Abstract

We report on the design and characterization of the building blocks of a single-chip wireless chemical sensor fabricated with a commercial complementary metal-oxide-silicon (CMOS) technology, which includes two types of transducers for impedimetric measurements (4-electrode array and two interdigitated electrodes), instrumentation circuits, and a metal coil and circuits for inductive power and data transfer. The electrodes have been formed with a polycrystalline silicon layer of the technology by a simple post-process that does not require additional deposition or lithography steps, but just etching steps. A linear response to both conductivity and permittivity of solutions has been obtained. Wireless communication of the sensor chip with a readout unit has been demonstrated. The design of the chip was prepared for individual block characterization and not for full system characterization. The integration of chemical transducers within monolithic wireless platforms will lead to smaller, cheaper, and more reliable chemical microsensors, and will open up the door to numerous new applications where liquid mediums that are enclosed in sealed receptacles have to be measured.

Abstract

In this paper an integrated circuit for the measurement of the real and imaginary part of an impedance is presented. The circuit is intended for its use in a wireless integrated system. A mixed analog/digital approach has been adopted in order to minimize power and area requirements, as requested by the application. The four electrode configuration is used for impedance measurement using two excitation current sources and a buffer instead of an instrumentation amplifier, therefore reducing the circuit complexity. The digital block controls the working frequency and can compensate the phase error introduced by the analog filters, thereby reducing the total error in the measurement. The integrated circuit has been designed in a CMOS process and it works with 3.3 V with a power consumption of . Experimental results to verify its functionality are presented.

6. Simple and efficient inductive telemetry system with data and power transmission

Abstract

This paper presents an inductive telemetry system useful for isolated applications that have to be powered and/or controlled from outside. The transmitter is based on a Class-E amplifier with ASK modulation generated with a resonant modulation to obtain the different levels to transmit. In the receiver two possible configurations, parallel and serial, are studied and the serial configuration is proposed to reduce the effect of the rectifier and the filter over the received signal. Also an ASK demodulator is fabricated in an ASIC. All the system (transmitter–receiver) has been tested and a 60% of efficiency in power transmission is obtained at a distance of 10 mm. For the data link a bit rate 1 Mbps with a carrier of 8 MHz at a distance of 20 mm has been obtained., This research was partially funded by ESPRIT Cyberhand project IST-1001-35094 and Spanish CYCIT TIC2000-1398-C03-01.
