austroasiana, F. mangrovei and F. vietnamensis are described and illustrated as new species based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. They have annual to perennial, mostly resupinate basidiomata with grayish fresh pores, an indistinct subiculum, lack any kind of setae, have brownish, thick-walled basidiospores, and cause a white rot. The distinctive morphological characters of the new species and their related species are discussed. Phylogenies based on the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (28S) and the nuclear ribosomal ITS region show that these three new species form three distinct lineages in the Fomitiporella clade. A key to known species of Fomitiporella is given.

The family Nigrofomitaceae has been considered to be a member of Polyporales and a synonym of Polyporaceae for a long time. However, no molecular evidence supports this taxonomic opinion. For the first time, Nigrofomitaceae is included in a phylogenetic analysis, which shows that this family is separated from Polyporales and nested within Hymenochaetales as a distinct lineage from four well-known families, viz. Hymenochaetaceae, Neoantrodiellaceae, Oxyporaceae and Schizoporaceae. Therefore, Nigrofomitaceae is treated as the fifth family of Hymenochaetales. Nigrofomes melanoporus, the type species of Nigrofomitaceae, was considered to have a pantropical distribution. However, from both morphological and phylogenetic perspectives, the Chinese specimens labelled as N. melanoporus are found not to be conspecific with the specimens of N. melanoporus from Costa Rica, close to the type locality in Cuba. These Chinese specimens are thus described as a new species Nigrofomes sinomelanoporus. The species diversity of Nigrofomes in pantropical region is discussed.

Two new species of Fulvifomes are described from samples collected in America based on morphological characteristic and molecular evidence: F. centroamericanus Y.C. Dai, X.H. Ji & Vlasák, sp. nov. and F. krugiodendri Y.C. Dai, X.H. Ji & Vlasák, sp. nov. The former is characterized by perennial and sessile basidiocarps, a concentrically sulcate and cracked pileal surface, a homogeneous context, small pores (7–9 per mm), a dimitic hyphal system, subglobose, yellowish and thick-walled basidiospores 4.3–5 × 4–4.5 μm. Macroscopically it resembles F. merrillii, which differs in having larger basidiospores (5–6 × 4–5 μm). F. centroamericanus is similar to F. robiniae in sharing applanate basidiocarps and subglobose, yellowish and thick-walled basidiospores 3.9–4.5 × 3.7–4.2 μm, whereas F. robiniae has larger basidiospores (5–6 × 4.5–5 μm). In nuclear large subunit rDNA (nLSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) based phylogenies, the two new species formed two distinct lineages in the Fulvifomes clade.

We explored whether DNA-phylogeny-based and morphology-based genus concepts can be reconciled in the basidiomycete family Phanerochaetaceae. Our results show that macromorphology of fruiting bodies and hymenophore construction do not reflect monophyletic groups. However, by integrating micromorphology and re-defining genera, harmonization of DNA phylogeny and morphological genus concepts is possible in most cases. In the case of one genus (Phlebiopsis), our genetic markers could not resolve genus limits satisfactorily and a clear morphological definition could not be identified. We combine extended species sampling, microscopic studies of fruiting bodies and phylogenetic analyses of ITS, nLSU and rpb1 to revise genus concepts. Three new polypore genera are ascribed to the Phanerochaetaceae: Oxychaete gen. nov. (type Oxyporus cervinogilvus), Phanerina gen. nov. (type Ceriporia mellea), and Riopa (including Ceriporia metamorphosa and Riopa pudens sp. nov.). Phlebiopsis is extended to include Dentocorticium pilatii, further species of Hjortstamia and the monotypic polypore genus Castanoporus. The polypore Ceriporia inflata is combined into Phanerochaete. The identity of the type species of the genus Riopa, R. davidii, has been misinterpreted in the current literature. The species has been included in Ceriporia as a species of its own or placed in synonymy with Ceriporia camaresiana. The effort to properly define R. davidii forced us to study Ceriporia more widely. In the process we identified five closely related Ceriporia species that belong to the true Ceriporia clade (Irpicaceae). We describe those species here, and introduce the Ceriporia pierii group. We also select a lectotype and an epitype for Riopa metamorphosa and neotypes for Sporotrichum aurantiacum and S. aurantium, the type species of the anamorphic genus Sporotrichum, and recommend that teleomorphic Riopa is conserved against it.

Phylogeny and taxonomy of the genus Haploporus were carried out based on a larger number of samples covering a wider geographic range including East Asia, South Asia, Europe, and America, and the species diversity of the genus is updated. Four species, Haploporus bicolor, H. longisporus, H. punctatus and H. srilankensis, are described as new species based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses inferred from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), and the small subunit mitochondrial rRNA gene (mtSSU). Haploporus bicolor is characterized by the distinctly different colors between the pore surface and the tubes, small pores measuring 5–7 per mm, and narrow basidiospores measuring 10.5–11.9 × 4.5–5 µm; H. longisporus differs from other species in the genus by its large pores measuring 2–3 per mm, hyphae at dissepiment edge with simple septum, and the long basidiospores (up to 22 µm); H. punctatus is distinguished by its cushion-shaped basidiocarps, wide fusiform cystidioles with a simple septum at the tips, the absence of dendrohyphidia and the cylindrical to slightly allantoid basidiospores measuring 9–10.8 × 3.8–5 µm; H. srilankensis is characterized by its perennial habit, small pores measuring 4–5 per mm, dextrinoid skeletal hyphae, the presence of cystidioles and dendrohyphidia. An identification key to accepted species of Haploporus is provided.

We validate two invalidly published species names, Ceriporia mpurii and C. pierii.

Two species of Diplomitoporus were studied from Central America and notes about their distribution are presented. Noteworthy records include Diplomitoporus dilutabilis Log.-Leite et J.E. Wright, which is reported for the first time to Guatemala and Diplomitoporus hondurensis (Murrill) Ryvarden, which is found in a new locality from Belize. A list of Diplomitoporus species cited from America is presented.Se estudiaron 2 especies de Diplomitoporus de America Central y se presentan notas sobre su distribución. Sobresale Diplomitoporus dilutabilis Log.-Leite et J.E. Wright, que se registra por primera vez para Guatemala y Diplomitoporus hondurensis (Murrill) Ryvarden, se encontró en una nueva localidad en Belice. Soil erosion estimation is an important part of a land consolidation process. Universal soil loss equation (USLE) was presented by Wischmeier and Smith. USLE computation uses several factors, namely R – rainfall factor, K – soil erodability, L – slope length factor, S – slope gradient factor, C – cropping management factor, and P – erosion control management factor. L and S factors are usually combined to one LS factor – Topographic factor. The single factors are determined from several sources, such as DTM (Digital Terrain Model), BPEJ – soil type map, aerial and satellite images, etc. A conventional approach to the USLE computation, which is widely used in the Czech Republic, is based on the selection of characteristic profiles for which all above-mentioned factors must be determined. The result (G – annual soil loss) of such computation is then applied for a whole area (slope) of interest. Another approach to the USLE computation uses grids as a main data-structure. A prerequisite for a grid-based USLE computation is that each of the above-mentioned factors exists as a separate grid layer. The crucial step in this computation is a selection of appropriate grid resolution (grid cell size). A large cell size can cause an undesirable precision degradation. Too small cell size can noticeably slow down the whole computation. Provided that the cell size is derived from the source’s precision, the appropriate cell size for the Czech Republic varies from 30m to 50m. In some cases, especially when new surveying was done, grid computations can be performed with higher accuracy, i.e. with a smaller grid cell size. In such case, we have proposed a new method using the two-step computation. The first step computation uses a bigger cell size and is designed to identify higher erosion spots. The second step then uses a smaller cell size but it make the computation only the area identified in the previous step. This decomposition allows a quick computation while the precision degradation is smaller then in the one-step computation. The above-described two-step method is suitable mainly for a combination of larger areas (several cadastral areas) and high precision sources at the same time. It is evident that in present time such a combination is rather unique, which means that in most cases the one-step computation with 30m–50m cell sizes is adequate. It is expected that in the future all sources used for the determination of the factors will have a higher accuracy and, therefore, the two-step computation will be needed.
