In contrast to Shannon transmission codes, the size of identification (ID) codes for discrete memoryless channels (DMCs) experiences doubly exponential growth with the block length when randomized encoding is used. Additional enhancements within the ID paradigm can be realized through supplementary resources such as quantum entanglement, common randomness (CR), and feedback. Joint transmission and sensing demonstrate significant benefits over separation-based methods. Inspired by the significant impact of feedback on the ID capacity, our work delves into the realm of joint ID and sensing (JIDAS) for state-dependent multiple access channels (SD-MACs) with noiseless strictly casual feedback. Here, the senders aim to convey ID messages to the receiver while simultaneously sensing the channel states. We establish a lower bound on the capacity-distortion region of the SD-MACs. An example shows that JIDAS outperforms the separation-based approach.

We investigate message identification over a K-sender Gaussian multiple access channel (K-GMAC). Unlike conventional Shannon transmission codes, the size of randomized identification (ID) codes experiences a doubly exponential growth in the code length. Improvements in the ID approach can be attained through additional resources such as quantum entanglement, common randomness (CR), and feedback. It has been demonstrated that an infinite capacity can be attained for a single-user Gaussian channel with noiseless feedback, irrespective of the chosen rate scaling. We establish the capacity region of both the K-sender Gaussian multiple access channel (K-GMAC) and the K-sender state-dependent Gaussian multiple access channel (K-SD-GMAC) when strictly causal noiseless feedback is available.

In this paper, we develop energy-efficient schemes for multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast channels (BCs), assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). To this end, we consider three architectures of RIS: locally passive diagonal (LP-D), globally passive diagonal (GP-D), and globally passive beyond diagonal (GP-BD). In a globally passive RIS, the power of the output signal of the RIS is not greater than its input power, but some RIS elements can amplify the signal. In a locally passive RIS, every element cannot amplify the incident signal. We show that these RIS architectures can substantially improve energy efficiency (EE) if the static power of the RIS elements is not too high. Extremely large-scale antenna arrays (ELAA) play a critical role in enabling the functionalities of next generation wireless communication systems. However, as the number of antennas increases, ELAA systems face significant bottlenecks, such as excessive interconnection costs and high computational complexity. Efficient distributed signal processing (SP) algorithms show great promise in overcoming these challenges. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of distributed SP algorithms for ELAA systems, tailored to address these bottlenecks. We start by presenting three representative forms of ELAA systems: single-base station ELAA systems, coordinated distributed antenna systems, and ELAA systems integrated with emerging technologies. For each form, we review the associated distributed SP algorithms in the literature. There is a growing interest in models that extend beyond Shannon's classical transmission scheme, renowned for its channel capacity formula $C$. One such promising direction is message identification via channels, introduced by Ahlswede and Dueck. Unlike in Shannon's classical model, where the receiver aims to determine which message was sent from a set of $M$ messages, message identification focuses solely on discerning whether a specific message $m$ was transmitted. The encoder can operate deterministically or through randomization, with substantial advantages observed particularly in the latter approach. While Shannon's model allows transmission of $M = 2^{nC}$ messages, Ahlswede and Dueck's model facilitates the identification of $M = 2^{2^{nC}}$ messages, exhibiting a double exponential growth in block length. In their seminal paper, Ahlswede and Dueck established the achievability and introduced a "soft" converse bound. Subsequent works have further refined this, culminating in a strong converse bound, applicable under specific conditions. Watanabe's contributions have notably enhanced the applicability of the converse bound. The aim of this survey is multifaceted: to grasp the formalism and proof techniques outlined in the aforementioned works, analyze Watanabe's converse, trace the evolution from earlier converses to Watanabe's, emphasizing key similarities and differences that underpin the enhancements. Furthermore, we explore the converse proof for message identification with feedback, also pioneered by Ahlswede and Dueck. By elucidating how their approaches were inspired by preceding proofs, we provide a comprehensive overview. This overview paper seeks to offer readers insights into diverse converse techniques for message identification, with a focal point on the seminal works of Hayashi, Watanabe, and, in the context of feedback, Ahlswede and Dueck.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) cell-free massive MIMO (CF mMIMO) is a promising solution for future wireless communications. However, its optimization is non-trivial due to the challenging channel characteristics. We show that mmWave CF mMIMO optimization is largely an assignment problem between access points (APs) and users due to the high path loss of mmWave channels, the limited output power of the amplifier, and the almost orthogonal channels between users given a large number of AP antennas. The combinatorial nature of the assignment problem, the requirement for scalability, and the distributed implementation of CF mMIMO make this problem difficult. In this work, we propose an unsupervised machine learning (ML) enabled solution. In particular, a graph neural network (GNN) customized for scalability and distributed implementation is introduced. Moreover, the customized GNN architecture is hierarchically permutation-equivariant (HPE), i.e., if the APs or users of an AP are permuted, the output assignment is automatically permuted in the same way. To address the combinatorial problem, we relax it to a continuous problem, and introduce an information entropy-inspired penalty term. The training objective is then formulated using the augmented Lagrangian method (ALM). The test results show that the realized sum-rate outperforms that of the generalized serial dictatorship (GSD) algorithm and is very close to the upper bound in a small network scenario, while the upper bound is impossible to obtain in a large network scenario.

This paper addresses the problem of maximizing the capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS). We maximize the capacity by alternately optimizing the transmit covariance matrix, and the BD-RIS scattering matrix, which, according to network theory, should be unitary and symmetric. These constraints make the optimization of BD-RIS more challenging than that of diagonal RIS. To find a stationary point of the capacity we maximize a sequence of quadratic problems in the manifold of unitary matrices. This leads to an efficient algorithm that always improves the capacity obtained by a diagonal RIS. Through simulation examples, we study the capacity improvement provided by a passive BD-RIS architecture over the conventional RIS model in which the phase shift matrix is diagonal., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Multiple access techniques are cornerstones of wireless communications. Their performance depends on the channel properties, which can be improved by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this work, we jointly optimize MA precoding at the base station (BS) and RIS configuration. We tackle difficulties of mutual coupling between RIS elements, scalability to more than 1000 RIS elements, and channel estimation. We first derive an RIS-assisted channel model considering mutual coupling, then propose an unsupervised machine learning (ML) approach to optimize the RIS. In particular, we design a dedicated neural network (NN) architecture RISnet with good scalability and desired symmetry. Moreover, we combine ML-enabled RIS configuration and analytical precoding at BS since there exist analytical precoding schemes. Furthermore, we propose another variant of RISnet, which requires the channel state information (CSI) of a small portion of RIS elements (in this work, 16 out of 1296 elements) if the channel comprises a few specular propagation paths. More generally, this work is an early contribution to combine ML technique and domain knowledge in communication for NN architecture design. Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems with multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently been explored to support energy-limited devices via simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT). The energy consumption, however, becomes considerable by increasing the number of incorporated LEDs. This paper proposes a joint dimming (JD) scheme that lowers the consumed power of a SLIPT-enabled OWC system by controlling the number of active LEDs. We further enhance the data rate of this system by utilizing rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). More specifically, we formulate a data rate maximization problem to optimize the beamforming design, LED selection and RSMA rate adaptation that guarantees the power budget of the OWC transmitter, as well as the quality-of-service (QoS) and an energy harvesting level for users. We propose a dynamic resource allocation solution based on proximal policy optimization (PPO) reinforcement learning. In simulations, the optimal dimming level is determined to initiate a trade-off between the data rate and power consumption. Modern wireless communication systems are expected to provide improved latency and reliability. To meet these expectations, a short packet length is needed, which makes the first-order Shannon rate an inaccurate performance metric for such communication systems. A more accurate approximation of the achievable rates of finite-block-length (FBL) coding regimes is known as the normal approximation (NA). It is therefore of substantial interest to study the optimization of the FBL rate in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which each user may transmit and/or receive multiple data streams. Hence, we formulate a general optimization problem for improving the spectral and energy efficiency of multi-user MIMO-aided ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) systems, which are assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We show that a RIS is capable of substantially improving the performance of multi-user MIMO-aided URLLC systems. Moreover, the benefits of RIS increase as the packet length and/or the tolerable bit error rate are reduced. This reveals that RISs can be even more beneficial in URLLC systems for improving the FBL rates than in conventional systems approaching Shannon rates.

CF-mMIMO systems are a promising solution to enhance the performance in 6G wireless networks. Its distributed nature of the architecture makes it highly reliable, provides sufficient coverage and allows higher performance than cellular networks. EE is an important metric that reduces the operating costs and also better for the environment. In this work, we optimize the downlink EE performance with MRT precoding and power allocation. Our aim is to achieve a less complex, distributed and scalable solution. To achieve this, we apply unsupervised ML with permutation equivariant architecture and use a non-convex objective function with multiple local optima. We compare the performance with the centralized and computationally expensive SCA. The results indicate that the proposed approach can outperform the baseline with significantly less computation time.

This work considers an asynchronous $\textsf{K}_\text{a}$-active-user unsourced multiple access channel (AUMAC) with the worst-case asynchronicity. The transmitted messages must be decoded within $n$ channel uses, while some codewords are not completely received due to asynchronicities. We consider a constraint of the largest allowed delay of the transmission. The AUMAC lacks the permutation-invariant property of the synchronous UMAC since different permutations of the same codewords with a fixed asynchronicity are distinguishable. Hence, the analyses require calculating all $2^{\textsf{K}_\text{a}}-1$ combinations of erroneously decoded messages. Moreover, transmitters cannot adapt the corresponding codebooks according to asynchronicity due to a lack of information on asynchronicities. To overcome this challenge, a uniform bound of the per-user probability of error (PUPE) is derived by investigating the worst-case of the asynchronous patterns with the delay constraint. Numerical results show the trade-off between the energy-per-bit and the number of active users for different delay constraints. In addition, although the asynchronous transmission reduces interference, the required energy-per-bit increases as the receiver decodes with incompletely received codewords, compared to the synchronous case.

Mathematical optimization is now widely regarded as an indispensable modeling and solution tool for the design of wireless communications systems. While optimization has played a significant role in the revolutionary progress in wireless communication and networking technologies from 1G to 5G and onto the future 6G, the innovations in wireless technologies have also substantially transformed the nature of the underlying mathematical optimization problems upon which the system designs are based and have sparked significant innovations in the development of methodologies to understand, to analyze, and to solve those problems. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of recent advances in mathematical optimization theory and algorithms for wireless communication system design. We begin by illustrating common features of mathematical optimization problems arising in wireless communication system design. We discuss various scenarios and use cases and their associated mathematical structures from an optimization perspective. We then provide an overview of recently developed optimization techniques in areas ranging from nonconvex optimization, global optimization, and integer programming, to distributed optimization and learning-based optimization. The key to successful solution of mathematical optimization problems is in carefully choosing or developing suitable algorithms (or neural network architectures) that can exploit the underlying problem structure. An emerging technology to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems is reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is shown to be very powerful in single-carrier systems. However, in multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, RIS may not be as promising as in single-carrier systems since an independent optimization of RIS elements at each sub-carrier is impossible in multi-carrier systems. Thus, this paper investigates the performance of various RIS technologies like regular (reflective and passive), simultaneously transmit and reflect (STAR), and multi-sector beyond diagonal (BD) RIS in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM broadcast channels (BC). This requires to formulate and solve a joint MIMO precoding and RIS optimization problem. The obtained solution reveals that RIS can significantly improve the system performance even when the number of RIS elements is relatively low. Moreover, we develop resource allocation schemes for STAR-RIS and multi-sector BD-RIS in MIMO OFDM BCs, and show that these RIS technologies can outperform a regular RIS, especially when the regular RIS cannot assist the communications for all the users.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) is a novel technology which enables the full-space coverage. In this letter, a multi STAR-RIS-aided system using non-orthogonal multiple access in an uplink transmission is considered, where the multi-order reflections among multiple STAR-RISs assist the transmission from the single-antenna users to the multi-antenna base station. Specifically, the total sum rate maximization problem is solved by jointly optimizing the active beamforming, power allocation, transmission and reflection beamforming at the STAR-RIS, and user-STAR-RIS assignment. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed which integrates meta-learning and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), denoted by Meta-DDPG. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed Meta-DDPG algorithm outperforms the conventional DDPG algorithm with $53\%$ improvement, while multi-order reflections among multi STAR-RISs yields to $14.1\%$ enhancement in the total data rate.

This article introduces a new approach to address the spectrum scarcity challenge in 6G networks by implementing the enhanced licensed shared access (ELSA) framework. Our proposed auction mechanism aims to ensure fairness in spectrum allocation to mobile network operators (MNOs) through a novel weighted auction called the fair Vickery-Clarke-Groves (FVCG) mechanism. Through comparison with traditional methods, the study demonstrates that the proposed auction method improves fairness significantly. We suggest using spectrum sensing and integrating UAV-based networks to enhance efficiency of the LSA system. This research employs two methods to solve the problem. We first propose a novel greedy algorithm, named market share based weighted greedy algorithm (MSWGA) to achieve better fairness compared to the traditional auction methods and as the second approach, we exploit deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms, to optimize the auction policy and demonstrate its superiority over other methods. Simulation results show that the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method performs superior to soft actor critic (SAC), MSWGA, and greedy methods. Moreover, a significant improvement is observed in fairness index compared to the traditional greedy auction methods. We consider a two-user Gaussian interference channel with heterogeneous blocklength constraints (HB-GIC), strong interference, and two private messages. We propose to apply the successive interference cancellation with early decoding, i.e., decoding a message with a number of received symbols less than the blocklength at the receiver. We determine the necessary number of received symbols to achieve successful decoding of the longer codeword that satisfies the input power constraints and target average error probability constraints. To attain the results, we investigate the dependence testing bound analysis over an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian input. Besides, we derive the second-order achievable rate region of the considered HB-GIC. By numerical results based on the rate-profile approach, we compare the derived second-order rate region to the first-order one, which shows the rate back-off of the considered model due to the impact of finite blocklength., Comment: 4 figures

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. By optimizing the RIS elements, the performance of the overall system can be improved. This paper proposes schemes to improve the spectral efficiency of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with I/Q imbalance (IQI) at transceivers by employing a combination of improper Gaussian signaling (IGS), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and simultaneously transmit and reflect (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). When there exists IQI, the output RF signal is a widely linear transformation of the input signal, which may make the output signal improper. To compensate for IQI, we employ IGS, thus generating a transmit improper signal. We show that IGS alongside with NOMA can highly increase the minimum rate of the users. Moreover, we propose schemes for different operational modes of STAR-RIS and show that STAR-RIS can significantly improve the system performance. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) architectures not limited to diagonal phase shift matrices have recently been considered to increase their flexibility in shaping the wireless channel. One of these beyond-diagonal RIS or BD-RIS architectures leads to a unitary and symmetric RIS matrix. In this letter, we consider the problem of maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in single and multiple antenna links assisted by a BD-RIS. The Max-SNR problem admits a closed-form solution based on the Takagi factorization of a certain complex and symmetric matrix. This paper proposes a general optimization framework for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in beyond diagonal (BD) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) systems. This framework can provide a suboptimal solution for a large family of optimization problems in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or energy efficiency (EE) of users. Using this framework, we show that RSMA and RIS can be mutually beneficial tools when the system is overloaded, i.e., when the number of users per cell is higher than the number of base station (BS) antennas. Additionally, we show that the benefits of RSMA increase when the packets are shorter and/or the reliability constraint is more stringent. Furthermore, we show that the RSMA benefits increase with the number of users per cell and decrease with the number of BS antennas. This paper proposes an energy-efficient scheme for multicell multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) simultaneous transmit and reflect (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-assisted broadcast channels by employing rate splitting (RS) and improper Gaussian signaling (IGS). Regular RISs can only reflect signals. Thus, a regular RIS can assist only when the transmitter and receiver are in the reflection space of the RIS. However, a STAR-RIS can simultaneously transmit and reflect, thus providing a 360-degrees coverage. In this paper, we assume that transceivers may suffer from I/Q imbalance (IQI). To compensate for IQI, we employ IGS. Moreover, we employ RS to manage intracell interference. We show that RIS can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) of the system when RIS components are carefully optimized. Additionally, we show that STAR-RIS can significantly outperform a regular RIS when the regular RIS cannot cover all the users. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with multi-antenna base station (BS) is a promising technology for next-generation wireless communication, which has high potential in performance and user fairness. Since the performance of NOMA depends on the channel conditions, we can combine NOMA and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is a large and passive antenna array and can optimize the wireless channel. However, the high dimensionality makes the RIS optimization a complicated problem. In this work, we propose a machine learning approach to solve the problem of joint optimization of precoding and RIS configuration. We apply the RIS to realize the quasi-degradation of the channel, which allows for optimal precoding in closed form. The neural network architecture RISnet is used, which is designed dedicatedly for RIS optimization. The proposed solution is superior to the works in the literature in terms of performance and computation time.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that enables wireless communication systems to achieve improved performance by intelligently manipulating wireless channels. In this paper, we consider the sum-rate maximization problem in a downlink multi-user multi-input-single-output (MISO) channel via space-division multiple access (SDMA). Two major challenges of this problem are the high dimensionality due to the large number of RIS elements and the difficulty to obtain the full channel state information (CSI), which is assumed known in many algorithms proposed in the literature. Instead, we propose a hybrid machine learning approach using the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) precoder at the base station (BS) and a dedicated neural network (NN) architecture, RISnet, for RIS configuration. The RISnet has a good scalability to optimize 1296 RIS elements and requires partial CSI of only 16 RIS elements as input. We show it achieves a high performance with low requirement for channel estimation for geometric channel models obtained with ray-tracing simulation. The unsupervised learning lets the RISnet find an optimized RIS configuration by itself. Numerical results show that a trained model configures the RIS with low computational effort, considerably outperforms the baselines, and can work with discrete phase shifts.

In this paper, we develop a hierarchical aerial computing framework composed of high altitude platform (HAP) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to compute the fully offloaded tasks of terrestrial mobile users which are connected through an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (UL-NOMA). To better assess the freshness of information in computation-intensive applications the criterion of age of information (AoI) is considered. In particular, the problem is formulated to minimize the average AoI of users with elastic tasks, by adjusting UAVs trajectory and resource allocation on both UAVs and HAP, which is restricted by the channel state information (CSI) uncertainty and multiple resource constraints of UAVs and HAP. In order to solve this non-convex optimization problem, two methods of multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) and federated reinforcement learning (FRL) are proposed to design the UAVs trajectory, and obtain channel, power, and CPU allocations. It is shown that task scheduling significantly reduces the average AoI. This improvement is more pronounced for larger task sizes. On one hand, it is shown that power allocation has a marginal effect on the average AoI compared to using full transmission power for all users. Compared with traditional transmission schemes, the simulation results show our scheduling scheme results in a substantial improvement in average AoI.

We address the problem of interference leakage (IL) minimization in the $K$-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel (IC) assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We describe an iterative algorithm based on block coordinate descent to minimize the IL cost function. A reformulation of the problem provides a geometric interpretation and shows interesting connections with envelope precoding and phase-only zero-forcing beamforming problems. For energy efficient operation of the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks, various aspects of energy efficiency maximization have been addressed, where a careful selection of number of active antennas has shown significant gains. Moreover, switching-off physical resource blocks (PRBs) and carrier shutdown saves energy in low load scenarios. However, the joint optimization of spectral PRB allocation and spatial layering in a heterogeneous network has not been completely solved yet. Therefore, we study a power consumption model for multi-cell multi-user massive MIMO 5G network, capturing the joint effects of both dimensions. We characterize the optimal resource allocation under practical constraints, i.e., limited number of available antennas, PRBs, base stations (BSs), and frequency bands. We observe a single spatial layer achieving lowest energy consumption in very low load scenarios, whereas, spatial layering is required in high load scenarios. Finally, we derive novel algorithms for energy efficient user to BS assignment and propose an adaptive algorithm for PRB assignment and power control. All results are illustrated by numerical system-level simulations, describing a realistic metropolis scenario. The results show that a higher frequency band should be used to support users with large rate requirements via spatial multiplexing and assigning each user maximum available PRBs.

In this paper, we design a new flexible smart software-defined radio access network (Soft-RAN) architecture with traffic awareness for sixth generation (6G) wireless networks. In particular, we consider a hierarchical resource allocation model for the proposed smart soft-RAN model where the software-defined network (SDN) controller is the first and foremost layer of the framework. This unit dynamically monitors the network to select a network operation type on the basis of distributed or centralized resource allocation procedures to intelligently perform decision-making. In this paper, our aim is to make the network more scalable and more flexible in terms of conflicting performance indicators such as achievable data rate, overhead, and complexity indicators. To this end, we introduce a new metric, i.e., throughput-overhead-complexity (TOC), for the proposed machine learning-based algorithm, which supports a trade-off between these performance indicators. In particular, the decision making based on TOC is solved via deep reinforcement learning (DRL) which determines an appropriate resource allocation policy. Furthermore, for the selected algorithm, we employ the soft actor-critic (SAC) method which is more accurate, scalable, and robust than other learning methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed smart network achieves better performance in terms of TOC compared to fixed centralized or distributed resource management schemes that lack dynamism. In this paper, we study the achievable rate region of 1-layer rate splitting (RS) in the presence of hardware impairment (HWI) and improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) for a single-cell reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted broadcast channel (BC). We assume that the transceivers may suffer from an imbalance in in-band and quadrature signals, which is known as I/Q imbalance (IQI). The received signal and noise can be improper when there exists IQI. Therefore, we employ IGS to compensate for IQI as well as to manage interference. Our results show that RS and RIS can significantly enlarge the rate region, where the role of RS is to manage interference while RIS mainly improves the coverage.

This paper proposes a general optimization framework to improve the spectral and energy efficiency (EE) of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) simultaneous-transfer-and-receive (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted interference-limited systems with finite block length (FBL). This framework can solve a large variety of optimization problems in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or EE of users. Additionally, the framework can be applied to any interference-limited system with treating interference as noise as the decoding strategy at receivers. We consider a multi-cell broadcast channel as an example and show how this framework can be specialized to solve the minimum-weighted rate, weighted sum rate, global EE and weighted EE of the system. We make realistic assumptions regarding the (STAR-)RIS by considering three different feasibility sets for the components of either regular RIS or STAR-RIS. Our results show that RIS can substantially increase the spectral and EE of URLLC systems if the reflecting coefficients are properly optimized. Moreover, we consider three different transmission strategies for STAR-RIS as energy splitting (ES), mode switching (MS), and time switching (TS). We show that STAR-RIS can outperform a regular RIS when the regular RIS cannot cover all the users. The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for next-generation wireless communication. It comprises many passive antennas, which reflect signals from the transmitter to the receiver with adjusted phases without changing the amplitude. The large number of the antennas enables a huge potential of signal processing despite the simple functionality of a single antenna. However, it also makes the RIS configuration a high dimensional problem, which might not have a closed-form solution and has a high complexity and, as a result, severe difficulty in online real-time application if we apply iterative numerical solutions. In this paper, we introduce a machine learning approach to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR). We propose a dedicated neural network architecture called RISNet. The RIS optimization is designed according to the RIS property of product and direct channel and homogeneous RIS antennas. The architecture is scalable due to the fact that the number of trainable parameters is independent from the number of RIS antennas (because all antennas share the same parameters). The weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) precoding is applied and an alternating optimization (AO) training procedure is designed. Testing results show that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. Moreover, although the training takes several hours, online testing with trained model (application) is almost instant, which makes it feasible for real-time application. Compared to it, the BCD algorithm requires much more convergence time. Therefore, the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithm in both performance and complexity.

This work presents a machine learning approach to optimize the energy efficiency (EE) in a multi-cell wireless network. This optimization problem is non-convex and its global optimum is difficult to find. In the literature, either simple but suboptimal approaches or optimal methods with high complexity and poor scalability are proposed. In contrast, we propose a machine learning framework to approach the global optimum. While the neural network (NN) training takes moderate time, application with the trained model requires very low computational complexity. In particular, we introduce a novel objective function based on stochastic actions to solve the non-convex optimization problem. Besides, we design a dedicated NN architecture for the multi-cell network optimization problems that is permutation-equivariant. It classifies channels according to their roles in the EE computation. In this way, we encode our domain knowledge into the NN design and shed light into the black box of machine learning. Training and testing results show that the proposed method without supervision and with reasonable computational effort achieves an EE close to the global optimum found by the branch-and-bound algorithm. Hence, the proposed approach balances between computational complexity and performance.

We consider a multi-user two-ray ground reflection scenario with unknown distances between transmitter and receivers. By using two frequencies per user in parallel, we can mitigate possible destructive interference and ensure ultra-reliability with only very limited knowledge at the transmitter. In this work, we consider the problem of assigning two frequencies to each receiver in a multi-user communication system such that the average minimum receive power is maximized. In order to solve this problem, we introduce a generalization of the quadratic multiple knapsack problem to include heterogeneous profits and develop an algorithm to solve it. Algorithms based on combinatorial auctions show significant potential regarding their application for channel assignment problems in multi-connectivity ultra-reliable wireless networks. However the computational effort required by such algorithms grows fast with the number of users and resources. Therefore, preallocation-based combinatorial auction represents a promising approach for these setups. The aim of the preallocation is to constrain the number of bids submitted by participants in the combinatorial auction process, thus reducing computational demands and enabling numerical feasibility of the auction problem. Reduction of bid number is achieved via limiting the number of items (channels) considered by auction participants (tenants) in their bids. Thus the aim of preallocation is to non-exclusively assign channels to tenants. This assignment serves as a basis for the later bid generation in the auction procedure. In this paper we analyze the optimal parametrization of the many-to-many Gale-Shapley preallocation method and formulate recommendations for optimal performance. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has emerged as a powerful multiple access, interference management, and multi-user strategy for next generation communication systems. In this tutorial, we depart from the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) versus non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) discussion held in 5G, and the conventional multi-user linear precoding approach used in space-division multiple access (SDMA), multi-user and massive MIMO in 4G and 5G, and show how multi-user communications and multiple access design for 6G and beyond should be intimately related to the fundamental problem of interference management. We start from foundational principles of interference management and rate-splitting, and progressively delineate RSMA frameworks for downlink, uplink, and multi-cell networks. We show that, in contrast to past generations of multiple access techniques (OMA, NOMA, SDMA), RSMA offers numerous benefits. We then discuss how those benefits translate into numerous opportunities for RSMA in over forty different applications and scenarios of 6G. We finally address common myths and answer frequently asked questions, opening the discussions to interesting future research avenues. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for rate splitting (RS) techniques in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted systems, possibly with I/Q imbalance (IQI). This framework can be applied to any optimization problem in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or transmit covariance matrices. We consider a two-ray ground reflection scenario with unknown distance between transmitter and receiver. In order to achieve this ultra-reliability, we optimize the frequency spacing such that the worst-case receive power is maximized. Additionally, we provide an algorithm to calculate the optimal frequency spacing. Besides the receive power, we also analyze the achievable rate and outage probability. It is shown that the frequency diversity scheme achieves a significant improvement in terms of reliability over using a single frequency. In this work, we adopt the emerging technology of mobile edge computing (MEC) in the Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for communication-computing systems, to optimize the age of information (AoI) in the network. We assume that tasks are processed jointly on UAVs and BS to enhance edge performance with limited connectivity and computing. Using UAVs and BS jointly with MEC can reduce AoI on the network. To maintain the freshness of the tasks, we formulate the AoI minimization in two-hop communication framework, the first hop at the UAVs and the second hop at the BS. To approach the challenge, we optimize the problem using a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework, called federated reinforcement learning (FRL). In our network we have two types of agents with different states and actions but with the same policy. Our FRL enables us to handle the two-step AoI minimization and UAV trajectory problems. In addition, we compare our proposed algorithm, which has a centralized processing unit to update the weights, with fully decentralized multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG), which enhances the agent's performance. As a result, the suggested algorithm outperforms the MADDPG by about 38\%

In this paper, we study the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in a multicell broadcast channel (BC) that employs improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) jointly with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to optimize either the minimum-weighted rate or the energy efficiency (EE) of the network. We show that although the RIS can significantly improve the system performance, it cannot mitigate interference completely, so we have to employ other interference-management techniques to further improve performance. We show that the proposed NOMA-based IGS scheme can substantially outperform proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) and IGS schemes that treat interference as noise (TIN) in particular when the number of users per cell is larger than the number of base station (BS) antennas (referred to as overloaded networks). In other words, IGS and NOMA complement to each other as interference management techniques in multicell RIS-assisted BCs. The low-cost legitimate intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are applied to the wiretap channel in physical layer security to enhance the secrecy rate. In practice, the eavesdropper can also deploy an IRS, namely illegitimate IRS, to deteriorate the secrecy rate. This paper studies the interplay between a transmitter, a legitimate IRS, and an illegitimate IRS in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) wiretap channel. We formulate a max-min secrecy rate problem, where all the information is available at the transmitter and the receivers. We aim to design an efficient transmit beamforming and phase shifting strategy of the legitimate IRS, under the worst-case secrecy rate achieved based on optimizing the phase-shifting strategy of the illegitimate IRS. We propose three solution methods based on the gradient descent ascent (GDA), the alternate optimization (AO), and the mixed Nash equilibrium (NE) in zero-sum games in strategic form. Simulation results show that for the continuous phase-shifting strategies, AO usually does not guarantee convergence, although it may achieve better performance than GDA in some iterations. GDA usually converges to a stationary point. Multimode fibers hold great promise to advance data rates in optical communications but come with the challenge to compensate for modal crosstalk and mode-dependent losses, resulting in strong distortions. The holographic measurement of the transmission matrix enables not only correcting distortions but also harnessing these effects for creating a confidential data connection between legitimate communication parties, Alice and Bob. The feasibility of this physical-layer-security-based approach is demonstrated experimentally for the first time on a multimode fiber link to which the eavesdropper Eve is physically coupled. Once the proper structured light field is launched at Alice's side, the message can be delivered to Bob, and, simultaneously, the decipherment for an illegitimate wiretapper Eve is destroyed. Within a real communication scenario, we implement wiretap codes and demonstrate confidentiality by quantifying the level of secrecy. Compared to an uncoded data transmission, the amount of securely exchanged data is enhanced by a factor of 538. A two-user downlink network aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface is considered. The weighted sum signal to interference plus noise ratio maximization and the sum rate maximization models are presented, where the precoding vectors and the RIS matrix are jointly optimized. Since the optimization problem is non-convex and difficult, new approximation models are proposed. The upper bounds of the corresponding objective functions are derived and maximized. Two new algorithms based on the alternating direction method of multiplier are proposed. It is proved that the proposed algorithms converge to the KKT points of the approximation models as long as the iteration points converge. Simulation results show the good performances of the proposed models compared to state of the art algorithms.

Network slicing (NwS) is one of the main technologies in the fifth-generation of mobile communication and beyond (5G+). One of the important challenges in the NwS is information uncertainty which mainly involves demand and channel state information (CSI). Demand uncertainty is divided into three types: number of users requests, amount of bandwidth, and requested virtual network functions workloads. Moreover, the CSI uncertainty is modeled by three methods: worst-case, probabilistic, and hybrid. In this paper, our goal is to maximize the utility of the infrastructure provider by exploiting deep reinforcement learning algorithms in end-to-end NwS resource allocation under demand and CSI uncertainties. The proposed formulation is a nonconvex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. To perform robust resource allocation in problems that involve uncertainty, we need a history of previous information. To this end, we use a recurrent deterministic policy gradient (RDPG) algorithm, a recurrent and memory-based approach in deep reinforcement learning. Then, we compare the RDPG method in different scenarios with soft actor-critic (SAC), deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), distributed, and greedy algorithms. The simulation results show that the SAC method is better than the DDPG, distributed, and greedy methods, respectively. Moreover, the RDPG method out performs the SAC approach on average by 70%.

We investigate novel inner and outer bounds on the rate region of a 2-user Gaussian broadcast channel with finite, heterogeneous blocklength constraints (HB-GBC). In particular, we introduce a new, modified Sato-type outer bound that can be applied in the finite blocklength regime and which does not require the same marginal property. We then develop and analyze composite shell codes, which are suitable for the HB-GBC. Especially, to achieve a lower decoding latency for the user with a shorter blocklength constraint when successive interference cancellation is used, we derive the number of symbols needed to successfully early decode the other user's message. We numerically compare our derived outer bound to the best known achievable rate regions. Numerical results show that the new early decoding performance in terms of latency reduction is significantly improved compared to the state of the art, and it performs very close to the asymptotic limit., Comment: 4 Figures

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology for future wireless communication systems. In this work, we consider downlink spatial multiplexing enabled by the RIS for weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization. In the literature, most solutions use alternating gradient-based optimization, which has moderate performance, high complexity, and limited scalability. We propose to apply a fully convolutional network (FCN) to solve this problem, which was originally designed for semantic segmentation of images. The rectangular shape of the RIS and the spatial correlation of channels with adjacent RIS antennas due to the short distance between them encourage us to apply it for the RIS configuration. We design a set of channel features that includes both cascaded channels via the RIS and the direct channel. In the base station (BS), the differentiable minimum mean squared error (MMSE) precoder is used for pretraining and the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) precoder is then applied for fine-tuning, which is nondifferentiable, more complex, but achieves a better performance. Evaluation results show that the proposed solution has higher performance and allows for a faster evaluation than the baselines. Hence it scales better to a large number of antennas, advancing the RIS one step closer to practical deployment.
