This article presents the results of applying three archaeometric techniques in archaeological ceramics from the upper river Madeira region in Amazonia. The first consists of the nuclear technique, neutron activation analysis (INAA), to identify the trace elements of the clay sources used in the production of the vessels. The second, non-nuclear X-ray diffraction (XRD), was used to characterise the mineral phases of each clay source. The third technique, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), estimated burning temperature related to the production stage of the artefacts. This approach made it possible to understand technological choices linked to selecting specific clay sources. The results suggest that different indigenous groups that inhabited the region between 940 and 760 B.P selected three clay sources to produce their vessels.

The radiation study has led to advances in various areas of our everyday lives despite that several events had occurred, causing health damage to several researchers. Thus, if somebody wants to study irradiation effects on materials must use equipment that quantifies the radiation received. Dosimeters do this quantification of ionizing radiation. There are numerous applications for ionizing radiation so far, and many materials can be used for dosimetric purposes. Despite that, there is always a constant search for new materials, focusing on more efficient processes or less environmental impact. For dosimetric purposes, the material has to be radiation sensitive. Many materials have been the subject of research recently, aiming to be environment friendly: among them, we can mention biopolymers that have the great advantage of being biodegradable. A commercial solid-state dosimeter uses silver-activated phosphate glass for radiophotoluminescence (RPL) purposes. This dosimeter has an enormous advantage since it does not lose the dose information after dose reading. It can be reread many times until annealing is done to reset the exposure condition. It can be reused several times. This dosimeter is commercially available as “GD-450” (Chiyoda Technol Corporation). Our research group successfully proposed using silicate glass instead of phosphate glass as RPL dosimeters. Face to the need for a high-temperature furnace for glass sintering, and it was decided to test biopolymers as RPL dosimeters. Once our goal was to have a regenerative dosimeter, we used silver as a sensible radiation element. This work it was synthesized two biopolymers with and without adding silver to them. The biopolymers synthesized used starch and collagen as polymer base material. The biopolymers analysis was done by microscopy and by optical spectrometry (UV-Vis-NIR). We observed irradiation effects on absorption bands from biopolymer of collagen doped with silver.

International audience; Golden grass is a vegetal fiber used in arts and crafts for its peculiar optical properties, namely, its shiny golden-like reflectivity. Since vegetal fiber structure is usually heterogeneous, complementary techniques have been used to understand the electronic properties of the external and core regions of golden grass fibers. The composition and dielectric function of the few nanometer-thick external surfaces has been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy loss spectroscopy (XPS-PEELS), while a comparison of vibrational and optical properties of the few-micron-thick external and fiber core regions was derived from Raman, optical, photoluminescence (PL) and photoacoustic (PAS) spectroscopies. Raman signature and valence-band distribution indicate that the internal and external parts of the fibers are made of some oxygen-depleted lignin-like carbonaceous material. Besides a plasmon peak at 21 eV, two main absorption bands at 3.7 eV and 8.2 eV have been identified as π−π* and σ−σ* electronic transitions at aromatic moieties. PL excitation and emission behavior confirm heterogeneous molecular structures at the core and external regions. Specular reflectance spectra calculated from the complex refractive index (derived from XPS-PEELS) do not explain the shiny golden-like aspect of golden grass, which may arise from diffuse reflectance within a collection of heterogeneous hollow fibers.

Neste trabalho é apresentado o estudo teórico-experimental a respeito das propriedades piezoresistivas de dois tipos de materiais com estrutura amorfa. O primeiro material estudado é o carbono semelhante ao diamante e o segundo é o óxido de estanho dopado com índio. O estudo compreende o levantamento bibliográfico sobre os materiais, projeto teórico e prático de estruturas individuais de testes e piezoresistores configurados em ponte completa, além da realização das caracterizações elétricas, mecânicas e térmicas de acordo com um arranjo experimental proposto. As caracterizações experimentais foram implementadas usando a técnica de flexão de uma viga engastada e a teoria das pequenas deflexões. Os diferentes materiais caracterizados e analisados apresentaram o efeito piezoresistivo e um sinal de sensibilidade mecânica condizente com as características esperadas para estes filmes. Ambos os filmes respondem as variações da temperatura de forma linear e apresentam uma direção de dependência com a temperatura. Os filmes de carbono amorfo hidrogenado livre de dopantes apresentam curvas de corrente e tensão características indicando um mecânismo de condução elétrica complexo devido a sua diversidade de microestruturas e relacionado aos parâmetros de processos de deposição. Os filmes com nitrogênio são mais estáveis termicamente com coeficientes da ordem de - 4900 ppm/ºC. Os resultados encontrados indicam a existência de dois tipos de portadores de cargas responsáveis pela mobilidade média, resistividade e efeito piezoresistivo. Os filmes de óxido de estanho dopado com índio livre e com 5 % e 10 % de oxigênio no plasma apresentam características de diminuição da resistência elétrica com o esforço mecânico e exibem efeitos de piezoresistividade na faixa de - 12 a - 23. Amostras destes filmes com oxigênio apresentaram um fator de sensibilidade mecânica muito baixa e são menos estáveis termicamente que as amostras livres de oxigênio. Os filmes estudados podem ser usados em aplicações envolvendo extensiometria ou mesmo em sensores de pressão piezoresistivos após adequação do processo de deposição e de recozimentos térmicos. This tesis presents the piezoresistivity theoretical and experimental study for two materials with amorphous structure. The first material is the Diamond Like Carbon and the other is the Indium Tin Oxide. The work includes the bibliographic study, theoretical and practical design of structures for testing individual and piezoresistors configured in bridge, in addition to the completion of the characterizations electrical, mechanical and thermal according to a proposed experimental arrangement. The experimental characterizations have been implemented using the technique of cantilever and the theory of small deflections. The different materials analyzed showed the piezoresistive effect with some order of magnitude and a sign of sensitivity to mechanical stress of tension consistent with the characteristics expected for these types of films. Both films respond to changes in temperature in a very linear and have a direction of dependency with the temperature according to the literature. The films of free doping have curves of current and voltage characteristics for this type of material indicating a mechanism of electric conduction very complex because of its diversity of microstructures and processes related to the parameters of the deposition and films with nitrogen are more thermally stable with coefficients of order of - 4900 ppm/ºC. The results indicate the existence of two types of charge carriers responsible for the average mobility and hence the resistivity and the piezoresistive effect. The films of indium tin oxide free and with some oxygen content in plasma presents characteristics of decreased electrical resistance to mechanical stress and exhibit effects of piezoresistive in the range of - 12 to - 23. Samples of these films with oxygen showed a factor of very low mechanical sensitivity and are less stables to thermal effect the samples free of oxygen. The films studied can be used in certain applications such strain gauges or even in piezoresistive pressure sensors, after adequate process of deposition and thermal annealing.

A platina é um material caro e devido às suas várias aplicações tende a se tornar cada vez mais raro. Levando-se em consideração que as propriedades físicoquímicas das partículas mudam de acordo com o tamanho e formato das mesmas, este trabalho visou estudar a produção de nanopartículas de platina para aplicação em células a combustível, de modo que a quantidade do metal utilizado fosse menor quando comparada com as células comerciais sem que a mesma perdesse eficiência de energia. Para verificação da eficiência dessas nanopartículas foi utilizada membrana polimérica, onde foram depositados primeiramente partículas de carbono em camadas, sendo o tempo de cada deposição de 5 minutos e em seguida foram depositadas as nanopartículas de platina por um tempo de 30 segundos. Essas deposições foram realizadas nos dois lados da membrana, formando então o catodo e o anodo. Para alcançar tal objetivo, foi utilizada técnica assistida a plasma a baixa pressão, onde foi possível obter controles de todos os parâmetros de processo, fator primordial para homogeneização dos tamanhos e formatos das nanopartículas. A utilização dos tempos curtos de processo evitou danos a membrana polimérica devido aos efeitos gerados pelos processos assistidos a plasma, principalmente a temperatura de processo. Após os processos as membranas foram ativadas e em seguida foram montadas nas células e realizados os ensaios. Os resultados alcançados através desses processos foram de 20 mA com tensão de 920 mV, para processos com mais de uma camada de carbono. A comparação da eficiência total entre a célula de combustível comercial e de célula de combustível produzido por técnica assistida a plasma foi de 45%, mostrando aumento de 15% para as células de combustível por meio da técnica assistida a plasma com 70% menos de platina aplicada. Platinum is an expensive material and due to its various applications tends to become increasingly rare. Taking into consideration that the physico-chemical properties of the particles change according to the size and shape of them, this work was to study the production of platinum nanoparticles for in fuel cells use, so that the amount of metal used was lower when compared to commercial fuel cells, but without energy efficiency lost. To evaluate the efficiency of these nanoparticles, polymeric membrane was used, in which were deposited carbon particles in layers. Each carbon layer deposition time was made in 5 minutes and then was deposited platinum nanoparticles for a time of 30 seconds. These depositions were performed on both sides of the membrane, thus forming the cathode and anode. To achieve this goal, were used technique of low pressure plasma, where it was possible to get control of all process parameters, a key factor for homogenization of sizes and shapes of nanoparticles. The use of short process times prevented damage to the polymeric membrane due to the effect generated by the plasma, mainly the process temperature. After the processes, the membranes were activated and then the cells were assembled and the tests. The results achieved by these processes were 20 mA of current and 920 mV of voltage, applying processes with more than one layer of carbon. The comparison of total efficiency between commercial fuel cell and fuel cell produced by plasma technique was 45 % showing increase of 15 % for fuel cell by plasma technique with 70 % less platinum applied.

Os metamateriais acústicos/elásticos são materiais que apresentam características elásticas diferentes dos materiais comuns encontrados na natureza, sendo o índice de refração negativo a principal característica destes novos materiais. A literatura reporta que esta propriedade é atingida para uma faixa muito estreita de frequências, sendo um efeito muito localizado, e, adicionalmente, as estruturas propostas são ideais em extremo, o que dificulta sua aplicação prática em dispositivos acústicos. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi projetar metamateriais acústicos e elásticos tridimensionais com índice de refração negativo numa faixa de frequência mais longa em relação ao reportado na literatura, e utilizando geometrias e materiais que tornem viável sua implementação prática para a fabricação de dispositivos. Com este propósito foi desenvolvido um formalismo da teoria de meio efetivo (TME), no limite de comprimento de onda longa e baixas frações de preenchimento. Com a TME desenvolvida foi estudado o espalhamento de inclusões esféricas simples, revestidas e duplamente revestidas em diferentes matrizes hospedeiras. Os resultados mostraram a existência de bandas ressonantes nos coeficientes da matriz T relacionadas aos modos monopolares, dipolares e quadrupolares. Materiais compósitos constituídos por esferas simples, revestidas ou duplamente revestidas foram analisados utilizando o formalismo TME. Os resultados mostraram que os valores negativos dos parâmetros elásticos nestes materiais estão completamente relacionados aos efeitos ressonantes das inclusões esféricas. Metamateriais elásticos e acústicos foram projetados sobrepondo dois ou mais compósitos diferentes, cada um com diferentes propriedades, de tal forma que o efeito total no metamaterial apresente as características definidas no projeto inicial. O metamaterial elástico foi projetado utilizando a sobreposição de três compósitos de inclusões esféricas diferentes. Este metamaterial apresentou índice de refração negativa na região de 2 kHz, numa faixa de largura igual a 80 Hz. O metamaterial acústico foi projetado sobrepondo dois compósitos de inclusões esféricas diferentes. Este material apresentou índice de refração negativa na região de 7 kHz, numa faixa de 500 Hz. As geometrias e materiais utilizados no projeto destes metamateriais são acessíveis e de fácil manipulação, o que facilitará sua futura fabricação em laboratório. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho sugerem a possibilidade de fabricar estes metamateriais no laboratório e empregá-los no controle de ondas acústicas, elásticas e sísmicas, assim como também no projeto de um manto de invisibilidade acústica/elástica. The acoustic/elastic metamaterials are materials that show different elastic features from common materials found in nature and their main characteristics are their negative refractive index. The literature reports that this property is reached for a very narrow range of frequencies, as a very localized phenomenon, and additionally, the proposed structures are extremely ideals, which makes its practical application difficult on acoustic devices. The objective of this work was to design acoustic/elastic three-dimensional Metamaterials with negative refractive index in a wider frequency band than that reported in the literature, and using geometries and materials that make it possible their practical implementation for manufacturing acoustic/elastic devices. With this purpose a formalism of the effective medium theory (EMT) was developed, in the limit of wavelength and low fill fractions. With the developed EMT, the scattering of simple spherical inclusions, coated and doubly coated in different host substrates were studied. The results showed the existence of resonant bands in the coefficients of the T matrix related to monopolar, dipolar and quadrupolar modes. Composite materials consisting of simple, coated or double coated spheres were analyzed using the EMT formalism. The results showed that the negative values of elastic parameters in these materials are completely related to resonant effects of the spheres of inclusion. Elastic and acoustic Metamaterials were designed by overlaying two or more different composites, each with different properties, such that the overall effect on the metamaterial shows the desired features defined in the initial project. The elastic metamaterial was designed by overlapping three different composites of different spherical inclusions. This metamaterial shows negative refractive index in the region of 2 kHz, in a band of width of 80 Hz. The acoustic metamaterial was designed by overlapping two composites of different spherical inclusions. This material shows negative refractive index in the region of 7 kHz, in a band of width of 500 Hz. The geometries and materials used in the design of these Metamaterials are affordable and easy to handle, which will facilitate their future fabrication in the laboratory. The results obtained in this study suggest the possibility to manufacture these metamaterials in the laboratory and use them in the control of acoustic, elastic and seismic waves, as well as in the design of invisible cloak.

O presente projeto tem como objetivo contribuir para o desenvolvimento de dispositivos para monitoração de pressão dinâmica do ar. Para isso, foram produzidos filmes sensíveis a pressão baseados na detecção de concentração de oxigênio por meio de processos de emissão fotoluminescente das moléculas de Azul de Metileno (MB) e Platina Octaetilporfirina (PtOEP). Nesse sentido, foi estudado o comportamento da emissão fotoluminescente dessas moléculas em interação com o gás de oxigênio. A concentração de oxigênio (do ar) sobre superfície sensível depende da pressão dinâmica de superfície. Desta forma, monitorando a fotoluminescência dos dispositivos submetidos a diferentes concentrações de oxigênio, pode-se determinar uma relação entre a pressão pontual da superfície analisada e a intensidade de emissão fotoluminescente do filme. Os dispositivos de monitoração de pressão dinâmica são constituídos de um filme de estado sólido contendo as moléculas sensíveis. Foram utilizados como substratos hospedeiros para o Azul de Metileno e para a Octaetilporfirina de Platina, os filmes de silício poroso oxidado e Poliestireno, respectivamente. É proposto um arranjo experimental que utiliza um fluorímetro para caracterizar as amostras produzidas e uma câmara de fluxo de gases. Os dispositivos apresentaram elevada sensibilidade e evidenciaram o potencial para desenvolvimento e integração de sensores baseados no silício poroso à microeletrônica. This project aims to contribute to the development of devices for monitoring dynamic pressure of the air. In this sense, films were produced based on pressure-sensitive detection of oxygen concentration through processes of photoluminescence emission from the molecules of methylene blue (MB) and platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP). Accordingly, it was studied the behavior of the photoluminescence emission of these molecules in interaction with the oxygen gas. The concentration of oxygen (of the air composition) on the sensitive surface depends on the surface dynamic pressure. Thus, monitoring the photoluminescence of the devices under different oxygen concentrations, it can be determined a relationship between the punctual pressure of the tested surface and the photoluminescence emission intensity of the film. The devices for monitoring dynamic pressure are made of a solid state film containing the sensitive molecules. Oxidized porous silicon and polystyrene films were used as hosts for the Methylene Blue and for the Platinum Octaethylporphyrin, respectively. It was proposed an experimental setup that uses a spectrofluorophotometer and a gas flow chamber to characterize the produced samples. The devices showed high sensitivity and potential for development and integration of the sensors based on porous silicon for microelectronics.
