Abstract Greenspaces are important for sustaining healthy urban environments and their human populations. Yet their capacity to support multiple ecosystem services simultaneously (multiservices) compared with nearby natural ecosystems remains virtually unknown. We conducted a global field survey in 56 urban areas to investigate the influence of urban greenspaces on 23 soil and plant attributes and compared them with nearby natural environments. We show that, in general, urban greenspaces and nearby natural areas support similar levels of soil multiservices, with only six of 23 attributes (available phosphorus, water holding capacity, water respiration, plant cover, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and arachnid richness) significantly greater in greenspaces, and one (available ammonium) greater in natural areas. Further analyses showed that, although natural areas and urban greenspaces delivered a similar number of services at low (>25% threshold) and moderate (>50%) levels of functioning, natural systems supported significantly more functions at high (>75%) levels of functioning. Management practices (mowing) played an important role in explaining urban ecosystem services, but there were no effects of fertilisation or irrigation. Some services declined with increasing site size, for both greenspaces and natural areas. Our work highlights the fact that urban greenspaces are more similar to natural environments than previously reported and underscores the importance of managing urban greenspaces not only for their social and recreational values, but for supporting multiple ecosystem services on which soils and human well-being depends.

Abstract Soil contamination is one of the main threats to ecosystem health and sustainability. Yet little is known about the extent to which soil contaminants differ between urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems. Here we show that urban greenspaces and adjacent natural areas (i.e., natural/semi-natural ecosystems) shared similar levels of multiple soil contaminants (metal(loid)s, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes) across the globe. We reveal that human influence explained many forms of soil contamination worldwide. Socio-economic factors were integral to explaining the occurrence of soil contaminants worldwide. We further show that increased levels of multiple soil contaminants were linked with changes in microbial traits including genes associated with environmental stress resistance, nutrient cycling, and pathogenesis. Taken together, our work demonstrates that human-driven soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces globally, and highlights that soil contaminants have the potential to cause dire consequences for ecosystem sustainability and human wellbeing.

Abstract Background Little is known about the global distribution and environmental drivers of key microbial functional traits such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Soils are one of Earth’s largest reservoirs of ARGs, which are integral for soil microbial competition, and have potential implications for plant and human health. Yet, their diversity and global patterns remain poorly described. Here, we analyzed 285 ARGs in soils from 1012 sites across all continents and created the first global atlas with the distributions of topsoil ARGs. Results We show that ARGs peaked in high latitude cold and boreal forests. Climatic seasonality and mobile genetic elements, associated with the transmission of antibiotic resistance, were also key drivers of their global distribution. Dominant ARGs were mainly related to multidrug resistance genes and efflux pump machineries. We further pinpointed the global hotspots of the diversity and proportions of soil ARGs. Conclusions Together, our work provides the foundation for a better understanding of the ecology and global distribution of the environmental soil antibiotic resistome. Video Abstract

The purpose of this study is to establish the prevalence of barriers to women’s leadership in the family business in terms of invisibility, the glass ceiling effect, and sexism. We conduct eight semi-structured interviews with women holding leading managerial roles in family businesses in Mexico to identify the factors that impede/facilitate their involvement. We apply the theory of planned behavior (TPB) in order to determine how these factors support/constrain women in their roles. We find that some factors and circumstances are critical for women to achieve an important leadership role in the family business. These factors entail levels of education and experience, the extent to which women participate in strategic decision making and governance of the firm, as well as the support of the company’s founder and other family members for these women’s efficacy and self-esteem. These results challenge some of the extant findings in the literature, thus enriching the current perspectives on the leadership role of women in family firms. Moreover, this research is the first attempt to analyze impediments to women under the TPB perspective as well as one of the few studies conducted on the topic in Latin America, specifically in Mexico.

Rising winter air temperature will reduce snow depth and duration over the next century in northern hardwood forests. Reductions in snow depth may affect soil bacteria and fungi directly, but also affect soil microbes indirectly through effects of snowpack loss on plant roots. We incubated root exclusion and root ingrowth cores across a winter climate-elevation gradient in a northern hardwood forest for 29 months to identify direct (i.e., winter snow-mediated) and indirect (i.e., root-mediated) effects of winter snowpack decline on soil bacterial and fungal communities, as well as on potential nitrification and net N mineralization rates. Both winter snowpack decline and root exclusion increased bacterial richness and phylogenetic diversity. Variation in bacterial community composition was best explained by differences in winter snow depth or soil frost across elevation. Root ingrowth had a positive effect on the relative abundance of several bacterial taxonomic orders (e.g., Acidobacterales and Actinomycetales). Nominally saprotrophic (e.g., Saccharomycetales and Mucorales) or mycorrhizal (e.g., Helotiales, Russalales, Thelephorales) fungal taxonomic orders were also affected by both root ingrowth and snow depth variation. However, when grouped together, the relative abundance of saprotrophic fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and ectomycorrhizal fungi were not affected by root ingrowth or snow depth, suggesting that traits in addition to trophic mode will mediate fungal community responses to snowpack decline in northern hardwood forests. Potential soil nitrification rates were positively related to ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea abundance (e.g., Nitrospirales, Nitrosomondales, Nitrosphaerales). Rates of N mineralization were positively and negatively correlated with ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi, respectively, and these relationships were mediated by root exclusion. The results from this study suggest that a declining winter snowpack and its effect on plant roots each have direct effects on the diversity and abundance of soil bacteria and fungal communities that interact to determine rates of soil N cycling in northern hardwood forests.

Substrate and product concentration data obtained by simulating enzyme-substrate reaction rate equations were used to test two proposed kinetic rate constant estimation techniques in this study. In the first technique, the turnover number, k3, was calculated using early transient time domain data, which are difficult to obtain experimentally. The technique used an iterative approach to calculate k3 with a pair of data and the value of k3 could be retrieved with 35% error. The second technique calculated k3 using stationary domain data and the value of k3 could be retrieved with less than 5% error. This second technique also offered internal consistency in the calculation of k3 by calculating k3 both from the intercept and the slope of the linear plot derived in this study. A series of sensitivity analyses was conducted to understand the robustness of the second technique in estimating k3 from simulated data to the changes in the reaction rate constants (k1, k2, and k3) and the initial concentration of enzyme used for simulation. It was found that the second technique generally worked well in the estimation of k3 except for the simulated data for fast substrate conversions such as in the large k3 and [E]0 cases . This latter method, thus, shows promise for the use of late time experimental substrate/product concentration data to obtain k3. Exclusively using late time data avoids the need for difficult and expensive rapid early time measurement techniques for estimating k3. Once a reasonable estimate for k3 is obtained, the initial enzyme value can easily be determined from the maximum velocity constant established from fitting the Michaelis-Menten or Briggs-Haldane equations to substrate and product stationary state domain (late time) data. While the first technique can estimate k3 with only one point in the transient domain, it is suggested that the second method generally be favored since it only requires late-time stationary domain data and appears to be more accurate.Dados de concentração de substrato e de produto obtidos por simulação de equações de velocidade de reação enzima-substrato foram usados neste estudo para testar duas técnicas para estimar constantes cinéticas. Na primeira técnica, a constante, k3, foi calculada utilizando os dados de domínio do tempo inicial de transição, que são difíceis de serem obtidos experimentalmente. A técnica usou uma aproximação iterativa para calcular k3 cujo valor pôde ser estimado com erro de 33%. A segunda técnica calculou k3 usando dados de domínio no estado estacionário e o valor de k3 pôde ser estimado com erro de 5%. Esta segunda técnica também ofereceu uma consistência interna no cálculo de k3, por calculá-lo tanto pela intersecção quanto pela inclinação da reta derivada deste estudo. Uma série de análises de sensibilidade foi realizada para avaliar a robustez da segunda técnica na estimativa de k3 utilizando dados que foram simulados quanto às mudanças nas constantes de taxa de reação (k1, k2 e k3) e na concentração inicial de enzima. Foi encontrado que a segunda técnica, em geral, proporcionou boa estimativa de k3, exceto para os dados simulados para as conversões rápidas de substrato, como no caso de valores elevados de k3 e de [E]o. Este último método, portanto, mostra ser promissor quando se usam dados experimentais tardios da concentração de substrato/produto para obter k3. O uso dados de tempo tardio evita a necessidade do uso de técnicas difíceis e caras na medida de tempo iniciais para estimativa de k3. Uma vez que é obtida uma estimativa razoável de k3, o valor inicial da enzima pode ser facilmente determinado a partir da constante de velocidade máxima estabelecida por ajuste das equações de Michaelis-Menten ou de Briggs-Haldane e partir de dados de substrato e de produtos no estado estacionário (tempo tardio). Enquanto a primeira técnica pode estimar k3 com somente um ponto no regime transiente, sugere-se que o segundo método seja melhor uma vez que ele requer apenas dados do estado estacionário tardio e parece ser mais preciso.

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) mediates protein translocation across the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, including Vibrio cholerae - the causative agent of cholera. All V. cholerae strains examined to date harbor gene clusters encoding a T6SS. Structural similarity and sequence homology between components of the T6SS and the T4 bacteriophage cell-puncturing device suggest that the T6SS functions as a contractile molecular syringe to inject effector molecules into prokaryotic and eukaryotic target cells. Regulation of the T6SS is critical. A subset of V. cholerae strains, including the clinical O37 serogroup strain V52, express T6SS constitutively. In contrast, pandemic strains impose tight control that can be genetically disrupted: mutations in the quorum sensing gene luxO and the newly described regulator gene tsrA lead to constitutive T6SS expression in the El Tor strain C6706. In this report, we examined environmental V. cholerae isolates from the Rio Grande with regard to T6SS regulation. Rough V. cholerae lacking O-antigen carried a nonsense mutation in the gene encoding the global T6SS regulator VasH and did not display virulent behavior towards Escherichia coli and other environmental bacteria. In contrast, smooth V. cholerae strains engaged constitutively in type VI-mediated secretion and displayed virulence towards prokaryotes (E. coli and other environmental bacteria) and a eukaryote (the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum). Furthermore, smooth V. cholerae strains were able to outcompete each other in a T6SS-dependent manner. The work presented here suggests that constitutive T6SS expression provides V. cholerae with an advantage in intraspecific and interspecific competition.

We are far from understanding the spatial patterns of dryland soil carbon and nitrogen stocks and how they vary among different land cover types. We used data from 12,000 sites from 129 countries in global drylands to estimate soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (STN) stocks in different land cover types, explore the factors driving their spatial distribution, and predict the trends under different climate scenarios in global drylands. SOC and STN stocks in the upper 100 cm reached 419.5 and 38.2 Pg, respectively, with the upper 0–30 cm accounting for half of them. The largest SOC stocks were found in forests, shrublands and grasslands, while STN stocks peaked in forests, bare areas and croplands. The factors driving the spatial patterns of SOC and STN varied among soil depths, with mean annual temperature, pH and aridity being the main factors driving the spatial patterns in SOC and STN density for 0–30 cm, and soil texture the strongest factor for 60–100 cm. Under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 scenario, SOC and STN stocks were predicted to decrease by 3.6 % and 4.0 %, respectively, from 2020 to 2100, whereas under the RCP 8.5 scenario, the projected decreases were 5.9 % and 6.4 % respectively. Our results indicate that if we want to accurately predict C and N accumulation, and design effective mitigation measures in terrestrial ecosystems under future climatic scenarios, we need to better explore the drivers that operate at the deeper soil depths, which also accumulate a significant amount of SOC and STN.

Iberian peatlands have been severely affected by land use and land cover (LULC) changes. Despite these pressures, some peatlands persist in the region, although their susceptibility to LULC change remains poorly understood. This study presents the most detailed and extensive distribution data for Iberian peatlands to date and analyzes the dynamics and drivers of LULC in Iberian peatlands and their surrounding areas. We compiled peatland records from various sources and used Corine Land Cover Change layers to determine LULC shifts in their surrounding areas for 1990, 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018. Environmental and socioeconomic variables were used to create Boosted Regression Tree models explaining spatial variations in the mean percentage of changed area. Analysis of 270 peatland locations in the Iberian Peninsula revealed that forests and seminatural areas constituted over 80% of the peatland’s surroundings. Agricultural areas expanded the most, except between 2006 and 2012 when the artificial areas showed more gains. While most surrounding areas experienced an average change of 0%-9.51% of the total area, between 1990 and 2018, lowland peatlands (littoral and sublittoral) suffered more intense changes (9.51% to 38.43%). Our models showed that only elevation and agricultural area density were relevant predictors of the spatial distribution of changes. Upland Iberian peatlands showed lower susceptibility to LULC change, while lowland peatlands underwent remarkable transformations. This study substantially expands previous knowledge about the distribution and conservation needs of these ecosystems in the Iberian Peninsula, especially those in littoral and sublittoral lowlands.

Positioning services based on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) have been using MEO satellites designed to guarantee Earth global coverage for decades. This satellite distribution is sometimes complemented with satellites in Inclined Geosynchronous (IGSO) and Geostationary (GEO) Orbits to improve satellite visibility in particular service areas. During recent years, with the advancements and reduction in costs in the deployment of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) constellations, the opportunity of using LEO satellites for PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) solutions is being studied. This concept opens the possibility to provide high accuracy positioning overcoming the typical drawbacks of RTK (Real-Time Kinematics) or PPP (Precise Point Positioning), such as the need for ground infrastructure or long convergence times. The high velocity dynamics of the low orbits can help to cancel the effect of the ionosphere in the signals to be processed at the user level. Therefore, the introduction of LEO satellites together with the classical MEO GNSS constellations could be a solution to reduce the dependency on dense station networks. The size of the LEO constellations and the design of their orbits are key factors to improve the PPP solution. Moreover, both the accuracy and the convergence time of the PPP solution depend also on the quality of the on-board equipment of the satellite, especially on the quality of the atomic clock in terms of stability and noise, and on the quality of the orbit and clock corrections sent to the PPP users. GMV has decades of experience in both GNSS and LEO precise orbit determination (POD) fields and in high-accuracy GNSS applications for different market domains. With this experience, several analyses have been carried out to assess the achievable performance when introducing the processing of LEO signals for high accuracy positioning solutions, contributing to the overall GNSS community. The objective of this paper is to describe the analysis run by GMV with the use of synthetic data simulating GNSS and LEO signals, showing results and the associated assessment of the achievable performance.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Its etiopathogenesis is complex, mainly influenced by genetic instability caused by the accumulation of mutations. The XRCC1 gene, which is involved in DNA repair, has been associated with CRC through the R194W (C194T) and R399Q (G399A) polymorphisms, but the results are inconsistent. Here, we analyzed the association of these polymorphisms with sporadic CRC in a northeastern Mexican population, including 155 male CRC patients and 155 male controls. Genotyping was performed using the RFLP method. An association with CRC was found for the 399A allele (G vs A; OR = 1.48 (1.03–2.13), P=0.034) and for the 399AA genotype in a codominant model (AA vs GG; OR = 3.11 (1.06–9.10), P=0.031). In contrast, there were no significant differences between CRC patients and controls for the C194T polymorphism (C vs T; OR = 0.82 (0.52–1.31), P=0.41). These results are consistent with many similar studies, but further research is needed to verify whether the XRCC1 R194W and R399Q polymorphisms play a role in CRC etiology. The functional significance of these polymorphisms is unclear, but some studies suggest that they influence DNA repair capacity and, thus, cancer risk.

Abstract Spores are an infectious form of the zoonotic bacterial pathogen, Bacillus anthracis. The outermost spore layer is the exosporium, comprised of a basal layer and an external glycoprotein nap layer. The major structural proteins of the inner basal layer are CotY (at the mother cell central pole or bottlecap) and ExsY around the rest of the spore. The basis for the cap or noncap specificity of the CotY and ExsY proteins is currently unknown. We investigated the role of sequence differences between these proteins in localization during exosporium assembly. We found that sequence differences were less important than the timing of expression of the respective genes in the positioning of these inner basal layer structural proteins. Fusion constructs with the fluorescent protein fused at the N‐terminus resulted in poor incorporation whereas fusions at the carboxy terminus of CotY or ExsY resulted in good incorporation. However, complementation studies revealed that fusion constructs, although accurate indicators of protein localization, were not fully functional. A model is presented that explains the localization patterns observed. Bacterial two‐hybrid studies in Escherichia coli hosts were used to examine protein–protein interactions with full‐length and truncated proteins. The N‐terminus amino acid sequences of ExsY and CotY appear to be recognized by spore proteins located in the spore interspace, consistent with interactions seen with ExsY and CotY with the interspace proteins CotE and CotO, known to be involved with exosporium attachment.

Abstract The factors controlling the spatial variability of soil biodiversity remain largely undetermined. We conducted a global field survey to evaluate how and why the within-site spatial variability of soil biodiversity (i.e. richness and community composition) changes across global biomes with contrasting soil ages, climates and vegetation types. We found that the spatial variability of bacteria, fungi, protists, and invertebrates is positively correlated across ecosystems. We also show that the spatial variability of soil biodiversity is mainly controlled by changes in vegetation structure driven by soil age and aridity. Areas with high plant cover, but low spatial heterogeneity, were associated with low levels of spatial variability in soil biodiversity. Further, our work advances the existence of significant, undescribed links between the spatial variability of soil biodiversity and key ecosystem functions. Taken together, our findings indicate that reductions in plant cover (e.g., via desertification, increases in aridity, or deforestation), are likely to increase the spatial variability of multiple soil organisms and that such changes are likely to negatively impact ecosystem functioning across global biomes.

El Colegio Máximo de Cartuja en Granada fue construido por los jesuitas en el siglo XIX. El estudio arqueométrico de sus materiales: ladrillos, azulejos, vidrieras y morteros, define el concepto vernáculo de esta construcción, referenciada en el marco geológico de la “formación Alhambra”, junto a la identificación de materias primas y técnicas utilizadas por los nazaríes desde el siglo XIII. Los resultados de XRD, XRF y DTA confirman el uso de arcillas locales para fabricación de ladrillos y losetas que se hornearon a temperaturas de ≤750 ºC. Las arcillas debieron contener aditivos de NaCl que beneficiaron la sinterización cerámica, y se comprobó el uso de colores de tradición nazarí (Cu, Fe, Sn) en los esmaltes y vidrieras. Las materias primas locales también se usaron para producir aglomerantes aéreos. Estos resultados se han combinado para crear una guía de buenas prácticas para la restauración sostenible de los edificios del patrimonio cultural.

Glacier forefields provide a unique chronosequence to assess microbial or plant colonization and ecological succession on previously uncolonized substrates. Patterns of microbial succession in soils of alpine and subpolar glacier forefields are well documented but those affecting high polar systems, including moraine rocks, remain largely unexplored. In this study, we examine succession patterns in pioneering bacterial, fungal and algal communities developing on moraine rocks and soil at the Hurd Glacier forefield (Livingston Island, Antarctica). Over time, changes were produced in the microbial community structure of rocks and soils (ice-free for different lengths of time), which differed between both substrates across the entire chronosequence, especially for bacteria and fungi. In addition, fungal and bacterial communities showed more compositional consistency in soils than rocks, suggesting community assembly in each niche could be controlled by processes operating at different temporal and spatial scales. Microscopy revealed a patchy distribution of epilithic and endolithic lithobionts, and increasing endolithic colonization and microbial community complexity along the chronosequence. We conclude that, within relatively short time intervals, primary succession processes at polar latitudes involve significant and distinct changes in edaphic and lithic microbial communities associated with soil development and cryptogamic colonization.

In the final decades of the 20th century, irregular immigration in the United States grew exponentially. It is estimated that in 2017 there are 11 million irregular immigrants, half of them Mexican. In parallel, an anti-immigrant movement has arisen which considers them a threat to the US economy, welfare state, national security and identity. As a result, an ideological discourse has developed around irregular immigration that is accompanied by a series of legal and regulatory adjustments to control it and its use for electoral gain.

The synthesis of the nickel oxide-gadolinium doped ceria (NiO-GDC with 65:35 wt. %) nanocomposite powders with a stoichiometry of Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 was performed via fast solution combustion technique; using three different mixing methods: (i) CM (metal cations in an aqueous solution), (ii) HM (hand mortar), and (iii) BM (ball milling). The nanocomposite powders were calcined at 700 °C for 2 h and characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray Diffraction XRD. The TEM and XRD analyses evidenced the well-dispersed NiO and GDC crystallites with the absence of secondary phases, respectively. Later, the calcined powders (NiO-GDC nanocomposites) were compacted and sintered at 1500 °C for 2 h. The microhardness of the sintered nanocomposites varies in accordance with the synthesis approach: a higher microhardness of 6.04 GPa was obtained for nanocomposites synthesized through CM, while 5.94 and 5.41 GPa were obtained for ball-milling and hand-mortar approach, respectively. Furthermore, it was observed that regardless of the long time-consuming ball-milling process with respect to the hand mortar, there was no significant improvement in the electrical properties.

En este texto evaluaremos los planteamientos generales de la política migratoria durante el sexenio del presidente Enrique Peña Nieto, plasmados en el Programa Especial de Migración, y en la manera en que éste fue operado en la práctica por los funcionarios encargados. Finalmente, se analizarán los casos coyunturales más representativos: la creación del Plan Frontera Sur ante la crisis humanitaria de niños y familias migrantes, el desvío de fondos del ime a Juntos Podemos y las caravanas hondureñas de fin de sexenio.

El objetivo de este artículo es describir algunos de los impactos laborales, migratorios y sociales que parecen estar asociados al cambio de patrón migratorio en una de las regiones históricas de la migración México-Estados Unidos. Los impactos de la situación migratoria actual son un tema emergente en la investigación debido al indudable incremento del número de migrantes de retorno y la notable disminución de los flujos de salida. La hipótesis es que dados los procesos de transición demográfica y de cambio en la relación costo-beneficio de la migración indocumenta - da, la migración a Estados Unidos se ha reducido notablemente, situación que se advierte desde 2005 y ha obligado a permanecer en México a la generación que nació a partir de 1990, lo que ha dado lugar a escenarios inéditos en las dinámicas laboral, migratoria y social de la región. El saldo migratorio cero que se constata a nivel estadístico se ha reflejado en la dificultad de migrar a Estados Unidos en comunidades de la región histórica de la migración, lo que ha modificado los escenarios tradicionales de la migración México-Estados Unidos. Ya no es posible ni adecuado seguir trabajando con ideas, nociones o interpretaciones que corresponden a un patrón migratorio que duró un siglo, pero que ya no existe.

La migración mexicana a Estados Unidos se caracteriza por su continuidad, unidireccionalidad e historicidad, lo que permite establecer fases y etapas en este largo proceso. El artículo plantea el fin de la etapa bipolar (1986-2007) y el comienzo de una nueva, que se caracteriza por el reflujo migratorio en un contexto de crisis económica, social y política en cuanto a la gobernanza del fenómeno migratorio. El sistema migratorio norteamericano está colapsado y las vías de solución han quedado entrampadas después de veinte años de reformas parciales, políticas contradictorias y una sistemática campaña en contra la población inmigrante.

Abstract Nitrogen (N) supply often limits the productivity of temperate forests and is regulated by a complex mix of biological and climatic drivers. In excess, N is linked to a variety of soil, water, and air pollution issues. Here, we use results from an elevation gradient study and historical data from the long‐term Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (New Hampshire, USA) to examine relationships between changes in climate, especially during winter, and N supply to northern hardwood forest ecosystems. Low elevation plots with less snow, more soil freezing, and more freeze/thaw cycles supported lower rates of N mineralization than high elevation plots, despite having higher soil temperatures and no consistent differences in soil moisture during the growing season. These results are consistent with historical analyses showing decreases in rates of soil N mineralization and inorganic N concentrations since 1973 that are correlated with long‐term increases in mean annual temperature, decreases in annual snow accumulation, and a increases in the number of winter thawing degree days. This evidence suggests that changing climate may be driving decreases in the availability of a key nutrient in northern hardwood forests, which could decrease ecosystem production but have positive effects on environmental consequences of excess N.

The serotonergic system has been hypothesized to contribute to the biological susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and body-mass index (BMI) categories. We investigate a possible association of 5-HTTLPR polymorphism (L and S alleles) in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) with the development of T2DM and/or higher BMI by analyzing a sample of 138 individuals diagnosed with T2DM and 172 unrelated controls from the Mexican general population. In the total sample genotypes were distributed according to Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium, and S allele frequency was 0.58. There was no statistical association between 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and the development of T2DM in this Mexican population sample (p = 0.12). Nevertheless, logistic regression analysis of the L allele and increased BMI disclosed an association, after adjusting for age, sex and T2DM (p = 0.02, OR 1.74, 95% CI: 1.079-2.808).
