1. Living benthic foraminifera from El Ferrol Bay

Abstract: The study focused on the assemblage of ‘living’ benthic foraminifera (stained with Rose Bengal) in the surface sediments of El Ferrol Bay (Chimbote, 9°S). Twelve sampling sites were selected at depths ranging from 4.5 to 27 meters in September 2015. Water samples were collected near the seafloor to determine dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and nutrient (nitrate and phosphate). Sediment samples were analysed for total organic matter (TOM) and the chlorophyll-a to phaeopigment ratio (chl-a/phaeo. Our findings confirm that this bay experiences hypoxic conditions at the seafloor (~2 mL/L) in addition to high dissolved nitrate levels. The assemblage was primarily composed of hyaline calcareous species, a porcelaneous calcareous species, and a soft-shelled foraminiferal species. Densities ranged from moderate to high, with the calcareous species Bolivina costata being the dominant species and B. elegantissima co-dominant in most sites. Based on our analysis, no significant differences were observed between the assemblages of living benthic foraminifera in the inner and outer bay. However, the influence of bottom nitrates on shallow-water foraminiferal species was notable. These results provide a baseline reference for future monitoring and calibration studies.

Abstract: La combinación armoniosa de los objetivos de marketing comercial con la solución de problemas sociales condujo al surgimiento de un nuevo concepto: El marketing social enfocado al cambio de comportamiento de los ciudadanos. El propósito del estudio fue analizar a través de una revisión sistemática las teorías y prácticas en la aplicación de esta estrategia de marketing, para lo cual se utilizó el análisis de contenido, la revisión bibliográfica y documental. Las unidades de análisis se obtuvieron de las bases de datos: Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, Proquest, Semantic Scholar, Redalyc y Google académico; revisando y seleccionando los mismos mediante el método de análisis de contenido, luego se procedió a identificar según el modelo un total de 307 fuentes, excluyendo posteriormente 278 y seleccionando 29 artículos (unidades de análisis) por su pertinencia, relevancia y elegibilidad con el tema de estudio. Obteniendo como hallazgos que: La clave del marketing social es crear nuevos clientes, mejorando el valor de la marca con una imagen de conciencia ecológica, social y corresponsable de preocupación por la salud de la población, la prevención de problemas sociales, entre otros aspectos de impacto en la sociedad convirtiéndose en una forma de visionar la empresa.

3. Multidecadal Changes in Marine Subsurface Oxygenation Off Central Peru During the Last ca. 170 Years

Abstract: Subsurface water masses with permanent oxygen deficiency (oxygen minimum zones, OMZ) are typically associated with upwelling regions and exhibit a high sensitivity to climate variability. Over the last decade, several studies have reported a global ocean deoxygenation trend since 1960 and a consequent OMZ expansion. However, some proxy records suggest an oxygenation trend for the OMZ over the margins of the Tropical North East Pacific since ca. 1850. At the Tropical South East Pacific, the upper Peruvian margin is permanently impinged by a shallow and intense OMZ. In this study, we aim to (1) reconstruct the (multi)decadal oxygenation variability off central Peru, and (2) to identify the influence of both largescale and local factors and the potential underlying mechanisms driving subsurface oxygenation in the Eastern Pacific. We combined a multiproxy approach in multiple paleoceanographic records for the last ∼170 years with instrumental records of subsurface oxygen concentrations since 1960. We analyzed benthic foraminiferal assemblages, redox-sensitive metals (Mo, Re, U), δ15N and contents of total organic carbon and biogenic silica in multiple sediment cores collected in the upper margin off Callao (180 m) and Pisco (∼300 m). An OMZ weakening over the Peruvian central margin can be inferred from 1865 to 2004. The records can be divided in three major periods, based on responses of local productivity and subsurface ventilation: (i) the mid to late 19th century, with enhanced siliceous productivity, a strong oxygen-deficient and reducing sedimentary conditions; (ii) the late 19th century to mid-twentieth century, with less oxygen-deficient and reducing sedimentary conditions, superimposed to a slight decadal-scale variability; and (iii) the late 20th century until the early 2000’s, with a slight oxygenation trend. We attribute the centennial-scale oxygenation trend in the Tropical East Pacific to ventilation processes by undercurrents that decreased subsurface oxygenation even when during the same period an overall increase in export production was inferred off Peru. Unlike other upwelling areas in the Tropical East Pacific, subsurface oxygenation off Peru does not show a decrease in the last decades, instead a subtle oxygenation trend was observed close to the core of the OMZ at 200 m depth.

Abstract: International audience; We present a reconstruction of human demography and shell fishing activity in the Sine-Saloum mangrove Delta (Senegal) in the past 6000 years using the summed probability density (SPD) of radiocarbon dates in archaeological shell middens. We explore how this local history relates to the climatic and political history of West Africa. We find that traces of human presence were scarce from 6000 to 2000 yr BP, partly because the geomorphology of the estuary was less favorable to human settlements at that time. A specialized shell fishing population migrated massively to the Sine-Saloum around 2000 yr BP, at the end of the aridification trend that followed the African humid period. This population, likely coming from the northern coast in search of land and resources, fleeing from aridity and the subsequent warfare, found refuge in the coastal mangroves and reached a maximum activity at about 1700 yr BP. This period corresponds to the beginning of trans-Saharan trade, and to a political complexification that would give rise to the Ghana empire. The incoming migration may have occurred in two waves as suggested by two peaks in the SPD curve at 200–400 CE and 600–800 CE and by cultural differences within the Delta. Most sites in the Sine-Saloum islands were abandoned in the early 15th century, before the arrival of Europeans, possibly because intensive shell fishing was not sustainable anymore, or because of the regional political destabilization associated to the fall of the Ghana empire and the beginning of the Mali empire. Shortly after, in agreement with oral traditions, a new population lead by the Manding Guelwars, moved to the Sine Saloum after a military defeat and founded the modern towns. They had a reduced shellfishing activity compared to previous inhabitants, possibly because activities were more oriented to the new trade with Europeans or to a prosperous agriculture in more humid climatic conditions that prevailed from 1500 to 1800 CE

Abstract: The evolution of crocodylians as sea dwellers remains obscure because living representatives are basically freshwater inhabitants and fossil evidence lacks crucial aspects about crocodylian occupation of marine ecosystems. New fossils from marine deposits of Peru reveal that crocodylians were habitual coastal residents of the southeastern Pacific (SEP) for approximately 14 million years within the Miocene ( ca 19 to 5 Ma), an epoch including the highest global peak of marine crocodylian diversity. The assemblage of the SEP comprised two long and slender-snouted (longirostrine) taxa of the Gavialidae: the giant Piscogavialis and a new early diverging species, Sacacosuchus cordovai . Although living gavialids ( Gavialis and Tomistoma ) are freshwater forms, this remarkable fossil record and a suite of evolutionary morphological analyses reveal that the whole evolution of marine crocodylians pertained to the gavialids and their stem relatives (Gavialoidea). This adaptive radiation produced two longirostrine ecomorphs with dissimilar trophic roles in seawaters and involved multiple transmarine dispersals to South America and most landmasses. Marine gavialoids were shallow sea dwellers, and their Cenozoic diversification was influenced by the availability of coastal habitats. Soon after the richness peak of the Miocene, gavialoid crocodylians disappeared from the sea, probably as part of the marine megafauna extinction of the Pliocene.

Abstract: International audience; Over the last decades, rocks from the East Pisco Basin (EPB), on the Central Peruvian coast (13 •-16 • S), have yielded an abundant and diverse collection of coastal-marine fossils, which are key for characterizing the onset and evolution of the modern Humboldt Current. Despite its paleontological richness, and after almost 40 years of study, the spatio-temporal context of the deposits of the southern part of the EPB (Sacaco area) remains only broadly constrained, being mostly tailored to particular vertebrate-rich levels occurring throughout the area. Here we build a composite stratigraphic section for the Sacaco area including three lithostratigraphic units (Pisco, Caracoles, and Pongo formations), which documents several discontinuities and intraformational unconformities. We infer depositional ages based on new radiometric (U-Pb), isotopic (Sr) and biostratigraphic data, synthesize previous litho-, chemo-, and bio-stratigraphic studies, and present a comprehensive chronostratigraphic review of the Mio-Pleistocene record for the Sacaco sub-basin that allows us to identify various local and basinal events. Our results indicate that, in the Sacaco area, the Pisco Formation ranges from ~9.6 to 4.5 Ma, the overlying Caracoles Formation from 2.7 to ~1.9 Ma, and the Pongo Formation accumulated from ~1.9 up to at least 1.4 Ma. These sedimentary successions accumulated in a continually subsiding setting and show a shallowing-upwards trend. Zircon U-Pb provenance analysis mainly record Neoproterozoic, Cretaceous, and Mio-Pleistocene populations, revealing discrete up-section changes in source areas. Mio-Pleistocene and Cretaceous sources are continuously present, while older recycled-orogen sources vary through time in presence and abundance, indicating either paleogeographic changes or source exhaustion.

8. Correction to: Late Neogene evolution of the Peruvian margin and its ecosystems: a synthesis from the Sacaco record

Abstract: The oxygen deficient mesopelagic layer (ODL) off Peru has concentrations below 5 μmol O2 kg–1 and is delimited by a shallow upper oxycline with strong vertical gradient and a more gradual lower oxycline (lOx). Some regions show a narrow band of slightly increased oxygen concentrations within the ODL, an intermediate oxygen layer (iO2). CTD, oxygen and lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (LADCP, 300 kHz) profiles were taken on the shelf edge and outside down to mostly 2000 m. We evaluate here the acoustic volume backscatter strength of the LADCP signal representing organisms of about 5 mm size. Dominant features of the backscatter profiles were a minimum backscatter strength within the ODL, and just below the lOx a marked backscatter increase reaching a maximum at less than 3.0 μmol O2 kg–1. Below this maximum, the acoustic backscatter strength gradually decreased down to 1000 m below the lOx. The backscatter strength also increased at the iO2 in parallel to the oxygen concentration perturbations marking the iO2. These stable backscatter features were independent of the time of day and the organisms represented by the backscatter had to be adapted to live in this microaerobic environment. During daylight, these stable structures were overlapped by migrating backscatter peaks. Outstanding features of the stable backscatter were that at very low oxygen concentrations, the volume backscatter was linearly related to the oxygen concentration, reaching half peak maximum at less than 2.0 μmol O2 kg–1 below the lOx, and the depth-integrated backscatter of the peak below the lOx was higher than the integral above the Ox. Both features suggest that sufficient organic material produced at the surface reaches to below the ODL to sustain the major fraction of the volume backscatter-producing organisms in the water column. These organisms are adapted to the microaerobic environment so they can position themselves close to the lower oxycline to take advantage of the organic particles sinking out of the ODL.

Abstract: International audience; The Peruvian coast experiences the largest interannual variability of sea surface temperature in the world due to the combined influence of the coastal upwelling and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Although biological impacts of El Niño events have been widely reported, their effects on rocky intertidal communities remains largely unknown in Peru. Herein, we analyze the results of two biological surveys of rocky intertidal communities, conducted along 1400 km of the Peruvian coast. The first survey was conducted in 2015 yielding a snapshot of the distribution of rocky intertidal communities after 17 years of stable La Niña-like conditions. The second survey was carried in October 2017, after the 2015-16 and the 2017 El Niño events, which produced warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies up to 6 °C on the Peruvian coast. We find no changes throughout the latitudinal transect in taxonomic richness but an important turnover of species, especially marked in the transition zone (~4–8°S) between the Panamic and the Humboldt provinces. Temperature-related southward migration of species was evidenced in a few sites but did not explain the large-scale change in communities observed from 2015 to 2017, primarily driven by large changes in the distribution of a few ecologically important species across the Panamic and Humboldt provinces. A primary environmental impact on some ecologically key species likely triggered a chain of secondary impacts through ecological relationships which lead to a complex change independent from SST gradients. Further studies are needed to better characterize and disentangle the seasonal and interannual variability of the rocky intertidal communities and their drivers. When this interannual variability is integrated, the nine study sites show a highly persistent community structure determined by the latitudinal SST gradient along the Peruvian coast.

Abstract: The highly productive waters of the Humboldt Current System (HCS) host a particular temperate ecosystem within the tropics, whose history is still largely unknown. The Pisco Formation, deposited during Mio-Pliocene times in the Peruvian continental margin has yielded an outstanding collection of coastal-marine fossils, providing an opportunity to understand the genesis of the HCS ecosystem. We present a comprehensive review, completed with new results, that integrates geological and paleontological data from the last 10 My, especially focusing on the southern East Pisco Basin (Sacaco area). We discuss the depositional settings of the Pisco Formation and integrate new U/Pb radiometric ages into the chronostratigraphic framework of the Sacaco sub-basin. The last preserved Pisco sediments at Sacaco were deposited ~ 4.5 Ma, while the overlying Caracoles Formation accumulated from ~ 2.7 Ma onwards. We identified a Pliocene angular unconformity encompassing 1.7 My between these formations, associated with a regional phase of uplift. Local and regional paleoenvironmental indicators suggest that shallow settings influenced by the offshore upwelling of ventilated and warm waters prevailed until the early Pliocene. We present an extensive synthesis of the late Miocene–Pleistocene vertebrate fossil record, which allows for an ecological characterization of the coastal-marine communities, an assessment of biodiversity trends, and changes in coastal-marine lineages in relation to modern HCS faunas. Our synthesis shows that: (i) typical endemic coastal Pisco vertebrates persisted up to ~ 4.5 Ma, (ii) first modern HCS toothed cetaceans appear at ~ 7–6 Ma, coinciding with a decline in genus diversity, and (iii) a vertebrate community closer to the current HCS was only reached after 2.7 Ma. The genesis of the Peruvian coastal ecosystem seems to be driven by a combination of stepwise transformations of the coastal geomorphology related to local tectonic pulses and by a global cooling trend leading to the modern oceanic circulation system.

Abstract: International audience; Lack of constraint on spatial and long-term temporal variability of the El Niño southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its sensitivity to external forcing limit our ability to evaluate climate models and ENSO future projections. Current knowledge of Holocene ENSO variability derived from paleoclimate reconstructions does not separate the role of insolation forcing from internal climate variability. Using an updated synthesis of coral and bivalve monthly resolved records, we build composite records of seasonality and interannual variability in four regions of the tropical Pacific: Eastern Pacific (EP), Central Pacific (CP), Western Pacific (WP) and South West Pacific (SWP). An analysis of the uncertainties due to the sampling of chaotic multidecadal to centennial variability by short records allows for an objective comparison with transient simulations (mid-Holocene to present) performed using four different Earth System models. Sea surface temperature and pseudo-δ18O are used in model-data comparisons to assess the potential influence of hydroclimate change on records. We confirm the significance of the Holocene ENSO minimum (HEM) 3-6ka compared to low frequency unforced modulation of ENSO, with a reduction of ENSO variance of ∼50 % in EP and ∼80 % in CP. The approach suggests that the increasing trend of ENSO since 6ka can be attributed to insolation, while models underestimate ENSO sensitivity to orbital forcing by a factor of 4.7 compared to data, even when accounting for the large multidecadal variability. Precession-induced change in seasonal temperature range is positively linked to ENSO variance in EP and to a lesser extent in other regions, in both models and observations. Our regional approach yields insights into the past spatial expression of ENSO across the tropical Pacific. In the SWP, today under the influence of the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), interannual variability was increased by ∼200 % during the HEM, indicating that SPCZ variability is independent from ENSO on millennial time scales.

Abstract: In the eastern Pacific, lithogenic input to the ocean responds to variations in the atmospheric and oceanic system and their teleconnections over different timescales. Atmospheric (e.g., wind fields), hydrological (e.g., fresh water plumes) and oceanic (e.g., currents) conditions determine the transport mode and the amount of lithogenic material transported from the continent to the continental shelf. Here, we present the grain size distribution of a composite record of two laminated sediment cores retrieved from the Peruvian continental shelf that record the last ∼ 1000 years at a sub-decadal to centennial time-series resolution. We propose novel grain size indicators of wind intensity and fluvial input that allow reconstructing the oceanic–atmospheric variability modulated by sub-decadal to centennial changes in climatic conditions. Four grain size modes were identified. Two are linked to aeolian inputs (M3: ∼ 54; M4: ∼ 91 µm on average), the third is interpreted as a marker of sediment discharge (M2: ∼ 10 µm on average), and the last is without an associated origin (M1: ∼ 3 µm). The coarsest components (M3 and M4) dominated during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Current Warm Period (CWP) periods, suggesting that aeolian transport increased as a consequence of surface wind stress intensification. In contrast, M2 displays an opposite behavior, exhibiting an increase in fluvial terrigenous input during the Little Ice Age (LIA) in response to more humid conditions associated with El Niño-like conditions. Comparison with other South American paleoclimate records indicates that the observed changes are driven by interactions between meridional displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the South Pacific Subtropical High (SPSH) and Walker circulation at decadal and centennial timescales.

Abstract: We studied 'living' (stained) benthic foraminifera in the upper border of the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) to determine the relationship between species' distribution and pore water and sediment geochemistry under oxygen deficiency. Superficial sediments were sampled between 2009 and 2011 from 2 bathymetric transects off central Peru (45 to 300 m depth). The quantity (total organic carbon, total nitrogen and chloroplastic pigment equivalents [CPE]) and quality (chlorophyll a/phaeopigments ratio) of organic matter (OM) were evaluated. Benthic foraminifera were sampled in the top 5 cm of sediment. Commonly, the inner shelf sediments were sulfidic and labile OM-rich, whereas the outer shelf and upper slope sediments exhibited postoxic conditions (e.g. anoxic and non-sulfidic) with less labile OM, typical of OMZ core sediments. Mixed conditions were found in shelf sediment samples from April 2010, when the effects of El Niño 2009/2010 were withdrawing. Foraminiferal assemblages exhibited differences according to redox conditions and OM quality, and were concentrated in the topmost sediment. A canonical correspondence analysis and non-parametric correlations indicated that Bolivina costata, Nonionella auris and Virgulinella fragilis were characteristic of sulfidic/labile OM sediments, thriving slightly deeper in the sediment. In contrast, Bolivina pacifica headed the assemblage representative of postoxia/less labile OM. Bolivina seminuda and Buliminella tenuata (both dominant under postoxia) were not associated with any specific measured parameter, although were present in sulfidic sediments, suggesting other factors were involved in their distribution.

Abstract: The ecology of the benthic foraminiferal community (62–150 and >150 μm) was studied in the continental shelf off Callao (12oS) during April 2009. Five sediment stations were sampled along a cross-shelf transect. All the sites were subjected to dysoxic conditions in the bottom water, but differed in its sedimentary biogeochemical conditions. The inner-shelf, characterized by high contents of labile organic matter in the sediment surface and sulfidic conditions in the pore water, presented a community dominated by Bolivina costata, followed by Virgulinella fragilis, a spherical allogromiid morphotype, and Nonionella auris. The outer-shelf, more permanently subjected to the oxygen minimum zone, and characterized by sedimentary suboxic conditions and lower contents of labile organic matter, was inhabited by a community dominated by Bolivina humilis and Buliminella tenuata. Vertical distributions of V. fragilis, N. auris, and the spherical allogromiid morphotype likely reflect physiological and symbiotic adaptations to anoxia. We conclude that under this oxygen-deficient setting, the labile organic matter content and the sedimentary redox conditions govern the community parameters.
