Connectedness and integration are essential elements of student satisfaction, academic success, and retention. Despite its importance in the lives of college students, research on connectedness has approached the concept from definitional perspectives other than those of students. This multi-study explores connectedness from the student perspective while drawing from social identity theory and student involvement theory. In Study 1, students described their experiences and perceptions of connectedness in focus groups. Study 2 built on the qualitative findings of Study 1 and empirically tested connectedness as defined by the students. Results of the study indicate the need for a student definition of connectedness and provide practical suggestions for institutions of higher education.

The convenience and flexibility of online learning clearly make it an attractive option for learners in professional development contexts. There is less clarity, however, about how it fares as a vehicle for enabling the applied, practice-oriented outcomes typically associated with professional development learning. This paper presents a case study describing how transfer-of-learning strategies were employed in a continuing professional education (CPE) course developed for practicing pharmacists, called ADAPT (ADapting pharmacists' skills and Approaches to maximize Patients' drug Therapy effectiveness). To gain insight into the extent to which learning was transferred to practice as a result of participation in the course, qualitative data were collected over a 12-month period from participants of the 2010 pilot offering of ADAPT. Participants reported making changes to their practice as a result of participating in the course, and they identified three course features as being particularly useful in facilitating practice transfer: providing learners with (i) a "vision" of targeted outcomes and skills, (ii) "support" to enable them to attain targeted outcomes and skills, and (iii) explicit "preparation for action."

Abstract Background 25-29% of North American family medicine residency programs utilize a pharmacist to teach residents. Little is known about the impact that these pharmacist educators have on residency training. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of residents, residency directors and pharmacists within Canadian family medicine residency programs that employ a pharmacist educator to better understand the impact of the role. Methods Recruitment from three cohorts (residents, residency directors, pharmacists) within family medicine residency programs across Canada for one-on-one semi-structured interviews followed by thematic analysis of anonymized transcript data. Results 11 residents, 6 residency directors and 17 pharmacist educators participated in interviews. Data themes were: (1) strong value of the teaching with respect to improved resident knowledge, confidence and patient care delivery; (2) lack of a formal pharmacotherapy curriculum; (3) desire for expansion of pharmacist teaching; (4) impact of teaching on collaboration; (5) impact of teaching on residency program faculty; and (6) lack of criticism of the role. Conclusions The pharmacist educator role is valued within residency programs across Canada and the role has a positive impact on several important aspects of family medicine resident training. Suggestions for improvement focused on expanding the teaching role and on implementing a formal curriculum for pharmacist educators to follow.

Abstract Background Pharmacists have expanded their roles and responsibilities as a result of primary health care reform. There is currently no consensus on the core competencies for pharmacists working in these evolving practices. The aim of this study was to develop and validate competencies for pharmacists' effective performance in these roles, and in so doing, document the perceived contribution of pharmacists providing collaborative primary health care services. Methods Using a modified Delphi process including assessing perception of the frequency and criticality of performing tasks, we validated competencies important to primary health care pharmacists practising across Canada. Results Ten key informants contributed to competency drafting; thirty-three expert pharmacists replied to a second round survey. The final primary health care pharmacist competencies consisted of 34 elements and 153 sub-elements organized in seven CanMeds-based domains. Highest importance rankings were allocated to the domains of care provider and professional, followed by communicator and collaborator, with the lower importance rankings relatively equally distributed across the manager, advocate and scholar domains. Conclusions Expert pharmacists working in primary health care estimated their most important responsibilities to be related to direct patient care. Competencies that underlie and are required for successful fulfillment of these patient care responsibilities, such as those related to communication, collaboration and professionalism were also highly ranked. These ranked competencies can be used to help pharmacists understand their potential roles in these evolving practices, to help other health care professionals learn about pharmacists' contributions to primary health care, to establish standards and performance indicators, and to prioritize supports and education to maximize effectiveness in this role.

Experiential education is a critical component of any pharmacy undergraduate curriculum. Establishing new, high-quality practice sites can be challenging. We designed a new advanced pharmacy practice experiential rotation suitable for implementation in most community pharmacy settings. The aim of this article is to describe the design of this rotation entitled the Targeted Pharmacy Intervention in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (TPI-IBD) and to determine its impact on student knowledge and confidence using a before-after survey design. The TPI-IBD utilizes a student-delivered intervention as a platform for experiential learning in community pharmacy practice. The TPI was focused on patients with IBD, and implementation was guided by a co-preceptor from the university in collaboration with onsite-preceptors at each pharmacy. The TPI-IBD rotation was delivered from 6 community pharmacies during 5 weeks in 2018. Students conducted standardized monitoring on patients with IBD and met weekly with the university preceptor for case presentations and therapeutic discussions. Electronic charts were maintained by students who were responsible for ensuring detailed documentation on each patient. Knowledge, confidence, and overall satisfaction were assessed by a survey given to students before and after the rotation. Students were highly satisfied with the learning experience and improvements in knowledge and confidence were clearly demonstrated. The TPI strategy was an effective way to expand rotation options in community pharmacy sites with minimal burden on local preceptors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which examined the impact of pharmacist-led medication assessment programs in Canada on medication costs. Topics discussed include benefits of pharmacist-led medication assessments according to studies, comparison of the medication counts before and after the medication assessments, and finding on the medication assessments that follow the policies and procedures of the Saskatchewan Medication Assessment Program (SMAP).
