Abstract Background Direct acting antivirals (DAAs) as a curative treatment of hepatitis C have been available for several years and have replaced interferon-containing therapies. However, treatment rates of people who inject drugs (PWID) are declining in Germany, putting the elimination of hepatitis C by 2030 at risk. This study aimed at elucidating the knowledge of, and attitude towards, hepatitis C treatment in a clinical sample of PWID. Methods Participants were recruited between February 2019 and October 2020 at two opioid agonist therapy (OAT) clinics and two in-patient drug detoxification wards. Based on the European Addiction Severity Index (Europ-ASI), a standardized interview focusing on: sociodemographic data, drug history, risky behavior, infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV, and previous experience with HCV treatment was carried out. In addition, participants filled in a questionnaire evaluating 13 statements relating to HCV treatment (right/wrong) and 15 statements on their personal ‘pros and cons’ views to start such a treatment assessed with the means of a 6-point Likert scale. Results A total of 153 patients (average age 45 years, male 78%; 106 (69.3%) currently in opioid maintenance treatment, 47 (30.7%) currently admitted to an inpatient detoxification) with an opioid use disorder were investigated. All of them reported having injected drugs at least once in their lives; 97 participants (63.3%) stated that they had been previously diagnosed with HCV infection. Among them, 27/97 patients (27.8%) reported a previous treatment with interferon; 27/97 (27.8%) with DAAs; and 32/97 (33.0%) reported a currently active hepatitis C. Most patients knew about the availability and efficacy of DAAs. However, DAAs’ low rate of side effects, their short treatment duration, and their replacement of interferon, were not correctly evaluated by up to 50.3% of patients. 25–40% of 32 patients with currently active hepatitis C prioritized handling of social and other medical issues, e.g., reduction of heroin use, over treatment of hepatitis C. Conclusions Although current levels of risky behavior have reportedly been reduced by active PWID over the past few years, educational and motivational interventions to increase hepatitis C treatment uptake should address the gaps in patients’ knowledge.

Purpose: The recently introduced Varian Ethos system allows adjusting radiotherapy treatment plans to anatomical changes on a daily basis. The system uses artificial intelligence to speed up the process of creating adapted plans, comes with its own software solutions and requires a substantially different workflow. A detailed analysis of possible risks of the associated workflow is presented. Methods: A prospective risk analysis of the adaptive workflow with the Ethos system was performed using Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). An interprofessional team collected possible adverse events and evaluated their severity as well as their chance of occurrence and detectability. Measures to reduce the risks were discussed. Results: A total of 122 events were identified, and scored. Within the 20 events with the highest-ranked risks, the following were identified: Challenges due to the stand-alone software solution with very limited connectivity to the existing record and verify software and digital patient file, unfamiliarity with the new software and its limitations and the adaption process relying on results obtained by artificial intelligence. The risk analysis led to the implementation of additional quality assurance measures in the workflow. Conclusions: The thorough analysis of the risks associated with the new treatment technique was the basis for designing details of the workflow. The analysis also revealed challenges to be addressed by both, the vendor and customers. On the vendor side, this includes improving communication between their different software solutions. On the customer side, this especially includes establishing validation strategies to monitor the results of the black box adaption process making use of artificial intelligence.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based online adaptation is increasingly being introduced into many clinics. Upon implementation of a new treatment technique, a prospective risk analysis is required and enhances workflow safety. We conducted a risk analysis using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) upon the introduction of an online adaptive treatment programme (Wegener et al., Z Med Phys. 2022).A prospective risk analysis, lacking in-depth clinical experience with a treatment modality or treatment machine, relies on imagination and estimates of the occurrence of different failure modes. Therefore, we systematically documented all irregularities during the first year of online adaptation, namely all cases in which quality assurance detected undesired states potentially leading to negative consequences. Additionally, the quality of automatic contouring was evaluated. Based on those quantitative data, the risk analysis was updated by an interprofessional team. Furthermore, a hypothetical radiation therapist-only workflow during adaptive sessions was included in the prospective analysis, as opposed to the involvement of an interprofessional team performing each adaptive treatment.A total of 126 irregularities were recorded during the first year. During that time period, many of the previously anticipated failure modes (almost) occurred, indicating that the initial prospective risk analysis captured relevant failure modes. However, some scenarios were not anticipated, emphasizing the limits of a prospective risk analysis. This underscores the need for regular updates to the risk analysis. The most critical failure modes are presented together with possible mitigation strategies. It was further noted that almost half of the reported irregularities applied to the non-adaptive treatments on this treatment machine, primarily due to a manual plan import step implemented in the institution’s workflow.

Treatment with the anti‐angiogenic drug bevacizumab in addition to chemotherapy has shown efficacy for breast cancer in some clinical trials, but better biomarkers are needed to optimally select patients for treatment. Here, we present an omics approach where DNA methylation profiles are integrated with gene expression and results from proteomic data in breast cancer patients to predict response to therapy and pinpoint response‐related epigenetic events. Fresh‐frozen tumor biopsies taken before, during, and after treatment from human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative non‐metastatic patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy with or without bevacizumab were subjected to molecular profiling. Here, we report that DNA methylation at enhancer CpGs related to cell cycle regulation can predict response to chemotherapy and bevacizumab for the estrogen receptor positive subset of patients (AUC = 0.874), and we validated this observation in an independent patient cohort with a similar treatment regimen (AUC = 0.762). Combining the DNA methylation scores with the scores from a previously published protein signature resulted in a slight increase in the prediction performance (AUC = 0.784). We also show that tumors receiving the combination treatment underwent more extensive epigenetic alterations. Finally, we performed an integrative expression–methylation quantitative trait loci analysis on alterations in DNA methylation and gene expression levels, showing that the epigenetic alterations that occur during treatment are different between responders and non‐responders and that these differences may be explained by the proliferation–epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition axis through the activity of grainyhead like transcription factor 2. Using tumor purity computed from copy number data, we developed a method for estimating cancer cell‐specific methylation to confirm that the association to response reflects DNA methylation in cancer cells. Taken together, these results support the potential for clinical benefit of the addition of bevacizumab to chemotherapy when administered to the correct patients.

Abstract Separation and classification are important operations in particle technology, but they are still limited in terms of suspended particles in the micrometer and nanometer size-range. Electrical fields can be beneficial for sorting such particles according to material properties. A mechanism based on strong and inhomogeneous fields is dielectrophoresis (DEP). It can be used to separate microparticles according to their material properties, such as conductivity and permittivity, by selectively trapping one particle type while the other can pass the separator. Conventional DEP-separators show either a limitation in throughput or frequency bandwidth. A low throughput limits the economical feasibility in many cases. A lower frequency bandwidth limits the variety of materials that can be sorted by DEP. To separate semiconducting particles from a mixture containing particles with higher conductivity according to their material, high frequencies are required. Possible applications are the separation of semiconducting and metallic carbon nanotubes or the separation of carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate particles from graphite in the recycling process of spent lithium-ion batteries. In this publication, we aim to display how to tune the electrical impedance of a high-throughput DEP separator based on custom-designed printed circuit boards to increase its frequency bandwidth. By adding inductors to the electrical circuit, we were able to increase the frequency bandwidth from 500 kHz to over 11 MHz. The experiments in this study act as proof-of-principle. Furthermore, a non-deterministic way to increase the impedance of the setup is shown, yielding a maximum frequency of 39.16 MHz.

Today’s users expect to be able to interact with the products they own without much effort and also want to be excited about them. The development of a positive user experience must therefore be managed. We understand management in general as a combination of a goal, a strategy, and resources. When applied to UX, user experience management consists of a UX goal, a UX strategy, and UX resources. We conducted a tertiary study and examined the current state of existing literature regarding possible requirements. We want to figure out, what requirements can be derived from the literature reviews with the focus on UX and agile development. In total, we were able to identify and analyse 16 studies. After analysing the studies in detail, we identified different requirements for UX management. In summary, we identified 13 requirements. The most frequently mentioned requirements were prototypes and UX/usability evaluation. Communication between UX professionals and developers was identified as a major improvement in the software development process. In summary, we were able to identify requirements for UX management of People/Social, Technology/Artifacts, and Process/Practice. However, we could not identify requirements for UX management that enabled the development and achievement of a UX goal.

The sorting of nano- and microparticles according to different properties is an industrially highly relevant but partly unsolved problem. In this study, we investigate the sorting of a complex microparticle mixture on the basis of their different properties by insulator-based dielectrophoretic filtration at high throughput. We demonstrate here that such a high selectivity demanding sorting process is possible in a single device thanks to recent advances in the development of dielectrophoretic filters, which has been shown using simple binary mixtures in a previous study. In that study, a filter with a regular structure (mesh) is introduced with pores several orders of magnitude larger than the target particles so that the particles are trapped solely by the action of positive dielectrophoresis. In this work, we demonstrate the improvement of the filter design, by comparing the trapping behavior to an alternative, irregular porous ceramic structure as a filter medium. A significantly higher selectivity for positive dielectrophoresis could be reached using the regular mesh structure. This high selectivity enables a stepwise operation mode, combining a selective trapping step and several subsequent selective remobilization steps. A mixture of polystyrene-based particles could be sorted by size, shape, and surface coating in one pass of the filter. The proposed method is therefore a promising technique to efficiently create highly specific particle systems in the future.

Abstract The interaction of rarefied gases with functionalized surfaces is of great importance in technical applications such as gas separation membranes and catalysis. To investigate the influence of functionalization and rarefaction on gas flow rate in a defined geometry, pressure-driven gas flow experiments with helium and carbon dioxide through plain and alkyl-functionalized microchannels are performed. The experiments cover Knudsen numbers from 0.01 to 200 and therefore the slip flow regime up to free molecular flow. To minimize the experimental uncertainty which is prevalent in micro flow experiments, a methodology is developed to make optimal use of the measurement data. The results are compared to an analysis-based hydraulic closure model (ACM) predicting rarefied gas flow in straight channels and to numerical solutions of the linearized S-model and BGK kinetic equations. The experimental data shows that if there is a difference between plain and functionalized channels, it is likely obscured by experimental uncertainty. This stands in contrast to previous measurements in smaller geometries and demonstrates that the surface-to-volume ratio of 0.4 $$\upmu$$ μ m $$^{-1}$$ - 1 seems to be too small for the functionalization to have a strong influence and highlights the importance of geometric scale for surface effects. These results also shed light on the molecular reflection characteristics described by the TMAC.

Abstract Rapid and reliable detection of pathogens is crucial to complement the growing industry of mass-reared insects, in order to safeguard the insect colonies from outbreak of diseases, which may cause significant economic loss. Current diagnostic methods are mainly based on conventional PCR and microscopic examination, requiring prior knowledge of disease symptoms and are limited to identifying known pathogens. Here, we present a rapid nanopore-based metagenomics approach for detecting entomopathogens from the European house cricket (Acheta domesticus). In this study, the Acheta domesticus densovirus (AdDV) was detected from diseased individuals using solely Nanopore sequencing. Virus reads and genome assemblies were obtained within twenty-four hours after sequencing. Subsequently, due to the length of the Nanopore reads, it was possible to reconstruct significantly large parts or even the entire AdDV genome to conduct studies for genotype identification. Variant analysis indicated the presence of three AdDV genotypes within the same house cricket population, with association to the vital status of the diseased crickets. This contrast provided compelling evidence for the existence of non-lethal AdDV genotypes. These findings demonstrated nanopore-based metagenomics sequencing as a powerful addition to the diagnostic tool kit for routine pathogen surveillance and diagnosis in the insect rearing industry.

Retinoic acid receptor β2 (RARβ2) is an emerging therapeutic target for spinal cord injuries (SCIs) with a unique multimodal regenerative effect. We have developed a first-in-class RARβ agonist drug, C286, that modulates neuron-glial pathways to induce functional recovery in a rodent model of sensory root avulsion. Here, using genome-wide and pathway enrichment analysis of avulsed rats' spinal cords, we show that C286 also influences the extracellular milieu (ECM). Protein expression studies showed that C286 upregulates tenascin-C, integrin-α9, and osteopontin in the injured cord. Similarly, C286 remodulates these ECM molecules, hampers inflammation and prevents tissue loss in a rodent model of spinal cord contusion C286. We further demonstrate C286's efficacy in human iPSC-derived neurons, with treatment resulting in a significant increase in neurite outgrowth. Additionally, we identify a putative efficacy biomarker, S100B, which plasma levels correlated with axonal regeneration in nerve-injured rats. We also found that other clinically available retinoids, that are not RARβ specific agonists, did not lead to functional recovery in avulsed rats, demonstrating the requirement for RARβ specific pathways in regeneration. In a Phase 1 trial, the single ascending dose (SAD) cohorts showed increases in expression of RARβ2 in white blood cells correlative to increased doses and at the highest dose administered, the pharmacokinetics were similar to the rat proof of concept (POC) studies. Collectively, our data suggests that C286 signalling in neurite/axonal outgrowth is conserved between species and across nerve injuries. This warrants further clinical testing of C286 to ascertain POC in a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative conditions.

Background: Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as phthalates and phenols can affect placental functioning and fetal health, potentially via epigenetic modifications. We investigated the associations between pregnancy exposure to synthetic phenols and phthalates estimated from repeated urine sampling and genome wide placental DNA methylation. Methods: The study is based on 387 women with placental DNA methylation assessed with Infinium MethylationEPIC arrays and with 7 phenols, 13 phthalates, and two non-phthalate plasticizer metabolites measured in pools of urine samples collected twice during pregnancy. We conducted an exploratory analysis on individual CpGs (EWAS) and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) as well as a candidate analysis focusing on 20 previously identified CpGs. Sex-stratified analyses were also performed. Results: In the exploratory analysis, when both sexes were studied together no association was observed in the EWAS. In the sex-stratified analysis, 114 individual CpGs (68 in males, 46 in females) were differentially methylated, encompassing 74 genes (36 for males and 38 for females). We additionally identified 28 DMRs in the entire cohort, 40 for females and 42 for males. Associations were mostly positive (for DMRs: 93% positive associations in the entire cohort, 60% in the sex-stratified analysis), with the exception of several associations for bisphenols and DINCH metabolites that were negative. Biomarkers associated with most DMRs were parabens, DEHP, and DiNP metabolite concentrations. Some DMRs encompassed imprinted genes including APC (associated with parabens and DiNP metabolites), GNAS (bisphenols), ZIM2;PEG3;MIMT1 (parabens, monoethyl phthalate), and SGCE;PEG10 (parabens, DINCH metabolites). Terms related to adiposity, lipid and glucose metabolism, and cardiovascular function were among the enriched phenotypes associated with differentially methylated CpGs. The candidate analysis identified one CpG mapping to imprinted LGALS8 gene, negatively associated with ethylparaben. Conclusions: By combining improved exposure assessment and extensive placental epigenome coverage, we identified several novel genes associated with the exposure, possibly in a sex-specific manner.

Macrophages are one of the key mediators of the therapeutic effects exerted by monoclonal antibodies, such as the anti-CD19 antibody tafasitamab, approved in combination with lenalidomide for the treatment of relapsed or refractory (r/r) diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP) in the tumor microenvironment can be counteracted by increased expression of the inhibitory receptor SIRPα on macrophages and its ligand, the immune checkpoint molecule CD47 on tumor cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the CD47-SIRPα axis on tafasitamabmediated phagocytosis and explore the potential of anti-CD47 blockade to enhance its antitumor activity. Elevated expression of both SIRPα and CD47 was observed in DLBCL patient-derived lymph node biopsies compared to healthy controls. CRISPR-mediated CD47 overexpression impacted tafasitamab-mediated ADCP in vitro and increased expression of SIRPα on macrophages correlated with decreased ADCP activity of tafasitamab against DLBCL cell lines. Combination of tafasitamab and an anti-CD47 blocking antibody enhanced ADCP activity of in vitro generated macrophages. Importantly, tafasitamab-mediated phagocytosis was elevated in combination with CD47 blockade using primary DLBCL cells and patient-derived lymphoma-associated macrophages (LAMs) in an autologous setting. Furthermore, lymphoma cells with low CD19 expression were efficiently eliminated by the combination treatment. Finally, combined treatment of tafasitamab and an anti-CD47 antibody resulted in enhanced tumor volume reduction and survival benefit in lymphoma xenograft mouse models. These findings provide evidence that CD47 blockade can enhance the phagocytic potential of tumor targeting immunotherapies such as tafasitamab and suggest there is value in exploring the combination in the clinic.

The development of highly selective separation processes is a focus of current research. In 2016, the German Science Foundation funded a priority program SPP 2045 “MehrDimPart—highly specific multidimensional fractionation of fine particles with technical relevance” that aims to develop new or enhance existing approaches for the separation of nano- and micrometer-sized particles. Dielectrophoretic separators achieve highly selective separations of (bio-)particles in microfluidic devices or can handle large quantities when non-selective separation is sufficient. Recently, separator designs were developed that aim to combine a high throughput and high selectivity. Here, we summarize the development from a microfluidic fast chromatographic separation via frequency modulated dielectrophoretic particle chromatography (DPC) toward a macrofluidic high throughput separation. Further, we provide a starting point for future work by providing new experimental data demonstrating for the first time the trapping of 200 nm polystyrene particles in a dielectrophoretic high-throughput separator that uses printed circuit boards as alternatives for expensive electrode arrays.

Background and Aims: The entry inhibitor bulevirtide represents the first specific treatment for hepatitis-D virus (HDV)-infected patients. In clinical trials, around 80% of patients achieve normalization of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) with about 60% virological response after 1 year, but little is known about the dynamics of responses and clinical predictors of treatment outcomes. We report our single-center data from 15 patients and describe response dynamics, clinical outcomes, and predictive factors for treatment response. Methods: Retrospective data from 15 patients have been analyzed at our department who started treatment with bulevirtide between 10/2020 and 08/2022. According to our standard procedures, laboratory parameters were controlled monthly; transient elastography was performed every 3 months, and the treatment duration was 12 months. Results: Treatment response rates after 1 year of treatment were similar to published data from clinical trials. ALT normalization usually occurs between months 2–6 of treatment, followed by a virological response after ≥6 months. Patients with more severe hepatitis at the start of treatment were less likely to respond in the first year of treatment. Loss of HDV-RNA was observed in one-third of patients after ≥1 year of treatment. Low body mass index and high alpha-fetoprotein at baseline were possible predictors of a delayed treatment response. Conclusion: Bulevirtide is a safe treatment option for HDV, leading to a fast hepatological response. Of note, decrease in transaminases precedes virological response. Patients with high viral load and ALT levels respond slower, but nonresponders (as classified by Food and Drug Administration criteria) still show a reduction in viremia. Longer observation periods are required to determine the optimal duration of bulevirtide monotherapy.

Abstract NEMO is a ubiquitin-binding protein which regulates canonical NF-κB pathway activation in innate immune signaling, cell death regulation and host-pathogen interactions. Here we identify an NF-κB-independent function of NEMO in proteostasis regulation by promoting autophagosomal clearance of protein aggregates. NEMO-deficient cells accumulate misfolded proteins upon proteotoxic stress and are vulnerable to proteostasis challenges. Moreover, a patient with a mutation in the NEMO-encoding IKBKG gene resulting in defective binding of NEMO to linear ubiquitin chains, developed a widespread mixed brain proteinopathy, including α-synuclein, tau and TDP-43 pathology. NEMO amplifies linear ubiquitylation at α-synuclein aggregates and promotes the local concentration of p62 into foci. In vitro, NEMO lowers the threshold concentrations required for ubiquitin-dependent phase transition of p62. In summary, NEMO reshapes the aggregate surface for efficient autophagosomal clearance by providing a mobile phase at the aggregate interphase favoring co-condensation with p62.

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a rare and benign form of cutaneous hamartomas. These skin lesions often lead to clinical and histopathological misdiagnosis due to their similarities to cutaneous lesions with overproduction of clustered sebaceous glands. Clinically, the lesions often present as solitary, skin-colored, pedunculated warts to cauliflower-like, exophytic papules and nodules, usually with a diameter ranging 0.5–1.5 cm that rarely exceed 2 cm in size. Only a small number of giant variants are reported in the literature with a diameter in the range of 5–23 cm. The vast majority of the lesions appear in the central face and show a striking predilection for the nose, ears, and scalp, but also emerge on the nipples, extremities, and genitals. Histologically, the epithelial components of folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma comprise dilated infundibular cystic proliferation with surrounding mesenchymal components, which commonly include fibroplasia and vascular and adipose tissue proliferation. These histological characteristics were coined by Kimura and colleagues (1991). To the best of our knowledge, our case represents the biggest variant of giant folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma.

Abstract NADH plays a crucial role in many enzymatically catalysed reactions. Due to the high costs of NADH a regeneration mechanism of this cofactor can enlarge the applications of enzymatic reactions dramatically. This paper gives a thorough system analysis of the mediated electrochemical regeneration of active NADH using cyclic voltammograms and potentiostatic measurements with varying pH, electrode potential, and electrolyte solution, highlighting the system’s limiting conditions, elucidating optimal working parameters for the electrochemical reduction of NAD+, and bringing new insight on the oxidation of inactive reduction products. Using [Cp*Rh(bpy)Cl]+ as an electron mediator dramatically increases the percentage of enzymatically active electrochemically reduced NADH from 15% (direct) to 99% (mediated) with a faradaic efficiency of up to 86%. Furthermore, investigations of the catalytic mechanisms of [Cp*Rh(bpy)Cl]+ clarifies the necessary conditions for its functioning and questions the proposed reaction mechanism by two-step reduction where first the mediator is reduced and then brought in contact with NAD+.

Here, we present a genome screen for association in small scale, employing 11,555 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on DNA chips for genotyping 100 MS patients stratified for HLA-DR2.sup.+ and 100 controls. More than 500 SNPs revealed significant differences between cases and controls before Bonferroni correction. A fraction of these SNPs was reanalysed in two additional cohorts of patients and controls, using high-throughput genotyping methods. A marker on chromosome 6p21.32 (rs2395182) yielded the highest significance level, validating the established HLA-DR association. Epplen, Thomas Lubjuhn Abstract: The benefits of extrapair mating behaviour for females of socially monogamous bird species are unclear despite substantial research effort. The genetic compatibility hypothesis proposes genetic benefits such that females paired to social mates of low genetic compatibility avoid or diminish negative fitness consequences by mating with a more compatible extrapair mate, resulting in offspring of higher genetic quality. Furthermore, within the context of inbreeding depression observed in natural populations, a high degree of overall genetic similarity between social pair mates may be regarded as a special case of genetic incompatibility. We tested the hypothesis that female extrapair matings represent an adaptive behavioural response to avoid negative consequences of being paired to a genetically similar social pair male in the coal tit, Parus ater, a socially monogamous passerine with high rates of extrapair paternity. In contrast to what was predicted, we found no evidence for a positive association between the genetic similarity of social pair mates (measured as band-sharing coefficients from multilocus DNA fingerprints) and the occurrence of extrapair paternity. Furthermore, the genetic similarity of the cuckolding female with its social mate was not higher when compared pairwise to that of its extrapair mate in 63 uniquely composed triplets. Finally, three parameters of reproductive success were not related to the genetic similarity of social pair mates. We conclude that avoiding the potentially negative fitness consequences of being paired to a genetically similar social pair mate did not select for and thus cannot maintain female extrapair mating behaviour in our study population. A field study on the gynogenetic Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa is presented. Multilocus fingerprints and microsatellites are used to investigate the genetic diversity in 339 diploid and 55 triploid individuals and in 25 Poecilia mexicana, its sexual host.

New insights into the pathophysiology of the dystrophic muscle, the identification of compensatory mechanisms and additional proteins interacting with dystrophin are essential for developing new treatments. In order to define molecular mechanisms induced by lack of dystrophin and the subsequent counter-regulatory transcriptional response of degenerating muscle fibres, we have investigated the mRNA expression of 19 functionally linked genes in biopsies of patients with MD by means of real time qRT-PCR. Our results define a uniform transcriptional profile of the dystrophic muscle characterized by degeneration and regeneration. Several genes encoding structural proteins appear remarkably highly expressed. Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are integrated in a wide range of electronic devices that are an integral part of our modern world. Growing number of LIBs that reach their end of life demands development of effective recycling strategies to recover rare and/or expensive battery materials. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is an electrokinetic particle manipulation technique that allows for selective particle separation based on properties, such as material, size, and shape. Here, we demonstrate separation of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and graphite using dielectrophoretic filtration. Graphite and LFP are two common LIB anode and cathode materials. We demonstrate both: non-selective separation using pure suspensions of both graphite and uncoated LFP and an isolation of graphite from a mixture of uncoated LFP and graphite. We confirmed that LFP shows negative DEP while graphite shows positive DEP. We determined the conductivity at which material-selective polarisability-based separation becomes possible, thus, proofing the concept of sorting of non-carbon coated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and graphite. Graphite generally shows high separation efficiency of 70–100 %. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), we found a low separation efficiency of LFP between 1 and 15 % from a mixture of graphite and LFP. These results reinforce one possibility of using DEP filtration as a potential method for direct physical recycling of battery material waste.
