Abstract Thailand is under threat from climate change, where extreme climate events are expected to intensify and increase in the coming decades. The objective is to assess extreme drought and rainfall events in Thailand based on climate modeling through an ensemble for future projections of extreme climate indices. The climate indices used were Consecutive Dry Days (CDD), Maximum Number of Consecutive Summer Days (CSU), Consecutive Wet Days (CWD), Warm Spell Duration Index (WSDI), and Maximum Number of Consecutive Wet Days (WW) derived from simulations of an ensemble composed of six models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) via the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with the backpropagation method. The projections were based on three scenarios: historical (20th century); intermediate forcing (RCP 4.5) and high forcing (RCP 8.5). The results of the climate indices pointed to significant regional differences in Thailand. Historically, the CDD indicated 35 consecutive dry days in the northern (N) and northeastern (NE) parts of Thailand, whereas the southern region showed CDD values of fewer than 10 consecutive dry days. In the R4.5 scenario, a meridional pattern emerged in CDD, increasing from east (E) to west (W). In the R8.5 scenario, the number of consecutive dry days increased across the entire country. The WSDI stood out in both the R4.5 and R8.5 scenarios, with an increase in the duration of warm spells in Thailand. The CSU did not perform satisfactorily in the scenarios adopted. Historically, the CWD indicated consecutive wet days in the N and NE, whereas in the R4.5 and R8.5 scenarios, this was observed only in the Central and Southern regions. Historically, the maximum number of consecutive rainy days varied in the NE and South via WW. In the R4.5 and R8.5 scenarios, there was a significant increase in the maximum number of consecutive rainy days across Thailand. Projections based on climate indices indicate that Thailand needs to adopt mitigation measures across its regions to neutralize the impacts of extreme drought and rainfall events on socioeconomic sectors, particularly in tourism, industry, agricultural production, and food security for its population.

Leishmania infantum is responsible for visceral leishmaniasis, the most severe form of the disease. The treatments currently used are pentavalent antimonials and amphotericin B, but they present serious side effects and resistant species that already exist. Therefore, it is necessary to find new compounds to avoid those acute problems. In vitro, this study evaluated the effects of fifteen digoxin derivative compounds on promastigotes and two of these compounds on amastigotes of L. infantum. We also assess the impact of these compounds on mitochondrial metabolism. The results showed that two of the fifteen compounds tested showed a high anti-Leishmania effect. Compounds 3 and 15 showed no toxicity across the cell lines RAW 264.7. Compound 15 inhibited macrophage infection and reduced the number of amastigotes. The two compounds showed a reduction in oxygen consumption by promastigotes. In this way, compounds 3 and 15 appear to be promising anti-leishmanial. Therefore, we checked both compounds in vivo also evaluating the toxicity by measuring ALT, AST, urea, and creatinine. Our results may contribute in the future to the development and application of new anti-Leishmania drugs.

Cardiotonic steroids are known to bind to Na+/K+-ATPase and regulate several biological processes, including the immune response. The synthetic cardiotonic steroid γ-Benzylidene Digoxin 8 (BD-8) is emerging as a promising immunomodulatory molecule, although it has remained largely unexplored. Therefore, we tested the immunomodulatory potential of BD-8 both in vitro and in vivo. Hence, primary mouse macrophages were incubated with combinations of BD-8 and the pro-inflammatory fungal protein zymosan (ZYM). Nitric oxide (NO) production was determined by Griess reagent and cytokines production was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), reactive oxygen species (ROS), p-nuclear factor kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65), p-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK), and p-p38 were evaluated by flow cytometry. Macrophages exposed to BD-8 displayed reduced phagocytic activity, NO levels, and production of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β induced by ZYM. Furthermore, BD-8 diminished the expression of iNOS and phosphorylation of NF-κB p65, ERK, and p38. Additionally, BD-8 exhibited anti-inflammatory capacity in vivo in a carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema model. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the anti-inflammatory activity of BD-8 and further reinforce the potential of cardiotonic steroids and their derivatives as immunomodulatory molecules.

O estresse é um fator que influencia a qualidade de vida das pessoas e que, em sua condição crônica, acarreta diversas desordens físicas e emocionais nos indivíduos de diferentes faixas etárias. Algumas pesquisas têm apontado evidências de índices de estresse nos ambientes de ensino e as suas consequências para a comunidade educacional. Determinadas práticas respiratórias do yoga têm sido reportadas na literatura evidenciando seus desencadeamentos fisiológicos no controle do estresse, contribuindo para uma melhor qualidade de vida. Com a presente pesquisa buscou-se avaliar o potencial da inserção da prática de exercícios respiratórios do yoga como recurso educacional nos ambientes de ensino da Educação Profissional e Tecnológica (EPT) a fim de contribuir para uma melhoria da qualidade de vida. Para tanto, foi desenvolvido um guia contendo uma sequência didática para uma prática respiratória, chamada Respiração Completa do Yoga, com controle dos tempos inspiratório e expiratório, a qual foi aplicada e avaliada pela comunidade educacional do Instituto Federal Fluminense. Os resultados mostraram-se positivos pela comunidade, concordantes com o potencial do guia didático como recurso viável de inserção aos ambientes de ensino da EPT.

The environmental benefits arising from the interaction between matter and energy flows of permacultural systems accelerate the recovery processes of degraded areas, which can be potentiated by the increase of plant biomass associated with the green manure technique, proposed in this work for the study territory: the surroundings of two Conservation Units (UC), of the Private Reserve of Natural Heritage (RPPN) type, the RPPN Águas Claras I and II. The RPPN Águas Claras I and II are located in the Macabu River basin, a microbasin of the Carukango River. The objective of this study was to analyze areas submitted to reforestation and agroforestry system (SAF) projects, through estimates of local biomass obtained with the aid of secondary data from the UCs’ forest inventory. As a result, it was possible to list Ficus sp and Sparattosperma leucanthum as priority native species for forest restoration. It was concluded that it is necessary to consort the two species with the planting of species considered green manures, in order to increase forest biomass and stimulate the improvement of soil conditions in the degraded portion of the reserve. This strategy can accelerate the regeneration process, as indicated by secondary soil analysis data using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), performed in the area of implementation of the SAF.

O presente artigo tem como tema o papel dos Institutos Federais (IF) de Educação na formação profissional para o mundo do trabalho. Seu objetivo é compreender esse papel, bem como a importância que os IF exercem na sociedade. A realização de pesquisas bibliográficas e documentais possibilitam um resgate histórico da trajetória da educação profissional no Brasil, relacionando-a com diferentes contextos, bem como com os projetos de sociedade dominantes em cada época. A instituição da Rede Federal de Educação Profissional, Científica e Tecnológica, criando os Institutos Federais de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia, em 2008, bem como a descrição dos objetivos e pilares que estruturam suas ações também são apresentadas neste trabalho. A análise dos resultados indica que a expansão da indústria 4.0 e as transformações vivenciadas no período pandêmico conferem aos IF relevância ainda maior no que tange à formação profissional integral, humana e emancipatória que contribuirá para a ressignificação do mundo do trabalho, das relações que nele se estabelecem e da sociedade como um todo.

Abstract Grout is a material usually applied to enhance the mechanical properties of structural masonry. As such, the demand for grout has been growing parallel to the demand for structural masonry. Without guidelines for grout mixing design, these products are often prepared on-site based on the same concepts used for preparing ordinary Portland cement-based concretes. Several grout properties still need to be investigated and understood due to this mixing-design approach, and consequently, the production of ecoefficient grouts is a secondary priority. Due to these obstacles, there is a demand for technical-scientific studies to aid with developing grout design guidelines. This work evaluates the rheological and hardened properties of grout compositions that simulate in-field conditions to show the inadequacy of the mixing design method and a way to understand this lack in the technology. The research investigates how the changes in the water-to-cement ratio, to increase the strength, would affect the fresh and hardened state properties of grouts for structural masonry. The grout’s mixing was done in a rheometer which made it possible to determine the rheological behaviour and parameters during mixing and under different shear conditions. Compressive strength, porosity, and air-permeability were evaluated in the hardened state. The results showed that compositions with more cement content does not necessarily reflect enhanced mechanical properties since the differences were not statistically significant, because other variables were also changed. The research findings suggest that the design method used in practice may not be appropriate and potentially result in the waste of cementitious materials and no-eco-friendly compositions.

Weak governance over the Brazilian Amazon is jeopardizing both social and environmental balance. Moreover, the loss of this balance can have severe social, economic, and political consequences at local, national, and global levels. Therefore, we plan to answer how the Brazilian forest is being protected based on the perspective of the environmental military police integrating all states of the so-called Legal Amazon. The study came from a field survey conducted through a questionnaire sent to those police agencies. The research is based on exploratory and descriptive methods of qualitative and quantitative approach with both field research and literature review on the subject. We sought to evaluate publications that satisfactorily described the “state of the art” of the main research on the topic, as we strove for the quality and comprehensiveness of the research, and a field survey through a questionnaire applied to law enforcement agencies. The responses were organized into four groups, allowing an overview of the environmental inspection in the region. Although the Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, it has been found that states in the region devote little human and material resources to its protection. They are insufficient, tactically, and strategically under-employed, poorly distributed, and for the most part, far below the national average, which is already lower than recommended by international bodies which dedicate to the protection of nature.

In Brazil, malacoculture is developed mainly in the state of Santa Catarina, followed by São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In the course of the development of Brazilian mariculture, legislation has addressed the sanitary requirements necessary for bivalve commercialization. However, monitoring phycotoxins is a challenge, due to often costly reference methods. In this context, this study evaluated the use of alternative ecotoxicological and bioanalytical methods using Artemia franciscana (brine shrimp) lethality assessments. The results confirm that, although correlations between the reference mouse assay and the brine shrimp assays were not high, the alternative brine shrimp assay may be incorporated into phycotoxin monitoring programs, as hepatopancreas methanolic extracts of mussel (Perna perna) containing DSP resulted in high lethality rates. Therefore, further methodological adjustment studies and the inclusion of other enzymatic and toxicological models are required to further assess these differences, and associations between ecotoxicological methods as early-alarm methods are encouraged.

As florestas tropicais úmidas estão entre os biomas mais ameaçados do planeta. Elas se tornaram as novas fronteiras de expansão do capital, tanto para a produção de commodities agrícolas quanto para a exploração de seus recursos naturais. Este artigo procura analisar como está sendo praticado o sistema de comando e controle sobre uma dessas florestas tropicais úmidas: a Amazônia brasileira. Para alcançar os objetivos traçados na pesquisa, foram empregados métodos exploratórios-descritivos de abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa, realizados por meio de pesquisa de campo e revisão da literatura sobre o assunto. Ainda se avaliou as publicações que melhor descrevessem o “estado da arte” do tema, sempre visando a qualidade e abrangência das pesquisas por mineração bibliométrica e levantamento de campo por meio de questionários administrados às corporações policiais militares. Examinando-se as agências e organizações policiais responsáveis pela proteção ambiental da União quanto aos estados que integram a Amazônia Legal verificou-se que todas elas dedicam poucos recursos materiais para uma proteção efetiva da floresta, bem como os recursos humanos são infinitamente menores do que o recomendado por organizações internacionais de proteção na natureza. Além disso, a estrutura responsável por investigar nos estados os crimes ambientais é pobre ou inexistente e distante das principais regiões de desmatamento e outros crimes ambientais, o que favorece a impunidade. Conclui-se que a falta de estrutura dos órgãos de comando e controle na Amazônia ameaça a sustentabilidade do ecossistema, da economia e da sociedade local, regional e global.

The cost of geotechnologies are becoming more accessible. The capacity to generate real-time maps with ubiquitous access and applications based on geocollaborative platforms developed for the most diverse purposes have been multiplying, allowing users to generate, share, and collect information about geographical spaces. Even so, the geotechnologies employing geographic information system (GIS) are still limited among the Brazilian environmental military police. This lack of geotechnologies diffusion occurs due to the absence of specific training, requiring a constant update from these professionals. The current stage of evolution on geotechnology through cloud computing, user-centered design, and geocollaboration demands the police command-and-control structures to rethink their strategies. Several platforms are available and open for developers to create applications under this technology. This article analyzes the potential applicability of geocollaboration in environmental inspection activities, through a case study in the CPAm/PMERJ.

As Áreas de Preservação Permanente (APPs) são alvos constantes de pressões antrópicas. Sendo assim, a sua delimitação e a sua caracterização compõem uma importante informação para a tomada de decisão no que se refere a medidas que visam proteger ou recuperar essas áreas ambientalmente sensíveis. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as APPs de corpos hídricos e quais são os tipos de conflitos no uso e na ocupação do solo urbano dessas áreas no município de Rio das Ostras, bem como as resoluções que têm sido efetuadas pelos órgãos de fiscalização ambiental, considerando a efetividade das intervenções. A pesquisa está baseada em método exploratório-descritivo com revisão da literatura na área ambiental, com foco nas APPs de corpos hídricos. Neste sentido, buscou-se um universo de estudo com as publicações mais relevantes, a partir do modelo do estudo bibliométrico. É possível concluir que as APPs são essenciais para a manutenção da função ecológica do ambiente, mas que, em conflito com o uso e a ocupação do solo, acabam sendo ineficazes na proteção do meio.

The poor outcome of treatments for fungal infections is a consequence of the increasing incidence of resistance to antifungal agents, mainly due to the overexpression of efflux pumps. To surpass this mechanism of resistance, a substance able to inhibit these pumps could be administered in association with antifungals. Saccharomyces cerevisiae possesses an efflux pump (Pdr5p) homologue to those found in pathogenic yeast. Digoxin is a natural product that inhibits Na+, K+-ATPase. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether digoxin and its derivatives (i.e., DGB, digoxin benzylidene) can inhibit Pdr5p, reversing the resistance to fluconazole in yeasts. An S. cerevisiae mutant strain that overexpresses Pdr5p was used in the assays. The effects of the compounds on yeast growth, efflux activity, and Pdr5p ATPase activity were measured. All derivatives enhanced the antifungal activity of fluconazole against S. cerevisiae, in comparison to fluconazole alone, with FICI values ranging from 0.031 to 0.500. DGB 1 and DGB 3 presented combined effects with fluconazole against a Candida albicans strain, with fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values of 0.625 and 0.281, respectively The compounds also inhibited the efflux of rhodamine 6G and Pdr5p ATPase activity, with IC50 values ranging from 0.41 μM to 3.72 μM. The results suggest that digoxin derivatives impair Pdr5p activity. Considering the homology between Pdr5p and efflux pumps from pathogenic fungi, these compounds are potential candidates to be used in association with fluconazole to treat resistant fungal infections.

Abstract Bauxite residue (BR), a by-product of alumina and aluminum production, consists of high aluminum, silica, and iron content, and sodium from the bauxite ore digestion during the Bayer process. This waste is still being disposal into the lakes of mud, causing some environmental problems. So, the search for its application has gained interest. Studies reported in literature point out that one of the most promising applications is in association with Portland cement, which can also help to reduce the environmental impact caused by the CO2-emissions in its production. In this work, a combined evaluation of oscillatory rheometry and isothermal calorimetry was performed for the monitoring of the hardening stage of Portland cement (PC) compositions blended with BR generated in different sites in Brazil. The time-sweep test was applied to obtain the consistency gain of suspensions over-time, allowing us to understand the physical parameters of consolidation, while the changes in the hydration reaction showed considerable differences in the chemical contribution. As a conclusion, it was clear the impact of each BR, mainly due to the aspects related to soluble aluminates, silicates, and sodium, which in association with the soluble ions from PC, affected the chemical reaction and agglomeration/flocculation forces of particles.

By investing in the viability of social gains providing training and professional qualification aiming to sustainability, the Public Power promotes new values and attitudes that contribute to the improvement of the environment, citizenship and life quality. With this research it was sought to evaluate the collaborative role of the Court of Justice in implementing the solidary selective collection at Rio das Ostras’ County Forum, in accordance with its Sustainable Logistics Plan, with the law that instituted the National Policy on Solid Waste and the Federal Constitution, under the guiding principles of Environmental Law. The methodological strategy adopted is based on exploratory and descriptive research with bibliographic review and the evaluation of qualitative and quantitative data. The study revealed that the Judiciary is a great generator of paper waste, and that the Forum produces daily almost 20% of the average generation of the entire region and that the involvement of the whole society is needed.

As Geotecnologias são excelentes instrumentos para gestão ambiental pela sua capacidade de integração de ferramentas e técnicas de modelagem dos fenômenos ambientais. Tendo como base o conceito de Análise da Paisagem é possível reconhecer os potenciais e as fragilidades de uma determinada área geográfica. A Região Hidrográfica VIII (RH-VIII), área de atuação do Comitê das Bacias Hidrográficas dos Rios Macaé e das Ostras (CBH Macaé/Ostras), apresenta alto grau de degradação ambiental devido à ocupação intensiva de terras impróprias ao uso. A preocupação com a gestão ambiental da região se manifesta a nível nacional, pois além do abastecimento público suas águas suprem boa parte das necessidades das indústrias de petróleo instaladas na região. Os módulos de Análise de Múltiplos Critérios (AMC) dos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (SIG) se apresentam como uma ferramenta viável em estudos de ordenamento territorial. Busca-se com a pesquisa fazer uma revisão da literatura visando adequar proposta metodológica para planejamento territorial da RH-VIII.

Os resíduos sólidos têm sido um grande desafio para o poder público. No Brasil, esta problemática tem sido cada vez mais discutida tanto no âmbito jurídico, em normativas e legislações, como também nas práticas de gestão que envolvem sociedade, empresas e instituições de ensino. A promulgação da Política Nacional dos Resíduos Sólidos, no ano de 2010, determinou a desativação dos lixões visando à disposição ambientalmente adequada, em aterros sanitários, dos resíduos cujas possibilidades técnicas e econômicas de tratamento já se esgotaram. De acordo com pesquisa feita pela ABRELPRE (2012), aproximadamente 51,4% dos Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos (RSU) no Brasil são formados por resíduo orgânico, sendo essa fração cabível de tratamento através da compostagem e biodigestão. As Instituições de Ensino possuem papel fundamental no desenvolvimento de novas técnicas, sendo um laboratório de ideias sempre em busca de soluções. Buscou-se com esta pesquisa analisar equipamentos e propor um modelo de planta de compostagem para a gestão de resíduos orgânicos do IFFluminense Campus Macaé. De acordo com a realidade do Instituto, conclui-se que a tecnologia de processo ideal é a constituída por um tambor com perfurações que propiciam melhor aeração.

A large part of the oil extracted in Brazil today, is drained to the coast, or even transported to larger vessels through Floating Hoses. This oil unloading operation is called Offloading, it is of fundamental importance for the performance of offshore operations. These operating units use storage systems and oil relief, which can be FSO (Floating Storage Unit and Transfer) or FPSO (Floating Production Unit, Stockpiling and Transfer). In this oil transshipment scenario, floating hoses have primary role therefore they are responsible for this operation. The Floating Hoses after useful life are discarded. How do the environmentally correct disposal of this waste? The destination most used for this waste are the landfills Class 2, for non-hazardous waste. In this study, we attempted to develop appropriate allocation techniques for Floating Hose, in order to obtain a greater appreciation potential of the materials that compose it, as well as presenting the risk of these being put up in a landfill, even if it is a controlled landfill. This technique is based on a so-called Reverse Manufacturing, all components are reused and recovered, with a more environmentally sound and economically viable destination. The research methodology was based on empirical studies of phenomenological framework, involving operational staff of a medium-sized company with a rising share of Treatment and Waste Disposal Market, in the city of Macaé. It was evidenced in the survey that there is a possibility of potential gains from the application of reverse manufacturing techniques of hoses, both in terms of environmental liability reductions and the financial return through the recovery of materials that compose them.

The building industry has occupied a prominent place in the Brazilian economy. However it may represent serious environmental impacts in the generation and improper disposal of waste from construction and demolition (C&D). The research aimed at evaluating the initiatives of public management of C&D in the county of Macaé, RJ. It was based on the empirical-phenomenological methods, with individual descriptions and causal connections obtained from stakeholders, literature and documentary reviews, as well as qualified interviews (key informants) with local managers and specialists. Preliminary results have allowed for an assessment of the current situation of management, legal instruments, environmental licensing, and irregular disposal of C&D.

O aumento da geração de resíduos sólidos surge em paralelo com o desenvolvimento econômico. Por isso, o gerenciamento dos resíduos sólidos converge para uma importância crescente, sendo fundamental a coerência ambiental, econômica e social. Nesse sentido, o Centro Didático-Pedagógico surge como alternativa para o gerenciamento dos resíduos sólidos no IFFluminense – Campus Macaé, mas, vale considerar que também tende a promover a inclusão social, viabilizar ganhos sociais a partir da capacitação profissional de pessoas de baixa renda, em escala piloto e conferir benefícios ambientais, a partir da destinação correta dos resíduos gerados, não só para o IFFluminense – Campus Macaé, como também para o município de Macaé.

Cancer continues to be one of the most important health problems worldwide, and the identification of novel drugs and treatments to address this disease is urgent. During recent years, marine organisms have proven to be a promising source of new compounds with action against tumoral cell lines. Here, we describe the synthesis and anticancer activity of eight new 3-alkylpyridine alkaloid (3-APA) analogs in four steps and with good yields. The key step for the synthesis of these compounds is a Williamson etherification under phase-transfer conditions. We investigated the influence of the length of the alkyl chain attached to position 3 of the pyridine ring on the cytotoxicity of these compounds. Biological assays demonstrated that compounds with an alkyl chain of ten carbon atoms (4c and 5c) were the most active against two tumoral cell lines: RKO-AS-45-1 and HeLa. Micronucleus and TUNEL assays showed that both compounds are mutagenic and induce apoptosis. In addition, Compound 5c altered the cellular actin cytoskeleton in RKO-AS-45-1 cells. The results suggest that Compounds 4c and 5c may be novel prototype anticancer agents.

The Environmental Preservation Area (EPA) of Sana is a Municipal Conservation Unit with private and public lands in the rural area of Macaé. This region has been densely occupied, due to the increase of tourism and urban rowth. This EPA has a Management Plan and Environmental Zoning to regulate nature conservation with sustainable use of local natural resources. As the Environmental Zoning is the most important tool to support decisions made by EPA, an evaluation of the cartographic adequacy of its limits was conducted in this study

The Lake District (“Região dos Lagos”) in the State of Rio de Janeiro does not have a waste inventory or any systemized reliable data related to waste generation. Its municipalities also do not present combined management procedures in order to mitigate the enormous environmental liabilities due to solid waste disposal in inappropriate landfills. This paper aims to estimate and classify solid waste originated in the cities of Armação dos Búzios, Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio, and São Pedro da Aldeia, by analyzing socio-economic data and considering local GDP.

The Environmental Preservation Area (EPA) in Sana, Macaé, Rio de Janeiro State went through a historical process of deforestation resulting from agriculture and livestock production. Recently, this area has been occupied in unplanned ways, due to its tourist attractions and real estate speculation. A major negative impact in the region is forest fragmentation. Based on the concept of landscape management, we propose a study to identify the priority fragments to conservation and recovery in the EPA. Results of this project are essential support tools to assist the manager in the environmental planning of the EPA in its process of monitoring, inspection and management.

This article presents a thematic exploration of the environmental degradation in the Macaé River Hydrographic Basin. The objective was to provide a cartographic base on relevant issues regarding the Basin, by doing environmental assessment with support of geoprocessing. This aims at providing assistance for public actions in environmental decisions, and suggest applications of data in local and/or regional plannings that may support the development of the Basin Plan. The AHP method – Hierarchic Analytical Process – was used. The resulting map shows the areas of potential environmental degradation, in which those with greater susceptibility are located at the top and middle sections of the river, and the less likely are found on its lower course.

This article presents discussions on the Water Resources Information System in Brazil , and evaluates new technologies for supporting integrated water resources management. The study also discusses the processes of generating, gathering, and analysing information using conceptual models with support of Geographical Information Systems.

Este artigo é resultado da compilação entre duas linhas de pesquisas desenvolvidas no Instituto Federal Fluminense campus Campos-Centro. Uma estudando os impactos territoriais do Porto do Açu, coordenada pelo professor Luiz de Pinedo Quinto Junior, tendo Matheus Crespo como bolsista pesquisador. Outra que estuda a elaboração de um Atlas Hidrográfico para a IX Região Hidrográfica/RJ, através de Sistema de Informação Geográfica, coordenada pelo professor José Augusto Ferreira da Silva, tendo Rafael Espinoza e Gilcélio de Souza como bolsistas pesquisadores. Propõe-se com este artigo pensar a reorganização territorial, visando a um planejamento ambiental, para a região Norte Fluminense, a partir da implantação do Complexo Portuário e Industrial do Açu e seus impactos. Para tanto, propõem-se três estratégias norteadoras do planejamento urbano-ambiental, que são: análise geomorfológica da região em estudo; repensar o sistema de macrodrenagem; e, por último, a utilização do Sistema de Informações Geográficas como recurso de apoio à gestão do território.

Urban centers’ spontaneous and disordered occupation processes bring difficulty to harmonic development in cities. Such processes cause excessive extension of urban tissue, disturbing infrastructure and basic services implantation. Besides its contribution to functional disintegration of urban space, spontaneous occupation makes transport net implementation and planning harder. In Campos dos Goytacazes city, studied in the present work, as in other Brazilian cities, that type of occupation occur in a huge variety of environments, of which urban lagoons can be detached. This research aimed to enlighten this phenomenon in the region of Vigário Lagoon, in order to propose environmental mitigating measures and legal adequacy strategies to guarantee environmental quality for resident and nearby population.

É apresentado o caso de paciente de 49 anos, sexo feminino, com ecocardiograma e cateterismo cardíaco mostrando massa intra-atrial esquerda, sugerindo mixoma, encaminhada para avaliação cardiológica devido à dispnéia. A paciente era ainda portadora de hepatoesplenomegalia esquistossomótica. Após preparo pré-operatório, que incluiu assistência hematológica, a paciente foi submetida a tratamento cirúrgico, com auxílio de circulação extracorpórea. Apresentou sangramento aumentado no pós-operatório imediato, melhorando após transfusão de plaquetas. O estudo anatomopatológico revelou tratar-se de hemangioma capilar benigno.A 49-year-old woman, whose echocardiography and hemodynamic study showed a mass in the left atrium suggestive of myxoma, was referred for cardiological evaluation because of dyspnea. She also had schistosomotic hepatosplenomegaly. After a preoperative evaluation with hematological assistance, the patient underwent surgery using a cardiopulmonary bypass. She suffered a hemorrhage in the immediate post-operative period, which improved after platelet transfusion. The histopathologic study showed a capillary-type cardiac hemangioma.

Descreve-se a reação da população de Curitiba, PR -- cidade com aproximadamente 1,6 milhões de habitantes --, ao ruído ambiental . Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionários distribuídos aleatoriamente a moradores da cidade. Dos 1.000 questionários distribuídos, 860 (86%) foram avaliados. As principais fontes de ruído causadoras de incômodo identificadas foram o tráfego de veículos (73%) e os vizinhos (38%), sendo que estes foram classificados como a principal fonte de desconforto. Todos os respondentes apontaram pelo menos um dos seguintes itens como geradores de ruído: vizinhos, animais, sirenes, construção civil, templos religiosos, casas noturnas, brinquedos e aparelhos domésticos. As principais reações ao ruído foram: irritabilidade (58%), baixa concentração (42%), insônia (20%) e dores de cabeça (20%).The study describes people's reaction to environmental noise in Curitiba, a city of approximately 1.6 million inhabitants in Brazil. Data was collected using questionnaires randomly delivered to the city's residents. Out of 1,000 questionnaires, 860 (86%) were returned and assessed. The main noise sources found as disturbing were motor vehicle traffic (73%) and neighbors (38%), which were rated as producing the most disturbing noise. All respondents pointed out at least one of the following as noise sources: neighbors, animals, sirens, civil construction, religious worship temples, nightclubs, toys, and domestic electric appliances. The main reactions to noise exposure were: irritability (58%), difficulty to concentrate (42%), sleeping disorders (20%), and headaches (20%).

We present a case of a 58 year old white male who entered the hospital with abdominal pain and developed large bowel obstruction, simulating malignant disease. Anatomopathological examination showed abdominal actinomycosis, a rare presentation of this disease.
