La pandemia no solo ha supuesto una drástica reducción de la actividad, sino que ha generado una incertidumbre que tiene que reflejarse adecuadamente en la información divulgada, con más prudencia si cabe que en ejercicios anteriores. Al margen de cuestionar incluso el principio de empresa en funcionamiento, la situación sobrevenida por la COVID-19 ha tenido que afectar fundamentalmente a aquellas partidas de balance y cuenta de resultados que requieren la estimación de variables para su cuantificación, así como al contenido del informe de auditoría. Con esta premisa, este artículo pretende analizar el impacto inmediato en las cuentas anuales de la grave situación sanitaria y económica que se está atravesando y cuyas consecuencias últimas son difíciles de prever. Más concretamente, mediante índices de comparabilidad, el trabajo estudia las principales partidas de los estados financieros que han podido verse afectadas por el coronavirus, considerando además la relación de tales variaciones con otras variables como el sector, la opinión del auditor y el tamaño de la firma de auditoría.

Auditing is a collective process conducted by a professional accounting team with a wide range of skills and experience. Audit work is labor-intensive, and audit team diversity, particularly gender diversity, is considered to have both auditing and economic effects. However, there is scant empirical research on the way that audit engagements are conducted and the role of audit team leaders (ATLs), specifically female ATLs, in the audit effort, because they and other audit team members mainly develop audit strategies in practice during the planification period. A hand-collected private data set was gathered from Spanish small and medium-sized audit firms from 2001 to 2015. After controlling for endogeneity, the analysis shows a more efficient audit effort by female ATLs and their audit teams when task complexity increases. Furthermore, the findings show a masculinization process by female ATLs when their experience rises, which may be interpreted as intrinsic motivation for future promotions. Additional analyses also reveal differences in female ATLs’ behavior when there are shorter audit firm tenures and larger audit firm sizes. Overall, our empirical evidence is in line with the idea that gender diversity is positive for audit efficiency. Our study responds to calls from regulators to consider audit team attributes as a relevant factor in the quality of audit quality practices.

Estudios previos señalan la existencia de una relación entre la especialización del auditor y la calidad de la auditoría. A partir de esta idea, cuanto más importante sea la actividad de auditoría en el total del negocio de la firma auditora y mayor especialización exista en dicha actividad, el auditor firmante adoptará una postura más conservadora en la emisión de su informe. Utilizando la materialidad cuantitativa como subrogado de la calidad, se examina el efecto que los honorarios por otros servicios distintos a los de auditoría y el peso de los socios firmantes en la firma tienen sobre la cifra de materialidad. Partiendo de la materialidad real utilizada en cada uno de los encargos como medida de calidad de la auditoría y a través de una muestra de 995 clientes-año de compañías españolas no cotizadas, se concluye que una mayor dedicación a trabajos distintos a los de auditoría lleva al auditor a aplicar unas cifras de materialidad más altas. Los resultados también muestran que las firmas de auditoría usan materialidades más altas cuando los socios firmantes de la firma de auditoría ganan representación, reforzando la idea de un risky shift. Los hallazgos de este estudio son consistentes con la corriente de estudios que afirma que existen otros factores además de los cuantitativos que afectan a la fijación de la cifra de materialidad. Este trabajo contribuye a esta corriente mediante datos de archivo que reflejan el comportamiento del auditor durante la determinación de la cifra de materialidad cuantitativa y sus implicaciones en la divulgación de información financiera. Previous studies point out the existence of a relationship between auditor’s specialization and audit quality. Beginning with this idea, the more important the auditing activity is over the audit firm’s business and the greater specialization in such activity, the more conservative the signing auditor will be in the issuance of the audit report. Using the quantitative materiality as audit quality proxy, we examine the effect of consultancy services’ fees and the signing audit partners’ relevance on materiality values. From the hand-collected real amounts of quantitative materiality informed by 995 Spanish non-listed client-year sample, we conclude that more effort on consultancy services lead auditors to apply higher materiality numbers. Our results also show that audit firms employ higher materiality estimations when the signing audit partners gain importance within the audit firm, supporting the idea of a risky shift. Our findings are consistent with the mainstream that affirms there are other factors, beyond quantitative ones, that influence the determination of materiality amounts. This study contributes to the existing research by using archival data that mirrors auditors’ quantitative materiality judgements and its implication for financial reporting.

The aim of this study is to construct the assessment of the expected audit risk by the audit team leader (ATL) during the planification phase of the audit. The ATL plays an important role within the audit, and even more so regarding small and medium-sized (SME) audit firms. The audit risk assessment is critical as relying more (less) on internal controls implemented by the client leads to performing less (more) substantive audit procedures. This is determined by the ATL based on their professional judgement and previous experience. The use of fuzzy theory has powerful potential into the audit arena, as the audit risk assessment (outcome) is critically related to the auditors’ judgement and perception. We argue that ATL characteristics are core conditions in determining the audit risk assessment when planning. Using hand-collected and private data from Spanish SME audit firms, we find that a comprehensive set of conditions must be given for perceived high audit risk. The results indicate that female and inexperienced ATLs planning the audit of indebted firms with high proportions of capital assets, less profitability, and with a larger board sizes, as they are expected to have bad internal control. The same conditions are met when expecting errors, as well as shorter audit tenures. Finally, conditions such as the ATL’s experience gains importance in expecting irregularities. This paper extends our understanding of the role of ATL characteristics on the audit risk assessment when planning and raising awareness on studying SME audit firm behavior.

The role of e-learning in the existing and challenging educational era is crucial. However, it is necessary to overcome some drawbacks such as feelings of isolation and a lack of emotional contact. In this sense, emotion management is a key driver of student satisfaction in e-learning, which is significantly related to students’ motivation, learning, cognitive strategies, self-regulation, and personality antecedents in the classroom. This article examines an online postgraduate course in financial statements auditing, describing the resources used by the e-tutor to conduct affective tutorials, reduce students’ feelings of isolation, increase student involvement, and achieve success in e-learning. The results of a survey administered to 125 students over the period 2015 to 2020 indicate that students who receive emotional support have higher levels of satisfaction with the course in terms of all satisfaction indicators. In addition, female e-learning students are more satisfied with intensive e-tutor monitoring overall but are less gratified by non-face-to-face e-tools. Our study responds to the calls in the 2021–2027&nbsp, Digital Education Action Plan to improve and reset education and training for the digital age.

Cada vez resulta más importante la labor que las entidades sin fines lucrativos (ESFL) desarrollan en nuestro país y por ende su participación en la economía y el empleo nacional. A pesar de los cambios provocados por la última crisis económico-financiera que ha vivido la economía española, todavía sigue siendo un pilar fundamental para la subsistencia de estas entidades la percepción de subvenciones, especialmente de las Administraciones públicas. En el presente artículo se muestran cuáles son las principales problemáticas contables y los puntos clave de auditoría en las subvenciones de estas ESFL. El objetivo del presente trabajo ha sido realizar un minucioso estudio sobre las distintas problemáticas contables que surgen en el área de subvenciones (registro, valoración, imputación al excedente, etc.) y describir con detalle el proceso de auditoría de esta área desde el momento inicial de la planificación hasta la emisión del informe de auditoría. Tiene el claro propósito de colaborar a que estas ESFL puedan mejorar la confianza que la sociedad tiene en ellas a través de una más eficiente transmisión de información financiera, en cumplimiento del objetivo de una adecuada transparencia que se les demanda constantemente. El resultado es un trabajo que permite a los profesionales de contabilidad y auditoría tener una guía que a través de un gran número de casos prácticos les ayude a comprender y asimilar cómo se lleva a cabo la contabilidad y auditoría de un área tan importante para las ESFL como es el de las subvenciones, contribuyendo a facilitar la realización de una correcta presentación de la información financiera, la cual es transmitida a la sociedad y, por tanto, cumpliendo con los estándares de calidad y transparencia exigidos a los informes económico-financieros de cualquier entidad, sin que estas ESFL sean una excepción.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar si los auditores son capaces de detectar la gestión de resultados en sus empresas auditadas y si ante un incremento en el esfuerzo, el nivel de devengos discrecionales será menor. Como singular contribución, se mide el esfuerzo del auditor mediante las horas efectivamente empleadas, al contrario que trabajos anteriores que se basan en honorarios u horas estimadas o subrogados de estas. Asimismo, la muestra utilizada está compuesta por pequeñas y medianas firmas de auditoría, lo que le aporta un valor añadido por ser este segmento del mercado de auditoría más competitivo. Los resultados evidencian que el cliente reduce los devengos anormales positivos del resultado ante un incremento del esfuerzo del auditor, poniendo así en valor su figura como garante de la información financiera, contribuyendo al debate sobre la calidad de las pequeñas firmas. En lo que respecta a los ajustes por devengo negativos, se puede interpretar una pasividad del auditor ante el conservadurismo contable y un efecto aprendizaje en el cliente, que aumenta la manipulación negativa de resultados conforme se incrementa la duración contractual con el auditor. The objective of this paper is to analyze if small and medium auditors are able to detect the earning managments in their audited companies and, in that case, if the increase of the audit effort produces a lower level of discretionary accruals. As a particular contribution, the auditor's effort has been measured through the hours actually spent, unlike previous work based on estimated or subrogated fees or hours. Similarly, the sample used is composed of small and medium-sized audit firms, which gives added value for this segment of the most competitive audit market. The results show that the client reduces the positive abnormal accruals if the audit effort increases, thus valuing his figure as guarantor of the financial information, contributing to the debate on the quality of small firms. Regarding the negative accrual adjustments, it could be interpreted as an auditor passivity against the accounting conservatism and a learning effect on the client, which increases the negative discretional accruals as the contractual relationship with the auditor increases.

Este estudio investiga la aplicación, por parte de las socias auditoras, de una prima de riesgo en las auditoras españolas de pequeñas y medianas empresas como herramienta de cobertura. Mediante técnicas econométricas se ha realizado un análisis univariante y multivariante a 2.536 observaciones de clientes auditados por veintiuna firmas de auditoría de pequeña y media dimensión durante el periodo 2002 y 2014. Los resultados sugieren que las empresas auditadas pagan unas tarifas de auditoría más altas cuando el informe de auditoría es firmado por una mujer. La evidencia combinada en este estudio sugiere la existencia de una prima de riesgo femenina. Esta prima en los honorarios puede existir por las diferencias de género existentes a la hora de percibir y tolerar el riesgo. A diferencia de estudios anteriores se controla el esfuerzo del auditor a través de las horas dedicadas en cada uno de los trabajos, centrando el análisis en el segmento de pequeñas y medianas firmas de auditoría. This study investigates the application by auditor women of a risk premium in Spanish audit firms of SME companies as a hedging tool. Using econometric models, it has been developed univariate and multivariate analysis over 2,536 observations of clients audited by twenty one small and medium-sized audit firms for the period of 2002 to 2012. In short, the results suggest that the audited companies pay higher tariffs audit when the audit report is signed by a woman. The combined evidence in this study suggests the existence of a female risk premium. This premium in fees may exist due to gender differences existing when perceiving and tolerating risk. Unlike previous studies, the audit effort has been controlled by the hours dedicated to each of the works and focused the analysis on the segment of SME audit firms.

RESUMENEl objetivo de este estudio es analizar en una muestra de pequenos y medianos auditores espanoles si los precios que cargan a su cliente por la prestacion de su servicio cubren el riesgo de negocios. De acuerdo al modelo de precios definido por Simunic (1980), el precio de la auditoria es funcion del esfuerzo y del perfil de riesgo del cliente. En este estudio utilizamos diversos subrogados para inferir el riesgo de mercado percibido por el auditor en su cliente, tal como son el riesgo financiero del cliente y el nivel de riesgo de auditoria. Al objeto de verificar la cuestion de investigacion de si los pequenos y medianos auditores cargan primas para cubrir el riesgo de negocios que soportan, en este trabajo se utilizan datos de 607 empresas, usando datos de honorarios para el periodo 2001–2009.
