PurposeThis study contributes to the understanding of how cultural organizations are using digital technologies to redesign their business models and enable sustainable and impactful audiovisual digital archives.Design/methodology/approachAn inductive multiple case research design was used. Five cases of audiovisual digital archives of independent films were selected. Data collected was based on desk research, onsite visits, interviews with top managers responsible for the digitalization of some of the archives and experimentation with the services provided. Data was collected and analyzed based on a theoretical framework defined from the literature for business models of cultural organizations.FindingsThe archives analyzed faced the challenge of aligning the commercial viability with a mission of making content available to increase cultural knowledge. A sustainable business model may be achieved by using different revenue models, while guaranteeing to offer a value proposition carefully aligned with stakeholders' expectations. Moreover, an impactful business model, i.e. a business model that enhances the creation of cultural value for customers and reaches wider audiences, requires careful audience management and the use of data analysis about audience behavior to adjust the offering. Finally, the business model must consider the resources, activities and infrastructure that ensure critical capabilities for the business and must be designed to ensure financial resilience of the organization.Originality/valueThis study contributes with a holistic analysis of business models for the digital transformation of cultural organizations, detailing alternative configurations for the most relevant components of a digital business model for audiovisual archives.

Background Immunization is an important public health intervention worldwide, since it helps preventing, controlling, eradicating and reducing the number of death cases resulting from immunopreventable diseases. Meningococcal C conjugate vaccine (MenC) was made available for children under 2 years old due to significant increase in the number and rate of meningococcal disease (MD) serogroup C cases in Brazil, which recorded outbreaks in different regions. Identifying regions with low MenC vaccine application coverage is a priority strategy to target immunization actions, as well as to reduce the risk of DM circulation in different countries. Spatial analysis can help identifying areas with large numbers of children susceptible to MD, as well as directing priority health policies and strategies to these regions. The aim of the current study is to analyze meningococcal C vaccination coverage based on temporal trends in MenC vaccine coverage over 11 years, as well as the spatial distribution of MenC vaccine coverage, based on identifying spatial clusters with large numbers of children susceptible to MD. Methods This ecological, mixed study was conducted with secondary data about MenC vaccine coverage from 2011 to 2021, in Brazil, and made available by the National Immunization Program Information System (SI-PNI). Descriptive analysis was used to assess the annual coverage of MenC vaccine, based on geographic region, by taking into consideration all 26 Brazilian Federative Units (UF), the Federal District and the analyzed years. Prais-Winsten linear regression model was used for trend analysis purposes: MenC vaccination coverage per state, per Brazilian region (all five regions), and MenC vaccination coverage countrywide were used as dependent variables. Analyzed years were used as independent variable. Spatial dependence and incidence of spatial clusters formed by municipalities with high and low MenC vaccination coverage were assessed through spatial statistical analysis. Results In the current study have evidenced downward trend in MenC vaccination coverage in Brazil, in all five Brazilian regions and in 20 of the 27 Brazilian states, as well as progressive increase in the number of spatial clusters with low vaccination coverage, mainly in Northern and Northeastern Brazil. Conclusion These findings are expected to influence the formulation of practices, policies, programs and actions based on robust scientific evidence about the development of MD prevention and health promotion strategies and interventions, both at national and global level.

To enhance the economic viability and address the labour shortage in the forestry industry, alternative solutions using robotization and automation are emerging. However, due to technological barriers and lack of solid business models, successful commercialization in the forestry sector is yet to be challenging. As an initial market analysis for developing a business model for new forestry machineries, this study was conducted to reveal clusters of EU countries to seek the potential market opportunities outside of Portugal. To identify similar market conditions and restrictions, EU countries were clustered using a hierarchical clustering algorithm and selection of variables while considering the geographic, economic, and social conditions of each country. Preliminary results showed that Austria and Poland had similar social capital and geographic conditions.

Across the world, several developing countries with recent wind energy (WE) diffusion have been demonstrating an interest in expanding WE generation quickly and expressively. In Brazil, this fast and remarkable WE diffusion process started in the past decade, facing a variety of barriers. This research proposes to reliably identify and analyse current barriers to the implementation of onshore wind farms in the country, aiming at informing other developing countries with the intention to expand WE utilization about potential barriers, as well as assisting the Brazilian WE sector in its efforts to keep growing sustainably. To achieve this research goal, 41 key stakeholders from the Brazilian WE sector were interviewed. Based on a content analysis of the interviews, twenty-four barriers where identified, three of which with particular relevance: poor transmission infrastructure, unattractive financial loans and unstable macroeconomic environment. The data collected suggests a serious risk that Brazil's WE sector stops growing if the recovery of its national economy, the reestablishment of regular energy auctions, the access to competitive credit, and improvements to the transmission system infrastructure keep being held back. In the face of this scenario, this study concludes by providing policy recommendations concerning the sustainability of the Brazilian WE sector.

Technological breakthroughs, such as the Internet of Things, Big Data repositories, artificial intelligence or additive manufacturing, are triggering a Fourth Industrial Revolution. This new revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, is characterized by the combination of physical and digital worlds in digital ecosystems that connect the different members in the value chain from clients to suppliers and distributors. Companies are redefining their strategies based on this new paradigm to obtain a competitive advantage. They aim to achieve more efficient and flexible productive processes that can produce high-quality products at low costs, investing on mass customization to satisfy their clients. Accordingly, governments are implementing support programs that create a suitable environment for the adoption of technological innovation strategies by the companies. Although some programs may diverge in some objectives, they all aim to promote workers' skills adaptation, technological supply development, and business modernization. The Portuguese Government also released its program for Industry 4.0 support, known as Portugal i4.0, which is intended to stimulate Portuguese economy digitalization. Furthermore, in latest years, it has been supporting projects through European funds mobilizations from Portugal 2020 program. The present study analyses whether companies that received financial support from Portuguese government to implement innovative projects, within the Industry 4.0 paradigm, were able to improve economic and financial performance and competitivity gains. For such purpose, it was applied an inference statistical method to analyse the differences verified in economics and financial indicators between the periods before and after projects implementation in a selected group of companies.

Technological evolution has continuously driven the development of industries and consequently of society. The fourth industrial revolution consists in the combination of a set of physical and digital technologies that has been changing systems’ operations within industries.

The development of the Internet created new technologies that are changing the way of doing business, particularly Industry 4.0 in current days. One challenge of the implementation of new technologies is the change required from companies' business models. However, the literature concerning Industry 4.0 is mainly focused on technological innovations and less in their impact on business models. This paper aims to understand the impacts of the digitalization process inherent to Industry 4.0 on business models. To achieve this purpose, an exploratory multiple-case study based on semi-structured interviews was conducted in two Portuguese medium companies from two different sectors. Findings show that besides companies being able to change to a customer-oriented approach, individualized mass production may not be the only purpose of this transformation. Networking is particularly appealing for small and medium enterprises, once they usually have fewer resources to dedicate to innovation projects. Additionally, in the era of globalization, logistic costs are still an obstacle for serving international markets. Finally, social media are seen as an internal tool of communication for business-to-business companies. Being one of the first empirical studies of the Portuguese context, it aims to diminish the lack of literature concerning this particular topic and enable future researches on the use of business models as a management tool. Secondly, it intends to help managers develop or redesign business models adjusted to a more dynamic and competitive environment.

The increasing need to innovate to keep or create competitive advantage and the difficulty in retaining resources that enable innovation, force companies to look for partnerships. Partnering with the appropriate and leading R&D (Research and Development) institutions is critical to be able to innovate. One of the first challenges that emerges when building a collaboration is the selection of organizations to form the consortium. Technology foresight might be an interesting process to start building such partnership, as it helps identify technology opportunities and the entities that lead technology development.

Project management is a critical success factor for any kind of project. When projects involve complex multi-organisational structures, requiring demanding collaborative processes, project management is a complex system in itself. Although this topic has been studied for decades, the ever-changing morphology of projects induced by the increasingly intricate financing schemes, call for a frequent and updated understanding of how the projects initiate, run, and close. Large-scale integrated collaborative projects are a recent example of complex collaborative projects that were not studied yet but can provide important insights for the project and innovation management fields. These projects are carried out typically by a large consortium including research organisations, sectorial technological centres, technology providers and end-user companies, having a significant impact on the technological innovation produced for a specific sector. This chapter reports a multiple case study of four large-scale integrated projects, in Portugal, following an inductive research design. The results showed that collaboration creation and collaboration management are crucial processes for such projects, with challenges intensified by the differences in goals and expectations of researchers and practitioners. The chapter will hopefully contribute to the future development of new models, tools and techniques that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of this type of projects, by providing a systematisation of the challenges faced and how they were overcome during the cases analysed.

Similar to the case of biotechnology industry, companies providing devices in the biomedicine industry face several challenges, and to stand out from competitors need to know how to get to the right customer. Potential customers (i.e., individuals and organizations) may choose to adopt or reject an innovative product and will later confirm that decision or not. Such decision is of utmost importance to the success of innovative products and, therefore, of the company that provides them. The aim of this study is to understand how perceptions formed about a biomedical product can influence its adoption intention and behavior and, hereafter, influence the decision of other potential adopters. Findings from a multiple case study provide a clear definition of the adoption process of a specific biomedical product, combining two existing theories - the Diffusion of Innovations Theory and the Technology Acceptance Model - and including the feedback created by interactions between current users of the product and potential users, to understand what influences potential adopters' decisions.

Industry 4.0 is a result of technological evolution and is intended to promote technological transformations in industry at different levels. The impact in human employment has been perceived as a major threat and is a matter of concern. Some authors argue that automation will bring unimaginable changes as soon as computers get more intelligence and as machines become able to perform complex tasks more efficiently than humans. However, technological progress is also pointed out as a stimulus for human-beings to develop the competencies that differentiate them from the machines. In this context, this study aims to explore the impacts of adopting Industry 4.0 technologies on work. The results of a comprehensive literature review provide an integrated perspective to identify and understand such impacts, analysing them in four categories: evolution of employment and creation of new jobs, human-machine interaction, new competencies creation / development, and, organizational and professional changes

Previous literature shows that there are different environmental factors with different impacts on the adoption of technologies in a supply chain context. Thus, the adoption of technologies in supply chains may vary according to different environmental factors. Despite the existence of several studies about adoption of technologies in supply chain contexts that include environmental factors, there is a gap in identifying which environmental factors influence the adoption of digitalization technologies in supply chains. The purpose of this study is therefore to identify and analyze the environmental factors that influence the adoption of digitalization technologies in the supply chain. An exploratory qualitative research was conducted using semi-structured interviews with Portuguese managers of companies at several tiers of the automotive supply chain. Environmental factors were pointed as particularly critical drivers to promote the adoption of digitalization technologies in the automotive supply chain. Such adoption is mainly driven by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), through coercive and normative pressures over the other tiers of the supply chain. Relevant factors identified are: compliance with standards and legislation, market and industry pressures, and benchmark the evolution of supply chain partners. This study contributes to the literature with new knowledge concerning new specificities of the environmental factors that showed an important influence on the adoption decision.

The Business Model is recognized as a valuable tool that helps companies leverage their competitive advantage while dealing with market uncertainty. It enables startups to organize in an efficient way, helping them to rapidly adapt to the different challenges they might face.By using a multiple case study this research aims at understanding how and why startups commercializing technology-based products that support healthcare providing activities changed their business model in the path to a sustainable growth. Based on the Business Model Canvas (BMC), it was possible to analyze different approaches used by those startups to face the challenges encountered. Three main challenges were identified that drove change in the business models: lack of knowledge about the customers’ needs, lack of knowledge about the best fitting configuration of a standard product to the market, and lack of knowledge about configuration and interests of the different players. Moreover, even though the literature argues that business model evolution is driven by market and technology conditions, the business models of the startups included in this study changed exclusively due to market conditions.

Brazil has been failing to offer the most favorable conditions for the implementation of onshore wind farms, due to the presence of multiple barriers. However, the country has observed a fast and expressive wind energy (WE) diffusion (the installed WE capacity grew 37 times in the last decade). Furthermore, its onshore wind farms have reached impressive capacity factors (with productivity levels much higher than the average around the world) and a very low levelized cost of electricity. This study aims at identifying how wind developers plan onshore wind farms to overcome existing barriers. Based on forty-one interviews with relevant stakeholders of the Brazilian WE sector, the study identified efforts targeted at overcoming twenty-four previously identified barriers. Although most barriers may be overcome directly through developer initiatives, addressing higher level barriers, namely an unstable macroeconomic environment, a poor transmission infrastructure, and inadequate access to capital, depends on government actions.

Doctoral programmes are facing several challenges in modern societies. The societal role of the University, funded by the state, requires it to: a) increase the offer and admission of third cycle students; b) to reach industry/companies expectations; c) to ensure reasonable employability prospects for the PhD candidates. With the current demography, most candidates can only find a job in industry/companies. Therefore, significant pressure is being put on doctoral programmes to include transferable skills in their curriculum. This paper presents a course “Fit for Industry?” aiming at filling this need. The course design methodology is presented in detail. It includes: a) the involvement of industry since its inception; b) the joint identification of a small number of key competencies to be addressed; c) the inclusion of assessment and feedback mechanisms in its design; d) an immersive and international dimension. It was found that the course had a profound impact on the candidates' perceptions of industry and valued by industry participants. Other stakeholders, such as PhD supervisors, also had a positive perception. The paper concludes with recommendations for those willing to replicate the course locally.

The main objective of this work was to answer the question “How are videogames implemented in healthcare organizations to be used as therapy instruments?”. This question emerged in the intersection of the recent increasing interest in the use of this type of technologies in therapy, with the importance of the implementation process for organizations to use a technology in its full potential. A multiple case study was performed, using three cases of implementations of Nintendo Wii console as a therapy instrument in rehabilitation clinics. The cases were used to compare the implementation of the same technology in organizations with the same core activity. The implementation processes were characterized and compared in light of the well-established literature about implementations of technologies, which led to a preliminary conceptual generalization of the implementation of videogames in healthcare organizations when they are intended to be used as therapy tools, highlighting the key characteristics of such projects. From this research it was possible to conclude that when adopting a console such as Nintendo Wii with rehabilitation purposes, the adoption decision seems to be predominantly informal; the stage of preparation of the implementation (when therapists conveniently prepare themselves to start using the console in their treatments) is quite important for the implementation process; the implementation of a technology such as Nintendo Wii occurs as a mutual adaptation process although with characteristics of a learning implementation, where adaptations occur mostly in the adopter; and, even though there may not be in place the best conditions to use the technology in its full potential, the efforts to routinize it may help overcoming the resistance to use it that results from those lack of conditions

Onshore wind energy (WE) has achieved a significant diffusion worldwide, in spite of the existence of multiple barriers to the large-scale implementation of wind farms. These barriers have been reported in a large number of studies, but the literature is lacking a systematized overview of their categories and locations. Based on a framework for the analysis of barriers to the penetration of renewable energy sources proposed by Painuly [363], this systematic literature review contributes to addressing this gap, identifying barriers to the large-scale implementation of onshore wind farms by category (market failures, market distortions, economic and financial, institutional, technical, social and other barriers) and location (countries around the world), and characterizing them by the level of economic development (least developed, developing, in transition, and developed) and stage of diffusion (recent or advanced) in their locations. The framework showed a high level of fit with the case of WE and allowed the identification of 31 barriers in 159 countries. The barriers were found to be mostly present in developing economies with recent diffusion, although some barriers were found to occur broadly across developed economies, regardless of the stage of diffusion. The three most frequently observed barriers were the inadequate consideration of externalities, uncertain and unsupportive governmental policies, and insufficient transmission grids.

Wildfire management has been struggling in recent years with escalating devastation, expenditures, and complexity. Given the copious factors involved and the complexity of their interactions, uncertainty in the outcomes is a prominent feature of wildfire management strategies, at both policy and operational levels. Improvements in risk handling and in risk-based decision support tools have therefore a key role in addressing these challenges. In this paper, we review key systems created to support wildfire management decision-making at different levels and scales, and describe their evolution from an initial focus on landscape-level fire growth simulation and burn probability assessment, to the incorporation of exposure and economic loss potential (allowing the translation of ignition likelihood, fire environment – terrain, fuels, and weather – and suppression efficacy into potential fire effects), the integration with forest management and planning, and more recently, to developments in the assessment of values at risk, including real-time assessment. This evolution is linked to a progressive widening of the scope of usage of these systems, from an initial more limited application to risk assessment, to the subsequent inclusion of functionality enabling their utilization in the context of risk management, and more recently, to their explicit casting in the broader societal context of risks and decisions, from a risk governance perspective. This joint evolution can be seen as the result of a simultaneous pull from methodological progresses in risk handling, and push from technological progress in wildfire management decision support tools, as well as more broadly in computational power. We identify the key benefits and challenges in the development and adoption of these systems, as well as future plausible research trends.
