Abstract

While there is increasing recognition that social processes in cities like gentrification have ecological consequences, we lack nuanced understanding of the ways gentrification affects urban biodiversity. We analyzed a large camera trap dataset of mammals (>500 g) to evaluate how gentrification impacts species richness and community composition across 23 US cities. After controlling for the negative effect of impervious cover, gentrified parts of cities had the highest mammal species richness. Change in community composition was associated with gentrification in a few cities, which were mostly located along the West Coast. At the species level, roughly half (11 of 21 mammals) had higher occupancy in gentrified parts of a city, especially when impervious cover was low. Our results indicate that the impacts of gentrification extend to nonhuman animals, which provides further evidence that some aspects of nature in cities, such as wildlife, are chronically inaccessible to marginalized human populations.

Abstract

Human-driven environmental changes shape ecological communities from local to global scales. Within cities, landscape-scale patterns and processes and species characteristics generally drive local-scale wildlife diversity. However, cities differ in their structure, species pools, geographies and histories, calling into question the extent to which these drivers of wildlife diversity are predictive at continental scales. In partnership with the Urban Wildlife Information Network, we used occurrence data from 725 sites located across 20 North American cities and a multi-city, multi-species occupancy modelling approach to evaluate the effects of ecoregional characteristics and mammal species traits on the urbanization-diversity relationship. Among 37 native terrestrial mammal species, regional environmental characteristics and species traits influenced within-city effects of urbanization on species occupancy and community composition. Species occupancy and diversity were most negatively related to urbanization in the warmer, less vegetated cities. Additionally, larger-bodied species were most negatively impacted by urbanization across North America. Our results suggest that shifting climate conditions could worsen the effects of urbanization on native wildlife communities, such that conservation strategies should seek to mitigate the combined effects of a warming and urbanizing world.

26. Elements of residential security in comparative focus : renting homes in Great Britain and Ireland

Abstract

The revival of private renting was a defining, if largely unexpected, development during the post-1998 period. Many households, priced out of ownership or faced with growing social housing waiting lists, were channelled towards an ultra-low residential security model which privileged the property rights of landlords above most, if not all, other policies. This exposed many to insecurity in the form of, so called, no fault evictions, unaffordable rents, relatively poorer housing conditions, and increased risk of homelessness. As the revival of private renting took hold, powerful forces of political separation were unlocked by a process of devolution in the UK. This allowed the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly to follow the lead of Dáil Éireann, in the Republic of Ireland, and reform residential security regimes to extend protections for private tenants. Yet despite these changes, there is a strong degree of continuity in the underlying housing politics driving reform and, in particular, how policy makers have continued to conceptualise private renting, and indeed, private renters in much the same highly commodified terms. How can this inherent tension between change and continuity be resolved? This thesis aims to demonstrate the development of a common residential security regime in the private sector in the UK and the Republic of Ireland through an analysis of the historical development of housing law and policy at critical junctures. This common residential security regime survived the political separation of Northern Ireland and, what would become, the Republic of Ireland, and endured to the end of the 20th century, thus setting the basis for post-1998 developments. Although the historical development of this residential security regime is considered, the primary focus is on how this regime has been impacted by the forces of political separation during the post-1998 period. The central thesis is that while tenant protections against eviction and rent increases have been extended during this period, the strong degree of continuity in housing politics behind these reforms has led to the setting of regulatory red lines which have limited the development of substantial legal difference. The conclusion is that although there are positive features to the various post-1998 reforms, they do not signal a fundamental rejection of the ultra-low residential security model. Rather, key features of that regime have been carried forward into the various reforms. As the revival of private renting solidifies, many of the social problems associated with that model are likely to grow in stature. The normative argument is made that a meaningful break with the ultra-low residential security model can be achieved through a fundamental change in approach to residential security that prioritises the use value of housing as a home. One such alternative approach may be based on the human right to housing in international law. This offers valuable normative content to re-organise security of tenure and rent regulation in a way that places the individual, and their dignity, at the centre of residential security.

Abstract

BackgroundThe treatment paradigm for metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) patients is evolving. PET/CT now offers improved sensitivity and accuracy in staging. Recent randomized trial data supports escalated hormone therapy, local primary tumor therapy, and metastasis-directed therapy. The impact of combining such therapies into a multimodal approach is unknown. This Phase II single-arm clinical trial sponsored and funded by Veterans Affairs combines local, metastasis-directed, and systemic therapies to durably render patients free of detectable disease off active therapy.MethodsPatients with newly-diagnosed M1a/b prostate cancer (PSMA PET/CT staging is permitted) and 1-5 radiographically visible metastases (excluding pelvic lymph nodes) are undergoing local treatment with radical prostatectomy, limited duration systemic therapy for a total of six months (leuprolide, abiraterone acetate with prednisone, and apalutamide), metastasis-directed stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and post-operative fractionated radiotherapy if pT ≥ 3a, N1, or positive margins are present. Abstract

Emerging pathogenic fungi have become a topic of conservation concern due to declines observed in several host taxa. One emerging fungal pathogen, Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, is well documented as the causative agent of ophidiomycosis, otherwise known as snake fungal disease (SFD). O. ophidiicola has been found to cause disease in a variety of snake species across the United States, including the eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus), a federally threatened rattlesnake species. Most work to date has involved detecting O. ophidiicola for diagnosis of infection through direct sampling of snakes, and attempts to detect O. ophidiicola in the abiotic environment to better understand its distribution, seasonality, and habitat associations are lacking. We collected topsoil and groundwater samples from four macrohabitat types across multiple seasons in northern Michigan at a site where Ophidiomyces infection has been confirmed in eastern massasauga. Using a quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay developed for O. ophidiicola, we detected Ophidiomyces DNA in topsoil but observed minimal to no detection in groundwater samples. Detection frequency did not differ between habitats, but samples grouped seasonally showed higher detection during mid-summer. We found no relationships of detection with hypothesized environmental correlates such as soil pH, temperature, or moisture content. Furthermore, the distribution of Ophidiomyces positive samples across the site was not linked to estimated space use of massasaugas. Our data suggests that season has some effect on the presence of Ophidiomyces. Differences in presence between habitats may exist but are likely more dependent on the time of sampling and currently uninvestigated soil or biotic parameters. These findings build on our understanding of Ophidiomyces ecology and epidemiology to help inform where and when snakes may be exposed to the fungus in the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Due to a large and growing collection of genomic and experimental resources, Brachypodium distachyon has emerged as a powerful experimental model for the grasses. To add to these resources we sequenced 21 165 T-DNA lines, 15 569 of which were produced in this study. This increased the number of unique insertion sites in the T-DNA collection by 21 078, bringing the overall total to 26 112. Thirty-seven per cent (9754) of these insertion sites are within genes (including untranslated regions and introns) and 28% (7217) are within 500 bp of a gene. Approximately 31% of the genes in the v.2.1 annotation have been tagged in this population. To demonstrate the utility of this collection, we phenotypically characterized six T-DNA lines with insertions in genes previously shown in other systems to be involved in cellulose biosynthesis, hemicellulose biosynthesis, secondary cell wall development, DNA damage repair, wax biosynthesis and chloroplast synthesis. In all cases, the phenotypes observed supported previous studies, demonstrating the utility of this collection for plant functional genomics. Abstract

Wildlife must adapt to human presence to survive in the Anthropocene, so it is critical to understand species responses to humans in different contexts. We used camera trapping as a lens to view mammal responses to changes in human activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 163 species sampled in 102 projects around the world, changes in the amount and timing of animal activity varied widely. Under higher human activity, mammals were less active in undeveloped areas but unexpectedly more active in developed areas while exhibiting greater nocturnality. Carnivores were most sensitive, showing the strongest decreases in activity and greatest increases in nocturnality. Wildlife managers must consider how habituation and uneven sensitivity across species may cause fundamental differences in human–wildlife interactions along gradients of human influence.

Abstract

While camera traps can effectively detect semi-aquatic mammal species, they are also often temporally and monetarily inefficient and have a difficult time detecting smaller bodied, elusive mammals. Recent studies have shown that extracting DNA from environmental samples can be a non-invasive, alternative method of detecting elusive species. Environmental DNA (eDNA) has not yet been used to survey American mink (Neogale vison), a cryptic and understudied North American mustelid. To help determine best survey practices for the species, we compared the effectiveness and efficiency of eDNA and camera traps in surveys for American mink. We used both methods to monitor the shoreline of seven bodies of water in northeastern Indiana from March to May 2021. We extracted DNA from filtered environmental water samples and used quantitative real-time PCR to determine the presence of mink at each site. We used Akaike's Information Criterion to rank probability of detection models with and without survey method as a covariate. We detected mink at four of the seven sites and seven of the 21 total survey weeks using camera traps (probability of detection (ρ) = 0.36). We detected mink at five sites and during five survey weeks using eDNA (ρ = 0.25). However, the highest probability of detection was obtained when both methods were combined, and data were pooled (ρ = 0.47). Survey method did not influence model fit, suggesting no difference in detectability between camera traps and eDNA. Environmental DNA was twice as expensive, but only required a little over half (58%) of the time when compared to camera trapping. We recommend ways in which an improved eDNA methodology may be more cost effective for future studies. Drawing on the authors' experience of being involved as technical experts in Southampton City Council's interrogation of the private rented sector, the paper considers the potential and the limitations of local government scrutiny inquires as a mechanism for assisting in the achievement of social justice. Scrutiny Inquiries are a relatively new democratic initiative introduced to provide a counterbalance to the greater concentration of powers in the council executive brought about by the Local Government Act 2000. The paper contributes to the literature on local government scrutiny, which is currently driven by public administration scholarship, by developing a holistic socio-legal analysis that seeks to embed a single case study within the wider complex legal, political and social environment. Although Scrutiny Inquiries empower back-bench local councillors and, to a lesser extent, promote community engagement in local government decision making, the paper identifies how austerity localism and reforms to the broader accountability environment have exposed gaps in the system of oversight of local government performance. Nonetheless we found there was political potential in the scrutiny inquiry process because it mobilised landlords and tenants in the city and provided a template for local action on private renting. Abstract

Recent evidence has strongly supported that the rate of aging is controlled, at least to some extent, by evolutionarily conserved nutrient sensing pathways (e.g. the insulin/IGF-1-signaling, mTOR, AMPK, and sirtuins) from worms to humans. These pathways are also commonly involved in carcinogenesis and cancer metabolism. Agents (e.g. metformin, resveratrol, and Rhodiola) that target these nutrient sensing pathways often have both anti-aging and anti-cancer efficacy. These agents not only reprogram energy metabolism of malignant cells, but also target normal postmitotic cells by suppressing their conversion into senescent cells, which confers systematic metabolism benefits. These agents are fundamentally different from chemotherapy (e.g. paclitaxel and doxorubicin) or radiation therapy that causes molecular damage (e.g. DNA and protein damages) and thereby no selection resistance may be expected. By reviewing molecular mechanisms of action, epidemiological evidence, experimental data in tumor models, and early clinical study results, this review provides information supporting the promising use of agents with both anti-aging and anti-cancer efficacy for cancer chemoprevention.

45. Using Educational Psychology Courses at a Military Academy to Help Foster Mentoring Relationships between Officers and Cadets

Abstract

In the "hands on" mentoring program describing in this paper, cadets enrolled in a traditional undergraduate Educational Psychology course at the U.S. Air Force Academy) were mentored by Air Officer Commanders (AOCs) enrolled in a graduate level Educational Psychology course. This mentoring program was ideal for both groups of students, as the mentors were all experienced military officers and the undergraduates were a year away from being commissioned military officers. This mentoring program was specifically designed to enable the graduate students to mentor the undergraduates by sharing both their educational and military experiences as they relate them to the theories and concepts we discussed in class. Evaluations were given at the mid-point and end of the semester to all of the students to assess their development and attitudes about their respective course. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used to describe the students' attitudes and applications of the course. In general, positive feedback about the mentoring process was received from both the mentors and the mentees. (Contains 1 table.)
