Auxetic composite laminates, i.e. laminates with a NPR (Negative Poisson’s Ratio), are regarded as a promising solution to combat LVI (Low-velocity impact) delamination BVID (Barely visible internal damage) and ensuing property degradation, a cause for concern in aerospace components, mainly inflicted by fortuitous accidents during handling operations. In order to potentiate the auxetic effect through the minimization of the Poisson’s ratio, a thorough analysis of material properties and stacking sequences is required, as only a restricted domain of combinations can generate the desired effect, either in an IP (In-plane) or TTT (Through-the-thickness) configuration. This paper focuses on a MATLAB program developed for IP and TTT auxetic laminate design, based on the CLT (Classical Lamination Theory). Cases studies on NPR domain definition of C/E (Carbon/epoxy), G/E (Glass/epoxy) and hybrid C-G/E (Carbon-Glass/epoxy) laminates are presented. Moreover, the influence of fibre volume fraction on C/E and G/E laminates is analysed.

O artigo aborda a necessidade de um plano de investigação para a edição digital de forais medievais portugueses, destacando três requisitos essenciais. Primeiramente, destaca-se a importância de estabelecer um corpus textual coeso, evidenciando lacunas e desafios interpretativos de maneira consistente. Em segundo lugar, enfatiza-se a necessidade de metodologias e colaboração interdisciplinar, dada a complexidade desses documentos, que exigem contribuições de áreas como História, Diplomática, Paleografia e Linguística. Por fim, ressalta-se a importância de ferramentas digitais para recolha de dados e disseminação de edições digitais em formato aberto. O corpus apresenta desafios, como a interdependência entre documentos e a existência de várias versões dos forais, produzidas ao longo dos séculos. No âmbito do projeto iForal, Forais Medievais Portugueses: uma perspetiva histórica e linguística na era digital, identificaram-se cerca de 180 forais, com aproximadamente 400 testemunhos sobreviventes. A maioria dos testemunhos encontra-se em latim, representando um desafio linguístico. Desenvolveu-se um Sistema de Edição Digital Colaborativa (EDICOLAB) que inclui um módulo de edição, destinado ao trabalho colaborativo dos editores, e um módulo de visualização, destinado ao público geral. Trata-se de uma aplicação em ambiente web, que possibilita que os utilizadores não treinados em marcação XML possam contribuir para a edição eletrónica, com intervenções diferenciadas como a correção da transcrição ou a adição de comentários.

Introdução: O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar as lesões traumáticas tauromáquicas ocorridas nas touradas à corda nos Açores no que diz respeito à causa do incidente, mecanismo de trauma, área anatómica mais afetada e gravidade das lesões. Métodos: Estudo unicêntrico, transversal, com a colheita prospetiva de dados realizada durante dois anos. Foram incluídos os doentes que consecutivamente recorreram ao serviço de urgência do hospital local por lesões traumáticas ocorridas por trauma direto com o animal ou quedas aquando da fuga ou manuseio da corda. Foram colhidos dados demográficos gerais, características da lesão, tratamentos efetuados, necessidade de internamento hospitalar e mortalidade. Foi realizada uma análise estatística descritiva com recurso ao software estatístico SPSS. Resultados: Registaram-se 56 admissões hospitalares e 80 lesões traumáticas. A principal causa de traumatismo foi o trauma direto com o animal (37; 66,07%) e o mecanismo de lesão foi o trauma fechado (56; 100%). As áreas anatómicas mais afetadas foram a cabeça e pescoço (27; 33,75%). A mediana de Injury Severity Score foi de 4 à admissão hospitalar. Cinco doentes (8,92%) apresentaram trauma major. Dez doentes (17,85%) necessitaram de internamento hospitalar com uma mediana de dias de internamento de sete (IIQ 4,5 dias). Três (30%) dos doentes internados necessitaram de internamento em unidade de cuidados intensivos. Seis doentes (10,71%) foram submetidos a cirurgia. Conclusão: A principal causa de traumatismo foi o trauma direto com o animal e o mecanismo de lesão foi o trauma fechado. As áreas anatómicas mais afetadas foram a cabeça e pescoço. Estes dados constituem um alerta para o impacto destes eventos no que diz respeito aos custos económicos que acarretam, aos custos para a saúde da população local, às medidas de segurança atualmente implementadas e à disponibilidade dos meios necessários para tratar estes doentes.

The Gorongosa National Park (Mozambique) is one of the most emblematic protected areas in Africa, well known for its vertebrate biodiversity and restoration ecology efforts following the Mozambican civil war in 1992. The invertebrate biodiversity of Gorongosa National Park is still poorly studied, although the scarce information available indicates the existence of a rich number of species, namely in the case of tiger- and ground-beetles (Coleoptera, Caraboidea). Moreover, the study of arthropod assemblages is key for designing conservation practices since they are potentially accurate biodiversity and ecological indicators. Hence, the diversity assessment of Caraboidea beetles using standardised methodologies is likely to provide a new insight for future conservation planning and help to quantify the effects of climate change in areas identified as vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures, such as the Gorongosa National Park.We report the occurrence of five tiger beetles (Cicindelidae) and 93 ground-beetles (Carabidae) species/morphospecies in Gorongosa National Park from a field survey funded by the ECOASSESS project. Sampling was performed in the four main habitat types present in the Park (miombo tropical forest, mixed dry forest, transitional forest and grasslands) between 25 October and 25 November 2019. In this sampling window, the turnover of Caraboidea species from the dry season to the wet season was recorded for the first time. Twenty-eight species of ground-beetles are new records to Mozambique, including three new subgenera and three new genera. Additional information on species phenology and habitat preferences is also provided.

Abstract Dyslexics underperform controls in estimating and comparing time intervals defined by visual stimuli. Accuracy in vision-based duration perception requires efficient processing of visual events because these will define the onset and offset of time intervals. Since dyslexics have difficulties processing dimensions of visual stimuli like luminance contrasts and motion, we do not know the extent to which these visual deficits are responsible for their difficulties in judging time intervals. To address this gap, we asked adults with dyslexia and matched controls to perform an interval comparison task involving five different types of visual stimuli with different levels of challenge regarding luminance contrasts and motion. If the expected disadvantage of dyslexics in visual duration perception increased for stimuli requiring increased luminance or motion processing, this would indicate that visual processing plays a role. Results showed poorer time discrimination in dyslexics, but this disadvantage did not change according to stimulus type. Complementary analyses of oculomotor behavior during the task suggested that the poorer timing performance of dyslexics may relate instead to attention and/or engagement with the task. Our findings strengthen the evidence in favor of visual duration perception deficits in dyslexia, but not the hypothesis that these result from purely visual problems.

Caffeine affords several beneficial effects on human health, acting as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agent, and analgesic. Caffeine is widely used in cosmetics, but its antimicrobial activity has been scarcely explored, namely against skin infection agents. Dermatophytes are the most common fungal agents of human infection, mainly of skin infections. This work describes the in vitro effect of caffeine during keratinocyte infection by Trichophyton mentagrophytes, one of the most common dermatophytes. The results show that caffeine was endowed with antidermatophytic activity with a MIC, determined following the EUCAST standards, of 8 mM. Caffeine triggered a modification of the levels of two major components of the fungal cell wall, β-(1,3)-glucan and chitin. Caffeine also disturbed the ultrastructure of the fungal cells, particularly the cell wall surface and mitochondria, and autophagic-like structures were observed. During dermatophyte–human keratinocyte interactions, caffeine prevented the loss of viability of keratinocytes and delayed spore germination. Overall, this indicates that caffeine can act as a therapeutic and prophylactic agent for dermatophytosis.

Culinary aromatic herbs (CAHs), used worldwide for culinary and industrial purposes, are recognized for their wide range of beneficial health effects including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-type 2 diabetes mellitus, antitumorigenic and anticarcinogenic, and anti-hypertensive properties, in addition to glucose- and cholesterol-lowering activities as well as properties that affect mental health and cognition via their phytochemical constituents, such as polyphenols (flavonoids and non-flavonoids), sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds, alkaloids, minerals, and vitamins. Moreover, the volatile organic metabolites (VOMs) found in CAHs offer unique analytical biosignatures linked to their sensory qualities and organoleptic characteristics. This study aimed to establish the volatilomic pattern of CAHs commonly used in Europe and in the Mediterranean region, oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) and two savory species: savory (Satureja hortensis L.) and lemon savory (Satureja montana L. var. citriodora). The volatilomic pattern of CAHs was established using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) followed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) determination. This is a powerful strategy to unravel the potential health benefits related to the most important VOMs identified in each aromatic herb. This comprehensive understanding will aid in establishing the authenticity of these herbs, while also safeguarding against possible fraudulent activities and adulterations. A total of 112 VOMs from different chemical families were identified. Terpenoids amounted to the major chemical family in the investigated aromatic herbs accounting for 96.0, 95.1, and 79.7% of the total volatile composition for savory, lemon savory, and oregano, respectively. Apart from contributing to flavor profiles, certain identified VOMs also possess bioactive properties, opening interesting avenues for potential application in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors. The volatilomic pattern combined with unsupervised principal component analysis facilitated the differentiation of the aromatic herbs under investigation, revealing the most related VOMs in each sample, which can be used as markers for the authentication of these valuable aromatic herbs, such as caryophyllene oxide (103), camphene (6), p-cymene (23), and borneol (74), among others. In addition, some VOMs have a high influence on the aromatic herb’s bioactive potential, helping to prevent certain diseases including cancer, inflammatory-related diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

(1) Background: Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease with different manifestations, affecting the quality of life at social, emotional, and professional dimensions and requiring long-term treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of psychosocial and clinical factors on adherence to topical treatment in psoriasis. (2) Methods: Self-reported measures and weighing the medicines were used to assess adherence. Psychopathological symptoms were measured using the Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI). Social and clinical factors were assessed by a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire. Adherence to treatment with topical medication was assessed using a sample of 102 psoriasis patients. (3) Results: The explanatory models of adherence to topical treatment in psoriasis translated into positive associations between adherence and the education level (higher education) (p = 0.03; φ = 0.23), the single-family household (p = 0.01; φ = 0.44), active employment status (p = 0.05; φ = −0.19), familiar history of psoriasis (p = 0.04; φ = −0.21), and the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (p = 0.01; d = 0.29). (4) Conclusions: In patients who present the characteristics identified that influence non-adherence, instructions should be reinforced to increase adherence. The experimental mortality (39.6%) reduced the sample size, representing a limitation of the study.

Oral diseases are one of the biggest public health problems worldwide, caused by opportunistic pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. Cyperus articulatus (priprioca) is a plant conventionally used in traditional medicine in the Amazon region. However, little is known about the possible dentistry-related uses of extracts from the rhizomes and solid waste generated by the extraction of essential oils from this vegetable. This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of volatile compounds and antimicrobial activity through the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration test (MIC and assessment of the toxicity by Hens Egg Test-Chorion Allantoic Membrane (HET-CAM) of the ethanolic extracts from Cyperus articulatus intact rhizomes and solid waste. We identified sesquiterpenes as the main constituents, strong antimicrobial activity of the ethanolic extract of intact rhizomes against S. mutans (MIC = 0.29 mg/mL), moderate antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis of the extract obtained from the solid waste (MIC = 1.17 mg/mL), and absence of toxicity for both tested extracts. The absence of irritation and the antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract from C. articulatus rhizomes and solid waste reveal its potential for use in the alternative control of bacteria that cause oral infections and may present economic viability as a raw material for dental products.

Associations between reading performance and duration perception have been found both for domain-general and speech-specific duration perception. However, research seems limited to children and, critically, the predictive value of the two duration perception modalities has not been compared so far. In the present study we compared the weight of domain-general (comparison of time intervals defined by beeps) vs. speech-specific duration perception (pre-attentive EEG responses to consonants with different durations) as statistical predictors of reading in a sample of 46 neurotypical adults (18–43 years old) with 13 years of schooling on average. Reading included word and pseudoword decoding, as well as reading comprehension. We ran one regression model with domain-general and speech-specific duration perception as predictors for each of the three reading skills. Pseudoword decoding was the only reading skill that was significantly predicted by duration perception, and this happened for domain-general duration perception only. A complementary analysis adding 26 typically developing and 24 dyslexic adults to the main sample (n = 96 in total) showed the same pattern of results in dyslexics, but not in added controls. Our findings strengthen the idea that duration perception is important to phonological encoding and its use in grapheme-to-phoneme conversion, given that only pseudoword decoding was predicted by the interval comparison task. The irrelevance of speech-specific duration perception tones down the possibility that accurately perceiving the length of speech sounds is crucial to skilled reading.

Abstract Despite abundant evidence that music skills relate to enhanced reading performance, the mechanisms subtending this relation are still under discussion. The Temporal Sampling Framework (TSF) provides a well-defined explanation for the music-reading link: musical rhythm perception would relate to reading because it helps to encode speech units, which, in turn, is fundamental to reading. However, in spite of this clear mediation-based prediction (effect of music skills mediated by the encoding of speech units), the tests made to it so far remain inconclusive, either due to the use of hybrid measures (rhythm perception and production, musical and non-musical rhythm) or to underspecified mediation results (unclear presence of partial mediation). In the present study, we addressed these potential weaknesses of previous studies and investigated whether phonological memory and phonological awareness (proxies of speech encoding abilities) mediate the effects of rhythm perception abilities on reading in late first-graders. To test for the specificity of musical rhythm in this relation, we examined the same hypothesis for melody perception. Results showed full mediation for effects of musical rhythm perception, while melody perception did not even relate to reading. Our findings support the predictions embedded in the TSF and highlight the potential of rhythm-based interventions in early stimulation.

The treatment of dermatophytoses, the most common human fungal infections, requires new alternatives. The aim of this study was to determine the antidermatophytic activity of the aqueous Azorean Black Tea extract (ABT), together with an approach to the mechanisms of action. The phytochemical analysis of ABT extract was performed by HPLC. The dermatophytes susceptibility was assessed using a broth microdilution assay; potential synergies with terbinafine and griseofulvin were evaluated by the checkerboard assay. The mechanism of action was appraised by the quantification of the fungal cell wall chitin and β-1,3-glucan, and by membrane ergosterol. The presence of ultrastructural modifications was studied by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The ABT extract contained organic and phenolic acids, flavonoids, theaflavins and alkaloids. It showed an antidermatophytic effect, with MIC values of 250 µg/mL for Trichophyton mentagrophytes, 125 µg/mL for Trichophyton rubrum and 500 µg/mL for Microsporum canis; at these concentrations, the extract was fungicidal. An additive effect of ABT in association to terbinafine on these three dermatophytes was observed. The ABT extract caused a significant reduction in β-1,3-glucan content, indicating the synthesis of this cell wall component as a possible target. The present study identifies the antidermatophytic activity of the ABT and highlights its potential to improve the effectiveness of conventional topical treatment currently used for the management of skin or mucosal fungal infections.

Currently, composite resins have become the material of choice for the restoration of posterior teeth. Although bulk-fill resins represent a tempting alternative due to their lower complexity and faster use, some dentists are reluctant to use this material. The objective is to compare the performance of bulk-fill resins and conventional resins in direct restorations of posterior teeth based on the literature. The databases that were used to carry out the research were PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library and the WOS. This umbrella literature review complies with PRISMA standards and assesses the quality of studies using the AMSTAR 2 tool. With the application of the criteria of the AMSTAR 2 tool, the reviews were considered low to moderate. The overall meta-analysis, although without statistical significance, favours mostly the use of conventional resin, as it is about five times more likely to obtain a favourable result than bulk-fill resin. Bulk-fill resins result in a simplification of the clinical process of posterior direct restorations, which is an advantage. The performance in terms of several properties of bulk-fill resins and conventional resins showed that they present similar behaviour.

Malaria is an infectious and parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, which affects millions of people in tropical and subtropical areas. Recently, there have been multiple reports of drug resistance in Plasmodium populations, leading to the search for potential new active compounds against the parasite. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the in vitro antiplasmodial activity and cytotoxicity of the hydroalcoholic extract of Jucá (Libidibia ferrea) in serial concentrations. Jucá was used in the form of a freeze-dried hydroalcoholic extract. For the cytotoxicity assay, the(3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method with the WI-26VA4 human cell line was used. For the antiplasmodial activity, Plasmodium falciparum synchronized cultures were treated with serial concentrations (0.2 to 50 μg/mL) of the Jucá extract. In terms of the chemical composition of the Jucá extract, gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry measurements revealed the main compounds as ellagic acid, valoneic acid dilactone, gallotannin, and gallic acid. The Jucá hydroalcoholic extract did not show cytotoxic activity per MTT, with an IC50 value greater than 100 µg/mL. Regarding the antiplasmodial activity, the Jucá extract presented an IC50 of 11.10 µg/mL with a selective index of nine. Because of its antiplasmodial activity at the tested concentrations and low toxicity, the Jucá extract is presented as a candidate for herbal medicine in the treatment of malaria. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of antiplasmodial activity in Jucá.

The lifecycle of COVID-19 pandemic curves requires timely decisions to protect public health while minimizing the impact to global economy. New models are necessary to predict the effect of mobility suppression/reactivation decisions at a global scale. This research presents an approach to understand such tensions by modeling air travel restrictions during the new coronavirus outbreak. The paper begins with an updated review on the impact of air mobility in infectious disease progression, followed by the adoption of complex networks based on semi-supervised statistical learning. The model can be used to (1) determine the early identification of infectious disease spread via air travel and (2) align the need to keep the economy working with open connections and the different dynamic of national pandemic curves. The approach takes advantage of open data and machine self-supervised statistical learning to develop knowledge networks visualization. Test cases using Hong Kong and Wuhan aerial mobility are discussed in the decisions to (1) restrict and (2) increase mobility. The approach may also be of governments use in their international cooperation policy and commercial companies that need to choose how to prioritize the re-opening of international trade routes.

Aqueous-phase reforming (APR) can convert methanol and other oxygenated hydrocarbons to hydrogen and carbon dioxide at lower temperatures when compared with the corresponding gas phase process. APR favours the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction and inhibits alkane formation; moreover, it is a simpler and more energy efficient process compared to gas-phase steam reforming. For example, Pt-based catalysts supported on alumina are typically selected for methanol APR, due to their high activity at temperatures of circa 200°C. However, non-noble catalysts such as nickel (Ni) supported on metal-oxides or zeolites are being investigated with promising results in terms of catalytic activity and stability. The development of APR kinetic models and reactor designs is also being addressed to make APR a more attractive process for producing in situ hydrogen. This can also lead to the possibility of APR integration with high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The integration can result into increased overall system efficiency and avoiding critical issues faced in the state-of-the-art fuel cells integrated with methanol steam reforming.

Many natural products play important roles as antioxidants and represent useful scaffolds for the development of new agents. Particularly, polyphenols in which oxygenated xanthones can be included have proven their efficacy as antioxidants for several applications. To better understand the antioxidant potential of oxygenated xanthones, a library of twenty mono and di-oxygenated xanthones was investigated. The antioxidant properties were evaluated by their 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and peroxyl radical scavenging effect as well as their inhibitory effect on the prooxidant enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO). A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model predicted the maximal atomic partial charge (Qmax) as the descriptor being implied in the antioxidant activity of the referred xanthones. From the antioxidant screening, emerged the hit compound, 1,2-dihydroxyxanthone (10), that was further characterized for its chelating properties and its effect on a human keratinocyte cell line. Taken together, the results suggest the possible effectiveness of xanthone derivatives as antioxidants with potential for topical administration. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the microleakage of composite resin restorations under a total-etch adhesive system applied with two different techniques, with and without cure. Cavities were made on the buccal surface of twenty-six intact teeth and subsequently restored with bulk-fill flow composite resin (SDR®® flow+) and conventional resin (Spectra™ ST HV). Two experimental groups were created, one where the total-etch adhesive (Prime & Bond Active®) was cured and another where the adhesive was not cured before placing the flowable resin. Two control groups were also created, negative and positive. After the restorations were finished the, teeth were submerged in a solution of sodium pertechnetate (99mTcNaO4) for 3 h to evaluate the microleakage. The results showed more infiltration of radioisotopes characterized by the highest total count values of microleakage in group 1 (cured adhesive) and in the positive control. Group 2 (noncured adhesive) and the negative control showed lower values. We therefore considered that these groups were similar since their p-value was less than 0.05, with no statistically significant difference. Group 4 showed a statistically significant increase in relation to group 3 (p = 0.027). We concluded that the method of bulk-fill composite resins with noncured adhesive agents can have a positive effect on the longevity of bond strengths, with reduced microleakage.

Hybrid bioactive composite resins combine the benefits of glass ionomer cements with composite resins. Its self-adhesiveness is achieved through functional polyacrylic acids and carboxylic groups, hybridizing the smear layer and establishing ionic interactions between calcium and dentin. These materials are defined as having good aesthetics, moisture tolerance, durability, simplicity in technique and handling and are able to maintain a low microfiltration rate while releasing calcium, phosphate and fluorine. The aim of the present study was to evaluate microleakage in restorations using Surefill One™ bioactive resin. The null hypothesis is that this type of resin does not obtain a lower microleakage rate when compared to other materials. An in vitro study was carried out using thirty-six premolars and molars extracted for orthodontic reasons. Identical preparations were thus performed in all of them (Class V with 4 mm mesio-distal, 3 mm occluso-gingival and 3 mm in depth) and divided into different experimental groups: one positive control, one negative control and two tests with bioactive composite resin and conventional composite resin (Surefill One™ and Spectra™ ST HV, respectively). Through quantitative techniques using nuclear medicine, it was possible to evaluate microleakage through the use of a radioactive isotope, technetium. Radioactivity emitted by the specimens was detected by a gamma camera. The different groups were compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Games–Howell test for multiple comparisons. The results of the experimental study point to statistically significant differences between the test groups (p = 0.002) with increased microleakage in the bioactive composite resin group. Based on the present microleakage study, it was possible to conclude that the bioactive composite resin (Surefill One™) does not reduce the microleakage rate when compared to a conventional nanohybrid composite resin (Spectra™ ST HV). However, Surefill One™ can be used in temporary restorations, primary teeth and in cases of tissue remineralization, thus avoiding more invasive procedures.

COVID-19 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent severe problems in health centers and public areas. Polyester/cotton (PES/CO) blend fabrics have been functionalized with copper oxides on an industrial scale. For functionalization, the impregnation dyeing technique was applied. The functionalized samples were tested virologically against SARS-CoV-2 and human coronavirus (229E) according to ISO 18184-2019 and microbiologically against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) bacteria according to ASTM E2149-2013. The results show that the fabric functionalized with copper oxides inactivated both viruses after 30 min of exposure, presenting excellent virucidal activity against 229E and SARS-CoV-2, respectively. Furthermore, its inactivation efficiency for SARS-CoV-2 was 99.93% and 99.96% in 30 min and 60 min exposure, respectively. The fabric inhibited bacterial growth by more than 99% before and after 10 and 20 washes. In conclusion, 265 m of PES/CO fabric (wide 1.7 m) was functionalized in situ on an industrial scale with copper oxide nanoparticles. The functionalized fabric presented virucidal and bactericidal properties against SARS-CoV-2 and Escherichia coli.

A 44-year-old woman presented with headache and delirium. Brain tomography indicated pneumocephalus, while blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures revealed Streptococcus pneumoniae. Despite antibiotic treatment and admission to the intensive care unit, the patient died 3 days later. Pneumocephalus in association with meningitis is very rare and may be caused by gas produced by microorganisms.

Resumo A indisciplina revela-se um conceito de difícil definição que surge invariavelmente associado ao contexto escolar. A definição de indisciplina assenta numa oposição clara ao conceito de disciplina e assume-se como uma quebra da ordem, de regras e de normas, prejudicando a prossecução e/ou alcance de um objetivo. Este estudo destina-se a analisar o fenômeno supracitado num agrupamento de escolas, nomeadamente ao nível do segundo ciclo, e verificar a adequação das medidas tomadas no combate à indisciplina. Recorreu-se a uma abordagem qualitativa, em que se pretendeu caracterizar a indisciplina no agrupamento de escolas em estudo, analisando os dados recolhidos através de um método interpretativo-qualitativo. Por meio dessa análise concluiu-se que, apesar de o agrupamento enveredar por combater o fenômeno de forma coerente com a legislação em vigor e implementar esforços para a sua erradicação, a indisciplina continua a persistir, devido a fatores internos e externos.

This study aimed to compare the acute effect of a proprioceptive exercise session and a non-specific exercise session on knee position sense, and the static and dynamic balance of athletes. Sixty male athletes (19.4 ± 1.2 years) participated in a within-subjects repeated-measures study. Knee position sense in closed kinetic chain, and static (BESS test) and dynamic balance (Y-balance test) were measured before and after two exercise sessions, consisting of 10 min of non-specific exercise in a cycle-ergometer or proprioceptive exercise with an unstable platform. Overall, both exercise sessions significantly improved knee position sense, BESS score, and YBT composite score, and no differences were detected between proprioceptive and non-specific sessions (knee position sense, −6.9 ± 65.2% vs. −11.5 ± 75.0%, p = 0.680; BESS, −19.3 ± 47.7% vs. −29.03 ± 23.5%, p = 0.121; YBT, 2.6 ± 2.7% vs. 2.2 ± 2.2%, p = 0.305). Twenty athletes did not improve knee position sense after the exercise session (non-responders). When analyzing only the exercise responders, both sessions improved knee position sense, but the improvement was greater after the proprioceptive exercise session (56.4 ± 25.6% vs. 43.8 ± 18.9%, p = 0.023). In conclusion, a single proprioceptive, as well as non-specific, exercise session increased knee position sense and balance. The proprioceptive exercise seems to be more effective in improving joint position sense when considering only athletes who respond to the intervention.

Copaifera reticulata Ducke is a popularly known species known as copaíba that is widely spread throughout the Amazon region. The tree yields an oleoresin which is extensively used in local traditional medicine mainly as an anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive agent. The aim of the present study was to assess the anti-inflammatory potential of this oleoresin obtained from a national forest in the central Amazon which presented an unusual chemical composition. The chemical composition of volatile compounds of oleoresin was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The acute toxicity assay was performed with a single dose of 2000 mg/kg. The anti-inflammatory potential was evaluated by carrageenan-induced paw edema and air pouch assays using four different C. reticulata oleoresin concentrations (10, 100, and 400 mg/kg). The exudate was evaluated for nitrite concentration through the colorimetric method and for TNF-α, IL-1β, and PGE2 by ELISA. C. reticulata oleoresin collected in the Amazonian summer contained six major sesquiterpene compounds (β-bisabolene, cis-eudesma-6,11-diene, trans-α-bergamotene, β-selinene, α-selinene, and β-elemene) and was nontoxic at a dose of 2000 mg/kg, showing low acute toxicity. Different from oleoresin obtained from other sites of the Brazilian Amazon, the major volatile compound found was β-Bisabolene with 25.15%. This β-Bisabolene-rich oleoresin reduced the formation of paw edema induced by carrageenan and reduced the global number of cells in the air pouch assay, as well as exudate volume and nitrite, TNF-α, IL-1β, and prostaglandin E2 levels (p < 0.05). C. reticulata oleoresin with a high β-Bisabolene concentration showed anti-inflammatory activity, reducing vascular permeability and consequently edema formation, and thus reducing cell migration and the production of inflammatory cytokine, confirming its traditional use by local Amazonian communities.

Background: Hyperuricemia is common in patients with hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Whether it is an independent cardiovascular risk factor (CVRF) or not remains controversial. Purpose: To determine the prognostic value of uricemia in the setting of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Methods: Retrospective single-center study comprising 1187 patients consecutively admitted into a cardiac intensive care unit for ACS, in whom uricemia was measured during hospitalization. Follow-up targeted all-cause mortality (FUM), reinfarction, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and acute heart failure (AHF). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, version 25. Results: Mean age was 68.0 ± 13.3y and 30.4% were female. Prevalence of CVRF was as follows: hypertension, 76.9%; diabetes, 33.4%; dyslipidemia, 65.6%; smoking, 35.5%; chronic kidney disease (CKD), 20.5%. Uricemia was 377 ± 119.2 μmol/l, whereas body mass index (BMI) was 27.8 ± 4.4 kg/m2. In-hospital mortality (IHM) was 6%, while median follow-up time was 6y, encompassing the following event rates: FUM, 36.9%; reinfarction, 19.4%; PCI, 21.1%; CABG, 2.3%; AHF, 16.6%. Uricemia was higher in males (p = 0.001) and in patients with hypertension (p < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (p = 0.009) and CKD (p < 0.001) and lower in patients with dyslipidemia (p = 0.031) and smokers (p = 0.03). Age and BMI displayed weak correlation with uricemia. Hyperuricemia had no effect on the burden of reinfaction, PCI and CABG. In a model of logistic regression including the above-mentioned CVRF, hyperuricemia was an independent predictor of IHM (p = 0.009, Hosmer-Lemeshow p = 0.685), FUM (p < 0.001, Hosmer-Lemeshow p = 0.056) and AHF (p = 0.001, Hosmer-Lemeshow p = 0.367). Conclusion: Hyperuricemia is an independent predictor of mortality and AHF in the setting of ACS.

Métodos: Análise dos procedimentos coronários efetuados entre 2004‐2013 com base num registo prospetivo, multicêntrico, voluntário, doente a doente – Registo Nacional de Cardiologia de Intervenção (RNCI) da Associação Portuguesa de Intervenção Cardiovascular da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cardiologia (APIC‐SPC) – e dos dados oficiais publicados pela Direção Geral de Saúde (DGS). Antioxidants have long been used in the cosmetic industry to prevent skin photoaging, which is mediated by oxidative stress, making the search for new antioxidant compounds highly desirable in this field. Naturally occurring xanthones are polyphenolic compounds that can be found in microorganisms, fungi, lichens, and some higher plants. This class of polyphenols has a privileged scaffold that grants them several biological activities. We have previously identified simple oxygenated xanthones as promising antioxidants and disclosed as hit, 1,2-dihydroxyxanthone (1). Herein, we synthesized and studied the potential of xanthones with different polyoxygenated patterns as skin antiphotoaging ingredients. In the DPPH antioxidant assay, two newly synthesized derivatives showed IC50 values in the same range as ascorbic acid. The synthesized xanthones were discovered to be excellent tyrosinase inhibitors and weak to moderate collagenase and elastase inhibitors but no activity was revealed against hyaluronidase. Their metal-chelating effect (FeCl3 and CuCl2) as well as their stability at different pH values were characterized to understand their potential to be used as future cosmetic active agents. Among the synthesized polyoxygenated xanthones, 1,2-dihydroxyxanthone (1) was reinforced as the most promising, exhibiting a dual ability to protect the skin against UV damage by combining antioxidant/metal-chelating properties with UV-filter capacity and revealed to be more stable in the pH range that is close to the pH of the skin. Lastly, the phototoxicity of 1,2-dihydroxyxanthone (1) was evaluated in a human keratinocyte cell line and no phototoxicity was observed in the concentration range tested.

Biotechnology uses microorganisms and/or enzymes to obtain specific products through fermentative processes and/or genetic engineering techniques. Examples of these products are active ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, kojic acid, resveratrol, and some enzymes, which are used in skin anti-aging products. In addition, certain growth factors, algae, stem cells, and peptides have been included in cosmetics and aesthetic medicines. Thus, biotechnology, cosmetics and aesthetic medicines are now closely linked, through the production of high-quality active ingredients, which are more effective and safer. This work describes the most used active ingredients that are produced from biotechnological processes. Although there are a vast number of active ingredients, the number of biotechnological active ingredients reported in the literature is not significantly high.

A estrutura cimentada e a “fábrica” dos solos residuais de granito tem uma forte influência no seu comportamento geomecânico. Alguns perfis típicos da área metropolitana do Porto foram intensamente estuda dos, incluindo campanhas exaustivas de ensaios in situ, tais como SPT, CPT, DP, PMT, SBPT, CH (ensaios sís micos) e PLT (com diferentes áreas de carga). A identificação das propriedades de deformabilidade para o dimen sionamento de obras geotécnicas a partir desses ensaios de campo é fortemente dependente de vários factores, dos quais o nível de deformação será abordado neste artigo. As particularidades estruturais destes solos residuais têm influência na sua tipologia comportamental comandada por uma lei constitutiva de singular não-linearidade. Os módulos de deformabilidade derivados de ensaios simples e robustos (tais como o SPT, CPT, DP ou inclusive o PMT) serão comparados com valores de referência determinados directamente em ensaios sísmicos (como o CH) ou em ensaios de carga (como o PLT) que, por serem directamente avaliados, os apelidaremos de “nobres”. Serão ainda situados nos níveis correspondentes de tensão-deformação e aferidos a partir de ensaios triaxiais em laboratório sobre amostras indeformadas de grande qualidade.
