Ni-Fe nanocatalysts supported on CeO2 have been prepared for the catalysis of methane steam reforming (MSR) aiming for coke-resistant noble metal-free catalysts. The catalysts have been synthesized by traditional incipient wetness impregnation as well as dry ball milling, a green and more sustainable preparation method. The impact of the synthesis method on the catalytic performance and the catalysts’ nanostructure has been investigated. The influence of Fe addition has been addressed as well. The reducibility and the electronic and crystalline structure of Ni and Ni-Fe mono- and bimetallic catalysts have been characterized by temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Their catalytic activity was tested between 700 and 950 °C at 108 L gcat-1 h-1 and with the reactant flow varying between 54 and 415 L gcat-1 h-1 at 700 °C. Hydrogen production rates of 67 mol gmet-1 h-1 have been achieved. The performance of the ball-milled Fe0.1Ni0.9/CeO2 catalyst was similar to that of Ni/CeO2 at high temperatures, but Raman spectroscopy revealed a higher amount of highly defective carbon on the surface of Ni-Fe nanocatalysts. The reorganization of the surface under MSR of the ball-milled NiFe/CeO2 has been monitored by in situ near-ambient pressure XPS experiments, where a strong reorganization of the Ni-Fe nanoparticles with segregation of Fe toward the surface has been observed. Despite the catalytic activity being lower in the low-temperature regime, Fe addition for the milled nanocatalyst increased the coke resistance and could be an efficient alternative to industrial Ni/Al2O3 catalysts.

Monometallic Pd and Ni and bimetallic Pd–Ni catalysts supported on CeO2 are prepared via mechanochemical and conventional incipient wetness impregnation methods and tested for the production of syngas by the partial oxidation of methane. Compared with monometallic Ni/CeO2 and Pd/CeO2, bimetallic Pd–Ni/CeO2 catalysts show considerable higher methane conversion and syngas yield. Additionally, the bimetallic catalysts prepared by ball milling produce syngas at lower temperature. Different preparation parameters, such as metal loading, Pd/Ni ratio, milling energy, milling time and order of incorporation of the metals are examined. The best performance is obtained with a bimetallic catalyst prepared at 50 Hz for 20 min with only 0.12 wt% Pd and 1.38 wt% Ni. Stability tests demonstrate superior stability for bimetallic Pd–Ni/CeO2 catalysts prepared by a mechanochemical approach. From the characterization results, this is explained in terms of an impressive dispersion of metal species with a strong interaction with the surface of CeO2.

The Traspena meteorite fell on 2021 January 18 about 20 km south-east of the city of Lugo (Galiza, Spain), shortly after a huge and bright fireball crossed the sky for 4.84 s. Astrometric measurements obtained from the fireball cameras of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC) as well as from many casual videos were used to determine the atmospheric trajectory of this meteoroid which penetrated the atmosphere and generated sound waves that were detected at three seismic stations. The original meteoroid had a diameter of about 1.15 m and a mass around 2620 kg. It impacted the Earth’s atmosphere with a steep entry angle of about 76 . ◦7 from a height of 75.10 km until fading away at 15.75 km with a velocity of 2.38 km s −1 . Before the impact, this small asteroid was orbiting the Sun with a semimajor axis of 1.125 au, a moderate eccentricity of 0.386, and a low inclination of 4 . ◦55. A weak evidence of dynamic link with the PHA (Potential Hazardous Asteroid) Minos was investigated. During the atmospheric entry, two major fragmentation events occurred between heights of 35 and 29 km at aerodynamic pressures between 1 and 5 MPa. The strewn field was computed after calculating the individual dark flights of the main body along with two smaller fragments. For- tunately, 2 month after the superbolide, a 527-g meteorite was found. It was examined using several geochemical and petrographic analyses which allowed us to classify it as a moderately shocked (S3) L5 ordinary chondrite with a bulk density of 3.25 g cm −3 ., This paper was supported by the Xunta de Galicia (Spain) under the ED431B 2020/38 grant.

Ni-Mg/Al mixed oxide catalysts (Ni2Al, Ni2Mg1Al, and Ni1Mg1Al) obtained from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were tested on the one-pot production of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (TFA) from furfural (FF). Upon calcination at 400 °C and reduction at 500 °C, the LDHs gave catalysts containing small nickel crystallites (99.5%) was achieved on all the catalysts after 4 h at 190 °C and 5.0 MPa of H2 using 5 wt.% FF in ethanol and a furfural-to-catalyst mass ratio of 7.44 g/g. TFA evolved from the sequential hydrogenation of FF to furfuryl alcohol (FA) to TFA. Competing reaction routes involved decarbonylation of FF to furan (FUR) followed by hydrogenation to tetrahydrofuran (THF) or hydrogenolysis to n-butane (BU) and the hydrogenation of the carbonyl group in FF to form 2-methyl furan (mFUR) and its hydrogenation to 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (mTHF). A third competing route consisted of the nucleophilic addition of FF with ethanol and with FA to form acetals (such as 2-(diethoxymethyl)furan, FDA), which were later converted to difurfuryl ether (DFE) and tetrahydrofurfuryl ethyl ether (TFEE) as final products. Hydrogen pressure favored the production of TFA and diminished the formation of acetals, while temperature reduced the capacity of the catalyst to hydrogenate the furan ring, thus reducing TFA and increasing FA and FUR. An 80% yield to TFA was achieved with the Ni2Mg1Al catalysts after 6 h at 190 °C and 50 bar H2, but a variety of coproducts were present at low concentration. Testing of the catalysts in gas-phase hydrogenation conditions at atmospheric pressure revealed a poorer performance, with FA as the main product.

A quartz microreactor containing 28 microchannels of 500 µm width and 105 mm length has been used to photoproduce hydrogen from liquid water-ethanol using an Au/TiO2 photocatalyst and UV light. The photomicroreactor has been tested in two flow configurations: (i) as a catalytic wall photoreactor by coating the microchannels with the photocatalyst, and (ii) as a slurry photoreactor by dispersing the photocatalyst in the liquid mixture of water-ethanol. The catalytic wall photoreactor configuration shows superior performance, with hydrogen yields more than three times higher than those obtained with the best slurry configuration under the same operation conditions.

Macroporous Silicon is a structured material with which innovative optical and electrical characteristics can be obtained. It consists in a crystalline silicon slab where tubular perforations are made. Several fabrication methods exist, electrochemical etching being one of the most versatile. With it, the diameter of the pores can be modulated in depth, resulting in 3D structures. Also, structures with very large aspect ratio (depth / diameter) can be achieved. One particular field of use of macroporous silicon is in photonics. Such applications generally require the fabrication of ordered structures whose dimensions are directly correlated with the optical response of the fabricated devices. In particular pore diameter and lattice pitch define the working wavelengths of the devices. Common uses of optical technology in areas such as communications or gas sensing require working with wavelengths in the Near Infrared (NIR) and the Medium Infrared (MIR) regions. That is, for wavelengths ranging from 1 to 20 microns. Devices able to work in the shorter wavelengths thus call for photonic structures of smaller dimensions. To enable such devices, the macroporous silicon fabrication technology has been developed and improved to allow the fabrication of structures with 700 nm and 500 nm lattice pitch. The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a fundamental role in several energy technologies, which performance and cost-effectiveness are in large part related to the used OER electrocatalyst. Herein, we detail the synthesis of cobalt-iron oxide nanosheets containing controlled amounts of well-anchored SO42- anionic groups (CoFexOy-SO4). We use a cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) as the structural template and a cobalt source and Mohr's salt ((NH4)2Fe(SO4)2·6H2O) as the source of iron and sulfate. When combining the ZIF-67 with ammonium iron sulfate, the protons produced by the ammonium ion hydrolysis (NH4+ + H2O = NH3·H2O + H+) etch the ZIF-67, dissociating its polyhedron structure, and form porous assemblies of two-dimensional nanostructures through a diffusion-controlled process. At the same time, iron ions partially replace cobalt within the structure, and SO42- ions are anchored on the material surface by exchange with organic ligands. As a result, ultrathin CoFexOy-SO4 nanosheets are obtained. The proposed synthetic procedure enables controlling the amount of Fe and SO4 ions and analyzing the effect of each element on the electrocatalytic activity. The optimized CoFexOy-SO4 material displays outstanding OER activity with a 10 mA cm-2 overpotential of 268 mV, a Tafel slope of 46.5 mV dec-1, and excellent stability during 62 h. This excellent performance is correlated to the material's structural and chemical parameters. The assembled nanosheet structure is characterized by a large electrochemically active surface area, a high density of reaction sites, and fast electron transportation. Meanwhile, the introduction of iron increases the electrical conductivity of the catalysts and provides fast reaction sites with optimum bond energy and spin state for the adsorption of OER intermediates. The presence of sulfate ions at the catalyst surface modifies the electronic energy level of active sites, regulates the adsorption of intermediates to reduce the OER overpotential, and promotes the surface charge transfer, which accelerates the formation of oxygenated intermediates. At the initial stage of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) most electrocatalysts undergo structural and chemical surface reconstruction. While this reconstruction strongly influences their performance, it is frequently overlooked. Herein, we analyze the role of the oxidized anions, which is particularly neglected in most previous works. We introduce a range of different anionic groups (Cl-, CH3COO-, NO3-, SO42-) on the surface of an amorphous ZnCoxNiyOz catalyst by a facile proton etching and ion exchange method from a ZIF-8 self-sacrificial template. The structural and chemical properties of the obtained set of materials are thoroughly analysed and correlated with their electrocatalytic performance to study the effect of surface anionic groups, phase transition, metal leaching and defect generation on OER activity. Exploiting the control possibilities provided by the synthesis method here described and employing the uncovered property-performance correlations, the electrocatalyst is optimized. As a result, we produce ZnCo1.25Ni0.73Ox-SO4 catalysts with outstanding OER performances, including a low overpotential of 252 mV at 10 mA cm-2 with a small Tafel slope of 41.6 mV dec-1. Furthermore, this catalyst exhibits remarkable stability with negligible overpotential variation for 100 h. The excellent catalytic properties are rationalized using density functional theory calculations, showing that the surface-adsorbed anions, particularly SO42-, can stabilize the OOH* intermediate, thus enhancing the OER activity. This work o¿ers new insight into the roles of metal leaching and surface-adsorbed anions in the OER progress and facilitates the rational design of highly-efficient electrocatalysts for OER.

The optimization of the supported Pd phase for CH4 activation on Pd/CeO2 catalysts has been a matter of great interest in the recent literature, aiming at the design of efficient methane abatement catalysts for Natural Gas fueled Vehicles (NGVs). Under lean conditions, a mixed Pd0/PdO combination has been indicated as exhibiting the best performance, while controversial results have been reported under stoichiometric conditions depending on the support oxide, where either Al2O3 or zeolite-based supports are usually considered. Here, by means of synchrotron-based in situ NAP-XPS and XRD measurements, we follow the evolution of Pd species on Pd/CeO2 samples prepared by dry mechanochemical synthesis (M) under stoichiometric CH4 oxidation feed, unravelling a stable Pd0/Pd2+ arrangement in a close to 1[thin space (1/6-em)]:[thin space (1/6-em)]1 ratio as the most active palladium state for CH4 activation when excess oxygen is not available, in contrast to what was reported for Pd/alumina materials, where metallic Pd0 nanoparticles showed the highest activity. The combination of NAP-XPS analysis and activity test results highlights the promotional effect of the Pd–Ce interaction, resulting in enhanced oxygen transfer and improved activity and stability of the Pd/CeO2 catalyst prepared by a novel mechanochemical approach even under low O2 content, large excess of water vapor (10 vol%) and high temperature exposure (>700 °C). This paper is focused on the photocatalytic hydrogen production on Pd/TiO2(-WO3) catalysts from water-methanol and water-glycerol mixtures under UVA and solar irradiation. The photodeposition method for Pd was studied varying conditions such as Pd amount, catalyst concentration and methanol concentration. The catalysts were tested at lab scale under simulated solar light and UVA radiation and also at large scale (25 L) under solar energy using a pilot-scale solar Compound Parabolic Collector (CPC). The catalysts characterization was performed by means of ICP-OES, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, XRD, HR-TEM, XPS and DR–UV–Vis spectroscopy. Hydrogen evolution was monitored by on-line gas chromatography.From results it was found the Pd photodeposition method plays a key role to increase the hydrogen evolution, affecting parameters like the Pd amount deposited, the Pd nanoparticles size and dispersion. The highest quantum efficiency (¿) obtained in this study was 11.8% and 41.2% under simulated solar and UVA irradiation, respectively, using Pd(0.24 wt%)/P25 in an aqueous solution of methanol (50 vol%). In the pilot-scale solar CPC, for Pd(0.24 wt%)//P25 catalysts in 5 vol% of methanol or glycerol as sacrificial agents, the quantum yield were 2.1 and 2.2%, respectively. When the concentration of the sacrificial agents decreased to 0.37 vol%, the quantum yields were 1.3 and 2.4% for methanol and glycerol, respectively. Compared to literature, the low noble metal content of these catalysts (0.25 wt%) seems to be a competitive factor considering their high price.

The methane dry reforming (DRM) reaction mechanism was explored via mechanochemically prepared Pd/CeO2 catalysts (PdAcCeO2M), which yield unique Pd–Ce interfaces, where PdAcCeO2M has a distinct reaction mechanism and higher reactivity for DRM relative to traditionally synthesized impregnated Pd/CeO2 (PdCeO2IW). In situ characterization and density functional theory calculations revealed that the enhanced chemistry of PdAcCeO2M can be attributed to the presence of a carbon-modified Pd0 and Ce4+/3+ surface arrangement, where distinct Pd–CO intermediate species and strong Pd–CeO2 interactions are activated and sustained exclusively under reaction conditions. This unique arrangement leads to highly selective and distinct surface reaction pathways that prefer the direct oxidation of CHx to CO, identified on PdAcCeO2M using isotope labeled diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and highlighting linear Pd–CO species bound on metallic and C-modified Pd, leading to adsorbed HCOO [1595 cm–1] species as key DRM intermediates, stemming from associative CO2 reduction. The milled materials contrast strikingly with surface processes observed on IW samples (PdCeO2IW) where the competing reverse water gas shift reaction predominates.

A key step in creating efficient and long-lasting catalysts is understanding their deactivation mechanism(s). On this basis, the behavior of a series of Pd/corundum materials during several hydrogen adsorption/desorption cycles was studied using temperature-programmed desorption coupled with mass spectrometry and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. The materials, prepared by impregnation and by sputtering, presented uniform well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles. In addition, single atoms and small clusters of Pd were only detected in the materials prepared by impregnation. Upon exposure to hydrogen, the Pd nanoparticles smaller than 2 nm and the single atoms did not present any change, while the larger ones presented a core–shell morphology, where the core was Pd and the shell was PdHx. The results suggest that the long-term activity of the materials prepared by impregnation can be attributed solely to the presence of small clusters and single atoms of Pd.

Bimetallic Pt–Pd catalysts supported on ceria have been prepared by mechanochemical synthesis and tested for lean methane oxidation in dry and wet atmosphere. Results show that the addition of platinum has a negative effect on transient light-off activity, but for Pd/Pt molar ratios between 1:1 and 8:1 an improvement during time-on-stream experiments in wet conditions is observed. The bimetallic samples undergo a complex restructuring during operation, starting from the alloying of Pt and Pd and resulting in the formation of unprecedented “mushroom-like” structures consisting of PdO bases with Pt heads as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis. On milled samples, these structures are well-defined and observed at the interface between palladium and ceria, whereas those on the impregnated catalyst appear less ordered and are located randomly on the surface of ceria and of large PdPt clusters. The milled catalyst prepared by first milling Pd metal and ceria followed by the addition of Pt shows better performances compared to a conventional impregnated sample and also to a sample obtained by inverting the Pd–Pt milling order. This has been ascribed to the intimate contact between Pd and CeO2 generated at the nanoscale during the milling process.

The shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPS) and the sluggish Li-S conversion kinetics are two main barriers toward the practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, we propose the addition of copper selenide nanoparticles at the cathode to trap LiPS and accelerate the Li-S reaction kinetics. Using both computational and experimental results, we demonstrate the crystal phase and concentration of copper vacancies to control the electronic structure of the copper selenide, its affinity toward LiPS chemisorption, and its electrical conductivity. The adjustment of the defect density also allows for tuning the electrochemically active sites for the catalytic conversion of polysulfide. The optimized S/Cu1.8Se cathode efficiently promotes and stabilizes the sulfur electrochemistry, thus improving significantly the LSB performance, including an outstanding cyclability over 1000 cycles at 3 C with a capacity fading rate of just 0.029% per cycle, a superb rate capability up to 5 C, and a high areal capacity of 6.07 mAh cm-2 under high sulfur loading. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a biobased platform chemical that can be valorized into a spectrum of valuable products. In this report, supported Ir, Ir–Co, Ir–Ni, and Ir–Ru catalysts were investigated for this purpose. Only hydrogenation of HMF to 2,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) occurred over all catalysts. The effect of the second metal (Co, Ni, and Ru) on Ir/SiO2 was reflected by the kinetic constants being in the order Ir–Ni/SiO2 > Ir–Co/SiO2 > Ir–Ru/SiO2. The oxophilic nature of the secondary metal improved the catalytic performance of the bimetallic catalysts compared to the monometallic iridium catalyst (Ir/SiO2). Addition of HCOOH and H2SO4 as cocatalysts is a strategy to reach one-pot conversion of HMF to 2,5-di-methylfuran (DMF). Over-hydrogenolysis products such as 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran were formed when only H2SO4 was added, giving higher activity compared to addition of HCOOH. Simultaneous presence of acids gave the highest HMF conversion, promoting esterification to 5-formyloxymethyl furfural and allowing the one-pot transformation of HMF to DMF. Thermodynamic analysis of HMF transformations revealed that both hydrogenation and dehydration steps are feasible.

The methane dry reforming (DRM) reaction mechanism was explored via mechanochemically prepared Pd/CeO

Nanocomposites based on titanium dioxide loaded with metal nanoparticles (Au and Pt) and activated carbon were synthesized and tested for hydrogen photogeneration in the gas phase using a mixture of alcohol-water (methanol, ethanol, and bioethanol). The photocatalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, UV-vis, and transient photocurrent response measurements. The influence of the metal, the ratio of titanium oxide to active carbon, and the type of alcohol used in the reaction mixture on hydrogen photogeneration were investigated. The highest hydrogen photoproduction rate was obtained on the photocatalyst containing a weight ratio of 1:1 of activated carbon:TiO2 and loaded with 1 wt. % Pt, which was also the sample showing the highest transient photocurrent response.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique has been widely used to analyze the electrical properties of a large number of materials. In this study, the electrical properties of CeO2 pellets under CO oxidation conditions have been analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. CeO2 pellets have been prepared by a conventional precipitation method and sintered at low temperature to satisfy a compromise between large surface area and a high relative density of the pellet. The electrical properties of CeO2 have been investigated under different atmosphere conditions such as N2, O2, CO, CO2, or selected combinations. The electrical sensitivity of CeO2 to the surrounding atmosphere allows to follow the catalytic reaction as a function of the CO¿:¿O2 ratio and temperature. The appropriate analysis of the electrical response by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy could open a new insight to monitor the catalytic response and behavior of any catalyst.

Existing literature data have been used to model the steam reforming of ethanol on catalytic honeycombs coated with Rh-Pd/CeO2, which have shown an excellent performance and robustness for the production of hydrogen under realistic conditions. In this article, a fully 3D non-isothermal model is presented, where the reactions of ethanol decomposition, water gas shift, and methane steam reforming have been modelled under different operational pressures (1–10 bar) and temperatures (500–1200 K) at a steam to carbon ratio of S/C = 3 and a space time of W/F between 2·10−3 and 3 kg h Lliq−1. According to the modelling results, a maximum hydrogen yield of 80% is achieved at a working temperature of 1150 K and a pressure of 4 bar at S/C = 3.

Gas-phase catalytic conversion of glycerol to value added chemicals was investigated over zinc-supported copper and nickel catalysts. The addition of aluminum in the support was also investigated in glycerol conversion and the results indicate an increase in the acidity and adsorption capacity for both copper and nickel catalysts. HRTEM and XRD analysis revealed NiZn alloy formation in the Ni/ZnO catalyst. The XRD patterns of the prepared ZnAl mixed oxide catalysts show the presence of Gahanite phase (ZnAl2O4). In addition, H2 chemisorption and TPR results suggest a strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) effect between Ni and ZnO particles. Bare supports ZnO and ZnAl (Zn/Al = 0.5) were investigated in the glycerol conversion and they did not present activity. Copper supported on ZnO and ZnAl mixed oxide (Zn/Al = 0.5) was active towards hydroxyacetone formation. Nickel was active in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol both for C–C and C–O bonds cleavage of glycerol producing CH4. Strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) between Ni and ZnO has a remarkable suppression effect on the methanation activity during the glycerol conversion.
