2. The Cost of Success: Exploring the Impact of Textbook Costs at a Hispanic-Serving R1 Institution

Abstract

The cost of textbooks is a significant concern for undergraduate students, particularly at institutions serving marginalized populations. This study explores this issue at the University of New Mexico, a Hispanic-Serving R1 institution. A comprehensive survey was conducted among undergraduate students to understand their perceptions of textbook costs and its impact on their academic success. The survey covered aspects such as the perceived reasonableness of costs, budgeting practices, and strategies to manage expenses. The results revealed that high textbook costs significantly affect students' financial well-being and academic success. Many students perceive these costs as unreasonable, leading to financial strain. Students employ various strategies to manage these expenses, including purchasing from vendors other than the campus bookstore, renting, or sharing books with classmates. This study underscores the need for enhanced support and resources to alleviate the financial burden of textbook costs on students, contributing valuable insights to the literature on this subject.

11. 'It Was Natural and Real-Life': Book Clubs as Professional Development for Preservice Teachers

Abstract

Decades of research indicate teacher dissatisfaction with traditional professional development (PD), while a growing body of research literature indicates the value of heutagogical and andragogical learning in PD. This case study examines the experiences of 43 preservice teachers as they took part in professional development book clubs as part of regular coursework in their educator preparation program. The participants' communities of practice were established across varied platforms: face-to-face meetings, social media groups, and the university learning management system. Participants also collaborated with novel peers from heterogeneous cohorts. Survey data was collected and analyzed to better understand participants' perceptions of the usefulness of the book club PD. Findings include preservice teachers' evaluation of the both the value and format of book clubs as a professional development tool. Implications include suggestions for meaningful collaboration in virtual settings.

26. Overwhelming Whiteness: A Critical Analysis of Race in a Scripted Reading Curriculum

Abstract

Teachers in the US are increasingly required to use scripted curricula. Such instructional materials often reflect the overwhelming whiteness of the publishing industry through a lack of representation of authors and protagonists outside of white, middle-class normative characters. Implementation of such curricula stands in direct contrast to studies finding that culturally relevant pedagogy and curricula benefit students across racial and ethnic groups. This paper describes a qualitative analysis of the scripted "Wit and Wisdom" English Language Arts curriculum for grades K-8 guided by the research question: How might the curriculum reproduce a white supremacist master script? Following a quantitative analysis of racial representation across all core and supplementary texts in the curriculum, the research team used guiding questions grounded in a critical discourse and anti-racist teaching framework to qualitatively analyse teacher-facing materials at each grade level. The findings of this study indicate that whiteness is centred at every level of the curriculum in text selection and thematic grouping of texts, as well as through discursive moves in teacher-facing materials (e.g. essential questions for learning modules). Based on the findings, the research team suggests mechanisms for individual and collective efforts to resist whiteness-centred curricula at the system, school, and classroom level.

Abstract

It's easy to consider artificial intelligence (AI) to be a potential challenge to human leadership, given its ability to handle many cognitive tasks traditionally linked to decision-making. However, while AI may take over these "hard" elements, it will increase the importance of "soft" leadership traits such as personality, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. As AI advances, leaders will need to focus more on traits like humility, adaptability, vision, and engagement, which AI cannot replicate. Ultimately, AI will shift leadership focus from hard skills to soft skills, emphasizing qualities that foster collaboration and innovation in a rapidly changing world.

29. 'These things don't happen by magic' : charismatic autonomy in festival production in the English East Midlands

Abstract

Festivals are special times in social life. They interrupt everyday life for periods of celebration. But festivals don’t happen by magic; they are the result of on-going, hidden work by festival producers. Urban arts festivals are multifaceted social phenomena reliant on complex place-based and cultural interest networks. They navigate values and norms with varied identity, place, economic and social meanings. This thesis questions how this largely invisible work shapes urban life, who undertakes this labour, what motivates them, who else is involved and how producers’ underlying value systems influence their effects in regional urban areas in England. In order to address the complexity of festivals as sites and artefacts, research for this thesis was multi-method. Ethnographic methods, cultural production and institutional concepts were synthesised with policy analysis and crystallised into a tripartite Weberian ideal type framework. The typology distinguished between festival’s primary purposes linked to their hetero-regulatory interest groups: arts curation based on aesthetic judgement; commercial priorities within creative industry sectors; and civic outcomes linked to public policies. Three case-studies, one of each type, were researched using thick description techniques to identify themes. The thesis is split into a theoretical section followed by ethnographic research to develop three case-studies: Buxton International Festival, Leicester Comedy Festival and Derby Festé. It asks if festivals are hetero-regulated institutions or autonomous, charismatic actors within their localities and concludes the case-studies were strongly influenced by their founders’ professional habitus within their artistic fields. Although responsive to structural heteronomy in their respective cities, they all resisted pressures to commercialise or lower artistic standards. The thesis concludes festivals are sites where values are negotiated throughout the production cycle and historically as festivals develop and align with wider interests. Policy discourses used to justify public subsidy mask influential players’ power within localities. Professional expertise from founders’ cultural habitus was found to give them intrinsic and instrumental charismatic power. In viewing festivals as cyclical events produced by enduring organisations, this thesis contributes to the field by illuminating festival producers’ charismatic autonomy within the context of hetero-regulatory authorising environments shaped by neoliberal cultural and urban policies.

Spelling instruction has been researched over the last several decades, but unfortunately, researchers have determined that best practices have not generally transferred to classroom practice. The authors explored how quality word study professional development rooted in nonnegotiable tenets provided a framework for teacher and student construction of knowledge and practice. This work resulted in reframed conceptual knowledge on the part of the teachers and achievement growth on the part of the students.

Abstract

Purpose It is clinically challenging to integrate genomic-classifier results that report a numeric risk of recurrence into treatment recommendations for localized prostate cancer, which are founded in the framework of risk groups. We aimed to develop a novel clinical-genomic risk grouping system that can readily be incorporated into treatment guidelines for localized prostate cancer. Materials and Methods Two multicenter cohorts (n = 991) were used for training and validation of the clinical-genomic risk groups, and two additional cohorts (n = 5,937) were used for reclassification analyses. Competing risks analysis was used to estimate the risk of distant metastasis. Time-dependent c-indices were constructed to compare clinicopathologic risk models with the clinical-genomic risk groups. Results With a median follow-up of 8 years for patients in the training cohort, 10-year distant metastasis rates for National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) low, favorable-intermediate, unfavorable-intermediate, and high-risk were 7.3%, 9.2%, 38.0%, and 39.5%, respectively. In contrast, the three-tier clinical-genomic risk groups had 10-year distant metastasis rates of 3.5%, 29.4%, and 54.6%, for low-, intermediate-, and high-risk, respectively, which were consistent in the validation cohort (0%, 25.9%, and 55.2%, respectively). C-indices for the clinical-genomic risk grouping system (0.84; 95% CI, 0.61 to 0.93) were improved over NCCN (0.73; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.86) and Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment (0.74; 95% CI, 0.65 to 0.84), and 30% of patients using NCCN low/intermediate/high would be reclassified by the new three-tier system and 67% of patients would be reclassified from NCCN six-tier (very-low- to very-high-risk) by the new six-tier system. Conclusion A commercially available genomic classifier in combination with standard clinicopathologic variables can generate a simple-to-use clinical-genomic risk grouping that more accurately identifies patients at low, intermediate, and high risk for metastasis and can be easily incorporated into current guidelines to better risk-stratify patients.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a risk factor for experiencing left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) declines during receipt of potentially cardiotoxic breast cancer (BC) treatment. We sought to determine whether the hypertension stage is associated with LVEF decline during BC treatment. METHODS: Across 24 centers, cardiac magnetic resonance measures of LVEF and brachial arterial blood pressure (BP) measurements were performed in women with stages I to III BC before and 3 months after initiating potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy. Using multivariable analysis, we assessed in a blinded fashion the association between 3-month ΔLVEF and precancer treatment American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology stages of hypertension. RESULTS: Among 204 women, age averaged 56±1 years with 75% being White and 20% of Black race. Participants received anthracycline (45.6%), trastuzumab (22.5%), cyclophosphamide (52.9%), or paclitaxel (50%). After accounting for pretreatment LVEF, diabetes status, tobacco use, age, the number of antihypertensive medications, and body mass index, those with stage II hypertension experienced an LVEF decline of −2.89% ([95% CI, −0.69% to −5.19%]; P =0.01) relative to individuals with normal BP. Other stages saw nonsignificant declines relative to normal BP to elevated BP (−1.63% [95% CI, −0.62% to 3.88%]; P =0.16) and stage I hypertension (−0.94% [95% CI, −0.90% to 2.78%]; P =0.32). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with women receiving treatment for BC with normal BP, there is a stronger association of decline in LVEF in women with stage II hypertension relative to women with other hypertension stages. This raises the possibility that stage along with hypertension presence may be associated with an increased risk for the LVEF decline among women receiving potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy for BC.
