2. Ultrafast Processes in Isomeric Pyrene-N-methylacetamides: Formation of Hydrogen Bond Induced Static Excimers with Varied Coupling Strength

Abstract

Pyrene based molecules are inclined to form excimers through self-association upon photoexcitation. In this work, the pyrene core is functionalized with N-methylacetamide group at the position 1 or 2, to develop pyren-1-methylacetamide (PyMA1) and pyren-2-methylacetamide (PyMA2), respectively. Upon photoexcitation, PyMA1 and PyMA2, at 1.0mM, in toluene, have formed predominantly static excimers. The steady state spectroscopic studies have showed that the excitonic coupling of PyMA1 dimers are much stronger in solution than its isomeric counterpart, PyMA2. The transient absorption (TA) measurements over fs-ps regime (fs-TA) showed that the formation of static excimers with the strongly-coupled pre-associated dimers, in PyMA1, happens in approx. 560fs, whereas, the excimers for the weakly-coupled pre-associated dimers in PyMA2 have formed in much slower time scale (approx. 65ps). The introduction of methylacetamide group at the position 1 or 2 on pyrene ring, was believed to have allowed forming hydrogen bonded excimers with different degrees of excitonic coupling.

12. The Effects of a Two-Year Molecular Visualization Experience on Teachers' Attitudes, Content Knowledge, and Spatial Ability

Abstract

This study measures changes in teachers' attitudes, content knowledge, and spatial ability following a two-year visualization workshop experience. The workshop involved intensive, half-day sessions over three weeks for two consecutive summers, in which the participants worked with three-dimensional models and computer-generated images. No changes were observed in content knowledge and only a few significant changes in attitude were found. However, this study did find that throughout the workshop teachers' spatial abilities significantly increased with use and decreased with lack of use. (Contains 1 list, 4 tables and 4 notes.)

26. Dry bean proteins: Extraction methods, functionality, and application in products for human consumption.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Legume proteins, such as those from dried beans, are extracted by methods that can be divided into aqueous or dry fractionation processes. Several techniques have been studied to improve protein extraction in legumes and their functional properties. This article provides relevant information on available extraction methods, their advantages and disadvantages, and the functionality and application of dried bean protein in the manufacture of food products. Findings: It is possible to obtain yields of up to 93% in dry bean protein extraction by the aqueous fractionation method, resulting in concentrates with a protein content above 70%. The combination of other treatments (thermal or not), applied before or after extraction, can improve the extraction yield and the functional properties of proteins, respectively. Dry fractionation allows yields of up to 30%, which can be improved with electrostatic separation. Bean proteins have equal or superior performance to soybeans in terms of emulsifying properties, high hydrophobicity, and foaming. Conclusions: Dry fractionation is a more sustainable method of protein extraction, as it uses few resources and preserves the native properties of proteins. Aqueous fractionation guarantees a higher protein yield. Dried beans are a raw material with enormous potential for protein extraction and application of its protein in the manufacture of vegetable‐based food products with added value and high nutritional and health benefits, such as vegetable meats, for example, which are part of the trend of this decade. Significance and novelty: This review provides insights into the different bean protein extraction methods and their combinations and how the functional properties can be influenced by them, providing the reader with an available resource to select the most appropriate extraction technique(s) for its application in food. 33. Demonstrating Antenna Miniaturisation for Radiolocation Applications using Double Elliptical Patches.

Abstract

Double Elliptical Micro-strip Patch Antenna (DEMPA) is developed out of Double Elliptical Patch (DEP) which is a recently proposed shape of patch. The use of DEP results in higher flexibility in design of patch antenna and thus promotes antenna miniaturisation. The present work is an attempt to demonstrate the miniaturisation of radiolocation antenna through the concept of Design Flexibility (DF). In this paper, optimised neural network model for synthesis of DEMPA has been developed for radiolocation applications for which the earmarked frequency band is 8.50 GHz - 10.50 GHz. With the help of synthesis model, for an arbitrary operational frequency of 9.85 GHz, radiolocation antennas with effective patch area ranging from 142 mm2 to 66 mm2 were designed by using DEPs. In this case, the percentage reduction in effective patch area was found to be 53.52%. It shows that double elliptical patches can be employed to develop miniaturised radiolocation antennas. One prototype antenna was fabricated and tested to demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology adopted. The fabricated antenna had resonance at 10.15 GHz with a reflection coefficient of -20.73dB and bandwidth of 3.106 GHz (from 7.458 GHz to 10.564 GHz). Its Fractional Bandwidth was 34.469%. Positive and reasonably good gain was maintained over the entire working band. At resonance, the peak gain was 4.22 dB. The measured characteristics of antenna were in close agreement with the simulated results. 40. Nanooptomechanical Transduction in a Single Crystal with 100% Photoconversion

Abstract

Materials that exhibit nanooptomechanical transduction in their single-crystal form have prospective use in light-driven molecular machinery, nanotechnology, and quantum computing. Linkage photoisomerization is typically the source of such transduction in coordination complexes, although the isomers tend to undergo only partial photoconversion. We present a nanooptomechanical transducer, trans-[Ru(SO2)(NH3)4(3-bromopyridine)]tosylate2, whose S-bound η1-SO2isomer fully converts into an O-bound η1-OSO photoisomer that is metastable while kept at 100 K. Its 100% photoconversion is confirmed structurally via photocrystallography, while single-crystal optical absorption and Raman spectroscopies reveal its metal-to-ligand charge-transfer and temperature-dependent characteristics. This perfect optical switching affords the material good prospects for nanooptomechanical transduction with single-photon control.

41. Systems Approach of Photoisomerization Metrology for Single-Crystal Optical Actuators: A Case Study of [Ru(SO2)(NH3)4Cl]Cl

Abstract

Chemicals that undergo photoisomerization in their single-crystal form may act as optical actuators or sensors. It is important to determine the molecular-scale characteristics of this photoisomerization as they govern the macroscopic nature of the optical phenomenon. In situsingle-crystal X-ray diffraction has led the way in this field of characterization, with photoinduced crystal structures being realized via technical developments that have become known as “photocrystallography”. Single-crystal optical spectroscopy methods are less well developed in this research area, even though they provide synergistic information that is crucial for optimizing photoconversion levels in single-crystal optical actuators and enabling their comprehensive photoisomerization analysis. This paper demonstrates the importance of characterizing photoisomerism in crystalline media using a systems approach to photoisomerization metrology. Therefore, single-crystal optical spectroscopy, single-crystal Raman spectroscopy, and photocrystallography are concerted. The case study on [Ru(SO2)(NH3)4Cl]Cl (1) shows how this approach optimizes its photoconversion levels, using key parameters that are established by single-crystal optical absorption spectroscopy. These parameters furnish the design of single-crystal Raman spectroscopy and photocrystallography experiments which are needed for a comprehensive photoisomerization analysis of 1. Raman shifts identify photostructural changes in isolated bonds as a function of temperature. One such shift leads to the realization of a previously unidentified photoisomer in 1, which is then confirmed by photocrystallography that renders its 3-D light-induced crystal structure. Both optical-spectroscopy methods are concerted with imaging to evidence photochromic changes in single crystals that occur upon photoisomerization and upon their thermal decay, whose characteristics are realized via single-crystal Raman spectroscopy. Overall, an end-to-end operational pipeline is showcased for more optimally characterizing the light-induced optical properties and structures of single-crystal optical actuators.

Doctor of Ministry (DMin), La Iglesia Bautista Israel responde a la formación de una iglesia Bautista clásica de cuarenta y un años, que en los últimos ocho años se desafió a cambiar su modelo, interactuado con la comunidad en diferentes proyectos misionales, donde la filosofía de ser Iglesia en la comunidad ha movilizado a los creyentes a responder a las necesidades manifiestas en la ciudad. Esta interacción es producto de una iglesia que se estructuró en comunidades eclesiales para acompañar a los creyentes en su hábitat, a fin de enseñarles a ser Iglesia donde ellos participan de forma cotidiana. En la actualidad contamos con doce congregaciones que desarrollan todos los servicios de forma descentralizada. Este estudio busca establecer las razones por las cuales unas congregaciones mantuvieron su identidad misional, a diferencia de otras, que desarrollaron el modelo clásico de una iglesia Bautista, como es conocida en Ecuador. En la primera parte de este proyecto abordaremos los fundamentos de la iglesia, su historia, y trasfondo Bautista del Sur. También se analizará el papel de los misioneros que participaron en su fundación, al igual que consideraremos el marco más amplio, en relación a la conformación de la obra Bautista ecuatoriana y su incidencia en la praxis de la iglesia Israel. La segunda parte realiza un rastreo de los principios bíblico-teológicos que la iglesia Israel desarrolló en sus primeros treinta años de ministerio, donde la incidencia de una salvación personal es consecuente con una lectura de los Bautistas del Sur, influidos fuertemente por su cosmovisión separatista. Esta realidad el entendimiento de ser Bautista ha cambiado en los últimos ocho años, porque lo que se entiende por ser Bautista se ha ampliado, desarrollándose una teología que responde a la misión integral. Abstract

Protein energy wasting (PEW) is a syndrome of adverse nutritional changes common to chronic kidney disease patients. Handgrip strength (HGS) is a method to screen PEW as mentioned in the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative Guidelines. However, determining the validity of such method requires further and more thorough studies. This study, therefore, aims to determine the diagnostic validity of HGS in detecting PEW among patients on MHD.
