Task-specific focal upper limb dystonia can be part of the phenotypic spectrum of different types of hereditary dystonia. We investigated whether writer's cramp as presenting symptom is associated with mutations in DYT11, DYT16, or with the DYT1 GAG deletion in 43 patients. No DYT11 and DYT16 mutations were identified. One patient carried the GAG deletion in the DYT1 gene. In our cohort, writer's cramp as presenting symptom is not associated with mutations in DYT11, DYT16, but it can be the sole manifestation of DYT1 GAG deletion mutation carriers.

An important class of floating wave energy converters (that includes the IPS buoy, the Wavebob and the PowerBuoy) comprehends devices in which the energy is converted from the relative (essentially heaving) motion between two bodies oscillating differently. The paper considers the case of the IPS buoy, consisting of a floater rigidly connected to a fully submerged vertical (acceleration) tube open at both ends. The tube contains a piston whose motion relative to the floater-tube system (motion originated by wave action on the floater and by the inertia of the water enclosed in the tube) drives a power take-off mechanism (PTO) (assumed to be a linear damper). To solve the problem of the end-stops, the central part of the tube, along which the piston slides, bells out at either end to limit the stroke of the piston. The use of a hydraulic turbine inside the tube is examined as an alternative to the piston. A frequency domain analysis of the device in regular waves is developed, combined with a one-dimensional unsteady flow model inside the tube (whose cross-section is in general non-uniform). Numerical results are presented for a cylindrical buoy in regular waves, including the optimization of the acceleration tube geometry and PTO damping coefficient for several wave periods.

A frequency domain model to describe the behaviour of an articulated system in regular waves is developed. A stochastic model is found for the articulated wave power device. Probability density functions for relevant parameters that characterize the wave power system behaviour are found for different sea state conditions. Average values for useful power and capture length are also obtained for these sea state conditions. A time domain model is also developed for the articulated wave power device. Results for a linear power take-off configuration and regular waves are obtained and compared to the results obtained from the frequency model. A non-linear power take-off configuration is found. Results in regular wave conditions are obtained for this configuration, set in terms of different characteristic parameters. Results for this non-linear configuration for the power take-off and irregular waves are also computed and presented. Finally, these results are compared to the results obtained from the stochastic model.Copyright © 2008 by ASME

In the first part of this paper we describe our experiments in the automatic and interactive search tasks of TRECVID 2006. We submitted five fully automatic runs, including a text baseline, two runs based on visual features, and two runs that combine textual and visual features in a graph model. For the interactive search, we have implemented a new video search interface with relevance feedback facilities, based on both textual and visual features.\ud The second part is concerned with our approach to the high-level feature extraction task, based on textual information extracted from speech recogniser and machine translation outputs. They were aligned with shots and associated with high-level feature references. A list of significant words was created for each feature, and it was in turn utilised for identification of a feature during the evaluation.

Image searching is a creative process. We have proposed a novel image retrieval system that supports creative search sessions by allowing the user to organise their search results on a workspace. The workspace’s usefulness is evaluated in a task-oriented and user-centred comparative experiment, involving design professionals and several types of realistic search tasks. In particular, we focus on its effect on task conceptualisation and query formulation. A traditional relevance feedback system serves as a baseline. The results of this study show that the workspace is more useful in terms of both of the above aspects and that the proposed approach leads to a more effective and enjoyable search experience. This paper also highlights the influence of tasks on the users’ search and organisation strategy.

In this paper we describe K-Space’s participation in\ud TRECVid 2008 in the interactive search task. For 2008\ud the K-Space group performed one of the largest interactive\ud video information retrieval experiments conducted\ud in a laboratory setting. We had three institutions participating\ud in a multi-site multi-system experiment. In\ud total 36 users participated, 12 each from Dublin City\ud University (DCU, Ireland), University of Glasgow (GU,\ud Scotland) and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI,\ud the Netherlands). Three user interfaces were developed,\ud two from DCU which were also used in 2007 as well as\ud an interface from GU. All interfaces leveraged the same\ud search service. Using a latin squares arrangement, each\ud user conducted 12 topics, leading in total to 6 runs per\ud site, 18 in total. We officially submitted for evaluation 3\ud of these runs to NIST with an additional expert run using\ud a 4th system. Our submitted runs performed around\ud the median. In this paper we will present an overview of\ud the search system utilized, the experimental setup and a\ud preliminary analysis of our results.

This model receives as input a bookmark of a web page or scientific publication, and automatically suggests a set of social tags useful for annotating the bookmarked document. Analysing and processing the bookmark textual contents - document title, URL, abstract and descriptions - we extract a set of keywords, forming a query that is launched against an index, and retrieves a number of similar tagged bookmarks. Afterwards, we take the social tags of these bookmarks, and build their global co-occurrence sub-graph.
