Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) is a quite rare tumor outside Eastern countries. This rarity, together with a wide histological appearance, makes its correct identification a diagnostic challenge for pathologists under the microscope. Historically, PSP was considered a vascular-derived neoplasm (sclerosing hemangioma), but its immunohistochemical profile clearly supports its epithelial origin. No specific molecular fingerprint has been detected so far. This short narrative revisits the clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and molecular aspects of this tumor, paying special attention to some controversial points still not well clarified, i.e., clinical aggressiveness and metastatic spread, multifocality, the supposed development of sarcomatoid change in a subset of cases, and tumor associations with lung adenocarcinoma and/or well-differentiated neuroendocrine hyperplasia/tumors. The specific diagnostic difficulties on fine-needle aspiration cytology/biopsy and perioperative frozen sections are also highlighted. Finally, a teaching case of tumor concurrence of lung adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine lesions, and PSP, paradigmatic of tumor association in this context, is also presented.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors in combination with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are improving the response rates of advanced renal cancer patients. However, many treated patients do not respond, making novel immune checkpoint-based immunotherapies potentially clinically beneficial only for specific groups of patients. We detected high expression of the immune checkpoint protein B7-H3 in clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCCs) and evaluated B7-H3 immunohistochemistry staining in tissue microarray samples from two distinct renal cancer cohorts. B7-H3 was highly expressed in approximately 50% of primary tumors and in 30% of metastatic lesions. B7-H3 expression in primary tumors correlated with tumor necrosis, sarcomatoid transformation, disease-free survival, and synchronous metastasis, while B7-H3 expression in metastasis correlated with metastases to the lymph nodes. Gene expression analysis revealed the association of B7-H3 expression with gene expression scores involved in T cell exhaustion and myeloid immune evasion, as well as with PI3K/AKT and JAK/STAT pathways. Furthermore, knocking down B7-H3 expression in renal cancer cells by siRNA and CRISPR/Cas resulted in lower 2D and 3D cell proliferation and viability as well as increased sensitivity to TKI axitinib. Together, our findings suggest a pro-oncogenic and immune evasive role for B7-H3 in ccRCC and highlight B7-H3 as an actionable novel immune checkpoint protein in combination with TKI in advanced renal cancer.

The correct diagnosis of mesothelial proliferations is a classic problem for pathologists, and one which has important clinical implications. A significant number of such cases appear associated with recurrent hydrocele, as an irritative/reactive response to this condition. The morphological spectrum of mesothelial lesions in this topography is broad, and a set of benign conditions may appear, sometimes with florid gross features and cytologic pseudo-atypia. Here, we present two different examples in which malignancy was initially considered in the differential diagnosis.

Sunitinib has greatly improved the survival of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients in recent years. However, 20–30% of treated patients do not respond. To identify miRNAs and genes associated with a response, comparisons were made between biopsies from responder and non-responder ccRCC patients. Using integrated transcriptomic analyses, we identified 37 miRNAs and 60 respective target genes, which were significantly associated with the NF-kappa B, PI3K-Akt and MAPK pathways. We validated expression of the miRNAs (miR-223, miR-155, miR-200b, miR-130b) and target genes (FLT1, PRDM1 and SAV1) in 35 ccRCC patients. High levels of miR-223 and low levels of FLT1, SAV1 and PRDM1 were associated with worse overall survival (OS), and combined miR-223 + SAV1 levels distinguished responders from non-responders (AUC = 0.92). Using immunohistochemical staining of 170 ccRCC patients, VEGFR1 (FLT1) expression was associated with treatment response, histological grade and RECIST (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors) score, whereas SAV1 and BLIMP1 (PRDM1) were associated with metachronous metastatic disease. Using in situ hybridisation (ISH) to detect miR-155 we observed higher tumoural cell expression in non-responders, and non-tumoural cell expression with increased histological grade. In summary, our preliminary analysis using integrated miRNA-target gene analyses identified several novel biomarkers in ccRCC patients that surely warrant further investigation.

Abstract Background The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of radiomics predictions for a range of molecular, genomic and clinical targets in patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and demonstrate the impact of novel feature selection strategies and sub-segmentations on model interpretability. Methods Contrast-enhanced CT scans from the first 101 patients recruited to the TRACERx Renal Cancer study (NCT03226886) were used to derive radiomics classification models to predict 20 molecular, histopathology and clinical target variables. Manual 3D segmentation was used in conjunction with automatic sub-segmentation to generate radiomics features from the core, rim, high and low enhancing sub-regions, and the whole tumour. Comparisons were made between two classification model pipelines: a Conventional pipeline reflecting common radiomics practice, and a Proposed pipeline including two novel feature selection steps designed to improve model interpretability. For both pipelines nested cross-validation was used to estimate prediction performance and tune model hyper-parameters, and permutation testing was used to evaluate the statistical significance of the estimated performance measures. Further model robustness assessments were conducted by evaluating model variability across the cross-validation folds. Results Classification performance was significant (p 0.1. Five of these targets (necrosis on histology, presence of renal vein invasion, overall histological stage, linear evolutionary subtype and loss of 9p21.3 somatic alteration marker) had AUROC > 0.8. Models derived using the Proposed pipeline contained fewer feature groups than the Conventional pipeline, leading to more straightforward model interpretations without loss of performance. Sub-segmentations lead to improved performance and/or improved interpretability when predicting the presence of sarcomatoid differentiation and tumour stage. Conclusions Use of the Proposed pipeline, which includes the novel feature selection methods, leads to more interpretable models without compromising prediction performance. Abstract Renal cancer cells constitute a paradigm of tumor cells with a glycolytic reprogramming which drives metabolic alterations favouring cell survival and transformation. We studied the expression and activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDK1-4), key enzymes of the energy metabolism, in renal cancer cells. We analysed the expression, subcellular distribution and clinicopathological correlations of PDK1-4 by immunohistochemistry of tumor tissue microarray samples from a cohort of 96 clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients. Gene expression analysis was performed on whole tumor tissue sections of a subset of ccRCC samples. PDK2 and PDK3 protein expression in tumor cells correlated with lower patient overall survival, whereas PDK1 protein expression correlated with higher patient survival. Gene expression analysis revealed molecular association of PDK2 and PDK3 expression with PI3K signalling pathway, as well as with T cell infiltration and exhausted CD8 T cells. Inhibition of PDK by dichloroacetate in human renal cancer cell lines resulted in lower cell viability, which was accompanied by an increase in pAKT. Together, our findings suggest a differential role for PDK enzymes in ccRCC progression, and highlight PDK as actionable metabolic proteins in relation with PI3K signalling and exhausted CD8 T cells in ccRCC.

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare event which it is specifically up to pathologists to bring to light correctly. The histological identification of such tumor-to-tumor cases is simple when the respective histologies are different but can be problematic if the case includes two carcinomas with similar cytoarchitecture viewed one inside the other under the microscope. We report four cases of this condition in which clear cell renal cell carcinoma is involved, either as a receptor or as a donor, and remark on the difficulties in recognizing some of them. Appropriate clinical–pathological correlation, including a review of the patient’s antecedents and radiological exams, would be a great help in routinely identifying tumor-to-tumor metastases.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) ranks among the most prevalent malignancies in Western countries, marked by its notable heterogeneity, which contributes to an unpredictable clinical trajectory. The insufficiency of dependable biomarkers adds complexity to assessing this tumor progression. Imbalances of several components of the intrarenal renin–angiotensin system (iRAS) significantly impact patient prognoses and responses to first-line immunotherapies. In this study, we analyzed the immunohistochemical expression of the Mas-related G-protein-coupled receptor D (MrgD), which recognizes the novel RAS peptide alamandine (ALA), in a series of 87 clear cell renal cell (CCRCCs), 19 papillary (PRCC), 7 chromophobe (ChRCC) renal cell carcinomas, and 11 renal oncocytomas (RO). MrgD was expressed in all the renal tumor subtypes, with a higher mean staining intensity in the PRCCs, ChRCCs, and ROs. A high expression of MrgD at the tumor center and at the infiltrative front of CCRCC tissues was significantly associated with a high histological grade, large tumor diameter, local invasion, and locoregional node and distant metastasis. Patients with worse 5-year cancer-specific survival and a poorer response to antiangiogenic tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) showed higher MrgD expression at the center of their primary tumors. These findings suggest a possible role of MrgD in renal carcinogenetic processes. Further studies are necessary to unveil its potential as a novel biomarker for CCRCC prognosis and response to frontline therapies.

Cancer is an ecosystem whose intrinsic mechanisms do not show up under the microscope of pathologists. However, the information provided by pathologists is absolutely necessary for the correct implementation of personalized treatments. This short paper seeks to analyze this apparent paradox, i.e. static snapshots for making crucial decisions in essentially dynamic diseases, taking clear cell renal cell carcinoma as a paradigmatic example of tumor variability. We seek to call the attention of pathologists and other cancer-related medical specialists to extend knowledge of the evolutionary features of the disease to help obtain a better understanding of why cancer behaves as it does.

A 26-year-old man with symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection developed a sudden-onset acute testicular pain. The echo-doppler images showed massive testicular infarction, so orchiectomy was performed. On gross examination, the surgical specimen showed complete testicular necrosis and diffuse thickening of the testicular coverings. Under the microscope, a severe obliterative arteritis was evidenced. SARS-CoV-2 spike antibody was detected by immunohistochemistry in the arterial endothelium. Electron microscopy displayed intracytoplasmic spiky viral particles in endothelial cells. The patient was treated with corticoids and was asymptomatic at last contact.

A broad spectrum of lesions, including hyperplastic, metaplastic, inflammatory, infectious, and reactive, may mimic cancer all along the urinary tract. This narrative collects most of them from a clinical and pathologic perspective, offering urologists and general pathologists their most salient definitory features. Together with classical, well-known, entities such as urothelial papillomas (conventional (UP) and inverted (IUP)), nephrogenic adenoma (NA), polypoid cystitis (PC), fibroepithelial polyp (FP), prostatic-type polyp (PP), verumontanum cyst (VC), xanthogranulomatous inflammation (XI), reactive changes secondary to BCG instillations (BCGitis), schistosomiasis (SC), keratinizing desquamative squamous metaplasia (KSM), post-radiation changes (PRC), vaginal-type metaplasia (VM), endocervicosis (EC)/endometriosis (EM) (müllerianosis), malakoplakia (MK), florid von Brunn nest proliferation (VB), cystitis/ureteritis cystica (CC), and glandularis (CG), among others, still other cellular proliferations with concerning histological features and poorly understood etiopathogenesis like IgG4-related disease (IGG4), PEComa (PEC), and pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferations (post-operative spindle cell nodule (POS), inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT)), are reviewed. Some of these diagnoses are problematic for urologists, other for pathologists, and still others for both. Interestingly, the right identification of their definitory features will allow their correct diagnoses, thus, avoiding overtreatment. The literature selected for this review also focuses on the immunohistochemical and/or molecular data useful to delineate prognosis.

BackgroundPyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) complex converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA by pyruvate decarboxylation, which drives energy metabolism during cell growth, including prostate cancer (PCa) cell growth. The major catalytic subunit of PDH, PDHA1, is regulated by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation by pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDKs) and pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatases (PDPs). There are four kinases, PDK1, PDK2, PDK3 and PDK4, which can phosphorylate and inactivate PDH; and two phosphatases, PDP1 and PDP2, that dephosphorylate and activate PDH.MethodsWe have analyzed by immunohistochemistry the expression and clinicopathological correlations of PDHA1, PDP1, PDP2, PDK1, PDK2, PDK3, and PDK4, as well as of androgen receptor (AR), in a retrospective PCa cohort of patients. A total of 120 PCa samples of representative tumor areas from all patients were included in tissue microarray (TMA) blocks for analysis. In addition, we studied the subcellular localization of PDK2 and PDK3, and the effects of the PDK inhibitor dichloroacetate (DCA) in the growth, proliferation, and mitochondrial respiration of PCa cells.ResultsWe found heterogeneous expression of the PDH complex components in PCa tumors. PDHA1, PDP1, PDK1, PDK2, and PDK4 expression correlated positively with AR expression. A significant correlation of PDK2 immunostaining with biochemical recurrence and disease-free survival was revealed. In PCa tissue specimens, PDK2 displayed cytoplasmic and nuclear immunostaining, whereas PDK1, PDK3 and PDK4 showed mostly cytoplasmic staining. In cells, ectopically expressed PDK2 and PDK3 were mainly localized in mitochondria compartments. An increase in maximal mitochondrial respiration was observed in PCa cells upon PDK inhibition by DCA, in parallel with less proliferative capacity.ConclusionOur findings support the notion that expression of specific PDH complex components is related with AR signaling in PCa tumors. Furthermore, PDK2 expression associated with poor PCa prognosis. This highlights a potential for PDH complex components as targets for intervention in PCa.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) are a cellular compartment of the tumor microenvironment (TME) with critical roles in tumor development. Fibroblast activation protein-α (FAP) is one of the proteins expressed by CAF and its immunohistochemical detection in routine practice is associated with tumor aggressiveness and shorter patient survival. For these reasons, FAP seems a good prognostic marker in many malignant neoplasms, including renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The start point of this Perspective paper is to review the role of CAF in the modulation of renal cell carcinoma evolution. In this sense, CAF have demonstrated to develop important protumor and/or antitumor activities. This apparent paradox suggests that some type of temporally or spatially-related specialization is present in this cellular compartment during tumor evolution. The end point is to remark that tumor/non-tumor cell interactions, in particular the symbiotic tumor/CAF connections, are permanent and ever-changing crucial phenomena along tumor lifetime. Interestingly, these interactions may be responsible of many therapeutic failures. Abstract Background Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) regulate neuronal differentiation and survival, but their expression patterns and functions in human neuroblastoma (NB) are scarcely known. Here, we have investigated the function and expression of the non-receptor PTPN1 on human NB cell lines and human NB tumor samples. Material/methods NB tumor samples from 44 patients were analysed by immunohistochemistry using specific antibodies against PTPN1, PTPRH, PTPRZ1, and PTEN. PTPN1 knock-down, cell proliferation and tyrosine phosphorylation analyses, and RT-qPCR mRNA expression was assessed on SH-SY5Y, SMS-KCNR, and IMR-32 human NB cell lines. Results Knock-down of PTPN1 in SH-SY5Y NB cells resulted in increased tyrosine phosphorylation and cell proliferation. Retinoic acid-mediated differentiation of NB cell lines did not affect PTPN1 mRNA expression, as compared with other PTPs. Importantly, PTPN1 displayed high expression on NB tumors in association with metastasis and poor prognosis. Conclusions Our results identify PTPN1 as a candidate regulator of NB cell growth and a potential NB prognostic biomarker.

Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer intimately related with early development and differentiation of neuroendocrine cells, and constitutes one of the pediatric cancers with higher incidence and mortality. Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are key regulators of cell growth and differentiation by their direct effect on tyrosine dephosphorylation of specific protein substrates, exerting major functions in the modulation of intracellular signaling during neuron development in response to external cues driving cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation. We review here the current knowledge on the role of PTPs in neuroblastoma cell growth, survival, and differentiation. The potential of PTPs as biomarkers and molecular targets for inhibition in neuroblastoma therapies is discussed.

The capacity to learn new efficient systemic behavior is a fundamental issue of contemporary biology. We have recently observed, in a preliminary analysis, the emergence of conditioned behavior in some individual amoebae cells. In these experiments, cells were able to acquire new migratory patterns and remember them for long periods of their cellular cycle, forgetting them later on. Here, following a similar conceptual framework of Pavlov’s experiments, we have exhaustively studied the migration trajectories of more than 2000 individual cells belonging to three different species: Amoeba proteus, Metamoeba leningradensis, and Amoeba borokensis. Fundamentally, we have analyzed several relevant properties of conditioned cells, such as the intensity of the responses, the directionality persistence, the total distance traveled, the directionality ratio, the average speed, and the persistence times. We have observed that cells belonging to these three species can modify the systemic response to a specific stimulus by associative conditioning. Our main analysis shows that such new behavior is very robust and presents a similar structure of migration patterns in the three species, which was characterized by the presence of conditioning for long periods, remarkable straightness in their trajectories and strong directional persistence. Our experimental and quantitative results, compared with other studies on complex cellular responses in bacteria, protozoa, fungus-like organisms and metazoans that we discus here, allow us to conclude that cellular associative conditioning might be a widespread characteristic of unicellular organisms. This new systemic behavior could be essential to understand some key principles involved in increasing the cellular adaptive fitness to microenvironments.

Associative memory is the main type of learning by which complex organisms respond to certain environmental stimuli. Here, De la Fuente et al. describe a motility pattern consistent with associative conditioned behaviour in unicellular amoebae.

One of the main aims of current biology is to understand the origin of the molecular organization that underlies the complex dynamic architecture of cellular life. Here, we present an overview of the main sources of biomolecular order and complexity spanning from the most elementary levels of molecular activity to the emergence of cellular systemic behaviors. First, we have addressed the dissipative self-organization, the principal source of molecular order in the cell. Intensive studies over the last four decades have demonstrated that self-organization is central to understand enzyme activity under cellular conditions, functional coordination between enzymatic reactions, the emergence of dissipative metabolic networks (DMN), and molecular rhythms. The second fundamental source of order is molecular information processing. Studies on effective connectivity based on transfer entropy (TE) have made possible the quantification in bits of biomolecular information flows in DMN. This information processing enables efficient self-regulatory control of metabolism. As a consequence of both main sources of order, systemic functional structures emerge in the cell; in fact, quantitative analyses with DMN have revealed that the basic units of life display a global enzymatic structure that seems to be an essential characteristic of the systemic functional metabolism. This global metabolic structure has been verified experimentally in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Here, we also discuss how the study of systemic DMN, using Artificial Intelligence and advanced tools of Statistic Mechanics, has shown the emergence of Hopfield-like dynamics characterized by exhibiting associative memory. We have recently confirmed this thesis by testing associative conditioning behavior in individual amoeba cells. In these Pavlovian-like experiments, several hundreds of cells could learn new systemic migratory behaviors and remember them over long periods relative to their cell cycle, forgetting them later. Such associative process seems to correspond to an epigenetic memory. The cellular capacity of learning new adaptive systemic behaviors represents a fundamental evolutionary mechanism for cell adaptation.

Aim of study: This study assesses acute stress by measuring, through infrared thermography in summer and winter, the temperature of the eye, outer ear, inner ear and nose in 40 fattening rabbits before and after handling. Area of study: Seville (Spain). Material and methods: Body thermographic temperatures were recorded during a 38-day fattening period twice weekly and twice a day, before and after the handler held the rabbits in their arms for one minute. Ambient temperature and relative humidity were also recorded, and their influence on body temperatures was assessed. For each anatomical part, the variation of the temperature between the handled and undisturbed rabbit, and the differential temperature between the anatomical part in the undisturbed rabbit and the ambient temperature were calculated. Main results: The variation in temperatures between handled and undisturbed rabbits ranged from 0.25±0.041 ºC for eye to 3.09±0.221 ºC for outer ear in summer and -0.41±0.182 ºC for nose to 2.09±0.178 ºC for outer ear in winter. The day of the fattening period influenced all the temperature traits during summer and winter, except for the inner ear in winter. In summer, unlike winter, the temperature variation at the end of fattening period between handled and undisturbed rabbits was lower than at weaning (-0.04 to 1.94 ºC vs. 0.54 to 5.52 ºC, respectively). The temperatures in undisturbed rabbits were correlated with ambient temperature. Research highlights: Measuring body temperature with infrared thermography is a useful tool to evaluate acute stress in handled rabbits, with the inner ear and eye the most reliable body parts for measuring it.

(1) Background: Renal cancer is one of the most frequent malignancies in Western countries, with an unpredictable clinical outcome, partly due to its high heterogeneity and the scarcity of reliable biomarkers of tumour progression. (Pro)renin receptor (PRR) is a novel receptor of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) that has been associated with the development and progression of some solid tumours by RAS-dependent and -independent mechanisms. (2) Methods: In this study, we analysed the immunohistochemical expression of PRR at the centre and border in a series of 83 clear-cell renal cell (CCRCCs), 19 papillary (PRCC) and 7 chromophobe (ChRCC) renal cell carcinomas, and the benign tumour renal oncocytoma (RO, n = 11). (3) Results: PRR is expressed in all the tumour subtypes, with higher mean staining intensity in ChRCCs and ROs. A high expression of PRR at the tumour centre and at the infiltrative front of CCRCC tissues is significantly associated with high grade, tumour diameter, local invasion and stage, and with high mortality risk by UCLA integrated staging system (UISS) scale. (4) Conclusions: These findings indicate that PRR is associated with the development and progression of renal tumours. Its potential as a novel biomarker for RCC diagnosis/prognosis and as a promising therapeutic target should be taken into account in the future.

Este trabajo es parte de la revisión documental que se hizo como eje central del marco de referencia que se formuló en el proyecto “sistemas de producción integral”. Es un proyecto multidisciplinario e interinstitucional: en que colaboran varios investigadores, con la finalidad revisar y discutir las alternativas de producción, que permitan una visión global sobre los sistemas alternativos de producción en el campo del estado. Ponemos en la mesa de debates algunas de las corrientes e investigaciones que se han estado haciendo sobre los dos polos actuales en la agricultura, la moderna versus la orgánica. Metodológicamente se hizo al inicio un diagnóstico comunitario para recoger las necesidades de los productores y a la vez identificar la problemática existente desde su propia experiencia y sean ellos los que dicten lo que se va a realizar, siendo nuestra función la de canalizar las tareas entre los responsables del proyecto y el grupo de colaboradores. Aquí se presenta la parte de discusión sobre la agricultura orgánica y la moderna o industrial, poniendo como situación problemática, si la salud pública es responsabilidad única de las actividades de la modernización de la agricultura. Se demuestra en esta revisión que es la agricultura industrial la causante del deterioro ambiental y de la salud de la población y de los seres vivos en general, presentándose la actividad productiva orgánica como la alternativa saludable en el futuro inmediato que conlleve a la sustentabilidad.

Dual-specificity phosphatases (DUSPs) are important regulators of neuronal cell growth and differentiation by targeting proteins essential to neuronal survival in signaling pathways, among which the MAP kinases (MAPKs) stand out. DUSPs include the MAPK phosphatases (MKPs), a family of enzymes that directly dephosphorylate MAPKs, as well as the small-size atypical DUSPs, a group of low molecular-weight enzymes which display more heterogeneous substrate specificity. Neuroblastoma (NB) is a malignancy intimately associated with the course of neuronal and neuroendocrine cell differentiation, and constitutes the source of more common extracranial solid pediatric tumors. Here, we review the current knowledge on the involvement of MKPs and small-size atypical DUSPs in NB cell growth and differentiation, and discuss the potential of DUSPs as predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets in human NB.

Current standard-of-care tumor sampling protocols for CCRCC (and other cancers) are not efficient at detecting intratumoural heterogeneity (ITH). We have demonstrated in silico that an alternative protocol, multi-site tumor sampling (MSTS) based upon the divide and conquer (DAC) algorithm, can significantly increase the efficiency of ITH detection without extra costs. Now we test this protocol on routine hematoxylin-eosin (HE) sections in a series of 38 CCRCC cases. MSTS was found to outperform traditional sampling when detecting either high grade (p=0.0136) or granular/eosinophilic cells (p=0.0114). We therefore propose that MSTS should be used in routine clinical practice.

We have demonstrated in silico that an alternative protocol, multi-site tumor sampling (MSTS) based upon the divide and conquer (DAC) algorithm, can significantly increase the efficiency of ITH detection without extra costs. Now we test this protocol on routine hematoxylin-eosin (HE) sections in a series of 38 CCRCC cases. MSTS was found to outperform traditional sampling when detecting either high grade (p=0.0136) or granular/eosinophilic cells (p=0.0114). We therefore propose that MSTS should be used in routine clinical practice.

A multifocal biphasic squamoid alveolar renal cell carcinoma in a 68-year-old man is reported. Four different peripheral tumor nodules were identified on gross examination. A fifth central tumor corresponded to a conventional clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Biphasic squamoid alveolar renal cell carcinoma is a rare tumor that has been very recently characterized as a distinct histotype within the spectrum of papillary renal cell carcinoma. Immunostaining with cyclin D1 seems to be specific of this tumor subtype. This is the first reported case with multifocal presentation.
