4. Nucleation and Growth of Stellated Gold Clusters: Experimental Synthesis and Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical study on the structure and energetics of stellated gold clusters at several sizes is presented. Systematic molecular dynamics simulations on Kepler-Poisont classified clusters are performed based on cubo-octahedral and icosahedral cores, following present and previous studies that suggest stellated clusters grew up from these seeds. For cluster sizes up to 10802 atoms full atomistic molecular dynamics simulations at room temperature have been carried out. Results show that stellated clusters in the bigger size regime maintain their star-like shape at room temperature, and by means of linear fitting of energy data to proper function models, it is predicted that the two type of stellated structures might coexist at room temperature for relatively large sizes, being these findings in good agreement with experimental results., Comment: 11 figures, plus 1 as graphical abstract

Abstract

Structural and energy stability results for a new class of decahedral structural motif termed decmon (Montejano's decahedra) are presented. After making proper truncations to the regular icosahedron, this structural motif presents exposed <100> and <111> facets, whose energetic competition make the structures very stable. It is also identified structural transitions as a function of the cluster size, the appearing and competition of surface reconstruction, and an outline for a path transformation from the Mackay icosahedra (I_h) to the regular decahedra (D_h) symmetry structures, as well as experimental evidence of the decmon decahedral motif in metallic nanoparticles., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The dopant characterization of the processed fin structures for fin field-effect transistor (FinFET), which is considered to be a function of the implantation conditions, is examined. The various simulations suggest that the various techniques used in the study can be combined with implantation for further optimization of FinFET processing parameters.

Abstract

The interactions of Pt nanoparticles, deposited by evaporation onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surfaces modified by kiloelectronvolt Ar(super +) beam treatment is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy core-level line shape analysis. Results indicate that Pt nanoparticles interact most extensively with the Ar(super +)-treated HOPG surface, and least extensively with the untreated HOPG surface.

Abstract

The experimental evidence is presented for segregation and preferential localization of C atoms at the surface and substrate interfaces in thin [Ge.sub.1-x][C.sub.x] films deposited directly on Si(100). The combination of energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has presented very strong experimental evidence of the preferential segregation of C atoms to the surface layers on a [Ge.sub.1-x][C.sub.x] film.
