4. Nature-Based Instruction for Science Learning: Insights and Interpretive Considerations for Research and Practice

Abstract

In school-based research, isolating the potential effects of a single variable while attempting to maintain typical classroom routines is always a challenge. Unfortunately, the challenges and methodological approaches to overcoming them are often only shallowly reported, perhaps due to word limits or assumptions that those details are irrelevant to the findings. Thus, future research is unnecessarily impeded, destined to repeat the same mistakes. In this article, we reflect on the design and methodological strengths of our study of nature-based instruction (NBI) and how some strengths also created challenges with implications for interpreting the findings of our study (published in a companion paper, Faber Taylor, Butts-Wilmsmeyer, and Jordan 2022). In that study, we attempted to isolate the potential effects of NBI compared to classroom-based instruction on science learning and to test for potential mechanisms and moderating variables. We share insights in hopes of supporting others' research design and nature-based educational practice.

9. Nature-Based Instruction for Science Learning -- A Good Fit for All: A Controlled Comparison of Classroom versus Nature

Abstract

Science lessons in nature are appealing and potentially supportive of children's learning, but little is known about how and for whom they are effective. A within-subjects, experimental, mixed methods design was employed with 92 4th-graders to determine if, why and for whom science learning is better through outdoor, nature-based instruction (NBI) compared to indoor, classroom-based instruction (CBI). Moderating variables, including student socioeconomic status, gender, English Learner status and connectedness to nature and mechanistic variables of perceived stress, engagement in learning, attention, and impulsivity were evaluated. Though the physical conditions for NBI were less optimal, NBI supported science learning as well as CBI, and for a broader range of students. With CBI, child demographics had a significant impact on science scores. In contrast, with NBI, all students performed similarly, suggesting NBI is a supportive strategy for a broad range of students.

14. Exploring a possible tonal loop in musicians and non-musicians and the relationship between musical expertise and cognitive ageing

Abstract

This thesis explored two main research questions, firstly investigating whether musical expertise offers a performance advantage in working memory for sequences of tones that vary in pitch, and secondly whether any advantage of musical expertise may be present in older as well as younger individuals. Previous research on working memory for tone sequences has reported that articulatory suppression interferes with temporary storage of verbal but not with tone sequences (Koelsch et al, 2009), suggesting a “tonal loop” within a musician’s working memory (Schulze, Zysset, Mueller, Friederici, & Koelsch, 2011) that complements the phonological loop for verbal material in musicians and non-musicians alike (e.g., Baddeley, 1986; 1992). The five experiments reported here explored detection of a pitch change between pairs of tone sequences with or without concurrent articulatory suppression or singing suppression. In Experiment 1, with pairs of auditory tonal (in a musical key) sequences to be compared, singing suppression impaired non-musicians significantly more than musicians, although both groups showed an impairment, whereas only non-musicians were affected by verbal articulatory suppression. In Experiment 2, conducted only with musicians who could read music, the first sequence of each pair was presented visually and the second sequence for comparison was presented aurally. Musicians were again impaired by singing suppression but not by articulatory suppression. For Experiment 3, for auditory atonal (no musical key) pairs of sequences, non-musicians performed at floor, and musicians were again significantly more impaired by singing suppression than by articulatory suppression. In contrast, for Experiment 4, only with musicians who could read music, for visually presented atonal sequences each followed by an auditory atonal sequence for comparison, musicians were significantly more impaired by articulatory suppression than singing suppression. These results suggest that for tonal sequences, musicians use their musical training and experience, coupled with subvocalised singing, but for atonal sequences, additional strategies involving phonological rehearsal may be used. Non-musicians may also rely on musical experience and subvocal singing for tonal sequences but seem to be unable to do so for atonal sequences. Results are consistent with the use by both musicians and non-musicians of a tonal loop for the rehearsal of tone sequences, which develops with musical training and may be used in addition to subvocal rehearsal. Previous research has suggested musical expertise may offer some protection against cognitive ageing (Hanna-Pladdy & MacKay, 2011; Amer, Kalender, Hasher, Trehub, & Wong, 2013). Experiment 5 in this thesis explored whether a lifetime of musical training and experience may offer the same advantages in old age for retaining tone sequences that had been found in Experiments 1 and 3 for younger musicians. This experiment also considered whether any advantage for older musicians on this task could be explained by the proposed “bilingual advantage” (e.g., Bialystok, Craik, Klein & Viswanathan, 2004), and what other aspects of cognition might be associated with tone sequence memory performance. A test battery was utilised with 74 older adults (60-80 years of age) to assess the influence of musical and language expertise, and cognitive abilities (attention, working memory capacity, self-reported prospective and retrospective memory) on the music-related pitch sequence comparison task from Experiments 1 and 3. Working memory capacity was found to predict individual differences in the ability to detect pitch changes between pairs of tone sequences, regardless of musical experience. Older musicians performed more poorly on the pitch change detection task overall than the younger musicians in the earlier experiments, but their performance on the task was significantly better than for age-matched non-musically trained peers who were close to floor for both tonal and atonal sequences, suggesting some benefit from a lifetime of musical experience.

22. Competency-Based Faculty Development in Community-Engaged Scholarship: A Diffusion of Innovation Approach

Abstract

The authors utilized interviews, competency surveys, and document review to evaluate the effectiveness of a one-year, cohort-based faculty development pilot program, grounded in diffusion of innovations theory, and aimed at increasing competencies in community engagement and community-engaged scholarship. Five innovator participants designed the program for five early adopter participants. The program comprised training sessions and individual mentoring. Training sessions focused on the history and concepts of community-engaged scholarship; competencies in engaged research and teaching; and navigation of career advancement as a community-engaged scholar. Mentoring focused on individual needs or discipline-specific issues. The interviews and surveys indicated that the participants gained knowledge in specific areas of community-engaged scholarship. Critical program features and lessons learned are explored. (Contains 1 table and 2 figures.)

23. Faculty for the Engaged Campus: Advancing Community-Engaged Careers in the Academy

Abstract

Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) is a national membership organization that promotes health equity and social justice through partnerships between communities and higher education institutions. In response to faculty concerns about the institutional barriers to community-engaged careers in the academy, CCPH embarked on a series of national initiatives centered on a two-pronged change strategy: (1) to support community-engaged faculty members going up for promotion and tenure in a system unlikely to change in time to benefit them, and (2) to work toward longer-term systems change. CCPH's initiative, Faculty for the Engaged Campus, aimed to strengthen community-engaged career paths in the academy by developing innovative competency-based models of faculty development, facilitating peer review and dissemination of products of community-engaged scholarship, and supporting community-engaged faculty members through the promotion and tenure process. In this article, the authors describe these challenges, the approaches taken to address them, lessons learned, and observations for the future. Subsequent articles in this thematic issue of the "Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement" report on the design and impact of the initiative's components. (Contains 3 figures.)

One year after its launch, the authors conducted an online survey of CES4Health.info contributing authors, reviewers, and users of published products. Early evidence suggests that CES4Health.info may be helpful for recognizing community-engaged scholarship in promotion and tenure processes and for providing communities with resources to address community health concerns. 26. The Community Impact Statement: A Prenuptial Agreement for Community-Campus Partnerships

Abstract

The Phillips Neighborhood Healthy Housing Collaborative learned valuable lessons through its work on two community-based participatory research projects in which it established a principled model of shared power and identifiable, mutual community-university benefits. A community impact statement (CIS) has evolved from this work. Like an environmental impact statement for a real estate development or a prenuptial agreement between two marriage partners with a large amount of resources to learn to share, an agreement must be developed before the work of the community-university partnership can begin. However, as in an EIS and the prenuptial agreement, the strength and the success of the partnership is dependent not only on the partners involved, their relationship, and the reasons for their union, but on the process by which the relationship and its benefits or assets are clearly defined. The CIS provides that process for community-university partnerships.

The issues highlighted in this synthesis represent critical areas of work in family and community connections with schools where clarification, agreement, and further development are needed, as well as promising new directions that are emerging. By continuing to strengthen the research in the field we can help ensure that schools, families, and communities can come together to produce positive outcomes. Abstract

Purpose: To review the neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of Lyme disease at a central Ohio pediatric tertiary care center. Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed as having Lyme disease from September 2015 to September 2020 was completed. Demographic information, diagnosis dates, and manifestations of Lyme disease were recorded. Patients were excluded for age older than 18 years or lack of corroborated Lyme disease diagnosis. Descriptive statistics were performed. Results: Of the 212 cases of pediatric Lyme disease reviewed, 50 patients had neuroborreliosis. The data showed an increase in Lyme disease and neuroborreliosis cases from 2018 to 2020, with a preponderance of diagnoses in the summer months. Twenty-four patients had meningitis, and 6 of these patients (25%) were diagnosed as having bilateral optic disc edema that was clinically consistent with intracranial hypertension. Conclusions: Papilledema in the setting of Lyme meningitis may be more common than previously reported in central Ohio. If Lyme disease meningitis is suspected, an opening pressure should be recorded at the time of lumbar puncture and, if elevated, an ophthalmologic evaluation for optic nerve edema is indicated. Abstract

Background: eHealth programs could be a flexible and scalable resource to support and empower people with advanced cancer and their family caregivers. A face-to-face intervention that has demonstrated effectiveness is the “FOCUS” program, developed and tested in the USA. Recently the FOCUS program was translated and adapted to the European context as part of an international study in six European countries, resulting in the “FOCUS+” program. FOCUS+ served as the basis for development of the web-based iFOCUS program. Objective: We aim to (1) describe the development process of the iFOCUS program, (2) outline the challenges we encountered and how they were overcome, and (3) present findings regarding the acceptability and usability of iFOCUS. Methods: We used the four phased agile Scrum methodology to develop iFOCUS and applied set timeframes of rapid program development and evaluation (sprints). Five teams were involved in the development i.e. a core development group, a web development team, an international consortium, audio-visual experts, and potential end-users. Results: Development followed seven steps, integrated across the four phases of Scrum: (1) concept design, (2) development of mock-ups, (3) Feedback from the international consortium, (4) technical development of iFOCUS, (5) creating versions for the six participating countries, (6) preliminary testing of iFOCUS and (7) implementing the final version in a randomized controlled trial. User testing included 42 participants (twenty patient-family caregiver dyads and two bereaved family caregivers) who reviewed the iFOCUS program. Users found the iFOCUS program to be acceptable and usable. Feedback mainly focused on text size and fonts. Minor changes to the content, tailoring, and program flow were required. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical presentation, course, and outcomes of uveitis in paediatric patients with tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome (TINU). Methods: Multicentric Retrospective Cohort Study 110 patients ≤21 years of age diagnosed with TINU from 10 sites across the United States and Canada. Clinical diagnosis of TINU required uveitis diagnosed by an ophthalmologist, elevated serum creatinine (SCr) and elevated urine β2-microglobulin (β2M) or abnormal urinalysis. Renal biopsy and systemic illness were not mandatory. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to analyse risk factors and treatment modalities. Results: Median age was 13 years (Range (5.9–18.4); 52% male); median follow-up, 1.6 years (IQR 0.98–4.02). Uveitis was symptomatic in 90%, with bilateral anterior uveitis in 94%. Ninety-two (84%) patients required immunomodulatory treatment (IMT). Methotrexate (n = 44) and mycophenolate mofetil (n = 39) were the first agents after oral corticosteroids. 45% required addition of biologic agents (Adalimumab [n = 33], Infliximab [n = 8]). Younger age (p = 0.018), male sex (p = 0.011), and higher uveitis grade at presentation (p = 0.031) were associated with greater IMT ( ≥ 2) requirement. 53% had uveitis recurrence compared to 16% with nephritis recurrence. At the most recent visit, nephritis was controlled in 90%, while uveitis in 74%. Four (4%) patients required glaucoma surgery. Nine (8%) patients had renal complications. Conclusions: Most patients with TINU require steroid-sparing IMT for control of uveitis, with nearly half requiring addition of biologic agents. Urinalysis, urine β2M and SCr testing should be considered in children presenting with uveitis, especially when the disease is bilateral and anterior.
