Nowadays, huge quantities of oily wastewater and oily solid wastes are associated with different industrial activities, which not only may harm the environment and human health but also a performance worsening of the installation. The goal of this study was to establish a resilient approach to cope with oily waste generation in industrial facilities. Several lessons learned from Cuban installations studied separately for ten years in the municipality of Cienfuegos were the cornerstone for the model definition. The approach included the development of a novel methodology to address integrated features of loss prevention in the operation of petroleum transport, storage, process, handling, and use. This methodology was designed and improved using the principle of convergence to integrate engineering procedures, standards, technical and management tools. The results from the methodology implementation generated a list of findings translated into industrial failures modes, that can impact both environment and human health. Then, a set of general and specific causes associated including the incidence of the natural events were deployed in different orders. The environmental monitoring around the plants offered a significant sample of points that allowed the spatial representation of how hydrocarbon pollution constitutes a complex network of permanent stress rooted in the territory of Cienfuegos. Moreover, a package of inherently safer solutions was generated as primary prevention, integrating the waste management hierarchy concept. At last, this iterative approach generated a research project to develop a bioremediation technique for the treatment of oily sludge from maintenance operations, which can be neither eliminated for the inherently safer solutions nor disposed to the environment. The lessons learned from Cuban installations enabled the conception of this resilient approach, which represents a framework to improve industrial safety performances contributing to the release reduction of oily waste. In addition, it represents a contribution to increasing the awareness of industrial vulnerabilities in the territorial resilience analysis.

The purpose of this study was to determine PM2.5 mass concentration and the contents of trace elements and water-soluble ions in samples collected inside the Metropolitan area of Huancayo. Four monitoring stations were installed at three urban areas (UNCP, HYO, and CHI) and one rural (IGP). The sampling campaign was carried out from March 2017 to November 2017. The PM2.5 content was determined by gravimetric method, and fifteen trace elements (TE) and seven water-soluble ions were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS), and ion chromatography (IC), respectively. Datasets were assessed by one ANOVA test to detect significant differences among monitoring station. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied for source identification. The mean annual concentration of PM2.5 mass concentrations has ranged (average) from 3.4 to 36.8 µg/m3 (16.6 ± 6.8 µg/m3) for the monitoring stations under study. The annual World Health Organization thresholds and national air quality standards were exceeded. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between most trace elements at urban and rural areas. PCA and HCA illustrated that the most important sources of traces element originated of natural origin (soil re-suspension) and vehicular sources (fuel combustion, abrasion of vehicles tires, wear car components).

La resistencia a la insulina, un estado de disminución de la respuesta biológica fisiológica a las concentraciones de insulina, es un componente clave de este síndrome y parece ser el resultado de un defecto primario en el músculo esquelético transportador de la glucosa. La enfermedad aguda y el período perioperatorio se caracterizan por un estado de resistencia a la insulina que se manifiesta como hiperglucemia y da lugar a varias otras alteraciones metabólicas y bioquímicas que afectan negativamente la función final de órganos. La hiperglicemia en pacientes gravemente enfermos afecta negativamente los resultados. El logro de euglucemia parece ser beneficioso en determinadas situaciones clínicas, pero existe desacuerdo en relación con el objetivo de glucemia ideal, la duración de la terapia, y la modalidad. La farmacoterapia, el ejercicio y la nutrición para mejorar la sensibilidad a la insulina parecen prometedores, pero requieren una mayor evaluación para confirmar su eficacia perioperatoria para la reducción de riesgos. Esta revisión analiza las implicaciones clínicas del síndrome metabólico y la resistencia a la insulina en el entorno del paciente sometido a anestesia y cirugía con un énfasis en las estrategias de modulación. La incidencia de reestenosis luego de endarterectomías carotídeas es muy baja, oscilando entre 1.2% y 3.6%, en plazos de 7 meses a 2 años. En un 25% de los mismos se encontró hiperplasia intima!. El presente trabajo experimental pretende un triple objetivo: a) crear un modelo de estenosis carotídea en el perro, b) estudiar dos modalidades de angioplastia (vena y polltetrafluoretlleno) y c) esclarecer el mecanismo lesiona! que provoca estenosis. En base a los resultados evolutivos .y comproba• ciones anatomopatológlcas, se hacen consideraciones respecto al empleo de los mismos en arterias de mediano y pequeño calibre.

Se realiza un estudio comparativo entre dos series de 10 perros cada una, a los que se les provocó pancreatitis aguda mediante traumatismo directo del parénquima pancreático. Una serie se deja evolucionar espontáneamente y a la otra se le inyecta Ethibloc en los conductos excretores pancreáticos. Ambas series son comparadas del punto de vista bioquímico (amilasemia y glícemia) y anátomo-patológico en el momento de la necropsia y además mediante biopsia pancreática en el momento de la inyección de los conductos. Se obtienen como resultados un mejor porcentaje de sobrevida y una regresión de las lesiones anátomopatológicas de pancreatitis en la serie inyectada.
